CENSUS DAY IS QUICKLY APPROACHING!

CENSUS DAY—APRIL 1, 2020—IS QUICKLY APPROACHING! This month, lookout for information coming to your mailboxes about the 2020 Census. Your participation is critical! Counting everyone in your household in the 2020 Census is your opportunity to help your community receive funding for public programs and services.

Every decade since 1790, the United States has counted its population. The U.S. Census Bureau uses that data to allocate $675 billion in federal funds to support programs in education, healthcare, transportation, parks and recreation services, and other important local resources.

In Arizona, census data helps with the distribution of federal funding across 55 programs, including the National Lunch Program, federal student loan programs, and many other programs that enhance quality of life. For each person counted, the state receives $2,959 in federal funding totaling more than $20 billion per year, which goes toward vital services including schools, emergency services, and hospitals. There will be three secure and confidential ways to respond to the census. Each household will receive a code in the mail in March, directing the head of the household to complete the questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail. Each method takes under 10 minutes to complete and is completely safe and secure. The Census questionnaire asks you to share demographic information, but your answers are strictly kept private and anonymous, even to other government agencies. Title 13 of the U.S. Code prohibits the Census Bureau from releasing any identifiable information about you or anyone else in your household. This law extends to protect your information from being shared with any person, organization, court, business or government agency, including law enforcement.

Anyone employed by the Census Bureau is sworn under oath to protect any identifiable information. Violating this law is a federal crime which could result in a $250,000 fine and/or upto five years in jail. These strict penalties are put in place to ensure that census data is only used to generate the statistics that guide the distribution of federal funding and allocation of congressional representation. Phoenix has made it a priority to educate the public about the census and ensure a complete count. I serve on Phoenix’s 2020 Census Ad Hoc Committee, which helps lead Census-related efforts.

REMINISCING ABOUT NORTH 32ND By Allison Barnett

BEFORE THE CONSTRUCTION OF SR-51, NORTH 32ND STREET FUNCTIONED AS THE MAJOR ARTERIAL ROAD FROM CENTRAL PHOENIX TO NORTHERN PHOENIX. During this time, businesses on North 32nd flourished. There were movie theaters, bowling alleys, and more. Once SR-51 was completed, traffic was diverted from North 32nd to SR-51 which contributed to less patrons of the businesses along the corridor. Unfortunately, this caused a period of time where the community experienced a downturn. Thanks to the work of now Supervisor Bill Gates and many community members who created a vision for how to rebuild the community nearly a decade ago, we are seeing the manifestation of their vision for North 32nd begin to shine again. A unique characteristic about our North 32nd community is that in addition to new residents from other areas, there are many people that have lived in the community a long time or moved away and returned to call this home again. The fun of having this rich history is that we enjoy learning from people with memories about the last time that North 32nd was “the place to be.” Recently on our North 32nd Facebook page and group, we had a lot of fun seeing just how much people could remember about what existed here before. Some of the fun facts that were shared: • The many movie memories enjoyed at the theater where Hallmark is now located • Chompie’s was originally on 32nd St. where VIP Airsoft is now located before it moved to PV Mall • Thrifty used to be on 32nd St., which was a favorite place to grab a scoop of ice cream • Bike riding has always been a favorite, whether it was biking to businesses or riding BMX in the Preserve or on vacant lots • Several pizza places used to be here like Shakeys and Peter Piper north32ndnews.com

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) reported that Arizona’s arts and culture industries contribute $9 billion to the state’s economy, employing 90,000 Arizonans. At the same time, research shows that Arizona arts and culture organizations generate an average of an additional $1.20 in spending for every dollar they invest, contributing millions to the Arizona economy and state and local tax revenues. EXPRESS YOUR EMOTIONS THROUGH SPLATTER ART

YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT THE RAGE ROOMS AND AXE THROWING, BUT THERE IS NOW A MORE ARTISTIC (YET JUST AS THERAPEUTIC!) WAY TO EXPRESS SOME EMOTION (AND GET A COOL ART PIECE OUT OF IT!) AT CRAFT NIGHTS BY THE HIPPIE HOBBY LOCATED AT 3241 E. SHEA BOULEVARD. The new Splatter! area is now open and offering people a creative and fun way to get out some emotions through art therapy. Craft Nights’ Splatter! area provides guests a unique opportunity to release some emotions (whether sad or angry or happy and joyful!) while having a fun date, girls night out or family hour. Inspired by the art of Jackson Pollock, considered to be the father of splatter paint art and a standout in the abstract impressionist movement, the owners of Craft Nights are excited to introduce a new way for people to interact with art while expressing an emotion and allowing for some therapeutic “paint throwing.”

Each Splatter! session is about one hour long, including dressing/undressing (booties, smocks, scrub pants, goggles and hair nets are provided) as well as canvas prep time. WATER SECURITY FOR THE VALLEY AT A TIME WHEN POLITICAL DIVISION SEEMS TO SEEP INTO EVERY CONVERSATION, THE CITY OF PHOENIX IS WORKING ACROSS PARTY AND AGENCY LINES TO GET THINGS DONE. Water security is extremely important for a desert city like Phoenix, and the city’s success depends on securing proper water infrastructure across the valley. Over the past months, Phoenix’s Water Department has examined ways to transfer water to North Phoenix from an existing water treatment facility to help lessen dependency on an increasingly uncertain Colorado River water supply. The most direct route brought a new pipeline through Dreamy Draw Park. Neighbors surrounding the park voiced concerns about what this pipeline could mean for the park’s eco-system. The city took these concerns as an opportunity to bring the plans back to the drawing board and re-examine every possible route. During this process, the city approached ADOT about purchasing land directly parallel to SR-51 that would allow the pipeline to be safely constructed while keeping the park largely undisturbed. Part of my job as State Representative is to help ensure I am doing all I can to have state agencies engaged and at the table when issues arise in our neighborhoods. This cross-governmental agreement is a great example of multiple branches working together to get things done for the people of Phoenix,” said Representative Lieberman. Councilwoman Debra Stark, who helped bring this issue to the forefront, echoed the need for more cross-collaboration. Councilwoman Stark stated, “When I am out in the community talking to neighbors, volunteers and others, they don’t want to hear that bureaucracy is the reason problems can’t get solved. They want innovation and collaboration and I am proud that this agreement represents both of those elements.”

MARICOPA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS APPROVE 229 VOTING LOCATIONS TO REDUCE WAIT TIMES AND IMPROVE THE VOTER EXPERIENCE, THE MARICOPA COUNTY ELECTIONS DEPARTMENT IS MORE THAN TRIPLING THE NUMBER OF VOTING LOCATIONS FOR THE MARCH 17, 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE ELECTION. On Election Day, voters will have 229 voting locations, including 40 locations that will serve as vote anywhere locations. The Elections Department reviewed historic turnout models, mapped voting patterns and worked with community partners to increase polling locations from 60 in 2016 to 229 this election. GIVING HOPE: CHILDREN’S CANCER NETWORK

he Children’s Cancer Network (CCN), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing assistance to Arizona families battling childhood cancer. The organization was established in 2004, but the impetus for its foundation began in 1993, when Steve and Patti Luttrell’s then five-year-old son Jeff was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The family was devastated and shocked. Jeff received treatment — including multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and finally a bone marrow transplant in order to treat the initial cancer and its four subsequent relapses. However, after nine years of being cancer free, Jeff was diagnosed with a secondary cancer, squamous cell cancer of the tongue. So, at the age of 21, Jeff had numerous additional surgeries and two types of radiation to rid his body again of cancer. Four years later, at the age of 25, this cancer re-occurred. Today, Jeff is doing well and has graduated with a graphic design degree. However, his experience led the Luttrells to want to help other families through this time. According to the Network, the emotions and experiences throughout cancer treatment and after may be complex and life changing. Often these emotions are difficult to comprehend for those who have not been there. Many families dealing with childhood cancer are faced with a new uncertainty regarding their futures. There likely are questions and needs that never would have been contemplated prior to their child’s diagnosis. Children’s Cancer Network has

been formed to focus on the needs of families and their children with cancer. The Luttells’ daughter Jenny was instrumental in the creation of the fashion show that features children dealing with cancer as well as their siblings. It was designed to be a fun and empowering event that helped to raise money to contribute to the emergency fund for families undergoing bone marrow transplant. In addition to the Fashion show, The Children’s Cancer Network has an auction and luncheon which donates raised funds to the Pediatric Bone Marrow Emergency Funds at Phoenix Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center. The Network also hosts a variety of events and experiences for children/teens battling childhood cancer, along with their families at no cost. One of their most exciting upcoming fundraising events is their Run to Fight Children’s Cancer 5k/10k, which will be held April 5. Register online for the event at RunToFightCancer.com. Run to Fight Children’s Cancer is the largest race in Arizona dedicated solely to pediatric cancer. Now in its tenth year, the race unites the community in building awareness of childhood cancer and raising much-needed funds for research, treatments, patient education and a host of support services for families battling the disease. To date, CCN has awarded more than $30,000 in scholarships each year, distributed more than $75,000 in emergency gas and food cards annually, and served more than 750 families yearly through its family-centered programing. KIDS’ CORNER TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR CHILD INVOLVED IN MUSIC

usic is an important part of our lives. It enriches us emotionally, spiritually, and intellectually. Studies have shown that music improves cognitive development in children, as well as brain efficiency, learning speed, and overall brain health. Learning to play a musical instrument helps individuals understand mathematical concepts, develop better motor skills, teaches discipline, inspires creativity, and can help build confidence, self-esteem and social skills. There are so many different instruments and types of music that it’s difficult to know where to begin, so here are some suggestions for beginning your child’s musical journey. FIND THE RIGHT MUSICAL INSTRUMENT AND LESSONS FOR YOUR CHILD It’s important to find a music program and musical instrument that suits your child’s age and interests. Most public schools have music programs that begin teaching instruments around the fourth and fifth grade, but you can begin private lessons as young as five or six years old. Work with your kid to see what they are interested in before you get started with the time and expense of formal lessons. Here are a few important factors to keep in mind: • Age, Size, and Physical Limitations: Consider the age, size, and physical limitations of your child when you choose an instrument.

Don’t let lessons cause your kid’s schoolwork or other activities to suffer or add undue stress for you or your family. Musical Instrument Museum The Musical Instrument Museum, also known as the MIM, is a state-of-the-art facility that showcases instruments and music from every genre and almost every country in the world. The MIM displays more than 6,500 instruments, allowing visitors to see and hear music and instruments from around the globe. The museum also provides visitors a hands-on experience of playing different instruments,

and offer many camps and educational programs for kids and adults alike. Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Solid Rock is a non-profit organization started by local celebrity Alice Cooper. Their mission is to make a difference in the lives of teens by providing music, arts, and vocational programs in the field of entertainment. They challenge teens to discover their passion through music, dance, video and sound production, self-expression, and creativity. Sounds Academy Sounds Academy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to teach, mentor, and provide musical experiences and opportunities to underserved youth in the Phoenix area. Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock: NOT YOUR ORDINARY TEEN CENTER

ne of the coolest things I love about Arizona is the amazing talent that has been born out of this state and the incredible amount of celebrity love we have here. I’m not sure there is another rock star that has been as supportive of the state as former wildman rocker Alice Cooper. A resident of the valley for more than 60 years, Alice Cooper and his wife Sheryl’s philanthropic efforts are truly something to behold — especially when you get to see them firsthand when you enter the Solid Rock Teen Center (and that is just one area of focus of the Coopers’ 25+ years of philanthropic generosity). I’ve known that Solid Rock has been at the corner of 32nd Street and Thunderbird for quite some time (seven and a half years, to be exact), but I’ve never been in and never really knew what the center was all about. Until now.

Randy Spencer, a 25-year veteran of the music industry, is in charge of Phoenix Teen Center’s Community Partnerships and was nice enough to give me the grand tour of the 28,000-square-foot facility. What looks somewhat unpresumptuous from the outside holds a true wonderland of the arts within. The most incredible part of the Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center is that everything is offered 100 percent free to teens ages 12 through 20. They are

welcome to come and simply hang out (a game room offers up couches to lounge or do homework, ping pong and other game tables, as well as a full stage while guitars hang along the walls that youth are welcome to use for an impromptu solo for example) or participate in the many classes, open jam sessions or art sessions as often as they want. The art studio is a place where students can come and draw or participate in a volunteer or instructor-led class. The Teen Center is also home to a dance studio that offers a full schedule of free classes from yoga to hip hop and more. Hodgie Jo, Director of Dance for the Center, also teaches classes in addition to other instructors including Sheryl, an amazing performer in her own right. While the Teen Center is run by about eight staff members and more than 200 volunteers, they also have amazing amounts of famous people from around the world — from artists and rock stars to dancers — lend their time and talents to help the teens advance in their fields of interest or simply learn something new. Another important aspect that is inadvertently showcased is the foundation of love and support that Alice and Sheryl provide through simply being who they are — the longtime couple have been together for more than 32 years and according to Randy are a great example for teens of flourishing relationships. A recording studio, video production, private “jam”

rooms, and a large venue for events and performances all reside in this unassuming building; each space offering teens an unparalleled opportunity to learn and grow in multiple areas of the arts. For those teens looking to advance their music careers, they are welcome to use the recording studio to make and record their own demos that they are free to take and use. Teens can also learn about video editing and more and even produce video with a real green screen. Ultimately, Alice Cooper Solid Rock Teen Center gives kids the tools, resources and opportunities to explore their interests in the musical and performing arts in a safe, caring and all-inclusive environment that bucks stereotypes and encourages teens to encourage and support one another. In fact, Randy notes that some of the best friendships and camaraderie have been formed among youth here because they come together as strangers but are united by common interests. “We have so many amazing stories of youth that have come here feeling like they didn’t have a group of friends or even whose families weren’t able to be there for them, and then they form friendships here that become like family,” says Randy. And that is a true testament to the Coopers’ initial vision and mission for the Teen Center — to fill a need for teens that gives them a safe environment in which to flourish and to make an everlasting difference in their lives.

COVER STORY Aside from meeting some of the world’s greatest talents, teens are also welcome to participate in some of Alice Cooper’s performance opportunities including Alice Cooper Christmas Pudding, Christmas at The Rock for Kids, Rock the Runway Fashion Show coming up on April 4 (which showcases models of all shapes, sizes, colors, and genders), the Alice Copper Celebrity Golf Tournament, Comic-Con, Alice Cooper’s Schools Out Talent Showcase as well as corporate fundraising and organization events. Another goal Randy says is to have the teens run the Center themselves… and they are working toward that goal. Three teens have recently been hired on at The Center. That is particularly important to Randy, who says one of his personal goals is to give teens their first paycheck. When the Teen Center first opened, there was always intent to add more; to fill the need that the Coopers see for artistic or musically-inclined teens that don’t really have a place where they can go and pursue their interests or to simply have a safe space of refuge. And that vision is being met with a second Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center opening in Mesa this fall. The East Valley Center will be 11,000 square foot and convenient to a Light Rail allowing teens easy access. “We’d love to open as many Centers as there is a need for,” says Randy. “We pursue high excellence and quality for young people, and anyone is welcome to come by and take a look at what we are doing here.” The Teen Center is free and open to all teens ages 12 to 20 years old Monday through Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There is a calendar online of all the various weekly activities and special events including Modern Recording Techniques, Flash Multimedia Class, Movie Night (as well as off-site movie nights at nearby theaters), Creative Arts, Illustration, Songwriting and more. Fresh smoothies and dinner are even offered on specific dates and times. Free guitar, bass, drums, piano and vocal classes are also offered, but must be scheduled in advance. Instruments are available onsite to practice with for free anytime during Center hours. Many of the fundraising events that the Coopers produce and are involved in benefit the Teen Center directly as well as allowing additional opportunities for the teens. Hosted by Sheryl Cooper and directed by Hodgie Jo, the Rock the Runway Fashion Show presented by Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock takes place April 4 at the Teen Center from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is free to attend. Featuring numerous musical performances and fashion from Stop Staring Clothing (LA) to the Salvation Army. Another great fundraiser for the Center is the Alice Cooper’s 23rd Annual Rock and Roll Golf Classic and Fundraising Bash, which takes place Sunday, April 26. Learning to play a musical instrument, rehearsing a dance performance, or executing a mural requires long hours of practice, focus and perseverance – all components of selfdiscipline, a trait that many youth are desperately lacking. STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT THE NEW FICO SCORING CHANGES By John Cabezas with LIV AZ Realty

n case you haven’t heard, the three reporting agencies (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian), are changing the way they calculate FICO scores. I’ll bet you are wondering how these changes will affect purchasing or refinancing a home. Everyone who heard the news is wondering the same thing. FICO's recently announced credit scoring changes probably won't make a difference, but one never knows. It is said that the two greatest mysteries in life are why cows always face north or south when grazing or standing, and how the credit bureaus calculate FICO Scores. The cow thing is really cool, I’ll bet you didn’t know that. Let’s look at these changes in more detail… The new FICO scoring is now called FICO 10. This updated scoring model, which will take effect this summer, is causing genuine concern. Many believe that scores will likely drop by 20 points or more for millions of Americans. If you are one of those affected by this new scoring,

accessing credit will become more difficult and more expensive.

I’ve spoken with Bob Wasieko, Branch Manager for VIP Mortgage, and here’s what you need to know: The majority of mortgage lenders will not immediately adopt the new FICO 10 model. Many still use the older FICO score models. Here is the bad news: Consumers who carry a lot of debt will likely be most affected by the new model. In the past, you could move your debt around or get a debt consolidation loan and find ways to manage your FICO score. Unfortunately for consumers, that won’t work anymore. Unless you pay them down, it will not change your score. Experian, Transunion, and Equifax will now look at trends within your credit usage. The FICO 10T (one version of the new model), looks deeper into how individuals have managed their credit over the last 24 months. The three reporting agencies consider this to be very important; basically, they are looking to see how you manage your money, and if you are overextending yourself. By looking at these trends, they feel they can better judge your creditworthiness.

Of course, the basics of good credit will always remain the same. Here are the major points of importance in managing your score: • Always pay your bills on time and pay more than the minimum. • Avoid new credit and keep a mix of credit types in use (such as credit cards and auto loans). The mix of credit is one of the most important things you can do to manage your credit. • Closing accounts can hurt your credit score as well. So, before closing an account, ask a professional lender or Realtor. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… I love Arizona. We came from Hawaii, which was my last duty station once I retired from the Army after 24 years of service. I came to Arizona because my wife joined the Air Force once I retired and we got stationed at Luke AFB. When I first arrived here, it was September and it was starting cool down. I had no idea how hot it would be in the summer. There is so much to do in Arizona; skiing, fishing, boating, and sweating. Working here is also amazing. I love my patients, especially my older ones who have the most incredible stories. I like to take my time and really get to know my patients. We pride ourselves in our great bedside manner and a friendly environment. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... Legends of The Fall. Only because it had so many elements that I enjoy. It has a lot of great landscape scenery and a great story.

This results in the rainbow colors we see (dispersion) while the light reflected from the facets causes the flash and glitter. CHANGES IN THE LAW MAY CHANGE YOUR

ESTATE PLAN FOR YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS By Libby Banks, the Law Office of Libby Banks, PLLC

new law governing beneficiaries of your retirement accounts could create a tax disaster or result in large distributions to beneficiaries (like minors, young adults and irresponsible heirs) who are ill-equipped to manage the funds. That law, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement Act (SECURE Act) became effective January 1, 2020. This law may upset your estate plan because the Act requires most designated beneficiaries (other than spouses) to withdraw the entire balance of your retirement account within 10 years of inheriting the account. For anyone who has their trust as the beneficiary of their retirement account, it is imperative to have a trust review and evaluate the options for their beneficiaries. Under the old law, all beneficiaries of inherited

retirement accounts could stretch out distributions over their individual life expectancy, meaning your younger beneficiaries would take smaller distributions usually over a long time period, resulting in lower taxes. Under the SECURE Act, most beneficiaries (not including spouses) must withdraw the entire IRA over a period of 10 years. That shorter 10-year time frame for taking distributions will result in the acceleration of income tax due.

Just as important, if you haven’t had a review of your estate plan in a while, you should make an appointment with an attorney to go over it. I recommend a review at least every three years. Your old trust needs a review and a possible change because a trust created while the old law was in place took into account the ability to stretch retirement account distributions out over a beneficiary’s lifetime. With that option eliminated, that same helpful trust could now result in much higher taxes, and large distributions to the ultimate beneficiaries, which may not be what you want. This change in law means that a proper analysis of your estate planning goals, and a review of your estate documents is needed to be sure you have properly planned for your beneficiaries.

ADOR: TAXPAYERS, BE ON LOOK OUT FOR IDENTITY THIEVES DURING TAX SEASON

he Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) treats detecting and stopping fraud with paramount importance and reminds taxpayers that tax filing season is a time to be aware of identity thieves looking for ways to commit tax fraud. The department points to phishing schemes, card-skimming devices, unsecure Wi-Fi networks, data breaches, computer viruses, unsafe smartphone apps, and hacking email accounts as ways identities are stolen. TIPS TO HELP PREVENT BEING THE VICTIM OF IDENTITY THEFT: • Do not carry identification with your Social Security Number (SSN) on it. • If someone wants your SSN, always ask why because it is not always required. • Keep personal and confidential information in a secure place. • Take extra precautions when discarding personal or confidential information. • Protect personal computers, smartphones, and other devices by using anti-virus software. • Use strong passwords and never share your passwords.

• Never give personal information through unencrypted email, social media, or text messaging. One scam that targets companies and continues to be reported is the W-2 scam, which is when a phishing email is sent to someone in a company’s human resources or payroll office that appears to be from an executive of that business and asks for payroll information containing confidential information, be emailed immediately. The Arizona Department of Revenue advises staff to never respond to the email, and instead, connect with the person whose name is on the email by phone or in person to confirm its authenticity. ADOR recommends companies establish specific internal policies to address these requests and take steps to protect employee information. Arizonans can contact the Department of Revenue’s Identity Theft Call Center at (602) 716-6300, toll-free: 844-817-9691, or https://azdor.gov/ individual-income-tax-information/ identity-theft. The Arizona Department of Revenue’s fraud prevention system has stopped more than $120 million in fraudulent income tax refunds since 2015.

THE OLD W E S T HIGHWAY I

f you’re heading east towards New Mexico and want to venture off the beaten path and avoid the extreme traffic on I-10, consider taking a trip down the Old West Highway. This historic route between Apache Junction, AZ, and Lordsburg, NM, runs through the Superstition Wilderness on US Highway 60, over the Salt River Canyon between Superior and MiamiGlobe, and through the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. It continues east through tiny Arizona towns like Bylas and Safford, moving east on Highway 70 to the tiny town of Duncan, ending in Lordsburg, New Mexico. The road winds through mountains, farmland, and history on a mostly twolane road through the eastern part of the state. Here are a few of the places on the Old West Highway that we recommend visiting near the Phoenix area. APACHE TRAIL One of the most spectacular, and heart-pounding, side trips you can take from the Old West Highway is the Apache Trail. Arizona State Route 88 is a mostly unpaved, steep and winding road connecting Apache Junction to Roosevelt Lake in the Tonto National Forest. The Apache Trail, named after the Apache Indians who once used this as a regular trade route, passes through

desert, mountains, lakes, and forests in the Superstition Wilderness, on the way to places like Lost Dutchman State Park, Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, the Roosevelt Dam and the Tonto National Monument. Use caution because the Apache Trail winds steeply through 40 miles of rugged desert mountains, past deep reservoir lakes, and the narrow, winding road is unpaved from just east of the town of Tortilla Flats all the way to Roosevelt Dam. Be prepared for steep cliff drops and few safety barriers. The trail is not for the faint of heart, nor is it recommended for large RVs or trailers, but the scenery along this road is breathtaking. LOST DUTCHMAN STATE PARK Lost Dutchman State Park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains, about 40 miles east of Phoenix. The park is named after a legendary lost gold mine in the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, and is known for breathtaking scenery, trails, and wildlife. It’s also famous for having a fantastic wildflower bloom in the spring and one of the most challenging hikes in the Superstition Mountains, the renown Siphon Draw Trail that takes hikers to the top of the rock wall surface of the Flatiron.

TONTO NATIONAL MONUMENT Nestled in the cliffs overlooking Roosevelt Lake, the Tonto National Monument allows visitors to hike up hilly terrain to see ancient cliff dwellings in the pristine setting of the Tonto National Forest. The Lower Cliff Dwelling is open to the public year-round, accessible by a paved, but fairly steep path up the mountain. Check in at the Visitor Center and be sure to begin your hike before 4:00 p.m. to make sure you make it back down the trail before dark. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is only accessible by a three to four-hour guided tour, so plan ahead to book your tour in advance. SUPERIOR Superior had its origins as a mining town, drawing prospectors and mining companies to the area. Fortunately, one of those settlers was Colonel Boyce Thompson, who founded one of our favorite places to visit in the area, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Established in the 1920s, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. The Arboretum is on

Highway 60, just outside of Superior, and a beautiful spot for a day trip or a place to stop when you travel down the Old West Highway on the way to Globe. GLOBE Globe is a great town to visit to get a taste of the historic Old West Highway and Arizona’s Territorial history. Whether you want to visit ancient Indian ruins, see the historic downtown, shop for antiques, or enjoy the works of local artists, Globe has a little bit of everything. Our favorite stop in Globe is the ruins of Besh-BaGowah, a 200-room prehistoric Salado masonry pueblo overlooking Pinal Creek. The site is located in a small city park and includes a museum and gift shop with excavated items like prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts. As Arizonans, we live in a state that is full of natural wonders and beautiful scenery all year round. Many of these fantastic places are in or near the Phoenix area, so take time to visit different parts of the Sonoran Desert near you and enjoy the Arizona wilderness up close. SALTY SOW TURNS UP ON THE HEAT ON SPRING MENU WITH NEW BBQ OPTIONS By Molly Cerreta Smith

ince it arrived on the scene at Cactus and Tatum several years, Salty Sow has been and continues to be one of my favorite local restaurants. Between their oh-so-happy happy hour cocktails and bites, their brunch and their regular dining menu, everyone in my family can find something they love. It’s both casual and upscale so it’s ideal for everything from a family-style brunch with the kids to a date night out. And now I have another reason to love Salty Sow — they’ve introduced an all new BBQcentric menu! If you know anything about my family, we are kind of BBQ people. My husband has spent the past 10-plus years competing around the globe in some of the most prestigious BBQ competitions in the world. And we’ve been lucky enough to tag along, which means we’ve have the great opportunity to try some really outstanding BBQ. And yet we’re always looking to try more; especially when it’s within an environment we already love — and right in our own neighborhood. Talk about win-win!

With booth seating high top tables, bar seating and an ample Fido-friendly patio with a cozy fireplace, Salty Sow offers a variety of seating styles depending on what suits you on any given visit. The open kitchen offers diners’ a sneak peek at what’s cooking… literally.

Salty Sow’s new menu includes regulars’ favorites, so fear not! The Truffled Deviled Eggs, Green Chile Pork Stew, Duck Fat Fries and Crispy Brussels Sprouts are still highlights of the Starters + Share Plates portion of the menu. For those that haven’t tried the Green Chile Pork Stew, it’s an excellent starter for the table. While the PV Salad (featuring chicken breast, dates, avocado, blue cheese, bacon lardons, candied almonds, hard-boiled egg and sweet onion dressing) remains on my list of regular orders, I’ve been enjoying the hearty Filet Salad as my new favorite. With perfectly cooked melt-in-your-mouth slices of filet mignon, blue cheese, charred corn, cherry tomato, pepitas, crispy chile onions and chipotle ranch, it has enough Southwestern flare without being too hot. Okay, okay, let’s get to the main event already! Salty

Sow’s entrees are both familiar and adventurous at the same time so diners that don’t like to eat too far outside the box can enjoy a Hand-Cut Filet or Slow Cooked Beef Shoulder (served with Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, glazed root vegetables and a fried egg – this meal is a comforting hug on a plate) while the slow-cooked Duroc Pork Belly might call those who are a feeling a bit more culinarily curious. The Brisket Sandwich features 13-hour smoked brisket with BBQ sauce, kale slaw, onion, mayo and pickles. May I say that pickles, slaw and BBQ brisket are truly a trio of the heavens. For the voracious appetite, the wood-smoked St. Louis Style Pork Ribs are stick-toyour-ribs delicious.

I’ve always enjoyed Salty Sow’s creative bar program, so feel free to try one of their specialty cocktails to wash down a spicy or salty forkful. I love the Rosemary’s Piglet with pomegranate juice, rosemary syrup and champagne and the Sugar Spice and Everything Nice fills my need for the occasional whiskey cocktail. MOVIES MOVIE REVIEWS BAD BOYS FOR LIFE

Mike and Marcus have to deal with the fallout of an enemy that Mike put away long ago. Bad Boys for Life proves that long-dormant franchises have no excuses in not only producing something new that is great, but also taking it to the next level. It’s got the fun, over-the-top action you know and love while bringing a more neon and Asian cinema inspired style to it. Surprisingly, it also tells a more mature and caring story about family (and not in an ironic way like the Fast and Furious movies). It’s refreshing to see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence truly give their all here, while also bringing us new and well-developed characters. It may not be the gleeful anarchy of Michael Bay’s previous films, but I am thankful that it exists.

BIRDS OF PREY

Harley Quinn teams up with a group of antiheroes to fight a crime lord in Gotham City. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey is another great piece in DC’s current series of directordriven films. The sun-soaked, dirty Gotham shown here is a nice departure from the dark and dank city we typically see. This film offered an amusing tone and story with a surprising pull at the heartstrings. We have an absolutely fantastic cast here, where Margot Robbie continues to showcase that she was the perfect choice for Quinn. The newly introduced characters were also all expertly cast and showcase distinct personalities that add to the group dynamic. I especially love Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, and Ewan McGregor as a pretentious but still scary art-loving villain rounds out the troop perfectly.

THE GENTLEMEN

An Oklahoma-born businessman must fight against gangsters for control of his weed empire. When the film has Colin Farrell and a breakdancing gang on screen, it’s the rare moment that The Gentlemen gains some real audience enthusiasm. Beyond that, Guy Ritchie’s “back to form” film feels less like a homecoming and more like a depressing high school reunion. You’ve seen these characters, set ups and jokes a million times before. Ritchie doesn’t seem to do anything new with the formula. The usage of technology comes up multiple times in the film, but it doesn’t add any value or play a role in our characters’ arcs. The actors do fine with what they’re given, but again, beyond Farrell, they do nothing to elevate the material. Unfortunately, it does the worst thing a movie can do...be boring.

THE RHYTHM SECTION

A woman goes on a mission to find those responsible for the death of her family. Reed Morano has proven to be a major addition to action directors, as Rhythm Section gives her the shot to pull off some good set pieces. In particular, her car chase scene is a lovely balance between raw and exciting. The problems that I see with this flick are the messy and morally confused screenplay, wonky editing and a miscast Blake Lively. Dark storytelling can be great, but there needs to be energy behind it. Showing misery for an hour and 40 minutes doesn’t just make something dark and edgy, it makes it depressing.
