Success For Solar Power Begins With People Power
L
eaders in the fight for clean power sought to lift fledgling hopes for a national greenenergy transition after the disappointing failure of Build Back Better, a broad federal spending package that would have included investments in renewable technologies. Speakers at the virtual rally, hosted over Zoom by the Solar Energy Industry Association on January 25, sounded notes of excitement and frustration that should resonate with Arizonans, who have seen the prospects of solar power rise and fall on the whims of politics. It’s worth tuning into national-level discussions like these, which show how closely our own state’s energy future is bound up with that of the nation at large. The two senators who led the discussion, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, emphasized the personal stakes involved in the fight for renewable energy, pointing to the year-round wildfire season in New Mexico and the need to keep energy prices low for people in North Minneapolis, who have borne the brunt of fossil-fuel pollution. Arizonans can certainly relate. Climate change, which is caused by worldwide pollution of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other compounds released through burning fossil fuels, has been making wildfires larger and more destructive, the “Arizona Republic” reported in 2020. The proliferation of blazes has spread resources thin and even challenged the effectiveness of established firefighting techniques, Victor Morfin, a fuels specialist for Coconino National Forest, told “The Guardian” newspaper in 2021. “Climate change has thrown us into a tailspin,” Morfin told “The Guardian.” “We are having an unprecedented low success rate in our initial attempts to control the fires with strategies that have historically brought results.” The increasing dryness, a major contributor to the wildfires, is itself a source of pain. Arizona has been in drought since 1996, with 19 of those years bringing below-average precipitation and every year except 1998 having above-average temperatures, according to the Arizona Department of Water Resources. Seventy-five percent of the American West is in severe drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, a partnership between the U.S. government and the University of Nebraska. The years from 2000 to 2021 are the driest period since 800 A.D., with climate change driving 40 percent of the dryness, UCLA climate scientist A. Park Williams told the :New York Times,: explaining the results of a recent treering study. The effects of this meteorological phenomenon are not just academic. Among the Arizonans facing immediate consequences are farmers, whose access to Arizona’s dwindling reservoirs is being slashed or cut off. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar helps alleviate the state’s water shortage in two ways. First, by generating its own clean energy and reducing its demand for carbonintensive power, a family causes less heat-trapping gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, resulting in less atmospheric warming and, therefore, less intense drought conditions for
Arizona and other southwestern states. Second, a single Arizona household can save 10,000 gallons of water (the amount that would be used by a traditional power plant to serve that house) by switching to solar, according to a 2015 study by Herb Guenther, former director of Arizona’s Department of Water Resources. Energy prices are perhaps the most pressing concern for most Arizona homeowners, a bitter irony given the state’s abundant supply of one of the most promising renewable energy sources of the future. Economic researcher Bjorn Lomborg warned in a “Wall Street Journal” commentary article earlier this year that the worldwide push to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions would cause continuing increases in energy prices around the world, including in the United States. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing throughout the year at about a 3.4 percent annual rate, according to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Fortunately, there are ways for Arizonans to fight back against rising prices. One way is to take advantage of the government’s existing clean energy initiative by securing a federal tax credit at the current rate of 26 percent of the cost of a solar system. The credit drops to 22 percent for systems in operation starting 2023, so interested homeowners shouldn’t wait too long. He explained how bipartisan, grassroots organizing drove the creation of clean energy policy in states around the country and ultimately led to the inclusion of strong federal investments in the current president’s infrastructure plan. RED Development Announces New Details About Paradise Valley Mall Redevelopment A NEW ERA IS ABOUT TO UNFOLD AT THE BELOVED PARADISE VALLEY MALL SITE. RED DEVELOPMENT RECENTLY RELEASED DETAILS ABOUT THE MASSIVE REDEVELOPMENT CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AT THE 100+ ACRE PROJECT LOCATED AT TATUM BOULEVARD AND CACTUS ROAD. For starters, the re-envisioned mixed-use destination has a new name – PV. It also has an updated look and feel with a new logo that was inspired by the Union Jack entry cubes, an original architectural element of Paradise Valley Mall from the 1970s. “The overall vision of this redevelopment is guided by the sentiment of honoring the more than 40-year history and legacy of the former mall and its significance in the neighborhood,” says Mike Ebert, managing partner at RED. “At its core, PV is about building a strong and enduring sense of community. Phase one will also include an expansive three-acre central park and community gathering place situated amongst the dining, entertainment and retail experiences. Along with lush landscaping and linked open spaces with walking paths, it will feature a pavilion for performances, events, and activities. The apartment portion of phase one is expected to break ground soon and will offer studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom floorplans ranging in size from 504 to 1,750 square feet. Highlights of the interiors include spacious walk-in closets, 10-foot ceilings, full-size washer and dryers, smart door locks, and oversized patios and balconies with mountain views. Kitchens will be complete with stainless steel GE appliances, quartz and granite countertops, ceramic tile backsplashes and contemporary custom cabinetry.

We are excited to be a part of the Uptown Farmers Market and now have a booth selling “More Than A Meal” cookbooks and donated artisan items to raise money for The Joy Bus Meal Delivery Program. Each Saturday, volunteers will arrive to set up our booth, assist with selling items, and help to share our story. The Uptown Farmers Market takes place on Saturday mornings at North Phoenix Baptist Church, located at 5757 N. Central Avenue in Phoenix. Familiarity with The Joy Bus mission and customer service experience is a huge plus in this volunteer position. Currently, Phoenix needs to hire more than 400 lifeguards to safely open the city’s 29 public pools for this summer. “If we cannot hire the number of lifeguards we need, we cannot open all 29 pools and that means less people will have access to a pool where they can cool off and less children will learn to swim,” says Phoenix Aquatics Director Becky Hulett. “Being a lifeguard is the best summer job. No Empty Table Club: Students Come Together to End Lunchtime Loneliness Photo and Story Courtesy of PVSchools EMPTY TABLES DURING LUNCH CAN BE PRETTY DISCOURAGING, ESPECIALLY FOR NEW STUDENTS OR THOSE TRANSITIONING BACK TO IN-PERSON LEARNING. If you don’t know anyone, you’re unsure where to sit during lunch, and you may feel alone. Unfortunately, for some students, this feeling lasts all year long. Alex Kurz, a senior at Paradise Valley High School, found a solution to this challenging situation and developed the No Empty Table (NET) Club with the support and guidance of Jacqueline Clayton, counselor and instructional division leader, and Collette Jones, socialemotional learning specialist. Alex speaks with students during lunch at Paradise Valley High School. By engaging with students sitting alone, Alex and NET Club members make them feel more included and supported. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it also has some great benefits for both parties involved. “Approaching someone new, a perfect stranger, can be difficult,” Alex says. “Overcoming this obstacle, we seek out, reach out, and send out words of encouragement to members of the student body who are physically, emotionally, or mentally distanced. We lead large-scale team-building games and activities, which foster group participation. Other times, a simple one-on-one conversation can make a substantial difference in a student’s day.” Alex’s concept for NET Club originated before the pandemic and the club currently has 15 members. Alex anticipates
this number to grow significantly by the start of the next school year. Through community outreach efforts, Alex met with student leaders from the other high schools in the district who have expressed interest in developing a NET branch at their schools. “We have dedicated members who conduct outreach opportunities, but all students are welcome to join in on the games and activities we coordinate,” he says. Now that the NET Club has a strong foundation, Alex is confident that the club will continue to flourish after he graduates in May. “Since the formation of NET, broadening the scope of positive influence and impact NET has been a compelling step I wanted us to take. Before I leave a leadership role, I try to give future officers and members outlets to push the club in new directions. It was my privilege to found and, with help from club members, develop NET to its current state. But I am more excited to see who will take the club in an improved direction when I leave for college.” While it’s not expected that a student starts their own club, Alex’s advice to others is, “Whether you are a student, parent, or staff member, I encourage you to do the unexpected. It pushes us to learn, to discover, and above all, to make progress.” Alex is a senior and has held several positions, including, but not limited to, being a State Thespian Officer, student teacher for the Center for Research in Engineering, Science, and Technology (CREST) Program, and swim team captain.

ACCORDING TO A RECENT SURVEY, 45% OF AMERICANS HAVE A SIDE HUSTLE IN ADDITION TO THEIR FULL-TIME JOB. In Maricopa County the formation of businesses rose from 4.7% to 31.9% between 2019-2020. Whether out of necessity or passion, these side jobs will have important tax consequences come April 15. “1099 contractor income is self-employment income. It is extremely important to seek guidance from a tax professional when you have any kind of business,” says Enrolled Agent Mary L. Reha, co-founder of Arete Financial Solutions. “Working with a professional who knows and understands the tax laws in this constantly changing area can save you a lot of money.” According to Reha, those who started a side business last year need to carefully consider key items that are critical in properly and lawfully filing their 2021 taxes. PAPERWORK NEEDED: As a 1099 contractor, you need to bring documentation of your income, expenses, bank statements, P&L or revenue statements, balance sheets, vehicle mileage or actual expenses and receipts for any asset over $2,500 to your tax preparer. OVERLOOKED EXPENSES: Individuals accustomed to being a W2 employee often don’t realize the many things that can be deducted as business owners. Your

Arizona Rodeo Debuts New Specialty License Plate
New Plate Honors the State’s Rodeo History, Just in Time for the Scottsdale Rodeo By Doug Pacey, ADOT Communications DAVE ALFORD HAS BEEN AROUND THE RODEO NEARLY HIS ENTIRE LIFE. Now 68-years-old, Alford, the general manager of Rodeo Scottsdale, was instrumental in the creation of the Arizona Rodeo specialty license plate.
The Arizona Rodeo specialty plate just debuted and costs $25 upon initial application and $17 from each plate goes to promote, educate, and preserve the history of rodeo in Arizona. And there’s a lot of rodeo history in Arizona. Alford points out that the two oldest rodeos in the world – Payson’s World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo and Prescott’s World’s Oldest Rodeo – are in Arizona, and rodeos in Scottsdale, Tucson and Yuma have occurred for nearly a combined 250 years. “There’s a lot of history of rodeo in Arizona and we wanted to put it on a license plate and share it,” he says.

IN A LITTLE UNDER A YEAR, THE SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA. When the country tunes in on Feb. 12, 2023, to take in one of the world’s most popular sporting events, it will enjoy the fruits of a Herculean effort that has been in the works since the spring of 2018.
“That Super Bowl in 2015 remains the most watched United States television show in history,” Ducey says. “I think we can break our own record next year.”
Recently, the host committee board of directors held a “kickoff the countdown” event, marking the official beginning of the year-long promotional campaign for Super Bowl LVII. “Our mission is to make sure that while we have the world’s attention, to tell the best story possible about Arizona,” Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee president David Rousseau says. “It’s incumbent upon everybody, the hotel community, the municipalities, certainly the business community in addition to the Cardinals organization, to put on an incredible show. It’s one that we’re proud of and I think has everything to do with the fact that we’re back here.” The event was highlighted by the announcement that former Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will serve as the executive chair of the committee’s board of directors. Fitzgerald not only starred on the field for many seasons with the Cardinals, he also endeared himself to the community with his charity work and charisma. Although he no longer suits up on Sundays, it’s fitting that Fitzgerald will play a prominent role in an event of this magnitude. It’s an event that could greatly benefit the state’s economy. Gov. Doug Ducey offered a positive outlook not just on the prospect of hosting another successful Super Bowl, but on the state’s financial health as a whole. “Today our economy is wide open. The best restaurants, hotels, resorts and small businesses are in full operation.” Ducey says. “Last year we modernized our state gaming compact amendment, which means visitors can place bets on the Super Bowl and other sports here in Arizona. This all means very exciting things for our economy. The Super Bowl is a force multiplier for economic development.” Arizona’s two other NFL title games in the 21st century, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 and Super Bowl XLIX in 2015, generated thousands of visitors and millions of dollars. The ‘08 game accounted for an economic impact of over $500 million, according to a 2008 study by economists at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business. While the macroeconomic boom grabs headlines, the benefit of hosting the Super Bowl is felt at even the smallest levels of local economies. The host committee is introducing the Business Connect program, which will provide event-ready businesses in Arizona the opportunity to compete for contracted work tied to the Super Bowl and its parallel events. “The Business Connect program supports minorityowned businesses, women-owned businesses, LGBTQ businesses and veteran-owned businesses,” committee chair Jay Perry says. “It’s a terrific partnership between the NFL, the host committee, our local partners and local Arizona businesses.” The program is aimed at businesses that have at least 51% minority, female, LGBTQ or veteran ownership, and that have had a physical office in Arizona since 2019. The goal, according to AZSuperBowl.com, is to provide a supplier diversity initiative to the Super Bowl business landscape. Super Bowl LVII will mark the fourth time the Grand Canyon state has hosted the championship game, and the third at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Only Miami (11), New Orleans (10), Los Angeles (seven) and Tampa Bay (five), have hosted more Super Bowls. With the emergence of new luxury stadiums in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, the competition to host football’s blue ribbon prize is only going to get stiffer. Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium hosted February’s Super Bowl, while Las Vegas has already landed the Pro Bowl and NFL Draft. “When we won this bid, there certainly wasn’t a stadium built in Las Vegas,” Cardinals Owner and President Michael Bidwill says. “They’re now hosting not only the Pro Bowl but also the draft, so Vegas is a new competitor. We’ve got L.A, New Orleans, South Florida, so we have to continue to invest in the stadium and invest in the infrastructure that makes us a great destination for these mega events.”

The longer we live here the more it has become a community, and the revitalization of North 32nd Street will make it even better. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE IS… In a word, transitional. I am a recovering insurance professional; after more than 35 years on the corporate side of insurance I am switching gears. I run a craft show, the Neighborhood Artisan Network, at 32nd Street and Thunderbird once a month. My small but mighty group of neighborhood artisans comes together on the third Saturdays from October to April, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. I also volunteer with the Arizona Live Music Cooperative (AZLMC), an open mic 14 • March 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
event every Monday evening in the Genesis Church auditorium. The venue elevates the experience for acoustic folk musicians and singer/songwriters in the area. The public is welcome at 6:30 p.m. In addition, I am a member of Genesis Church and participate in volunteer work for their events. Another favorite daily activity is that my neighborhood has a “howdy time” every evening in the street. The neighbors come out to say hello and share any news of the day. We have become very close friends as we share in each other’s life events. MY FAMILY IS… We are transplants from Washington and Minnesota, so our relatives are far away. My husband, Paul, and I opted to not have kids, but happily found ourselves with what we call “adopted adults.” These young adults came into our lives through Paul’s caving hobby. Now we have the privilege of being stand-in grandparents to beautiful children as well. I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… The peace and joy of my faith, my husband, family, and friends. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A veterinarian, but then I found out it’s not just playing with animals! I grew up on a farm in Minnesota and had pets all my life. I have adopted several cats from shelters and still have two “purr-fect” girls. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS… I don’t sing, but if I did it would be “I Will Survive!” As a two-time breast cancer survivor of more than ten years, I can adopt that anthem. That journey was tough but gave me personal
experience that has been helpful to others who are facing it themselves or have loved ones going through a cancer journey. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My super smart husband is always bringing interesting things into our lives. Between his interests and mine there is never a dull moment! THE PERFECT DAY… My perfect day isn’t from luxury, recognition, or extravagant experiences, but a day of making good choices. This is always a work in progress as I try to make more good choices than bad, moment by moment, and day by day. It may be the choice to talk to someone instead of looking past them or really listen when people talk. It may lead to an amazing conversation, a new friendship, or open a door to new possibilities. You never know when a comment, pat on the back or introduction changes the trajectory of someone’s life.

The Digital Homebuying Hunt Home Buying Digitally Continues to Grow in Popularity in Local Real Estate Market By Darren Tackett
T
he world of house hunters has become increasingly digital. In 2021, 97% of buyers looked online for their next home, and 51% purchased their home online. In North Phoenix, and in the homebuying community at large, handling transactions digitally (where a potential buyer is not physically present) has become more common than traditional in-person transactions. With so many moving here from out-ofstate (Seattle accounting for 15.6% and Los Angeles topping the charts at 30.4%) combined with slim inventory, it becomes impractical to be here on the ground waiting for the right home to come on the market.
Real estate agents now have a common practice for working with out-of-state buyers. When a new listing hits the market, it is shared with prospective buyers via text and/ or email. If a buyer is interested, a video walkthrough is scheduled with the listing agent. A video walkthrough is preferred in lieu of FaceTime or Zoom because this allows buyers to watch it as many times as they want, and they
don’t necessarily have to be available in real-time. Assuming a buyer likes what they see, an offer is submitted utilizing digital signatures. Upon acceptance of the offer, inspections are scheduled in coordination with a buyer’s schedule, which allows them to fly or drive in to see the property. Many buyers choose not to be present and will Zoom or FaceTime with home inspectors to review the results. After the inspection period is complete, near the close of escrow, the buyers have an option to complete a final walkthrough of the property. It is not uncommon for them to waive a final walkthrough and to see the home the first time when they finally take possession. The first time I completed a transaction digitally was well before the invention of FaceTime and smartphones. I was on pins and needles knowing I convinced the buyers the home was nice and met their needs. Now, with all the tools at our disposal, I feel almost no pressure when selling homes this way and, in fact, it can even be a smoother process overall when executed properly. There are potential downsides when it comes to virtual
transactions. Some clients feel there is no substitute for seeing a property in person. Driving through the neighborhood and seeing how other neighbors keep their homes, as well as the topography, all are much easier to understand when physically being there. It is also becoming more common for listing agents to exclude virtual showings when they have multiple offers because the virtual offers tend to have a higher cancellation rate. However, there are many benefits for buyers and sellers with the added flexibility that digital homebuying provides. If you are on deployment, moving across the country or unable to meet in person, the tools and technology available to preview, inspect, sign, and buy afford you the opportunity to buy or sell your home with relative ease. hen locals pass by the Ace Hardware on 32nd Street, they’ve likely noticed the construction and growth. That is because, thanks to community support, the locally-owned hardware store is doubling in size—going from 10,000 square feet to more than 22,000 square feet. With perfect timing, this growth comes as Dave Karsten, owner of the 32nd Street Ace Hardware location,

Karsten owns five Ace Hardware locations across the Valley, including the growing North 32nd store. Karsten adds that each of his Ace Hardware locations has their own “personality” based on the neighborhood the hardware store serves. For example, the Carefree location has more of a small town feel and is “definitely your hometown hardware store,” he says. His oldest location, in Cave Creek, in addition to hardware, is also a full-service feed store with feed for horses, cows, chickens, goats, and more.

Most applicable to North 32nd residents is the North 32nd Street Corridor store, located at 10620 N. 32nd Street. The hardware store’s growth gives local shoppers a lot more to choose from in the way of home improvement items and big brands.
Since the local Ace Hardware has grown, Karsten and his team are also looking for a few more “red vested heroes” for the sales floor. He shares that he and Theobald look for employees who are in alignment with their company’s purpose and core values.

PVSCHOOLS CELEBRATES NINE NATIONAL BOARD-CERTIFIED TEACHERS Did you know that National Board Certification is the highest certificate an educator can achieve? It’s true! PVSchools is proud to say that five of their teachers have just reached this distinction, and another four teachers have renewed their credentials. They are now among an elite group of educators who have earned this prestigious honor. Joining the three percent of the teaching population who earned National Board Certification are Pamela Fulk, Sunrise Middle School; Miriam Schantz-Marion, Eagle Ridge Elementary School; Kelly Romm, Grayhawk Elementary School; John Trenton, Pinnacle High School; and Reagen Winters, Boulder Creek Elementary School. Since the NBCT credentials need to be renewed every few years, PVSchools had several teachers complete the National Board’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process. The educators who have completed the process are Rachel Cohen, Larkspur Elementary School; Heather Fleming, Quail Run Elementary School; Teresa Smith, Pinnacle High School; and LeAnna Wolkis Goldstein, Fireside Elementary School.
PVSCHOOLS WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER Recently, Maricopa County School Superintendent Steve Watson appointed Michael Laney to the PVSchools Governing Board. Laney will serve on the Governing Board for the remainder of 2022. His appointment fills a vacancy that occurred after the resignation of a Governing Board member. An involved local community member, Laney co-owns an online retail business and was a top sales agent at GoDaddy for several years. He and his wife have four children, two of them have graduated from PVSchools, and two that are still attending schools in the district. He shares that he joined the board as a way to give back to his local public schools.

TAKE THE TRIP FAMILY TRAVEL HACKS JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING BREAK By Nadine Bubeck, TakeTheTripFamily.com

hen I was two, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad flew cross country, and my mom decided to drive me and my sisters. I was a toddler, and my sisters were young kids, so this was quite the endeavor considering we had no cell phones, no Google, and no navigation. My mom somehow planned and mapped everything to a tee. Fast forward more than 30 years and we have everything at our fingertips. Somehow that go-getting travel gene runs in my blood, so our family’s motto is to “take the trip.” If you’re planning a family trip, here are some travel hacks for hitting the open road. USE APPS. If you’re traveling to national parks, there’s a cool app called GyPSY Guide. The narrated driving tour app uses your location to automatically play entertaining and educational commentary about your location (like notable areas in Yellowstone, the Tetons, etc.). It’s interesting for truly learning about the areas you’re exploring. GO BACK TO THE BASICS. When we were young, we occupied

ourselves in the car with a notebook and crayons. As simple as it sounds, get word search books, Mad Libs, crosswords puzzles, and similar activities for kids. It’s easy, affordable, and a stimulating way to keep long drives screen-free. CREATE A CAR SCHEDULE. I have three young boys and I’m admittedly not a fan of the iPad. On trips, I often drive nine or more hours at a time, so I try to create some sort of plan. For example, the first hour we listen to different genres of music, then they watch a DVD, the next hour is quiet time, coloring time, etc. I also love conversation starter cards for families. Check out Table Topics; they give families ideas/topics to discuss. DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE. The pandemic has changed the travel industry. Spend time pre-planning and pack plenty of masks and hand sanitizer as pandemic restrictions depend on location. You might also need to make reservations at places that didn’t require them in the past. PREP A LAP DESK. For comfort in coloring, buy a cheap lap desk, making it easy for kids to write (or even eat) on the road. I put a stickable white board on ours because kids love
writing with erasable markers, and for littles, it’s a fun way to practice writing and spelling skills. BRING SELECT TOYS. I’m very picky about the toys I bring on vacation. I’m all about versatile and compact entertainment that will occupy them for hours at a time. What I’m loving lately (all affordable): the Plus Plus travel pack, Stickers by Number, and Kanoodle. I also suggest getting a travel journal for kids. GET YOUR KIDS TRAVEL BLOGGING. V-tech has a great Kidi Cam that doubles as a selfie stick and all-in-one editor. My older boys love creating their own movies, doing hotel tours of the properties we visit, and snapping photos of their favorite activities. It’s a great way to encourage kids to document your family trips. REDUCE YOUR CARLOAD BY OPTING TO RENT ALONG THE WAY. Going to the beach? Instead of schlepping your chairs and umbrellas, most beach towns offer rentals, and many resorts offer such amenities for free. OPT FOR LAUNDRY SERVICE. I can’t tell you how many loads of laundry we acquire along the way, but
I discovered many online services that offer pick-up and next day delivery, even to hotels. It’s usually under $100 for two to three loads and it makes things a lot less stressful (and dirty!). PLAN ONE MAJOR ACTIVITY PER DAY. This way, you have one thing to check off your daily list while allowing room for flexibility. We often get caught up with schedules that vacations seem rushed. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND A PLAYGROUND. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a new place, found a playground, and became “mom of the year” by discovering new play structures for my kids to burn energy on. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM If you suffer from allergies, you may be more prone to illnesses such as sinus infections and other respiratory conditions. Make sure your immune system is in tip-top shape before the allergy season begins. Daily vitamin C can boost immunity and can act as mild antihistamine. Local raw honey can be used daily to help prime the system for the upcoming allergy season. A simple nasal irrigation with saline, such as a netipot, can help decrease and prevent that stubborn stuffy nose. REDUCE YOUR IN-HOME ALLERGENS We are exposed to many allergens in our home. I recommend purchasing a good quality HEPA air purifier and running it 24/7 during allergy season (I run mine year-round). Allergen exposure is especially high when we are sleeping, so having it in the bedroom is beneficial. Just make sure to change and clean the filters regularly. If you have carpet in your home, vacuum at least twice per week to help decrease your exposure. If allergies are severe and you have pets, you may want to consider an alternative flooring. Don’t forget to clean your windowsills, blinds, and ceiling fans. They love to collect dust and we often forget about them. You can also eliminate dust mites by placing your pillows, comforters and blankets in the

Avoid dairy products, as they can add to inflammation, produce more mucus, and aggravate current allergy symptoms. Reduce processed and high sugar foods and drink ample water. IN THEATERS
“Sundown” A man stays in the country he vacations in after his family leaves. At best, you can say that “Sundown” is a lovely looking film with nothing on its mind that repeats itself endlessly to get past that 70-minute mark. At worst, it’s a shallow take on the wealthy’s fear of the “other” that shows you the protagonist destroying his life without actively challenging him. But realistically, director and writer Michael Franco just wanted to travel for a month or two and tried to stitch together a narrative. Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg, two usually fantastic actors, seem bored here, restricted by the lack of material. Repetitive storytelling is not inherently bad, but there still must be some brains behind it. There’s nothing to be found with “Sundown.” “Moonfall” A group of misfits go on a high-risk mission to stop the moon from falling to Earth. It’s called “Moonfall,” and it’s exactly what you think it is - a bombastic 24 • March 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
film with not a lot of brains but surprisingly a fair amount of heart. Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson carry the film, giving emotionally flawed characters that could be stale but are helped by the actors’ charm, which make up for the dull supporting cast. But what you’re here for is the spectacle, and thankfully the film doesn’t disappoint. It shows some visually impressive and exciting moments of destruction, with the most creative one being a car crash that happens on earth. It also has some of the most bizarre but weirdly intriguing world building. It’s a lost 90s film in the best and worst ways, but if this is your kind of film, it’s one to seek out.
“Jackass Forever” The “Jackass” gang reunites, with some new faces, for one last rodeo. “Jackass”
has gotten its legacyquel moment, and even as someone not as into “Jackass,” it is a great film. It clearly has that feeling of friends getting back together for the first time in years and they’re happy to see each other again. With their reunion we see the stunts and pranks they’re known for, managing to still one-up themselves in disgust, hurt and humor. The new recruits also are a lot of fun, fitting in with Johnny, Steve-O and company while bringing a new personality to it. Most of all, what’s surprising is how detailed the filmmaking is—really capturing each injury and hit in as much detail as possible and bringing a strange sense of scale. It’s an absolute blast of a picture.

A full half of the film is spent before the murder happens, which can make or break the film for some, but I believe it utilizes it well to establish our characters and make you suspicious of them. The lovely views of the Nile contrast the dark atmosphere well too. It takes a second to get going, but Kenneth Branagh’s second Poirot mystery is an improvement.
