REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE

t’s no secret that the real estate market is showing a shortage in available homes. Mike Orr, who holds a master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford, and is the founder, chief analyst, and editor of the Cromford Report shares his thoughts on the greater Phoenix real estate market:

“The lack of supply can only be described as shocking. A 30 percent decline since this time last year to reach the lowest level since August 2005. This to satisfy a population that has grown more than 20 percent since 2005. Anyone who thinks this severe shortage will not result in a significant rise in prices is going to have another thought coming pretty soon. The median sales price is already up 11 percent over the last 12 months and the average price per square foot is up almost 9 percent and probably heading for a doublefigure appreciation rate. We note that December 2019 contained 21 working days and December 2018 contained 20, giving 2019 a 5 percent advantage. However, unit sales were up more than 20 percent so making an allowance for the advantage still gives 2019 a win by 15 percent. The listings under contract count is less impressive. While it is almost 20 percent up from last year, it had been almost 24 percent up at the start of December, so gave back a little of its lead. Only a little mind you. We

are clutching at straws here to find something indicating a little cooling in the market.

Demand remains higher than normal but the Cromford® Demand Index has eased from around 107 to around 103 over the past four weeks. This will not make much of a difference while supply remains under half of what is needed for a balanced market. The big hope for buyers must be for a surge in new listings arriving over the next 12 weeks. Perhaps sellers will be tempted by the higher pricing they can achieve. However, if they are staying around Phoenix, they will have to pay more for their new home too. Phoenix is currently the strongest large-city housing market in the USA, and this is fueled by inter-state population movements. Retirees are a big part of that, but so are people moving here from California and other Western states for work and the lower cost of living. Demand is likely to remain healthy despite the rising prices. The primary question is whether we will see any change in the meager supply of homes for sale. If this is to take place, it is likely to be visible over the next few weeks. There has been no sign of an improvement in new listing flows in the last several weeks of 2019. But 2020 is a new year, so we will be watching closely for signs of change.”

PHOENIX ORDINANCE REQUIRES SHORT-TERM RENTAL OPERATORS TO REGISTER WITH THE CITY

By City of Phoenix, Council District 3 Councilwoman Debra Stark THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL RECENTLY APPROVED A NEW ORDINANCE REGARDING SHORTTERM VACATION RENTALS TO ADDRESS ISSUES AND MINIMIZE THE NEGATIVE IMPACT TO NEIGHBORHOODS THAT MANY RESIDENTS HAVE BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS.

While short-term rentals are convenient for many people visiting the city, and

they are a great way for homeowners to supplement their income, they must be operated responsibly. “Last year, the Arizona Legislature passed a law that allows cities to create a registry and prohibit non-residential uses and uses that would otherwise require a permit or license. Phoenix’s ordinance is consistent with state law. The ordinance will require owners of short-term vacation rentals to register with the city and provide contact information for emergencies and complaints.

The owner must also post contact information inside the rental in a conspicuous place. When requested by police, the owner or designated person must respond within 60 minutes by phone or text after receiving the request. Multiple contacts may be listed.

Additionally, the ordinance outlines an enhanced penalty structure. A first violation is $500; a second offense on the property within 12- month period is $1,000; and the third and subsequent offenses within a 12-month period will incur a $1,500 penalty per offense.

The Phoenix City Council heard from many residents on this issue—some who were supportive, and some who were not. We know that this issue impacts many, not only in Phoenix but statewide. As such, the State Legislature has an ad hoc committee assigned to address the impact of short-term rentals on Arizona communities. PHOENIX COMPLETES LED STREET LIGHT CONVERSION, ESTIMATING $3.5 MILLION IN ENERGY SAVINGS PER YEAR PHOENIX RESIDENTS ARE EXPERIENCING IMPROVED VISIBILITY ON CITY STREETS AFTER THE CONVERSION TO LED STREETLIGHTS. The city of Phoenix completed a citywide conversion of nearly 100,000 standard streetlights to energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) units. This conversion is one of the largest completed by any U.S. city. “As the fifth largest city and fastest growing city in the nation, I want to make Phoenix a model of sustainability for communities across the country,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. “These new LED streetlights not only bring us one step closer to that goal, they also provide tremendous annual cost-savings for residents.” The conversion was approved by Phoenix City Council after several years of testing and evaluation of various LED streetlights. Based upon community input and the evaluations, Phoenix adopted 2,700 kelvin as the standard kelvin level for Phoenix’s new LED streetlights, which is considered a warmer color temperature for LED lights. The new LED streetlights are anticipated to save the city approximately $3.5 million in annual energy costs. By switching to more energy efficient LED fixtures, the city reduced the amount of electricity needed to illuminate the streets by approximately 53 percent. emissions of up to 18,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide a year -- the equivalent of taking 3,800 cars off the road. LED streetlights also have longer lifespans and produce better light quality than the previously used high pressure sodium streetlights. In addition to substantial energy savings, the LED fixtures will reduce maintenance expenses over their service life. Each of the nearly 100,000 new fixtures comes with a ten-year warranty. LED technology can also improve roadway

visibility and safety due to the improved distribution of light compared to high pressure sodium streetlights. Improved visibility has been linked to a reduction in crime and increased pedestrian safety. The city encourages the public to report streetlight outages, repair requests and other concerns to phoenix.gov/atyourservice by clicking on the “Streetlight Repair Request” form or by calling the streetlight hotline at 602-495-5125. CELEBRATING NORTH 32ND IN 2020 By Allison Barnett

IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT IS CERTAIN, IT IS CHANGE. We are so fortunate to have City and County officials that seek to continue to improve our community through effecting positive change by creating partnerships as well as initiatives to continue to evolve the North 32nd corridor. While there are certainly still some challenges to overcome in terms of absentee commercial property owners seeking top-market values for lackluster properties, we have a created a community that reinvests where they live and/or work on a daily basis. Many of our newest business owners are also homeowners in North 32nd. This is a huge win for all of us as people who work where they live are more likely to continue to reinvest in the improvement of their community through supporting initiatives with other local business owners.

At a little community costume party five years ago, we put out a notepad where we asked our community to write down what they would appreciate seeing in our community. A plethora of ideas came from the North 32nd community, and we are so lucky that some of these ideas have already come to fruition in our neighborhood, like a new coffee shop (hello Press), and an ice cream shop, Gelato Spot. We have continued to expand on this list by bringing it to our Facebook page, where the imagination continued to flow. It is incredible to see the transformation in those five years. Recently, the corner of 32nd St. and Cactus (which has one of the largest vacancies in the area) came up in our Facebook group as an area of concern. Again, we asked our community to visualize how we may continue to transform that corner. We were so lucky that Rebecca Golden, formerly of 32 Shea and now LoveCraft, chose to open her newest outpost at one of the areas that so many would like to see revitalized.

We have been lucky enough to see this manifest several times over with Wright in the Garden’s work, with Desert Voices as well as the Young Mind Community Center. And to be honest, it really starts with our kiddos. We are lucky to have both strong public and charter schools in our areas and active parent communities.

In 2020, we look forward to continuing our transformation and coming together to continue to build a stronger and more robust community as we welcome both new residents and businesses.

Enchanted Chapters, one of our newest local businesses, has been equally invested in creating an environment for people to gather together for special reading events of all ages as well as creating another space with their community room to be able to host even more events.

FUNDPHX LETS YOU LEARN ABOUT THE DOLLARS AND SENSE IN PHOENIX’S BUDGET ARE YOU INTERESTED IN DIVING INTO THE DOLLARS AND SENSE BEHIND WHAT MAKES THE CITY OF PHOENIX RUN? Now you can learn more about all the programs and services the city provides, and what it costs to bring them to you every day.

That’s possible through a new tool, called FundPHX, that takes the city’s $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget and brings it directly to your device – computer, smart phone or tablet. All the city’s programs are there, with costs and descriptions, so you can learn about what it takes to provide everything

from youth recreation activities to reading programs and senior services in your neighborhood. The tool is loaded with General Fund budgets for departments or city functions. Each of those areas is also linked to the city’s Inventory of Programs, which provides more detail on a department- and program-specific level. With FundPHX you can provide comments directly on the budget, and let the city know what you think is important. You can add funding to programs you’d like to see grow, and reallocate funding from programs that you feel could be used elsewhere. Once you’ve made your choices, save your work, and share it with the city. An essential part of planning for the city of Phoenix is the development of its annual budget every year. The more than $1.4 billion General Fund operating budget includes everything from police and fire services, to parks, libraries, and senior services.

The city of Phoenix is known for one of the most transparent and participatory budgeting processes in the country. Over the years, staff has looked for ways to include more people in the budgeting process, especially those who are not able to attend the city’s budget hearings. This tool allows people to participate at their own pace, on their own schedule, in conjunction with the city’s traditional budget process. The FundPHX software lets you see for yourself what each service costs, and how much it would cost (or save) when you change service levels. With a budget that size, supporting the fifth largest city in the country and 1.7 million residents, it can be a challenge to understand everything that goes into the services you receive. To help residents better understand how our budget is created, the Budget & Research Department has added a new tool to gather feedback and help you see what makes Phoenix run. PUTTING AN END TO ROBOCALLS WITH THE TRACED ACT By Congressman David Schweikert

I AM EXCITED TO REPORT CONGRESS HAS FINALLY PASSED THE TELEPHONE ROBOCALL ABUSE CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT AND DETERRENCE (TRACED) ACT, LEGISLATION CREATING STRONGER AND MORE ROBUST POLICY TO COMBAT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS. Now that this legislation has been signed into law, phone companies will be held responsible for verifying calls, and criminals working behind illicit robocalls will be held accountable. Robocalls have become an incessant problem faced by the people of Arizona. These calls are likely telecommunications providers or can entail fraudulent activity. Do not call lists are proving to be ineffective, and I have been working to advocate for increased transparency and higher penalties for unauthorized calls. After introduction, I knew I needed to co-sponsor the TRACED Act because it was strong, bipartisan legislation that would provide a solution from Arizonans. This legislation increases the authority of the Federal Communications Commission 6 • February 2020 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

(FCC) to expand civil penalties of up to $10,000 dollars for telemarketers who violate legal call restrictions and accommodates the FCC by allowing more time to administer these laws. It also puts legal responsibility on telephone companies to verify incoming phone calls.

I am proud of the work my colleagues and I were able to accomplish by working across party lines to pass thoughtful and effective legislation, and I am grateful to have been a part of this effort. To take greater preventive measures, I have included below links to resources for you to use to learn more about what Cox Communications in Arizona is doing and information from the National Do Not Call Registry about how you can stop receiving unwanted calls. BE BALLOT READY FOR 2020 ELECTIONS WITH NEW MARICOPA COUNTY WEBSITE MARICOPA COUNTY VOTERS NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO FIND OUT EVERYTHING THEY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ELECTIONS IN 2020: BEBALLOTREADY.VOTE. Voters can make changes to their voter information, find what upcoming elections they are eligible for, sign up for text alerts, explore the new ballot style and more.

The Maricopa County Elections Department and Maricopa County Recorder’s Office launched the website with a new campaign to educate voters about the March 17 Democratic Presidential Preference Election and how to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020. Ads will run in both English and Spanish across a variety of platforms.

The County is investing in voter education to improve the voter experience. A key piece of this campaign is to inform voters that only registered Democrats can participate in the Presidential Preference Election on March 17. “We are expecting historic voter turnout in 2020, so it’s important that we do everything we can to make sure voters are informed about upcoming elections,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Clint Hickman, District 3. “Be Ballot Ready is an easy way for residents to find everything they need from looking up whether they are registered to vote, to when’s their next election, and what’s on their ballot.” The campaign will also introduce a new mascot “Phil the Ballot.” Modeled after the county’s new oval ballot style, “Phil the Ballot” will encourage voters to Be Ballot Ready for elections in 2020.

“I am excited to introduce voters to ‘Phil the Ballot.’ We hope this character will get voters excited and engaged with the election,” said Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes. “There is a lot of important information that voters need to know about the elections, and Phil can help voters Be Ballot Ready.” Kicking off the 2020 election season, Tempe and Chandler are holding citywide elections on March 10. The following week, registered Democrats throughout Maricopa County have the opportunity to vote in the Democratic Presidential Preference Election on March 17. Because the Presidential Preference Election is not a primary, registered independents are not eligible to vote. The Republican and Libertarian parties have opted out of holding a preference election. $601K AWARDED TO AZDPS FOR TRAFFIC

ENFORCEMENT AND EQUIPMENT WITH AN INFLUX OF WINTER RESIDENTS AND VISITORS — AND ALL THE EVENTS THAT MAKE THE VALLEY A VERY DESIRABLE PLACE TO BE — THERE IS NEW FOCUS ON PUBLIC SAFETY, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT AND EQUIPMENT TO KEEP ROADS SAFE. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has been awarded over $601,000 in grant funding from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). The grants will help with overtime costs for troopers and dispatchers during driving under the influence (DUI) enforcement details, targeted distracted driving enforcement operations, and seatbelt enforcement details. The grants will also allow for the purchase of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) speed measurement devices and other speed measuring radars to be used for traffic enforcement by troopers. Additionally, the grants will be utilized to purchase a fully equipped police vehicle, drones and drone equipment, bike helmets and rear safety lights to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety education throughout the state of Arizona. One of the grants will also provide money for the state crime labs to purchase materials and supplies to further support their mission. north32ndnews.com

USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER SET TO OPEN IN FEBRUARY 2020 THE SALT RIVER PIMA-MARICOPA INDIAN COMMUNITY (SRPMIC) IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE PUBLIC OPENING OF THE USS ARIZONA MEMORIAL GARDENS AT SALT RIVER ON FEBRUARY 22. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River, located at 7455 N. Pima Rd. in Scottsdale, honors the brave individuals that served aboard the USS Arizona that sank on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It pays tribute to, and recognizes the individuals aboard the ship that day;

sharing their stories, their efforts and their sacrifice. The Salt River Indian Community became the recipient of a large part of the superstructure of the USS Arizona (BB-39), identified as the original Boat House, and built the Gardens around it. The Boat House relic was part of the original memorial built at Pearl Harbor in 1951 and is the largest and only piece ever given to a tribal community. “It is a great honor that the land of the O’odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa) will be the final resting

place and home to the Boat House relic of the USS Arizona,” said Martin Harvier, President, SRPMIC. “The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River as a whole, will honor the brave soldiers who were aboard the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and all military veterans who have served our great country.”

In 2007, an American flag flown over the USS Arizona Memorial was awarded to the SRPMIC and the American Legion Bushmaster Post 114. Today, it is kept at the American Legion Bush-

master post with an annual “Breathing of the Flag Ceremony” that takes place during the SRPMIC Pearl Harbor Day event as a fine tribute to all soldiers. The honor of receiving a retired flag started a journey that will forever change the landscape of SRPMIC and Arizona. The USS Arizona Memorial Gardens at Salt River spans the exact length and width of the USS Arizona with over 1,500 commemorative columns, outlining the actual perimeter of the USS Arizona. The project extends across the entry drive of Salt River Fields to the north and juts into the lake on the south. Each column is representative of a life aboard the ship that day.

In addition, there are gaps within the column outline representing an individual who survived the attack. As the day ends, each column will subtly glow with light, transforming the memorial at night representing each individual as a light and that their light will continue to go on and stand through the test of time. The Gardens will be open daily from dawn until dusk and is open to the public. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is proud to honor all Veterans and takes pride in sharing the stories of some of those aboard the USS Arizona. Every single person nominated that day deserved the award, and I would be happy whatever the outcome. It was a long-awaited moment. They announced the first winner, and we clapped. It was time for the second girl and we screamed as soon as the words ‘Megan’ left her mouth. None of us thought another girl from the same district would be a winner, so we settled upon the fact that no one else would get it. Then, we heard the words, ‘These names were a bit hard to pronounce.’ I won. I didn’t expect it, not in the slightest. That day, I realized what winning that award truly meant. It was the opportunity to represent all of the brilliant, beautiful, and bold people sitting around me. It was taking their voices and ideas and shining a light on them. Through the mentoring and program, I aspire to further the programs of many women working hard to make changes to the world they live in, and I aspire to do this while learning new lessons and forging long-lasting friendships with the other girls,” added Sreenivasan.

CHEROKEE ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES REBUILD WITH GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY ON MONDAY, JANUARY 13, CHEROKEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS, PARENTS, NEIGHBORS, TEACHERS, STAFF AND SCOTTSDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (SUSD) OFFICIALS GATHERED TO CELEBRATE THE KICK-OFF OF THE CHEROKEE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS. The ceremony featured remarks from Scottsdale Unified School District Supt. Dr. John Kriekard; SUSD Governing Board President Allyson Beckham; SUSD Asst. Supt. for Elementary Education Dr. Ibi Haghighat, Cherokee Principal Walt Chantler, Cherokee APT President Kendra Scheer, and representatives from Orcutt Winslow Architects and CORE Construction, whose companies, respectively, are responsible for the design and construction of the new school. The Cherokee project began in October 2018, when the SUSD Governing Board approved the school to be the next school redeveloped with voter-approved 2016 bond funds. A series of meetings with the Cherokee community including neighbors, parents, teachers and staff, began in January 2019. Additionally, a Visioning Committee worked in concert with the architects to fine-tune that community input for the architects’ plans. In November 2019, the SUSD Governing Board approved a construction contract with CORE of $23,040,730. Construction will take place in three phases between now and mid-2021. A guaranteed maximum price of $23,040,730 has been set by CORE Construction for the project. The original estimate for the entire project came in it $24,119,290, however, savings in areas including enclosures and structure reduced the overall price. The Cherokee construction project is part of the 2016 voter-approved bond for the district to renovate or rebuild specific schools.

Phase 1 of the rebuild is expected to run through mid-July, with a construction crew working on the southern area of the school by demolishing the overhang and playground equipment and constructing two buildings that will house classrooms. Crews will then demo existing classroom buildings upon release for summer break at the end of May. Construction will then begin on two other buildings and the playground. Phase 2 is set to begin in August and will include finalizing construction on the remaining classroom buildings in the center of campus. This Phase is expected to wrap up in January 2021, and the final phase will commence in February 2021 with demolition of the remaining buildings on the northern end of the campus as well as construction of a new parking lot. The entire project is scheduled for completion on March 19, 2021. Cherokee Elementary School, located at 8801 North 56th Street, was built in 1974. GIRL SCOUT COOKIE DESSERT CHALLENGE RETURNS FOR SIX WEEKS EACH YEAR, GIRL SCOUTS IN ARIZONA PARTICIPATE IN THE LARGEST GIRL-LED ENTREPRENEURIAL PROGRAM IN THE WORLD: The Girl Scout Cookie Program. From January 20 - March 1, more than 10,000 girls in central and northern Arizona will be walking around neighborhoods and boothing in front of local stores learning entrepreneurial skills while selling delicious cookies. And for the seventh year in a row, participating chefs from restaurants across central and northern Arizona will go head-to-head to create a winning dessert with one of the Girl Scout Cookie flavors. The creation will be featured on their menus during February and, for the second year, GSACPC will offer an online poll for everyone to vote for their favorite! dessert with the most votes at the end of the challenge in central and northern Arizona regions will each be crowned the 2020 Girl Scout Dessert Challenge Champion in early March.

ost of us take soap and shampoo for granted. Our hands are clean, teeth brushed, and our faces washed. Sadly, for far too many of our neighbors, this is not the case.

For kids, school attendance, academic achievement, positive peer relationships, confidence, a sense of control, and health all increase with good hygiene.

Since 1988, those at Shoebox Ministry have made it their sole mission to provide hygiene items to neighbors in need through their network of over 30 nonprofit agencies, all of whom are local to the Greater Phoenix area. These agencies distribute their hygiene kits to their clients who are adults and children experiencing homelessness, domestic violence survivors, people in recovery, and others who need, but cannot afford, hygiene items. For many adults, having the opportunity to maintain their personal hygiene means that a homeless individual may have a chance at being offered employment, setting them on a path to become independent and productive members of society once again.

Lee Humes, founder of one of their nonprofit partners, Deep Within, and Shoebox hygiene kits recipient himself over 20 years ago, said “Shoebox Ministry and the personal hygiene items represented a new beginning in my life and my recovery, and gave me a fresh start with increased confidence to continue my life - and my journey.” While the government-funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds provides money for food, it never allows for the purchase of basic hygiene items. Shoebox fills this gap in our community, helping to alleviate the burden of having to choose or go without.

Arizona Gives Day is an annual giving movement uniting nonprofits, big and small, new and established, to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Arizona through online giving. The event helps raise awareness about the critical role Arizona nonprofits play in our communities and inspires people to give generously, creating a thriving and stronger Arizona for all. Re-enrollment is required annually and can be completed at www.AzGives.org before March 2. Registration deadline for new nonprofits is February 24. Since 2013, Arizona Gives Day has raised more than $17 million for nonprofits statewide. Q: I run or do other forms of exercise. Should I do hot yoga too? A: Yes! Hot yoga is excellent for helping align and strengthen your body and is a great compliment to all other forms of exercise. For many athletes, hot yoga is an amazing way to heal and recover from the stress their bodies experience with highimpact sports or other workouts. We’ve had many runners say that once they start practicing hot yoga, they are able to achieve their “personal best” in races! Hikers also experience a noticeable improvement with their endurance on the trails! Q: How do I prepare for a hot yoga class? A: Come to class well hydrated. This includes drinking plenty of water throughout the 24 hours prior to class and include an electrolyte supplement. Come to class on an empty stomach. Most students feel like eating two hours before class gives them enough energy to fuel their workouts without running on completely empty. Everyone is different, and after a few classes, you’ll find what works best for you. Just don’t come hungry - you burn a lot of calories in class, and your body needs the fuel! Lastly, you do not need to “get in shape” or do anything extreme to start practicing hot yoga! Just commit to consistent practice. In the beginning, it must be a discipline - we recommend booking your class times for the week and commit to being there. This discipline will transform to a habit and eventually to a passion. 4 EASY STRENGTH TRAINING EXERCISES TO HELP WITH EVERYDAY MOBILITY By Erin Mahoney, VP of Education at ISSA

he human body is a complex mechanism, where muscles, bones, joints, and ligaments all work together as one. The more effective the components of the body are, the better movement in activities of daily living, which can lead to a better quality of life. Q: What Does Functional Strength Training Mean? A: The goal of a functional strength training is to practice physical activity that translates to actions we do every day. These movements include being able to get out of bed, standing from a seated position, opening the refrigerator door, or reaching for a glass from the kitchen cabinet. In exercise terms, we use different movement patterns such as pulling, pushing, squatting, hinging, pressing, and lunging every day. Functional training improves coordination, balance, and body awareness and reduces risk of injury. As range of motion is enhanced, day-to-day activities become easier. Functional strength training is important in general, and even more so as a we grow older.

Q: What Are the Best Functional Strength Training Exercises? A: There are countless functional strength exercises we can perform to improve our health and wellbeing. The following four exercises focus on strengthening common muscles used in daily life. 1. Good Morning – This is a great exercise demonstrating a hip hinge movement pattern. When you lean over to pick something off the ground, you are performing this same movement. Good mornings help provide resistance for the hamstrings to avoid unnecessary lower back stress. No weights necessary. 2. Dumbbell Reverse Lunge with Rotation – This can improve getting in and out of a car by improving rotational core strength. This can be done with one or two weights. 3. Single-Leg Dumbbell Row – This is great for balance and stability, relating to picking something up off the ground. This exercise will also strengthen the back musculature for all pulling movement patterns, such as pulling a door

open. This can be done without weights or with a light handheld weight. 4. Farmers Carry – This is a great exercise for improving grip strength, but also posture. Posture is vital to optimal health, strength, and fitness. Considering all the sitting and standing we do at work all day, spine health should be at the forefront of our minds. If we properly strengthen the right muscle groups, then there should be no need to think about sitting up straight all the time. This can be done with two heavy handheld weights or one heavier handheld weight, one side at a time (be sure to do both sides to stay even). One side at a time will also help strengthen your core. Whether a you are a seasoned-gym goer or just starting your fitness journey, functional training is an important component to add into your daily routine. Get started by practicing these four movements, with 10 to 12 repetitions, three times. RING SIZING: CREATING THE PERFECT FIT By Indra Jhaveri, AMI Diamonds and Jewelry

This holiday got us thinking about rings, as many people choose February 14 as a day to propose. Once the perfect ring is selected, it often needs to be resized for the perfect fit. There are several ways to address this, considering each individual’s fingers are different. Depending on health situations, some individuals could have knuckle problems arise due to various medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, broken bones, etc. The proper fitting of a ring is essential for comfort and to ensure that it does not fall off. SIZING UP It is necessary to either stretch the shank or to add metal when sizing

up. Adding metal is the method most often used. To do this, the shank is cut through and a piece of the appropriate type of metal is added and soldered. Stones must be protected from the heat of the torch so stones may have to be removed and reset to be protected. Laser soldering offers such a precise application of heat that there is little possibility of risk to stones — even stones as delicate as opals and emeralds. SIZING DOWN It is common to cut the shank to remove some metal and then solder it back together. One of the least expensive methods of sizing down is the installation of a “ring guard” strip on the bottom of the ring. These strips are commonly gold plated, or gold filled with clamps at either end that wrap around the shank and can be adjusted to be tighter or looser. Professional installation is recommended with this method as well.

RING GUARD

When the knuckle is bigger than the digit, (a common issue with much of the population as many jewelers who do sizings will attest) this presents a different problem. Having to clear an over-sized knuckle, the inner diameter can be so large as to allow the ring to free float on the knuckle. One way of addressing the problem of over-sized knuckles is to attach two sizing dots to the inside of the shank. This allows the ring to slip past the knuckle yet still be snug on the digit and prevent spinning on the finger. There are also several mechanical methods available that address the problem of over-sized knuckles. The first method is called a Butterfly Clamp, which uses a 14-karat white gold ushaped strip about two-thirds of the size of the shank that is soldered to the bottom of the shank. The clamp is springy and therefore allows the ring to go over the knuckle, then hugs the digit. The second method is ForeverFit™, a self-adjusting shank. This uses a small u-shaped piece of metal above a leaf-spring placed inside the shank. This replaces the original shank and the spring allows the diameter to increase and decrease as needed.

t’s February, which in Arizona means prime golf season. Ranked as the second “golfiest” state in the union by Golf Magazine (only Florida ranks higher), our state hosts the best-attended golf tournament in the world, the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and is home to seven of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 courses. Our stunning desert and mountain views serve as a backdrop to a world class golf experience, and we can’t think of a better location to introduce the game of golf to your youngsters. There are many kid-friendly golfing facilities, camps, and training resources available in the Valley of the Sun.

any sport is to have fun. Golf is no exception. When you take your kids out to the course, rather than focusing on developing the proper swing and learning the fundamentals right away, let them enjoy just whacking the ball around and being creative. Experts recommend that adults focus on having fun with golf initially, rather than trying to develop a great swing or technical ability, so that your kids will be more likely to want to go to the course with you again. Playing frequently is the biggest key to developing a golfer; learning proper technique will come as you child’s excitement for playing golf grows.

Here are a few tips for getting your kids started on the right foot when you introduce them to golf.

It’s also a good idea to start with the short game when you’re getting kids interested in golf. It can be hard for small children to get a golf ball into the air, but almost anyone can putt. Take your kids to play mini-golf, or to the driving range to practice and learn about the game. Also, take time to teach them about golfing rules and etiquette while you play, and emphasize that this is a fun activity – there should be no pressure, even if they can’t hit the ball very well.

HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT Before you head out, be sure that you are prepared for your time out on the course. Wear sunscreen, hats, and the proper attire required by the course you plan to play on, and plan ahead for water, weather, and snacks. One of the most important things to think about is kidsized equipment. Many experts say that a putter is the best choice as a kid’s first club, then a 9-iron training club because it is fun and easy for kids to hit the ball in the air off of a tee. The weight and length of clubs makes a difference in a youngster’s ability to swing the club, so take time to visit a local golf store or pro shop to make sure your child’s clubs fit properly as they grow and develop. But a word of advice: golf equipment can be very expensive, so save your money until you know that golf is a good fit for your kid. Many instructors and courses have loaner equipment that your child can use until they start getting excited about playing on a regular basis.

KIDS GOLF RESOURCES There are hundreds of golf courses here in the valley, so do some research before you go to make sure that the course you want to play is kid friendly. Find out the course policies and costs of tee times, equipment rentals, and dress code so you can prepare ahead of time. BUILDING A BUSINESS FROM THE BOTTOM UP

arolyn Berry, owner of Clean Colonic, located at 4744 East Thunderbird Road, Suite 4 in Phoenix, has always been dedicated to and passionate about helping people. But it wasn’t until her own health issues and years of suffering that she turned to colonics for the answer to unlocking the mystery of her own health - leading her down the path to becoming a successful business owner today. Prior to owning her own company, Berry, a competitive women’s doubles sand volleyball player, was a massage therapist for 15 years. She then took a corporate job managing spas in a fitness center for nearly eight years where she developed systems and helped grow the business. After leaving that job, she wrote a book entitled “I’m Happy. How did I get here?” that included a program to lead people from chaos to happiness. And while happy herself, Berry was dealing with her own health issues. “I had physical issues with endometriosis, uterine cysts, fibroids, and adenomyosis. I almost got a hysterectomy because I suffered for 20 years and didn’t want to anymore,” says Berry. Finally, a friend suggested a colonic and she

COVER STORY decided to give it a try. Berry received seven sessions and the very next month, she had zero problems with her uterus — all of her health issues were resolved. She immediately took a new career direction and became dedicated to helping people through colon hydrotherapy. “I never thought I’d be in this business, let alone have two locations,” says Berry. “But it’s very satisfying to educate people on other ways to assist their body… not just for constipation and weight loss, but for other issues they may have. More and more research is coming out that everything starts in the gut — and I believe it.” Discovering that unique connection between the gut and brain was the key to her healing and led her to want to help other people find health through colon hydrotherapy. Berry opened her first location in Tempe as the California native was living in the area at the time. “I started with just one device in one room,” she says. But a short two years later, she was so busy that she made the decision to move into her own clinic, bought two more devices and was then approached with an opportunity to open a Phoenix location. “Two months later and with three more devices, I opened our second location on Tatum and Thunderbird.” For people that are experiencing gastrointestinal issues and even ones that aren’t, hydrotherapy can work wonders. “More and more people are realizing from word of mouth all the other aspects it can help with,” Berry says. “I get a lot of people who come in and have no issues… they just wanted to try it because they heard about it. They always are surprised at how much better they feel after. It is life changing.” Weight loss is certainly one benefit because the body can hold onto quite a bit of waste in the large intestines. “That is simply toxic and unhealthy — it’s best to have it as clean as possible,” she adds. While the first several sessions generally serve to clear out contents, and clean the pockets and north32ndnews.com

walls of the colon, the real benefit comes after about ten to 12 sessions which Berry refers to as a “reset.” Aiming to provide only the best services for her clients, Clean Colonic follows the manufacturer recommendations to the tee. “I use everything they recommend for cleaning, supplies, nozzles, etc.” she says, adding, “The device we use is registered with the FDA and is a Class 2 medical device.” Berry is highly trained to ensure each session provides a clean, sanitary, discreet and comfortable experience for the client. “We also have a staff that truly wants to assist with the process.” She even has a physician’s assistant on staff at her Phoenix location. Her Tempe location also offers an Infrared Sauna which stimulates internal detoxing through LED color light therapy. This technique restores imbalance by applying color to the body, an ancient technique used in Mayan culture. Benefits include reduced swelling, pain relief, decreased inflammation, and even reduced recovery time after medical or surgical procedures. Understanding that the process can sometimes feel daunting, Berry encourages people to view the short video on her website that walks potential clients through the exact process. She runs her business with the goal to provide the utmost of privacy to each patient and ensure that they are comfortable at all times. Patients are in a private room and each session lasts about 45 minutes. A trained and certified colon hydrotherapist is always nearby to monitor the process and provide the patient with any assistance or anything they need to ensure their comfort. For those that are squeamish about the idea of this type of service, there is no one that understands that more than Berry herself! “I didn’t want to do it myself,” she admits. However, once she tried it, she says, “It was life-changing for me. That’s why I am in this business.” She aims to continue to grow and bring awareness to the community, while maintaining

the integrity of colon hydrotherapy. “I want people to try it, even if they don’t have any gastrointestinal issues. And I’d love to be the clinic to help.” As she continues to see success with her business, Berry hopes to expand and open a few more clinics in the valley and then bring the concept to her hometown. ocal woodworking artist Monica Robles was quite literally born into her love of this creative craft. Growing up in Somerton, Arizona, Robles remembers her father building additions to their house and working on cars. “My dad was an amazing man, a true craftsman,” she says, “My parents built the house I grew up in…without any experience, my mom learned how to put up drywall and framing. I feel like this is why I love making things with my hands and the feeling of creating makes me happy.” After attending UofA, where she graduated with a BA in graphic design, Robles moved to Phoenix. SPRING TRAINING IS UP TO BAT THIS MONTH

ne of the greatest times of the year to be a valley resident, in my opinion, is during Spring Training! The amazing weather, the array of beautiful stadiums and the amount of sheer baseball talent that flocks to the valley throughout February and March in the name of Spring Training all add up to a great time, regardless of which team is up to bat. With convenient stadiums within reach in every area of the valley, there’s no excuse not to get out and catch a game during Spring Training. Attending Spring Training games is one of my favorite pastimes, and I’m not alone in declaring my love for Spring Training. The City of Peoria’s Mayor Cathy Carlot calls spring training one of the City’s favorite seasons of the year. “Now in our 27th year, Peoria is proud to be the spring training home of the Seattle Mariners and the San Diego Padres. While we continue to host the best lawn seating experience in the Cactus League, over the years, Peoria has worked hard to elevate the fan experience through a series of upgrades and new amenities,” Mayor Carlot says. “This includes more shaded seats, a children’s splash and play zone–the first of its kind in the Valley, and a private, luxury room available for up to 200 guests that offers a VIP experience with a private patio overlooking the diamond.” This year, baseball fans in the Peoria area can enjoy the action and excite-

ay out west, along the Colorado River, the “west coast” of Arizona stretches from north of Hoover Dam to just south of Yuma and the border of Mexico. Although the summers can be even hotter than Phoenix, winter is a great time of year to visit, and the Colorado River and Lake Havasu provide a cool getaway for every water enthusiast all year round. Here are a few places we recommend you check out when you head for Western Arizona. LAKE MEAD AND THE HOOVER DAM Built in 1936, the Hoover Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric power facilities in the country today and provides hydroelectric power to Arizona, California, and Nevada. One of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, the immense dam spans the Black Canyon between Arizona and Nevada, creating Lake Mead along the Colorado River. Visitors can see the dam up close by driving down a winding road into the canyon and parking to take a tour of the historic art deco structure. The byproduct of this fantastic feat of engineering is 700 miles of Lake Mead shoreline, an attraction for water and outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all kinds. Lake Mead National Recreation Area was the nations first designated recreation area, providing 1.5 million acres of preserved recreational space 28 • February 2020 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

ROUTE 66 AND GRAND CANYON WEST A bit further south as you head down I-40, you find many areas of the highway that run right along the historic Route 66, including Kingman, considered to be the heart of Route 66. Tiny towns a little east of Kingman also give you a taste of the historic Route 66, like Peach Springs or Seligman, the “Birthplace of Historic Route 66.” Grand Canyon West is located on the Hualapai Reservation and is not part of the Grand Canyon National Park. Grand Canyon West has two main locations: The West Rim, which is accessible from State Route 93 on the way to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, is the site of the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon. The second location is Peach Springs, located along a well-preserved stretch of the historic Route 66 and is the gateway to beautiful Havasu Falls at the bottom of the canyon. LAKE HAVASU Further down the Colorado River on Arizona’s border, along Highway 95, you will find the world-famous London Bridge, now a permanent resident of Lake Havasu City. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Havasu, on the Colorado River border of California

and Arizona, this area attracts visitors with its 50 miles of pristine lake and river waterways, laid-back community, and ideal climate for people who love the water and outdoors. Lake Havasu is also home to the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and many undeveloped wilderness areas along the Colorado River. YUMA About two hours south of Lake Havasu and Parker, you’ll find Yuma, a frequent stopping point for travelers between Phoenix and San Diego. As one of the easiest spots to cross the Colorado River, Yuma developed a unique and exciting history in the Old West Arizona Territory. Visitors can also enjoy the cool waters of the river nestled in the mountainous Sonoran Desert, play in the sand dunes, and visit many historic sites throughout the city. Whether you visit the famed Yuma Territorial Prison or the Colorado River State Historic Park, you’ll enjoy a visit to the southernmost point on Arizona’s West Coast. ROCKY POINT SEES ITS FIRST CRUISE SHIP SET SAIL

fter much anticipation and planning, the first cruise liner departed Thursday, January 9, from Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, commonly known in the United States as Rocky Point. The Astoria Cruise Liner is owned and operated by Cruise and Maritime Voyages.

“This is a major step in Rocky Point’s development and growth,” stated Keith Allen, Director of Sales of a new and contemporary condo development Encantame Towers and founding member of Peñasco Business Coalition. “With the launch of this cruise, we are hoping that Rocky Point, with its unique location on the Sea of Cortez, will be seen as a premier, local cruise ship port. It’s just another wonderful amenity added to this safe, beautiful beach town.” The Astoria set sail on the cruise titled “Treasures of the Sea of Cortez.” Over the course of the 11-day voyage, the ship will take passengers to eight ports along the Sea of Cortez, including Topolobampo, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Bahia Loreto, Santa Rosalia, and Guaymas. The ship itself has 250 cabins and can hold around 550

people. In addition, Cruise and Maritime Voyages arranged ground transportation from Phoenix and Tucson to Rocky Point. Most of the passengers are anticipated to be Arizonans and people from surrounding western states.

UNCUT GEMS

The Safdie brothers might currently be the best directors at making an audience root for the most irredeemable characters possible. Howie Bling, played incredibly by Adam Sandler, does almost everything wrong - constantly screwing over and hurting his family, friends, and business associates. Knowing all of that, there is something about his charm and mannerisms that make you want him to sink that half court shot. The brothers’ dark comedy and panic attack-esque filmmaking style also shines here in scenes that can make you laugh at even the most horrifying of moments. Bolstered by Daniel Lopatin’s score and a colorful supporting cast, you’ve got an experience that feels like the lost Martin ScorseseRobert De Niro collaboration. While this film likely won’t be for everyone, I highly recommend it.

This is Michael Bay without limits and that’s not necessarily good. Imagine his immature humor, over the top action and frantic editing…and then multiply it by 10. Now imagine one-dimensional characters, lazy continuity errors, obnoxious comedy and exploitation of some serious real-world horrors. None of the actors, despite being highly talented, bring anything to the table and Bay confirms that the charm of his insane style wears off after an opening 10-minute car chase scene. At least he avoids exceeding a 2hr and 15 minutes run time.

THE GRUDGE

The most disappointing films are the ones that feel like they waste all of their good qualities. Taking the anthology format of Grudge in a new direction with an R-rating, an interesting director like Nicolas Pesce and a great cast seems like a perfect idea. Unfortunately for the viewers, somewhere something went horribly wrong. There are no characters here, only archetypes (the haunted cops, the soon-to-be parents, etc.) The horror consists of nothing more than jump scares. Overall, the movie doesn’t do anything unique or interesting. The worst part was that somehow, in a series where there was always a sense of dread, grief or trauma, the film continuously pulls punches leaving it flat and almost comedic. While it’s still early in the year, I believe this will be one of 2020’s most underwhelming films.

Like a horror film, 1917 makes each moment feel like the difference between life and death. The long takes aren’t there just for the sake of showing off, but for Director Sam Mendes and DP Roger Deakins to place you in the shoes of the characters. This film mirrors real life with sudden, pivotal moments that change the course of everything, and everyone effected. The actors mesh perfectly in their roles - particularly the decision to give the minor/ supporting roles to major actors, portraying a sense of importance without taking away from the leads. The production design and looks are also incredible. My favorite nightmare is the detail given to No Man’s Land. As a whole, 1917 was an intense, emotional experience.
