AMERICAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF NEW LONDON SERVICE will be served by a Boeing 777-200ER. It will offer 273 seats with three classes of service: Business Class; Premium Economy; and Main Cabin service.

American is the only domestic carrier with nonstop service to Europe from Sky Harbor.

“New international air service helps Phoenix grow our economy and global presence,” said Phoenix Mayor Thelda Williams. “I am excited that American Airlines will be offering year-round, direct service from Phoenix to London. We look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with American Airlines.”

AMERICA’S FRIENDLIEST AIRPORT® IS MAKING IT EVEN MORE CONVENIENT FOR TRAVELERS TO FLY NONSTOP to Europe from Phoenix. American Airlines previously announced last August that it will be offering nonstop service from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to London Heathrow Airport beginning March 31 and running through October 26. Now, American Airlines has announced this service will be offered year-round.

For travelers, this provides another valuable connection between Phoenix and Europe for both business and leisure as well as a boost to the economy. International flights to and from Phoenix bring in approximately $3 billion each year.

PNF is a facilitated stretching that can reduce limited range of motion at the joints and relieve pain. A Go Conquer client Susan W. refers to the treatment

as a stretching massage and the best part of her day. The PNF stretching allowed Susan to regain 100% range of motion in both bionic knees and she proceeded to hike Machu Pichu. Research shows that PNF can increase range of motion and function movement in just a few short treatments. Although Susan is not the only one to refer to it as a stretching massage, PNF is not a massage.

LA FITNESS UNDERTAKES MAJOR RENOVATION OF ARIZONA LOCATIONS, INTRODUCES CUTTING-EDGE, HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING CONCEPT NATIONAL FITNESS LEADER PEGS 33RD ST & BELL LOCATION AS SECOND IN NATION WITH OPENING “HIIT BY LAF” LA FITNESS, AN OPERATOR OF 43 CLUBS IN THE STATE OF ARIZONA, IS LAUNCHING A LARGE-SCALE REMODELING EFFORT OF 21 METROPOLITAN PHOENIX AND FIVE SOUTHERN ARIZONA LOCATIONS. With the remodeling effort, a cutting-edge, high-intensity interval training workout, HIIT by LAF, is launched in the second studio in the nation at 3301 E. Bell Road (33rd St and Bell Rd).

High-intensity interval training was recently endorsed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a highly beneficial form of exercise. Designed for every level of fitness and goal type, HIIT by LAF is a high-tech, high-energy workout led by certified fitness coaches. With each workout lasting 50 minutes, members take part in a variety of functional exercises, core training, cardio interval training and strength training.

Part of a national undertaking, the clubs’ refurbishment ranges from the modernization of equipment and specialized flooring to the introduction of a new color palette and refreshed studios and child-care areas. Wearing optional heart rate monitors, participants are led through five heart rate training zones, with each zone representing variations in levels of intensity that may result in participants burning up to 1,000 calories per workout including calories that may burn even after the workout ends (results may vary).

After analyzing several studies, HHS determined that HIIT “can effectively improve cardiorespiratory fitness (increase VO2 max) in adults with varied body weight and health status” and can also help with insulin levels, blood pressure, and body composition.

CREATING COMMUNITY AND RISING THE TIDE UP

As with any change, it is possible to experience some growing pains.

Since the beginning of the current revitalization efforts, we continue to encourage our community to rise the tide up by looking for the positive rather than the negative.

Certainly, as parking lots fill up, it is possible to experience frustration.

Frustration may beget animosity, which is one of the reasons we continue to encourage a positive outlook when engaging with each other and local businesses about parking. We still have plenty of parking for the new restaurants at 32nd St. and Shea, with

the parking behind the building at Paradise Hills. There is also ample parking near 32nd St. and Cactus.

This is also a very active community where biking and walking are encouraged as well. Most of the new businesses have installed bike racks. If they have not yet installed bike racks, we encourage you to ask them to install bike racks or maybe even install more if needed.

As our community has grown, we are lucky enough that we have created communities within our larger community. There are neighbors that gather for weekly get-togethers.

Unfortunately, we have also lost some favorite businesses as our community has grown. There are a variety of reasons that a business may close.

It is possible rent increases make the profitability of the business less feasible, other times businesses have sold and the new owners decided that the business is no longer viable, or a larger company may look at stores across the country and determine that certain stores are not performing as well.

In each case, it is a difficult decision to close the doors of a business and certainly can be frustrating for a community that values those businesses. It is also important to look ahead to find new businesses that will fit well within the fabric of the community. Rather focus on the businesses that we do not want in our area, if we focus on the businesses that we want to attract, the likelihood of attracting those businesses increases.

A few years ago, we set out a little notepad and asked our neighbors to write down what they would like to see in our community at one of the costume parties in the park. Some of the items that were written included: an ice cream shop, more restaurants within walking and biking distance, more coffee shops, and more local businesses. There were even more items on this wish list, but these are just a few that we have achieved as a community since the revitalization began.

Change is certain. We will continue to attract the businesses that we seek to fill vacancies in our strip malls by looking ahead to the types of businesses that we would like in our community. As a community, let’s continue to be kind to each other and rise the tide up as North 32nd continues to evolve to the next phase.

WHY ARE SOME WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

MORE SUCCESSFUL THAN OTHERS?

ccording to an American Express study, female entrepreneurship grew by 114 percent between 1997 and 2017. In 2017, there were over 11.6 million female owned firms in the US, employing nearly 9 million people and generating approximately $1.7 trillion in revenue. These are great statistics, yet womenowned businesses are still making significantly less than their male counterparts, with 88 percent generating less than $100,000 in annual revenues.

While some women’s businesses are struggling, others are soaring. Research has been done by many to uncover the reasons. Here are four key differences between the two types of women entrepreneurs.

MINDSET Many women who build six, seven and eight-figure businesses are very clear on their purpose and how it will impact their life. This purpose is so impactful, it becomes their driving force. Some successful women are driven by a situation that has personally affected them – an experience that shattered their confidence or scared them so deeply that their purpose becomes to never be in that situation again. From this came an understanding that to build a highly profitable business, they sometimes have to say “no” to opportunities that are not directly part of their plan.

This might not please everyone, but they understand that this is part of the price of success.

AUDACITY High-earning women do what it takes to achieve their goals. They realize that stepping out of their comfort zone is necessary to reach their goals.

They don’t see themselves as courageous, strong or fearless. Yet, their deep commitment to their purpose provides them with no alternative than to do things that they would otherwise avoid. north32ndnews.com

RESPECT FOR MONEY AND THEMSELVES High-earning women understand the importance of money and enjoy the freedom it provides them. Many women don’t see money as a sign of their accomplishments or as a boost to their ego, but instead as the gifts of their hard work. They ask to be paid their worth because they have self-respect and believe in the value they bring to others.

Everything they do has an underlying profit motive. They never work for free.

HAVE A SUPPORT SYSTEM High income earners know how arduous the road to success is. They know that there will be ups and downs; areas of certainty and parts unknown. Because of this, they have two groups of people who they can turn to. First, there are the people who they can ask for help – whether it is a mentor or a group of trusted peers. Successful women want to learn from the experiences of others. They realize what they don’t know can hurt them. They also have a group of encouragers. These are people who tell them they are great; who lift them up when they get knocked down.

These people provide successful women with the resiliency to keep going.

Ultimately, highly successful women have much in common with underearners. High-income earners are not born with these traits. Many have developed them through learning – experiential and instructional. The Great American Highway.

No matter what you call it, U.S. Route 66 is a valuable part of American history and we are lucky to have ready access to some of the best spots to see along the historic highway right here in Arizona. These are some highlights of our favorite places to visit along the Mother Road in Arizona.

SELIGMAN West of Flagstaff and East of Kingman, there are many opportunities to take the less traveled Route 66 highway that runs parallel to I-40. A few tiny towns dot the route, including Seligman, a quaint little town with antique stores, restaurants and refurbished motor inns - a true Route 66 delight! Be prepared for a rustic, small town experience in the socalled “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” In 1987, Seligman residents convinced the State of Arizona to dedicate Route 66 as a historic highway, opening the way to tourism and development for the small Arizona town that some believe is the inspiration for the Disney movie “Cars.”

PEACH SPRINGS A little west of Seligman, you’ll find Peach Springs, a historic town on the Hualapai Reservation. The town is

By Jill Frier the headquarters of the Hualapai tribe and the starting point for the road that takes visitors to Havasu Falls at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Havasu Falls is a beautiful destination located on Havasupai tribal lands, but keep in mind that you must make reservations in advance with the tribe to camp at the bottom of the canyon.

Don’t try to hike down and camp without calling ahead – the rangers will send you right back up at the end of the day (and boy is that a long, grueling hike)!

WILLIAMS, ARIZONA About 20 miles west of Flagstaff is a small town called Williams. Williams is a true Route 66 destination, considered the Gateway to the Grand Canyon and home of the Grand Canyon Railway. The town is nestled in the trees and mountains of Northern Arizona and is a favorite of both Arizonans and out of state travelers.

Stop for a bite to eat, or plan ahead to stay awhile and ride the train to see the Grand Canyon National Park.

And don’t forget to check out Bearizona, a real Northern Arizona zoological treasure and world class treat for animal and nature lovers!

WALNUT CANYON Just a bit off the road east of Flagstaff is a wonder of nature and history

that you simply must see. Walnut Canyon National Monument is a short hike down a steep cliff, allowing visitors to walk through ancient cliff dwellings with stunning views.

It’s a relatively quick trip through the dwellings, but be sure to bring your walking (or better yet hiking) shoes if you decide to take the trail down. It’s a steep climb, but worth every step.

WUPATKI North of Flagstaff, on the road to the east entrance to the Grand Canyon, is the Wupatki National Monument. In the middle of the desert, with views of the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, you will find dozens (perhaps hundreds) of ancient Pueblo settlements dotting the landscape. It’s a fascinating picture of native life before the Sunset Crater volcano erupted and western settlers arrived.

METEOR CRATER When you see the signs for Meteor Crater, take the time to visit – it’s worth the trip! Giant billboards usually over promise and under deliver, but the billboard for meteor crater just can’t come close to describing the real thing. The Meteor Crater is an incredible sight - like something out of this world and nothing you’ve ever seen. You simply must stop and see this national landmark.

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITES The most noted towns on the old Route 66 in Arizona include Holbrook, Winslow, Flagstaff, and Kingman, all great places to stop on your trip. The National Park Service also provides a list of notable and historic sites along the highway, including: • Querino Canyon Bridge, Houck • Painted Desert Inn, Petrified Forest National Park • Wigwam Village Motel #6, Holbrook • La Posada Historic District, Winslow • Walnut Canyon Bridge, Winona • Railroad Addition Historic District and Boundary Increase, Flagstaff • Seligman Historic District, Seligman • Peach Springs Trading Post, Peach Springs • Schoolhouse at Truxton Canyon Trading School, Valentine • Kingman Commercial Historic District, Kingman • Durlin Hotel, Oatman • Old Trails Bridge, Topock These are all fascinating historic destinations, so do your research and plan ahead to make the most of your journey down the Great American Highway. NURTURE YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPING MINDSET

W

hat if the way to your child’s success in school is found in the way he or she thinks about intelligence and the ability to persist with challenging tasks?

Stanford University professor Carol Dweck has studied the learning patterns of children for over 30 years.

She’s found that there are similarities between kids who are open-minded and persistent in the face of academic challenges, and those who share a perspective of one’s intelligence as innate and, for the most part, unchangeable. The open-minded and persistent student believes he or she has the potential to improve, while the narrow-minded student holds tightly to the belief that intelligence is something one is born with and therefore an established attribute for self and others to judge.

Within each of us is an internal mental world where our thoughts and feelings reside. Each of us has a unique way of thinking about and framing the world around us—what most of us think of as a mindset. Our mindset consists of thoughts, feelings, perceptions, memories, beliefs, and attitudes.

Further, it is our unique mindset that sets forth our way of thinking about learning.

Every child experiences the classroom differently, but when it comes to learning, scientific studies support the idea of a fixed or growth mindset as the regulator of one’s behavior. A child with a growth mindset believes that his or her intelligence, skills, and abilities are strengthened through deliberate practice and effort and are continually under development throughout life.

On the other hand, a child with a fixed mindset sees his or her intelligence and abilities as unchangeable.

As children grow, they do so physically,

intellectually, emotionally, socially; let’s call these modalities. Here are some nurturing nuggets for shaping the modalities of a growth mindset in your child.

PHYSICAL NURTURING NUGGETS: Practice, practice, practice. How do you nurture improvement of performance? You have to apply yourself to the task, becoming a little better every day.

INTELLECTUAL NURTURING NUGGETS: For every problem, there is a solution. The child with the growth mindset sees mistakes as opportunities to learn, instead of as personal failures.

Help your child learn to engage with the world of ideas and teach them to set learning goals and to strive to work through difficulties.

EMOTIONAL NURTURING NUGGETS: When you get upset, reset. Teach your child how to

change their frame of mind when they make a mistake. The child with a growth mindset is not derailed by difficulty. Rather, setbacks are seen as opportunities to find something worth learning.

SOCIAL NURTURING NUGGETS: Speak up and listen. Developing one’s voice should be balanced with the willingness and ability to listen. Reinforce growth by praising your child’s efforts, strategies, and improvements, not by praising talent.

Being aware of the fixed and growth mindsets should help you and your child slow down and explore teachable moments.

And just as with everything in life, it all starts with a parent or caregiver modeling the right mindset and instilling values necessary for constant and never-ending improvement of one’s abilities.

WHAT EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT KIDS AND SCREEN TIME

A

ccording to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in 1970 children didn’t start regularly watching TV until they were four years old. Today, they report that children begin interacting with digital media at four months old. One look around and it’s easy to see that many children have their own cell phone, tablet, television, or other type of screen that is occupying a lot of their time and attention. The problem with this is with all that screen time, there are numerous ways that research shows it may be harming kids. From the smallest of toddlers who are glued to watching tablets and televisions, to teens who are using their devices almost constantly, it’s prompted concerns that every parent should be aware of.

“There is no denying that technology plays a major role in our lives today, but when it comes to our

children, we need to be aware of the challenges it can cause,” explains Reena B. Patel, a parenting expert, licensed educational psychologist, and author. “Children’s cognition skills are still developing, so it’s imperative that we take that into account when it comes to their screen usage time.”

In the same report, the AAP reports that 75 percent of children ages 0-8 have access to a mobile device, and that most one and two-year-olds are using a mobile device on a daily basis. This trend continues through every age group. The average 8-10-year-old is spending around eight hours per day on various forms of media, and older children are spending more than 11 hours per day.

A Pew Research Center report shows that 24 percent of teens go online “almost constantly,” and 92 percent of them report using their mobile devices on a daily basis.

Most parents realize that children also engage in learning activities and even have homework assignments they need to use screens for. They are a part of life and a part of their learning experience, as well as their entertainment one. Rather than sheltering kids from social media and screens, parents should strive for teaching them healthier ways to use them, and how to maintain a balance. With screens here to stay, it’s important that parents take steps to help keep their child’s time spent on them in check. Here are some tips to do just that: • It’s recommended that children under the age of two not be exposed to screen time at all. For children over the age of two, it’s recommended that the screen time be kept to one to two hours per day at the most.

• Discuss the screen time challenges with your children, especially when they are adolescents and teens, so they understand the concerns. Ask your child what the pros and cons of unlimited or excessive use of devices are. Devise a plan for using screens, which limits the amount of time they can be used each day. When children are involved with developing the plan, they are more likely to follow the rules they helped create.

• Encourage kids to create a balance between screen time and non-screen time. It’s important that kids of all

ages engage in physical and social activities that do not involve the usage of screens. Encourage them to have real-life relationships, rather than their friendships being all online or done through electronics.

• Create rules that will help give them boundaries about when they can use their devices. For example, no devices at meals, and no phones allowed in their bedrooms overnight.

• Find non-screen activities that the whole family can engage in. This will help them create bonds and learn healthy social behaviors.

• Be the example that you want them to follow. From young children to teens, they are watching what parents do when it comes to screen time.

Parents who overuse screen time are setting that same example for their children. Having healthy screen habits will teach children to do the same.

• Parents should be familiar with all the apps and devices their children use. They should have access to the social media apps as well.

Ex: Instagram can be created and monitored from a parents account and note on social media pages that it is “parent monitored.” Also, become familiar with Internet safety, including setting parental controls, and how to avoid giving too much personal information online. north32ndnews.com

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT SUMMER CAMP FOR YOUR KID

he summer months are coming soon and parents all over the Valley are scrambling to find ideas for ways to keep their kids busy or provide weekly childcare while they are out of school. One solution many parents take advantage of is summer camp. Here are some tips for finding the right summer camp for your kids this year.

WHY SUMMER CAMP IS IMPORTANT Camp is a place where kids are allowed to safely roam and play in a way the often aren’t in their own neighborhoods these days. Whether they are at day camp all summer, specialty camp for a week or two, or overnight camp, kids get to let loose and have fun with other kids outside of a school or home environment. Not only are summer camps a great way for your kids to have fun, get exercise and stay active during the months they are out of school, they also teach important life lessons such as how to make new friends and gain independence.

Here are a few of the types of camps to consider for your child this summer: • Academic • Sports • Overnight • Outdoors • Science • Arts and music • Animals and zoos • Childcare for working parents • Just for Fun and Social Interaction

HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT CAMP There are tons of options, both in-state and out, for parents and kids to choose from when deciding which type of camp to pick. You can choose anything from traditional overnight camp with lakeside cabins in the woods, to science camp where kids go daily to conduct experiments and learn about different scientific and STEM-related topics, to soccer, gymnastics, karate or basketball. Some things to consider when deciding on the right camp include the following: Know Your Goal: Do you need full-day care for your child every day, or do you just want to get them out of the house for a while to have fun with other kids? Do you want them to get plenty of exercise? Learn a new skill? Grow academically? Improve their musical or artistic abilities? Pick a camp that meets the goals you have for your child.

Know Your Child’s Interests: Discuss the different types of camps available with your child and see what things interest them. Understand the age range suggested by the camp and any skill sets they may be required to have. You can broaden their horizons by letting them try new things, but be aware of their limitations and the things they don’t like. For example, if your kid hates team sports, soccer camp may not be a great idea.

f you build it, they will come.”

This oft quoted line from the 1989 hit movie “Field of Dreams” perhaps reflects the journey of two good friends and businessmen.

After together growing one restaurant concept, they were ready to take it to the next level with a new second location, calling it their “flagship” and in the North 32nd Street neighborhood.

The story of Nic Ferrantello and Tom Piccione, co-owners of TapHouse Kitchen, located at 3131 E. Shea, goes back 30 years. Piccione is a general contractor who has been building custom homes in Phoenix since 1982; Ferrantello a plastering subcontractor who has been at his trade in the Valley since 1978.

In 1982, Ferrantello’s father and Piccione were introduced and Ferrantello’s dad began plastering Piccone’s custom homes. The younger Ferrantello joined his father’s business in 1986, and he and Piccione have collaborated on projects ever since.

While the construction profession brought them together, an abiding respect and shared interests have kept them together.

“We’re accustomed to working with each other and, as a result, we’ve developed a close friendship,” said Ferrantello. “We have the same mind and the same likes. We both like cars, pleasing people and doing the right thing. We’re also both particular and detailed oriented; we’re a great team.

Tom is like the big brother I never had.”

Consequently, like any brothers who tease each other, Ferrantello is fond of describing himself as the brains of the operation while Piccione, the quieter of the two, is the brawn.

Life is said to offer no coincidences.

Ferrantello was born in Brooklyn; Piccione was born in Queens. Despite hailing from neighboring boroughs, their 14-year age difference basically thwarted any earlier meetings. None-

theless, they love their shared New York City roots. Perhaps being born in one of the world’s preeminent food capitals predestined their success in the Phoenix restaurant market.

On St. Patrick’s Day of 2014, the original TapHouse Kitchen opened its doors in Scottsdale. The familyowned business was such a sweet success that in five short years, they opened the new Shea location. The story goes that Ferrantello and Piccione entered the restaurant business as investors in the first TapHouse Kitchen in Scottsdale.

“We quickly learned that we needed to do and be more than mere investors,” said Ferrantello. “We needed to be owner/operators. Ultimately we bought out the other entity and haven’t looked back.”

As they immersed themselves into running TapHouse Kitchen Scottsdale, two years later, Piccione broached the subject of expansion.

“For about six months,” said Ferrantello, “Piccione would always chime in: ‘There’s a piece of property available, and we should really have our second location there. It’s going to be a great location and the area needs it since there’s nothing around.’”

Ever cautious, Ferrantello kept bursting Piccione’s bubble and said they needed to wait before taking that significant step. Finally, the dialogue changed; Ferrantello was ready to see the property. Once a former restaurant, the space appeared then rundown and abandoned. And Piccione was right when he said the neighborhood could use more dining options.

The southwest corner of Shea Boulevard and North 32nd Street, not far where Piccione raised his family and continues to reside, became the second TapHouse Kitchen. It also became a personal mission to bring a great neighborhood restaurant to a great neighborhood.

COVER STORY “We purchased the land,” said Ferrantello, “and we acted as our own general contractors. We put a lot of sweat equity into this location and when I say sweat, I really mean it -literally and not just verbally. Everything about the architectural design as well as the interior design of the restaurant was our idea.”

The new spot boasts interior and exterior features which were built from the ground up. The custom, 7,000-foot interior is a contemporary, industrial design mixed with warm elements such as reclaimed barnwood, comfortable furnishings and an indoor/outdoor patio with a fireplace and views of Piestewa Peak.

Delicious food in a fun and relaxing atmosphere remains the goal. Ferrantello and Piccione work side by side with Jamie and the kitchen crew as they strive for culinary perfection. The focus is to ensure both locations operate at the highest standard, and the mission is to deliver diners a memorable experience. That’s how a winning restaurant is built. The ‘quality first’ approach is key to TapHouse Kitchen’s prosperity.

The patio seamlessly transforms into a private dining room, accommodating up to 40 guests, possibly more, for birthday parties, receptions, even school functions.

Upholstered horseshoe booths and banquettes, as well as a beautiful, expansive bar with striking Brazilian caramel and black granite adds to the carefully selected custom touches throughout. A lively chef’s kitchen offers guests wide-open views of the culinary activity underway and is colorfully flanked by an authentic, red-tiled pizza forno.

Beer connoisseurs will gravitate to TapHouse Kitchen’s collection of 40 craft beers on tap, mostly from local breweries. By contrast, TapHouse Kitchen Scottsdale features 20 craft beers on tap, plus three bourbons and five wines on tap.

“We’ve expanded the craft beer market, which is huge,” said Ferrantello.

“While the majority of our beers are local, we have some from California and Colorado.”

In addition to serving lunch, dinner and “hoppy” hour, the new TapHouse Kitchen location plans to introduce Saturday and Sunday brunch beginning March 2. It’s a family owned and operated small business, with Piccione’s daughter, Jamie, serving as General Manager at the new locale.

What elevates TapHouse Kitchen is the caliber of food. Cooking with fresh ingredients on-site every day means sourcing as many products locally as possible. Among perennial favorites are the Beef Short Rib, TapHouse Signature Burger, Chicken Parmesan and “Fish Fry Everyday Baby!!”

Both locations serve what Nic refers to as Modern American Cuisine. However, Shea adds authentic pizza as well. “We have a giant traditional pizza oven at our new flagship location,” said Ferrantello. “From the get-go, we wanted the pizza oven, and our pies are divine.”

Ferrantello is of Sicilian descent, so diners are in for a delectable treat as they sample the yummiest pizza this side of the Atlantic from Sicily and Italy.

TapHouse Kitchen’s goal is to be the favorite neighborhood restaurant; a place to relax and have a good time while savoring high quality food and exploring craft beers.

here is no doubt that moving can be stressful. Here are a few tips to make it a little more bearable…

Packing: It is important to create one box that has key items to get you through the first couple of days at your new home with things like toilet paper, paper towels, utensils (maybe plastic), plates (maybe paper), trash bags, dish soap, sponge, rags, all-purpose cleaner, and probably a few other key items for your family.

Unpacking: Set realistic goals for unpacking. Can you only handle three boxes a day? Great…do what you can.

Remember – it didn’t all get packed in one day either! By setting an attainable goal, you will feel less stressed.

Movers: While it is certainly possible to make moves without movers, it sure is easier with assistance. While movers may offer to give you a quote by looking at photos online, it is best to have them give an in-person estimate to ensure it is accurate. Your mover trying to double the price of your job mid-move is not ideal and an in-person bid will help prevent this.

Space: In your new home, it is a good idea to start creating spaces without boxes early. Two of the easiest rooms to make this happen are the bedroom(s) and living room. Just as it is important to not try to tackle all of the unpacking in one day, it will be nearly impossible to rid all of the rooms of boxes quickly.

By focusing on a few key rooms in your home, you will create spaces that are relaxing reprieves from the task of dealing with unpacking boxes. Being able to go in your bedroom, close the door, and

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… I start off my day with a power shake, avocado toast and my own homemade cold brew before setting off. you. You must build efficient systems so that the company can continue to provide a consistent product/service to every client, every time, regardless of whether you are there to oversee things or not (otherwise, no time off for you…)

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… Humor (or humour for my Canadian folk…) I could have never made it this far in life or business without ample amounts of humor coming in and going out (regardless if other people think I’m humorous…)

Anyway, I’ll never forget, because one day a customer drove away before his car was finished fueling and tore the gas pump right out of the ground… then it burst into flames. I was fired!

MY LIFE… Has been full of wonderful experiences and challenges alike, and I am grateful for all of them. I currently enjoy the small things (or so I tell myself) like a good cold brew coffee, time with family and friends, etc. I find myself being much more of selective what takes my time, attention and taste buds.

urchasing jewelry can be a scary experience for many people.

Understanding the difference between “mass produced” pieces and custom designs is important. When you are ready to move from the assembly line jewelry to a piece of art passed down through the generations, there are some important steps to understand.

First, shop around and find a professional jeweler who you not only trust, but you feel the pieces he or she has created in the past fit your personality. Remember, this jeweler is an artist and his or her style should be a fit for what you are envisioning.

Once you have found your jeweler, take the time to discuss your ideas and make sure he/she can turn your idea into a reality. If you are stuck on where to start, most will have samples, books and other materials to help get you going. From there, your jeweler will sketch or create a design on a computer. Once these decisions are clear, it is time for the next step…bringing your design to life. For hundreds of years, bench masters have been carving jewelry from wax not only for casting purposes, but to show you a rough form of what your end piece will look like. In today’s high-tech age, many jewelers prepare CAD designs (Computer Assisted Design) that allow you to see a virtual 3D picture of your piece prior to sending it to a computer assisted casting. Now is the time to ask for any feasible minor changes.

From here, a Casting Professional pours molten metals to replace the wax, creating the rough product. Your future heirloom is now in the finishing stages where diamonds or gems (depending on your design) are set and the piece is polished to perfection.

A new addition to purchasing any jewelry is the addition of Synthetic Diamonds. Possessing the same physical and chemical properties of natural diamonds, it is easy to mistake them for natural diamonds.

There are currently two types of synthetic diamonds HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition).

In HPHT, high pressure is generated inside a machine causing powder made from real, natural diamonds to dissolve and crystallize inside a capsule forming a new synthetic diamond crystal. CVD is where manufacturers break down molecules of carbon containing the gas with the resulting carbon atoms turning into crystals over several weeks.

Both processes are able to create bigger diamonds with a savings of 30-40% to the end consumer.

While very similar in make up to a natural diamond and typically indistinguishable to the naked eye, there are differences. Highly sophisticated equipment which many GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified jewelers possess can help detect these differences.

Larger size diamonds (e.g. 1/2 carat or larger) typically have laser inscriptions on the girdle to identify them as synthetic from a manufacturer. Jewelers who carry synthetic diamonds have ethical and legal responsibilities to inform their customers.

KARSTEN’S ACE PRESENTS WEED AND GRASS KILLERS

A

frequently asked question at Karsten’s Ace is “How do I control the weeds and grasses in my yard?“ Here are a few tips to help you select the proper herbicide and get the best results when managing those pesky weeds in your desert landscaping.

Herbicides can be selective or nonselective. A selective herbicide is designed to kill specific types of plants, usually grasses and broad leaf weeds.

Conversely, non-selective herbicides kill most all plants they come in contact with. When using non-selective herbicides, be careful not to allow contact with plants you want to keep.

Additionally, when looking at products for weed control, be aware that there are two types of products available: pre-emergent herbicides and post-emergent herbicides, both of which can be a selective or nonselective herbicide. Understanding the differences between the two will make

a huge difference in how effective you are in killing and controlling your weed problem.

A pre-emergent herbicide creates a protective barrier around the plant seed which prevents the seed from germinating. Pre-emergents are used early in the growing season and best applied in temperatures below 60 degrees. It is also important to note that these products will prevent germination of all seeds, not just weeds.

So, don’t use these products in flower beds or gardens where you will be planting seeds.

The second type of weed control is a post-emergent herbicide. This type of weed killer is used at the beginning of the growing season on weeds that have already begun growing. Once a weed has started growing it is too late to utilize the pre-emergent, so move directly to a post-emergent.

Post-emergent herbicides work by penetrating the plant leaves, stalk and root system. A post-emergent should be applied directly to the weed. If pos-

sible, it is best to apply the spray after the base of the plant or weed has been cut away. This way, the weed structure will be open which will allow the herbicide to more quickly penetrate the weed’s root system. Post-emergents will be used several times during the growing season. Unlike pre-emergents, this product likes temperatures above 60 degrees. You will be able to see the results of your work in one to two weeks, although some wilting of the leaves may happen much sooner.

As a natural alternative, there is another product available in retail packaging. The brand “Pulverize” is a fast-acting herbicidal soap that eliminates unwanted vegetation, quickly.

This product contains no glyphosate and can be used to control your weeds and grasses. It is sprayed directly on the weed. Pulverize is available in a premixed spray for your convenience.

Midwest Food Bank had its start in 2003 when three farmer brothers heard that food pantries in Illinois were having trouble keeping enough food on the shelves. The brothers felt that was something that they could help with, so they opened the Midwest Food Bank in a utility shed on their farm. In 2005, the brothers took their pledge to help abroad and were there for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. What started out as one semi-load of food, almost everything MFB had on hand, ended up being 167 loads by the end of the recovery efforts. It was then that disaster recovery was added to the Midwest Food Bank mission. Most recently the MFB Arizona division sent semi-loads of supplies to the victims of the California wildfires.

Midwest Food Bank is a distribution level food bank.

That means it is designed to receive large quantities of food and bulk packaged food that smaller food pantries would have to decline. Executive Director, Patrick Hodgkins, says, “We have an army of volunteers that transport, package, label, and reconfigure food so we are able to give it to our local partners and get it to the ones that need it.” Anything MFB receives is donated to their partners free of charge. All MFB partners are required to commit to never sell, barter, or trade the food they receive from MFB. According to Q. Nielsen, Operations Manager, “Even when we have to buy food to meet the need, we will not charge for it. That is just not our way.”

Because of their donation model, MFB is always looking for partners to support their efforts with donations of food or finances. MFB is a top-rated charity with Charity Navigators having received 4 stars for 7 consecutive years. While all donations are appreciated, Midwest Food Bank is focused currently on the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. This credit allows Arizonians to donate to MFB and receive a dollarfor-dollar tax credit. Hodgkins also tells us that a

A group of art traders and exhibitors face the consequences of greed when a collection of art pieces is found to be cursed.

Dan Gilroy took what is essentially a slasher film under the cover of a high brow horror that’s about killer art. If that’s not enough to convince you, it’s got smart social commentary on the backstabbing and fake nature of those who will do anything to get what they need. There are great performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Collette, John Malkovich, and more. And there are fantastic kills too.

GLASS

The worlds of Unbreakable and Split collide when the three leads are contained in a psychiatric hospital.

Glass is M. Night Shyamalan’s masterpiece.

This is a movie about gaslighting, trickery & those who will do anything to keep “natural values.” Instead of helping those in need or at a disadvantage, they push them down, and present those in need as villains when they have nowhere else to go. It doesn’t absolve the sins of the ones in need, but it makes you empathize even with the villain characters.

The combination of the characters from the preceding two films feels natural, and the main three (Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Samuel L. Jackson) are incredible. As if the cast couldn’t get any better, they are joined by Sarah Paulson. The atmosphere of isolation and loneliness is captured perfectly by Shyamalan and DoP Mike Gioulakis. The score by West Dylan Thordson is amazing, and literally adds a ticking clock feeling to the film.

ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

rebuilt and becomes a bounty hunter in the metropolis of Iron City.

Alita is clearly the passion project of producer and co-writer James Cameron. While he didn’t direct it, his influence is felt throughout it, to the point that actual director Robert Rodriguez’s style is lost save for a few select moments, his chaotic and anarchic glee gone.

However, he does a great job transitioning into big budget filmmaking, especially in regard to action, where the editing and camerawork compliments it. As far as the cast goes, Rosa Salazar is fantastic as the title character. We watch her go from a wide-eyed, child-like performance to a genuinely badass fighter. The characters in the supporting cast aren’t as developed, but the cast is just so good that it makes up for it. Plot wise, it is a generic origin story and doesn’t do much different, but it’s the production design and VFX that almost makes up for it and immerses you into the world. The cyborgs in particular are impressive with how the human parts so naturally fit with the inhuman ones.

THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART

Five years after the events of The Lego Movie, Emmet must save what’s left of Bricksburg and his friends when an alien species invades.

A sequel that definitely tries to be greater than the original, it does sometimes feel overstuffed in trying to be a musical, continuing Emmet and Lucy’s stories and its own themes.

But there are just so many good aspects here.

The songs are fresh and exciting, and the musical angle feels right within the Lego universe. It also addresses the misconceptions of “Everything Is Awesome” in a clever way. Lastly, it manages to tackle themes of insecurity, feelings of being unloved and how age differences can affect the relationships between siblings. All of this in a funny, all ages friendly adventure with charming animation.

VERTIGO SALON ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS Q. After so many years of success in South Florida, why did you move to Phoenix and open a salon in the 32nd Street neighborhood?

A. My family ultimately brought me to AZ. I have three siblings in the Valley and my recently widowed mother. I also wanted a new challenge in an area that was thriving and growing. I have owned a home in the 32nd Street area since 2005 and the timing all fell into place to make the move. The opportunity to be a part of this awesome area and its growth is exciting.

Q. I am hoping to grow my hair out.

How often should I have it trimmed?

A. Many things factor into the timing of trimming your hair while growing it out. If you start out with healthy trimmed ends you shouldn’t trim very often. Every three to six months is plenty to help maintain its shape. If you keep cutting, it won’t get longer.

Chemically compromised hair may need more attention but again, cutting the ends does not encourage growth.

You are paying for what you leave with on your head, not what is on the floor. Patience is key.

Q. Are sulfate-free shampoos really better for your hair and scalp?

A. Sulfate-free is definitely a marketing trend right now. Sulfate-free shampoos are gentler, and important to use if you have a keratin treatment in your hair and if you shampoo daily.

They are also recommended if you experience dry or sensitive scalp.

Keep in mind you will not experience as much lather and will need to scrub a bit more to really get your hair and scalp clean. The sulfates in products help produce the thick rich lather that many of us are used to. There are many shampoos with sulfates that are still great!

Q. With all of the fashion hair colors that are popular right now, how can I keep my hair social media ready and maintain the vibrancy?

A. Aside from having a stylist work on your hair every day, plan on setting aside extra time each morning. High maintenance hair color is high maintenance every day. Although you will not want to shampoo as often, there are products available now that directly deposit color when shampooing and conditioning at home. These, along with heat protectant and shine serums, can make a huge difference in extending the color and helping keep a healthy appearance. Having the right tools and products at home will definitely simplify your routine. Always ask lots of questions when you get new color and/or style.

VIOLINS OF HOPE: EXHIBITION COMES TO ARIZONA

n 1933, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany, immediately founding his first concentration camp in Dachau.

In 1935, he issued the Nuremberg Laws, excluding Jewish people from public life across Germany.

By 1945, more than six million Jewish people were murdered across Europe during the Holocaust.

“We believe that in keeping the memory and lessons of the Holocaust alive, we prevent silence and indifference in future generations,” says Marty Haberer, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix.

In an effort to give a voice to those lost during those darkest of days in our history, the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix and other community partners, thanks to the diligent work by local volunteers Julee Landau Shahon and Rachel Hoffer, and in partnership with more than 50 Arizona nonprofits, schools and businesses, is proud to present Violins of Hope.

VIOLINS OF HOPE Violins of Hope tells the remarkable stories of violins played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust.

Today these instruments serve not only as powerful reminders of an unimaginable experience but also reinforce lessons of tolerance, inclusion, and diversity.

The violins were first discovered by Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein, who as a young violinmaker more than 50 years ago was asked to restore a particular violin.

VIOLINS OF HOPE PHOENIX Throughout March, Phoenix and Scottsdale will play host to dozens of Violins of Hope Phoenix events.

“This incredible program will be the largest collaborative project ever undertaken in greater-Phoenix, with Jewish and non-Jewish community organizations partnering in celebrating music, education, history and culture. It is a tremendous opportunity for the Federation to connect with community members and organizations and demonstrate unity in our shared values,” says Landau Shahon.

There are free, ticketed and even school events all month long, including: NOW THROUGH MARCH 24: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will feature a Violins of Hope Exhibition. Monday-Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm, Sunday, noon-5. Docent-led tours (free).

NOW THROUGH MARCH 26: The Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center will feature a free photography exhibit by renowned artist and photographer Daniel Levin called “Amnon Weinstein, The Man behind the Music” MARCH 19: Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will host a Violins of Hope Tribute Concert featuring the Red Rocks Music String Orchestra honoring Holocaust survivors and those who perished, with special guest Avshi Weinstein and emcee Lin Sue Cooney, at 7:30 p.m. (ticketed event).

The customer shared with Weinstein – who himself lost hundreds of relatives during the Holocaust – that the violin was played by a musician at Auschwitz as he marched to the gas chamber. The musician was spared by the Nazis and forced to play at the camp afterwards.

MARCH 23 AND 24: The Arizona Science Center Planetarium will host Chinese-American violinist Xiang (Sean) Gao as he gives an exclusive preview of a multi-media production based on stories of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees during the Holocaust.

Weinstein, who discovered what appeared to be ashes when he opened the violin case, was unable to restore that instrument. The memory was too painful at the time. But in 1996, by then a master violin-maker, Weinstein put out a worldwide call for violins from the Holocaust.

MARCH 24: The Arizona Opera will perform selections from Brundibar, a children’s opera originally performed by the children of Theresienstadt. Then, the Phoenix Boys Choir will perform I Never Saw Another Butterfly, with a Violins of Hope finale. I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on poems written by Jewish children imprisoned in Theresienstadt. It serves as both a dramatic reminder of the Holocaust as well as a remembrance for these children, most of whose lives were extinguished soon after their poetry was written.

He sought out to restore every single one he could find as a way to reclaim his lost heritage and to give a voice to the victims.
