FEATURED CHARITY OF THE MONTH

THE SOUTHWEST VETERANS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

T

he Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve business opportunities and enhance the economic environment of Veterans, Veteran Owned and Veteran Supportive businesses in the Southwestern United States.

The Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) organization where all funds other than operational costs benefit selected partner charities. Funds raised at the annual Patriots Ball, as well as a portion of the Chamber’s membership dues, help our community by: * Providing Scholarships to higher education for Veterans and dependents of Veterans disabled or killed in action; and * Granting funds to local non-profit organizations assisting Veterans with a variety of social service needs through our Community Giving program. Q. Why should I donate to the Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce? If you want to thank the veterans who have served, and you appreciate the fact that we live in a free country and a free society with armed forces that ensure we remain a free country, your donation to the Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce is a direct reflection of your appreciation and thanks. Our mission is to create opportunities for veterans to find employment, open new busi-

nesses, and successfully transition into civilian life. The donations we receive enable us to fulfill that mission.

Q. Who will benefit from my donation? We want to help all veterans who have served our country and protected our freedom. Many of those who return from duty are faced with unemployment or simply do not have the skills that make them eligible candidates for the current job market. Your donation helps support our operational costs so we can provide the necessary services and training our veterans need to secure jobs and become productive members of our society. Donation funds go to supporting our job fairs, fundraising efforts, and partner charities whose efforts are focused on supporting veterans. Q. Do I need to be a member to donate? Anyone can donate to the Southwest Veterans Chamber. You do not need to be a member to contribute. We are grateful for your support! Q. What will I get in return for my donation? All of our donors will receive a special Certificate of Appreciation for any donation made to the Southwest Veterans Chamber of Commerce. Plus, all donations are 100% tax deductible. Please contact us for further details. For more information, visit www.southwestveteranschamber.com

CALMING CONCERNS OVER PHOENIX POLICE COVERAGE From the desk of Councilwoman Thelda Williams

RECENTLY, THERE WERE CONCERNS RAISED REGARDING CITY OF PHOENIX POLICE SERVICES. Some information on social media, which was not from the Phoenix Police Department, described areas where police would not respond to, or where there were gaps in coverage. These supposed areas were “outside the seven-mile radius” of the police precincts. This information is not accurate. There was further speculation that the “seven-mile radius” could be something the Phoenix Fire Department uses for coverage around fire stations. This is also not accurate. There is no circular radius restricting fire, or police coverage. The Phoenix Fire Department has stations all over the City of Phoenix and coverage overlaps. There is also a mutual aid agreement the city has with neighboring cities, so there will always be coverage throughout Phoenix. Mutual aid agreements

could mean that fire apparatus from other cities occupy a City of Phoenix fire station in the event Phoenix resources are dedicated to a major event and additional coverage is required. The Phoenix Police Department provides comprehensive patrol and investigative police services to the entire City of Phoenix twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to the Patrol Division, which includes Patrol Officers, Neighborhood Enforcement Officers and Community Action Officers, other police resources patrol and service the entire city. Other patrol support services include Air Support, Motor Traffic Officers, DUI Officers, K9 Officers, and Special Assignments Unit Officers.

Areas and Beats are covered by more than one squad with overlapping hours. In addition to the seven main police stations there are 5 significant substations throughout the City. Phoenix Police Officers start and end

their shifts from theses main stations and substation. During their shifts, Phoenix Police Officers are in the community responding to calls for service, conducting proactive patrols and engaging the community.

The Phoenix Police Department has organized the entire City of Phoenix into Squad Areas and those Squad Areas are organized into Beats. All of these Beats, seven day a week, twenty-four hours a day, have Phoenix Police Officers assigned to them. Multiple times a day these Squad

ONE…TWO… ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR… (Cue the guitars) There’s a place in Phoenix designed to bring out your inner rock star (or inner Mozart, if you prefer). A studio setting where musicians of all

ages learn to pick, pluck, and play. Welcome to Strum University. This talent-rich hub of the North Phoenix music community offers lessons in piano, guitar (acoustic or electric), bass, ukulele, violin, and voice. Their one-on-one instruction in a private studio setting makes it ideal both for beginners as well as for piano lesson dropouts looking to pick up where they left off.

What makes Strum University unique is their commitment to not only teaching music, but also in supporting students with everything from performance tips, songwriting, shopping for an instrument, and even helping put together gig-ready bands. Every one of their instructors is a professional musician with a passion for teaching. Students get top-tier instruction from patient and enthusiastic teachers who love music. Once students build a firm foundation of music, they have the option of signing up for Rock Band. This exclusive hands-on

program allows student musicians to collaborate as a band - with weekly rehearsals, song writing, and professional instruction in areas such as song composition, stage presence, and basic sound engineering. When your band finds its sound, you’ll be performing several times each year at a variety of venues, while continuing to write original music and learn cover songs.

Although performing is not mandatory, Strum University offers a series of performance events that allow individual students to show off their chops in front of a live audience. Students can perform onstage in

Strum’s very own performance theater, or take their talents to open mic nights at local coffee house venues.

Even with no registration fees or longterm commitments, students at Strum University stay an average of two years. That’s great news for parents who are weary of seeing their kids quit their latest activity after a month or two. Lessons are affordable – and the first lesson is always free! Whether you want to learn a new instrument or brush-up on an old one, try a lesson at Strum University. Who knows where the music will take you…

HOW TO CHANGE CORPORATE CULTURE IN SIX STEPS

A

But often as the world and circumstances change, that long-ingrained culture also needs to change – and that’s no easy task.

• STEP 1: Ask what your culture is today. Simon suggests thinking about what you value in terms of six key areas: dominant characteristics; organizational leadership; management of employees; the glue that holds the organization together; strategic emphases; and criteria of success.

“The challenge is that most people live every day without much thought to the patterns and habits that are guiding their daily business life, or even their general life,” says Andi Simon, a corporate anthropologist and author of On the Brink: A Fresh Lens to Take Your Business to New Heights (www.andisimon.com).

• STEP 2: Ask what it should be tomorrow? Consider what you want your culture to become. Should it be less controlling and more empowering? More results oriented or more collegial? Do rules “rule” or are you open for new ideas and empowered staff members?

“In a corporate setting, leaders espouse values, beliefs and expectations so people know what to do and how to get it done. Everything is fine until something begins to change and that culture must change, too.”

• STEP 3: Tell a story. With you staff, tell a story about what the culture is today. “Let them all create a visualization of how you get things done now,” Simon says.

company’s culture plays a significant role in how successful that company will be over the long haul.

Simon suggests any business facing the need for a culture change should try these six steps:

• STEP 4: Visualize tomorrow. What will tomorrow’s culture feel like? How will you get things done? Will people be enabled to make decisions

and risk making mistakes? “Frame this with stories,” Simon says. “They are how the brain takes data and makes sense out of it.” • STEP 5: Create pilot experiments. Through these experiments you can get people to see how the new culture is actually going to feel when they live it. “Set up some small win situations for your folks to test it out,” Simon says. “Think of this as if it is improvisation with good rehearsal time. You are asking people to change what they value, their beliefs and their behaviors. That’s not easy and it’s full of risk.”

about which rituals you will no longer do and which new ones you will introduce,” Simon says. “Be careful, though. Things that didn’t seem important can be very sacred to people when you are taking them away.” “When all is said and done, make sure you keep moving it forward,” Simon says. “People will typically tell you how they love something new and then quickly revert to the old habits even without knowing it.”

• STEP 6: Celebrate. People need symbols and they need to celebrate and share experiences. “You need to seriously think

BARRY GOLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WILL REPRESENT ARIZONA IN DOWN UNDER FOOTBALL BOWL

D

own Under Sports is pleased to announce that Barry Goldwater High School Senior Benjamin Smith has been invited to represent his home state of Arizona at the 30th Annual 2018 Down Under Football Bowl in Australia this summer.

A stellar athlete since a young age, Ben wrapped up his high school football career in October with some amazing stats. Playing as QB, fullback, tailback, WR, corner safety, linebacker, punter, and kickoff and punt returner, he finished on defense with 111 tackles, 4 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles and recoveries. On offense, over 1500 rushing yards, 203 receiving yards, 363 passing and 3015 all purpose yards. His 27 high school career touchdowns “will go down as

the most career touchdowns in recorded school history”. Coach Nate McWhorter states “Ben is a kid who is hard to sum up in words, really. You watch him play and he’s so smart, smooth and tough as nails. Then you meet him off the field and he’s one of the most laid back, genuine and down to earth 18 year-olds you’ll ever meet. On the field his switch flips and he’s an extremely passionate, fierce competitor and an outstanding teammate. It really was an honor to have coached him

and we’re excited to see what his future holds.” Ben departs for the land down under on June 24th. This exciting opportunity is just the beginning for Ben who hopes to attend Northern Arizona University in the fall. Good luck Ben!

PVCC AT BLACK MOUNTAIN MAKES STEAM FUN AT STEAMTASTIC

O

n March 8, Paradise Valley Community College at Black Mountain will host the fifth annual STEAMtastic, an AZ SciTech Signature event. The event uses an innovative, hands-on, approach to promoting science, technology, engineering, arts, and math education. The goal of the event is to make STEAM fun by showing attendees how science, technology, engineering, arts, and math are a part of their everyday life. We hope to encourage them to further explore these fields and view STEAM careers as attainable.

Event activities are intentionally selected to showcase STEAM fields and make STEAM accessible to both volunteers and community members of varied ages and backgrounds. “STEAMtastic and our Star Parties provide a great out-ofclassroom learning opportunity. Stepping onto a college campus can be scary, but we have young students who have been coming to STEAMtastic for the past 4 years, and they now come with their friends and classmates,” said Loretta Mondragon, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at Paradise Valley

Community College. “They know that this college is theirs too and are looking forward to taking classes with us. It’s great to see these young people value education and, for the college, it’s part of our effort to drive positive social change through their educational journey.” On March 8, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, the PVCC at Black Mountain campus will be transformed. Over eighty STEAM-related activities will be available for attendees to see, touch, smell, and taste. You can make your own bubble gum, extract DNA from a strawberry, and practice your fingerprinting skills. In addition you can learn what a Tubulum is and check out a Rube Goldberg machine designed by the PVCC Honors students. “The projects I saw were absolutely incredible,” said Vincent Jacovo, an event attendee, age 13. “I got to participate in many different experiments and ate some

SPRING BREAK IN PHOENIX 2018 – ENJOY PERFECT SPRING BREAK WEATHER IN THE SONORAN DESERT By Jill “MamaBug” Frier Many college students everywhere are preparing to head to a beach or lake on traditional Spring Break road trips, so why not take advantage of the best weather in the country while those students are out of town? The Sonoran Desert makes a perfect vacation spot during the winter and spring months and gives you the opportunity to make a quick getaway with your family while your kids are out of school. GETAWAY TO TUCSON It’s always surprising to hear how many Phoenicians have never spent time in Tucson. Just a short distance south of the Phoenix metropolitan area is a charming gem of southwestern sights to see. The hotels and resorts are

plentiful, but our advice: do your research. Tucson is much more that what you see driving down the highway – the I-10 just doesn’t do it justice. Here are our favorite spots to visit while in Tucson. You probably can’t see them all in one weekend, so it’s best to pick an area you like and try a few spots to see while you are in that part of town. Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum It’s a zoo. It’s a museum. It’s a botanic garden. It’s all of the above! This state of the art facility is a must-see if you are in Tucson – and worth planning a trip just to go there on the weekend. Old Tucson Studios Ever wonder where they made your favorite Western? It was probably here. Right down the road from the Arizona Desert Museum, more than 400 movies have been produced at Old Tucson over the years - and they’re still going strong. With live entertainment, rides, tours and plenty to see, this is a great place to visit. Saguaro National Park – East and West Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in Arizona are found in both the east and west sides of the Saguaro National Park. Idyllic vistas of the pristine Sonoran Desert, mountain ecosystems, petroglyphs and everything the desert has to offer are available in two completely different parks with the same purpose – preserving the mighty Sonoran Desert and it’s Saguaros.

Kartchner Caverns State Park Love fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas? Then you’ll love visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park. Located southeast of Tucson, you can camp, hike and of course tour the caverns. Book your cave tour tickets in advance – they book up tours very quickly. These are just a few of our favorite places to visit, but there are many more. Other must see locations while you are in Tucson include: • Pima Air and Space Museum • Sabino Canyon • Catalina State Park • Biosphere 2 TRY OUT TEMPE & SCOTTSDALE Not ready to hit the road or looking for something a bit closer to home? Look no further than Tempe, Scottsdale or downtown Phoenix. Resorts and hotels are plentiful in each of these cities and make for a great “staycation,” when you want to get away but not drive very far from home. And there are plenty of fantastic sights to see to keep you entertained. Here are some of our favorite sightseeing spots in the Valley of the Sun - the places unique to Phoenix that you must take visitors and should definitely visit yourself: Desert Botanical Garden The Desert Botanical Garden is a oneof-a-kind experience in Phoenix. Take a walk through the garden and experience the unique beauty and majesty of the Sonoran Desert in the middle of the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Phoenix Zoo Located right next door to the Desert Botanic Garden, the Phoenix Zoo is a world class zoo in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. A must see for people of all ages, the zoo is a wonderful and unique Arizona treat. Heard Museum A world-class museum unlike any other, the Heard Museum in downtown Phoenix is recognized internationally for the quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming and its unmatched festivals. The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art, and is a must see for anyone interested in the heritage and culture of our city and state. These are just three of our favorite places to visit and take visitors to see in the Valley. There are so many more that it’s difficult to list them all, but be sure to check out some of these places, too: • Arizona Science Center • Old Town Scottsdale • OdySea Aquarium • Musical Instrument Museum • Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium Whatever you decided to do during spring break this year, we hope you have a great time and get a chance to see something new and different. Spend time checking out the fascinating spots in your area whenever you have the chance – I can assure you that they are worth the trip! Be sure to check out Ladybug’s Blog for more fun things to do with kids everywhere in Arizona!

REAL ESTATE

SHOPPING FOR A HOME WHEN INVENTORY IS LOW By Shelley Sakala

W

e are living in interesting times… Is this a buyer’s market or a seller’s market? It depends on your price point. What we are experiencing in Phoenix are several micro-markets driven by price. If your price range is $400,000+, the selection is good right now - but if you’re looking for a more budgetconscious house it’s slim pickings. Inventory priced between $100,000$200,000 is extremely limited. This

creates competition for available properties, driving up prices toward the high end of the low end. A house that might normally list at $195,000 is now selling for $210,000, which is above budget for some buyers. This, of course, leaves even fewer homes for buyers in the lower price range. When demand exceeds supply, it’s important for buyers to be savvy and strategic as they shop. The pie is smaller, and everyone wants their slice. And while money talks, the highest bidder doesn’t always get the house. Here are five ways to increase your chances of landing the home you want when competition is fierce: 1. Show up ready. Get yourself pre-qualified for a home loan. This lets the seller know you’re not only serious about buying a home, but you’ve got the means to make it happen with the least possible de-

THE MOST RECOGNIZED NAME IN NORTH PHOENIX REAL ESTATE

lay. No seller wants to go through the entire selling process only to find out in the 11th hour that the seller didn’t qualify for a loan. 2. Be serious about your offer. If a house is listed at $200,000 and you offer $100,000 “just to see what happens,” you won’t be taken seriously and the seller will move on to the next buyer. Don’t let your desire for a good deal get in the way of a fair deal. 3. No new loans, cars, or credit cards. Buyers who were otherwise prequalified for a home loan can be denied their loans because they made a huge purchase or opened up a new line of credit before closing on their house (a red flag for lenders). Even if you have the means to afford it, hold off on making significant financial transactions until after your closing date. 4. Be realistic with your expectations. There’s a big difference between a hole in the roof and a carpet color you

don’t like. Presenting the seller with a laundry list of things to “fix” can sabotage a deal. It’s fine to create a list of reasonable dealbreakers, but don’t get carried away. If it (or you) become more trouble than it’s worth, you risk losing the house to another buyer. 5. Work with an experienced Realtor. When it comes to buying & selling houses, Realtors know more than the average person. They have better resources, as well as access to more information. With hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, you owe it to yourself to work with someone who does this for a living - not as a hobby. Stick to these five simple rules and you’ll be well on your way to finding the home of your dreams at the price you want. Shelley Sakala is a Realtor with HomeSmart Elite and a resident of North Phoenix.

REAL ESTATE

TRUTHS, HALF TRUTHS AND STORIES IN PHOENIX REAL ESTATE By Chris Keeley

“W

e are almost out of Industrial Inventory for purchase in the industrial sector in Deer Valley Airpark.” This is true. Even though there was about 1 million new square feet added to industrial market over the last 18 months, there are almost no properties left to purchase in the industrial market between 4,000 and 20,000 square feet.

“Lease rates in the industrial sector have fully recovered from the recession of 2007 to 2016.” This is mostly true. Industrial leasing rates are back to about $0.75 psf (NNN) on an average that is pretty close to the numbers of 2006.

“Industrial land pricing has fully recovered to pre-recession prices.” This is not true. Though industrial land pricing has seen a significant jump, we are only about 50% back to pre-recession pricing. During the full recession, land prices dropped to $0.10 to the dollar in Deer Valley Airpark. Land that previously sold for $14 per square foot could be had for 1/10 of that price during the recession and even at that pricing there were little to no takers. Those prices have now climbed back to $7 to $8 psf today. “The recession hurt land pricing greater than building pricing.” This is true. Though industrial building pricing fell significantly in general those buildings could be purchased for about 50% of previous values but land fell to 10% of previous values. “Residential developers are prepar-

ing large projects along 19th Avenue Northwest of Happy Valley Road.” This is True. “The auto mall planned along Interstate 17 just North of Loop 303 is still in the process.” Maybe. There is a rumor that it might be resurrected. “A new monster retail mall along the West side of Interstate 17 South of Carefree Highway may be in the works.” This is only a rumor so far. Fake News? We’ve all heard of fake news in today’s world. Well here’s what all real estate brokers will tell you about that. There might be fake news, maybe, but there are definitely fake investors, buyers and clients out there. Every one of us, if you’ve been in the business long enough, has or will run into the “Big Spender” that doesn’t have any intention of buying a thing.

We’ve all heard the story of the old farmer that walked into the Mercedes dealership in his overalls and no sales person wanted to deal with him, so they sent the rookie to waste his time. Of course the farmer bought three of the most expensive Mercedes Benz with cash right then and there. It’s a great story and every one of us brokers will give the benefit of the doubt if there’s a client out there with big plans to make big deals. Even if the picture doesn’t look right. You never know right? Better to be the rookie than the salesman

I’m not ashamed to say I’ve given more than one of these clients my time and attention. Like I said, you never know right? And you always have to let it run its course until the truth comes out. But my biggest question is; what’s the end game with these people? They’ve never received anything from me except my time and energy. They never had intentions of buying anything. Is it an ego thing? The few times I’ve been involved with these Fake Clients they also invested their time and energy. And when it’s all said and done, and we’ve discovered they never had any money to begin with I ask; what was it all for? What was in it for them? I don’t think I’ll ever know. I’ve asked plenty of other brokers Providing logical, caring solutions for: and not one has an anAnts  Rats  Roaches swer. On occasion I’ve heard of the investor  Pigeons  Scorpions  Termites ask to borrow money from the broker and I understand that was their end game but most Fake Clients just go away in time. In the end it was just a total waste of everyone’s time and effort. If you have the answer I sure would like to know.

HOME & LIFE

BUGSY SAYS… ALL RODENTS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL By Paul Reevs Eco-Logic Management

Y

ou just hung up the phone with Uncle Joe in New York and are still gloating that, while he complained of having to shovel his walk for the third time, you are enjoying shorts and tee-shirt weather and decide to sit on your patio and soak up some sun. You’ve just settled into your comfortable chaise lounge and look across your nicely landscaped yard. As you admire the freshly trimmed desert botanicals, you suddenly notice several holes around your yard. What in the world is that?! You walk over to inspect the unsightly holes and figure out you have a new uninvited neighbor. Disturbing, yes but not the end of the world. You decide to fire up the jacuzzi to take a relaxing dip and as you begin setting up the pool equipment, you notice that the wires on your heater have been chewed right through. So much for relaxation today. I think it’s time to deal with this pest. These are troubling and expensive outcomes that are likely because a rodent living in your midst. This month we will begin a three-part discussion on the rodents you are likely dealing with and ways to avoid or rid yourself of their damaging behavior. Pocket gophers are stocky rodents 5 to 7 inches long with a short tail that

has sparse fur on it. These guys have a wide head, very small eyes and ears, strongly clawed front feet which are well suited for digging. They are called pocket gophers due to their fur-lined cheek pouches or “pockets”. These are used to transport food. Pocket gophers have pale to dark brown soft fur. You’re probably familiar with their living conditions which are plugged holes in your yard. Unlike the rats, they close their nest entrance with mud and only open it to exit or allow air into the den. When they dig their burrow, they fling dirt in a “fan shape” around the hole. There are many theories of how to get rid of pocket gophers but, in all the research I’ve done, many fail. Flooding burrows and laying bait are not the most effective way to get to these critters as they create their dens to be water proof and for food storage. We have had success with our unique “gopher gasser” that injects carbon monoxide into the burrow and quickly creates a deadly atmosphere that puts the rodent to sleep once and for all. Adding moth balls (camphor) into the burrow before closing it up also helps repel any future residents who might move into the now vacant home. I hope these tips offer you some ideas on how to keep your yard and home rodent-free. Next month we will be discussing pack rats and what you can do to deal with them. As monthly contributors to this publication, we aim

to share our advice, experiences and we are sure you will find each month’s discussion one you can benefit from. If you have questions, comments or

wish to share a pest related story, contact Eco-Logic Management Inc. at paul@ecologicmgmt.com or feel free to call us at (480) 513-1989. Ask for Michael, Paul or Ken.

THREE STEPS TO SPRING CLEANING: SELL, DONATE & TOSS By Rowlan Hill Owner of Blue Leaf Estate Auctions

D

id you know? March 5-11 is National Spring Cleaning Week!

For some of us, the phrase “Spring Cleaning” can send us into an unwanted state of panic. Flashes of that one cluttered closet may come to mind and completely discourage you from the seasonal tidying trend. The key is to know when to sell, donate or toss unwanted items. Before you give up, we have a formula to help you tackle this overwhelming task. WHEN TO SELL: Even with convenient apps and websites, selling can be a time-consuming task, so first you need to determine how much time you want to dedicate to selling. What are you more willing to give up, time or money? You need to determine the need to make money versus just wanting to declutter. Do what’s best for you and stick to your ultimate goal. Next determine if there is a demand for the item. Great

things to sell include: electronics, antiques, watches, bicycles, trendy fashion pieces and Legos. Finally, it is time to sell. Make sure you prepare the object properly, this means cleaning, photographing, listing the item on social media, and delivering the item. WHEN TO DONATE: Donating can be difficult, because the hardest part is being honest with yourself. Will you actually wear that sweater your grandma gave you in 2014? If the answer is no, it is time to consider donating the item. Don’t feel guilty! These items are going to help others in need and increase their quality of life. So, what are good items to donate? Donate things that are in great condition but are not worth the time of selling, for instance: clothes, toiletries, blankets, luggage and school supplies. WHEN TO TOSS: Congratulations, you have made it to the final step of Spring Cleaning. You are now left with the items that are not worth selling and cannot be donated, so now it is time to toss.

Letting go of material objects will not only organize your home but help clear your mind. Stop holding onto things you don’t need and feel the weight being lifted off your shoulders! NEED TO SELL A HOUSE FULL OF ITEMS BUT DON’T WANT THE HASSLE? Consider using an estate auction company. Our professionals come in and liquidate the entire contents of the house in a few hours in a live auction setting, and we bring the crowds to you. For more information, visit Blue Leaf Estate Auctions at http://602blue.com/ Rowlan Hill is the owner of Blue Leaf Estate Auctions in Arizona and has been an auctioneer for over 30 years. not given any depth outside of “creepy child in danger of the ghosts”. There is some haunting cinematography in the film, with the production design perfectly capturing the look and creepiness of the house….until we see the horrible CGI exteriors of the house.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s (Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love) new film is strange, disturbing and even funny in a few moments. The relationship between our leads, Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and Alma (Krieps), is one which sometimes feels genuine, and other times you’re amazed that these two are still together. Day-Lewis is great of course, and it’s sad that this could be his last role. But wow, Krieps steals the show, portraying a character that is both warm and devious. Beyond that, the cinematography (which was supposedly done by Anderson himself) is gorgeous, and the way it sometimes goes out of focus really makes you feel like you’re seeing through the eyes of Woodcock. The film’s costume design can also not go without mention. Every stunning piece of clothing that the characters wear matches both the scene and color palette perfectly. And despite some moments where it could be taken out, Jonny Greenwood’s score is beautiful, especially the main theme named after the film itself and its variations.

MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE

A Wrinkle In Time

WINCHESTER

HOSTILES

PHANTOM THREAD

This film focuses on the strange relationship of a dressmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) and a waitress turned model (Vicky Krieps).

Inspired by true events, a doctor (Jason Clarke) investigates Sarah Winchester’s (Helen Mirren) claims of being haunted by the ghosts of those killed by her company’s rifle. The idea of a film based on the famous Winchester house is very interesting and open to several creative ideas, so it’s a shame that all Winchester has to offer is a generic haunted house film. Mirren is perfectly cast as the widowed Winchester, and Clarke is great as always, even if it does ham it up a bit more than usual. But unfortunately, that’s where the good of the film stops. Most of the scares in the film are jump scares, and while some work, they get tiring after a while. There are also entirely too many “false” scares as well. The rest of the cast also doesn’t do the film any favors, with the child character Henry

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), along with the remaining ‘gladers’ plan a final siege on WCKD’s base of operations, where they hope to save a captured friend.

Gringo

If there’s something the Maze Runner films have always been consistent in, it’s the direction and staging of set pieces that Wes Ball gives us. The action is edited smoothly, with most usage of handheld cam not feeling distracting, and the choreography is well done. Unfortunately, Ball also seems to be a director that needs to be given a better script, as most of the main actors are let down by the dialogue, and come off as bland. What’s even sadder is that the few genuinely good performances, such as Giancarlo Esposito and Walton Goggins, aren’t given as much screen time. In the film’s defense though, for having only a $62 million dollar budget, it’s effects are very good…even better than some that have 3 times that budget.

The Death Of Stalin (Limited)

In 1892, an army captain transports a dying Cheyenne chief and his family to his final resting place, where several dangers await them. Hostiles is a slow burn, one where its pacing sometimes works and other times doesn’t. But when it works, it really does work. Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, Wes Studi and Adam Beach are all great in their roles, and while the supporting cast may not be as good as their leading counterparts, director Scott Cooper at least tries to give them a good amount of development through scenes of their own. I also applaud Cooper for not flinching with the violence, showing the harsh realities of the old west. The fact that Masanobu Takayanagi has been overlooked in the cinematography awards race is a real shame.
