I

t’s been two years! Can you believe it? Maybe you know our story, and maybe we are newly ‘friends’…

January 2017, on a whim, we decided to take on a local newspaper called the Deer Valley Times. Did we have publishing experience? No, why would we? Jumping in head first, our first official issue on our own was in February and it looked amazing, even if we do say so ourselves. Some quick changes to distribution, a couple of new sales people and BAM, we were off to the races! So there was one.

By summer 2017 we were in the mode of, ‘If one is good, then two would be great!’ Isn’t that the way all businesses work? So was born the North Tatum Times. The community adopted this paper here so fast our heads were spinning with excitement! Now we had two.

A little less than a year later, we were introduced to a lovely community by the name of North 32nd. This com-

munity was amazing and just in dire need for a way to communicate all of the new things happening between the merchants, government and residents.

Welcome to the world, North 32nd News. And then we were three.

A few months after that came a knock at our door…’What would you think of a quiet community up in North Scottsdale?’ After some research and a few meetings, there was no way to say no. On came Scottsdale North News. That made four.

What would be next? Could we wait for another adventure? Of course not!

A new area was brought to our attention, Scottsdale’s golden zip code.

So welcome to the family our newest paper, The Scottsdale Standard.

Its inaugural issue is this month and already it’s been a huge success. This new paper makes us a fabulous five.

Recently Heidi Koffman, who we initially purchased the Deer Valley Times from, has rejoined our team as our Director of Sales and we couldn’t

be more excited. Things have really come full circle in such a short period of time.

for sure, but we are eyeing some new communities that are just itching for a new way to come together as one….

Our five papers direct mail to over 100,000 homes and businesses each month, spanning from the I-17 to Scottsdale Road, and from Shea Boulevard to Carefree Highway. We’ve seen communities brought together with good old-fashioned communication and support of your neighbor.

Even our own family is involved.

Our oldest son Anthony writes our movie reviews, and our youngest son Gavin has helped deliver papers to rack locations. And of course, myself and my husband have both written articles, sold ads, delivered papers, held networking groups and everything else needed to make a family business successful.

CONSTRUCTION TO START SOON ON LOOP 101 EXPANSION IN NORTH VALLEY

VALLEY RESIDENTS CAN EXPECT AN IMPROVED COMMUTE WHILE DRIVING THE LOOP 101 BETWEEN PIMA ROAD IN SCOTTSDALE AND THE INTERSTATE 17 INTERCHANGE. New lanes will be added in each direction on this stretch of the heavily-traveled portion of the Loop 101.

According to Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), the project will address bottlenecks along the Loop 101 at Interstate 17, Cave Creek Road, State Route 51 and Tatum Boulevard. On average, residents in the metropolitan Phoenix area currently spend 35 hours per year sitting in traffic.

While these lane expansions should help traffic congestion initially, officials expect this portion to get busier in years to come as the Phoenix metro area continues to grow. Phoenix is currently the sixth largest city in the U.S. and home to 1.5 million people. The greater metropolitan area ranks 11th nationwide with 4.7 million and shows no signs of slowing that growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Maricopa County was the fastest-growing county in the country in 2017.

A critical component to this project, the ADOT Noise Team works to mitigate noise for federal projects as required by the National Environmental Policy Act. For more than 20 years, Arizona highways and city streets have been resurfaced with rubberized asphalt as they reach their normal life expectancy. Initially known for helping reduce the disposal of used tires, rubberized asphalt has only recently been recognized for its traffic noise reduction.

The project is expected to start in early 2019 with a planned completion date sometime in early 2021.

The plans according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) include the following improvements:

According to ADOT’s Quiet Pavement and Noise Program website, rubberized asphalt consists of regular asphalt paving mixed with rubber from used tires that would otherwise end up in landfills.

Rubberized asphalt has the benefit of being smoother and quieter. Noise readings have shown the rubberized asphalt generally reduces tire noise by an average of 4 decibels. Approximately 1,500 tires are used for every lane-mile of rubberized paving, which can put a major dent in the 2 million used tires that are generated annually in Maricopa County.

• Ramps and frontage road connection improvements at 10 locations along the freeway • One additional general-purpose lane between Pima Road and Interstate 17 in each direction • Auxiliary lane between Cave Creek Road and 7th Street in each direction • Drainage and technological improvements • Installing rubberized asphalt overlay to reduce noise • Constructing noise or retaining walls where needed • Improvements to pavement markings

In early 2019, ADOT is expected to hold informational meetings and two community open houses, one in Phoenix and one in Scottsdale, prior to the start of construction. WAYMO LAUNCHES SELF-DRIVING RIDE HAILING SERVICE ON DECEMBER 5, WAYMO INTRODUCED ITS COMMERCIAL SELF-DRIVING SERVICE, WAYMO ONE, IN THE METRO PHOENIX AREA.

Waymo One will first be offered to hundreds of early riders who have been using Waymo’s self-driving technology since April 2017 as part of their early rider program. This diverse and passionate group has provided important feedback directly to Waymo’s research and product teams and has used Waymo for a variety of activities. Some took rides to their local college for classes or commuted to work and high school.

Others used the service to get to book club each week, connect to busses, or try new restaurants on date night.

“Their feedback along the way helped refine the technology and design features that met their needs,” said

Waymo CEO, John Krafcik. “Based on their comments we worked on ways to streamline pickups, made it easier to contact support for questions and began operating our service at all times of the day.”

The early rider program will continue as a way for a select group of individuals to give ongoing feedback. They’ll help test early features before those new capabilities graduate to Waymo One, where they can be accessed by the public over time.

So, how does Waymo One work?

Riders are given access to the app which will be available on iOS and Android devices. They can use the app to call a self-driving vehicle 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Waymo One will be available across several cities in the Metro Phoenix area. Riders will see price estimates before they accept the

trip based on factors like the time and distance to their destination.

Waymo One riders can also invite friends and family in the car with them. Up to three adults and a child can ride, and each vehicle comes equipped with one child safety car seat.

During the ride, all of the key trip details will display on the in-car screens as well as the app, and support will be front and center. With the tap of a button on the in-car console and screens, or through the Waymo app, riders can connect instantly to a rider support agent to ask questions.

These channels will become even more important as Waymo transitions to fully

driverless rides. At the start, Waymotrained drivers will be riding along to supervise the vehicles for rider comfort and convenience.

“There’s a long journey ahead,” Krafcik said, “but we believe that Waymo One will make the roads safer and easier for everyone to navigate.”

HUBS OF CHANGE IN NORTH 32ND NEIGHBORHOOD

WHEN SUPERVISOR GATES ENGAGED THE COMMUNITY AND THE URBAN LAND INSTITUTE (ULI) TO IDENTIFY WAYS TO REVITALIZE THE NORTH 32ND COMMUNITY, THE MOMENTUM AROUND NORTH 32ND WAS JUST IN ITS INFANCY. Rebecca Golden, former owner of 32 Shea and current owner of Lovecraft, created a catalyst for the evolution of change that has occurred at 32nd and Shea.

When I arrived in Phoenix five years ago, Walgreens was not yet a freestanding building at 32nd and Shea.

The Paradise Hills shopping center was just beginning to take shape. In the midst of a home tour with my then realtor and a need for snack, I saw a sign that said coffee, food and drinks. From the very first coffee and chocolate chip cookies, I found a place that has been pivotal during my time in Phoenix.

A few months later, I attended a meeting during the planning stages for what is now View 32, where I learned about the efforts to enhance the North 32nd community Prior to my move to Arizona, I worked for a residential in-fill builder in the Bay Area where I learned that to effect positive change, you need to put forth good effort to make it happen. From that meeting, I slowly became more involved in the revitalization.

So, what is the biggest challenge with taking on revitalizing one of the largest neighborhoods in Phoenix?

Time. It takes time. To ensure success, we focused first on the momentum that was already building at 32nd and Shea with the full intention of expanding the hubs of change to the other major intersections of the North 32nd community.

Arizona Sunrays choose to reinvest in our community and help expand the momentum to Greenway.

Now we are lucky that Arizona Helping Hands chose to invest in the former Sunrays space with a great new space geared towards helping area foster families in our community.

We coined the term “hubs of change” as it was a nearly impossible task to take on the entire community at once. We are now eagerly focusing on the Cactus and Thunderbird intersections with the opening of Lovecraft at Cactus and the new Vasa gym at Thunderbird.

LONGHORN STEAKHOUSE WORKS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER IN PHOENIX MANY PEOPLE IN THE PHOENIX COMMUNITY WORRY ABOUT WHERE THEIR NEXT MEAL WILL COME FROM. LONGHORN STEAKHOUSE IS WORKING TO GIVE THOSE IN NEED SOME RELIEF.

To date, the LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants in the Phoenix area have donated more than 259,200 pounds of food to local nonprofits. Locally, LongHorn restaurants regularly donate to nonprofits like Waste Not and St. Mary’s Food Bank.

Every week, the Phoenix LongHorn Steakhouse on E. Cactus Road gathers unused, surplus food and prepares it for donation to Waste Not. Items like steak, fish, potatoes, honey wheat bread and vegetables are donated.

Waste Not is a nonprofit that collects excess perishable food from local businesses and deliver the food the same day to more than 100 diverse agencies that feed the hungry including schools, after-school programs, daycare centers, rehabilitation centers, transition homes and senior facilities.

“Hunger remains a key issue,” said Steven Lewis, Managing Partner of the location in Phoenix.

“LongHorn Steakhouse Harvest gives us the opportunity to give back to our neighbors by donating quality steaks and other food items to Waste Not. Our team takes immense pride in knowing we’re making a difference.”

Like the restaurant in Phoenix, LongHorn Steakhouse locations nationwide participate in the Harvest program. Since 2003, LongHorn’s family of more than 500 restaurants have donated more than 19.4 million pounds of food to local community food banks through the program, equating to 16.1 million meals.

LongHorn Steakhouse is part of Darden Restaurants, whose 1,700 restaurants nationwide participate in the Harvest food donation program. In addition to the Harvest program, the Darden Foundation recently donated $2 million to Feeding America to further hunger relief efforts. UNIQUE EARLY LEARNING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCED UCP OF CENTRAL ARIZONA IS INVITING THE COMMUNITY TO VISIT ON JANUARY 10, 2019 FROM 5 TO 6PM TO SHOWCASE THEIR FIVE-STAR QUALITY FIRST RATED EARLY LEARNING CENTER (ELC) and the Laura Dozer Therapy Clinic both located at the Laura Dozer Center at 1802 West Parkside Lane, Phoenix, Arizona 85027.

The Early Learning Center at UCP serves all children ages six weeks to five years old in an inclusive environment with approximately 70 percent of the children in the ELC developing without delays. The things that set the ELC apart are the adult-child ratio and staff knowledge in areas of child development, with screening and tools for assisting all children at all levels of development. The preparation they receive is designed to transition the children to elementary school, with attention to the developmental needs of all children.

3 TIPS FOR LEADING A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURIAL LIFE

he life of an entrepreneur – or at least the idea behind that life – can seem enticing to just about everyone.

In reality, Strauss says, most successful entrepreneurs have a voice inside them imploring them to wait, to not take that chance. The difference between them and others is they ignore that inner voice. “In my career, I tried to prepare myself as best I could for my next step, but I always had to take a leap of faith to some degree,” Strauss says. “There’s never going to be perfect time or situation that is a guaranteed win. For any significant opportunity, there is always a risk.”

But why do some people follow through on such visions with great fanfare and success, while others fail miserably – or never follow through at all?

“There’s just this mindset that the very best entrepreneurs have that positions them for success when others around them are struggling and unable to stay the course,” says Peter J. Strauss (www.peterjstrauss.com), an attorney, entrepreneur and author of the upcoming book The Accidental Life.

team respects one another and holds each other accountable – much like a family. “If you are in a leadership position, it’s up to you to instill this mindset and to be the role model for it in your company,” he says. He even discovered that the business family he created as an entrepreneur helped make him a better parent. “If I don’t set clear goals and expectations at work, I can’t be disappointed or surprised when my team falls short,” he says. “The same holds true at home.

Framing expectations as a dialogue will make your family and your team feel valued.”

“Ultimately, no matter the obstacles, entrepreneurs just find a way to persevere and get the job done,” Strauss says. “But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. There are real risks involved. People rarely see all the ins and outs and ups and downs of what it takes to reach a place where you feel real success.”

HIKING WITH KIDS IN ARIZONA A

s Arizonans, we love to hit the trails and enjoy the beauty of our desert environment. Hiking with our kids is a fun way to spend time and get outside, but it is critical to be well prepared so you can make the hike enjoyable and safe for your children before you go. As experienced hikers, here are a few of the things we have learned first hand that can help make your hike a good one for both you and your little ones.

WATER, WATER, WATER This is the most important rule for all hikers, especially in the desert. Realize that even the higher elevations and tall pines in Arizona are still desert, which means the climate is very dry. Experts recommend drinking one gallon of water per person, per day. When we hike we fill our water packs to the top, no matter how far we’re going, and we refill at every water station.

When we asked what kinds of food to give our then six-year old on a 2-3 mile day hike to keep up her energy, he said you don’t always need to buy pre-packaged solutions. Our daughter is tall and lean, so she has very few fat reserves to keep her moving during what most adults may consider a short hike. She goes from full steam to “carry me” in about 2 minutes flat. The trick is to make sure she eats plenty of small snacks along the way.

There are some great pre-packaged “power bars” out there that work well, but the pickles and peanut butter recommendation is a great idea, too. Pickles provide quick-acting electrolytes, which regulate nerve and muscle function and hydration, and peanut butter provides a good source of healthy monounsaturated fat and protein. We tried this weird-sounding combination in our own taste-test and liked it! It tastes a little like the peanutty sauces used in a lot of Thai food. Not too bad.

EVERYONE CARRIES THEIR OWN PACK (UNLESS THE CHILD IS THE PACK) This is a good rule for everyone to follow for all hiking and backpacking trips. Don’t let one person carry all of the food, water or supplies, even if they are the “strongest” person, or the most knowledgeable. You never know when an accident will happen to you or someone else, so it’s best for everyone to be prepared to take care of themselves, at least until help arrives.

This applies to kids, too, to a certain degree. We have our daughter carry her own water pack (an absolute must) so she can drink as she needs it. The pack includes her own snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, and small first aid kit. You don’t need to carry a lot, but be sure to have the basics on hand for each person on your hiking adventure.

WEAR THE RIGHT GEAR This is important advice for the happiness and comfort of everyone in your hiking party. There are shirts, pants, shoes and socks made specifically for hiking and other outdoor activities. I highly recommend you use them! You don’t have to spend a fortune of new clothes (there are many discount versions available and most stores have frequent sales), but our experience has taught us that you will be miserable if your gear is not up to the task.

Specifically, do not wear jeans. Ever. They are heavy and chafing, and just a bad idea all around for hiking.

A good pair of hiking pants or lightweight exercise pants that will withstand movement are worth every penny. Wear clothing that is made to breath, wick away sweat, dry quickly and be comfortable. And be

careful with your footwear. Hiking shoes are made to be comfortable while tackling tough, rugged terrain.

This is important for both adult feet and little growing feet. Don’t spend a fortune (your kids will grow out of their gear quickly, anyway), but look for sales and check online for discounts. Hand-me-downs and gently used gear are also great options.

PACE YOURSELVES AND BE PREPARED TO STOP FREQUENTLY Kids not only have short attention spans and small bladders, they also wear out quickly. Make the hike fun for your youngsters by making stops along the path. Look for wildlife, tell your kids about special plants and flowers, find big sticks and funny rocks.

Here in the Sonoran Desert, look for weird and funny cactus shapes, petroglyphs on rocks, and guess what kind of animal (or insect!) lives in the holes you find along the trail.

Take a breath and smell the desert air. It’s like no other scent in the world and one of the best things about hiking in Arizona. And be prepared for possible potty breaks along the trail. Have everyone go before you leave, but don’t be surprised if you need to have a quick lesson about squatting behind a tree or bush (and we highly recommend taking plenty of tissues and wet wipes, just in case)!

ur pets are dear members of our families, and we want to treat them with the ultimate kindness and love! Here are some things that pet owners should know; advice that ultimately makes it easier for us groomers to care for your beloved furry friends.

These five tips below will not only help us, but it will give your pet a better overall experience during their grooming session as well. We’re all in this together – let’s help lend a paw to one another!

1. PREPARE YOUR PUP EARLY Groomers love ALL dogs! Sure, we’ve seen it all, but it makes our jobs easier if you’ve already been conditioning your pet for grooming. Work with your new pup to get them used to the idea of being held and having their limbs moved around a bit. Get them used to water, combs, nail clippers, etc.

Naturally, some dogs will always be more anxious than others– that’s okay!

We just ask that you try and ease that anxiety a bit.

Visit your groomer every 6-8 weeks and brush them in between visits. If you don’t do that, your furry friend may need a radical shave to get rid of knots and matted hair. Brush, brush, brush!

3. BE DETAILED WITH YOUR REQUESTS When you drop your dog off at the groomer, please be detailed! We want to ensure there’s no miscommunication when it comes to length and styling.

However, it is important to listen to your groomer’s recommendations. Coming in with a photo found online doesn’t always mean that will work for your particular dog, but you surly can ask.

Come in with questions and we’ll be happy to help find the best grooming solution for your precious pup.

4. YOUR ANXIETY WON’T HELP It’s true – your dog can sense when you’re feeling anxious! If you’re anxious about dropping your furry friend off at the vet, chances are that their anxiety will rise as well. Try and relax when bringing your pup in for a nice grooming. We promise to care for your dog as if it’s our very own. The calmer you are, the better the entire process will be.

5. WE ARE NOT YOUR VET If you have questions or concerns about grooming your dog, great! We are your people! However, groomers are not substitutes for vets. We ask that you take your pup for regular check-ups.

If they’re unwell, bringing them to the groomer’s will put other pups at risk – we don’t want that!

ne of the best things about living in Arizona is ready access to one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the Grand Canyon. Grand Canyon National Park is one of our very favorite places to visit, all year round. On February 26, 2019, the Grand Canyon will celebrate it’s centennial – it was designated a National Park 100 years ago in 1919! Every season offers something different at the canyon, but this year will also host a many special centennial events.

You can get a new perspective of the majesty of the Canyon and its surrounding wilderness with every visit.

Here is some advice for making the most of your visit to Grand Canyon National Park, every time you go.

IT TAKES MORE THAN ONE DAY TO REALLY SEE THE GRAND CANYON The South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is about 3-4 hours from Phoenix, depending on your location in the Valley of the Sun. The most direct route is straight north on I-17 to Flagstaff, but there are a few out of the way routes that can avoid traffic (roads that go through Williams or Winslow, for example). While it may be possible to make the journey in a day, you won’t be able do much more than see the Visitor’s Center and walk the rim for a short while.

And rest assured, there is a little something for everyone in Grand Canyon National Park. From sightseeing, history, science, walking and shopping to wildlife viewing, camping, biking and hiking for every skill level, the Grand Canyon has all of the best features available in a National Park and more.

For the casual sightseer, paved paths are handicap accessible and allow anyone and everyone to walk a few feet or a few miles along the South rim of the canyon and enjoy its spectacular views. As time passes and weather changes, you never see the same scene twice. The shadows and light shift with the sun throughout the day to paint a new picture from every angle. This is a photographer’s paradise.

hiking for every level of experience both along the rim and down into the canyon. Bikers will find paved bike paths throughout the park at the rim and campers can choose from a variety of campsites, whether using a tent, camper or RV.

VISITORS CENTERS AND THE RIM TRAIL The first destination visitors usually go to once they enter the park is the Visitor’s Center at Mather Point. This is probably the most busy point, and popular parking area, in the park, but it’s also a great place to learn more and help plan where you want to go next. The main Visitor Center, hosted by National Park Rangers, provides great educational displays, materials and movies, as well as a Junior Ranger Program that is fun and educational for kids. You can shop in the gift shop, rent bicycles or grab a quick sandwich or drink at the coffee shop. It’s also a hub for the free shuttle system.

Other visitor centers along the Rim trail include the Yavapai Geology Museum and the Verkamp’s Visitor’s Center in the Grand Canyon Village.

Each stop provides a different focus on the Grand Canyon and gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about its history, geology, wildlife and preservation efforts. They are also great places to help your youngsters earn those Junior Ranger badges, so take the time to stop at each if you can.

GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, HERMIT’S REST AND DESERT VIEW The historic, much loved Grand Canyon Village is also a definite must-see during your visit to the Grand Canyon. The National Park buildings and lodges along the rim tell the story of what it took to develop the park into a place that everyone can see and visit today.

Fred Harvey, Mary Colter and the Kolb Brothers all left their mark on the park in their efforts to help tame the wild west and help people around the world experience the wonder that is the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon Village has restaurants, shopping and lodging, and is the nearest point to the train station, if you decide to visit the park via the Grand Canyon Railway.

The furthest points along the rim include Hermit’s Rest, which is accessible by shuttle, and Desert View. Both of these visitor’s centers are worth the trip and provide a new and different view of the Grand Canyon, but be sure to plan ahead if you decide to make the trek. The Hermit’s Rest can only be reached by shuttle, hiking or biking along the rim, about 7 miles from the Grand Canyon Village. Desert View is located at the east entrance of the park, about 25 miles down the road from the main village.

BE SURE TO PLAN AHEAD The busiest time of the year for

visitors at the Grand Canyon is summer. Memorial Day through Labor Day is the peak season, in line with vacation times around the world.

Temperatures are beautiful and mild in the spring, from March through May. Fall color is in abundance in October and November. The off-peak season is December through February but remember that you will encounter winter weather (and the hazards of cold, snow and ice along with it).

Be sure to check the Grand Canyon National Park website for current weather and traffic conditions before you go.

Once you get to Tusayun, the town that sits about a mile outside of the park entrance, you will find a variety of lodging and dining options if you haven’t planned ahead and made arrangements in the National Park.

It’s a great place to stay overnight and be sure to take advantage of the free shuttle that goes from the town into the park from March through November – it will save you a lot of parking headaches! Buy your park pass in advance to take advantage of this shuttle and save yourself time when entering the park.

MEDICARE HEALTH PLANS EXPLAINED

A

s most of you know, Medicare is a federal health insurance program for those 65 or older, certain individuals with a qualifying disability, or those of any age diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease.

Medicare helps pay for hospital stays (Part A) and doctor visits (Part B), but doesn’t cover everything. There are deductibles and co-insurance costs that are your responsibility. You may add coverage by enrolling in a private Medicare health plan.

There are two options for Medicare Health Plans. Your first option is to add coverage by enrolling in a Medicare Supplement and/or a Medicare Part D Drug Plan. Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans, have additional monthly premiums but help cover the deductibles and co-insurance costs that Medicare doesn’t cover.

Your second option is to choose a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C.) These plans combine your Part A hospital coverage, Part B doctor visits and usually include a Part D drug plan.

They offer financial protection by putting a cap on your out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage plans may also offer additional benefits that are not offered by Original Medicare.

So how do you know which to choose?

It is important to think about your needs.

How often do you visit your doctor?

Are the medications you take covered?

Do you have a particular doctor, hospital or pharmacy that you want to use?

Do you have health coverage through an employer, union or military? Would you rather pay less in monthly premiums or pay less out of pocket when you receive healthcare? Do you travel often?

A licensed agent can help you compare options and choose a plan that meets your individual needs.

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is your first chance to enroll in Medicare and choose the coverage you want.

This seven-month period begins three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month and three months after.

For those that qualify due to a disability, the seven-month window begins three months before your 25th month of receiving disability benefits.

It is wise to review your options annually. You can make changes to your coverage during the Medicare Annual Enrollment period from October 15 through December 7 every year. The changes you make during this time are effective on January 1.

If you’ve missed the Annual Enrollment Period, it might not be too late to make a change. There are Special Enrollment Periods for qualifying life events, such as leaving an employer plan or moving out of a plan service area. A complete list of these qualifying events can be found on Medicare.gov or by contacting a licensed agent.

Q. What is Naturopathic Medicine?

A. Naturopathic medicine is a specific type of primary health care that concentrates on whole patient wellness. The role of a Naturopathic physician is to diagnose, treat and prevent acute and chronic illnesses by identifying the underlying causes and removing barriers that may be impacting health, rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. This is accomplished together with patients by individualizing care and creating a healing environment.

Q. How is a Naturopathic Physician trained?

A. Naturopathic physicians (ND or NMD) are clinically trained primary care physicians who have attended a four-year, graduate level Naturopathic medical school. Education in basic sciences is similar to an MD, but a Naturopathic physician also studies holistic approaches to therapy with an emphasis on optimizing wellness and disease prevention. In addition to the standard medical curriculum, they study botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, psychology, and counseling. A naturopathic physi-

cian must take professional board exams in order to be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care general practice physician.

Q. Why see a Naturopathic Doctor?

A. 1. You want individualized treatment focusing on whole patient wellness: Naturopathic doctors are trained to treat the whole person. We take the time to listen and understand all factors that can affect your health. Initial visits in my office are up to an hour or more. All treatments are individualized and tailored to your goals, lifestyle and health needs.

CREED II

Adonis Creed’s relationships with his wife Bianca and mentor Rocky are tested when the latter’s former rival, Ivan Drago, comes back to the spotlight with his son, who challenges Creed.

Creed II is like a combo of Rocky 2 and 4, and like those films, it ups the clichés and traditions. However, here Steven Caple Jr. (who manages to keep within the world that Ryan Coogler created while having his own style) still gets you to take it seriously, and the cast are all great again. Dolph Lundgren also gets to humanize Ivan Drago some more, though I would have liked to see more insight into how his training routine and steroid use affected his character. More quick edits and handheld cam this time around, but it’s not distracting compared to other films that use both. Lastly, the ending still leaves you with the triumphant feel you want from a Rocky film.

THE FAVOURITE

Queen Anne, slowly losing her mind, becomes the center of a fight for power between cousins Sarah Churchill and Abigail Hill for control over who will be her “favourite”.

You would think a historical drama starring real people would mean Yorgos Lanthimos would dial back on the weirdness/disturbing nature of some of his prior films (The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, The Lobster, Dogtooth), but instead, it’s arguably the most strange and horrifying of his filmography, and I love it. Each of the three main leads are fantastic and show all sorts of range in their performances, from Olivia Colman doing needy and dominant, to Emma Stone going from desperate to vicious. Nicholas Hoult was absolutely hilarious here, and this was 28 • January 2019 • NORTH 32ND NEWS

probably my favorite performance from him.

Also, the camera angles and lenses used here sometimes gives off a warped image, as if reality is breaking for our three leads. In the hands of a more boring filmmaker, this could have been an average drama film. But thankfully, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara’s fantastic screenplay gets a great filmmaker.

ONCE UPON A DEADPOOL

Fred Savage is kidnapped by Deadpool, where he retells the story of Deadpool 2 in a family friendly way.

Okay look, this is basically DP 2 but with less swearing and no violence. If you don’t remember my review of that film, I didn’t like it, and I still don’t here. The only difference is the editing is a bit more clunky, and some of the gore removal is strange (including a scene involving a gun shooting through a hand). But Fred Savage makes it more tolerable, as he’s genuinely funny, and his chemistry with Deadpool works (plus it resists making too many Princess Bride jokes).

And hey, some of the cash from each ticket ($1) is donated to charity, so there is a good cause behind this film.

Ralph and Vanellope go into the internet to search for a replacement for the latter’s game after it’s broken.

This is a simple film and follows a lot of the traits you’ve seen from previous Disney films. However, it’s the themes of neediness and letting go that really make it work. Not everything goes back to normal by the end, giving a more real feel to a film with such a strange plot. The animation, as per usual, is an improvement over previous films. I also love how the internet is incorporated with things like spam and the ‘dark net’ used as plot points or characters. And yeah…even the princess scenes are funny. north32ndnews.com

Collectors worldwide continue to make well-built custom vehicles a part of their collection, like a ’63 Chevrolet Corvette Split Window Custom Coupe (Lot #1333) built by Jeff Hayes and American Speed Shop. Another hotly anticipated custom is the ’65 “SN65 Mustang” (Lot #1325), which masterfully integrates two unibody cars separated by 40 years of production.

“The golden era of ’60s and ’70s cars produced fantastic canvases for custom builds,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “When these vehicles rolled off the assembly line nearly 50 years ago, they were celebrated for their bold looks and

A ’61 Oldsmobile Starfire (preview) from the Bryan Frank Collection features lead bodywork, custom top, reupholstered white leather and chrome wire wheels. Showcased at the 2017 SEMA Show, a topless ’62 Cadillac roadster conversion (Lot #1041) has a full shaved exterior with a ʼ14 Cadillac CTS-V interior upholstered in leather and Alcantara suede. A ’65 Pontiac GTO convertible (preview) is powered by a Butler Performance 467ci bigblock engine and dressed in flawless

“Grandma’s Furyous” is a creative take on a ’66 Plymouth Fury Coupe (Lot #986). An original, rust-free body, the car was completely stripped and refinished and upgraded with an 500ci aluminum big block capable of cranking out 600 horsepower.

parcel of desert in north Scottsdale will magically transform into a vibrant arts community for 10 weeks as renowned artists from across the globe set up their studios and create original pieces of fine art in what has come to be known as one of Arizona’s best venues for collecting fine art.

The Arizona Fine Art EXPO begins Friday, January 11 and runs through Sunday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily under the “festive white tents” at 26540 N. Scottsdale Rd., on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Jomax Roads, next to MacDonald’s Ranch. Season passes cost $10; season passes for seniors and military are $8; and children under 12 are free. Parking is free.

The event features 124 patronfriendly artist studios within a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their passion, inspiration and techniques.

While the fine art show features several local artists, some artists

will travel from Israel, Zimbabwe, Russia, Korea, Mexico, Holland, China, Canada, Peru and throughout the United States to participate in the show.

Throughout the 10 weeks, artisans will sketch passionately in radiograph, pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; chisel, carve and shape stone; and saw and carve wood sculptures. Artists also will paint in all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; solder and weld jewelry; assemble mosaics, blow glass, plus fuse and kiln form glass sculptures. Art is for sale and commissions are welcomed.

Glass blowing classes will be held throughout the 10 weeks.

Patrons can also stroll throughout an enhanced two-acre sculpture garden, which will feature nearly 40 stone, metal, glass and mixed media sculptures.
