America Gets a Green New Deal
COVID relief law provides additional tax credits to homeowners to pay for solar By Michael O’Donnell
J
oe Biden is now the president of the United States and the Democrats now have a majority in both houses of Congress. Giving Americans a Green New Deal was front and center in the platform that the president and Democratic congressional candidates ran on to get elected, and they and the president’s administration are wasting no time in delivering on that promise. In terms of ambition, the president’s call to address climate change is nothing short of JFK’s “moonshot,” his declaration that America would put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.The call to end the use of fossil fuels in the next 15 to 25 years is on par with that goal and perhaps more urgent to humanity. Immediately following the inauguration, the president recommitted the United States to the Paris Climate Accord, a treaty meant to limit global warming by holding countries mutually responsible for drastically reducing their share of greenhouse-gas emissions. America’s participation in this global effort very likely will add significant costs to oil, gas, and coal. In addition, the Keystone XL Pipeline, a conduit meant to transport oil from Canada, was canceled. These measures will probably increase the price Americans pay for gasoline at the pump and for electricity in their homes. The government’s plan to transition American homeowners from heating and cooling their homes with fossil fuels to doing so with renewable energy incorporates both carrots and sticks. The new COVID-19 relief bill passed by Congress in early January has significantly increased the federal tax credit that offsets the cost of home solar systems. Without that act of Congress, the federal subsidy for an average size home in the Phoenix area would have been thousands of dollars less this year and zero next year. The provisions of the law will increase the tax credit homeowners get for solar by thousands of dollars. Most homes in APS’ territory that convert from fossil fuels to solar may receive between $7,000 and $18,000, depending on the size of the home and energy usage. The systems can be designed to reduce APS customers’ annual bill to $0 or even a negative total. The larger the system, the larger the federal government’s subsidy. Hence, the larger the system, the lower the APS bill (or the higher the payment to the homeowner).

The stick is, obviously, the ever increasing cost of fossil-fuel-generated electricity, which will make solar power for homes more and more compelling. It is basically the same strategy the government used to reduce the number of American tobacco smokers. While the warning label got people’s attention, it was the increase in the price of a pack of cigarettes, from 80 cents to $8 a pack, that really drove people to quit. A no-money-down, financed home solar system typically incurs a monthly payment that’s $50 to $100 per month less than the amount they’re currently paying the utility company for the same electricity. Mr. and Mrs. Jenson signed up for solar in early February.“We were very happy to see that the cost of the solar system and the monthly payment in the proposal we received in February were significantly lower than in the proposal we received in December before the COVID relief bill,” they say. “With the U.S. government making renewable energy a big priority, we know our utility costs will increase faster in the near future than it has in the past. We’re excited to use the incentives to lock in and lower our electricity costs and have our family be part of the solution to climate change.” You may be surprised at the current cost of a solar system. The cost of solar panels have come down 70 percent in the last 10 years while electricity prices have continue to climb. When you add in the additional incentives provided in the COVID-19 relief legislation, you will experience a lower annual cost and see a profit in many cases of between $50,000 and $100,000 in the next 25 years by switching to solar. And this does not include the profit you will realize when you sell your house for a higher price because of the $0 electric bill, as compared to the price you would get if you had to sell it with a bill costing thousands of dollars per year and increasing annually If you would like to receive a free solar design customized to your house and your family’s usage, just call 623-562-9004 or visit greendeal.sunsolarsolutions.com. What to Know About Local Trailhead Construction Before Your Next Hike By Ethan Kispert PREPARING FOR THAT WEEKEND HIKING TRIP BUT WORRIED ABOUT CONSTRUCTION IMPACTING YOUR PLANS? Don’t fret as there are still plenty of areas for hikers to park and enjoy the sunny weather despite local construction.
If you’ve been struggling to find a program created for: GENERAL CHRONIC PAIN ARTHRITIS OSTEOPOROSIS SCOLIOSIS NERVE COMPRESSION FIBROMYALGIA LYMPHEDEMA
I hear you! I can help you find freedom in movement that may help avoid invasive procedures, lengthy recovery time or worst of all, injury!
Signs that have been posted in various areas, such as one that’s at the 32nd Street Trailhead, mention areas where hikers can go and park their cars. The 32nd Street Trailhead sign, more specifically, recommends that people who want to hike should park in either the 32nd Street Trailhead lot or at the Summit Trailhead lot. What the sign fails to do is to let hikers know of other available areas to park aside from the Summit Trailhead lot.
For the time being, the listed parking areas remain as the primary means of accessing the various trailheads at the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Hikers, however, can access the trails from all sides of the preserve, and even through neighboring communities and other trailheads nearby. Below are maps from the city of Phoenix’s website that detail the various access points available for hikers. For more info on where to park and how to access the trailheads, visit phoenix.gov.
If both the 32nd Street Trailhead and the Summit Trailhead lots are full, there are other options. According to mapping from Phoenix’s city website, both the Hopi and Apache parking areas will be under construction until spring 2021 and summer 2022 respectively. For hikers that want to get out for the day, that leaves them with three other options when accessing the Piestewa Peak. While driving up northward along Squaw Peak Drive, drivers can choose to park in the Navajo, Mojave, or the unnamed parking area 1. All three of these parking areas give hikers direct access to Piestewa Peak. For hikers that will be entering the northern side of the park, there are a couple options to choose from. These options are both the Dreamy Draw Parking Area and the 40th Street Parking Area. It’s important to remember when utilizing these areas is that hikers will have to head south a bit to connect with the trailheads that lead to Piestewa Peak.

City News Fresh Taste Meal Prep: Delivering Meals To Your Door While Supporting Local Nonprofits To Feed The Hungry THE TEAM BEHIND AIOLI GOURMET BURGERS HAS LAUNCHED A NEW BUSINESS THAT GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY CALLED FRESH TASTE MEAL PREP (FTMP). They prepare fully cooked refrigerated meals that can be delivered to your doorstep or picked up. How does it work? You order meals online for weekly delivery or for pick up in Phoenix. For every 10 meals purchased, FTMP will donate one meal to a local nonprofit to be distributed to those in need. To keep things exciting, menu offerings change weekly and can be customized to fit any dietary needs. Meals can be ordered once or you can sign up for ongoing weekly service. The more meals you order, the lower the price per meal.
Examples of menu options include beef and broccoli, roasted pepper tomato basil soup, breakfast tacos, citrus glazed salmon, coconut curry shrimp, turkey melt sandwich, and more. Each meal can be reheated in the microwave within minutes. “When the pandemic hit, we quickly pivoted our business model, moving into a prepared meals program for those staying at home. Soon after, my team quickly realized that frontline workers needed support and we created a meal donation program,” says says Tommy D’Ambrosio, chef and owner. “During the first month after we launched, we donated more than 1,000 meals to the staff at HonorHealth, Valleywise Health and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Eyes Wide Shut: What to Expect from Drivers Now that Recreational Weed is on the Streets By Marc Lamber WIDE ACCESS TO RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA IS HERE IN ARIZONA, CREATING NEW CONCERNS FROM MOTORISTS ON OUR ROADWAYS. Arizona law prohibits driving while impaired by marijuana to the slightest degree. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), several studies have shown that marijuana use can impair a number of cognitive processes that are important for safe driving, such as reaction time and responses to road emergencies, motor coordination, road tracking, and completing complex tasks that require divided attention. In neighboring Colorado, since recreational marijuana was legalized seven years ago, traffic deaths involving positive marijuana toxicology have increased 151% while all Colorado traffic deaths have only increased 35%. Also sobering is that the AAA’s 2019 Traffic Safety Culture Index reveals that only 70% of respondents consider driving shortly after using marijuana to be very or extremely dangerous. There is no breathalyzer in use to detect tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychomyhyperlocalnews.com
active ingredient in marijuana. However, that technology is on the horizon. Some law enforcement agencies outside of Arizona are experimenting with technology that detects THC following a swab of the cheek. For instance, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute recently provided 52 Indiana law enforcement agencies with a handheld analyzer that uses an oral fluid swab to detect the presence of six kinds of drugs, including cannabis.
a blood test. If the driver declines, their license will be confiscated and suspended. Arizona police agencies are also deploying drug enforcement vans with police officers who can electronically obtain blood draw search warrants through on-call judges and those same officers may be certified phlebotomists capable of drawing blood at the scene. THC in the blood and other evidence of impairment can lead to DUI conviction, significant fines and jail time.
Arizona’s law prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle when a person is impaired to the slightest degree, but the presence of marijuana in a person’s body alone does not make them guilty of DUI. There is no objective standard in Arizona that defines impairment. Impairment is a subjective determination by the police officer based on the totality of circumstances leading up to and surrounding the stop like the driver’s observed behavior, the officer’s detection of marijuana odor, the driver’s responses to questions, and the driver’s performance on standard field sobriety tests.
If you have recently consumed marijuana, follow a simple rule: Don’t get behind the wheel. Remember, if you feel different, you drive different. As a personal injury lawyer over the last thirty years, I’ve seen the results of making poor decisions and getting behind the wheel, time and again. Those decisions can cause permanent injuries, or worse. It can affect countless lives, including your own. Once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed.
If an officer has reasonable grounds to believe a driver was driving impaired, then Arizona law creates “implied consent” to

City News Planning on Attending Spring Training Games? Here’s What You Should Know By Regina Burgess Photos Alina Nelson BATTER UP. MASK UP. Despite an offseason that suggested a delay to the start of spring training, Major League Baseball pitchers and catchers kicked off games on February 27. Arizona is home to 10 stadiums where 15 Cactus League teams prepare for the regular season each year. Last month, MLB’s Players Association rejected a proposal by the league to postpone the start of spring ball because of COVID-19 concerns. Major League Baseball did not announce a blanket policy because many of the decisions are determined by individual municipalities. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all of the Major League Baseball spring training stadiums will operate at significantly reduced capacities with a reduced number of fans at each game. Although, as of press time, few teams released specific details of attendance plans, most are expected to follow guidelines similar to the ones the City of Tempe announced recently. Tempe Diablo Stadium, spring home of the Los Angeles Angels, will open at 25% capacity. This would allow 1,800 to 2,000 guests to attend the games. On February 19, the City of Peoria also shared their plans for the Peoria Sports Complex, home to the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. “While health and safety are clearly at the top of the list of the most important aspects of our lives, baseball is a close second,” says Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat. “We are excited to welcome the Mariners and the Padres back to their spring training home and I am proud to see that we have developed a plan that allows fans to safely enjoy America’s favorite pastime at the Peoria Sports Complex.” The Peoria Sports Complex will host 1,960 fans, 16% of the total stadium capacity. To ensure MLB safety protocols, a seating pod system will be employed in the stadium that encourages physical distancing to allow households and immediate family members to sit together. Tickets will be sold in “pods” of one to four tickets for the seating bowl. Berm 6 • March 2021 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
seating will be sold in pods of two, four or six tickets. Locations for the pods will be clearly marked and physically distanced from other pods. Fans who would like to attend a game can expect the following changes at Peoria Sports Complex (and likely other sports venues, too): • Facial masks will be required for everyone two years old and older throughout the stadium except when actively eating and drinking in their designated seats. • Practices and Autograph Alley will be closed to the public. • Hand-sanitizing stations throughout the ballpark. • No season and group tickets available. • The stadium will be a cashless facility, using credit or debit payments only at the ticket office and concession stands. • Parking will be complimentary and tailgating will be prohibited. • Employees will complete COVID-19 symptom screenings prior to their shifts. • Some games may be shortened from the typical nine innings to seven or five innings, upon mutual agreement of both managers. In addition to these changes, the Peoria Sports Complex will offer an engaging virtual fan experience for all spring training fans. Other venues are expected to do the same. As of press time, The San Francisco Giants said in a statement that it will sell between 750-1,000 tickets for each game played at Scottsdale Stadium, which has a capacity of 12,000 fans. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs say they have received the OK from the City of Mesa, Maricopa County and the state to operate at 25% capacity for all games to be held at Sloan Park. Players and team personnel are required to adhere to new rules set by MLB, which released its health and safety protocols for the 2021 season. Players will be required to wear face coverings at all times, with the only exception for players on the field or during pregame warmups. Additionally, mandatory fiveday at-home quarantine before reporting to spring training was expected, and players and other on-field personnel will continue to be tested at least every other day throughout the spring. Regina Burgess and Alina Nelson both work for Cronkite News.
SPRING TRAINING LOCATIONS “Attendance policies at each ballpark are available at their specific websites, but in general, fans should expect face mask requirements, physical distancing, and limited capacity at all parks,” according to VisitArizona.com. The state tourism website suggests that attendees visit CactusLeague.com for the most up to date information.

Women and Wealth: Taking Ownership of Your Financial Future Ladies, are you paying attention to your finances and thinking about your retirement income plan? We hope that you are. If not, it’s important to note that research shows women are more likely than men to have a financial shortfall in retirement. Consider these statistics, according to Morningstar:
WOMEN, WINE & WEALTH SEMINAR
• Only 39% of women are confident they will have enough resources to last 25 years in retirement. • 48% of unmarried females receiving Social Security relied on Social Security for 90% of their income (2017). • 50% of women age 65+ have incomes that render them economically insecure. Because our attention is often split between competing roles—spouse, mother, employee, caregiver and others—it’s easy to fall year-after-year into the trap of letting someone else handle the retirement income planning, just assuming everything will be “fine.” Are you ready to take control, improve your financial literacy and plan for a better future? City News Connecting Through Books in North 32nd Story and Photo by Allison J. Barnett IN THE FAST-PACED TECH WORLD, THERE’S A CALM THAT COMES FROM ENJOYING A GOOD BOOK. It is amazing the potential to explore another culture or different world through fantasy, cooking, art, music or something else you may want to learn, all in the possibility of words and images on paper. Neighbors in North 32nd can share the magical world of reading by becoming stewards of little free libraries. Little free libraries are basically little free public bookcases. They encourage a neighborhood book exchange and are ran on the honor system. Stewards of these little libraries create the space for their neighbors to enjoy the books. By being a steward in our community, they
keep the libraries organized, sometimes offering a special treat to your furry friends or a guest book to share your reading adventures. I recently had the opportunity to chat with two of our North 32nd stewards as well as be a steward of our community little library right by 32 Shea. Cathy Bonnell, a former school librarian in the Washington School District, fell into her love of libraries many years ago. With her role as well as her curiosity and love for children’s books, authors and publishers often wanted her to review books. After learning about little libraries from a friend, she chose to share the
books first in a basket in front of her home, then a kind neighbor gifted her a library, which she has now permanently installed in front of her home next to Mercury Mine Basin.
registering your little free library, visit littlefreelibrary.org. Click on “Our Map” to discover libraries registered in our area or check out where they might be for friends and family afar.
“If you have a passion for something, then you can pass it on by how you share it,” she says.
As a community, we are so lucky to have even more libraries than what the official map shows with the generosity of our neighbors kindly sharing their books.
Another steward, Monica Stern, enjoys her little library near Thunderbird, which she opted to construct from nearly all repurposed items. She built it herself with friends and neighbors, sharing different pieces including a tin roof to protect it from weather. “I really enjoy seeing families or people pause and read on the bench or discovering the notepad to leave me with beautiful messages of their experiences,” Stern says. How You Can Help During “Kitten Season” This Spring By Stephanie Nichols-Young, president of the Animal Defense League of Arizona IT’S KITTEN SEASON IN THE VALLEY OF THE SUN. That means animal shelters will soon be overrun with kittens. There are some things that you can do to help alleviate the problem. If you have pet cats, please get them spayed or neutered right away. Even indoor cats can get outside and contribute to the problem. If you don’t have pet cats, keep an eye out for any new cats in your yard or neighborhood and make sure they are fixed, too. You can tell if outdoor cats have been fixed by looking at their left ears. If the ears are flattened at the top, they have an ear-tip, the sign that the cat has been spayed or neutered.

Many first-time trappers succeed if they follow the Animal Defense League of Arizona’s instructions. A KITTEN SEASON STORY OF HOW LOCALS CAN HELP Valley resident Larry noticed a skittish adult cat hanging around in his back yard. He contacted a local animal shelter and was referred to the Animal Defense League of Arizona’s Spay Neuter Hotline. He learned about Trap, Neuter Return (“TNR”), the most humane and effective way to control the outdoor cat population and reduce neighborhood problems caused by yowling, fighting and spraying when cats are in breeding season. He followed instructions, fed the cat on a schedule, made an appointment to borrow a humane trap, and have the cat spay/neutered at a nearby clinic. But he found a surprise when he was preparing to trap. The orange cat was a female and about six weeks earlier had a litter of kittens. The kittens were beginning to eat the food Larry put out for mom. After talking to a Spay Neuter Hotline Scheduler about this new development, Larry learned the kittens would be old enough to fix at two months when they weighed about two pounds.
He made an appointment for mom and the kittens. He spayed and released mom back in his yard. Two of the kittens were outgoing and met the two-pound limit for surgery. They got right into a shelter and were adopted in less than a day. The other two kittens were a bit underweight for surgery and were shy. Larry had never had a pet, so just trapping mom was a bit out of his comfort zone. He didn’t know what to do with the two smaller kittens. Through word of mouth Larry found a volunteer who could foster the small kittens until they “made weight” for surgery and were ready to be adopted out to good homes. The volunteer was also able to work with the kittens so they came out of their shells. They also became tamer, liked to be petted and be around people. They used a litter box, one of the most important things to help get kittens permanently adopted. They also had a happy ending. They were adopted together into a loving home. The only thing better than a sweet, fixed kitten is two! City News ADOT Officers Combat Human Trafficking Through Training, Awareness
Fighting the practice is a year-round mission at ports of entry, elsewhere HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS A GROWING WORLDWIDE PROBLEM AND ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL ENFORCEMENT TOOLS TO COMBAT THIS CRIME IS PART OF THE ESSENTIAL MISSION OF THE ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION ENFORCEMENT AND COMPLIANCE DIVISION. This division is comprised of certified law enforcement officers, many of whom are assigned to the various ports of entry on the state’s borders. While operations at these ports focus on commercial vehicle safety, collecting fees and enforcing weight limits, it turns out these ports are a vital and strategic line of defense against human trafficking. Commanders and their staff from the Enforcement and Compliance Division at ADOT’s commercial vehicle ports of entry are trained to identify warning
signs of human trafficking. These can include things such as unusual tattoos, a person’s unwillingness to speak, and carrying large amounts of cash without explanation. Since 2019, this training, which explains the demand for human trafficking and how this crime is perpetrated, has become part of the standard training for ADOT officers. The enforcement division is developing online training so ADOT highway workers will also be ready to spot the signs of human trafficking. “As the state’s transportation agency, ADOT is in a critical position to help stop human trafficking and we take that role very seriously,” says ADOT Director John Halikowski. “ADOT’s commitment to transportation safety includes not only drivers, but the victims of this horrible practice.”
Meanwhile, dozens of vehicles driven by officers with ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division have bumper stickers aimed at directing those who need help or who see signs of trouble to EndSexTrafficking.AZ.gov or 888-373-7888, resources offered through the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith and Family. Capt. Dave Curry of ADOT’s Enforcement and Compliance Division is a member of the Arizona Human Trafficking Council created by Governor Doug Ducey to help make Arizona a
leader in combating this crime. “ADOT takes several approaches to do our part to end this heinous practice here in Arizona,” Curry says. “From comprehensive training of officers and employees to raising awareness through bumper stickers on our vehicles, ADOT is serious about stopping human trafficking and saving lives.” If you would like to learn more about how to help stop human trafficking, visit EndSexTrafficking.az.gov. New Consumer Program Warns Against Paying Debts with Gift Cards By Julia Sandor and Kiersten Moss Photo by Kiersten Moss CONSUMERS WILL START SEEING NEW “STOP” SIGNS AT GIFT CARD DISPLAYS IN MANY LOCAL STORES, PART OF AN EFFORT TO FIGHT A GROWING AND COSTLY FRAUD IN WHICH SCAMMERS – OFTEN POSING AS GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS – ASK CONSUMERS TO PAY OFF A DEBT OR PENALTY THROUGH GIFT CARDS. Attorney General Mark Brnovich and members of the Arizona Food Marketing Alliance recently announced the awareness program to educate and alert consumers about the increasingly common crime. These thieves sometimes go as far as to threaten people with arrest or the loss of Social Security or other benefits, Brnovich says. “We want people to pause before they buy a gift card and send that money to someone they don’t know,” he explains. “We want to remind people, and I keep saying this but it’s so important, that the government will never ask you to send a gift card or wire cash in order to pay the IRS, Social Security or anyone else.” The warning, shaped like a stop sign, reads: “Gift cards
CANNOT be used to pay ANY government agency.” Brnovich says that consumers lose millions of dollars every year in these types of scams. Since January 2019, the Arizona Attorney General’s Office has received more than 230 consumer complaints related to gift card scams. In addition to government officials, scammers commonly pose as tech support, business investors or family members. Since 2018, fraud victims nationwide have reported paying nearly $245 million to scammers, with a median loss of $840, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). About one in four people who lost money to fraud and reported it to the FTC say they paid with a gift card. “Scammers prefer gift cards because they can get quick cash while staying anonymous,” according to the FTC. The most common gift cards requested late last year included eBay, Walmart, Target, CVS and Walgreens. The program provides nearly 1,000 signs in grocery and convenience stores throughout the state. If you paid a scammer with a gift card, you can file a consumer complaint with the Attorney General’s Office by calling 602-542-5763. Julia Sandor and Kiersten Moss are reporters with Cronkite News.

Kids’ Corner HELPING STUDENTS THRIVE DURING TRYING TIMES LEADERSHIP SOCIETY OF ARIZONA OFFERS A SUMMER PROGRAM FOR TODAY’S TWEENS AND TEENS
By Michelle Talsma Everson
S
eventh through twelfth grades are years of big changes where young students go from tweens learning to juggle multiple classes to seniors making decisions on what to do post-graduation. During these formative years, while learning core academic subjects is important, learning soft skills such as leadership, teamwork, time management, and more, is also vital. Whether your student has been learning online this past year or in the classroom, chances are that they could benefit from some one-onone guidance and tips on how to thrive during even the most challenging times. This is why the Leadership Society of Arizona (LSA) was created. Dr. Jacob Kashiwagi is the chairman of LSA. He shares that the LSA’s leadership model is based on 28 years of business management research, which commenced at Arizona State University (ASU). His father, Dr. Dean Kashiwagi, and he taught skills originally intended for businesses and organizations to students at ASU.
myhyperlocalnews.com
“We taught honors courses at ASU that took the business model of running an organization more efficiently and helped students to use those skills in their own lives,” Dr. Kashiwagi says. “These skills included deductive logic and leadership and the students loved it. Classes were always full and often students’ grades and lives improved.” This leadership model (known as “The Best Value Approach” business model by Dr. Dean Kashiwagi) has been developed through 2,000+ global projects valued at over $6.6 billion. LSA has adjusted this model for teens, parents, and teachers. They have supported over 2,300 students in seven years, according to the organization.
While teaching this model at ASU, two then-students, Jake Gunnoe, PhD, and Alfredo O. Rivera, PhD, received funding to take these same principles and create a way for them to help high school students from all different backgrounds. Through this new team, LSA was born. “In college, I felt unprepared for the real world. I was stressed and lacked direction,” says Gunnoe. “I co-founded LSA to help students find stability, direction, and confidence before they get to college.” LSA is comprised of researchers, educators, and consultants. Since 2013, they have been developing tools and processes to improve the delivery of educational services. They use an industry-proven professional development model to support students, parents, teachers, and professional organizations. This summer, local students have the chance to learn these tools through LSA’s one-of-a-kind online summer program. “We have found that stability, happiness, and success come from understanding leadership and social skills,” according to the organization. “But you cannot force teenagers to learn these principles. Students must learn how to apply them in their own lives and at their own pace.”
In this program, which uses Dr. Kashiwagi’s NoInfluence Method mentoring program, students meet four days a week for three weeks for fun and interactive activities that relate to their interests. Students work one-on-one with a certified life coach to set goals, form successful habits, and plan for their futures. “The online summer program is very individual based; the instructor to student ratio is as high as 1:3,” says Dr. Kashiwagi. “This allows for more interaction time. The program is activity-based and flexible, and it’s perfect for students who, because of this, can practice socializing.” SOME OF THE ONLINE SUMMER PROGRAM’S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: • Objective: Have fun and teach students principles of success that lead them to live happier lives. • Timeline: 3 weeks, 4 days per week, 1 hour classes • Platform: They use a highly interactive online platform called Remo. It allows students to work in smaller groups. This allows for more activities, networking, and discussion. • Individual Coaching: Each student works one-onone with a life coach every week. • Additional Resources: Access to a library of 20 hours of additional lessons and material. “Every day, students will meet in a virtual class to complete activities and team building. Each week, courses will focus on a specific topic proven to make professionals more successful,” according to LSA. “During one-on-one coaching calls, coaches will get to know their students and help them with what they want (e.g. develop hobbies, create routines, strengthen relationships with family, and overcome personal challenges).” This course is for students ages 12 on up (junior high through high school) and, to help families during the pandemic, is available at a significantly lower rate than in years prior. For families who need the help, Dr. Kashiwagi shares that scholarships and financial help is available. In addition to the summer program, LSA also offers workshops, free classes, an active YouTube channel, and even a free parents course online. They do this all while maintaining a zero operating budget as a nonprofit. Registration for the online summer program is now available. To learn more, visit leadaz.org/summer. Niederdrenk says, “In today’s environment, people value gated communities that offer peace and tranquility, safety and privacy, indoor/outdoor and healthy living environments, bringing back into their homes all possible luxury amenities.” De Melo adds, “There is no other community in Arizona like Crown Canyon, due to its privacy, exclusivity, and proximity, which, coupled with the quality of design and construction, will no doubt be home to some of the Valley’s most prominent residents.” Included in those who will call Crown Canyon home is the developer himself. Rich Brock, founder of BedBrock Developers, says, “I am excited to break ground on my home in the coming months, as there is no other property like Crown Canyon in the entire Valley. It has solitude, security and exclusivity, while still being close to everything. It’s literally a desert jewel in the heart of the city.” Kevin Groman, owner and principal at
Crown Canyon Capital, adds, “When I first acquired the land several years ago, I knew it was really special and was fortunate to compile a team of the most respected individuals in the industry, and then waited for the right time, and now is the right time. I remember when Vern Swaback, Frank Lloyd Wright’s youngest apprentice,
wisely said, ‘Crown Canyon will be an architectural symphony with each home adding to the canyon’s natural beauty’ and now that we have broken ground the architectural symphony has begun.” For more information, visit crowncanyon. com.

Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks from Local Experts ith spring just around the corner, it is a great time open the windows, watch the flowers bloom and, of course, start your spring cleaning. Although this may seem like a daunting task, cleaning does not have to be such a chore.
don’t know what to grab. Tapia says to get a Magic Eraser, especially if you have little ones who like to draw on the wall. Another staple at Proficient Shield, LLC is a pumice scouring stone, which helps remove stubborn lime scale toilet rings and stains. These two items are affordable and will make cleaning a breeze.
Samuel Tapia, owner of Proficient Shield, LLC, says there are three simple steps to cleaning your house: don’t forget about little spaces, stay on top of it, and invest in a few staple cleaning products.
Lisa Marshman, with Johnson’s Home Cleaning, has been cleaning Valley homes for over 25 years. She happily shares some great tips about how to make spring cleaning more efficient.
DON’T FORGET ABOUT LITTLE SPACES When cleaning a house, people often focus on big spaces like bedrooms, bathrooms or the kitchen. While that’s great, there are a ton of little spaces that get neglected in the process. Some of these areas include celling fans and light fixtures. Living in Arizona, celling fans accumulate a lot of dust, but it goes unnoticed since the fans are almost always in motion. Make sure to give these a good dusting at least once a month. Light fixtures also get dusty and grimy. Give lightbulbs a quick cleaning to brighten up the room and make a huge difference.
CLEAN TOP TO BOTTOM “Start cleaning the highest areas in the home first and work your way down. This will help cover all spots and prioritize the areas that collect the most dust and dirt,” says Marshman.

STAY ON TOP OF IT Tapia explains, “Do a deep clean once a year; spring is a perfect time for this. From there, if you clean weekly, biweekly or monthly it will not be as big of an undertaking. When cleaning the first time, it may take longer but the simple upkeep will make your life so much easier.” INVEST IN A FEW STAPLE CLEANING PRODUCTS The options in the cleaning aisle can be overwhelming, especially when you
ORGANIZE AND DECLUTTER Marshman tells her clients to start by removing all the odds and ends that accumulate in a house. Examples include mail that needs to be tossed, bills that needs to be paid, shoes that are left in odd places. “It is hard to start the deep cleaning process when there is so much stuff in the way,” she says. “Use springtime as an opportunity to organize and declutter. Make sure to pack away winter clothes and thick blankets to make more room. We definitely don’t need those in the summer.” And, if spring cleaning seems like an overwhelming task to take on, don’t hesitate to call in the pros for help. Estate Planning for the Blended Family By Libby Banks, The Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC
I
n first marriages, couples generally have identical goals for their estate planning: take care of the surviving spouse for as long as he or she lives, then distribute what’s left to their children. But second marriages can be different. The blended family – his children, her children and sometimes their children as well – makes for more complicated planning. Each spouse may have separate assets as well as their joint, community assets. Both usually want at least some of their assets to go to their own children after they die. At the same time, they want to make sure the surviving spouse has enough to live on. With a blended family, a couple has to put a plan in place if they want to be sure their goals are met. This won’t happen automatically. Think about one of the most famous of blended families – the Brady Bunch. What happens if Carol and Mike have all their assets in joint tenancy and don’t have a will or trust? If Mike is the first to die, Carol will get all the couple’s joint assets. But then
what happens when Carol dies? Without a will or trust, state law steps in. Arizona law says that Carol’s children get her assets. That means the three girls get everything, and Mike’s boys are left out. I’ll leave it to your imagination on whether those girls are going to share the wealth. If Mike and Carol’s plan was to divide everything between all six of the kids, the failure to plan made sure that didn’t happen. Mike and Carol may want to be sure that the survivor of them is well cared for, but they also want to be sure their own kids share in what’s left after they are both gone. They can plan for this in their trust. The trust can provide that some of their assets go to an irrevocable trust at the first spouse’s death. The surviving spouse is the beneficiary during his or her lifetime. The trust, however, says where the assets left in the trust go when the survivor passes, and the survivor can’t change that. This way the first spouse to die is assured that some of the assets will be distributed to his or her children when the second passes. There are many factors going into estate planning for the blended family. However, most couples do have
one common goal, which is doing the right thing for everyone involved: themselves, their spouse, their children, and their spouse’s children. A good estate planning attorney can help put together a plan that accomplishes your goals. If you would like my help, call me at 602-375-6752 or contact me on my website, LibbyBanks.com.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and prevention, the public health actions necessary to reduce the spread of COVID-19 can also contribute to increased feelings of isolation, loneliness, and increased stress and anxiety. One community initiative in North Phoenix is taking the topic head on, coming together via social media and the Internet to increase coping mechanisms and understanding among locals. “We hope to take part in improving the lives of community members through education, connection building, reducing stigma, resource building, and giving people hope,” says licensed clinical social worker Jamie Born. The North Phoenix Community Mental Wellness Group is a community-led safe space for individuals to come and find support and resources to meet their mental health needs in addressing the things they are struggling with. “The hope is to bring together the community’s experiences and carrying levels of knowledge in the mental health arena to come up with ideas and ways to better the lives in our community,” Born shares.
says. “This, combined with the political atmosphere and the pandemic, people are struggling and are disconnected and disillusioned.” People already involved in the project come from all walks of life, from a mom of two teens who has seen the devastation of un-checked mental health needs first-hand to school counselors, addiction treatment specialists, and a child psychologist. One member of the group knows the needs in the mental health community through her own personal struggles. Cassidy Lundgren was diagnosed with depression after her freshman year of college and has spent the past 20 years learning the ins and outs of her illness, as well as how to manage it. “I have been so thankful that I have been able to help guide [my kids] through their issues because of my own experiences with mental illness,” Lundgren shares. “Struggle leads to empathy and strength. And hopefully as we become more open and aware of these diseases, we can not only help our children, but those around us.”
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness that present with ranging degrees of severity from mild to moderate to severe. According to Born, people in the North Phoenix community are struggling to find timely access to resources of any type.
To learn more about the project, locals can join the North Phoenix Community Mental Wellness Group on Facebook. The group is set to private to protect the participants but interested individuals can request to join. The community will be holding their first forum virtually on March 10 at 7 p.m. Community members are invited to participate via Zoom by going to https://us02web.zoom.us/j/5084667302.
“There have been multiple mental health tragedies that have occurred over the past few years in our community,” she

Naturopathic Support for Seasonal Allergies By Dr. Jenna Dye, Naturopathic Physician
I
t is that time of year again. The Arizona weather is amazing. The trees and flowers are blooming, and the pollen is circulating in the air. For some of us, this change of weather brings on the sneezes, sniffles, coughing, itchy and wheezing. These symptoms make it difficult to enjoy this beautiful time of year. You don’t have to be miserable. There are some simple, natural ways to reduce your allergen exposure and conquer spring. REDUCE YOUR IN-HOME ALLERGENS We are exposed to many allergens in our home. I recommend purchasing a good quality HEPA air purifier and running it 24/7 during allergy season (I run mine year-round). Allergen exposure is especially high when we are sleeping so having it in the bedroom is beneficial. Just make sure to change the filters regularly. If you have carpet in your home, vacuum at least twice per week to help decrease your exposure. If allergies are severe and you have pets, you may want to consider an alternative flooring. Don’t forget to clean your windowsills, blinds and ceiling fans. They love to collect dust and we often forget about them. You can also eliminate dust mites by placing your pillows, comforters and blankets in the dryer on high heat for 10 minutes just once per week. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY LIFESTYLE Allergy symptoms originate from underlying inflammation and overreaction in the body. Any additional factors that cause inflammation in the body may worsen symptoms. This can include foods, chemicals and stress. By reducing your toxic load, your body can better handle the allergens. Choose foods that are nutrient dense such as green leafy vegetables and antioxidant rich fruits. Avoid dairy products as they can add to inflammation, produce more mucus and aggravate current allergy symptoms. Reduce processed and high sugar foods and drink ample water. If you myhyperlocalnews.com
have food sensitivities, avoiding these during an allergy flare up can be helpful. Work on stress management. Stress negatively effects the immune system, which results in increased inflammation and a decreased ability for the body to handle allergen exposure. Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and cultivate healthy relationships in your life. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM If you suffer from allergies you may be more prone to illnesses such as sinus infections and other respiratory conditions. Make sure your immune system is in tip top shape before the allergy season begins. Daily Vitamin C can boost immunity and can act as mild antihistamine. Local raw honey can be used daily to help prime the system for the upcoming allergy season. A simple nasal rinse with saline, such as a neti-pot, can help decrease and prevent that stubborn stuffy nose. SEE YOUR NATUROPATHIC PHYSICIAN A naturopathic physician can offer a more individualized approach for you and your specific allergy symptoms. This is achieved by treating any underlying illnesses, supporting your foundational health, and decreasing inflammation. This support along with modifying your diet, reducing your exposure, and boosting your immune system can allow you to start enjoying this gorgeous time of year. Dr. Jenna Dye is a licensed naturopathic physician. Her role is to support the body’s foundation to restore and maintain optimal health. Together with her patients, this is achieved by identifying and removing barriers that may be impacting health while creating a healing environment. For more information, visit drjennadye.com.

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER
A
dults often describe attention deficit disorder (ADHD) as feeling like everyone else is on the escalator while they’re taking the world’s most tortuous staircase. Eventually they arrive at the destination, but it takes exponentially more effort to get there. ADHD is estimated to affect 5-10% of the population and is widely under-diagnosed. A common symptom is feeling like your brain is trying to take a straight path but is constantly being pulled off course. You may find yourself trying to set reminders and using tools to avoid even simple oversights like forgetting your keys three times before leaving the house. Attention deficit is disorder is one of the most common mental health conditions that we encounter at Uptown Psychiatry. Although the diagnosis is often made in adulthood, the symptoms of ADHD have been present since childhood. Once the diagnosis is discovered, clients often look back and realize the impact it has had throughout their lifetime. Fortunately, ADHD is one of the most treatable conditions we encounter and it doesn’t take long to realize the benefits of treatment.

Entertainment THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE DOWNRIGHT UGLY
The films of this year’s Sundance Film Festival soon to be on a screen near you? BY A.D. BEAL
30 • March 2021 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
Censor: Censor reminded me a lot of the Swedish film Evil Ed, and that’s not a bad thing. While it may lean a bit too hard into the ambiguous nature, the lead performance by Niamh Algar makes you buy into the unnerving feeling emanating from the world created by the story. Of the films I previewed at the festival, Censor is one of the most impressive in terms of its technique, especially with the production design and editing. The film almost perfectly recaptures the style and look of old 70s and 80s horror films that it tributes. It could have gone a bit further with how it handles the feelings of guilt and the line between fiction and reality, but those shortcomings don’t in any way ruin the film for me. On The Count Of Three: This film could have easily gone sideways with such a tricky subject matter. Fortunately, Jerrod Carmichael, one of the festival’s major actor-to-director debuts, handles it masterfully. He treats the subject of mental illness and depression with the care they deserve while also bolstering the script’s clever usage of dark comedy. Carmichael and his co-star Christopher Abbott show us believable performances and demonstrate what truly great chemistry can do for a film. On The Count of Three all comes together for a sincere and brutally honest story that works.
Mass: For nearly two hours, director Fran Kranz makes a conversation between two couples feel more intense than most action movies. The lead actors of Mass (Jason Isaacs, Martha Plimpton, Ann Downd and Reed Birney) demand your attention throughout the film by conveying uncomfortable feelings and grief in ways that make you feel as if you are part of the group. Kranz continues to reel us in by showing off his behind the camera talents, bringing you in and giving you your own seat at the table. This film keeps a steady pace, and the writing has some truly devastating dialogue. Mass is a wonderful example of a one-location set film using all of its limits to their fullest potential.
The Sparks Brothers: If you’re a fan of both Sparks and Edgar Wright, you’ll more than likely enjoy this latest collaboration, The Sparks Brothers. Creating a story that is far more entertaining to watch than your usual talking heads documentary, the duo’s stories are likable, and their creative process keeps you entranced throughout the film. If there is one issue, it’s that the documentary doesn’t have much in terms of conflict. The Sparks Brothers is a mellow and overall good film for newcomers or longtime fans. To find out the hot new movies coming to a streaming service near you in March, visit us online at myhyperlocalnews.com.
