LET’S GO, G.I.R.L.S! GIRL SCOUTS UNLEASH THE GO-GETTERS, INNOVATORS, RISK-TAKERS AND LEADERS WITHIN EVERY GIRL

By Alison Bailin Batz FOR SIX WEEKS EACH YEAR, GIRL SCOUTS IN ARIZONA PARTICIPATE IN THE GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM. From Jan. 21 – Mar. 3, more than 12,000 girls in central and northern Arizona will be walking around neighborhoods and boothing in front of local stores learning entrepreneurial skills while selling delicious cookies. Not only is every cookie sale a teachable moment, but because all proceeds stay local, girls are able to enjoy summer camp, robotics programs, field trips and even adventures out of state in a safe environment. Sales also have the potential to impact the community as troops reinvest their proceeds with service projects.

WHY GIRL SCOUTS Girls face unique challenges, and they need support from the very beginning to build the resilience and confidence to overcome peer and media pressure.

Research shows that single-gender environments build connectedness, competence and confidence in girls. While most schools and many extracurricular programs are now co-ed, Girl Scouts is one of the few singlegender organizations accessible to all girls and young women.

The inclusive, girl-led, all-female environment of a Girl Scout troop creates a safe space in which girls can try new things, develop a range of skills, take on leadership roles, and feel comfortable failing, dusting themselves off, and trying again.

YOUR LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC) started in 1936, and over the past 80-plus years has grown to serve more than 21,000 girls grades K-12 in over 90 communities across central and northern Arizona.

In 2018, GSACPC completed its fiveyear, $18 million Campaign for Girls in Arizona. Through the campaign, the Girl Scouts not only built and opened The Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls & Women at Camp South Mountain, an ADA-accessible year-round urban program center with camp appeal, but now own it debt free.

The center exponentially increased GSACPC’s capacity to serve more girls with relevant programming, from aquatics to STEM, all year long.

BUSY TIMES AND NEW LOCATION FOR ARIZONA HELPING HANDS HAVING SETTLED INTO A NEW HOME AT 3110 E THUNDERBIRD ROAD IN PHOENIX, ARIZONA HELPING HANDS is wasting no time in expanding services to children in foster care and involving our community in new and exciting ways.

In December, the organization provided holiday toys to 8,000 children through their 20th Holiday Toy Drive. More than 100 businesses participated in toy collection programs to make the holidays joyful for so many.

The year ended with the Mac & Gaydos KTAR Caring for Kids

collection drive filling the warehouse with diapers and more. 250,000+ diapers were collected through the event sponsored by Canyon State Credit Union. Collection boxes were also filled throughout December at all local Walgreens locations. On New Years’ Eve, 70 volunteers from the University of Central Florida, who were in town for the Fiesta Bowl, spent time sorting and organizing the vast quantity of donations. The team mascot, Knightro, along with the “Momsquad” (football player’s moms), alumni, spirit team, University president and other faculty and staff participated in this community give-back opportunity.

2019 began with a two-day event on January 3 and 4, as back to school clothing was provided for hundreds of children in foster care. In partnership with the Assistance League of Phoenix, and with funding from the BHHS Legacy Foundation, Operation School Bell gave boys and girls a brand new wardrobe.

Dan Shufelt, President and CEO of Arizona Helping Hands, tells us that with 15,000+ kids in foster care, there is so much work to do. “We love being able to provide support to kids throughout the State of Arizona. We can do nothing without support from the

community. We strive to put smiles on the faces of boys and girls who haven’t seen enough joy in their lives. Through collaboration and working together, we all can make a difference for kids in foster care!”

The Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation provided the lead gift to the Arizona Helping Hands $3 million capital campaign, enabling the organization to move into their new 18,000 square foot home and to accommodate these increased programs.

CHEF JOEY MAGGIORE CREATES NEW BUILD-YOUR-OWN CONCEPT MANGIA! PHOENIX IS ABOUT TO GET A LITTLE MORE SICILIAN. Opening this month next to The Sicilian Butcher in Phoenix, Chef Joey Maggiore, his wife Cristina and their business partner Flora Tersigni, are excited to announce The Sicilian Baker Cannoli Bar & Market. Located in what was formerly Edible Arrangements at Tatum and Greenway, the new concept will feature a build-your-own-cannoli bar. Guests will be able to purchase fresh pasta by the pound, sausage and imported cured meats and cheeses. A tavola calda style counter will include Sicilian pastries and assorted desserts. Maggiore has commissioned his cousin Giovanni La Rosa, a master pastry chef from Sicily, to help create the specialized desserts residents won’t be able to get anywhere else.

“This is definitely something one-of-a-kind in the United States,” said Maggiore. “We’re bringing Sicily

to the footsteps of Phoenix with what we’re building next to the Tatum and Greenway location.”

Designed by Cristina, the vision for The Sicilian Baker was brought to life by Jessica Avignone of JTA Interiors. The 1,400 square-foot venue will have black porcelain tile flooring, off-white brick walls and giant sliding barn doors throughout. Rolling pins will hang from the ceiling along with repurposed wire whisks in the form of ambient lighting. Red display cases of the meats and cheeses will line the outskirt walls with butchers standing behind them. Pastry chefs will be there to offer up incredible Italian treats such as cassatas, sfinci (Italian doughnuts), Sicilian cookies and much more. White marble bistro table and chairs sets will be placed throughout. Located right next to The Sicilian Butcher, guests will be able to walk freely between the two concepts.

The build-your-own cannoli bar will be a prominent feature at The Sicilian Baker. It will feature ten different flavored creams for guests to choose from including chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, lemon, pistachio, espresso and original. People will also be able to customize the size of their cannoli shells from mini to a foot long. Flavored shells such as chocolate dipped, pistachio encrusted and sugar coated will also be options along with multiple toppings.

This will be the first of three planned Sicilian Baker Cannoli Bar & Market locations for the metro area.

The second will open next to The Sicilian Butcher in Chandler and the third will open in the West Valley. Both are slated for next year. Maggiore said the restaurant group has plans to open 15 more Sicilian Baker concepts throughout Arizona.

The walk is to join efforts with Hope 4 Kids International to empower and bring new life to the children of Apuwai, Uganda! The “Walk” is symbolic of the trek made by young children and women in search of water in Uganda, every day. will provide fresh water that will transform the lives of those in Apuwai. Fresh water will give the promise of a future transformed with dignity, health, joy, and love.

Deepwater wells, at a cost of $10,500 each to drill, can provide access to safe water to nearly 10,000 people.

The goal for Give Change for Change is $18,000, which will be enough funds to drill a single well in Apuwai and send one RSL Coach and one Teammate to represent RSL AZ at the dedication of that new well in Uganda next summer.

NEWS FROM PHOENIX DISTRICT 3 COUNCILWOMAN STARK I AM PROUD TO CURRENTLY SERVE AS CHAIRWOMAN OF THE CITY OF PHOENIX AVIATION AND TRANSPORTATION SUBCOMMITTEE. The condition of our city streets is one of the top issues that I hear from residents and business owners in District 3 about on a daily basis – and is one of my top priorities as your District 3 Councilwoman.

At the Phoenix City Council Formal meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, we voted to accelerate the city’s pavement maintenance program, unanimously approving the first steps to implement a plan that advances $200 million in pavement maintenance projects on arterial and major streets.

This Council approval follows action taken in October to advance pavement maintenance efforts through the financing of Transportation 2050 (T2050) street program revenues.

Street Transportation Department has already begun the preparation work necessary for expediting pavement overlay work and it is scheduled to begin Spring 2019.

Thanks to the voter-approved T2050 plan we are making a critical and long overdue investment to improve our city’s aging street infrastructure. This investment creates a positive impact across the city and greatly enhances the integrity of the streets that our residents and visitors depend on.

Due to these Council actions – now, over a five-year period, more than 600 street miles are programmed to be repaved. Residents will see nearly a 300 percent increase in the number of majorstreet miles that are currently paved per year.

The budget boost will significantly improve both the condition of the city’s arterial and major collector streets, and the city’s local and minor collector streets beginning this fiscal year. The

Next steps for this program include identifying the highest priority streets to receive mill and overlay treatments for fiscal years 2021 through 2023. As part of the plan, in February/March 2019 presentations will be made at

community meetings, and in Spring 2019 an online tool will launch to allow community members to share their feedback on the proposed street repairs.

WINTER SWIM LESSONS MAKE A BIG SPLASH AT HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOL

N

ow that it’s winter time and the temperature outside is still rather cold, inside at the Hubbard Family Swim School in Phoenix, the temperature of the heated, indoor swimming pools is 90 degrees all year long. Many parents have been signing their children up for fun, indoor swim lessons.

“Winter is a great time to enroll children in swim lessons because it gets them all prepared and ready for safe swimming this summer when they’ll want to spend a lot of time swimming outdoors with their family and friends,” says Bob Hubbard, coowner of the Hubbard Family Swim Schools. “Swim lessons during the winter are not only terrific exercise and a lot of fun, but we also want to make sure that children learn how

to swim and are always safe around water. Our basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim. Learning to swim should not be a choice.”

Children who learn how to swim are also demonstrating more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to worldleading research led by Griffith University in Australia. Their 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have an advantage when starting school. Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition to school - their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development. The study

surveyed 7,000 parents from Australia, New Zealand and the U.S., over three years, as well as individually assessing 180 children.

The study showed that children’s fine motor skills and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school.

Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. There are even FREE “baby splash” swim classes for babies 8 weeks to 5 months of age all year long. Parent participation in the water is required. These wonderful, 30-minute water acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with

baby and also learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. There are several different baby splash class times offered throughout the week.

Advanced registration is required.

There’s a $25 registration fee to join and then all the baby splash classes are free.

“Our popular baby splash classes give parents an excellent way to spend quality time with their babies in the water,” adds Hubbard. “Their swim class together is wonderful bonding time and then after the class, the babies always enjoy a nice, long nap.”

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… A stacked calendar and a whole lot of variety! I’d imagine if I was followed around by an observer one day would be substantially different from another. Personally, some constants would be meditation or exercise or both, and I’m a pretty regular Phoenix Mountain Preserve hiker. I work out at Personalized Pilates, a studio at the NE corner of Shea and Tatum. For work, it’s really fair and true to believe that I have a flexible schedule. But, that translates to every day looking different with the who, where, what and times of to-do’s, appointments and events. The constant of my business are that I will be on the phone, navigating a persistent flow of email and text, in meetings with clients and my team zooming in and out of a broad spectrum of topics, and no doubt I will be personally handling sensitive, exciting and demanding issues and deadlines. At home, raising three kids means a frenzy of scheduled and unscheduled activities, interactions and appointments. We eat dinner together most nights and we still honor bedtimes because: good rest, quality time together and proper nutrition is important in a fast paced life like ours!

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN THE NORTH 32ND AREA IS… I lived in Cave Creek for a decade before choosing to move to the North 32nd community nearly three years ago. I see dozens of different communities and hundreds of houses every year. There really isn’t anything quite as wonderful as what we all have along the North 32nd Street corridor, and look at all the attention we’re getting and action we’re amidst in 2019! MY FIRST JOB WAS… At McDonald’s. My father was an area operator for a dozen plus franchise restaurants in the Long Beach and Los Angeles, CA area for over 25 years until he passed away in 2006. I began working the moment I could get a work permit at 14 years old and learned about customer service, orderliness, timeliness and hard work at that first job. It has served me well in what I do now!

A LEADER IN EVERY DESK - TEACHING KIDS TO BE LEADERS

I

magine a sign over the door of every classroom. The colorful sign says, Urgently Needed: Young Leaders.

Would your child be prepared to answer this call? Unfortunately, too many of us have fallen into the trap that leaders are the select and chosen few and that followers are the vast majority. Yet, leadership is not an all-or-nothing ability, something you either have or don’t have.

The truth is that all young people have some capacity for leadership.

Leadership skills are instilled, not inherited. One of the best things we can do for young people is help them develop to be leaders.

Leadership training starts at home.

As your child’s first teacher, your

goal should be to set the right example. Do what it takes to excite, motivate, and inspire your child to lead at home, on the playground, and in the hallways at school. Appeal to the young leader’s sense of adventure and make the invisible sign above the classroom door visible.

A leader in every desk is not about dividing students into leaders and non-leaders. Rather it’s about trying to develop the capabilities in each and every student to stand up to the many challenges of leadership. It is about teaching that leadership is a human endeavor, that leadership is about such issues as integrity, character, and helping others.

PREPARE CHILDREN FOR A LIFETIME OF LEADERSHIP It’s up to us as parents, teachers, coaches, and youth group advisors to instill these four fundamentals into their lives. Here are a few ways you

can teach and coach your child to become a leader: 1. Build Confidence to Build Competence.

Confidence comes from success. Be alert to opportunities. The only way your children can succeed is through accepting opportunities to lead.

Nudge them outside their comfort zone; empower them to get up and take action. Challenge your child and support them when they struggle.

2. Create an environment where your child can flourish.

Help your children construct a longterm perspective. Help them develop a game plan for turning their vision into reality. Teach them that success and accomplishment are not measured by how they compare to someone else, but how much they improve from where they started.

3. Establish healthy relationships.

Show them how to build positive relationships. Encourage your children to, as best possible, work through their conflicts on their own first.

Teach them how to maturely deal with disagreements. Embolden them to say, “Let’s work together.”

4. Remember that kids will be kids.

Leadership is hard work. All young leaders will constantly ask themselves, “So why should I be a leader?” They need to be taught, nurtured, and guided along their journey. Take the time to understand how your child is progressing as they strive to lead. All kids will engage in inner struggles over selfdoubt, frustration, and uncertainty.

They will be challenged and tested and need you to come alongside and pick them up as they experience setbacks.

As your child begins their leadership journey, remind them that there is no magical path to succeed as a leader.

Rather, it is a way of life.

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier It’s always surprising to hear how many Phoenicians have never spent time in Tucson. Just a short distance south of the Phoenix metropolitan area is a charming gem of southwestern sights to see.

Tucson is home to the University of Arizona, but ASU fans shouldn’t let that stop them from enjoying the many fascinating places to see in Pima County. The hotels and resorts are plentiful, but our advice is do your research and look at the map to plan your trip. Tucson is much more than what you can see while driving down the highway, and the limited view from I-10 just doesn’t do it justice.

Here are our favorite spots to visit while in Tucson.

ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM It’s a zoo. It’s a botanical garden. It’s a museum. It’s all of the above! The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is located in mountainous desert on the west side of Tucson, but still right down the road from both Old Tucson Studios and Saguaro National Park West. The museum provides visitors with gorgeous views of Sonoran Desert flora and fauna in a botanical garden type of setting. A stroll down the paved and unpaved trails takes you near enclosures that are home to various creatures native to the Sonoran Desert, from hummingbirds and butterflies, to javelinas, hawks, bears and mountain lions.

One of our favorite exhibits is the geological display, located in a mineshaft trail that takes you underground to see the wonders of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert under the surface. This state-of-the-art facility is a must-see if you are in Tucson – and worth planning a trip just to go there on the weekend.

OLD TUCSON STUDIOS Ever wonder where they made your favorite Western? It was probably right here in Old Tucson Studios. Located on the west side of Tucson, just down the road from the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, more than 400 movies have been produced at Old Tucson over the years - and they’re still going strong. With live entertainment, rides, tours and plenty to see, this is a great place to visit when you head to Tucson.

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK – EAST AND WEST Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in Arizona are found in Saguaro National Park West and East.

The West part of the National Park is home to a fantastic display of petroglyphs, mountains and Saguaros. The East part of the park provides an entirely different view of the pristine Sonoran Desert, mountain ecosystems and desert wildlife. Everything the Sonoran Desert has to offer is available in two completely different parks, focused on the same purpose – preserving the mighty Sonoran Desert and the Saguaros that give the National Park its name.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK Do you love fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas? Then you’ll love visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park. It’s opening in 1999 makes it a somewhat recent addition to the Arizona State Park system.

Located southeast of Tucson, near Saguaro National Park East, Kartchner Caverns State Park provides facilities for camping, hiking and of course touring the caverns. Be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly!

PIMA AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM If you love aircrafts, space and the history of flight, then the Pima Air and Space Museum should be on your must-see bucket list. This museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation and space museums in the world, featuring over 350 historical aircrafts from a Wright Flyer to a 787 Dreamliner.

The museum, which opened in 1976, is located on 80 acres in the southeast part of Tucson, near Davis– Monthan Air Force Base.

The Pima Air and Space Museum houses six indoor exhibit hangars, three of which are dedicated specifically to World War II. Walking tours and museum ground Tram Tours are offered daily. The museum is also the exclusive operator for bus tours of the “Aircraft Boneyard,” a 2,600-acre U.S. military and government aircraft storage facility also located in Tucson. If you love aircrafts, be sure to plan a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum. But give yourself plenty of time to explore – the museum is huge and there are hours worth of airplanes and historical displays to see!

SABINO CANYON RECREATION AREA If you are looking for a beautiful place to get outdoors for some hiking, biking or trail running, Sabino Canyon is home to a range of trekking opportunities from paved paths and easy trails, to more rugged mountainous terrain. Located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains on the northeast edge of Tucson, Sabino Canyon offers visitors a chance to see one of the premier natural areas in southern north32ndnews.com

Arizona. Sabino Creek flows almost year around and the Sabino Canyon tram offers narrated, educational 45-minute tours every day. The tram route begins and ends at the Visitor’s Center, with stops at points along the road to drop off and pick up hikers at the various trailheads. This is a wonderful spot to get a flavor for the beautiful Tucson wilderness.

BIOSPHERE 2 The Biosphere 2 is one of the most interesting and educational attractions we have visited in Arizona.

One of the world’s most unique facilities, the Biosphere 2 is dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues. The facility is a working laboratory for controlled scientific studies, an arena for scientific discovery and discussion, and is a far-reaching provider of public education. The mission of Biosphere 2 is “to advance our understanding of the natural and man-made environment through unique experimentation, training of interdisciplinary scientists, science education and public outreach, and organization of meetings to address grand challenges that affect the quality of life and the understanding of our place in the universe.” This facility definitely does that – and it’s open to the public for tours.

Biosphere 2 is located north of Tucson, near Oracle, and you can reach it on the way into Tucson if you are traveling down AZ Highway 77 from Florence, AZ. There is really nothing like Biosphere 2. Make a point to stop and take a look the next time you head to Tucson – it’s worth the trip!

“The politics, as well as the overemphasis adults put on kids to see a college scholarship as the ultimate goal, is ruining a kid’s ability to get the most out of sports,” says Maya Castro, author of The Bubble: Everything I Learned as a Target of the Political, and Often Corrupt, World of Youth Sports (www. thebubbleweb.com).

“This over-emphasis has created an environment amongst the parents and coaches that is similar to a mafia.

We badly need changes in this toxic, political and corrupt environment. And it must start with the parents.”

ENJOY THE MOMENT Too many parents and their young athletes are fretting the future. “Too often it’s all about winning and getting the scholarship,” Castro says, “but my parents told me there was a time when kids actually enjoyed playing for the sake of playing, and parents won just by getting to watch them play. We need to get back to that. Without it, memories are wasted.”

Castro, who says her own experience as a young soccer player was tainted by misguided and misbehaving adults, offers ideas on how adults can improve the youth-sports culture:

BE ENCOURAGING “Celebrate the effort, not just the result,” Castro says. “This goes for youth coaches as well as parents. When kids do some good things, don’t let the mistakes cloud your post-game comments. Be honest in discussing room for improvement, but not at the expense of making them feel like they have to play perfectly to get praise.”

STRIVE TO BE A MENTOR Castro says parents and coaches have a great opportunity to use sports as a teaching tool for life. “The learning aspect of the game needs to be the focal point of youth sports,” Castro says.

“Sports should be an extension of family values and behaviors. Good parents and coaches tie in the ups and downs of competition with the challenges in navigating adult life.”

MAKE EDUCATION FIRST Castro and many observers of youth sports say parents have lost perspective by thinking their kid is on the fast track to a scholarship or a pro career.

Statistics show few advance that far.

“In the meantime, kids are exhausted from travel leagues and tournaments,” she says, “and the way their future through sports is emphasized, education becomes a distant second.”

TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR KIDS INVOLVED IN SPORTS

ne of the many wonderful things about living in Arizona is that your kids can participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports all year round. There are many great options for getting your kids involved in local sports programs here in the Valley of the Sun. And not only are sports a great way for your kids to have fun, get exercise and stay active, they also teach kids important life lesson like sportsmanship, teamwork and respect.

Whether you want them to participate in team sports or as an individual, here are a few things to keep in mind when you are selecting a sport for your child.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPORT FOR YOUR CHILD Expose your child to a variety of sports activities, but help them choose a sport that is well suited to their age, interests and abilities. Don’t force your child to participate in a sport that doesn’t really interest them or that isn’t a good fit for their skillset – it’s a waste of both time and money, plus it can have a negative affect on your child’s attitude towards sports. Be sure to pick something that fits your budget and your schedule, to reduce your family’s stress level and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. And don’t forget to include the cost of equipment, clothing and gear in your budget when you choose a sport!

Make sure that both you and your child understand the basic rules of the sport and be a good role model for your child by not overreacting when the competition doesn’t go your way. Show them that it’s okay to be competitive and disappointed when you don’t win, but that sports are meant to be fun, even if you don’t always beat the opposing team or competitors.

MAINTAIN A BALANCE WITH SCHOOL, SPORTS AND FAMILY It’s important to keep your child from becoming overwhelmed with sports or competition. Participate in activities that work with your schedule and allow you to balance athletics with school, family and non-athletic hobbies. If your child feels stressed out, hates going to practices and games, or just participates to make you happy, it’s probably a good idea to call it quits.

A. Binge Eating Disorder occurs in men, women and adolescents. You do not have to be overweight or obese to have B.E.D. Binge-eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the U.S. Eating disorders frequently appear during the teen years or young adulthood but may also develop during childhood or later in life.

Q. What is Binge Eating Disorder?

A. Binge eating Disorder is not what we sometimes think of. It’s the feeling of a loss of control which leads to eating past the point of fullness, eating quickly, eating when not hungry, and feeling guilty and alone about the amount of eating that has occurred.

Q. Who treats Binge Eating Disorder?

A. A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or a Psychiatrist that prescribes

medications can assist you with the loss of control and the overeating.

Evidence suggests that medications that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be helpful for treating eating disorders and other co-occurring illnesses such as anxiety or depression.

It is also important to note that in order to reduce or eliminate bingeeating behaviors, people should also consider cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is a type of psychotherapy that helps a person learn how to identify distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns and recognize and change inaccurate beliefs.

A. BED is not a choice. No one would choose the shame, discomfort, and depression that comes with BED. Binging may acutely relieve negative mood; however, afterward, it generally causes the person’s negative mood to return even more intensely, reinforcing binging via negative reinforcement. Lower selfesteem and overvaluation of shape and weight contribute to weight bias internalization among patients with binge-eating disorder.

BED is a neurobiological condition that involves mind and body.

Researchers are finding that eating disorders are caused by a complex interaction of genetic, biological, behavioral, psychological, and social factors.

Risk factors for BED include: genetics, a history of trauma, and a culture that idealizes thinness.

If untreated, it can lead to chronic health conditions as well as anxiety and depression. The health risks of BED are most commonly those associated with clinical obesity, weight stigma, and weight cycling (aka, yo-yo dieting). Most people who are labeled clinically obese do not have binge eating disorder.

However, of individuals with BED, up to two-thirds are labelled clinically obese; people who struggle with binge eating disorder tend to be of normal or higher-thanaverage weight, though BED can be diagnosed at any weight. north32ndnews.com

Depending on health situations, some individuals could have knuckle considerations due to various medical conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, breaks, etc. Cold and heat can shrink or swell fingers, as well as some heavy work. This is a normal physical reaction. Women are more prone to swelling. It is recommended to have your rings sized so that it is somewhat snug to fit over knuckle. In cases of arthritic knuckles where variation from knuckle to digit varies, there are different solutions that can be applied depending on individual conditions (financial as well as medical conditions).

Adjustable Shank: For more severe arthritic cases, this might be the solution. As shown in attached diagram, the shank of the ring is cut off and replaced with this adjustable shank that normally allows two to three ring size variation between the knuckle and the finger below.

WRIGHT IN THE GARDEN: THE RIGHT SHOP FOR ALL YOUR GARDENING AND PLANT NEEDS

Anne Wright-Levi, great granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright, and her son Michael Levi, great-great grandson, are keeping their famous forefather’s legacy alive through their shop Wright in The Garden near 32nd Street and Shea Boulevard.

“I started this as a hobby business when I stopped teaching preschool in 2008,” said Wright-Levi. “I wasn’t doing much with it; then, Michael said, ‘Mom, what can we do to get this going?’”

“We started,” said Levi, “by repurposing antiques like wash buckets and bank drawers into planters for succulents, flowers, herbs and veggies.”

This mother and son duo also began doing gardening renovating and selling at farmers’ markets.

After two years of these activities, customers began asking where their store was located. Well, there wasn’t a shop, but according to Wright-Levi, “the thought kind of planted,” and they decided to go for it.

The next step was to find the right spot for their store. While they scouted around Phoenix, they were drawn to the North 32nd area. Originally from Arcadia, they’d lived in the neighborhood for many years, and loved that it was an up-and-coming community.

Both mother and son grew up gardening, and they each hold a certification in landscape design. A self-described man of few words, Levi enjoys researching and studying new plants.

“This love of gardening all trickled down from my family,” said Wright-Levi. “I learned so much from my grandparents and parents. I figured I got the outdoor nature side of the family versus the architectural side of the family.”

Gardening is definitely in the blood, and from hobby business to brick-and-mortar shop, Wright in The Garden has evolved since its early days. Year round, the store stocks a variety of succulents, cactuses and houseplants. Seasonally, they carry vegetable and herb plants as well as seeds for planting.

They also have some small outdoor plants for sale in season. And while they no longer do outside plantings, they are happy to help their customers select

COVER STORY the best plants for their landscape, order them to be delivered to their homes and recommend a professional landscape installer to do all the plantings.

Wright in The Garden continues to grow as they strive to exceed their customers’ expectations.

Recently, they’ve added several plant themed home goods pieces to their lineup such as pottery items and plant-based candles. And, so far, the home goods have been a hit with some products quickly selling out.

“

“The home good items have been good,” said Wright-Levi. “We aim to stay local with artists and small companies from here in the area.”

Gardening education for their customers is a huge component of Wright’s business and is evident in the many classes they offer throughout the year.

One mission is to teach their clients how to garden, enabling them to grow their own veggies and herbs.

Another mission is to educate customers on the benefits and proper care of house and outdoor plants. Throughout it all, they want their budding gardeners to understand that while they’ll face some setbacks along the way, they shouldn’t give up on the many benefits that come from plants and gardening. Whether it’s growing a tomato plant or an indoor succulent, they want their clients to succeed.

According to Wright-Levi, they plan on expanding their educational offerings this year. A naturopathic doctor will conduct several workshops pertaining to the key roles plants and herbs play in maintaining excellent health. During the summer, they also provide Saturday hands-on classes for kids and their parents making this a fun family activity. north32ndnews.com

In everything they do, customer service is their number one priority.

“The customer is most important,” said Levi. “It’s not the sale; it’s about the help. I’d rather help you pick the right kind of plant so you can succeed and then educate you on how to take care of that plant than focus on making a fifty-dollar sale.”

This family business is also actively involved in their community. Wright-Levi reports that the growth experienced in the area is a positive one with quality businesses opening their doors. They’re proud of their involvement in helping to shape their neighborhood into a special place to call home. And with people often calling out “Wright in The Garden” when they ride by and see Levi working in his front yard, they’re thrilled to know they’ve become a mainstay of small business life in their community.

“We’ve really found our niche in the area and have been loving the community. Everyone gets along and looks out for each other,” said Levi. “The neighborhood is very small business oriented.”

Customers are greeted at the door by Kaiya—a sweet Labrador retriever who is the official “Shop Dog.” This boutique garden shop feels like home and underscores the fact that it really is a family business. And like all moms do, Wright-Levi loves to brag that “anything in the store that’s not metal” her son has made— such as the checkout counter. Representing the next generation, Levi’s little girl, who is almost eight, loves coming in, and given her enthusiasm for the business, she’ll probably soon be running the cash register.

So, what’s next for Wright in The Garden?

“We’re very happy here in this shopping center,” said Wright-Levi, “and we feel very fortunate to have found this spot. It’s exactly the right fit.”

“We have plenty of growth in our heads,” said Levi.

“Now, it’s a matter of what avenue do we want to take first. What’s working right now is working well, so we don’t want to grow too fast. Slow and steady always wins the race.”

n the event of a fire or other damage to your property, would you be able to remember all of the items you lost? Having an up-to-date home inventory can help you get back on your feet faster after a disaster.

• You can also use a handheld camera or the camera on your cell phone to take photos or video to document your possessions.

Building a home inventory can seem like a daunting task, but doesn’t need to.

GETTING STARTED • Make it a goal to create an inventory for one space in your house each week, such as the kitchen or entertainment center, and soon you’ll have a complete list. Document your valuables with general descriptions, cost, and when and where they were purchased. Record serial numbers, if applicable. They are usually found on the back or bottom of major appliances and electronic equipment. Then, move on to the next space you need to document.

• Make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage for big-ticket items, such as jewelry, art and collectibles.

They may have increased in value and may require an endorsement in addition to your standard homeowners or renters insurance policy. Save receipts and appraisal documents with your inventory.

• Don’t forget items that may be tucked away in a garage, attic or storage shed.

USE TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE THE PROCESS EASIER • There are many free apps that can help

KEEP YOUR HOME INVENTORY UP-TO-DATE AND IN A SAFE PLACE • Your home inventory is only useful if it is accurate and accessible when you need it. Make a habit of adding any significant new purchases and receipts to your list.

• If you have a paper inventory, keep a copy somewhere outside of your home, such as in a safe deposit box or with a trusted family member or friend. Make a digital backup of your paper list by taking a picture of it, or scanning and uploading it to a cloud storage service.

• If your list is digital, keep a copy of it on an external drive or cloud storage service. Photos and video you take with your phone may automatically be saved to cloud storage. Check your mobile phone settings to be sure.

• If using an app, make sure the information you enter is backed up and that you know how to access it when you need it.

Once your inventory is created, add up the replacement costs for all of your items, and discuss your situation with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO COMPOSTING IN PHOENIX WHAT IS COMPOST? Compost is organic material that has decomposed.

It is made by combining “green” items like food scraps and grass cuttings with “brown” items like leaves and wood chips, which then break down over time. The resulting material is nutrient-rich and can be used in gardens as a soil conditioner and natural pesticide.

WHY COMPOST? Organic matter like food, food-soiled paper, and yard waste is more than a third of what gets thrown into the garbage. When sent to the landfill, it creates methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Backyard composting or with a local program protects our environment, saves landfill space, creates jobs, and enriches soil.

And it’s easier than you might think!

PARTICIPATE IN A LOCAL COMPOSTING PROGRAM OR DIY The City of Phoenix runs a municipal composting facility that processes yard waste. You can sign up for a curbside green bin that accepts grass clippings, branches, and shrubs.

If you want to compost food and food-soiled paper, Recycled City is the area’s local community composter. For only $10/month, they accept a variety of compostable waste, such as food, meat, dairy, napkins, and paper plates, and even pet food and hair trimmings.

TYPES OF HOME COMPOSTERS With a small investment you can turn your compostable scraps into nutrient-rich soil at home. There are several different home composters: • Manufactured compost bins, typically made out of plastic • Compost tumblers that can be easily turned • Wooden and pallet bins with compartments • Worm composting (vermicomposting)

FIXING ISSUES LIKE ODORS OR PESTS Home composting is easy, but there a few common issues that first-time composters run into: • Funny smells? Turn the pile and add some browns • Pile too dry? Spray some water, add in greens, mix • Fruit flies? Stir and add leaves or grass • Insects, raccoons, rats? There might be some meat or fatty food scraps in your bin. First, remove the meat or fats. You can also cover the pile with a heavy layer of soil, leaves or sawdust, or use an animalproof composter.

WHAT TO PUT IN THE COMPOST To get started follow these steps: Step 1: Collect your “brown” and “green” compostable material a. “Browns” – dry materials like wood chips, dried leaves, grass, and plants. It works even better when you rip or cut items into smaller pieces. b. “Greens” – fresh, moist materials like grass cuttings and food scraps.

Step 2: Put an approximately equal amount of browns and greens into your composter. To ensure that your pile does not smell, add more browns (1 part green, 2 parts brown).

Step 3: Soak the pile with water, but don’t over soak. It should be as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Many home composting systems are not well-suited for dairy, fish, meats, fats, or oil/grease, as these products take longer to break down and can attract pests.

HOW TO COLLECT COMPOSTABLES IN YOUR KITCHEN Collecting food and food-soiled paper in your kitchen doesn’t have to be a hassle. There are many types of countertop containers, which you can line with a certified compostable bag, or rinse to keep clean.

As you clean up, you can scrape leftovers directly into the bin. Once the container is full, dump it into your outdoor collection bin or composting system.

During the warmer months, you can keep your food scraps in the fridge, where they won’t smell or attract fruit flies.

WHAT ABOUT TAKEOUT CONTAINERS AND COMPOSTABLE PRODUCTS? If you eat out, you may bring home packaging labeled “compostable.” Containers, cups, and utensils like those made by World Centric are certified compostable by BPI, a third-party certification. This means a product has been tested to revert to carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds, and biomass at a rate similar to paper.

Compostable products can be made from renewable plant fibers, wood paper, or compostable plastics.

Products made from plant fibers or paper are not certified to break down at home, but you can experiment to see how they perform in your system. It helps to cut or rip them into smaller pieces. Compostable plastics should not be put into your home composting system, since they require higher heat to break down.

O

ne of the most common problems that customers walk into to our store with is “My toilet tank refills, shuts off, and then minutes later I hear it running again – where is the water going and why is this happening?”

Believe it or not, the toilets in your bathroom are pretty simple mechanisms that work very efficiently most of the time. Inside the toilet tank (under the lid where fresh water is stored) are a few basic components that can usually be easily replaced, and the MOST COMMON part failure is the FLAPPER. With hard water and chemicals, the plastic/rubber parts of the flapper deteriorate over time and water begins to seep underneath and into the bowl.

You won’t see the water leaking outside the toilet – it simply runs into the bowl and ultimately down the drain – wasting natural resources. Because of this slow draining of fresh water from the tank, the fill valve turns back on in order to keep the tank full and ready for the next flush.

Other replaceable parts include the FILL VALVE, FLOAT, and HANDLE.

All of these parts can be replaced with only a couple of tools and basic handson knowledge.

So, let’s focus on that FLAPPER and have you leak-free in a matter of moments!

STEP 1: TURN OFF THE WATER Turn off the water to the toilet by closing the shutoff valve located on the water supply line leading to the toilet.

IMPORTANT: If valve will not turn, do NOT force it. If the supply valve has been installed for a long period, it may be a bit corroded internally and forcing it may break the valve causing external water leaks and damage.

If the valve is stuck, it will be necessary to replace the supply shut-off valve. In order to do this, the main water supply to the house will need to be turned off before replacing the valve.

STEP 2: DRAIN TOILET Flush the toilet to drain the tank.

STEP 3: REMOVE OLD FLAPPER Disconnect the flapper from the flush handle lever. Undo the clip and let the chain drop.

STEP 4: SET UP FLAPPER BASED ON TOILET DESIGN

A. The most common design has the flapper attached to pegs on the sides of the flush valve. If there is one, cut off the ring on the back of new flapper, it won’t be needed.

B. If your Flapper doesn’t have pegs, use the ring on the new flapper to slide it into place over the overflow tube.

STEP 5: INSTALL NEW FLAPPER Put into place and hook each ear of the flapper onto one of the pegs on the flush valve.

STEP 6: CONNECT FLAPPER CHAIN Connect the flapper chain onto the handle lever and adjust the chain length leaving about one link of slack. When the handle lever is in the resting position, the chain should be relaxed with a little bit of slack. If there is too much slack, the chain will get caught under the flapper causing leaks.

STEP 7: TURN THE WATER BACK ON Turn the shutoff valve counterclockwise all the way.

STEP 8: TEST NEW FLAPPER Flush the toilet a few times to test the flapper and the chain length, watching the flapper go up and down.

etting seven days of emergency food into the hands of the hungry on the day requested was the founding principle behind the origin of the P V Emergency Food Bank in 1986. Thirty-three years later, the founding goal of lessening hunger of our neighbors in need remains and is true to our motto of “Neighbors Caring; Neighbors Sharing”. Located in the 32nd St. and Shea location since inception, we serve clients living within the 100 square mile area of northeast Phoenix defined by the boundaries of the Paradise Valley Unified School District.

We started as an “all-volunteer” nonprofit, and are proud of the fact that we remain so today. None of our 100+ volunteers receive a salary or compensation of any kind. We are a non-denominational, non-government supported agency that relies on the goodness of our community for support via food drives, individual donations, and limited grants.

WE DELIVER ON OUR MISSION WITH THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS: Family Assists – Our standard “Emergency Food Assist Program” provides a week’s worth of basic food items with the total amount of food given adjusted for family size. Anyone with a minor child can get food assistance 8 times per year, a single person 18 or older can get four food boxes a year, and seniors (over 65) get 12 full assists. A phone call plus a photo I.D and proof of address in the PV Unified School District are all that is needed to get seven days of emergency food assistance. This past year, we served 10,598 individual assists, including 4,527 to children.

School Nurses Program – Provides crackers/juice to Nurses at 33 Title 1 Schools to aid in the dispensing of medicine and for children who arrive at school hungry. Previously, Nurses were using their own monies for these products.

Food (or funds to buy food used) for all of these programs come from the generosity of our neighbors in the form of 1) food drives by schools, religious groups, civic groups and businesses, 2) Individual donations of food or cash, and 3) Foundation Grants for the Backpack Program.

The story of Dick Cheney and his rise through politics, leading to his run as Vice President under George W. Bush.

Writer and director Adam McKay’s anger seethes throughout this movie, and the fury affects the style, editing and tone here. It goes back and forth between comedy and horror in how they show the things that Cheney and co. were able to get away with, and it’s a rare case where conflicting tones work. It’s insane just how meta the film is, continuously breaking the fourth wall with a narrating Jesse Plemons (who has his own story in the film), several interesting editing choices, and a false ending. Christian Bale perfectly recreates Cheney in voice, actions and personality, and is joined by a fantastic cast (especially Amy Adams). The documentary style (with wonderful shots

by Greig Fraser) adds to the realism and cements the uncomfortable feeling you are left with.

THE MULE

A ninety-year-old man takes up a driving job after falling into financial strain, only to discover its connections to a major drug cartel.

For someone who’s been directing for nearly 50 years, there’s a very amateur feel to Clint Eastwood’s new film. Maybe it’s due to his tendency to shoot very few takes, but none of the actors ever seem really ‘into’ the film, aside from Eastwood himself (who happens to play the main character). The situation at hand never resonates because the characters don’t seem to really care, so why should we? The film also seems to have an iden28 • February 2019 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

tity crisis when it comes to tone, because sometimes it really wants you to take the story seriously while also treating many moments as a comedy. Speaking of which, the humor is filled with outdated “kids these days…” and “the internet is terrible” jokes, along with some out of nowhere racist humor. Aside from that, it’s boringly shot and edited, making for an overall bland film. It’s bizarre that a film with this much talent can turn out the way it did.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

A young woman and her family must do anything possible to save her lover from prison time after being accused of a horrific crime.

Barry Jenkins’ follow up to Moonlight is the kind of film that you can tell someone put more than their all into it. The film goes deep into the lives of Tish and Fonny (played expertly by KiKi Layne and Stephan James), showing their full uncensored lives, warts and all. But the genius of Jenkins is how he presents it - simple, normal and not overly staged.

A different filmmaker would try to make some scenes feel more fast-paced and hectic, but here, they are intimate and lovely. The energy from our leads also crosses over to the supporting cast, namely Regina King and Colman Domingo, and even the minor characters, including Brian Tyree Henry (who absolutely steals the show in his major scene).

Combine that with James Laxton’s old photo-like cinematography and Nicholas Britell’s beautiful score, and you have a love story for the ages. One that will make you feel all sorts of emotions, while making you think by the end.

NEIGHBORHOOD ARTISANS NETWORK: HELPING ARTISTS GROW THEIR BUSINESSES

M

ichelangelo sculpted the famous Pietà when he was only 24, and Grandma Moses started painting in her 70s—proving that you’re never too young or too old to achieve your artistic dreams. Dreams are attainable. Transform them into your life’s work, and enjoy the passion and success that spring from doing what you love.

Dreams, though, require hard work and discipline, and it’s often more challenging for those pursuing careers in the arts to convert their talent into dollars.

However, thanks to Gwen Jorgenson and her Neighborhood Artisans Network, Phoenix artists now have a unique and amazing opportunity to showcase their work. Jorgenson provides the location, and with the Network’s growing popularity and clientele, crafters have the perfect marketplace in which to turn their creations into profits.

Jorgenson, who’s always wanted to be an artist, began painting in her 40s. Like all creative types, she longed to sell her work and develop a customer base. Most artisans depend on craft booths at festivals to help establish their reputation and grow their following.

Festivals are typically annual events, and even if an artist attends several different ones throughout the year, they may not provide sufficient customer contact to elevate them from hobbyist to professional artisan.

In order for an artist to realize steady money, their craft must be worked like any other small business.

Understanding that artists need the consistency of regular shows, Jorgenson devised a program where artists could display their handmade works and exercise their entrepreneurial spirit.

“I realized that I knew plenty of other artists—enough to start my own craft show,” said Jorgenson.

And that’s exactly what she did. The Neighborhood Artisans Network hosted its initial show in her

driveway before progressing to various other public venues. Then, in 2017, all of her diligence and dedication paid off when she secured their current prime location.

“It all came together when Genesis Church granted us the use of their parking lot at 32nd Street and Thunderbird Road,” said Jorgenson.

Genesis doesn’t charge them to use their lot. However, they do ask for a nominal fee to use their restrooms.

In fact, this is all the artisans must pay; they aren’t charged any other fees to show their handmade items.

Location really is everything, especially when you’re next door to the “very popular” Original Breakfast House.

“We receive a lot of foot traffic from the restaurant,” said Jorgenson, “and we promote them just by being there. Original Breakfast House is such a busy place.

From about 8:00 a.m. on, there is always a line.”

October through April, the Neighborhood Artisans host their show one Saturday per month from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with two in December. According to Jorgenson, the group is comprised of local artists representing the following art forms: • Toffee and Cookies • Wood Burning Signs • Upcycled Rusty Gold - Lamps and Signs • Jams and Preserves • Barnwood Signs • Pottery • Spoon Jewelry • Woven Table Runners • Fractal Gourds & Furniture • Leather Purses & Pouches • Folk Art Carvings • Hand Crocheted Hats • Wire Wrapped Serving Pieces • Aprons and Accessories • Acrylic Flow Painting

Variety is the spice of life, so she doesn’t duplicate any art form. Jorgenson has designed every aspect to be professional. The artisans are required to meet specific standards in terms of the quality of their artwork and its exhibition.

“This isn’t your ordinary craft show where anyone can display,” said Jorgenson. “This is a handpicked group of independent operating artisans who’ve met the criteria and made the commitment to attend the events.”
