KAITY’S WAY INCREASES PUBLIC AWARENESS ON TEEN DATING VIOLENCE

S

ince 2008, Kaity’s Way, a 501(c)(3) approved nonprofit corporation, has played a significant role increasing public awareness on teen dating violence and in promoting healthy relationships. To ensure reduction of violence against Arizona’s children, Kaity’s Way promotes P.E.A.C.E. (Patience, Empathy, Acceptance, Caring, Equality) while educating the community and causing societal shifts in thinking and behaving. As a result of our unique perspective, the demand for the Kaity’s Way P.E.A.C.E. program has increased exponentially.

In the 2010, National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control, 22.4 percent of women and 15 percent of men who experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner first experienced some form of partner violence between the ages of 11 and 17. In a survey conducted by Kaity’s Way from 2011-12 in which more than 4000 students ages 13 to 18 were surveyed, 47 percent reported knowledge of a peer in a violent teen dating relationship. A more recent study by the American Psychological Association in 2013, found 41 percent of adolescent females and 37 percent of adolescent males report being a victim in an abusive relationship. In addition, 35 percent of female and 29 percent of males report being a perpetrator in a relationship.

Kaity’s Way exists because Ric and Bobbi Sudberry, co-founders of Kaity’s Way, are the grieving parents of one of such statistic; they have made a commitment to change the culture of a generation by guiding youth in creating healthy, respectful relationships free from violence. It is their sincere hope that the healthy skills learned in early dating relationships guided by the P.E.A.C.E. program will result in healthy adult relationships free from Domestic Violence. In order to achieve this, Kaity’s Way uses Kaity’s Story and the P.E.A.C.E. platform developed by Kaity’s Way, to provide prevention and intervention education related to teen dating violence to school and community groups.

On a personal level, Bobbi Sudberry and Kaity (in spirit) played a significant role in the passage of Kaity’s Law enacted on Sept 30, 2009. It provides those in dating relationships (romantic or sexual in nature) the same protection under the law as those who are married, live with someone, blood related, have a child in common, or are pregnant under the Arizona Domestic Violence statutes 13-3601.

presentation begins with Kaity’s Story; a compelling fact based account of Kaity Sudberry’s first dating relationship that had become very unhealthy and unfortunately ended with the loss of two young lives. After the story the pattern of abuse and the warning signs are reviewed as they pertain to the story. We also discuss how bystanders, family and friends can help as well as what a victim or abuser can do to help themselves. We offer considerations to safely exit an abusive relationship, which leads into an explanation of Kaity’s Law. The presentation is concluded with itemizing the elements of a healthy relationship as described in our P.E.A.C.E. Rights & Responsibilities document, created and distributed by Kaity’s Way. Upon request we will also return at a later time or date to debrief the audience and/or perform an exercise of role playing to further the understanding of the importance of healthy relationships. We also provide a Kaity’s Way P.E.A.C.E. bracelet which serves as a reminder of Kaity’s Story and the elements of a healthy relationship.

We also leave behind literature for future reference and teaching moments.

In addition, Kaity’s Way hosts monthly workshops around the valley, open to the general public and sets up resource tables at various events to distribute literature and cultivate public awareness. Frequently, we conduct breakout sessions at local and national conferences, maintain a useful and concise website www. kaitysway.org, and utilize social media venues such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google+ to assist in promoting healthy relationships. We also update the community on our program, tools, and calls to action.

NVSO TO HOST GALA FUNDRAISING EVENT NORTH VALLEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INVITES THE PUBLIC TO ATTEND THEIR ANNUAL GALA FUNDRAISING EVENT, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2018. The dinner event will be held at Moon Valley Country Club, 151 W. Moon Valley Drive, Phoenix, and includes a silent auction to contribute to operation and growth of NVSO and it’s youth programming. For many of the young musicians in the NVSO Youth Orchestra, Youth Strings and Symphonettes, this is the only way for them to progress, improve and be part of an orchestra since many school music programs are being eliminated or severely cut back.

Possible actions to help the City reach that goal include accelerating the transition to electric vehicles and alternate transportation, significantly increasing trees and shade in Phoenix, improving the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings, and expanding options to purchase clean energy.

Last year, the City also adopted a new goal of reducing GHG emissions by 40 percent by 2025 within its own operations (from City-owned buildings and vehicles).

ONE THING I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT… is music! My parents exposed my sister and me to music at an early age. We listened primarily to a variety of Christian, Motown and Elvis. Music was enjoyed at all occasions such as celebration, mourning, and motivation during Saturday morning chore time. I’d have to say music is my therapy in time of need and something I cannot live without.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WANTED TO BE… an artist. I enjoy all types of art and am fascinated with process sometimes more than the completed work. I am formally trained with BFAs in 2D & 3D Fine Arts and have a degree in Art Education.

THE SONG I WOULD SING AT KARAOKE NIGHT IS... I’ve sang many Karaoke songs; the most resent was “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night.

THE ONE PERSON WHO MOTIVATES ME IS… I cannot choose just one person! There are motivating people all around us. I have to give props to my parents, Keith and Darlene. I

learned to take pride in tasks and selfworth through achieving personal and professional goals.

THE LAST THING THAT MADE ME LAUGH OUT LOUD WAS… just last night, while walking our dog with my boyfriend! He was talking about getting his vehicle repaired, and I mentioned I needed to get mine inspected due to a leak. I was thinking oil but I said radiator leak. I guess I say the word differently than others.

We had a good laugh over that.

MY FIRST JOB WAS… babysitting, of course! I smile as I remember carrying a small tote with water colors, colored pencils, colored paper and floss string to every job. At the end of every babysitting evening everyone was adorned with their favorite colored bracelet or anklet.

I’M CURRENTLY WORKING ON… a grant proposal for a veteran women’s healing through art program.

The program will provide a safe, fun and drug/alcoholic-free environment where in-need women veterans, with

no art experience, can confidently explore their creative-side while simultaneously explore their personal lives through thought-provoking artistry.

My hopes are to get this approved and running by late Spring 2018.

THE BEST GIFT I’VE EVER RECEIVED WAS... a Dremel tool with many bits. A gift from my parents as a teenager, upon receipt, I thought it was the most useless. I held onto the Dremel and used sparingly during senior year of high school; I didn’t realize its value till college. That tool was a great art assignment saver. I used it on wood, ceramic, plexiglass and metal sculptures. I hesitantly gave it to my teenaged nephew prior to moving to Phoenix.

MY WORDS OF WISDOM TO ASPIRING BUSINESS OWNERS... You are not a failure if your business doesn’t succeed. Sure, there are struggles and growing pains.

Not all ideas work out; don’t hang onto a drowning business. Take what you can from the experience and move on before you are in a financial hole you can’t rebound from.

HERE ARE THREE TIPS FOR COMPANIES TO BRING IT UP

M

ost American employees, it turns out, aren’t all there.

In other words, the majority of U.S. workers aren’t engaged in their jobs. In its recent Employee Engagement Index, Gallup found 71 percent were not engaged in their work. Gallup defines “engaged” as those who are involved in, enthusiastic about and committed to their work and workplace.

Don Rheem, one of the nation’s principal authorities on leadership science, has a reason, and it starts at the top. Managers need to overhaul how they treat employees.

“In almost every area of business, companies are at the cutting edge of science,” says Rheem, author of Thrive By Design: The Neuroscience that Drives High-Performance Cultures. “They have the best equipment, software, and technology. When it comes to human behavior, however, most organizations are at least a decade behind the science,” says Rheem.

The notion that employees are lucky to have a job and that they should just do what they are told is still prevalent among leaders.

“What most managers don’t realize is the velocity of change -- especially regarding a scarcity of work-ready labor and a radical escalation in what employees expect from work,” he says, “and those who can’t adapt more quickly will struggle to attract and retain high performance personnel.”

For companies to be successful, Rheem says, it is imperative they find new ways to connect with employees. “As leaders contemplate ‘What should I do to engage my employees?’ they need to move away from the mindset of ‘If I do this, then I will get that in return,’ “ Rheem says. He gives three tips for taking a different approach to engage employees: BEGIN WITH SCIENCE, NOT LEADERSHIP FADS In Rheem’s view, quantifying engagement is an essential starting point. “You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” Rheem says.

“Measuring the details of what increases engagement for every department provides tactical focus. The data provides managers with clarity on how they can influence real culture shifts across the enterprise.”

FORGET SATISFACTION Rheem says an employee can be satisfied but not engaged.

“The key difference is employee satisfaction is an attitude that can change at a moment’s notice,” Rheem says, “and engagement is a behavior that predicts future conduct and increases satisfaction. Improving employee engagement is not a barter system where managers can simply exchange ‘casual dress’ days for a two percent improvement in staff productivity. This is an all-toocommon approach for companies focused on satisfaction rather than genuine engagement.”

FOCUS ON MANAGERS FIRST, EMPLOYEES SECOND Rheem’s engagement survey found most disengaged employees work under poorly-equipped managers. ”People join compa-

nies but typically quit managers,” Rheem says. “Companies need to better equip managers for the complex demands they face daily related to employee performance and to building a workplace culture influencing strong performance.”

“We all love to have fun, and we certainly need more of it in the workplace,” Rheem says. “But we don’t wake up every morning with the intrinsic need to play ping pong or foosball. We begin each day with a hardwired need to connect, be valued members of a team, and work in an environment that is predictable and consistent.” When managers focus on brain-based drivers of behavior, he explains, they get real and lasting results.

ou’ve heard the old adage, “Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for life.” Well, it’s a great time of year in Arizona to take your kids out to teach them to fish at one of the many fun fishing areas in our state.

There are so many great locations to fish in Arizona that we can’t list them all here. But we can give you some excellent resources to find the best fishing spot for you and your family to enjoy a day out.

ARIZONA GAME & FISH Sometimes it’s best to start at the beginning. If you want to go fishing, you need a license. Who better to give you the best information available about fishing than the group that issues licenses…the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The Arizona Game and Fish website (https://www.azgfd.com/ Fishing) has the most accurate and essential information available about fishing spots in every area of the state.

They provide state records for largest

fish caught each year, a detailed list of locations, fish stocking schedules, types of fish and limits, and much more. You can also pick up a hard copy of the fishing regulations guide anywhere you can purchase a fishing license.

CITY OF PHOENIX PARKS & RECREATION Phoenix city parks are a great place to take your kids fishing. A short drive to get to a park nearby gives you the experience of urban fishing with your youngster, in the beauty of the Sonoran Desert. The City of Phoenix has contracted with Arizona Game and Fish to stock eight of the municipal parks in Phoenix: • Cesar Chavez (Alvord Lake) (7858 S. 35th Ave) • Cortez (3434 W. Dunlap Ave) • Desert West (6602 W. Encanto Blvd) • Encanto (2605 N. 15th Ave) • Granada (6505 N. 20th St) • Papago (625 N. Galvin Parkway) • Roadrunner (3502 E. Cactus) • Steele Indian School (300 E. Each of the lakes are usually stocked with catfish in June, September and October and trout in November and December, but you can see the specific stocking schedule on the Arizona Game and Fish website. Be aware that all of the regulations that govern fishing in the state also apply in the City of Phoenix, as well as other municipal areas throughout the state.

LAKE PLEASANT REGIONAL PARK Another prime fishing location in the Valley is Lake Pleasant, part of the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation system. The Lake Pleasant Regional park boasts more than 23,000 acres, with activities that range from its various water sports – fishing, boating, swimming, etc. - to hiking, camping, picnicking and wildlife viewing. The lake is a reservoir and a key part of the Central Arizona Project waterway system, which helps bring water from the Lower Colorado River into Phoenix and the surrounding areas. Lake Pleasant has a large

marina and a Desert Nature Center to provide visitors with great information about fishing and the other activities available at the lake.

IMPORTANT FISHING TIPS Before you head out to the lake, take time to prepare for your fishing trip.

Bring your license, water, snacks a hat and sunscreen, as well as all of the fishing tackle and equipment you will need. Watch the weather and dress appropriately. Stay in designated areas, pack out all of your garbage and keep your cell phone handy for emergencies. Make sure your kids understand the rules for fishing, and check the local websites for that fishing spot to look for alerts or special announcements. There are tons of great places to go fishing in Arizona – this list of resources should help you find the right fishing spot for you and your family.

WHY EARN AN ONLINE DIPLOMA INSTEAD OF GETTING A GED?

A

pproximately 750,000 students drop out of high school each year in the United States.

On average, a high school dropout earns $20,241.

That’s $10,386 less annually than a high school graduate. And $36,424 less annually than those with a bachelor’s degree.

The numbers go further.

An online diploma is not the same as a GED. It is, however, the same as a high school diploma.

ARIZONA VOTERS OVERWHELMING SUPPORT INCREASED FUNDING FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS, SUPPORT EXTENSION, UPDATE OF PROP 301

F

or the third consecutive year, a majority of Arizona voters surveyed believe education is the top issue facing our state today.

In fact, education (42 percent) was named more than twice as many times as any other issue when voters responded to the openedended question. Border issues and illegal immigration (16 percent), government spending/taxes (5 percent), the economy (5 percent), and jobs and wages (5 percent) rounded out the top five issues mentioned. The question was asked of 600 likely voters statewide in a poll conducted on behalf of Expect More Arizona in December 2017

by HighGround, Inc. Pressing in on the topic of education, an overwhelming majority of voters across all political parties say the salaries K-12 teachers receive are too low (86 percent All, 80 percent Rep, 95 percent Dem, 85 percent Ind) and that too little funding is going to K-12 public education in Arizona (76 percent All, 61 percent Rep, 93 percent Dem, 76 percent Ind).

Concerns about funding and teacher pay rose to the top throughout the survey. When asked to consider the top issues facing education in Arizona, voters said budget/Lack of funding (31 percent), teacher salaries (19 percent) and teacher shortage (8 percent).

Asked to rate a list of items in terms of funding priorities for education, three of the top five highest rated items have to do with teacher pay. Teacher pay also far outpaced other education issues as the thing voters would be most willing to pay more in taxes to support.

For the second year in a row, survey results also show strong

support for extending and updating Proposition 301 in order to increase teacher pay. Extending the Prop 301 sales tax, which is set to expire in 2021, has support across all political parties (72 percent All, 60 percent Rep, 85 percent Dem, 80 percent Ind). Similar levels of support exist to increase the Prop 301 sales tax from .6 percent to 1 percent in order to increase teacher pay (68 percent All, 53 percent Rep, 86 percent Dem, 74 percent Ind). A smaller majority support an increase to 1.6 percent (56 percent All, 41 percent Rep, 76 percent Dem, 63 percent Ind).

Stand for Children – Arizona also conducted a poll in December 2017. The results are similar and reinforce the need to address education funding as soon as possible.

While these and other poll results clearly show Arizona voters care deeply about education, the state also has a meaningful tool to better understand where we stand as a state on teacher pay and other important education indicators.

The Arizona Education Progress Meter was developed through a partnership between Expect More Arizona, the Center for the Future of Arizona, and more than 200 organizations, business leaders, educators, and community leaders.

Included are eight key indicators that help us understand where we are today, and goals for each indicator that articulate where we want to go.

With an eye toward achieving the long-term goals outlined in the Arizona Education Progress Meter, Expect More Arizona will call on its network of organizations and individuals to work together to move the following priorities forward in 2018: • Promote policies to identify

struggling students early • Build support for policy changes to address the growing achievement gap (including support for students with special needs and English Learners, among others).

• Support reinvestment in Arizona’s community colleges.

• Support continued progress toward funding 50 percent of AZ’s university resident students.

• Support efforts to provide salary incentives for teachers to complete and maintain research-based credentials.

ARE YOU READY FOR A FUN DATE IDEA?

JUST THE RIGHT MIX OF ROMANTIC, SILLY, ADVENTUROUS, AND CHILL

I

thought of doing a photo challenge date night a year or two ago, but never got around to it. When we finally decided to try it out, I Googled to see what had already been done, but couldn’t find much and definitely nothing quite like I envisioned.

So we decided to put one together that anyone can use!

Why is this photo scavenger list better than others? Sure, you can find all sorts of photo scavenger hunt prompts across the web, but none of them are well-optimized for a date. When you’re on a date you want to have fun, get to know each other better, not be rushed, and probably not have to interact with others too much. These prompts are focused on facilitating just that.

A FEW TIPS: • First look over all the prompts to plot out your date itinerary as it makes the most sense. We would have easily been able to do everything in the mall where we were, but you could also drive to several different locations or even park downtown and walk around.

• This is a date you could easily stretch out all day, but could also do in a couple hours if you order it right. Be creative in doubling up the prompts if you’re short on time.

• If you can, take your time to enjoy each activity – it’s really just a simple structure to make a normal date a little more interesting.

• If you’re using your phone camera, use the back one so the pictures will be nice enough to print out for a scrapbook or maybe even your wall, if you happen to capture something you especially like.

Since we weren’t familiar with the mall, we weren’t sure what we were going to be able to find to represent us, but then inspiration struck when we saw these rocking chairs. We’re all about finding a way to chill pretty much anywhere we are in our travels and in life, with a pinch of quirky for good measure.

We were so hungry and everything in the food court was pretty American, so we ended up getting Popeye’s,

Your last name if you’re married, first names/nicknames, anniversary date, etc. You probably want to make sure to decide at the beginning of the date what you’re going to spell out so you have time to spot letters you like. We got some extras so we’d have a few to pick from. If you especially enjoy photography and have the time, you could also find objects that look like letters and make them all black and

I love churros, but I wasn’t even in the mood to eat something sweet. We were running out of light, so this was kind of a last resort shot.

You can buy whatever you want for your date, as long as it’s in your budget, we just want to keep things inexpensive for us.

WILD CARD • Search #datenight or #love pose or #SelfieScavengerDate or some such to find a couple pose/scene to copy, just beware of stupid pics showing up sometimes • Chalk pose – use chalk to draw a speech bubble or some props on sidewalk/pavement and put yourselves in the picture • Find a coin with a significant date – birth year, first kiss, first date, wedding, etc. you can turn it into jewelry later or something else fun • One line drawing game – the first person starts with one mark and you keep taking turns making one line, without consulting each other what it is, until you can’t think of anything else to add. Congrats, you’ve just made some memorable art.

Extra points for creativity with or in front of something interesting. I know it looks like we’re not in love, but you can’t see that out of the frame I have my hands on his waist at least. We were actually trying not to completely cover up the mall statue.

STELLAR YEAR: 2017 - OVER $133,000,000 OF REAL ESTATE SALES IN THE DEER VALLEY AIRPARK IN 2017

t certainly was a stellar year in the Airpark with sales in the industrial, office, retail and land market exceeding $133,000,000.

These kinds of numbers are very reminiscent to the early 2000’s.

The economic recovery was very evident in this market. Deer Valley Airpark was undoubtedly one of the busiest areas in the metro Phoenix real estate market over the last year.

There were about 55 individual industrial sales ranging

from 2,000 to 50,000 square feet with total sales exceeding $56,000,000. The average price was $116 per square foot. If you look at historical industrial deals selling around $60 psf a few short years ago, the recovery is evident in this market. Land sales exceeded $37,000,000 in 2017 with about 34 individual deals. The average price per square foot for land was $10.45 but this includes all types, industrial, retail, office and residential land. Industrial land averaged between $7.00 and $7.50 psf. A decade ago land prices fell to $0.10 to the dollar during the great recession just past. In other words, land that had previously sold at $1 million could be purchased for $100,000.

Today that same piece now cost $750,000. We’re not all the way back but we getting close!

Office sales, as always, lagged behind industrial with 9 office sales averaging about $139 per square for about $37,000,000 in sales. While retail sales reached about $3,200,000.

All and all it was a great year for the Deer Valley Airpark commercial real estate market in 2017 with an enormous amount of new construction and plenty of movement of product. Pricing increased 10 percent to 15 percent in sales and leases. Average industrial leases increased to approximately $0.75 psf (NNN)

while office averaged $13.50 modified gross.

Looking forward to our 2018 projections, we may actually find our market with a lack of inventory to meet the needs in the airpark. We are projecting continued growth and prosperity in our market this year. 2017 was stellar but 2018 may surpass it and if inventory grows we could look at record growth in 2018 and into 2019.

Currently there is only one industrial building between 8,000 and 20,000 square feet for sale in Scottsdale Airpark and those needing that requirement will start looking in Deer Valley Airpark to relocate. We only have about a half dozen in Deer Valley currently The North Valley’s Preferred available for sale and Pest Specialist for 18 Years! only three of those are new construction at SPV Pinnacle Peak II. Scottsdale Airpark is only a short drive and we expect some clients to expand into the Deer Valley Airpark market soon. As you know on 12/27/17, the President signed a $1.5 trillion tax overhaul expected to trigger tax cuts for most Americans next year. NAR (National Association of Realtors) worked tirelessly with members of the House-Senate conference committee to help educate them on how to improve the final bill. After the vote, NAR President Elizabeth Mendenhall issued the following statement: “The results are mixed. FOUR SIMPLE ACTIONS TO ORGANIZE AND START YOUR YEAR OFF RIGHT FIVE MINUTES – CREATE TWO FILES TO LESSEN TAXTIME STRESS Tax documents will start to arrive in the next few weeks. Get ahead of the document deluge and create two files. Label one 2017 and the other 2018. Keep things simple for now.

It’s not about organizing your tax documents; it’s making sure you have a go-to spot to file them when they arrive. Come tax time, you’ll know right where everything is.

Since you have your 2018 file on-hand, your receipts and other documents can be easily filed away throughout the year.

A professional organizer advocating for more paper? Yes, but only when it comes to taxes. Keep your documents easily accessible. You won’t have to worry about tech issues from a computer on the fritz to a lost USB drive or misbehaving printer. Scan and back up your documents if that’s how you prefer to keep records. But

THE POST

The true story of The Washington Post’s release of the Pentagon Papers.

What’s great about The Post is, despite Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks getting top billing, it really feels like an ensemble piece showing how different members of the Washington Post’s team contributed to the story. It helps that director Steven Spielberg chose great actors like Michael Stuhlbarg and Bob Odenkirk for even the smallest of supporting roles. Everyone gets at least one scene where they’re the central character, and I love that. In addition, I appreciated how Spielberg and editors Michael Kahn & Sarah Broshar present conversations by not needing to switch back and forth between the different characters talking at several points in the film. The aspect ratio and film stock that was used to shoot the movie also give it a timely look. I highly recommend it.

ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

The story of the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and his mother’s attempts to save him, with his grandfather, J. Paul Getty, refusing to help pay for the ransom.

A lot of the attention around Ridley Scott’s new film has been about Christopher Plummer replacing Kevin Spacey just a month before the film’s release.

Plummer did give a good performance, showing someone who was cold-hearted but didn’t scream “I’m an evil businessman”, which was something I was worried about when I saw Spacey in the original trailer. But in terms of truly great performances, Michelle Williams and Romain Duris are the most notable, the latter managing to stand out in the star-studded cast, making the kidnapper feel like a real human instead of a fictional villain. Scott and his regular DOP Dariusz Wolski give us several beautiful shots. Unfortunately, Charlie Plummer, who plays Paul Getty, isn’t given much to do, even though he really is trying with his performance, and Mark Wahlberg doesn’t bring anything

different compared to past performances.

The film, despite some really good scenes, suffers from many moments where the pace drags. It’s a bit of a disappointment in my opinion, given the talent and the source material.

INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY

Elise Rainier returns to her childhood home when someone calls for her help.

The best thing about The Last Key for me was the design of the central monster Key Face, played by the amazing Javier Botet, and Lin Shaye is great as always. Unfortunately, everything else doesn’t work for me. The comic relief in Elise’s sidekicks Specks and Tucker is very forced and awkward, and her brother and nieces don’t get much screen time to get us to care about them. There are out-of-nowhere romances and plot reveals. We suddenly are stuck with one of Elise’s nieces, Imogen, for a decent part of the film, and the scares are very generic. If this is the last of the Insidious films (which I highly doubt, given the box office numbers), it’s a very disappointing end.

A hit woman takes care of a young boy after killing his father.

Proud Mary should work, as Taraji P. Henson owns the role as the title character. Unfortunately, despite that and the 70s feel, the film is let down by mediocre direction, poor editing, and an all-around rushed feel (the film is only 1 hour and 28 minutes).

We don’t get to spend much time to see how the young boy, Danny, was affected by his father’s death, as the film skips ahead one year immediately after the killing. The rest of the cast doesn’t fare much better, with even Danny Glover looking tired throughout the film. The sound mixing is also atrocious, and the use of music is strange, going from an upbeat 70’s song to a sad orchestral score within seconds.

As good as it is to see a woman of color as the lead in an action film, it’s a shame it couldn’t be backed by a better script and director.

A study by UnitedHealthcare shows that nearly 30 percent of Americans use the internet or mobile apps as our first source for information about health conditions. In fact, you might have noticed a growing number of apps that enable you to receive medical care virtually.

Virtual care, also known as remote care, telehealth, telemedicine or online visits, is medical care that’s delivered using technology rather than through an inperson consultation.

Research has found that 77 percent of consumers are open to seeing their doctor virtually. Yet fewer

Some care providers offer telehealth visits for chronic conditions or behavioral

health issues. Virtual visits aren’t appropriate for a hands-on physical exam, or for certain tests or X-rays. In an emergency, call 911 or go to an emergency room.

UNDERSTAND THE COST Virtual visits through your health plan usually cost the same or less than an in-person doctor visit.

Independent telehealth services usually charge $50 to $75 per visit. In any case, your cost for virtual visits is usually lower than urgent care and emergency room visits.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) pointed out that a virtual visit saves 106 minutes on average, compared to an in-person appointment. Tapping an app could give back more than an hour of your day.

Best of all, virtual visits can help you access the care you need, when you need it. Whether that means learning that your cough is nothing serious or getting treatment sooner when pinkeye appears on a Saturday night, virtual care might be just what the doctor ordered.
