New Coffee Shop Alert! Paradox Brew Opens Its Doors “COME IN FOR A CUP, LEAVE WITH A SMILE,” IS THE MOTTO OF PARADOX BREW, A NEW LOCAL COFFEE SHOP THAT JUST OPENED AT 3215 E. THUNDERBIRD ROAD. “At Paradox Brew, we offer coffee made out of a roasted bean that has been in the family since 2004,” says owner Paul Schmitz. “We also have a variety of loose-leaf teas available. We sell teas and beans as well as drinks that will amaze and satisfy your every craving. In the mood for something caffeine-free? Try one of our steamers, herbal teas or an Italian soda.” Schmitz says that he hopes the ambiance and environment of the new coffee shop will be what keeps customers coming back. “Paradox Brew offers a warm and friendly environment where everyone is invited to stay a while and enjoy a smile,” he adds.

While they’ve been open less than a month, the response from locals who have stopped by has been positive. “Paradox Brew is a nice local coffee shop with great coffees and a super friendly owner,” says John O., a recent customer. On Facebook, customers seem to love the chai tea as well. Schmitz says that an official website is in the works, but for the moment, North 32nd residents can find Paradox Brew on Facebook @paradoxbrewaz and on Instagram @paradoxbrew. The shop can also be reached via e-mail at paradoxbrewaz@gmail.com. “Find us on social media and help us spread the word that we’re here,” says Schmitz. “We are excited to be part of the local community. This is a dream years in the making.”

City News The Arizona Tennis Association Moves to North 32nd By Emma Wolff THE 1980S WERE A TIME OF LEGWARMERS, BIG HAIR, ROCK-AND-ROLL, AND TENNIS? Yes, tennis! Shelley Chambers and her identical twin sister, Sherri, played in the Arizona High School Tennis Championships in 1982 while attending Shadow Mountain High School. Almost 40 years later, Shelley is now a head tennis coach with the Arizona Tennis Association (ATA). Shelley’s love of the game is being passed on to all the students she teaches. “I never expected to go back to tennis after all these years,” Shelley says. “I went to school and earned a business degree, but here I am, still on the courts! During the last 21 years coaching with the ATA, I’ve been able to share my passion with students and give them the wonderful experience I had with tennis.” The ATA is a nonprofit organization that has something for all ages. Whether you are 4 or 74, you can take lessons, join a tennis league and have some fun. After many years, the organization is moving to a brand-new location, perfect for the residents of the North Valley. Starting this month, the ATA will be playing on the beautiful, spacious courts of Shea Middle School, located at 2728 E Shea Boulevard.

“The ATA was founded in 1987 by four local tennis professionals and has been serving the Arizona community for over three decades. These pros had a desire to give Valley residents an option for high quality tennis lessons at an affordable cost,” says Gail Breece, ATA office manager.

For the next six weeks, Shelley and longtime ATA tennis coach Dave Thies will be conducting beginner lessons for several ages on Mondays and Wednesdays at Shea Middle School. On Tuesday and Thursdays, there will be lessons for more advanced students playing at the junior varsity and varsity levels. In addition to tennis lessons for younger students, the ATA also has adult leagues and lessons. During COVID-19, ATA is taking safety precautions including social distancing and hand sanitizing. There is a limit of 12 students per class and six students per court in order to maintain social distance. VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFTEN FIND THEMSELVES STRUGGLING TO LEAVE BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO SURVIVE OUTSIDE OF THE RELATIONSHIP. VALLEY NONPROFIT CONTROL ALT DELETE, LLC IS WORKING TO MAKE SURE THAT VICTIMS CAN SAFELY FIND A WAY OUT. “Control Alt Delete helps people escape domestic violence by removing the barriers that keep them in unsafe situations,” says its president and founder Laura Pahules. “Ninety nine percent of all abuse survivors are financially abused and may be ready to leave but do not have the funds for something as little as gas for their car.” In 2019, Arizona domestic violence programs served 1,539 people in a single day and there were 96 domestic violence related deaths throughout the year according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Control Alt Delete was founded the same year, and since then, they have facilitated more than 1,800 escapes from domestic violence situations, which have included more than 3,800 children and 1,200 pets. “What we know about domestic violence survivors is that they will have a higher likelihood of not returning to the abuser if they have a support system,” Pahules says. “Many of the escapes we help with have friends or family that can help but the survivor has no way to get to them; Control Alt Delete bridges that gap by providing fuel and transportation.” Not only does the organization provide financial support for fuel, but every inperson escape receives a basic immediate needs bin filled with hygiene and other essential items to help survivors through their escape and transition away from the relationship with dignity. For survivors who remain in the home after the abuser has been arrested, Control Alt Delete can assist in changing door locks, installing window locks and even installing security camera systems.

Pahules says that financial support and donation drives are both great ways to get involved with Control Alt Delete. The organization is a qualifying organization under the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit and donations make the home security program and basic immediate need bins possible. “The average cost of a Control Alt Delete escape is $12.28 per person,” she says. “$12.28 to save a life.” Control Alt Delete is a volunteer-run organization with no overhead cost and no state or federal funding. According to Pahules, 100 percent of every donation made to the organization goes directly toward helping people escape domestic violence. She adds that the easiest way to support the organization and help with domestic violence awareness is to like, follow and share posts across social media platforms. “Prior to the pandemic, the national statistics showed that one in four women and one in nine men were in abusive relationships,” Pahules shares. “I believe those numbers may have changed to even more people currently being abused. Domestic violence in rampant and widespread, with no socioeconomic distinction.” Pahules offers one final thought to those in a domestic violence environment, or those who know someone in a domestic violence environment: “You are not alone,” she says. “I believe you. City News Travel Tips from ADOT: Staying Safe in North 32nd and Beyond By Ethan Kispert IN THE CITY OF PHOENIX, AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENTS ARE ONE OF THE LEADING CAUSES OF DEATH. According to an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) crash report, car accidents accounted for a staggering 586 total fatalities and 46,858 total injuries in urban areas. This number accounts for over 50% of the total fatalities for the state of Arizona in 2019. These numbers also represent a slight increase from the ADOT’s 2018 numbers of 562 total fatalities and 43,513 injuries. “We’ve had two horrific accidents recently near 32nd and Cactus,” says Allison Barnett, an ambassador for North 32nd. “There were two fatalities and severe injuries in one and severe injuries in the other.” According to the City of Phoenix, the following are the “Five P’s” or basic principles for effective driving:

• Perception: Perceive the complete picture of what is ahead by rotating your eyes 180 degrees, looking to the horizon and scanning from side to side. • Planning: Go through various driving situations in your mind and think through “escape route” options to prepare yourself before unexpected hazards. • Prevention: Practice defensive driving and be ready to prevent a crash by adjusting to the other person’s mistakes. Give yourself time to react so that you can remove yourself from another driver’s distraction. • Publicity: Indicate your driving intentions early enough so other drivers have time to react to you. Make eye contact when possible. Avoid sudden movements and be as visible as the situation requires by using turn signals. • Proper: Proper attitude is very important in safe driving. Many crashes are caused by bad decisions influenced by anger, speed and frustration. When emotions run high, recognize and

WINTER TRAVELING TIPS As the winter and spring months kick into high gear, many Phoenix residents like to travel north. ADOT has a number of handy tips to help ensure drivers stay safe while on the road: • Slow Down and Leave Extra Room: Adjust your speed to conditions. Driving slower and leaving space between your vehicle and others when snow and ice are present can improve your ability to brake and prevent skids. • Leave Prepared: Dress for cold weather, bring extra clothes and gloves, be sure your cellphone is charged, and pack food, water and necessary medications. Make sure your vehicle is in

good working condition, starting with the battery, heater/defroster, wiper blades, wiper fluid, and brakes. • Pack an Emergency Kit: For starters, take blankets, a flashlight, an ice scraper, a small shovel, a container of sand for traction, a reflective vest and hazard lights or reflectors in case your vehicle becomes disabled. • Beware of Black Ice: Black ice tends to form at night when melting snow freezes and is especially common on bridges. City News The “I Got Your Back” Project Helps Comfort Spinal Patients at PCH By Emma Wolff HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD SOMEONE SAY, “I GOT YOUR BACK”? Well, 17-year-old North 32nd resident Darcy Vecchione is giving this phrase a whole new meaning with her community service project for spinal patients. “I got your back” is printed on every one of the handmade pillows she created to provide comfort to the spinal and orthopedic patients at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. For Vecchione, this project is personal. In August 2019, her life changed forever after receiving a diagnosis of spondylolisthesis, a disorder of the spinal cord in which one vertebra slips onto the bone below it. The spinal condition can result in severe back and leg pain. It was an overwhelming, frightening and painful time in her life. But, rather than becoming disheartened and gloomy, it inspired her mission to help children in similar situations find comfort. “As soon as I was diagnosed, I knew this experience wasn’t going to be easy,” says Vecchione. “I wanted to help others as soon as I could. Once I started feeling like

myself again, I decided to put this community service project in action.” While dealing with her condition, Vecchione found comfort in a little blue pillow. This petite pillow relieved the strain on her back and was the only thing that seemed to ease her daily pain. The pillow went with her to school, out to eat and when she was with friends. She believed other children in pain deserved the relief she found from her pillow. “This project is very special to me. Going through painful spine surgery at such a young age was not easy, so I wanted to make it better for other kids experiencing similar situations,” says Vecchione. “I wanted them to know someone in their community understands their pain and is here to offer support. With every pillow I include my contact information so patients can reach out whenever they need. This way they know I’ve truly got their back.” Vecchione’s “I got your back” pillows were distributed to the patients of Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The travel-sized pillows are compact, so children like Vecchione can have support anytime and anywhere.

“The lead orthopedic doctors at Phoenix Children’s Hospital said the pillows were a huge hit. The patients were delighted to receive something to ease their discomfort and they were smiling from ear to ear,” says Vecchione. “A few kids reached out to tell me they haven’t let go of their pillow during their time in the hospital. Phoenix Police Reflect on 2020 and Look Forward to the Future By Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams 2020 IS BEHIND US, MARKED AS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE YEARS IN MODERN HISTORY. The challenges of a global pandemic, rising domestic violence and homicide rates in cities across the country, and social unrest surrounding race, policing, and politics have impacted our country and our community. As the Chief of the Phoenix Police Department, I am confident we completed 2020 a better department. We have implemented substantial changes that improve our ability to meet community expectations to serve, protect, and reduce crime in Phoenix while treating community members with dignity and respect. CRIME TRENDS Our department had some 825,000 interactions with the public in 2020. Our Communications Bureau answered more than 2 million calls for service. Thefts, burglaries, and rapes are all down. After a decade of lower murder rates, Phoenix mirrored a national trend, with the number of people killed at the hands of another reaching numbers more like what our city experienced in the early 2000’s. Despite the increase, our Homicide Unit is working hard to find justice for these victims, with a clearance rate nearly 10% higher than the national average. Early in 2020 when we saw a trend of increasing domestic violence, our department teamed up with other City of Phoenix and community resources

along with media partners to launch the Domestic Violence Help! campaign. This multi-pronged approach helped raise awareness and provide resources to potential victims. COVID-19 COVID-19 impacted many aspects of policing. We initiated an Incident Management Team to address solutions to the pandemic. With a focus on education, officers interacted with the public, sharing important health and safety information regarding the virus. At that same time, we looked for additional ways we could support the community. This included the detailed process of certifying our Crime Lab to provide support for COVID-19 testing. The Phoenix Crime Lab is the only crime lab in the country to provide this community service. OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING AND POLICE REFORM Phoenix residents rightfully expect officers to be faithful guardians of public safety and only use force as a last resort. This community expectation was reinforced after the untimely death of George Floyd where Phoenix was one of more than 2,000 cities nationwide with demonstrations calling for police reform. These demonstrations were largely peaceful, and I appreciate the commitment of our Community Engagement Bureau, our Central City Precinct and the many, many officers who assisted. I was able to speak directly with and

hear the concerns of organizers. This led to an evaluation of several of our policies to reflect the high expectation we have of our sworn and civilian employees. These changes include banning neck restraints such as the carotid control technique. The Duty to Intervene policy now makes it clear that we expect all employees to step in and stop what they know to be excessive force by a fellow employee. LOOKING AHEAD There is still more to be done, not only within the police department but through a coordinated effort across the community. Nowhere is this more evident than the need for mental and behavior health services. Despite the vital role police play as first responders, we are not always the appropriate response to a 911 call for service. Rethinking who responds to mental health, homelessness and domestic violence calls will strengthen our community. Internally, we’ve launched a new initiative to build a team of employees focused on the department mission to constantly and continuously improve both as an organization and as individual employees. I organized the Center for Continuous Improvement (CCI) with five key focus areas: operation and policy management, accountability, technology and transparency, messaging and employee wellness and development. This group is laser focused on evaluating best practices so the Phoenix Police Department can always be moving forward.

The CCI will also evaluate recommendations from national organizations such as the National Police Foundation and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. During the nationwide demonstrations calling for police reform, I participated on the U.S. Conference of Mayors Committee on Police Reform and Racial Justice. We came up with multiple recommendations to reimagine policing. Many we already do. Some still need work. These include things like creating a use of force data dashboard, evaluating tactics to ensure we are impartial in our policing, and building up our community policing programs. Phoenix is a fast-growing city, attracting people who want to live, work and play in a safe environment. I know under the leadership of Mayor Kate Gallego and the Phoenix City Council, 2021 will be a year where the Phoenix Police Department will thrive in our mission to support the safety and security of all residents and visitors.

Phoenix Implements Hazardous Waste Home Pick-up Program THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A 6-MONTH PILOT PROGRAM THAT WILL ALLOW PHOENIX SOLID WASTE CUSTOMERS TO SCHEDULE A HOME PICKUP OF THEIR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) MATERIALS.

hazardous materials, including things like batteries and paint,” says Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “We expect this effort will result in up to 700 tons of waste diverted from landfills annually. I’m proud that Phoenix can provide this common sense service at no additional cost to residents.”

The HHW Home Pickup Pilot Program will be managed by the Phoenix Public Works Department in partnership with Kary Environmental Services, a local company that offers professional collection and handling of hazardous waste materials. Public Works is responsible for the proper collection, diversion and disposal of trash and recyclable materials from more than 400,000 Phoenix residential customers.

To participate in the program and schedule a pickup, solid waste residential customers who wish to dispose of HHW materials—such as paints, aerosols, batteries, electronics and chemicals—need to remember three simple steps:

weeks of every other month. Actual collection of the materials will take place the following month. 3. Place properly contained, sealed and labeled HHW materials at a visible and accessible area next to your garage or front door on the scheduled pickup date. This is important for safety purposes. Do not place HHW materials at the curb or on the sidewalk. “During these difficult times, it’s important for the City of Phoenix to provide vital services to our residents in a safe, physically distanced way,” says Vice Mayor Thelda Williams, chair of the Transportation, Infrastructure and Innovation subcommittee. “By implementing home pickups for household hazardous waste materials, the Public Works department is meeting this need, while also ensuring proper disposal of chemicals and toxic wastes that could harm families and the environment.” There is no additional cost to request a

home pickup for solid waste residential customers. The program is already included as part of the solid waste monthly rate. For the 6-month duration of the pilot program, each solid waste customer/ household is entitled to one free HHW pick-up. Additionally, the current HHW Alternative Drop-off program, implemented in April 2020, will remain available at no cost to Phoenix solid waste customers. On average, Phoenix’s HHW collection program diverts approximately 500-700 tons of HHW materials from the landfill.

Education A North 32nd Teacher Receives National Certification

VSchools is proud to announce that Elizabeth Cook, a Title I reading specialist at Palomino Intermediate School, is one of the newest National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in Arizona. National Board Certification is the highest certificate an educator can achieve in the United States.

Administered by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Board certification is a rigorous and reflective process that requires teachers to showcase the National Board Standards in their practice. Teachers often take up to three years of continual work to achieve certification. Research shows that students of NBCTs have improved learning outcomes. “For me, becoming a National Board Certified teacher was a challenging and incredibly worthwhile achievement that has allowed me to strengthen and improve my teaching practice and become the most impactful teacher I can be,” Cook says. “It’s a remarkable feeling to be a part of a group of educators who are dedicated to improving the quality of education for every student.”

Cook has been teaching for a total of nine and a half years, all of them in PVSchools. She also completed all of her internships and student teaching within PVSchools as part of the iTeach program at Arizona State University. “I want to extend a huge thank you to all the coaches in the pre-candidacy program and to the district for providing an amazing support system to make this journey possible,” she adds. Since 1996, teachers throughout Arizona have been seeking and achieving National Board Certification. The Arizona K12 Center provides support and resources for teachers to pursue National Board Certification. This year, 48 Arizona teachers achieved certification. Altogether, Arizona is home to 1,576 NBCTs with 660 teachers currently pursuing National Board Certification. According to the National Board, there are 127,781 NBCTs across the U.S.

Phoenix Water Debuts New Activity Book with Stormwater Hopper

hoenix Water’s mascot, Hopper, is a friendly desert toad that represents stormwater education. In Hopper’s newly released activity book, “Hopper’s Stormwater Adventure,” students go on a journey to discover what happens to rainwater that flows into the storm drain. One of Hopper’s most important messages is that stormwater runoff flows untreated into washes, rivers, canals and retention or detention basins and it’s the community’s duty to protect the water. The activity and coloring pages throughout the ten-page book teach students how to protect stormwater and prevent pollution in the storm drain. Hopper takes students through a maze to learn where stormwater goes on page three. On page six, students fill in the blank using a secret code teaching them how to protect stormwater. Students test their knowledge on pages seven and eight by selecting which Hopper is preventing stormwater pollution. By the end, students will know that only rain belongs in the storm drain.

n Valentine’s Day, Arizona will celebrate its 109th birthday. It took 49 years for Arizona to become a state from the time it was first declared a territory, but the 48th state finally was admitted to the Union on February 14, 1912. One of the many things we love about the great state of Arizona is it’s wild and wooly past. The tales told about the special places in this state make learning about the history of the Wild West a rootin’ tootin’ hoedown! Arizona had its share of controversy and mayhem on the journey toward statehood, but our history pre-dates the beginnings of the United States. Oraibi, a village on the Hopi reservation, was settled prior to 1100 A.D. and is one of oldest continuously inhabited settlements within the United States. Prehistoric ruins of native people date back thousands of years and are widespread throughout Arizona. One of the oldest standing European structures in the country, San Xavier del Bac mission in Tucson, was built in 1699. And our most famous landmark, the Grand Canyon, is not only around 17 million years old, but is also one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the only one located within the United States. Here are few fun facts about State 48, the Grand Canyon State, that you might not have known: • The first barrel of tequila ever was produced in Nogales, Arizona, in 1936.

The museum was named for Sharlot Mabridth Hall, a well-known poet, activist, politician, and Arizona’s first territorial historian.

FORT VERDE STATE PARK: Camp Verde in the central Arizona’s Verde Valley, is full of historic sites, including Fort Verde State Park, a well-preserved example of the Arizona Territory in the wild west era of the late 1800s, and the nearby Montezuma’s Castle National Monument, an 800-year-old legacy of the Sinagua people who lived in ancient Arizona. JEROME: Jerome, west of Camp Verde, was once a thriving copper mining town and is today well known for its hauntings. BESH BA GOWAH: Just outside the city of Globe, east of the Superstition Mountains, is Besh Ba Gowah, an archeological park featuring the ruins of the ancient Salado people who lived in the Globe-Miami area almost 800 years ago. TOMBSTONE: Tombstone, located south of Tucson, is home of the infamous OK Corral and is one of the most famous and celebrated towns of the historic Old West. These are just a few of the many spots in Arizona to learn about our Wild West past. alentine’s Day is February 14. It started long ago as a Roman festival and was later converted to St. Valentine’s Day by Pope Gelasius around the end of the fifth century. Much later, in the 14th century, it came to be celebrated as a day of romance. These days, we also give gifts to other family members we love to let them know just how dear they are to us. One way to show our family we love them is to get a will or trust in place. A proper estate plan makes

it much easier on your loved ones if you become incapacitated and when you are no longer here. Without a proper estate plan, you may leave a gigantic mess. Your family will have an expensive and time-consuming ordeal ahead of them, and worse, they may end up fighting. HAVING A PROPER PLAN MEANS YOU AVOID SOME OF THESE BIG MISTAKES: Not having a plan: This seems obvious, but it is the number one mistake made by 60 percent of Arizonans. If you don’t have a plan, don’t worry. The state of Arizona has one for you, but it may not be what you want. Put your own plan in place instead. Who needs a plan?

The 2021 Job Market and Its Impact on Real Estate By Lynn Janson, Realtor

n early January, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released their most recent jobs report. The BLS report showed that Americans lost 140,000 jobs in December. That is a frightening number of lost jobs and will dramatically impact those households. As frightening and devastating as that number is, we need to give it some context. Greg Ip, Chief Economics Commentator at the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), explains: “The economy is probably not slipping back into recession. The drop was induced by new restrictions on activity as the pandemic raged out of control. Leisure and hospitality, which includes restaurants, hotels, and amusement parks, tumbled 498,000.” In the same report, Michael Pearce, Senior U.S. Economist of Capital Economics, agreed. “The 140,000 drop in non-farm payrolls was entirely due to a massive plunge in leisure and hospitality employment, as bars and restaurants across the country have been forced to close in response to the surge in coronavirus infections. With employment in most other sectors rising strongly, the economy appears to be carrying more momentum into 2021 than we had thought.” As we continue to distribute the COVID-19 vaccine throughout the nation, and the pandemic gets under control, the vast majority of those jobs will eventually come back.

Arizona is one of the places people from states like California, Illinois, and others, are moving to in droves. Rick Sharga, Executive Vice President at RealtyTrac, doesn’t believe that a rise in foreclosures and short sales will be the case: “There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic despite massive unemployment levels and uncertainty about government policies under the new administration. But while anything is possible, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see another foreclosure tsunami or housing market crash.”

cupuncture has been used for over 3,000 years to naturally relieve pain, restore health and nurture wellbeing. Acupuncture is mind-body-spirit medicine: it is equally effective for physical maladies and mental-emotional imbalances. Many studies show that acupuncture can successfully treat most health concerns, from pain and anxiety to infertility and allergies. It’s estimated that about one in ten Americans have tried acupuncture. Acupuncture is rapidly becoming more popular especially since the opioid crisis has more people turning to natural pain relief methods. There are over 13,000 studies researching if, how and why acupuncture works. The most well established studies verify that acupuncture prompts the body to release endorphins and endogenous (self-made) opioids. Newer studies find that releases adenosine (the A in ATP), which is a natural analgesic (pain killer), vasodilator (improves blood flow), and sedative (natural calming effect) the moment an acupuncture needle enters the body. The most frequently asked question about acupuncture is: Does it hurt? Many people are afraid of needles. Many of us associate needles with injections and blood draws. Those needles are much thicker than an acupuncture needle. Under a microscope those needles have a serrated edge because they are meant to shear through tissue whereas an acupuncture needle is smooth. The needles we prefer are as thin as hair. They glide into the body almost with no sensation or a tiny pinch. Acupuncture points are generally located near nerves but not directly on nerves and also are not near major blood vessels. Bruising can occasionally occur if a tiny capillary is pierced. Most people find acupuncture painless and pleasurable. OTHER COMMON QUESTIONS: Q: How much does it hurt compared to a tattoo? A: It’s not comparable because getting

tattoos hurt and have much larger needles. Q: Are needles reused? A: No, all needles come in sterile packages and are disposed of safely. Q: Do I keep my clothes on? A: If you do remain clothed it’s best to wear clothes that are easy to roll up past the knee and elbow. If we’re treating back or hip pain, then yes, clothes are generally removed. Q: How long are treatments? A: It depends on what we are treating and your age, state of health and preferences. Treatments can be as quick as 20 minutes while some can be 90 minutes to incorporate needles on two or more sides of the body as well as other treatments such as cupping or massage. Generally, an acupuncture treatment lasts 45 minutes. Q: Do I need to lay perfectly still when my needles are in? A: No, the needles are so thin they bend with movement. If you need to move to rest more comfortably you should be able to adjust your position without pain. Q: How old do you have to be to receive it? A: My youngest patient was three weeks old (colic) and my oldest patient was 94. Q: How many sessions do I need to see a difference? A: While most patients do feel a difference within one treatment, acupuncture is a physiological process. Acupuncture helps the brain perceive pain less while stimulating the body to heal tissue and rebalance neurotransmitters and the brain as well as the immune and endocrine systems. Most chronic conditions can take 10 to 20 treatments. Research shows that acupuncture works best when received two to three times per week. The best part is that the benefits of acupuncture are long lasting with many people still feeling better a year after their initial treatment course. aturopathic medicine is a specific type of health care that focuses on whole patient wellness. The role of a naturopathic physician is to diagnose, treat and prevent acute and chronic illness by identifying underlying causes and removing barriers that may be impacting health rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. This style of medicine can be very beneficial for children. There are many ways naturopathic physicians can support children. WELL CHILD EXAMS/CHECKUPS Well child exams start in infancy to check growth and development. This includes detailed health history review, diet and nutrition evaluation, physical examination, immunization discussions and support, and a growth review. In addition to the basics, we also focus on the naturopathic approach by supporting parents, discussing milestones, and strengthening the immune system. SKIN CONDITIONS Skin conditions are common in my practice, especially for children. Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions I see in children and can last throughout adulthood. Typically, this appears once food is introduced. When there is a skin condition, the first place we investigate is the digestive system. We

take a full health history, including any antibiotic use and focus on healing the gut. Food sensitivities can also be a cause of skin conditions and we explore those by elimination of highly allergenic foods or food sensitivity testing. Other skin conditions, such as acne in teens, can also be supported in similar ways with an additional focus on hormone balancing. DIGESTION Gastrointestinal support is a staple for all ages in naturopathic medicine and is an important aspect of pediatric health. Many children struggle with constipation and stomach pain. We investigate the root cause of any digestive upset. We focus on diet and food allergies and/or sensitivities. We support the gastrointestinal tract by balancing gut flora, especially if there has been a long history of antibiotic use. ver since the 1980s,when scientists first start to warn publicly of the dangers posed by global warming, the need to replace our carbon-belching system of power generation with clean renewables has been inherently urgent. One might think the fate of our planet’s eco system – not to mention the human populations that depend on their stability – should suffice to nudge people into embracing solar energy, the planet’s most abundant potential power source, yet regulators and lawmakers seems determined to come up with ever-more-creative ways of adding artificial urgency to the choice to go solar. Since the Arizona Corporation Commission voted in favor of APS’ 2016 request to pay owners of rooftop solar less for their power than what they sell it for, thereby initiating a new regime in steadily falling annual compensation for solar customers, that urgency has been relative: Do I want great financial rewards this year or just good ones next year? But, with a new rule going into effect soon, homeowners now face an absolute barrier to access that depends on the total power being generated by solar panels in their community, with no certainty over how soon they will indefinitely shut out of the opportunity to go solar. The new rule limits the proportion of solar-generated electricity allowed to exist within an area served by a substation to 15 percent of its peak capacity.That means that once 15 percent of a service area’s total electric current is supplied by rooftop solar, everyone else who might want to go solar may be left out in the cold. The rule technically went into effect February 2020, but implementation has varied somewhat by utility; for example,Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has already started screening applications to determine whether their areas are still eligible for new solar installation, but APS has yet to announce an actual start date. installation company, is urging his sales force to emphasis the urgency of going solar now before areas get effectively locked out.When TEP began implementing this new screening and review process last year, dozens of homeowners were denied their solar applications with the utility, even after having already signed up to have solar installed on their homes. Once the new policy is put in place with other Arizona utilities, it is expected that other areas of Arizona will hit their maximum quickly, though it is too early to know where and when with any specificity. Some areas served by APS are sure to be at their allowed imposed limit as soon as the utility starts evaluating applications under the new rule. Buckeye and North Peoria are especially saturated with rooftop solar, Berechet said.“It’s a really bad situation honestly, for both homeowners and everyone in the solar industry,” Berechet said.“It’s almost surreal. We have one customer who just last week was permitted by the city to have their solar system installed,” he said.“Tomorrow, we have to call this customer and cancel their project because the utility denied his solar application due to this new rule.” The essential environmental and economic factors still favor solar power in Arizona. The state has the third lowest cost per watt for solar panels, and it has the second highest potential solar resources, just after Nevada, according to U.S. Energy Information Agency. Yet state regulatory decisions have proven to be a drag on solar’s expansion in what should be one of the most favorable environments for the technology. Data from the Solar Energy Industries Association shows yearly residential installation rising steadily from 2010 to 2017 (the year the state’s utilities started paying less for solar-generated electricity than what they sell it for) and slowing declining or stagnating in the years following. Only time will tell how this new restriction will affect solar energy’s future in Arizona.
