IKID’s history stemmed from one individual’s overwhelming concern for the lack of services provided for children in the mental health field and the many serious issues that were not being properly addressed. Sue Gilbertson began her quest in 1984 when her son, Eric, was diagnosed with mental illness. In trying to get assistance for her son, Ms. Gilbertson found herself amidst a conventional medical community that was simply not equipped to handle the problems her son was facing. She was confronted with a community that was indifferent and uncooperative to her needs.

Ms. Gilbertson later came to realize that her struggles were not isolated incidents. She met other families facing similar situations in requesting help for their children who had behavioral health challenges. Sue took on the responsibility of uniting these families and worked together with them to build a better mental health system for the children of Arizona. Through the efforts of Ms. Gilbertson, families were first brought together in a support group on March 11, 1987. This led to the formation of MIKID. Today, MIKID employs 125+ professionally trained staff offering an array of services to families of children with emotional and behavioral challenges. Last year MIKID served families in 76 Arizona cities and towns, reaching 2700 children, youth and families through the various programs and services available. MIKID provides education, resources, and support to hundreds of Arizona families annually.

MIKID’s mission is to improve the behavioral health and wellness of children and youth through a family-centered approach. This is done through licensed clinical outpatient clinics in Kingman, Phoenix, Casa Grande, Tucson, Nogales, and Yuma, and in the homes and communities of families statewide. Services can include: respite for the families while children and youth participate in structured activities in the community; living skills training to build life and positive coping skills for children and youth; transition-age youth services that prepare youth ages 1325 for adulthood; Family Support services for parents and caregivers to aid them in navigating the mental health,

child welfare, special education, and/or juvenile justice systems; Peer Support and leadership groups for teens; Parent Support Now (PSN) which supports families that have children in the custody of the Department of Child Safety (DCS); and Prevention training for schools and community groups utilizing evidence-based curriculum, including Signs of Suicide (SOS), Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA), and safeTALK (Suicide Alertness for Everyone).

MIKID’s direct services are available for free to families that have, or are eligible for, AHCCCS/Medicaid. With grant funding and donations, MIKID is able to serve families that do not qualify for AHCCCS. Grants and donations also allow MIKID to provide the Prevention training free to schools and community groups across the state.

With community support, MIKID will be able to continue to offer these services for free to families that are in need of support for their children struggling with mental illness and behavioral health challenges, and to communities that want to be educated in ways to prevent suicide and support children and youth with mental health needs.

NEW NORTERRA K-8 SCHOOL APPROVED: UNION PARK SCHOOL

AS OF FEBRUARY 2018, THE PHOENIX METRO AREA MADE THE CUT ON FORBES MAGAZINE’S LIST OF “AMERICA’S FASTESTGROWING CITIES 2018.” However, growth comes with serious responsibilities in terms of expanding and maintaining the proper infrastructure. Highways and roads are only one consideration though. Leaders in these rapidly developing communities also need to be conscious of having sufficient services in place, such as schools, libraries, hospitals, etc., to support a burgeoning population.

The Norterra neighborhood of North Phoenix is experiencing unprecedented prosperity. Planning and hoping to stay ahead of the projected population increase, the School Board for the Deer Valley Unified School District approved on January 8, 2019 the construction of a new K-8 school.

“I’m just so excited about the opportunity to provide for more families in a new community,” said Deer Valley Unified School Board President Ann Ordway. “With the great learning experiences we provide our students in Deer Valley, it’s going to be awesome.”

The neighborhood is anchored by two major entities: The Shops at Norterra and the USAA Corporate Campus, which owns the swath of land encircling much of its office complex. Current and future development planned by USAA will include the following offerings: retail, office, mixed use space and, of

course, new homes are definitely in the works. In addition to existing residential choices in Norterra, the residential portion of USAA’s Union Park, a high-end master-planned community, came online in December 2018.

According to the residential website for the new community: “Union Park at Norterra’s proposed master plan includes 1,100 single-family homes, 1,100 multi-family units, a hotel, office space, a school site, and a retail corridor of specialty restaurants, shopping and outdoor gathering areas.”

The reference to “a school site” denotes the land that’s been earmarked for the construction of the new K-8 Union Park School. Norterra Canyon School and Sonoran Foothills School, both K-8 schools serving the area, are, at present-day, almost full. Consequently, the new Union Park School is clearly needed in order to support and make this tremendous scale of growth possible. Based on the most available data, though, school officials don’t anticipate the need to construct a new high school, but should the expected population numbers change, the Deer Valley Unified School District has retained land for this purpose.

“It’s always great to be the community school,” said Ordway. “The sense of community is really what makes the world go round, so if your school is the heart of the community, then it’s all up from there.”

Back in 2013, Deer Valley School Officials must have foreseen an extraordinary degree of future growth in the area, because a bond election was held for the sole purpose of financing a new school. The bond passed, and now this money

will fund the Union Park School project, which will carry two different start times. Once 100 houses in USAA’s Union Park have sold, architects will go to work designing the new school, and once 200 additional houses have sold, engineers and construction workers will break ground.

As for USAA’s role in this process, it was significant given the fact that the land belonged to them. Of course, it was to everyone’s benefit to see the fulfillment of a brand new school. Therefore, instead of doing a strict monetary transaction, they decided to trade land for land.

Not far away, at 43rd Avenue and Alameda Road, the Deer Valley Unified School District owned a 14 acre plot of land. Since this land hadn’t been designated for any upcoming building projects, the School Board decided it was worth giving up in order to build the school they needed in Norterra.

Therefore, they traded their land with USAA for their 12 acre tract of land that will soon be home to the future Union Park School. Rounding out the agreement, for USAA’s part, they’ve agreed to install roads where the new school will be built.

“I like being able to serve kids,” said Ordway, “and make sure they can go into a school that’s going to really promote their academic, social and emotional needs. And when they have a real community place to learn, I can’t think of anything better than that.”

$575 MILLION SETTLEMENT WITH WELLS FARGO

AGREEMENT RESOLVES STATE CONSUMER PROTECTION CLAIMS FOR ALLEGED UNFAIR AND DECEPTIVE TRADE PRACTICES IN 50 STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ATTORNEY GENERAL MARK BRNOVICH ANNOUNCED WELLS FARGO BANK N.A. WILL PAY A TOTAL OF $575 MILLION, INCLUDING $37.1 MILLION TO ARIZONA, to resolve claims that the bank violated state consumer protection laws by (1) opening millions of unauthorized accounts and enrolling customers into online banking services without their knowledge or consent, (2) improperly referring customers for enrollment in third-party renters and life insurance policies, (3) improperly charging auto loan customers for force-placed and unnecessary collateral protection insurance, (4) failing to ensure that customers received refunds of unearned premiums on certain optional auto finance products, and (5) incorrectly charging customers for mortgage rate lock extension fees.

Arizona will receive $37.1 million, the third-highest amount under the nationwide settlement. The funds will be used by the Attorney General’s Office to help further strengthen consumer protection enforcement efforts, as well as pay for the state’s attorneys’ fees. Arizona was a lead state of the executive committee that helped negotiate the settlement on behalf of the parties involved.

“Arizonans suffered the second highest number of Wells Fargo sales practice violations in the country,” said Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

“Wells Fargo’s egregious behavior towards Arizona consumers was particularly offensive, and it’s why I wanted to make sure our office was one of the four head states leading the investigation. This settlement holds Wells Fargo accountable for their previous actions and will deter similar future activity by other banks and financial institutions.”

Fargo will also create a consumer redress review program through which consumers, who have not been made whole through other restitution programs already in place, can seek review of their inquiry or complaint by a bank escalation team for possible relief. To date, this settlement represents the most significant engagement involving a national bank by state attorneys general acting without a federal law enforcement partner.

Wells Fargo has identified more than 3.5 million accounts where customer accounts were opened, funds were transferred, credit card applications were filed, and debit cards were issued without the customers’ knowledge or consent. The bank has also identified 528,000 online bill pay enrollments nationwide that may have resulted from improper sales practices at the bank. In addition, Wells Fargo improperly submitted more than 6,500 renters insurance and/or simplified term life insurance policy applications and payments from customer accounts without the customers’ knowledge or consent.

The states alleged Wells Fargo imposed aggressive and unrealistic sales goals on bank employees and implemented an incentive compensation program where employees could qualify for credit by selling certain products to customers. The states further alleged the bank’s sales goals and the incentive compensation program created an impetus for employees to engage in improper sales practices in order to satisfy such sales goals and earn financial rewards. Those sales goals became increasingly harder to achieve over time, the states alleged, and employees who failed to meet them faced potential termination and career-hindering criticism from their supervisors.

The states also alleged Wells Fargo improperly charged premiums, interest, and fees for force-placed collateral protection insurance to more than two million auto financing customers, despite evidence that the customers’ regular auto insurance policy was in effect, and despite numerous customer complaints about such unnecessary placements.

- Attorney General Mark Brnovich remediation of more than $385 million to approximately 850,000 auto finance customers. The remediation will include payments to over 51,000 customers whose cars were repossessed.

Additionally, the states alleged Wells Fargo failed to ensure that customers received proper refunds of unearned portions of optional Guaranteed Asset/Auto Protection (GAP) products sold as part of motor vehicle financing agreements. As a result, the bank has agreed to provide refunds totaling more than $37 million to certain auto finance customers.

Finally, the states alleged Wells Fargo improperly charged residential mortgage loan consumers for rate lock extension fees, even when the delay was caused by Wells Fargo, a practice contrary to the bank’s policy. Wells Fargo has identified and contacted affected consumers and has refunded or agreed to refund over $100 million of such fees.

Additionally, under an order from the Federal Reserve, the bank is required to strengthen its corporate governance and controls and is currently restricted from exceeding its total asset size.

As part of its settlement with the states, Wells Fargo has agreed to implement within 60 days a program through which consumers who believe they were affected by the bank’s conduct but fell outside the prior restitution programs, can contact Wells Fargo to be reviewed for potential redress. Wells Fargo will create and maintain a website for consumers to use to access the program and will provide periodic reports to the states about ongoing restitution efforts.

More information on the redress review program, including Wells Fargo escalation phone numbers and the Wells Fargo dedicated website address for the program, will be available on or before February 26, 2019.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO COMPOSTING IN PHOENIX WHAT IS COMPOST? Compost is organic material that has decomposed. It is made by combining “green” items like food scraps and grass cuttings with “brown” items like leaves and wood chips, which then break down over time. The resulting material is nutrient-rich and can be used in gardens as a soil conditioner and natural pesticide.

WHY COMPOST? Organic matter like food, food-soiled paper, and yard waste is more than a third of what gets thrown into the garbage. When sent to the landfill, it creates methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Backyard composting or with a local program protects our environment, saves landfill space, creates jobs, and enriches soil. And it’s easier than you might think!

PARTICIPATE IN A LOCAL COMPOSTING PROGRAM OR DIY The City of Phoenix runs a municipal composting facility that processes yard waste. You can sign up for a curbside green bin that accepts grass clippings, branches, and shrubs.

If you want to compost food and food-soiled paper, Recycled City is the area’s local community composter. For only $10/month, they accept a variety of compostable waste, such as food, meat, dairy, napkins, and paper plates, and even pet food and hair trimmings.

TYPES OF HOME COMPOSTERS With a small investment you can turn your compostable scraps into nutrient-rich soil at home. There are several different home composters:

• Manufactured compost bins, typically made out of plastic • Compost tumblers that can be easily turned • Wooden and pallet bins with compartments • Worm composting (vermicomposting) WHAT TO PUT IN THE COMPOST To get started follow these steps: Step 1: Collect your “brown” and “green” compostable material a. “Browns” – dry materials like wood chips, dried leaves, grass, and plants. It works even better when you rip or cut items into smaller pieces. b. “Greens” – fresh, moist materials like grass cuttings and food scraps.

Step 2: Put an approximately equal amount of browns and greens into your composter. To ensure that your pile does not smell, add more browns (1 part green, 2 parts brown).

Step 3: Soak the pile with water, but don’t over soak.

It should be as damp as a wrung-out sponge.

Step 4: Wait a week, then add water, turn, and stir the pile.

WHAT ABOUT TAKEOUT CONTAINERS AND COMPOSTABLE PRODUCTS? This means a product has been tested to revert to carbon dioxide, water, inorganic compounds, and biomass at a rate similar to paper.

Compostable products can be made from renewable plant fibers, wood paper, or compostable plastics.

Products made from plant fibers or paper are not certified to break down at home, but you can experiment to see how they perform in your system. It helps to cut or rip them into smaller pieces. Compostable plastics should not be put into your home composting system, since they require higher heat to break down.

Once you have an outdoor composter and a kitchen container for collecting material, you’ll be well on your way to turning waste into black gold.

Step 5: Keep adding, soaking, and stirring! Your compost should be ready in 3-6 months.

Many home composting systems are not well-suited for dairy, fish, meats, fats, or oil/grease, as these products take longer to break down and can attract pests.

HOW TO COLLECT COMPOSTABLES IN YOUR KITCHEN Collecting food and food-soiled paper in your kitchen doesn’t have to be a hassle. There are many types of countertop containers, which you can line with a certified compostable bag, or rinse to keep clean. As you clean up, you can scrape leftovers directly into the bin. Once the container is full, dump it into your outdoor collection bin or composting system. During the warmer months, you can keep your food scraps in the fridge, where they won’t smell or attract fruit flies.

FIXING ISSUES LIKE ODORS OR PESTS Home composting is easy, but there a few common issues that first-time composters run into: • Funny smells? Turn the pile and add some browns • Pile too dry? Spray some water, add in greens, and mix • Fruit flies? Stir and add leaves or grass • Insects, raccoons, rats? There might be some meat or fatty food scraps in your bin. First, remove the

Overbearing parents, over-the-top coaches and overzealous competition are frequent images associated with youth-athletic leagues today. Though playing ball often used to embody the enjoyment of being a kid, the experience for many youngsters is too serious and stressful – and ultimately not worth it.

One study revealed 70 percent of U.S. children drop out of organized sports by age 13, with pressure and burnout among the main reasons cited.

“The politics, as well as the overemphasis adults put on kids to see a college scholarship as the ultimate goal, is ruining a kid’s ability to get the most out of sports,” says Maya Castro, author of The Bubble: Everything I Learned as a Target of the Political, and Often Corrupt, World of Youth Sports (www. thebubbleweb.com).

“This over-emphasis has created an environment amongst the parents and coaches that is similar to a mafia.

We badly need changes in this toxic, political and corrupt environment. And it must start with the parents.”

ENJOY THE MOMENT Too many parents and their young athletes are fretting the future. “Too often it’s all about winning and getting the scholarship,” Castro says, “but my parents told me there was a time when kids actually enjoyed playing for the sake of playing, and parents won just by getting to watch them play. We need to get back to that. Without it, memories are wasted.”

Castro, who says her own experience as a young soccer player was tainted by misguided and misbehaving adults, offers ideas on how adults can improve the youth-sports culture:

BE ENCOURAGING “Celebrate the effort, not just the result,” Castro says. “This goes for youth coaches as well as parents. When kids do some good things, don’t let the mistakes cloud your post-game comments. Be honest in discussing room for improvement, but not at the expense of making them feel like they have to play perfectly to get praise.”

STRIVE TO BE A MENTOR Castro says parents and coaches have a great opportunity to use sports as a teaching tool for life. “The learning aspect of the game needs to be the focal point of youth sports,” Castro says.

“Sports should be an extension of family values and behaviors. Good parents and coaches tie in the ups and downs of competition with the challenges in navigating adult life.”

MAKE EDUCATION FIRST Castro and many observers of youth sports say parents have lost perspective by thinking their kid is on the fast track to a scholarship or a pro career.

Statistics show few advance that far.

“In the meantime, kids are exhausted from travel leagues and tournaments,” she says, “and the way their future through sports is emphasized, education becomes a distant second.”

ne of the many wonderful things about living in Arizona is that your kids can participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports all year round. There are many great options for getting your kids involved in local sports programs here in the Valley of the Sun. And not only are sports a great way for your kids to have fun, get exercise and stay active, they also teach kids important life lesson like sportsmanship, teamwork and respect.

Whether you want them to participate in team sports or as an individual, here are a few things to keep in mind when you are selecting a sport for your child.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPORT FOR YOUR CHILD Expose your child to a variety of sports activities, but help them choose a sport that is well suited to their age, interests and abilities. Don’t force your child to participate in a sport that doesn’t really interest them or that isn’t a good fit for their skillset – it’s a waste of both time and money, plus it can have a negative affect on your child’s attitude towards sports. Be sure to pick something that fits your budget and your schedule, to reduce your family’s stress level and make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. And don’t forget to include the cost of equipment, clothing and gear in your budget when you choose a sport!

TRAIN LIKE THE STARS WITH SMITHPRO FITNESS

T

he first 31 days of 2019 have come and gone. Has your New Year’s resolution to lose weight and get fit come and gone as well?

Smith was 13 when he discovered his love of fitness and bodybuilding. Like many kids, he admired his dad. His father also happened to be in excellent shape, and Smith described him as

being “like Superman” as he believed there was nothing he couldn’t do. One day, Smith was staring at the cover of a muscle magazine when his dad asked him what he was doing.

Through his connection with Jones, Smith was introduced to Mike Mentzer, the renowned professional bodybuilder, with whom he trained and learned more techniques.

“I want to look like that man,” said Smith pointing to the cover. “He’s strong, and I want to be like that.”

“Mentzer taught me productive exercise science and the true meaning of logic and reason in training,” said Smith.

His dad honored his request by purchasing him his first weight set, which he worked with in the backyard.

Then, at 16, he discovered Nautilus Gym and met its inventor Arthur Jones.

At 20, Smith earned his first certification, but like many other people with grand career dreams that get shoved aside, he never really worked it. In those early years, he did some part-time training here and there, but his full-time job was never in fitness.

Life often has a way of shaking things up and awakening us to what’s truly important.

“I studied his theories and techniques,” said Smith. “Jones was one of the best exercise scientists of his day. I learned there was more to it than just pushing weights; it’s a science.”

“After going through a divorce,” said

Smith, “I realized I wasn’t doing what I loved. I loved working with people, and I loved fitness. So, I jumped in full-time. It was a struggle at first, but once people started training with me and seeing my results— ‘Hey, this guy knows what he’s doing!’— I got busier and busier.”

Fast forward 15 years, and Smith, who had now remarried, moved to Los Angeles.

“I wanted to learn more about the fitness industry,” said Smith, “and I thought that LA was one of the best places to better my knowledge.”

Tinseltown—thousands of creatives flock there hoping to realize their ultimate dream of stardom. For some, it’s a city of heart-stopping joy, and

for others, it’s just simple heartbreak.

Luckily, all of Smith’s hard work, dedication and discipline to his craft paid off as he experienced his ‘Big Break’ in the City of Angels.

Not long after he arrived, he met one of Katy Perry’s dancers who, according to Smith, was looking to “bulk up and put some size on,” which was the new trend in Hollywood.

Dancers aspiring to go on world tours with stars like Perry were required to eschew the lean look for a more muscular and athletic physique called “body boys.” And while they were heavier, they still needed to be flexible and light on their feet in order to dance. The “mission” was on but not “impossible,” and Smith delivered through a combination of strengthen and functional training, and the dancer aced an audition landing a dance part with another A-list artist.

“That one contact took everything to the next level,” said Smith.

When other celebs and talent agencies saw this dancer, they were wowed and impressed with Smith’s work and results. This opened the floodgate to agencies. He quickly became the go-to fitness guy for whatever physicality an artist needed to achieve in order to secure a particular audition or role.

He zoomed to the top of fitness in Hollywood, and as his career grew, he received more and more agency referrals. His work, which was seven days a week, one client per hour, included preparing models and celebrities for modeling, commercial and movie work, and he coached musicians and dancers for tours.

“One agency I worked closely with,” said Smith, “when they signed someone, they would hand that person my business card, and tell them if they’re looking to go on world tours, they need to train with Mike to get more athletic looking.”

During his LA heyday, Smith employed his own trainers to ease the workload.

waits to use equipment, he opened his own gym. Equipped with more gear than most other facilities, his center was for the exclusive use of his clients.

And his clients were exclusive as he’s trained dancers to work with such headliners as Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. And for those who preferred the comfort of home over any gym, Smith also offered in-home training.

“In LA,” said Smith, “I realized you can’t do cookie-cutter routines; everyone’s different. That’s when I created my ‘A to Z’ training style. I set individual goals for people, and I can handle anything. If you want to lose weight, tone—whatever you want to do—I can help you to achieve it.”

Life has a way of keeping us in continuous fluctuation, and it was the death of his wife’s grandmother that brought these Phoenix natives back home to roost in January 2018.

Smith’s wife has an expansive family, and she was, simply put, homesick.

Consequently, Smith sold his equipment, and a friend “took over” his gym space.

As for his clients, they weren’t forgotten. Smith passed the reins of his training program on to two of his expert friends enabling them to carry on for him. He describes his clients as being “like family” and helps to train them via online mediums. Then, approximately every two to three months, he returns to LA, where he rents gym space and works handson with them. And because he’s maintained ties with the agencies, he still receives referrals.

Now, he hopes to establish here in Phoenix what he built in LA. Smith offers three different approaches to fitness. He does in-home training, boot camps in parks and he works with Fitness 1, a local gym at 3515 W. Union Hills Drive.

However, he’s most excited about his in-home fitness service.

experienced a tremendous commercial real estate recovery over the last half dozen years, with over 1,200,00 square feet sold in the industrial market over the last three years alone. That’s over $120 million in sales, and the trend has been up every year.

The industrial market trend in the Airpark has been tremendous lately.

I remain very optimistic about this market and commercial real estate in general looking forward. Pricing has almost returned to 2007 numbers.

New construction averages $140 per square foot. Industrial land is back within 75 percent of previous 2007 pricing.

While being optimistic, projecting 2019 won’t be so simple as following the trend. We may see some slow

down simply because of the lack of inventory in this market. The available lease product built over the last few years has kept up with demand but there is almost no new spec construction for purchase recently.

Of the +/- 25 new industrial buildings developed for sale since 2016, all have been sold or are currently in escrow. The only available new industrial product in the Deer Valley market currently is at 16th Street and Deer Valley; new industrial buildings for sale, represented by Luke Land. There are a few new buildings currently being planned but won’t be available until late 2019 or early 2020.

The overall market remains strong in Deer Valley Airpark with massive new construction in the residential market North of Happy Valley and West of 19th Avenue to name one.

The huge increase in residence in this market will only increase demand for retail, office and industrial product.

I anticipate a significant increase in new construction in those areas over the next few years to meet those demands.

Building a home inventory can seem like a daunting task, but doesn’t need to be.

GETTING STARTED • Make it a goal to create an inventory for one space in your house each week, such as the kitchen or entertainment center, and soon you’ll have a complete list. Document your valuables with general descriptions, cost, and when and where they were purchased.

Record serial numbers, if applicable.

They are usually found on the back or bottom of major appliances and electronic equipment. Then, move on to the next space you need to document.

• Make sure you have sufficient insurance coverage for big-ticket items, such as jewelry, art and collectibles. They may have increased in value and may require an endorsement in addition to your standard homeowners or renters insurance policy. Save receipts and appraisal documents with your inventory.

• Don’t forget items that may be tucked away in a garage, attic or storage shed.

KEEP YOUR HOME INVENTORY UP-TO-DATE AND IN A SAFE PLACE • Your home inventory is only useful if it is accurate and accessible when you need it. Make a habit of adding any significant new purchases and receipts to your list.

• If you have a paper inventory, keep a copy somewhere outside of your home, such as in a safe deposit box or with a trusted family member or friend. Make a digital backup of your paper list by taking a picture of it, or scanning and uploading it to a cloud storage service.

• If your list is digital, keep a copy of it on an external drive or cloud storage service. Photos and video you take with your phone may automatically be saved to cloud storage. Check your mobile phone settings to be sure.

• If using an app, make sure the information you enter is backed up and that you know how to access it when you need it.

Once your inventory is created, add up the replacement costs for all of your items, and discuss your situation with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverage to meet your needs.

By Jill “MamaBug” Frier It’s always surprising to hear how many Phoenicians have never spent time in Tucson. Just a short distance south of the Phoenix metropolitan area is a charming gem of southwestern sights to see.

Tucson is home to the University of Arizona, but ASU fans shouldn’t let that stop them from enjoying the many fascinating places to see in Pima County. The hotels and resorts are plentiful, but our advice is do your research and look at the map to plan your trip. Tucson is much more than what you can see while driving down the highway, and the limited view from I-10 just doesn’t do it justice.

Here are our favorite spots to visit while in Tucson.

ARIZONA SONORAN DESERT MUSEUM It’s a zoo. It’s a botanical garden. It’s a museum. It’s all of the above! The Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum is located in mountainous desert on the west side of Tucson, but still right down the road from both Old Tucson Studios and Saguaro National Park West. The museum provides visitors with gorgeous views of Sonoran Desert flora and fauna in a botanical garden type of setting. A stroll down the paved and unpaved trails takes you near enclosures that are home to various creatures native to the Sonoran Desert, from hummingbirds and butterflies, to javelinas, hawks, bears and mountain lions.

One of our favorite exhibits is the geological display, located in a mineshaft trail that takes you underground to see the wonders of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert under the surface. This state-of-the-art facility is a must-see if you are in Tucson – and worth planning a trip just to go there on the weekend.

OLD TUCSON STUDIOS Ever wonder where they made your favorite Western? It was probably right here in Old Tucson Studios. Located on the west side of Tucson, just down the road from the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, more than 400 movies have been produced at Old Tucson over the years - and they’re still going strong. With live entertainment, rides, tours and plenty to see, this is a great place to visit when you head to Tucson.

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK – EAST AND WEST Some of the most beautiful hiking spots in Arizona are found in Saguaro National Park West and East. The West part of the National Park is home to a fantastic display of petroglyphs, mountains and Saguaros. The East part of the park provides an entirely different view of the pristine Sonoran Desert, mountain ecosystems and desert wildlife. Everything the Sonoran Desert has to offer is available in two completely different parks, focused on the same purpose – preserving the mighty Sonoran Desert and the Saguaros that give the National Park its name.

KARTCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK Do you love fantastic caves and beautiful desert vistas? Then you’ll love visiting Kartchner Caverns State Park.

It’s opening in 1999 makes it a somewhat recent addition to the Arizona State Park system. Located southeast of Tucson, near Saguaro National Park East, Kartchner Caverns State Park provides facilities for camping, hiking and of course touring the caverns. Be sure to book your cave tour tickets in advance because tours book up very quickly!

PIMA AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM If you love aircrafts, space and the

history of flight, then the Pima Air and Space Museum should be on your must-see bucket list. This museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation and space museums in the world, featuring over 350 historical aircrafts from a Wright Flyer to a 787 Dreamliner. The museum, which opened in 1976, is located on 80 acres in the southeast part of Tucson, near Davis–Monthan Air Force Base.

The Pima Air and Space Museum houses six indoor exhibit hangars, three of which are dedicated specifically to World War II. Walking tours and museum ground Tram Tours are offered daily. The museum is also the exclusive operator for bus tours of the “Aircraft Boneyard,” a 2,600-acre U.S. military and government aircraft storage facility also located in Tucson.

If you love aircrafts, be sure to plan a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum. But give yourself plenty of time to explore – the museum is huge and there are hours worth of airplanes and historical displays to see!

SABINO CANYON RECREATION AREA If you are looking for a beautiful place to get outdoors for some hiking, biking or trail running, Sabino Canyon is home to a range of trekking opportunities from paved paths and easy trails, to more rugged mountainous ter-

rain. Located at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains on the northeast edge of Tucson, Sabino Canyon offers visitors a chance to see one of the premier natural areas in southern Arizona. Sabino Creek flows almost year around and the Sabino Canyon tram offers narrated, educational 45-minute tours every day. The tram route begins and ends at the Visitor’s Center, with stops at points along the road to drop off and pick up hikers at the various trailheads. This is a wonderful spot to get a flavor for the beautiful Tucson wilderness.

BIOSPHERE 2 The Biosphere 2 is one of the most interesting and educational attractions we have visited in Arizona. One of the world’s most unique facilities, the Biosphere 2 is dedicated to the research and understanding of global scientific issues. The facility is a working laboratory for controlled scientific studies, an arena for scientific discovery and discussion, and is a far-reaching provider of public education. The mission of Biosphere

2 is “to advance our understanding of the natural and man-made environment through unique experimentation, training of interdisciplinary scientists, science education and public outreach, and organization of meetings to address grand challenges that affect the quality of life and the understanding of our place in the universe.” This facility definitely does that – and it’s open to the public for tours.

Biosphere 2 is located north of Tucson, near Oracle, and you can reach it on the way into Tucson if you are traveling down AZ Highway 77 from Florence, AZ. There is really nothing like Biosphere 2. Make a point to stop and take a look the next time you head to Tucson – it’s worth the trip!

The story of Dick Cheney and his rise through politics, leading to his run as Vice President under George W. Bush.

Writer and director Adam McKay’s anger seethes throughout this movie, and the fury affects the style, editing and tone here. It goes back and forth between comedy and horror in how they show the things that Cheney and co. were able to get away with, and it’s a rare case where conflicting tones work. It’s insane just how meta the film is, continuously breaking the fourth wall with a narrating Jesse Plemons (who has his own story in the film), several interesting editing choices, and a false ending. Christian Bale perfectly recreates Cheney in voice, actions and personality, and is joined by a fantastic cast (especially Amy Adams). The documentary style (with wonderful shots

by Greig Fraser) adds to the realism and cements the uncomfortable feeling you are left with.

THE MULE

A ninety-year-old man takes up a driving job after falling into financial strain, only to discover its connections to a major drug cartel.

For someone who’s been directing for nearly 50 years, there’s a very amateur feel to Clint Eastwood’s new film. Maybe it’s due to his tendency to shoot very few takes, but none of the actors ever seem really ‘into’ the film, aside from Eastwood himself (who happens to play the main character). The situation at hand never resonates because the characters don’t seem to really care, so why should we? The film also seems to have an iden18 • February 2019 • DEER VALLEY TIMES

tity crisis when it comes to tone, because sometimes it really wants you to take the story seriously while also treating many moments as a comedy. Speaking of which, the humor is filled with outdated “kids these days…” and “the internet is terrible” jokes, along with some out of nowhere racist humor. Aside from that, it’s boringly shot and edited, making for an overall bland film. It’s bizarre that a film with this much talent can turn out the way it did.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK

A young woman and her family must do anything possible to save her lover from prison time after being accused of a horrific crime.

Barry Jenkins’ follow up to Moonlight is the kind of film that you can tell someone put more than their all into it. The film goes deep into the lives of Tish and Fonny (played expertly by KiKi Layne and Stephan James), showing their full uncensored lives, warts and all. But the genius of Jenkins is how he presents it - simple, normal and not overly staged.

A different filmmaker would try to make some scenes feel more fast-paced and hectic, but here, they are intimate and lovely. The energy from our leads also crosses over to the supporting cast, namely Regina King and Colman Domingo, and even the minor characters, including Brian Tyree Henry (who absolutely steals the show in his major scene).

Combine that with James Laxton’s old photo-like cinematography and Nicholas Britell’s beautiful score, and you have a love story for the ages. One that will make you feel all sorts of emotions, while making you think by the end.

Q. When can I file my return?

A. What this is really asking is, “When will the IRS start accepting returns?” The official date is January 28, 2019 for the 2018 Tax Year. With April 15 falling on a Monday, the IRS may allow an extra day or two but that will remain to be seen. It is better to plan ahead and file earlier, rather than later.

Q. Can you tell me about what the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of (TCJA) Act of 2017 really looks like?

A. What most people don’t realize is that the “new” Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of (TCJA) of 2017 has already been in effect for all of 2018. So, here’s what the actual brackets look like:

Q. Can we still “itemize” our deductions?

A. The short answer is yes...but with the new standard deductions increased to $12,400 for singles, $24,000 for married filing joint and $18,000 for head of household, itemizing sometimes does not match or equal the larger standard deduction. It’s very important that your preparer actually do the math and ask you plenty of questions to decipher which method will work best for you and your situation.

Q. Can you please elaborate about the notion of allowing the IRS to use your money interest-free?

A. This is great question because what it’s really asking is “Do you know the cost of your tax refund?” You certainly would not lend your money to someone without some sort of a “payback” schedule along with a reasonable rate of return, would you? Well, that is exactly what you’re doing when you get a refund at tax time. You are giving the government an interest-free loan of YOUR money. Rather, you could invest those dollars even into a conservative investment that would far outweigh getting a zero rate of return! There are mathematical ways to virtually “figure” what your return (or the amount you owed) is to within pennies!

Q. So, could the same be asked about tax deductions as well?

A. The same question of “Do you know the cost of your tax deduction?” could be asked! This is also a great question because there is a marked difference between a “deduction,” which reduces the amount of tax owed on your overall income (for example: you earn $50,000 and you contribute $10,000 to a 401k, therefore, $40,000 is the “new” taxable amount) and a Tax “credit” which literally reduces the amount of tax owed dollar for dollar. Some common tax credits are: the tax credit for child and dependent care expenses, education tax credits and the earned income tax credit, just to name a few.

Q. Is it true that you and your money have a silent partner?

A. Lastly and maybe most importantly, YES! His name is Uncle Sam. And he’s greedy, stubborn, selfish and a horrible listener! You do have a choice, though, to pick another part-

ner. You’ll still have to pay some form of tax, but by choosing the “right” partner and implementing the right tools, you can significantly reduce your tax obligation not just this year, but year after year after year! Choose wisely whom you work with.

orses Help is halfway through a research project that started in September. The purpose of the study is to determine whether or not an equine assisted activity program, such as the Family H.E.R.D., has a positive impact on family function.

They are still recruiting families for this project. A total of ten families have participated. There are currently six spots open that are needed for data collection. Participation is free to families who meet the criteria.

Any family interested in participating in the research study will need to be able to commit to three consecutive weeks. The program is offered on Monday evenings, Friday evenings, Saturday mornings or Saturday afternoons, and at least one child in the family must be age 10 or older.

The research program is set up in three phases. Each week the family completes one of the phases that will incorporate something new and interactive about horses. All activities and challenges are centered on learning about horses as family members.

Each participant will have multiple opportunities to work closely with the horses on the ground.

Phase one focuses on three concepts: building rapport and caring for horses, seeing the world from a horse’s perspective and learning about equine communication. Families are engaged in game-like activities and challenges in which they will experience the three concepts. Phase two focuses on understanding and accepting differences by learning about herd dynamics. Families will learn the importance for animals of prey to work together, accept the differences in hierarchy and personality within

the herd and how it relates to family dynamics. Finally, in phase three, families learn to establish and maintain boundaries while working with horses on and off lead. Concepts learned from phases one and two will also be revisited in phase three to help with the success of leading.

Data collection includes filling out questionnaires prior to starting the program, after the completion of the three weeks and again after three months. All names and identities are withheld for confidentiality. The H.E.R.D. program is not a family therapy program, but an opportunity for families to enjoy being outdoors together while learning about horses and interactions.

All families are welcome to participate as long as they meet the following criteria: • At least one family member is an adult 18 years or older • At least one child in the family is 10 years old or older (minimum age of 7) • Everyone in the family is able to read, write and speak English • Everyone in the family is capable of giving consent to participate in the study • Family can provide their own transportation to and from Horses Help • Family will be able to participate in all three weeks of the Family HERD program If you are interested in partaking in the Family H.E.R.D. research study, please contact Kerri at kerri.s@horseshelp.org or call the office at 602-569-6056.
