I
n times of turmoil and uncertainty, everything can feel as if it’s going either too fast or too slow. We appear to be going through one of those hectic times, with the world rushing toward a carbon-free energy revolution while simultaneously struggling to deliver the equipment needed to make the revolution work. Snarled supply chains are threatening to jack up the cost of residential solar power at a moment when the worldwide push for green energy has never been fiercer—and when the practical benefits of renewable, dependable power have never been clearer. Technological innovation and scaledup production steadily pushed down prices for photovoltaic cells (the main component of solar panels) over the past decade to unprecedented lows, but events are conspiring to push back. Supply-chain slowdowns have driven significant and sustained increases in prices for PV equipment for the first time since Wood Mackenzie started crunching the data in 2014, the energy analyst said earlier this year in a report published in conjunction with the Solar Energy Industries Association. Data from the second quarter of 2021 show a spike in year-over-year equipment costs for all system types (including residential), and the researchers foresee consequences for customers early next year if transport snarls aren’t straightened out soon. As it is, these slowdowns are already driving up costs for raw materials used in panel manufacturing, such as mono-polysilicon and silver, and increased costs for panels are expected to follow. And that’s not the only raincloud on the horizon. After rising at a steadily increasing rate, home energy prices are set to keep climbing through the rest of the year and throughout 2022 at about a 3.4-percent annual rate, according
to a recent projection by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Financing costs, which track mortgage rates, are expected to rise from their current rate of 1.99 percent APR beginning sometime next year. Here’s the good news: it’s not too late to take full advantage of the still historically low cost of equipment and financing and secure a great deal on your own personal power plant. Depending on how soon your system is installed, you could even secure your 26 percent federal tax credit in time to use it early next year. Grounded32 Offers Locals a Welcoming Community Space By Lauren Subia Photo Courtesy of Grounded32 GROUNDED32, A NEW NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION LOCATED IN NORTH 32ND, PROVIDES A CREATIVE SPACE FOR PEOPLE TO BE THEMSELVES, CHALLENGE THEIR MINDS, AND BUILD LONG-LASTING INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS. “A lot of us—single people, those new to the area, or people rebuilding their lives after hardship—don’t really have a communal space to meet others that’s inclusive and
open,” explains Rachel Curry, the founder and CEO of Grounded32. “It is really important to have activities that are wholesome and family-friendly, but not necessarily catered to kids. Our real goal is to make enriching activities, a sense of belonging, and personal growth accessible to everyone.” “We’re really providing a space for people to come and be creative, to have conversations, and to build a community outside of work, religion, school, or the local bar,” adds Shawn Pfunder, Grounded32’s creative director. “People just know ‘Hey, there’s probably something going on at Grounded32 tonight. We’ll head over there.’ It’s part of their weekly routine.” Grounded32, located at 13651 N. 32nd Street, hosts a variety of weekly gatherings and classes for people to build friendly relationships with others while also bettering themselves. From dance classes to movie nights to slam poetry to potluck dinners, there is something for everyone. In addition to attending classes, locals also can book the space and host their own gathering, so long as their class has an altruistic purpose. “We are available to anyone who wants to facilitate a
group. If someone is looking to rent space to teach or host a gathering, please do it here as we are one hundred percent run by volunteers,” says Curry. “Visit our lending library, shop local art, or just stop by and say hello!” The nonprofit works to not only provide people with a positive outlet that is beneficial for their social wellbeing, but their mental health as well. Curry explains how the center has taken on a “Clubhouse Model,” a psychosocial rehabilitation environment that is founded on the concepts of empowerment, community, and to counter the stigma of mental health troubles. “The purpose is to have a safe place to be a messy human being, free from the stresses of everyday life. Grounded32 is a calm place for people to relax, explore their interests, strengthen their confidence, and heal,” says Curry. “People should know it’s a place where they can always get a high-five or a hug. They can be a wreck and know that being a wreck is okay. Every person deserves to unwind and have fun. The Singletons Open the H.U.B. Community Center To Support Single Parent Families Battling Cancer THE SINGLETONS, A 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION THAT SERVES THE NEEDS OF SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES BATTLING CANCER, JUST OPENED THE HELP US BUILD (H.U.B.) COMMUNITY CENTER. The Singletons’ H.U.B. is a 3,344-square-foot building located at 28th Street and Bell that will provide a safe place for families to connect with volunteers, counselors, and other members of the community for support and resources. The H.U.B. will be the new operational venue for all Singletons programs that currently serve over 72 families. Community programs include educational classes in health and nutrition, small-scale fundraisers, and The Singletons Kitchen in partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank and Fry’s Kroger Waste Not Initiative, which distributed over 3,250 meals with over 2,000 volunteer hours. “The Singletons have found that, in many cases, the family home becomes a constant reminder of the unfished 4 • January 2022 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
daily tasks, stressors and hardships these families face,” says Jody Body, Founder and Executive Director of The Singletons. “We believe that the H.U.B. will serve as a safe place for families to get in touch with other families and members of the community who can provide additional support.” The center also features a family room for parents and children to hang out, a garden where families can grow fresh produce along with offices for day-to-day operations and storage space for donated items. In addition, families will be able to purchase a personalized brick that will be placed in front of the H.U.B. The Singletons’ H.U.B. is a community dedicated to providing hope and support for single parent families affected by cancer. The organization provides services to a growing population of single parents who are battling cancer or have children battling cancer.

We want to be the ultimate one-stop-shop for health and wellness in the North valley.” While Inner Vibes only caters to adults and teens now, the hope is that soon they
will be able to include kids’ yoga and other related wellness options. “Right now, we are just a small studio with limited space, and we are doing everything can to ensure people feel comfortable and relaxed. Our classes are more hands-on with adjusting and aligning the body with breath, and therefore are taking our growth one step at a time.” Inner Vibes Yoga is accepting new students but recommends that they sign

City News The Latest on the Drought Pipeline Project By Athena Sanchez, City of Phoenix Water Services Department AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT, THE CITY OF PHOENIX BROKE GROUND ON THE DROUGHT PIPELINE PROJECT IN EARLY 2021. Along State Route 51, drivers can see the 66-inch diameter steel pipes lined up, waiting for construction crews to bury them underground. In some areas, the pipes will be nearly 40 feet deep.

Construction for the project continues on Bell Road from 31st Street to 32nd Street. Work is also underway near the future booster pump station site at 31st Street, south of Bell Road. The pipeline construction will continue south on 31st Street to Greenway Road, and the work is currently active at 31st Street through Marconi Avenue. Work will require intermittent closing of 32nd Street from Greenway Road to Thunderbird Road; project managers will notify residents and business owners in the area about the closures. Construction on 32nd Street from Thunderbird Road to Cactus Road will be restricted to one lane in most places to accommodate the work. Northern Avenue between Cheryl Drive and 26th Street is limited to local access, while crews tunnel under State Route 51. Motorists will be able to access 32nd Street and 26th Street. As always, drivers are encouraged to be cautious near constructions zones. The Colorado River is the primary water source for over 400,000 customers in North Phoenix. The Drought Pipe-
line will ensure all customers have access to safe, reliable, clean drinking water during future times of shortage on the Colorado River.The new pipeline will have the capability of moving 75 million gallons of Salt and Verde River water a day from the city’s southern area to the north. StretchLab to Open Nearby Location in First Quarter of 2022 STRETCHLAB, AN ASSISTED STRETCH CONCEPT THAT AIMS TO IDENTIFY TIGHTNESS AND IMBALANCES IN THE BODY BY CREATING A CUSTOMIZED STRETCHING ROUTINE FOR ITS CLIENTS, WILL OPEN A NEW NEARBY LOCATION AT 4740 E. City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services’ Department in Need of Public Input Residents have until January 17 to provide feedback online DO YOU HAVE IDEAS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD AND CITY? Now here’s your chance to be heard.
Each year, the city will implement those strategies identified through the five-year Consolidated Plan through an Annual Action Plan.
The city of Phoenix is commencing with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) FY 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan. Every five years, the city of Phoenix partners with the community to develop a strategic Consolidated Plan. The plan defines strategies to address housing, community development needs, and current market conditions for the city of Phoenix to make informed decisions on an estimated $135 million in HUD grant funding. Grants include the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Home Investment Partnership (HOME), Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA), and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG).
Residents’ input is needed to help identify and prioritize community needs and the best methods and programs to address those needs for the 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan. The city of Phoenix is conducting a survey to obtain community and stakeholder input relative to the priorities identified through the 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan. The survey will be open through January 17 and can be accessed at phoenix.gov/ yourvoice. In early March, a virtual public hearing will be held to
share the results of the 2022-2023 survey and provide an opportunity for public input on the draft 2022-2023 Annual Action Plan. The myPHX311 app is optimized for smartphones but can also be used on tablets. With this new digital interactive experience, residents can send reports directly to the City’s website. The app allows community members to provide city staff with pictures, videos, descriptions, and the location when reporting an issue. “The launch of this application ensures our residents, business owners and community members have quick, easy access to city services,” says City Manager Jeff Barton. “Now that much of our lives has gone virtual, it’s important to have a city services app that makes sharing and retrieving information easy for everyone.”

Users can search job postings, review street closures and neighborhood programs. Showing monthly in The ROCK Community Center parking lot (located at 13625 N. 32nd Street), the pop-up marketplace has gained popularity with Saturday morning shoppers.
The marketplace takes place monthly on the third Saturday, and remaining 2022 dates include: January 15, February 19, March 19, and April 16 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. New work is always available, and new vendors join with a fresh take on their specialties. You’ll find unique jewelry, woodworking items, laser engraving, homemade jams, pepper sauce, yard art,
rustic décor, beautiful wood pens, knitted and crochet items, and more. When available, the Southwest Diamond Duo entertains at the event. One of the qualities of the craft show is that it is kept small, and each local vendor has a unique product. The corner of 32nd Street and Thunderbird has come a long way. The “People’s Open” Tees Off Next Month; Tickets on Sale Now

THE 2022 WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN WILL TAKE PLACE FEBRUARY 7-13 AT TPC SCOTTSDALE. “The People’s Open” has been named the Tournament of the Year by the PGA TOUR four times in the past seven years to acknowledge the tournament’s legendary status as one the most unique events in golf. The 2022 edition will mark the 87th playing of the event and the 13th with Waste Management as title sponsor. A field of 132 players will vie for the $8.2 million purse, the $1,476,000 firstplace check, and 500 FedExCup points. PGA TOUR members have until 5 p.m. on Friday, February 4, to commit to play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Eligible players are assigned one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on TOUR. The field will continue to change as players with higher priority rankings commit to play in the Open. Tournament Chairman Dr. Michael Golding recently announced that defending champion and four-time Major winner Brooks Koepka and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama are the latest to commit to play in the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The duo, who are both twotime WM Phoenix Open winners and currently rank in the Top 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings, have combined to win four WM Phoenix Open titles in the last seven years. Hello Neighbor! HI, MY NAME IS... Samantha Ford, but most know me by Sam. I’VE LIVED IN NORTH 32ND ALMOST FIVE YEARS AND I LOVE IT BECAUSE… The sense of community is just so amazing and like nothing I’ve ever experienced my entire time living in Arizona. It’s like living in a hidden little gem of awesomeness and it has so much to offer someone—from our quiet neighborhoods, great schools, and a variety of so many wonderful businesses that are locally owned by many neighbors of our community. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… A cup or two of coffee with some whip cream to start my day. Anyone that’s had a conversation with me can usually tell if it’s been more than one cup! Then it’s off to be an adult and run my local fitness studio, Jabz Boxing. I get to act like a big kid who gets to have fun and teach HITT and boxing style group fitness classes to awesome people. Currently we offer both co-ed and women-only classes. Being a bereaved mom, we also support the parents of Helping Parents Heal by offering free classes

to help them move through the grieving process. We just celebrated our eight-year anniversary, and we couldn’t have made it through the pandemic without the support of our loyal client base and amazing staff. MY FAMILY… Consists of my boys Andrew, Matthew and Michael, and two little fur balls, Shadow and Coco. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IS… The sunlight. I love sitting outside every day in the warmth of the sun and just letting it soak on my face and body. It really has the power to shift any somber mood I may be in and just helps recharge my spirits and fuels my vitality. I can’t imagine living anywhere that doesn’t have continuous sunlight like we have here in Arizona. MY FAVORITE MOVIE I COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY… I have fond memories of watching Toy Story countless times with my kids. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… A plastic surgeon. I think it is because it fascinated me that you could have the
ability to change someone’s appearance, and I am a twin and really wasn’t a big fan of someone else looking like me.

Is 2022 The Year You Will Make The Move? By Louisa Ward, Realtor
I
constantly get asked where I think the real estate market will be in the next few years, so here’s my educated opinion based on careful and thorough study of the current and future Arizona economy and housing statistics. PRICES WILL LIKELY CONTINUE TO GO UP The Phoenix Metro housing market has seen pricing go through the roof in the past 18 months with appreciation rates at 20% to 24% and a few spots as high as 35%. Prices will likely continue to go up, just given the fact that there’s such limited supply out there, but it can’t continue to appreciate at that same pace. I believe that pricing will stabilize and will come down to a steadier growth of 6% to 13% per year. Economists are leaning toward the lower end percent growth. INVENTORY WILL NOT NORMALIZE, AND WE WILL REMAIN IN A STATE OF LOW INVENTORY The demand continues to be high due to nearly 300 people a day moving to Arizona and the majority are coming to the Phoenix Metro area. However, there may be some minimal relief as surveys have shown that Baby Boomers are ready to start listing their homes. The Baby Boomers are age group 57 to 75 years old. The zip code 85028 has approximately 5,528 residents in this age group and 85032 has 11,993. This age group is looking to downsize, move closer to family, maybe move into a 55+ active living community or possibly an assistive living community. Those homes will be sucked
into the extremely low inventory and will take minimal pressure off the buyers.

MORTGAGE RATES WILL CREEP BACK UP Mortgage rates will increase from the record lows we’ve seen as the federal government begins to taper purchases of mortgage-backed bonds (mortgage interest rates loosely follow the yield on the 10-year treasury). In conclusion, interest rates are increasing, prices are still increasing, and inventory remains low. No one should be waiting to make the move. It is not getting better, and with interest rates slated to increase, affordability is getting worse. If you are waiting for the “crash” to make a move, it may be a long time coming. “The signs provide a uniform and attractive feel when you enter the neighborhood, and that enhances the pride in the neighborhood,” says Christine Lyons, block watch leader for Heritage Heights. “And when you have pride and a unified community, I think it’s a safer and stronger community.”
The sign toppers have been placed by Heritage Heights, Mountain Preserve, Mountain Estates, and Paradise Gardens Block Watch groups.
The signs, each including the name of the block watch group and a design determined by the particular neighborhood, have been installed over the past year and were funded using the Neighborhood Block Watch Grant Program offered by the City of Phoenix.

orth 32nd residents might notice a new sight on the way home. Thanks to a grant from the City of Phoenix, four local neighborhoods have added sign toppers to their street signs, identifying the locations of their block watch groups.
“The block watch signs remind people that you’re working as a community to help your neighbors, to keep your eyes out for each other,” Lyons says. “And looking out for each other becomes part of your daily routine.” Over the past several months, the signs have received a warm welcome from North 32nd communities and a positive response on social media. “We’ve received a lot of comments on how nice they look and thanking us for doing it,” Lyons says, adding that it was the city that encouraged
the block watch groups to apply for the grant that paid for the sign toppers. “I think the block watch group provides an opportunity for us to enhance safety and quality of life within our neighborhood,” Lyons shares. “And the City of Phoenix offers funding to neighborhood groups to provide resources and create new and innovative programs and activities designed to prevent and reduce crime in the neighborhood.” Jenna-Lee Neff is a freelance journalist, digital audience analyst, and public relations professional. HOW DOES A BLOCK WATCH WORK? A Block Watch works when you and your neighbors use simple techniques to deter, delay and detect crime, and improve the quality of life for the neighborhood. Being aware of criminal activity can help in keeping your neighborhood
safe. Promptly reporting all criminal or suspicious activity to 9-1-1 or Crime Stop at 602-262-6151 helps the police assist you in promoting a safe and healthy neighborhood. Local Mural Inspires Community to “Climb On” By Ava Hiniker Photo by Ryan David Bengford

uralist Taylor Victoria made her mark on 32nd Street after recently crafting a mural for the Black Rock Bouldering Gym. Located just south of Shea Boulevard, the gym contains a plethora of sizable workout spaces and rock climbing walls that contribute to the building’s large size. Each wall is blessed with a substantial scale that begs for attention as a gifted artist’s canvas. With paintbrush in hand and mind set on a goal, Victoria got to work. “Murals are a great way to display who you are in a visually appealing way,” says Victoria. “When executed intentionally, it can serve as excellent marketing for your business, too! The art often draws a lot of attention and may even become a destination site. In other words, ‘If you paint it, they will come!’” The mural took an astonishing 60 hours to paint, in addition to the time spent designing and planning. Standing 22-feet tall and 51-feet wide on the northern wall of the gym, the monumental masterpiece takes inspiration from a classic Arizona landscape. Victoria uses bright teal skies to contrast the earthy orange tones, making up the painted desert rocks. She inserts an occasional Saguaro cactus to tie the scene together in the eyes of every native Arizonian. The mural also features bold white writing that simply reads “Climb On,” serving both as a loveable nod to the home of the piece and a supportive mantra that promotes perseverance and determination. Altogether, the eyecatching mural can transport its audience into the colorful, serene landscape it depicts and works as a perfect spot for any social media worthy selfie. Thanks to Victoria, the community now has an extra dash of bright flair and incredible scenery. “We felt we had a unique opportunity to add some color to a fairly ‘blank slate’ of a wall, and Taylor’s incredibly positive attitude and beautiful approach to her artwork made it an easy decision to partner with her on a mural
for the North 32nd community,” says Chris Dodge, owner and founder of Black Rock Bouldering Gym. “So many of our neighbors frequently pass our facility on their daily commute, we wanted something that complemented the naturally beautiful backdrop of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve while motivating and inspiring our community to ‘Climb On’ when things get tough. At the very least, we hope it helps people smile as they pass by.” This is hardly Victoria’s first mural as she began her art career when she was just 19. “I had a strong connection to art ever since I was a child,” she says. “My art journey is something that continually brings me joy. I never thought it would be something I could make a full-time career out of and I feel very fortunate to be living out my passion each and every day.” Victoria uses this passion presently to design all kinds of portraits, shirt decals and henna tattoos. However,
murals have proven to be the most unique in what they can achieve for local businesses like Black Rock Bouldering Gym. Though some murals are initially designed as ways to support local businesses, all of Victoria’s art pieces can do so much more by adding an extra dash of beauty to spaces and communities across the Valley. The awards recognize and honor the outstanding achievements of young people, enhance the perception of youth, and raise community awareness of their positive contributions.

I
t’s a new year! As the new year rolls in we may be thinking about our resolutions and health goals for 2022. I always look forward to a fresh health start by a simple and effective detoxification protocol. This detox can include diet modifications, immune system support and gentle cleansing, and can provide a jump start to optimal health for the entire year. Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from the body. A healthy functioning body has the capacity to handle a certain level of toxins day to day, however, there are many factors that can hinder our body’s ability to detoxify and support a healthy immune system. Toxins can be found in our environment, products we use on our skin and clothes, as well as food we ingest. An overload of toxins can weigh down our immune system and accumulate in our cells. This accumulation negatively affects our immune system and can lead to chronic illnesses, such as autoimmune diseases, allergies, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and skin conditions.

HEALTHY DETOX/CLEANSING TIPS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH • Drink filtered water and drink at least half your body weight in ounces each day. • Eat organic and fresh when possible. • Include whole foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, healthy oils, seeds, and healthy fats. • Eliminate sugar, refined foods, processed foods, canned foods, salt, coffee, cured meats, and organ meats. • Avoid alcohol and nicotine. • If you have food sensitivities, it is important to eliminate them during any detox. Doing this will help decrease inflammation and allow the body to detox more efficiently.
• Consume dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and dandelion greens. These support the liver and help promote healthy digestion. • Ensure that you have regular daily bowel movements. This will aid in the elimination of toxins. If you suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, it is important to find the root cause and support the digestive system. • During any detox, regular exercise of at least 30 minutes per day is beneficial. It does not have to be intense, even just walking can be beneficial. • Take the time to breathe, we often forget this part. Take breath breaks often and breathe deeply through the nose and exhale through the mouth. • Keep sinuses and lungs healthy during cleansing, daily neti pot use or nasal rinses can be helpful. • Sleep! Your body needs proper rest. Seven to eight hours of sleep nightly will help facilitate the cleansing. Cleansing/detoxing can help the body restore itself and help maintain excellent health and wellness. There are many different detoxification protocols. It is always best to check with your doctor to see which one would be the safest and most beneficial for you. When you establish your Trust, one of the most important decisions to make is who will be your successor Trustee.

IN THEATERS House Of Gucci The story of how Patrizia Reggiani fell in and out of love with—and then murdered—her husband and heir to the Gucci company, Maurizio. Ridley Scott can add comedy to his list of genres he can nail. House Of Gucci is a satire about the rich and how insecure they are, and how easily any taste of greed can corrupt. This is complemented by clever filmmaking choices and the cast. The performances range from chewing as much scenery as possible (Lady Gaga and Jared Leto) and playing it totally straight (Adam Driver and Jeremy Irons), and the contrast works well. It’s also nice to see how Scott gives this film the expensive look it needs, filled with overindulgence. A funny film, even if it feels bloated, but one could argue that fits for the film. BENEDETTA A nun begins a forbidden affair while

receiving visions from who she believes is Jesus. It’s hard to explain something like Benedetta without putting people off. It’s well done, with Paul Verhoeven making the most of the explicit subtext and visuals to support it. The actors convince you of their madness, hypocrisy, and desire, and Verhoeven loves to make you hate them in all their explicit glory. But it’s subject matter is one that will turn off and offend, or even just simply disgust. It’s a movie that one must approach cautiously—it’s not unrated for nothing.
ON NETFLIX The Power of The Dog A man begins a game of psychological war with his brother’s new wife. Silence can be killer, and Jane Campion, in her first movie in 12 years, uses it perfectly. Each third of the film focuses on a different character and how they affect everyone, and slowly but surely, their personalities change and deteriorate. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst are the standouts here, both
strangely swapping personalities over the course of the film. The dark tone contrasts well with the lovely but still barren western frontier presented. Jonny Greenwood continues to impress with his tense score. Quite an accomplishment.
ON AMC+ Silent Night A family gathers for what may be their final Christmas dinner. Silent Night, for most of its runtime, is great. The dark humor mixed with sincere family drama is a great showcase for firsttime director Camille Griffin. How the various cast members show their emotions, whether subdued or outward, makes these characters real. Griffin’s script also does a great job at hinting at the main plot without telling us for the first twenty minutes. But the film unfortunately falls apart in its last ten minutes, rushing through its conclusion, our characters collapsing suddenly, and a final moment that is incredibly sudden and unearned plays out. It
almost ruins what could have been a new holiday classic. It’s still worth a watch but be prepared for it to not stick the landing.
