FOUR-WEEK KRAV MAGA COURSE FOR YOUTH HITS AGAIN! BULLYING IS EVERY CHILD’S AND PARENT’S WORST NIGHTMARE. According to a study conducted by ABC News, more than 30,000 children skip school everyday for fear of being bullied. Bullying is defined as an unwanted and aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Sometimes, it includes

actions such as making threats, spreading rumors and/or attacking someone physically or verbally. Teaching Krav Maga to kids and teens is significant because it is a form of highlevel self-defense system that is suitable to any situation. Phoenix Krav Maga and Fitness teaches this art, but also

makes it more useful by also focusing on non-physical means of defense such as verbal de-escelation. Also add in the fact that they center each lesson on a character building topic, and you have a perfect balance of physical, mental and emotional growth for the student. “Your child should discover easy and simple anti-bullying techniques to prevent and/or protect themselves from shirt grabbing, punching, choking, slapping and the like. It is a great help to build self-confidence.”says chief instructor Matt Numrich of locally based Phx Krav Fit. Here is what one will learn from the Youth Anti Bullying and Character Building Self-Defense Class in Krav Maga: - Learn anti-bullying techniques that focus on verbal de-escalation - Build confidence through team building classes

- Get fit through realistic self-defense training, no experience necessary! - Discover simple self-defense moves that work against adult attackers - Develop flexibility, agility and speed that can help in other sports! In line with this, “Phx Krav Fit” will be having a Youth Anti Bullying and Character Building Self-Defense Class for teens (ages 8-12) at the Anthem Community Center scheduled every Monday and Wednesday of April 10 – May 3; starting at 5:30-6:00pm for $47. A free session will be held the Monday and Wednesday of the third and fifth weeks of April. For more detailed information about the class or to register please call or text Matt Numrich at 623.300.6114 or email him at matt@PhxKravFit.com

ALL-GIRLS ROBOTICS TEAM WINS STATE COMPETITION, HEADS TO WORLD FESTIVAL A TEAM OF SEVEN FIFTH THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE ROBOTICS STUDENTS WAS RECENTLY named one of two winning teams selected to head to the FIRST LEGO League World Festival in Houston, Texas on April 19. The all-girls team of arts students from downtown Phoenix charter school Arizona School for the Arts (ASA) competed against 96 teams in the Arizona State FIRST LEGO League Challenge hosted by the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering on Jan. 14-15. The competition encourages youth to think like scientists and engineers through problem-solving and teamwork. As part of the challenge, the girls developed and constructed – using a laser cutter at CREATE at Arizona Science Center – a special box in which bees can build hives during swarming season. The purpose of the box is to provide an attractive place for bees to live instead of forming hives in people’s homes, where

they are often exterminated. The team also built a robot out of LEGOs and programmed it to complete tasks. The judges awarded the team first place based on their innovative projects as well as their collaboration and cooperation with competing teams. “These students genuinely embody the spirit of gracious professionalism,” said Tracy Ryan, faculty mentor for the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Club at ASA. “They worked very hard and were incredibly inclusive.” The winning “Bee Inspired Team” members are all performing arts students who are thriving in STEM areas. Among them is eighth grader Emma Scully, 14, of Phoenix, who plays the flute and piano, sings in the choir and also has an interest in studying chemical engineering in college. “With our music, we do a lot of performances in front of crowds, so this experience really helped

with the presentation portion of the competition,” Emma said.

build their boxes and practice for the event.

Many studies support the importance of an arts education in contributing to overall academic success. For example, students in sustained arts classes for four or more years score an average of 100 points higher in math and reading on their SATs. At ASA, 33 percent of the 2016 graduating class went into STEM-related areas of study in college.

“It’s an inspiration of our mission coming to life,” Fourlis said. “Our mission is to engage, inspire and educate curious minds through science and The Bee Inspired Team collaborated with our staff to take that to a whole new level.”

“Most of these youth are not arts students when they come to ASA,” said Leah Fregulia, ASA Head of School and CEO. “They are immersed in the arts when they get here as part of their academics and 96 percent of them go on to college, while the remainder go on to arts-related programs and careers.” Arizona Science Center Chief Learning Officer Andi Fourlis, Ed.D. said she is proud of the girls’ success in the competition. The team worked with center staff at the CREATE maker space to

n true Arizona fashion, the real estate market has been hot for a while now. If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines thinking about putting your house on the market, now may be the time and don’t overlook the importance of curb appeal to get buyers through the front the door. In fact, researchers at Texas Tech University found that improving curb appeal may increase the value of a home by as much as 17 percent! On top of that, having a wellmanicured front yard will often result in fewer days on the market.

Most of us have been in the market to purchase a property at one point in our lives and have seen the house that, from the outside at least, appears to be abandoned or run down. Weeds are everywhere, the grass is a lovely shade of brown and the plants leave a lot to be desired. There are some buyers that won’t even get out of the car in these situations. That home’s seller lost a prospective buyer because the front of the home was less than inviting. Buyers make quick determinations on homes, and curb appeal is your only chance to give them an amazing first impression. You don’t have to make a huge investment either. In fact, most realtors will discourage you from such. Little things can go a long way. Take a look at the list below to see

some things you can do to entice those buyers to get out of the car. • Keep up on the little landscaping details like trimming and shaping bushes, mowing the grass, and edging around the porch or driveway. You want it to look manicured and well kept. • Add flowers or flowering plants to bring pops of color into the picture. If there’s no space for planting, add a few colorful pots near the front door. • Speaking of the front door, a relatively recent trend is to paint it a new and fun color or add texture. A simple welcome mat on the front porch is an inexpensive way to make the walk up to the home more inviting. • While the landscaping is important, so is the appearance of the house itself. Think about addressing the minor, deferred maintenance items like fascia board that may have dry rot or chipping paint. All in all, create an inviting and interesting snapshot of your home. By utilizing some of these tips you’ll increase the traffic through your listing and, with a little luck, sell it quickly. Kyle Fouts is a consulting broker for HomeSmart International.

BUSINESS

TIPS FOR BUSINESS CARD BEST PRACTICES

A

s business owners, we all handle tons of business cards as we meet new people, network, hire suppliers and so on.

Here is one major fault that often happens on business cards that can be very frustrating. The company puts their logo, company name, personal name and contact info, but the card doesn’t explain what they do in a few words or a short sentence. For example, what the heck does Allied Elite do? Are they a car rental company, a bank, a concierge company? When we get home from a big networking event and sort through sever-

al dozen cards, we may not remember what that company does, especially after meeting so many people in one day. All we are left with is a mystery card and a name. How often do those cards end up in the dust bin?

It is so easy to add a simple description of your business. For example, my business is Wolfe Creative. I offer graphic design, creative writing and web design, and it says so on my business cards (well, all my marketing material for that matter). That brings us to another item to consider. Just like fashion in clothing, the look of your marketing materials (and

your brand) can go out of style, so you probably need to consider reviewing and redesigning your print material and online look (your brand) at least every five years if not sooner. So here are some other things to remember when designing or re-designing your next business card: • It shouldn’t be too cluttered, leave lots of white space. • Be sure to include your name and contact information. • Add your logo and your brief description.

• The front of the card can be glossy, but the back should not be glossy and have some white space for people to write on. • A picture is worth a thousand words, and is another great way to tell people what you do! Follow these simple rules and you can’t go wrong when presenting your card and your business to potential clients, vendors or strategic partners. HI, MY NAME IS...

PROFILE ON LOCAL BUSINESS: MIKE MAZZAROTTO MY COMPANY & TITLE IS…. Paradox Distillery. Co-owner and distiller. A TYPICAL DAY IN MY LIFE INCLUDES… While I run a distillery, it’s squeezed in with a full time corporate job as well as being a dad. So while not at my ‘normal’ job, some days I’ll be making dinner and helping my daugh-

ter with homework and others I’ll spend hours working at the distillery, after work from my normal job. It can be a juggling act and quite exhausting but rewarding none the less. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING/WORKING IN DEER VALLEY IS… I enjoy the open space and the various areas to bike and hike in Deer Valley. YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE YOU COULD NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING AND WHY... I love cinematography so there’s no way I can really pick a favorite film. But I love any movie, whether a comedy or a drama, that can expand the mind and make you think of all the possibilities outside of one’s own world. MY FAMILY… I’m a single dad with a very smart and independent seven year old girl. THE BUSINESS LESSON I LEARNED THE HARD WAY IS… This is one I think everyone has heard many times over but no matter how much you think something is going to cost, it’ll cost more. ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… Experimentation.

Whether its food, drinks, or life in general, trying out new and unfamiliar things is both exciting and frightening and that’s what makes it worthwhile because I continually discover new things about myself in the process. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… An Airline pilot. Getting a private pilot’s license is still on the bucket list. THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... Nope. THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… My daughter Maya. She makes me strive to be a better person and hopefully I can in turn, be a person she’ll be proud to look up to. THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… Would be completely inappropriate for this column… THE PERFECT DAY WOULD BE… I’ve learned there is no such thing but doing the things you want to do and seeing the end results of your hard work at the end of the day is pretty close to perfect and a great feeling. MY FIRST JOB WAS… As a DJ at a nightclub in Brazil MY LIFE… I was born is Southern California.

I’m the oldest of 3 siblings. At age 13 my family moved to Brazil and I lived there until I was 20 when we all moved back to the US and settled in Phoenix. I have a BS in Information Systems. I’ve had jobs in retail, call centers and professional positions in IT but I’ve always been a tinkerer and maker. My family heritage is heavily rooted in viniculture and that influenced my interest in the art of distillation and spirit making. I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… I’m currently experimenting on creating some small art pieces by making different colored patinas on copper plates using ammonia and other acids. THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS... My daughter. THE ACTOR I WOULD WANT TO PLAY ME IN A MOVIE OF MY LIFE IS... Not sure about an actor playing me but I think it would be interesting to hear Christopher Walken narrate my life. MY DREAM VACATION WOULD BE TO… Visit the Galápagos Islands. MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS... If you believe in a dream, go after it. Do your research, be cautious but don’t quit. And don’t ever let anyone tell you, you can’t achieve what you’ve set out to accomplish.

COVER STORY CRAFT & COCKTAIL NIGHT DEBUT

T

he Hippie Hobby launches its first craft and cocktail night in the Deer Valley community. Founded by Heidi Koffman and Jennifer Racer in 2015 as an every-other-month craft kit subscription box, The Hippie Hobby is expanding to local craft nights throughout the valley. Deer Valley and surrounding areas are a main focus. Heidi states, “Girls nights, craft nights, birthday parties and more - we are about bringing people together. We started at my apartment in Phoenix, with four friends drinking cocktails and making soap almost two years ago. Bringing our Craft and Cocktail night to the public at a local distillery was a no brainer!” The Hippie Hobby intends to partner with Paradox Distillery on a monthly basis and is excited for the cocktail specials they are offering to our crafters! Without further ado, we want to introduce our instructor for our string art class coming May 6, 2017.

MEET THE CRAFT TEACHER Name: Melissa Hamende I am a dress obsessed, music snob with a passion for planning the ultimate night out. I am the proud mom of a quirky 6-year-old named Andrew and three dogs that are convinced they are human. I have been married to my husband Matt for almost 10 years, and in his words I am “pretty quick-witted”. I have I have spent 11 years in public education as a computer teacher, a 5th grade teacher, and currently as a School Data Improvement Specialist. When I retire my goal is to move to a small town, work in a wine tasting room, and eat amazing food. Tell us a little about your love for crafting. I grew up with a mother who was into crafting and had an appreciation for art, something that she made sure to share with her daughters. We were always visiting the Tole Shop in Downtown Glendale to take seasonal craft classes,

Craft And Cocktail Night Details: Craft: String Art Where: Paradox Distillery, 1725 W Williams Dr. #65, Phoenix, AZ 85027 When: May 6, 6pm-9pm Cost: $40 plus cash bar ($5 cocktail specials!) Sign up: Registration required. Please visit TheHippieHobby.com/CraftAndCocktail perusing the aisles of Ben Franklin Crafts, and even taking those free craft instruction sheets from Michaels to help inspire our next project. In high school and college, I ended up working for JoAnn Etc. and Michaels which only fueled my love for crafting. Every day I was surrounded by possibilities and advance knowledge of sales and promotions didn’t hurt either. What’s your worst craft fail? When I worked in a fabric store I was determined to make a quilt. I quickly realized that my attention span and need to be perfect quickly lead to disaster. It is much easier to paint over a mistake than take a seam ripper to an entire blanket. What’s your favorite cocktail? My go-to currently is blueberries, vodka, tonic, and a ton of lime. When you are not crafting what other fun things do you do in your spare time? I love spending time with my 6-year-old, he is perhaps one of the most hilarious people you will meet. You can typically find me exploring new places, planning excursions with my friends, wine/beer tasting with my husband, or searching for and blogging about the ultimate Mac & Cheese Phoenix has to offer with one of my besties. I also love going to concerts and discovering new bands- I firmly believe live music soothes the soul.

EDUCATION

HOW TO FOCUS ON HOMEWORK AND STOP PROCRASTINATING

I

t happens every day. There’s the ever-piling list of things to do. You can continue to sleep in, but it won’t disappear. And while we know you don’t want to hear it, every decision you’re making now impacts your future. Better grades mean more opportunities after high school. We know completing homework can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. There are a few easy changes you can implement now to start seeing improvements today.

TIPS TO FOCUS ON HOMEWORK TIP 1: EXERCISE FIRST Studies show that cardio-based exercises boost your memory and thinking skills. Cardio based means doing something that accelerates your heart rate. This can include jogging, riding a bike, playing a sport or anything you like to do that’s fast-paced. If you exercise right before starting schoolwork, it will get your blood flowing. This will help your brain become more active and ready to focus on homework. TIP 2: SET A ROUTINE In other words, it can be easy to fall behind. But it’s also easy to stay on track if you stick to a schedule. How to Make a Schedule: 1. Get a planner, or use a free online application. 2. Think about your week; include every plan. 3. Be realistic: 4. Stick to your schedule. 5. Keep writing your weekly schedule TIP 3: BE PREPARED If you have to stop what you’re doing to go grab a snack or a notebook, you’re going to get distracted. “Have all the materials you need to work ready to go before you start each day,” said Primavera Online High School Executive Director of Academics Sarah Gamble. TIP 4: ESTABLISH A WORKSPACE We’re not saying you have to go to the store right now and drop hundreds on a desk, chair and supplies. Your workspace doesn’t have to be traditional. But it does need to be a set place in

DEER VALLEY ACADEMY A NONPROFIT CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL

order to better focus on homework. Maybe that place is an office in your home. Or perhaps you have a fuzzy bean bag in your room that you love. TIP 5: REMOVE ALL DISTRACTIONS A distraction is anything that deters you from working on courses. This can range from music to your loud little brother. Let’s take a moment to talk about those smartphones. They’re more detrimental to your homework than you might think. A study showed that having your phone on silent isn’t enough. Small disturbances like a screen notification could increase errors in your work. It also could prolong the time it takes to complete assignments. Here’s why: As a researcher from the study stated, “Although these notifications are generally short in duration, they can prompt... mind-wandering, which has been shown to damage task performance” (PsychCentral). TIP 6: TAKE NOTES Studies show that physically writing on a notebook improves your memory. So if you want to do better on homework and exams, try writing down notes.

“Although we use computers for everything, you are more apt to remember something if you write it down,” said Gamble. “Write words, draw pictures, use color! Anything you do that will allow you to touch what you are learning will help!” TIP 7: TAKE BREAKS The beauty of online school is that you can take breaks whenever you need. Do you have a hard time staying focused for long periods of time? Then break it up. Try studying for 30 minutes at a time. Remove all distractions and set a timer. Once the 30 minutes is up, take a 15-minute break, but do something active! Get up and move around, go for a run. Do something other than sitting. After 15 minutes, you can return ready to focus on homework. See if you can increase to 45 minutes before taking your next 15-minute break.

Reviewed by A.D. Beal KONG: SKULL ISLAND It’s common nowadays that a big budget blockbuster is given to a director that has had only one small indie feature to their name. Skull Island is one of the best examples of that trend in recent memory, as Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings Of Summer) delivers greatly in his sophomore effort. He manages to get great performances out of his cast (lead by Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L Jackson) like he’s been directing films for years. And if you just want to see some big monster battles,

Kong delivers on that too, with special mentions going to the Helicopters VS Kong scene and final battle scene. Most of all, it manages to get me excited for the upcoming MonsterVerse (that will continue in 2019 with Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and 2020 with Kong VS Godzilla). LOGAN After 17 years, both Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart end their runs as Wolverine and Professor X in the X-Men film series. And this is the best way to go out. The two give some of the best performances of their

Citizen Jane

careers, and are joined by Boyd Holbrook and Dafne Keen, the later of which gives one of the best performances by a child actor that I’ve seen. This is also a movie that earns its R rating (you can tell immediately in the opening scene) and uses it perfectly.

of course, the CG perfectly matches the actual lego sets. The Lego Movie series has a great future.

GET OUT It’s always interesting to see someone known for a specific type of genre in Film/TV try another. Comedian Jordan Peele THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE (Key & Peele) not only makes a great directorial debut, but also The Lego Batman Movie may not reach the heights of The a fantastic horror film. It’s the Lego Movie, but it sure does rare modern studio horror film come close. Will Arnett once that builds suspense instead of using continuous jump scares. again gets a ton of laughs as And it’s always nice to see a Batman. The supporting cast also is great, especially Zach horror film with commentary Galifianakis as The Joker. And snuck in.
