FOOTHILLS CARING CORP

F

oothills Caring Corps has issued an immediate call for volunteers to help in their mission to promote independence and enhance the quality of life of elderly residents in the Northeast Valley. The 501(c)3 based in Carefree, Arizona loses a significant number of volunteers when they return to their part-time homes during the summer.

Foothills Caring Corps needs additional recruits to not only fill the seasonal gap but also to help with the community’s growing need for senior services.

Potential volunteers can attend a monthly orientation on the second Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Caring Corps offices, 7275 E. Easy Street, Suite B103/104 in Carefree.

“We need people in the Deer Valley area to join our volunteer force to help their homebound ‘neighbors’ feel connected to the community and enjoy a more independent life.” said Debbra Determan, Foothills Caring Corps executive director.

With numerous ways to volunteer, the Foothills Caring Corps has the greatest need for drivers in their van transportation programs. Through its volunteer force, the nonprofit agency provides a variety of invaluable services including medical and van transportation, friendly visits, mobile meals, shopping assistance and more.

Based on a volunteers’ schedule, favorite things to do and skill set, the Foothills Caring Corps staff will find the perfect way to serve. Current Foothills Caring Corps volunteers report a flexible and highly rewarding experience easy to fit into a busy schedule because of multiple ways to and assist.

CITY OF PHOENIX BUDGET AND WATER ISSUE UPDATES From the desk of Vice Mayor Thelda Williams THE CITY OF PHOENIX BUDGET PROCESS IS RECOGNIZED FOR ITS OPENNESS AND TRANSPARENCY. Over a three-week period in April, we held 15 community hearings throughout the city, in every Council district. In addition, several presentations were made to organizations, neighborhood groups, advisory boards and at my monthly breakfast with district residents. We had many residents attend and several hundred comments through comments at hearings, letters, phone calls, emails and social media messages.

I want to thank you for participating in the budget process, your feedback is valuable and truly reflects the priorities of Phoenix residents.

Some of the comments from residents that we heard most often asked that we preserve existing services, increase funding for homelessness and homelessness clean-ups, increase funding for arts and public art maintenance, increased library access

and hours, hire more police officers and firefighters, and increase funding for street maintenance and repair.

I am happy to report that the budget preserves existing city services and makes significant investments in public safety, homelessness and other important community services including neighborhoods and libraries.

Police and Fire staffing continues to be the single most important priority for the City Council and the community.

Since public safety hiring resumed in late 2015, Police and Fire filled staffing levels have increased by 105 filled police positions and 73 filled fire positions. The budget continues the trend to provide the resources the Police Department needs to reach and maintain a total filled count of 3,125 sworn positions. This reflects the increase of 177 officers over the current filled count of 2,948. For Fire, the budget reflects the resources the Fire Department needs to maintain a total filled count of 1,654, which is required to ensure compliance with the 2016 SAFER Grant.

The budget includes funding and staffing needed to expand the hours of temporary Fire State 55, near Interstate 17 and Jomax Road in North Phoenix from part-time to full-time operations every day on a 24-hour schedule. This addition is expected to improve response times and provide the resources needed to respond to the increasing demand in the service area.

With this addition, the projected filled staffing level for fire will increase from 1,654 to 1,668. This request will be funded through the reallocation of existing overtime and other miscellaneous savings and therefore does not increase the overall General Fund budget.

While the appropriate agencies worked through the issue and Anthem received a permit to allow EPCOR to proceed with construction, it delayed the expected completion date. I want to thank Maricopa County Supervisor Bill Gates for his dedication and hard work on this issue. His leadership was invaluable as we worked to explore options to extend the deadline into until the end of August. Enough progress had been made to ensure the city that a permanent water station will be constructed and completed in the coming months.

Also, as an update to a water issue in the nearby New River and Desert Hills area, in late April, the city extended a deadline that will allow water haulers to supply water while an EPCOR sourced station is completed to replace the temporary city supply standpipe site. Prior to the final meeting for approval, the Anthem Community Council realized that the Army Corps

SCOUTS OF TROOP 224 SEND A BIT OF HOME TO SERVICE MEMBERS SCOUTS’ “POCKET FLAGS” TO BE PLACED IN CARE PACKAGES FOR DEPLOYED MILITARY WHILE MANY 11 TO 13-YEAR OLDS WERE PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, SWIMMING, OR RELAXING, SCOUTS OF TROOP 224 SPENT THEIR SATURDAY AFTERNOON FOLDING “POCKET FLAGS.” Thanks to their efforts, deployed service members receiving care packages from the nonprofit organization Packages from Home will receive one of these small reminders of home. The boys of Troop 224 purchased three hundred of the mini-flags from the Pocket Flag Project TM using money from their weekly member dues.

Service is an integral part of the Scouting program and something these boys take seriously. Senior Patrol Leader Christopher LeMaster explained, “We do service projects because it’s part of Scouting. We did this project because when people serve in the military, they need to know that we think about them

and we appreciate their sacrifices. These little flags will let them know that we recognize them for what they do for our country.”

Each flag was respectfully folded and placed in a clear plastic zipper bag.A card telling the recipient, “A flag for your pocket so you can always carry a little piece of home.We are praying for you and we are proud of you.Thank you for defending our country and our freedom” was included with each flag. Christopher and fellow Scouts Noah Anderson, Michael Wyatt, Ares Ostermeier, and Jacob Hernandez hope to receive letters from some of the flag recipients.

ANNUAL SUMMER READING PROGRAM SUMMER READING REWARDS WILL RUN FROM MAY 25 TO AUGUST 6 THE SHOPS AT NORTERRA ARE HELPING VALLEY SCHOOL CHILDREN AVOID THE “SUMMER SLIDE” AND KEEP UP THEIR READING SKILLS DURING SUMMER BREAK. The program started May 25 and will run through August 6. Kids ages 6 to 12 are encouraged to read every day and track the number of minutes they read to earn prizes from participating stores and restaurants.

Studies show that when students don’t read over the summer months, they lose core reading skills and fall behind when they return to school – an occurrence known as the “summer slide.” In fact, a study by Oxford Learning found that children can lose up to two months of reading performance during the summer, which if continued throughout the elementary school years, can result in those students being two and a half years behind by the time they reach middle school.

MVD URGES ARIZONANS TO CONSIDER GETTING VOLUNTARY TRAVEL ID

AS 2020 DEADLINE APPROACHES, AIRPORTS AND TSA HELP SPREAD THE WORD ARIZONANS WHO PLAN TO USE THEIR DRIVER LICENSE OR ID CARD TO GET THROUGH SECURITY CHECKPOINTS at U.S. airports and other restricted, federally controlled facilities should take action to get an Arizona Voluntary Travel ID through the Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division.

The Transportation Security Administration will provide MVD informational flyers at its airport checkpoints in Flagstaff, Phoenix Mesa-Gateway, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Tucson International and Yuma International. The flyers advise passengers that starting Oct. 1, 2020,

standard credentials won’t be accepted by the TSA. “Now is a great time to get a Voluntary Travel ID because the federal deadline gets closer every day,” said MVD Director Eric Jorgensen. “MVD is making this process simple. Customers can go to ServiceArizona.com and make an office appointment. The website provides information about what documents that customers should bring with them to meet the REAL ID requirements for the Voluntary Travel ID. Appointments also help MVD offices run more efficiently, helping to get customers out of line and safely on the road.”

The Voluntary Travel ID is an Arizona driver license or ID card that meets the additional identification requirements of the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. Standard Arizona licenses or ID cards do not conform to the federal REAL ID requirements because of a state law that says those steps must be taken voluntarily by the license or card holder.

The cost is $25 for renewals and first-time issues. Per federal law, the credential is valid for eight years, in most cases.

Customers whose photos need to be updated in the near future may wish to

get the Voluntary Travel ID. Forms of identification required for a Voluntary Travel ID include one document such as a birth certificate or a passport that proves identity; one document that proves a Social Security number such as a Social Security card or W-2 form; and two documents such as utility bills or bank statements that prove Arizona residency.

A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES…wake up by 5:30am, work out and arrive at the office by 7:30. I try to leave by 4:30pm to spend time with my two boys (Shai, 8 and Ben, 4). After they go to bed I work a little and spend time with my husband, Keith. I go to bed around 11pm and start all over again!

You can’t row in the same direction when you don’t agree about the direction itself. This was a hard lesson both my team and myself learned recently, and it made me understand how important it is.

SPEED SAVES RELATIONSHIPS: THREE STEPS TO CRUSHING IT WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE ONLINE AND THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

The formula is pretty simple. When a customer writes a complaint online, review, tweet, post, etc., don’t ignore them. Respond quickly, every time, period.

Your business is not where you are, it’s where your customers are…online.

Since most people read reviews (95 percent), not write them (5 percent), this is very important.

2. Respond quickly and show you care – even if it’s not perfect - To emphasize the importance of the rapid fire response needed for your customers, the next time your significant other looks in your eyes and says, “I love you”, don’t respond for 15 seconds. Good luck! After your customer posts feedback, they are left empty and if the post is about a negative experience, with each passing hour, consider how many people they will tell

between now and when you respond.

Responding quickly is even more important than a well-crafted response.

Don’t spend much time trying to think how to take care of the guest, just respond.

3. Take it offline - In your initial fast response to them, ask them to continue the conversation offline or in a private way.

Follow these steps and I guarantee your customer advocacy will go through the roof, you will have raving fans and you will learn a lot!

Roof Rats are often black or brown in color and can be over 8 inches long, with a long tail, large ears and eyes, and a pointed nose. Their bodies are smaller and sleeker than the Norway rat’s and their fur is smooth. Roof rats prefer high places (to avoid predators) and may be found in elevated areas such as trees, rafters, attics and roofs or lower to the ground in piles of rubbish or wood. They are nocturnal by nature and are accomplished climbers. They eat fruit (which has earned them the name “fruit rat” or “citrus rat”) and nuts, although roof rats are actually omnivorous and will eat almost anything available to

them. Roof rats are also food hoarders, stashing supplies of food such as seeds and nuts. Roof rats nest outside in trees, woodpiles and debris, and in dense vegetation (or a seldom-used barbeque grill!). Like the pack rat, bait stations are effective in reducing a population. Depending on where we find the rats active, we might place a station up in the attic or near trees that the rats are using to climb onto your roof.

Again, one loaded station can work for several weeks to lure and infect multiple rat invaders.

PHOENIX-NORTERRA CHAPTER OF THE MOMS CLUB

T

he abbreviation “MOMS” in MOMS Club stands for “Moms Offering Moms Support,” and the Phoenix-Norterra Chapter of this national group takes that mission seriously. The Chapter offers opportunities for learning, growth and socialization – for moms and their children. The members not only support each other by hosting weekly play-dates, holding monthly group meetings and sharing much needed advice, but they also run a “Heart-to-Heart” program, which assists new moms or members in crisis by providing home-cooked meals and offering support, including babysitting. The benefit is access to a group of wonderful local women who have shared experiences and are willing to “lend a hand” to help one other and to be part of their “tribe” through the challenging stages of motherhood. One of the

best things is that children are always welcome at events, except for a few “Moms Only” gettogethers, which give members a much needed “break” from their daily responsibilities.

The Phoenix-Norterra Chapter of the MOMS Club has been in existence for almost 8 years, after officially forming in July 2010. It is geared towards serving stay-at-home moms and part-time working moms that reside within the following North Phoenix boundaries: East of 1-17, West of 7th Street, North of Happy Valley Road and South of Carefree Highway, and recently extended to include Tramonto. The Chapter has five volunteer Board members that serve a one-year term, and many additional volunteer coordinators. The Chapter has approximately forty members.

In addition to having playgroups for children of all ages, the Chapter also boasts several sub-clubs for special interests, which allows the members to participate in fun activities such as dinners out, adult and kids crafts, fitness activities, book club, a monthly “Moms Night Out” and a calendar full of activities. The events range from simple park play-dates to elaborate spring carnivals with face painters and games. The Chapter also participates in several service projects throughout the year, which benefit needy moms and kids locally, as well as nationally. The meetings involve Club business, voting if necessary, social time with members and their kids and occasionally guest speakers. Membership is only $25 per year.

One of the favorite events for members is their annual Gala, which is

open to the public and is the biggest fundraiser of the year. At their Gala this February, the Chapter raised over $13,000 for Ryan House, their chosen charity this year. Coming up this month on June 15, the Chapter will be hosting their end of the year banquet, where they celebrate their accomplishments and memories of the past year, and honor everything that the MOMS Club means to them.

The members have decided to open the event to the public, inviting potential new members that may be interested.

WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE – AQUARIUMS IN THE DESERT

ater is a scarce resource in the desert, so we don’t typically imagine Arizona to be a place where you can find high-quality aquariums. Fortunately for Sonoran Desert dwellers, that perception is wrong. Arizona is home to a number of world-class aquariums, including the largest in the southwest. Summer is a perfect time to escape the desert heat and find an oasis of water and sea life in one of the many aquariums in our state.

Here is a list of aquariums you can visit in the Sonoran Desert.

ODYSEA AQUARIUM The state of the art OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale opened its doors in 2016. As the largest aquarium in the southwest, it boasts two million gallons of water, 60 exhibits, and over 30,000 sea creatures. OdySea also has separate tours and encounters available to learn more about sea life and provide visitors with additional aquatic adventures. Some of the extra highlights at OdySea Aquarium include a Behind the Scenes tour, an underwater SeaTrek, and a special Penguin Interaction Program. It’s best to buy your tickets online in advance, to get discounts and avoid waiting in long lines. OdySea is worth the trip and a great place to escape the heat of summer – and a membership pays for itself in just a few visits.

WILDLIFE WORLD ZOO, AQUARIUM AND SAFARI PARK The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park, located off the Loop 303 highway in Litchfield Park, is another awesome aquatic adventure.

The aquarium portion of the zoo gets you up close and personal to sea life and lets you see everything from penguin feedings to sharks.

The South Pacific Reef tunnel tank features the longest acrylic tunnel in

Arizona, and the aquarium is home to the only sea lions in our state. The Aquarium’s sea lion facility and programs offer educational demonstrations, sea lion shows and feedings at their specially constructed Shipwreck Cove area. The Wildlife World Zoo, Aquarium and Safari Park is always worth a visit and the aquarium is a special treat for desert dwellers trying to beat the heat of summer.

SEALIFE ARIZONA AQUARIUM The SeaLife Arizona Aquarium, located in the Arizona Mills shopping center in Tempe, is a part of a larger SeaLife Aquarium group that has locations throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia. The SeaLife Trust works to promote conservation efforts through education, breeding, rescuing and protecting aquatic animals all over the world.

Some of the highlights of the SeaLife Arizona Aquarium include fresh water and salt water exhibits, Critter Canyon, an interactive tide pool, a Bay of Rays, and an ocean view. The kids will love the educational challenges and treasure hunts provided by the aquarium, as well as the fun play area! ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM - WARDEN AQUARIUM The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson is natural park that is completely unique to Arizona and the Sonoran Desert. It’s a zoo, plus a botanic garden, plus a natural history

museum, plus a conservation, research and educational center. It also hosts a great aquarium for summer visitors to the museum. The ArizonaSonora Desert Museum’s Warden Aquarium opened in 2013 and welcomes Tucson residents and visitors with its unexpected exhibit of massive rivers with six-foot minnows, and oceans teeming with whales, stingrays, eels, and thousands of invertebrates found in the Sonoran Desert. As the museum explains, “A full understanding of the Sonoran Desert region isn’t possible without recognizing the importance of the freshwater rivers that flow through it and the Sea of Cortez, which are critical to this desert’s status as the lushest desert on earth.” Plan to stop at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum the next time you visit Tucson – it’s one you shouldn’t miss.

“Deaths associated with hot cars are a completely preventable tragedy for both our children and our pets,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “My personal challenge to every one of us in Maricopa County is to ensure no child or pet is lost to vehicular heatstroke this year.”

Vehicular heatstroke is listed as the number one cause of deaths in non-collision vehicle fatalities for children 14 and younger, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is important to know that the risk of vehicular heatstroke can occur in air temperatures of 80 degrees or less and even as low as 57 degrees.

Interior temperatures can quickly rise to dangerous levels even with the windows slightly rolled down.

Young children are especially at risk because they can fall asleep during a car ride, making it easier for a driver not to notice them when the vehicle is parked, and for infants who are less capable of regulating their body temperature.

“We lead busy lives, especially as

parents of young children,” says Todd Nickoles, manager of Phoenix Children’s Center for Family Health and Safety. “We want parents and caregivers to know how much of a ‘hot zone’ that their vehicle can be, and never to leave a child alone in a car, truck or van.”

The SafeKidsAZ.org webpage is filled with information, tips and videos to help spread the message and educate our Community about this issue. The site also reminds residents that leaving a child or pet in a vehicle is potentially fatal and, in some circumstances, a criminal offense.

“Last year, the passing of House Bill 2494, which aims to end hot car deaths, gives good Samaritans and AHS’ animal cruelty investigators an additional tool to save a life when necessary,” said Arizona Humane Society President and CEO, Dr. Steven Hansen. “It is our hope that through education and awareness we can work together to prevent these tragedies before it reaches that point.”

GROWING ICE IN THE DESERT

nd just like that, North Phoenix residents are rejoicing. After a steady diet of self-storage facilities, auto parts stores, and fast food joints, plans are finally in the works for a multi-use sports and entertainment center between I-17 and North Valley Parkway, just south of Dove Valley Road.

The North Phoenix Gateway Village Planning Committee recently gave their unanimous blessing to plans for the development of a 174,000-square-foot sports arena, with a vision of an accompanying hotel and restaurant. Developers see the arena as a destination for indoor sports such as hockey, figure skating, soccer, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse and even curling. Current and emerging sports leagues can look forward to a first-class facility with locker rooms, spectator seating, and amenities for visiting teams. If the adjacent hotel concept becomes a reality, traveling teams and their families would have access to food and lodging onsite. For athletes (and parents) who have been shuttling their kids to and from Central Phoenix, Peoria, or North Scottsdale for some ice time, the prospect of a local rink is appealing. And for anyone looking for indoor activities – especially during the summer – this project would be a godsend.

Another appealing feature is the plan to build a walkable trail that transects the property and includes shaded areas and park benches. Visitors would be able to take in the unspoiled views while getting all their steps in for the day.

While league and public usage is still to be determined, it’s conceivable that the sports complex could serve not only Central Arizona, but teams coming down from northern Arizona, as well. This could benefit growing recreational organizations such as the Coyotes Curling Club or the Arizona Amateur Hockey Association. The prospect of having a state-of-the-art facility for on-ice sports located at the northern tip of the Valley bodes well for sports leagues throughout the state.

As a condition of their approval, the Planning Committee put several community–focused stipulations in place regarding building height, paint colors, and environmental impact. The developer agreed to address these stipulations, which could help pave the way for a smooth approval process by the Planning Commission in June. If all goes well, the facility is targeting an opening in the fall of 2020. deervalleytimes.com

or some homeowners, the hardest part about selling your house isn’t the planning, the prepping, or the packing – it’s the waiting. You clean your home, you stage your home, you list your home…and then you wait. Even the most patient people can get a little nervous waiting for a buyer.

Part of the reason is emotional. Once you’ve made the decision to live someplace else, you’re mentally checked-out and ready for the life’s next chapter. They say home is where the heart is. And if your heart is no longer there, the rest of you would rather not be, either.

For some people, it’s a matter of convenience. Living in a house that you’re trying to sell can be stressful.

You have to keep things clean for any prospective buyers who want to take a tour. Plus, it’s a good idea to be out of the home when a Realtor is showing your place (requiring you to pack up the family and disappear, sometimes with short notice). On the opposite side of the spectrum, trying to sell a home you no longer live in presents its own challenges. All it takes is a water leak or an air conditioner left running round the clock, and now you’re facing some unexpected costs to go along with that unwanted stress. And as anyone who

has ever relocated out of state can tell you, the pressure to get a home sold quickly is very real.

From a financial standpoint, one of the biggest motivating factors for a fast sale shows up every 30 days: your mortgage. That’s a hard check to write when you know it’s going toward a house that you’re selling.

In some situations, the mortgage on your next home might be contingent on your old home selling. If the timing isn’t perfect, you could end up losing out on your new home.

The most obvious way to accelerate the sales process is to list it at a price below market value. The downside, of course, is that you walk away with less money. This is where homeowners need to balance the pros & cons of a home’s listing price. If you can get fair market value, but it means you’ll be writing 3 additional months of mortgage checks, would that be worth it to you? If you could get your home sold in 30 days, but it requires you to drop your price by $5,000, are you OK with that? Once you identify your own comfort level, a good Realtor will be able to create a strategy to get your home sold at a price you can live with in a timeframe you can handle.

SUMMER ROAD TRIP ARIZONA: TRAVEL TIPS FOR HEADING NORTH

W

ith the heat of summer hitting the Valley of the Sun at full force in the coming months, it’s the perfect time of year to hop in your car and head north with the family. We love to travel up to the higher elevations and tall pines of Flagstaff, but the traffic can be a nightmare and the trip can get pretty grueling if your kids get bored on the way.

Here are some tips for making the most of your Arizona road trip with the family, and some of the sights you just shouldn’t miss along the way.

NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC TIPS Lets face it – the traffic on I-17 north can be a horror and test the patience of even the most mellow person.

There are a few simple tips to avoid traffic headaches, however: • Travel on off-days • Leave early • Travel at non-peak traffic times • Take a back road

Weekend travel heading north from Phoenix is always very heavy, but it is especially heavy on Friday afternoon, Saturday mid-to-late morning, Sunday after 11:00. If you want to avoid the most traffic, leave for your destination as early as possible (we like to go at what we call “O-DarkHundred” – a term we got from Colonel Grandpa). Be sure to check the traffic before – Google Maps traffic feature is awesome. This will let you pick some alternate routes, in case there is an accident.

There are some really beautiful, less-travelled Arizona highways, if you are willing to take a little more time to get where you want to go.

For example, if you are heading to Prescott, consider taking the Carefree Highway (State Route 74) to Wickenburg, then catching State Route 89 to Prescott. The drive takes you through some sleepy small towns, past Yarnell (and the Granite Mountain Hot Shots Memorial State Park), up and around Mingus Mountain. A longer drive, but deervalleytimes.com

a beautiful view and worth the trip if you want to explore some of Arizona’s less-travelled roads.

TIPS FOR DRIVING WITH KIDS Traffic isn’t the only challenge of taking a road trip with your family. Driving with kids in the car can present it’s own challenges. We have taken Ladybug on so many road trips over the years that she rides like a pro. She is used to being in the car for long periods and always brings toys and activities to keep her occupied. Her cousins haven’t travelled as much, so they always needed a bit more help. Here are some tips for keeping kids busy and entertained – especially if you run into heavy traffic where there are no stops along the way: 1. Use the restroom before you leave – and every chance you get along the way! I can’t emphasize this enough. One of the worst things to encounter is a kid who has to go, but has nowhere to go. It’s traumatic for the child and for the parents. So take time to take a break before you head out and stop when you have a chance. There are many stretches of highway – even our well-travelled, heavy traffic I-17 – that just don’t have a place to pull over. Go when you can, so it’s not an issue when you can’t!

2. Pack snacks or a lunch for munching in the car. Kids get hungry at the darndest times, and when they get hungry it’s immediate. If they don’t eat right then, you could just be asking for trouble – little cranky beasties do not make for a pleasant journey. So bring snacks – granola bars, goldfish, fruit, peanut butter and pretzels – healthy snacks that will tide them over and get rid of the crankies. Snacks are a good idea for parents, too. Traffic jams can make everyone a little hangry, so take the edge off with some munchies to tide you over.

3. Bring water! This is critical for every drive you take through the desert (and yes, the high country is

desert, too). Especially in the summer time, it is really easy to get dehydrated. And it usually happens before you’re even aware of it. The rule of thumb is that if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. So take plenty of water, plus extra (more than you think you’ll need), because you never know when you might get stuck.

4. Bring entertainment to keep fidgety young ones busy. As I mentioned, we always let Ladybug pick out a few favorite toys that are easy to carry and entertaining in the car. Movies are a great idea, if you have a portable DVD player or an iPad to download digital films. Music and games are also great. Use your imagination to make the trip a sightseeing adventure for your children.

Help them learn about the history and landscape of Arizona, discuss the geology, desert, plant life and animals. Buy some books and learn about our state as a family. There is a ton of information out there and it’s fascinating!

5. Reward your kids for behaving well in the car. I’m sure that parenting books will tell you to avoid this, but really, a little bribe to behave never hurt anyone. Give your child something small – a treat like ice

cream or a cookie, a small toy, a fun souvenir – for behaving well on your car trip. A little reward is a great way to help them control themselves until you reach your final destination and is a small price to pay for a peaceful trip.

STOP AND SEE THE SIGHTS Arizona is a beautiful state and there are wonderful sites to see in every area. Take the time to stop, rest and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.

Here is a list of some of our favorite places to stop along the way: • Montezuma’s Castle National Monument • Fort Verde State Historic Park • Out of Africa Wildlife Park • Verde Canyon Railroad • Tuzigoot National Monument • Jerome State Historic Park These are just a few of the many fantastic places to see in Arizona. Do some research and plan one or two stops to break up the drive. Some take longer than others, so plan your trip accordingly. One of these places may even become your final destination.

BLOCKERS

EIGHTH GRADE

Three parents set out to stop their teenage daughters from losing their virginity in a pact on prom night.

There is so much about Eighth Grade that just works. Writer and director Bo Burnham really ‘gets’ this generation, writing their actions and dialogue in a realistic, non-stereotypical way. It also manages to avoid the pitfalls similar films have, with the main character Kayla (Elsie Fisher) being a character with flaws, but who still manages to feel like a genuine human. The balance of comedy and drama also works, with each scene having the right tone and feelings. Despite some mature content, it is a film that both teenagers and adults will be able to relate to.

Blockers seems like a regular teen sex comedy on the surface, and that probably works to its advantage. The film avoids many of the tropes commonly found in these types of films and has more character than usual. The three leads are very funny (with John Cena probably being the breakout), and the actors that play their daughters are also likable. Some of the romances do feel underdeveloped, and while you can see where they’re coming from, you don’t buy them necessarily. It also doesn’t get past the stigma of studio comedies that seem to require that they have bland cinematography and editing.

But on the whole, Blockers is an entertaining film.

A 13-year-old girl deals with issues of relationships, self-confidence and love during the last week of eighth grade.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Nearly every one of Marvel’s heroes join together to stop the mad titan Thanos from collecting all of the Infinity Stones and prevent an extinction-like event.

I FEEL PRETTY

Infinity War is really more Thanos’ film than it is the Avengers’ film, and the filmmakers take full advantage of that. He is possibly the best villain Marvel has ever had, managing to be both intimidating and emotional at the same time. Emotional is probably the best word to describe this film. Each character, who we’ve spent so much time getting to know, go through some really harsh situations, and the film almost always plays it serious. The entire cast owns their roles, and each probably feel the most ‘real’ they ever have. Alan Silvestri’s score is also amazing, with each bit coming at the right moment. Marvel has a very bright future ahead if films like this are an example of what’s to come.

There is a good message in I Feel Pretty, but a good film is more than just it’s message. The lead character Renee (Amy Schumer) is just plain annoying in both her personalities in the film, coming off unlikable and even creepy with some of her actions. There is also no style to this film at all, giving us very boring looking cinematography, generic editing and music choices. The only thing that stuck out about the ‘look’ was the outlandish designs in the office of the corporation Renee works for, because it was something different to look at. Michelle Williams also had funny moments as the boss of Renee. Overall, I Feel Pretty is very forgettable.
