MAKES ITS MARK ON VALLEY OF THE SUN

M

ore than 500,000 military veterans reside in Arizona and many are still learning to cope with the everyday struggles of their transition back into society. Whether it’s dealing with medical costs not covered by military health insurance or adjusting to civilian life, out-of-pocket expenses and life changes can feel overwhelming for any former serviceman or servicewoman.

Members of the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), comprised of Marine Raiders, also face the challenge of being the newest to the United States Special Operations Command. Formed in 2006

by Donald Rumsfeld, Marine Raiders are the most elite of the country’s special operations teams. They are quiet professionals deployed around the world to execute complex operations in uncertain environments. You’d think coming home would give them peace of mind, but that’s not always the case. Being new also means fewer support systems exist.

This is why the 501c3 nonprofit Marine Raider Foundation stood up in 2012; not only to pay for the out-ofpocket expenses accrued by raiders and their families, but also with an emphasis on building personal, professional and family resiliency.

This past October, Marine Raider Foundation hosted its inaugural Valley of the Sun Gala in Phoenix. More than 150 people joined 16 Gold Star Family members (parents, siblings and spouses of military service members who died in combat) at the gala to raise $86,000.

MARSOC Foundation’s four main programs are raider support, including transition assistance, funding for award ceremonies and receptions, and funding for events

that focus on personal and professional resiliency; family resiliency support, including assisting raider families experiencing health and welfare challenges and with events that enhance personal and family resiliency; tragedy assistance and survivor support, including assistance for wounded, ill and injured raiders, Gold Star Families and funeral services and commemorations for MARSOC personnel; raider legacy and preservation support, including construction and upkeep of memorial structures and commemorative items, as well as funding for events that commemorate WWII and MARSOC Raiders. Since 2012, the Marine Raider Foundation has provided more than $4 million to World War II Marine Raiders, activeduty and former Marine Raiders and their families.

“The outpouring of support from the Phoenix community at the inaugural Valley of the Sun Gala sends a powerful message to the Marine Raider community that their service and sacrifice do not go unnoticed,” said Executive Director Andy Christian.

The Marine Raider Foundation has opportunities for volunteers throughout the year, including donating time or money to support veterans and their families Valleywide. Anyone interested in cultivating a deeper relationship with the organization may become an ambassador or host his or her own fundraising events. In doing so, the mission of the Marine Raider Foundation will be supported by engaging with local communities, increasing awareness and facilitating fundraising activities by seeking out contributions. As this year comes to a close, it is an important time to contribute to those that have made many sacrifices in service to this country.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO I-17 ON-RAMP CLOSURES AT PINNACLE PEAK ROAD

WITH THE SEASON OF HOLIDAY TRAVEL UPON US, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO CHECK YOUR ROUTES BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT ON A ROAD TRIP OR VACATION TO CELEBRATE THE SEASON. In addition to paying extra-close attention on the road while driving due to more travelers and an influx of out of towners that may not be as familiar with our roads, it’s important to check construction and closures to either plan for extra time or route a detour.

The I-17 has been experiencing closures at the onramp of Pinnacle Peak Road and according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the southbound I-17 on-ramp will remain closed around-theclock through the evening of Sunday, December 22. Additionally, the northbound 1-17 exit ramp at Pinnacle Peak Road will be closed around the clock through Monday, January 6, 2020.

These closures will further allow the continuing reconstruction of the I-17 traffic interchanges at Happy Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads.

According to its website, during these closures, ADOT will temporarily reconfigure portions of the north- and southbound I-17 frontage roads between Pinnacle Peak and Deer Valley roads while ramps at I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road are reconstructed. The temporary reconfigurations below are scheduled to remain in place through 5 a.m. Monday, January 6, 2020: • The southbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Premier RV and Self-Storage and Adobe Drive.

• The northbound I-17 frontage road will become a temporary two-way road between Williams Drive and the roadway south of Adams Traditional Academy/north of the Phoenix Metro RV Park.

Work to reconstruct the Interstate 17 traffic inter-

changes at Pinnacle Peak and Happy Valley roads in north Phoenix is accelerating through the end of 2019 and into early 2020. The Arizona Department of Transportation advises everyone who lives, works and drives in the area to allow extra travel time and be prepared to use detours while several ramp, roadway and interstate restrictions are in place. Most work is scheduled to occur during overnight and early morning hours; however, ramp closures at I-17 will be in place continuously, seven days a week, while work is underway.

ADOT also notes that these scheduled closures (and re-openings) are subject to change based on weather and other unforeseen factors, so it’s important to check the website for updates. While experiencing heavy traffic or delays due to these closures, keep the spirit of the season alive by allowing extra space for other drivers to merge and providing courtesy on the road to ensure the holiday travel doesn’t bring out any Grinchy road rage. UNIQUE SHARING ECONOMY COMPANY SETS UP SHOP IN DEER VALLEY STAGING AND DESIGN NETWORK (SDN) IS EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF ITS FIRST ARIZONA LOCATION IN THE DEER VALLEY AIRPARK. The nearly 800,000-cubic-foot industrial warehouse (about 25,000-square-feet) is located at 3055 E. Rose Garden Lane, Suite 140. Founded in 2015 by Tricia Tomlinson, Staging and Design Network offers a solution to a problem that many in the real estate industry face. It is a constant balancing act to source and manage all the furniture types needed to stage every home in the marketplace, so that when a home buyer walks in the door, they want to live there. Staging is becoming an essential part of real estate sales. According to the National Association of Realtors, profession-

ally staged properties sell for up to 18 percent more and in about a third of the time of an un-staged home.

The idea for the company was born after Tomlinson, a former real estate broker, discovered she was struggling to manage the mountain of inventory she accumulated while staging multiple listings. Sourcing, packing, and hauling was becoming a full-time ordeal that took her away from clients and design time; her favorite part. Tomlinson needed a way to access more furniture and better utilize the pieces she owned that were sitting in her garage. Her idea was to share resources with others who had the same problems. She did some research and created a business model to do just that, but quickly realized it would be impossible without the technology to track everyone’s inventory. When she couldn’t find a suitable piece of software to handle such a task, she gathered the financial resources to develop proprietary technology, and Staging and Design Network was born.

company has grown significantly.

“No matter how much inventory I purchased, I was never going to have the right piece for every home,” said Tomlinson, CEO of Staging and Design Network. “I knew I couldn’t be the only one. The stager, who may also be a realtor, or even a seller, often runs out of inventory or needs help managing all the furniture they are not using.”

This is where SDN steps in. The company collectively manages furniture and decor owned by members in the network. Each item is brought into its climate-controlled warehouse and vetted for quality. Barcodes are created, high quality images are taken and uploaded to SDN’s website. At this point, the member has a full account view of their items and can opt-in to share their inventory with others. Whenever an item is rented or sold in SDN’s unique Shared Rental Pool, the member earns income. SDN’s digital platform facilitates this entire process.

“We use our network as a win-win for everyone,” shares Tomlinson. “Your own staging options increase exponentially, and you are letting your furniture work for you by having us market it to

others.” This system not only expands design opportunities, it helps eliminate the cost of staging that many companies take in-house. SDN has a buying center for model merchandising and for supplementing the rental pool. Delivery, set-up, destaging, and will-call are all options.

“We are a network, not a staging company,” she clarifies. “We showcase our members who are very talented and have the resources to provide the appropriate types of furnishings needed for any home at any price point.”

Membership is made up of professional stagers, realtors, builders, interior designers, large developers, and anyone who owns appropriate furniture and wants to earn income or beautify a home for sale. SDN’s mission is to partner with others to share resources, grow their business, and inspire design.

MARICOPA LIVE STEAMERS TAKES GUESTS ON A 20-MINUTE TRAIN RIDE TO THE NORTH POLE THIS SEASON BEGINS MARICOPA LIVE STEAMERS 12TH YEAR OF PROVIDING TRAIN RIDES TO THE NORTH POLE FOR YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE. On Friday and Saturday evenings through December 28, from 6 to 9 p.m., trains will leave Adobe Station for the one-mile trip past giant trees of lights and decorations. Each trip will pass our 50-foot Megatree with 8,000 LED’s that are synchronized to holiday music. Be sure to dress warm as it has been known to snow during the journey! When you return to the station, visit Santa and Mrs. Claus or Shelby’s Junior Engineer School where your budding engineer can take the controls on one of our specially equipped locomotives for a short trip through the freight yard.

PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL ELECTS BETTY GUARDADO AS VICE MAYOR DURING A FORMAL CITY COUNCIL MEETING LAST MONTH, THE PHOENIX CITY COUNCIL ELECTED DISTRICT 5 COUNCILWOMAN BETTY GUARDADO AS VICE MAYOR. She replaces Councilman Jim Waring of District 2 and will serve in the position for one year under Mayor Kate Gallego.

“I am honored to serve as Vice Mayor for the City of Phoenix and so grateful for the support from Mayor Gallego and my fellow Councilmembers,” said Vice Mayor Guardado. “I’d like to thank Councilman Waring for his service to our city.

I know I have some big shoes to fill, but am ready to work collaboratively with my fellow Councilmembers and our Mayor to move Phoenix forward.”

union organizer for hotel workers in Los Angeles, Guardado moved to Arizona in 2007. As the director of organizing in Phoenix, Guardado has conducted campaigns and negotiated contracts for thousands of hotel and food-service workers around Maricopa County. She also helped to lead successful independent voter turnout campaigns to elect several Phoenix City Council members, developing young leaders, and empowering working-class families.

In an Instagram post which include a picture of herself and Mayor Kate Gallego, Guardado wrote “I am honored to have been appointed to serve as Vice Mayor for the City of Phoenix. Thank you for the support Mayor @kategallegoaz and my fellow councilmembers. I’m humbled to learn and grow through this experience.”

In 2018, Guardado decided to run for Phoenix City Council. In May of 2019, she won her election by 25 percentage points, sweeping every precinct in the District. Guardado represents Phoenix District 5, one of the most diverse districts in the city.

She is working to raise living conditions in those neighborhoods, while helping to bring responsible economic development to all of Phoenix.

Despite humble upbringings, Guardado has persevered. Growing up in south central Los Angeles, her father worked as a butcher until she was 11 years old, when he had an accident that left him disabled. At that time, Guardado’s mother went to work cleaning houses and Guardado took care of the household – cooking, cleaning, and taking care of her two younger brothers.

While working as a housekeeper at the Century Plaza Hotel, Guardado became involved in the hospitality workers union. After much success as a deervalleytimes.com

Guardado was sworn in as the District 5 Phoenix City Councilwoman on June 6, 2019. Phoenix District 5 is considered one of the most diverse districts in the city. She is working to raise living conditions in those neighborhoods, while helping to bring responsible economic development to all of Phoenix.

She and her husband have lived in the Maryvale neighborhood for twelve years, where they raise their two children.

VETERANS DAY EVENTS BENEFIT FOR VETS AND DEER VALLEY STUDENTS! THIS VETERANS DAY, STUDENTS AT SCHOOLS ACROSS THE DEER VALLEY UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (DVUSD) GATHERED TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE AND HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED OUR COUNTRY. The celebration at Paseo Hills School in Phoenix is of great significance, not only for the students, but for the community as well. On Friday, November 8, 2019, Paseo Hills put on their 15th Annual Veterans Day Celebration. This event has become a tradition in the community.

Kelsey Chancellor, who works with the National Junior Honor Society at Paseo Hills, says that students arrived early Friday morning to assist in any way they could. Some students escorted Veterans, while others helped decorate and organize the event.

“It was truly amazing to watch our more experienced NJHS members take on leadership roles and help guide new members, to hear them share memories of Veterans Day celebrations in years past, and even come up with new ideas for next year,” Kelsey said.

Melanie Lee, a student at Paseo Hills and a speaker at the event, says the yearly celebrations have made a big impact on her life.

“I get to hear amazing stories about acts of bravery, the beginnings of friendships, and the challenges that many of our veterans have overcome.” Melanie is also carrying on a tradition and a legacy. Her Grandmother was part of the original team that started the event.

“This will always will be a special event for me and my peers.” Melanie hopes that the event will have the same impact on younger students for years to come.

Teodora Gulic, a student at Paseo Hills and a fiveyear ceremony attendee, says there are many ways DVUSD and the community have used the Celebration as a way to give back.

“We represented the veterans in many ways. We gave them cards to show how thankful we are, we made poppies to show what bloomed first on graves, we sang songs, and the band played songs. We have impacted them as much as they have impacted us.”

Many of the veterans who have attended the celebration have shared their gratitude for the event. Assistant Principal Jennifer Arrieta shared that one veteran reached out to her after the ceremony saying, “Thank you so much for the invite. It was so much more than what I expected, and I was honored to be included. As I was leaving, I took some of the extra veteran thank you cards and shared them with other veterans that I

work with throughout the day. They all loved them. It really made their day, and one Vietnam Veteran told me he had never received a Veterans Day card ever in his life and was moved to tears by the kindness of your students.”

In the past six years, the Paseo Hills Student Government Club has raised over four thousand dollars in donations for our Veterans. This year, the students have selected to send their donations to the Wounded Warrior Project which organization offers a variety of programs and services for wounded veterans of the military actions.

MAKING WRONG-WAY SIGNS MORE NOTICEABLE – IN A BIG WAY

EFFORTS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF CRASHES CAUSED BY OFTEN-IMPAIRED WRONG-WAY DRIVERS INVOLVE A VARIETY OF COUNTERMEASURES. They include increasing the size and visibility of wrong-way signs at state highway interchanges.

Those upgrades received a major boost in the form of a $2.1 million project to install new larger wrong way signage at more than 140 interchanges, along with other improvements, along several Phoenixarea freeways.

If you drive in the area, you’re much more likely to notice the larger “Wrong Way” and “Do Not Enter” signs at the top of freeway off-ramps in the Valley. Not only are they bigger, they also represent updated national standards by being located lower to the ground and thus hopefully more in line with a driver’s line of vision. Yes, that’s about making them easier to see so that a wrong-way driver might not travel down that off-ramp.

The signs along exit ramps are not the only changes that crews, working mostly at night, made as part of this project. They also added many more of the large, white arrows that are

located on the pavement of exit ramps.

Those arrows point in the “right” direction of travel, as another measure designed to get the attention of a driver heading the wrong way.

ADOT has been installing larger and more visible wrong way signs not only along Phoenix-area freeways but also at highway interchanges across the state over the last several years.

One other upgrade was the installation of dozens of large “Wrong Way” signs, measuring 5 feet by 8 feet, installed above the left lanes of freeways. They’re on the backs of bridges and other overhead structures and you, traveling the right way, may have noticed a few of them if you’ve glanced to the left across the median.

This particular project has focused on sections of interstates 10 and 17, US 60 (Superstition Freeway) and Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in the East Valley, State Route 51 as well as Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) and Loop 303 in the West Valley.

Those noticeable signs, facing in the wrong direction, are above the freeway left lanes because wrongway drivers tend to travel in those lanes. More than two dozen of these signs were first installed along I-17 in Phoenix in 2017 in association with ADOT’s first-in-the-nation thermal camera wrong-way vehicle alert system.

It remains important to note that more noticeable signs and other countermeasures we’ve mentioned can’t prevent someone, especially someone who’s impaired, from getting behind the wheel and becoming a wrong-way driver. The signs are big.

But stopping impaired driving would make a life-saving difference in an even bigger way. That’s something to keep in mind as we head into the holiday travel season. deervalleytimes.com

WHAT THE TRUCK?!

TESLA FINALLY UNVEILS “CYBERTRUCK”

AFTER MUCH HINT-DROPPING AND HYPE BUILD UP VIA SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERVIEWS, TESLA CEO ELON MUSK REVEALED A PROTOTYPE OF THE NEW “CYBERTRUCK” ON NOVEMBER 21, THE LAST DAY OF THE LOS ANGELES AUTO SHOW. Tesla’s first ever truck has been a longtime coming. Musk has taken to Twitter to tease the electric pickup truck release (which he first announced way back in 2013) and earlier this year, Musk teased fans with a mysterious image of part of a truck that could either be interpreted as a hood or the bed of the pickup with a sleek, matching tonneau cover on board.

The Tesla CEO got fans buzzing through other hints that his latest vehicle would be inspired by the movie Blade Runner, and he also claimed that the truck would be “something quite unique, unlike anything.” Not one to shy away from tooting his company’s own horn, Musk referred to the “cyberpunk truck,” as Tesla’s “best product ever” and even boasted in an interview with Recode last year that the new release is “…Gonna be awesome, it’s gonna be amazing. This will be heart-stopping.”

The reveal was certainly heart-stopping… or perhaps jaw-dropping is a better word. Musk spend upwards of 15 minutes hyping the Cybertruck one final time prior to its reveal. However,

not all claims may have been thoroughly tested prior to the reveal. While Musk’s claim that his new truck was “bulletproof” (at least to smaller firearms) panned out — as a demonstration of sledgehammering the sides resulted in no damage to be seen, the demonstration of the truck’s “unbreakable” metal glass windows didn’t go quite as well.

When a metal ball was thrown at the first window, it shattered immediately.

Musk said the throw was “too hard,” but the glass cracked on the second attempt too. Musk stood by his claim noting, “But it didn’t go through.”

Reactions lit up the social media world following the reveal. Some comments likened Tesla’s new truck to a drawing a kindergarten might have drawn. With the Cybertruck hype, Tesla has enjoyed a hearty rise in stock over the past few months — up 63 percent since August. But it will be interesting to see what kind of demand the truck, which will be sold in the fall of 2021, will attract in terms of actual buyers. Musk had admitted in one interview, “I actually don’t know if a lot of people will buy this pickup truck or not.”

ARIZONA TEACHERS RECEIVE $1 MILLION IN GRANTS

FROM FIESTA BOWL CHARITIES WISHES FOR TEACHERS, POWERED BY DRIVETIME

A

s part of its mission to benefit Arizonans through youth, sports and education, the Fiesta Bowl organization and its Fiesta Bowl Charities Wishes for Teachers program, powered by DriveTime has donated $1 million total to 200 Arizona teachers for the second straight year. This $1 million granting is believed to be the largest donation to Arizona teachers.

The full list of teachers who received a Wishes for Teachers grant may be found online at fiestabowl.org/sports/ wishesforteachers. At $5,000 each for 200 teachers across the state, 138,447 students, 177 schools, 52 School Districts and 40 cities will be positively impacted. Specific to the Deer Valley area, local kindergarten teacher Paige Stewart of Terramar Elementary School will benefit from this grant.

Through a full event and livestream production with a virtual set at SNEAKY BIG, a combination of a draft day and telethon brought together local celebrities, community champions and the Fiesta Bowl Family to randomly select and then call teachers to inform them of their award.

by DriveTime program grow over the years and be the gold standard for teacher support,” said Patrick Barkley, chairman of the Fiesta Bowl Board of Directors. “My mom was a teacher and we all know teachers who inspire us with selfless work, shaping today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders.”

Each fall, Arizona K-12 public or charter school teachers are invited to fill out an online application detailing

their school or classroom need and, after meeting the criteria, wishes are selected by random drawing for teachers to receive a $5,000 grant.

“Teachers are so important in shaping today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. They work tirelessly and selflessly every day, giving not only their time, but often money from their own pockets,” said Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Executive Director. “Wishes for Teachers supports, honors and celebrates Arizona’s teachers for their commitment to our children and donating $1 million to Arizona’s teachers, provides resources they have only wished to have in the past.”

Each of the unique 200 teacher wishes will benefit teachers and schools in technology, reading, music, fitness and more. Including this season, over the four years of the program, Fiesta Bowl

Wishes for Teachers has granted $3.2 million to Arizona teachers, impacting over 150,000 children across the state.

“Wishes for Teachers is exceptional in how it helps schools and teachers upgrade facilities, provide needed equipment and support student learning,” said Don Reese, DriveTime Chief Executive Officer.

“The great gift of education is very important; as we get educated, we get the meaning of life and that’s how people come together. Wishes for Teachers benefits teachers, an extraordinary vocation that gives the gift of education every day.”

WASHINGTON FEDERAL TRANSFORMS INTO WAFD BANK ARIZONA

ashington Federal is one of the nation’s strongest banks.

Within Arizona, it boasts $1.4 billion in deposits at its 31 branches.

But over the past several years, even after winning the Money Magazine’s “Best Bank” in the state, Washington Federal in Arizona still got the same questions over and over. Some of Arizona regional president Mike Brown’s favorites are: • Is Washington Federal part of the federal government?

IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER BARIATRIC SURGERY? BENEFITS MAY INCLUDE REMISSION OR REVERSAL OF TYPE 2 DIABETES, LOWERED RISK OF HEART DISEASE

E

very year, countless resolutions are made following the holidays to “lose that extra weight once and for all.” While there is no magic solution, there is a medical solution at Abrazo Health hospitals.

In the United States, more than twothirds of the population suffer from obesity, and the numbers continue to increase. When diet, exercise and medications have failed, there is still another option! It may be time to consider weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery.

Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of the

diseases and conditions that are commonly associated with it, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, among other health risks. Weight loss surgery may provide effective, lasting relief from severe obesity for appropriate patients, according to Daniel Fang, MD, FACS, FASMBS, bariatric surgeon at Abrazo’s Scottsdale Campus.

Weight loss surgery may be an option for adults with a body mass index (BMI) equal to or greater than 40, or equal to or greater than 35 with serious health problems related to obesity. While weight loss surgery is considered safe, like any surgery, it does

have potential risks. Those who are considering surgical weight loss should talk to their physician about the risks and benefits of weight loss surgery.

“Weight loss surgery is designed to help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight, and it can help alleviate many other obesity-related conditions like heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, depression and more,” said Fang.

The good news is that typically the benefits of weight loss surgery far outweigh the risks, with results including long-term remission or reversal of type 2 diabetes; improved mobility and increased energy; lowered risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke; reduced or eliminated joint pain; improved mood and feelings of wellbeing and increased selfesteem and confidence.

If you’re wondering if you’re a candidate for weight-loss surgery, there are some indicators. Those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more or who are more than 100 pounds overweight (for example, an adult who is 5’11” tall and weighs 290 pounds would have a BMI over 40) or a BMI of 35 or more and at least two obesity related issues such as type II diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease could be ideal for this type of surgery. Another candidate for this type of medical weight loss solution would be those with the inability to achieve a healthy weight through traditional weight loss methods.

When considering this surgery, keep in mind that the National Institutes of Health and the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommend that surgery be performed by a board-certified surgeon with specialized experience/ training in bariatric and metabolic surgery, and at a center that has a multidisciplinary team of experts for follow-up care.

a mental health professional. In addition, some insurance companies require that the surgery be performed at a facility that meets the ASMBSapproved quality standards. Facilities which meet high standards or quality, like those outlined in MBSAQIP, are preferable choices for patients.

WHAT TO EXPECT When combined with a comprehensive treatment plan, bariatric surgery may act as an effective tool to provide long term weight-loss and help increase one’s quality of health, explains Dr. Fang.

Bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and duodenal switch, work by changing the anatomy of your gastrointestinal tract (stomach and digestive system) or by causing different physiologic changes in your body that change your energy balance and fat metabolism.

“Regardless of which bariatric surgery procedure you and your surgeon decide is best for you, it is important to remember that bariatric surgery is a tool. Weight loss success also depends on many other important factors, such as nutrition, exercise, and behavior modification.

“By changing your gastrointestinal anatomy, certain bariatric procedures affect the production of intestinal hormones in a way that reduces hunger and appetite and increases feelings of fullness. The end result is reduction in the desire to eat and in the frequency of eating,” said Dr. Fang. “Unlike dietary weight loss, surgical weight loss has a higher rate of success because an appropriate energy balance is created.”

Bariatric surgery may improve a number of conditions and cause hormonal changes to reverse the progression of obesity. Several studies have found that more than 90 percent of bariatric patients are able to maintain a long-term weight loss of 50 percent excess body weight or more.

e have a handful of new construction homes available by various builders in the Norterra area. There are also three new communities not yet released but that will start opening soon; two by D.R. Horton and one by Taylor Morrison.

Currently there are four builders available in Union Park. Those builders include Ashton Woods, David Weekly, Cachet and newly released K. Hovnanian. Here’s a quick break down of what’s currently available: Ashton Woods Homes offers zero lot line type homes, all of which are twostories. Currently, the only remaining homes available range from $375,990 for an 1,803 sq. ft home, to $509,990 for a 2,472 sq. ft home (these are based upon current models).

David Weekly Homes offers single family, mid-range priced homes at Union Park. Pricing starts from $467,990 to $562,990. The homes range in size between 2,332 sq. ft to larger two-story models at 3,864 sq. ft.

They currently have new construction and move-in ready homes.

ictoria, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton touring the world, is making her global debut at Arizona Science Center with a special exhibition that opened to the public on November 17. This world premiere exhibition will transport guests to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth, bringing to life one of the most important discoveries in the history of paleontology and giving museum visitors the rare opportunity to visit the Cretaceous period where Victoria’s story will unfold in her natural habitat.

Victoria the T-Rex was officially announced to the scientific community as the second most complete T-Rex skeleton on record. Initially unearthed outside Faith, South Dakota in 2013, Victoria has undergone years of meticulous research and restoration in order to earn this claim. Victoria’s completeness and unique pathologies have

provided paleontologists with a wealth of insights into the species that will be studied for years to come.

Embarking on a five-year tour across the world, this immersive exhibition produced by IMG was developed in partnership with a dedicated group of research collaborators and paleontologists. F

or some, brewing is simply a fun hobby that allows you to reap the benefits of your labor. But for a few, that hobby becomes a passion, an obsession, and potentially a profession. I fell into the latter category, and while I haven’t looked back, I clearly remember my path started as a home brewer. The sheer joy I get out of making beer is profound; it’s interesting, fun, relaxing, and cathartic.

When someone asks about becoming a home brewer, I absolutely encourage and support them in their endeavors.

There are three ways to homebrew: extract, partial mash, and all grain (in order of difficulty). My first brewing experience was a Mr. Beer kit (extract) from BevMo, running about $50.

These kits are fantastic for a simple intro into making beer and come with everything you need for a single batch.

However, if you’re like me, once you taste that first batch, you’ll want to brew another and unfortunately, these kits are not meant to last.

With my next step, I invested roughly $100 into a setup that was reusable (with added raw ingredients) and would allow for expansion to partial mash and all-grain brewing. These items can be found as kits on Amazon with varied prices. The raw materials can be found online as well or at your local homebrew shop. Now all you need is a cool, dark place to let your creation ferment. Whatever route you take, you’re in for an adventure.

TONTO NATURAL BRIDGE – PAYSON Tonto Natural Bridge is a hidden gem of geological wonder located near Payson on the Mogollon Rim. This small state park lets you hike down trails, stairs, and bridges to a stream fed by natural springs. The stream flows directly through the giant wonder of the only known travertine natural bridge in North America. It’s a great spot for picnics, short hikes, and wildlife watching, with a historic lodge and visitors center. The park is a great day trip from Phoenix and a perfect excuse to visit Rim Country.

BOYCE THOMPSON ARBORETUM – SUPERIOR One of the best reasons to venture east of Phoenix on Highway 60 is to visit the diverse beauty of Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park. Founded in the 1920s by mining magnate Col. William Boyce Thompson, the 323 acres of the Arboretum is both the oldest and the largest botanical garden in Arizona. The Arboretum features flowers, trees, and plants from deserts around the world, set into the sheer cliffs of mountainous terrain through a high desert forest next to a flowing stream. This is a beautiful spot for a day trip, and a must-see drive into the mountains near Superior on the way to Globe.

CATALINA – TUCSON If you’re looking for fantastic natural views of Sonoran Desert mountains, you must pay a visit to Catalina State Park in Tucson. Nestled in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson, this park provides 5,500 acres of fantastic hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, through canyons, streams, and desert in the Coronado National Forest. A favorite

spot for bird and wildlife watching, the park offers beautiful views of mountains, desert flora, and wildlife.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS – BENSON Celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year, Kartchner Caverns is a world-class Arizona State Park that features fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas. A well-kept secret for decades, the park opened in 1999 and provides facilities for camping, hiking, and of course touring the pristine and previously untouched caverns. Q: Is CBD the same as marijuana and will it make me high?

A: No, CBD is NOT marijuana and it will NOT make you high. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, one of over 100 different cannabinoids. Like Hemp, marijuana is also a variety of cannabis plant. Hemp plants contain CBD and trace amounts of THC at or below 0.3%. THC has both medicinal and psychoactive properties, whereas CBD has tremendous medicinal properties (neuro-protectant and anti-inflammatory) with no psychoactive effects.

Q: Is CBD legal?

A: Yes, Hemp-derived CBD is Federally legal. CBD is primarily produced from hemp plants but can also be produced from marijuana plants. CBD is illegal if sourced from marijuana. It is important to know the source, and that

you are purchasing from a reputable supplier. If a CBD product tests higher than the Federally mandated THC level of 0.3%, the product is deemed illegal.

There are a number of products on the market that are not properly lab tested, do not contain the labeled amount of CBD, and exceed the legal amount of THC. Proper lab testing is crucial to make sure that you are not breaking the law unknowingly.

Q: How do I know if a CBD product is legitimate/safe?

A: The average consumer won’t know and may find that many CBD products don’t work for them. Lab testing verifies the CBD content/potency as well as tests for bacteria, mold, heavy metals and toxic chemicals. There are few regulations governing today’s CBD industry which means purchasing from a reputable source that follows proper lab testing procedures is extremely important.

Q: How do I determine what is a quality CBD product?

A: We have an ongoing joke in our lab, “If you wouldn’t buy sushi at a gas station, would you buy gas station CBD?” Always start with a reputable brand with proper labeling and verified third party lab testing. Full-Spectrum CBD is king because it produces an “entourage effect” in conjunction with other cannabinoids, as opposed to a “Pure” or “Isolated” CBD, which has limited benefits and no traceable THC. Seek products that have all-natural ingredients and use Super Critical CO2 Extraction. Quality CBD is not cheap.

Q: How does CBD work in my body?

A: To put it simply, all animals and humans have an Endocannabinoid System already present in their bodies.

You have receptors throughout your body that accept and use these cannabinoids (CBD being the most prolific) to regulate homeostasis in the body.

That’s why CBD can work for so many ailments.

Q: What is the best delivery method for CBD? A: It is scientifically proven that smoking a medication and inhaling the vapors has high efficacy and is fast-acting.

However, it is generally accepted that smoking, and more recently vaping, is not recommended for your health. The best delivery method would then be CBD Oil administered sublingually and absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

You can also get CBD through topical applications (creams/lotions) absorbed through the skin. Topical applications are more location specific and can be very effective but have less efficacy than sublingual delivery. You can also ingest CBD (softgels/gummies/honey), but this has the lowest efficacy.

During WWII in Nazi Germany, a young boy questions his beliefs when he discovers a young Jewish girl secretly living in his house.

Taika Waititi manages to perfectly walk the tightrope between poor taste and edgy comedy. Jojo Rabbit tears apart fascism in a comedic yet still heartfelt way, never pulling punches and still giving such a horrific time the brutally honest look it deserves. Even the film’s design and cinematography match the tonal shifts between light and dark. The cast is a perfect mix of newcomers (Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie) and seasoned actors (Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell) who bring the characters to life. This was a passion project for Waititi and it shows.

THE LIGHTHOUSE

Two sailors suspect there are greater forces conspiring against them on their isolated lighthouse shift.

The wonderful thing about Robert Eggers’ new film is how the viewer soon feels the same isolation as the characters. The camerawork, Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe’s performances and visuals capture you and place you into their world before you know it. This world is scary, unrelenting, nothing ever feels normal or safe, and it will continuously keep you guessing if something is actually watching our char-

acters or if they’re going insane. The black and white photography and unique aspect ratio are key in this style. Creating the atmosphere perfectly is Mark Korven’s absolutely terrifying score - one of the best I’ve ever heard. This is a new horror classic.

FORD V FERRARI

The true story of Ford’s efforts to outdo Ferrari at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Ford V Ferrari is 152 minutes long and doesn’t waste a single moment. Everything is central to the story and includes the perfect amount of focus on the actual creation of the car; even the failures and improvements get their proper showcase here. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are wonderful as two distinct characters that mix well together, and director James Mangold shoots the race scenes in a way that makes the final race one of the best theatrical experiences of the year.

PARASITE

A family in South Korea forms a relationship with an upper-class family which brings dire consequences.

Director Bong Joon-ho has made his masterpiece with this new thriller. This film astounds with a mixture of incredible filmmaking, writing and an amazingly diverse personality of cast members, and offers an intriguing look into class disparity and differences. A film like this receiving a wide release is rare, so I highly recommend taking the time to see it.
