a word from the editors
Parlez-vous L.A.? People from all over the world make up Los Angeles, creating an electrifying and constantly changing melting pot of cultural diversity. As transplants from Paris ourselves, we never stop exploring all the singular experiences that L.A. has to offer. We at egolosangeles believe the word ego has gotten a bad rap; we think celebrating what makes us special is a part of a well-lived life. We’d love to show you parts of L.A. that justifiably glow with pride, and we’re doing this on paper because sometimes flipping a page and going off-screen is refreshing and soul serving. So, come take a breather with us. We have curated content that will tease your senses and inspire your imagination. Explore the city outside of the Hollywood and Beverly Hills you see in the media. We mean the vibe of the neighborhoods. The food. The art. The music. The fashion. High, low, and everything in between. We are happy and excited to introduce you to our Los Angeles. With each page, you’ll discover a new wine pairing, be introduced to a new artist, get insider travel info, and escape from the madness of nonstop digital information for a little while. Summer is in the air, so let’s enjoy it. Thank you for joining us for this inaugural publication. Welcome to seeing the world through our eyes.

The Parisian tearoom was founded in 1862, when Louis Ernest Ladurée opened a bakery at 16 Rue Royale. In 1871, while Paris was undergoing a massive renovation a fire in the bakery afforded the opportunity to transform it into a pastry shop. Ladurée’s wife, had the idea of mixing styles, and the Parisian café and pastry shop morphed into one of the first salons de thé in town. Throughout the decades, Ladurée has become one of the most prestigious Parisian institutions, known for its macarons. It was purchased by the Holder Group in 1993 with the objective of keeping the great classics that contributed to its reputation, as well as creating an environment for gastronomic creativity. Laduree is making its way around the world, one macaron at a time.

MY FASHION BOUTIQUE
Suited to a T in Santa Monica Minnie T’s only rules: uncommon and independent style, natural fibers, and artistic construction with a collection that combines strong New York and European sophistication with the casual chic of L.A.’s most cosmopolitan women, Minnie T’s has been a fashion trailblazer since its start in 2001 as the first clothing store on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. With more than 60 emerging lines from around the world, Minnie T’s has been an under-the-radar favorite for stylists, celebrities, and artists since day one. In the fall of 2014, the boutique expanded its presence with a move to Santa Monica’s up-and-coming Ocean Park Boulevard, where it continues to honor its founding principle of celebrating timeless yet modern handcrafted goods.

MY ART CORNER
MY EGG ON THE GO: EGGSLUT
Founded by artist and former art teacher Patrick Iaconis and landscape architect and urban planner Tanya Patsaouras, the Center for Audio & Visual Expression (C.A.V.E.) gallery was created to provide an exhibition space and public forum that supports fresh, energetic, and thought-provoking urban contemporary art. C.A.V.E. Gallery pre sents a new exhibition each month, featuring a roster of emerging local, national, and international artists who are inspired by the Lowbrow, Pop Surrealism, and Street Art movements—and who are at the same time ambitious about challenging creative styles and techniques, establishing their own place in art history.
Changing the egg game since 2011, Eggslut is a chef-driven food concept that was inspired by a true love for eggs. The menu is a balance of classic comfort fare and unique eats that any adventurous foodie would love. The only thing items have in common is that they all contain cage-free eggs. No longer just a breakfast staple, Eggslut is making eggs an all day, every day, go-to meal. Judging by the long lines, obviously they’re getting something egg-sactly right. People love the Fairfax sandwich made with soft scrambled eggs, chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and Sriracha mayo on a brioche bun, and the cheekily titled Slut, a coddled egg on a bed of potato purée, poached in a glass jar and served with a baguette. Needless to say, if you love eggs, this is your spot.

MY BRUNCH: BLVD
A Brunch With a View Set in the heart of Beverly Hills, under the expert hands of Chef Thomas Bellec, The Blvd in the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire is a classic and elegant spot, perfect for people watching and lingering over a robust cup of coffee while overlooking the Rodeo Drive crowd. Relax on the patio and take it all in while enjoying brunch staples like poached eggs with smoked salmon and potato rosti (similar to a potato pancake or hash browns) topped with caviar, or some seriously fluffy pancakes. Not only is the food fantastic, the view and ambience is such a treat that you’ll never want to leave. If you’re looking for a fancy brunch in Beverly Hills, this is the place to be. LB © DR

MY BRUNCH: REPUBLIQUE
Republican Party
© SIERRA PRESCOTT 2015
A prominent L.A. brunch and dinner restaurant, République is not only known for its pastries, pasta, and baguettes, but also its interior design. With plaid green-and-white flooring, a large skylight, and rustic brick walls, this quaint eatery has a homey French country style and is definitely worth a try. The vibe is bright and lively, with weekend lines going out the door. If you’re looking for an on-the-go brunch, this is the place. (Test out dinner if you want a sit-down, fancier experience.) Although there is plenty of seating available for brunch, République gets packed, and for good reason. Standouts are the freshly baked bread, excellent coffee, and the kimchi fried rice with a poached egg. Weekends are a little bit crazy, but the fine fare and ambience make it worth while. République is a special spot you don’t want to miss. LB RÉPUBLIQUE 624 South La Brea Avenue Los Angeles CA 90036
MY BRUNCH: SPARTINA
Italian Dressing Ever wonder where to go to get good quality Italian food for brunch? Spartina is the spot, and it’s switch ing up Italian classics and putting a modern and interesting California take on them. Breakfast pizza with smoked prosciutto is on the menu, along with unique items such as waffles Bolognese and an uni scrambled egg panino. The pasta is made fresh daily, and the brilliant combination of ingredients sings to anyone’s palate. Tucked away on Melrose Avenue, this is a true gem that provides diners with fresh ingredients and even better and bolder flavors. Chef Stephen Kalt puts his passion and soul to work, and it shines through his beautifully plated meals. The open kitchen gives it an extra special feel, while the decor is modern and chic. If you’re looking for an Italianate brunch that will leave you satisfied and wanting to come back for more, Spartina is the right choice. LB

One may think that with a name like The Butcher’s Daughter, this restaurant is serving up slabs of meat, fried chicken wings, and racks of ribs. Well, it’s quite the opposite. At The Butcher’s Daughter, they treat fruits and vegetables as a butcher would treat meat. You’ll find fresh produce that is chopped, filleted, and carved into wholesome, mouthwatering vegetarian and vegan dishes like beet “tartare”, jumbo lump “crab” cakes, and spaghetti squash carbonara. The dishes are fresh, hearty, healthy, and won’t have you wondering where the meat is. The freshness doesn’t stop with their dishes—they also serve cold-pressed cocktails like the 24-Carrot, made with Contratto Bianco, pressed carrot, and pressed orange and the refreshing Rosemary’s Cup made with Contratto bitters, mint, rosemary, cucumber, and ginger. From morning to night, The Butcher’s Daughter has breakfast, lunch, and dinner that will keep you satisfied and your waistline svelte. Start your day with one of their espresso drinks, wellness lattes or teas, cold-pressed juices, or raw smoothies along with bakery items and breakfast bowls and plates. With a commitment to buying produce from local farms, their fruits and vegetables taste better, support our community’s sustainability, and keep you coming back for more with fresh, beneficial, and delicious meals. My Winning Stretch
Cocoa With a Conscience
We all know the importance of stretching. Stretching makes your muscles longer, increases your flexibility, improves your performance, decreases your risk of injury, and boosts the blood flow to your muscles. StretchLab has made this important part of exercise accessible to all of us with 20- to 60-minute stretches (from 20 minutes for $25). Co-founders Saul Janson and Tim Trost had been training with each other for many years, including stretching each other prior to or after working out. With a stretching partner, Saul’s stretchers were deeper and more effective, and he often found himself wanting to be stretched on days that they did not work out. StretchLab was the answer to finding a place for just a stretch. With Steve Sudell, a physical therapist, on board with Saul and Tim, they hired a group of personal trainers, massage therapists, and yoga instructors to join StretchLab as flexologists, who will provide you with the deepest of stretches. The ZenBunni commitment to sustainability is present in every aspect of the company, from biodegradable packaging with vegetable inks to an infectious passion for biodynamic education and practice. Nighthawk: Breakfast Bar is a bar and restaurant concept by Jeremy Fall, serving elevated breakfast-themed fare and innovative cocktails. With a lively old school meets new school vibe and a decor of retro patterns, dark walls, tufted leather booths, and graffiti art, Nighthawk was inspired by late-night rock-and-roll breakfasts. The breakfast theme rolls into its cocktail list, which includes concoctions like spiked cereal milks made with Cinnamon Toast Crunch and spiced rum, Honey Nut Cheerios and bourbon, and Cocoa Puffs and vanilla vodka. There’s also a slushy Bloody Mary for those who love savory cocktails, along with boozy floats, three takes on mimosas, and alcoholic coffee drinks. We can’t get enough of the Cocoa Fashioned, made with Cocoa Puffs–infused bourbon, demerara syrup, and mole bitters. Once you have imbibed, check out the food menu helmed by Spago alum Chef Greg Schroeppel. The menu includes a whimsical dish called Duck, Duck, Goose (scrambled duck eggs with foie gras, duck-porcini jus, and house-made Whistle Pig blackberry jelly toast). There’s also a breakfast bánh mì bowl, a duck confit hash, a candied bacon breakfast burger, drunken French toast with brandy, and chicken and biscuits. WE

TREEPEOPLE exposé
LIKE US BY BRADLEY LINCOLN PICTURES TREEPEOPLE
One of the most influential environmental advocacy groups in the world was the brainchild of Andy Lipkis, a 15-year-old kid who was sick of getting sore throats from the polluted air of 1960s Los Angeles. He also saw fire-ravaged areas of the mountains were slip slidin’ away, and the omnipresent smog was choking out acres of trees at his summer camp in the San Bernardinos. He immediately organized a squad of fellow campers and started planting smog-resistant saplings in a dusty parking lot. Three years later, in 1973, he founded TreePeople, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving L.A.’s air quality by planting trees. It was funded in part with more than $10,000 in donations he raised when he kick-started the project by making impassioned calls to politicians and the press, and appearing in the Los Angeles Times. Most of the cash that came in was in 50-cent increments. Today, TreePeople has planted well over 2 million trees, recruited armies of volunteers for planting and cleanup duties, and worked tirelessly to educate communities and all levels of government on the whys and the hows of purifying local water, nursing soil back to health, and increasing tree canopies (they reduce heat and sound stress, lower crime rates, and help patients recover from surgery faster and with less pain medication—green genies, indeed). Staffers work out of a cluster of yurts on the TreePeople campus, situated in the pastoral 45-acre Coldwater Canyon Park, at the intersection of Mulholland Drive and Coldwater Canyon. A handsome angular Marmol Radziner–designed conference center hosts lectures, volunteer training, and community meetings, and there’s also a nursery, an environmental learning center, and several gardens and picnic areas. The free parking lot is an ideal trailhead to some of the best and most scenic hiking in Los Angeles, with varying levels of difficulty to suit the gamut of athletes.

Volunteers come in all sizes
No-nonsense Lipkis has a knack for getting things done. When a retired schoolteacher came up with the idea of honoring Martin Luther King by planting hundreds of trees along his eponymous boulevard in South Central L.A., she ran into a spool of red tape at city hall. She was informed that it was a great idea but it wasn’t going to happen. She turned to Lipkis, who told her, “Let’s do this, and let’s do it in a day.” In 1990 TreePeople rallied 3,000 volunteers who planted 300 trees along seven miles, and today this monument to Dr. King is visible from space.

The Venice Simplon
Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, the legend Connecting the most romantic capitals of Europe since 1883, the Venice SimplonOrient-Express makes you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. Its splendid blue vintage cars contain comfortable cabins dressed in velvet, precious wood, and crystal. Admire the Italian Dolomites, the Danube Valley, and the Swiss Alps while enjoying a quiet tea in the afternoon, or listen to music in the piano bar car, where passengers socialize as beautiful panoramas roll by. High-end details greet you in the three impeccably appointed dining cars, glittering with belle epoque decor, as French chefs serve menus inspired by the passing regions. Sit back, sip champagne in your chicest attire, and delight in this classic sojourn. belmond.com
Rocky Mountaineer, the Canadian Rockies from a different angle Snowy mountains, canyons, lakes, rivers, and forests abound as the Rocky Mountaineer carves through the Canadian Rockies between Vancouver and Lake Louise in four days. This train runs only during the day, so passengers are on their own to explore stopover towns and check in to luxurious hotels. Since there’s no need for sleeping cabins, all of its cars are designed to maximize the spectacular, otherwise inaccessible views. From glass-domed wagons observe eagles gliding in the wind and grizzly bears roaming the countryside, or feel the breeze and breathe in the fragrant scents of pine and spruce forests in open-air cars. Feast your eyes upon the Glacier National Park and the magnificent Pyramid Falls as guides entertain and inform with stories about copper mining in the West, the construction of the railway, and the life cycle of the salmon. rockymountaineer.com

Indian Pacific, between two oceans Known as the train of excess, the Indian Pacific has been traversing Australia from Perth to Sydney in impressive style since 1970. The Indian Pacific quite literally transports one from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, allowing passengers to travel from west to east (or east to west) in luxury and comfort as they take in the vast beauty of Australia. Passengers choose between platinum, gold, and red tickets, allowing for different levels of experience and price. Guests can also pick from an impressive selection of off-train excursions, visiting the towns and gold mines that strike their fancy. The Indian Pacific travels along one of the longest train tracks in the world, covering just over 2,700 miles of Australian terrain in four days and three nights. greatsouthernrail.com.au
Rovos Rail, the Orient Express of the savannahs The maiden voyage of the Rovos Rail took place in 1989, so it isn’t the oldest train in the world, but it is undoubtedly the most luxurious. Pulled by authentic steam locomotives, the convoy consists of 36 Pullman wagons dating from 1920 to 1930, lovingly restored into luxurious suites. The coaches in this rolling palace boast parquet floors, wooden paneling and tapestries on the walls, air conditioning, full bathrooms, safes, and personal lounges—all the ingredients of a five-star hotel. The Rovos Rail, nicknamed The Pride of Africa, offers more than eight tour routes, with some of the most popular exploring Cape Town and Durban in South Africa, Namibia, and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Select one of three types of cabins on offer and go out and discover the jawdropping landscapes of southern Africa.

The California Zephyr
California Zephyr, the railway version of Route 66 The California Zephyr, known as the CZ, is a railway line in the United States that travels the approximately 2,485 miles between Chicago and San Francisco and takes 52 hours. But traditional hotels are left in the dust of this train’s tracks—what kind of hotel can compete with double-deckers offering splendid views of the countryside? The Mississippi River, the Nebraska plains, the canyons of Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, the otherworldly landscapes of Utah, the desert expanses of Nevada, the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Sacramento, San Francisco Bay, and much more are all framed by your windows along this adventure. It’s pure magic. amtrak.com
With more than 5,700 miles covered in one week between Moscow and Vladivostok, close to a thousand stations and seven time zones are crossed on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Fields morph into forests that transform into sparkling waters—the scenery is as diverse as the countries you pass through. Let your eyes dance over the Ural wooded round, Siberia, and Lake Baikal, nestled in a valley of towering mountains. Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifico, the marvels of Mexico This unique Mexican passenger train, also known as El Chepe, connects Chihuahua, in the north of the country, to Los Mochis, Sinaloa, on the Pacific coast. Dozens of small tunnels and bridges make this journey an unforgettable experience, punctuated by stops in the villages built along the railway track. Seen as an impressive engineering achievement, this line is considered to be one of the 13 wonders of Mexico. It also happens to be one of the most beautiful railway trips in the world. Tren a las Nubes, traveling at altitude Located at 13,100 feet above sea level in the Andes, the Tren a las Nubes, or Train to the Clouds, is one of the highest railways in the world. It begins its ascent from the railway station in Salta, Argentina, at 3,915 feet above sea level, and arrives 14 hours later at its end point at the La Polvorilla viaduct, which sits 13,845 feet above sea level. Between these two points, Tren a las Nubes regularly conquers a 10,000 foot climb by way of 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, and 13 viaducts, all in the heart of the hills and mountains of the Andes. The Train to the Clouds takes its name from the many clouds often seen beneath the bridges and on the slopes of the mountains. It was originally built to serve the borax mines of the region, carrying goods from the coast of Chile through the Andes to the northwest of Argentina.

Bolinas Lagoon
AS A BOHEMIAN COASTAL VILLAGE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, BOLINAS EXUDES SERENITY. FAR OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, IT’S DISCOVERABLE ONLY TO THOSE WHO SPECIFICALLY SEEK IT OUT. THE INITIAL THOUGHT OF A FIRST-TIME VISITOR MIGHT BE TO SING THE PRAISES OF THIS FREE-SPIRITED COMMUNITY, BUT YOU’LL SOON REALIZE IT’S BETTER TO KEEP QUIET AND LET THE VILLAGE CONTINUE ON AS IT IS. SO TICK A LOCK: YOU DIDN’T HEAR IT FROM US.
T
he small paradise of Bolinas hides in Marin County, about an hour’s drive north of San Francisco. A reclusive oasis of calm and nature, the town’s approximately 1,600 citizens attempt to keep it that way by regularly tearing down road signs that lead to the community. One sign on State Route 1 has never stayed up more than 36 hours. The county replaced them for 40 years before finally throwing in the towel, reluctantly giving in to residents’ preference for signless surroundings.

Townies have always been desperate to preserve this beautiful beach village, nestled between mountains. Their mayor calls the village the Republic of Bolinas, and proclaims to the press that “there is no reason to come here.” Many of its residents came from San Francisco in 1971 to clean the beach that had been contaminated by a large oil spill. These hippies and nature lovers never left, rebuilding stilted fishermen’s houses one by one. Artists, writers, and performers have taken up residence, drawn by the open-mindedness, eco-awareness, and ethical values by which the occupants live. Some celebrities have also made Bolinas home, including Alice Waters, Joel Coen, Frances McDormand, and Harmony Korine. Even as houses sell for a small fortune, Bolinas has retained its cool, libertarian spirit. The townspeople are extremely sensitive to environmental problems and they incorporate a rigorous ecological model of governance. In 2003 a resident suggested the town publicly recognize its love for nature, including bears, foxes, and blueberries, and the proposal was adopted on a referendum by a large majority. This resulted in the display of a sign saying, “You enter a socially conscious and nature-loving village” (which, like most signs in Bolinas, has since disappeared). The village is best explored on a walk down the town’s only avenue, with quirky houses in the Mesa area and mom-and-pop shops downtown. The Bolinas Museum, open three afternoons a week, exhibits the sculptures, landscape paintings, and photographs of regional artists. The only restaurant, the Coast Cafe, sits in the heart of the village. It’s a laid-back place where locals come to dine, with a menu of grilled oysters with bourbon butter, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and barbecued beef. Got a sweet tooth? It also serves homemade apple pie and root beer floats. Opposite Coast Cafe, Smiley’s Saloon boasts of being the oldest tavern west of the Mississippi. In true small-town fashion, the saloon has some rooms to rent if you’re too knackered to make it home. Down the avenue is the People’s Store, an organic coop that offers locally sourced produce, meats, and cheeses, as well as homemade soups and custom sandwiches.

A visit to Bolinas would be remiss without a trip to the beach. Known for gnarly surfing, it also offers beautiful hikes and an immense lagoon where fertile waters attract seabirds and fishermen. The Bolinas beaches are part of the area known as the Red Triangle, home to a variety of marine mammals. Watch out, though—it’s also home to one of the world’s largest populations of great white sharks. In contrast to their usual anti-sign policy, Bolinas residents have let “Beware of sharks” signs remain. The inhabitants have done a bang-up job of pre serving the authenticity and harmony of their town, making a visit to Bolinas the perfect chance to take a break from the digital age and focus on community and nature. Just don’t say we told you so.

DOMAINE DE MANVILLE
Provencal Estate of the Arts
The swimming pool presents itself as a Mediterranean basin surrounded by large stones.
The Domaine de Manville was once a progressive farming compound devoted to agriculture, with sheepfolds, barns, and rustic outbuildings dotting its 250 acres. The conversion of the estate into five-star boutique hotel accommodations (complete with a sprawling, naturalistic golf course, soaring atriums, shaded interior courtyards, a spa to disappear in, and nine private villas) was accomplished by architect Mireille Pellen and interior designer Annie Zeau. They combined luxed-up accoutrements with traditional construction techniques in order to maintain the historic rural charms of its location in Les Baux de Provence, nestled in the Alpilles mountains.

The winter garden, created as an extension of the spa, is on the ground floor of a renovated shed. The reinterpretation was inspired by the impressive agricultural structures of the area.
Lying between the Rhône and Durance rivers, not far from La Camargue, the Alpilles range crowns the Arles area like a rocky island amidst the plains. The majestic city of Les Baux de Provence has held proudly forth since the Middle Ages. From the ruins of the medieval castle, the views are stunning: Arles, La Camargue, and the southern French plains, and in the distance, the Mediterranean Sea. The heart of these environs still beats to the drum of daily country life, attentive to the ripening tomatoes, the grape harvests and the olive gatherings, the transhumance of the sheep, and other signs of the changing seasons. Experience it in the highest style and comfort at Domaine de Manville.

ecognizable from hosting and competing on television cooking shows, he’s also the author of several lip-smacking cookbooks. Stone honed his talents in kitchens around the globe, most notably working in Michelinstarred restaurants in London under renowned Chef Marco Pierre White. During his cooking journey, he learned the importance of working with only the best local and seasonal ingredients. Respect for ingredients has become a driving force at both of his restaurants. Yet before all of this training and celebrity, Stone was a young boy learning to cook under his first teacher, his beloved grandmother Maude. Named in her honor, his first solo restaurant opened in 2014 and pays beautiful homage to his granny. A small, impeccably decorated dining room with a visible kitchen makes you feel like you’re in a home of love. Delicate seasonal set menus are served with mismatched china and silverware, and after rave reviews, Stone embarked on opening a second restaurant with his brother Luke in July of 2016.
As with Maude, Gwen Butcher Shop & Restaurant activates all of your senses, but in an entirely different way. Upon entering, guests are welcomed with a visual feast. Locally sourced meat sits in cabinets, hangs in glassenclosed dry age rooms, roasts over fire pits, and cooks in an open kitchen, all expertly orchestrated by Stone and his team. Displays contain pâtés, terrines, rillettes, salami, chorizo, and other charcuteries made on-site daily. The beautiful Art Deco dining room complements the showcased meat wonderfully, creating a fully immersive dining experience where patrons savor a meal surrounded by its disparate ingredients. True to Stone’s style, seasonal side dishes accompany the meal, sourced from the Hollywood Farmers Market just steps away. Chef Stone’s personality, attention to detail, and love of food shine in both of his restaurants. A man of many hats, we can’t wait to see what he cooks up next.

Lyon: the Road to Gold
An ebullient Team USA celebrates its victory
Every two years, the city of Lyon, France, whips itself into a meringue of excitement for the Bocuse d’Or culinary contest. After months of mise en place, 24 international top chefs cook their bundts off as they compete for the most prestigious trophy in the world of gastronomy. The stakes are high—the grand finale determines the best epicurean vision and talent in the world. This year the American team, led by head chef Mathew Peters, won the top prize for the first time in history.

The winning, winsome meat platter
Created in 1987 by the French chef Paul Bocuse with the purpose of recognizing and appreciating chefs, the Bocuse d’Or contest celebrated its 30th anniversary this January. The United States, one of the countries selected for the 2017 grand finale, snagged the top prize after five hours and 35 minutes (not a second more) of preparation in the midst of a vast conference hall with hundreds of fans blowing horns and cheering on their home teams, as if the Super Bowl, the World Cup, and the World Series were happening in the same room. The winner was Chef Peters, a Per Se and French Laundry alum and a protégé of Thomas Keller, who masterfully completed the two requisite challenges. (Keller’s Beverly Hills Bouchon Bakery, by the way, recently picked up a prize for Los Angeles’s best baguettes.) The first test was to present Bresse chicken with crayfish and two sides on a tray, a throwback to the first theme challenge back in 1987 and a classic recipe of Lyon cuisine that has since become a universally celebrated dish. The second challenge was a daunting, modern first for the competition: present a tasty and gorgeous vegan dish on a platter for 14 judges. Team USA stepped up to the plate with California asparagus and cremini ’shrooms, a Meyer lemon curd, and faux-Parmesan cheese made from yeast and almonds. Toques off to you, Mathew!

So much so that I recently added it to our by-the-glass list. If you like pinot grigio, then you have to try Biblia Chora Assyrtico. Pair it with a crudo or your favorite raw-bar selection.” 2015 Lewis Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley “With an elegant texture that’s supple and smooth, Lewis Sauvignon Blanc does not have the intense aromas of grapefruit or green grass which you might expect from a sauvignon blanc. Instead you find notes of key lime and gooseberry. This versatile wine pairs well with a fish entrée, such as Chilean sea bass.” 2016 Copain Pinot Noir Tous Ensemble Rosé, Mendocino “This California wine is made from different pinot noirs from all of Copain’s vineyards, hence the name Tous Ensemble (all together in French). It has soft peach notes but also a subtle hint of roasted orange rind. It’s light, but still has body and is perfect with Baltaire’s shellfish plateau of lobster, crab, shrimp, and oysters.”

MAR VISTA FARMERS MARKET 3826 Grand View Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90066
The Mar Vista Farmers Market has been bringing fresh produce from California farmers to this westward community since 2006. On Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. folks shop and eat while supporting community development and preserving family farms at the same time. Vendors sell fruits and vegetables, flowers, nuts, and fresh meat and seafood, along with grab-and-go meals—snack on Argentinian empanadas, Mexican and Indian food, crepes, vegan fare, and BBQ till the cows come home. The market also provides dog sitting every Sunday. Animals are verboten by the health department, but there’s an area for your pooch to rest, hydrate, and hang with a puppy pro while you shop around. Kids are catered to as well as pets: The market offers weekly free craft workshops, face painting, child-friendly cooking classes, and storytelling. There’s something for darn near everyone, so we’d advise you to take stock in this market.

NOUVEL © GASTON BERGERET
BY VINCENT FEUILLET
JEAN NOUVEL’S WORK HAS BEEN LAUDED WITH PRAISE AND LAVISHED WITH HONORS, INCLUDING THE AGA KHAN AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE AND THE PRITZKER AWARD, THE NOBEL PRIZE OF ARCHITECTURE. HIS DISTINCTIVE STYLE CONTRASTS LIGHT AND SHADOW AND PLAYS WITH TRANSPARENCY AND REFLECTIONS, AND HIS GLASS-AND-METAL FACADES, POPPING UP INTERNATIONALLY FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS, HAVE BECOME AN IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZABLE SIGNATURE. AND WHAT DOES HE LOVE THE MOST? TRANSPARENCY. HE UTILIZES IT IN IMAGINATIVE WAYS JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD.
Now 71 and the head of Ateliers Jean Nouvel, where he directs a team of 140 people, the urban planner has created dozens of museums, office buildings, theaters, apartment buildings, and private homes across the planet. Some of his most well-known creations are the opera house in Lyon, with its glass barrel vault, the Cartier Foundation and the Philharmonie building in Paris, the Dentsu Tower in Tokyo, the Abu Dhabi Louvre, and the Artists’ Garden in Qingdao. Tall, bald, and dressed in black, Nouvel pushes the envelope of his profession on every project, creating his own rules as the work progresses. He places importance on the context and concept of architecture, emphasizing that he combats “generic productions, all those pre-thought-out buildings.”
egoreview los angeles 01
Whether in Copenhagen, Sydney, New York, or Abu Dhabi, his works are to be read “dynamically and in perspective.” Between urban architecture projects, this jack-of-all-trades has designed furniture, a tea set for Alessi, and a limited edition cologne bottle for L’Homme by Yves Saint Laurent. He has also staged dance spectacles and created museum exhibitions for Paris’s Musée du Quai Branly, which he also designed. One need only look to the work to see that his are not pre-thought-out ideas, and that each project is a new creation individually designed to best meet its needs in the most beautiful way possible.

MINNEAPOLIS
GUTHRIE THEATER In 2006 Jean Nouvel completed his first American project, the Guthrie Theater, with an amazing metal-and-glass exterior that evokes the silos and mills of working docks along the nearby Mississippi River. The large cylinder contains the main auditorium, which seats more than 1,100 spectators. On the ground floor the transparency of the glass seems to invite and welcome the audience inside. The other levels are covered in midnight blue stainless steel, with engraved scenes from the theater’s long history animating the surfaces. The building enjoys a harmonious interplay between its horizontal and vertical elements, and by the play of light and reflections.

At the heart of the Parc de la Villette in Paris is a stunning 2,400-seat music hall designed by Nouvel. Thanks to impeccable ergonomics and acoustics, the Philharmonie de Paris is revered as one of the premier symphonic halls of the world. The building was conceived with sight lines and soundwaves in mind, resulting in a jaw-dropping exterior with 340,000 birds etched into the surface, a walkable rooftop, and an auditorium that causes musicians, audiences, and architects to marvel. The walls in Nouvel’s auditorium are covered with movable panels that bounce sound throughout the hall in multiple directions, immersing the audience. The hall also houses rehearsal space, restaurants, chamber music studios, and an educational center that hosts work shops, lectures, and concerts.

The tower’s innovative exposed structural system is known as the “diagrid.” This robust, yet visually delicate network of concrete elements (steel-reinforced concrete with aluminum exterior) is an efficient structural system that responds to and complements the unique geometry of 53W53. It allows each segment of the building to follow its own geometry, and the overall tower to reach a great height with a minimum number of interior columns. Expressed inside every residence like an abstract sculpture, the diagrid makes Nouvel’s bold architecture an integral part of the living experience.

NATIONAL MUSEUM
LOUVRE
All climates like exceptions. Warmer when it is cold. Cooler in the tropics. People do not resist thermal shock well. Nor do works of art. Such elementary observations have influenced the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It wishes to create a welcoming world serenely combining light and shadow, reflection and calm. It is a project founded on a major symbol of Arab architecture: the dome. But here, with its evident shift from tradition, the dome is a modern proposal. A double dome 180 meters in diameter, offering horizontal, perfectly radiating geometry, a randomly perforated woven material, providing shade punctuated by bursts of sun. The dome gleams in the Abu Dhabi sunshine. At night, this protected landscape is an oasis of light under a starry dome. The Louvre Abu Dhabi becomes the final destination of an urban promenade, a garden on the coast, a cool haven, a shelter of light during the day and evening, its aesthetic consistent with its role as a sanctuary for the most precious works of art.
The National Museum of Qatar is constructed of steel, glass, and concrete, and was designed to mimic the crystallizations and concretions of the desert. It brings the sea to the land, and allows visitors to experience both by providing helicopters and high-speed skiffs to whisk them off to the desert and back. Modern design and nature’s wonders meet at this cultural Qatar champion.

DOHA
TOWER
Development in Qatar has taken an original turn by placing significant emphasis on culture; the declared goal of this shift is to make Qatar, and Doha in particular, the cultural pole of the Gulf region. Daring and innovative, Jean Nouvel has long questioned the traditional, orthogonal, centralcored, curtain wall scheme for “high rise buildings”. Since his project for the Tour Sans Fin he has often explored the concept of a circular-plan tower with a peripheral structural system that allows for open, better-lit spaces with more control over interior lighting and abundant views onto the landscape. The tower is accessed from a landscaped garden that gently slopes towards a large lobby under a canopy of glass. The vegetation and glass canopy overlap so as to blur the distinction between nature and the man-made environment. An atrium rises to the 27th floor, 112 meters high. This slim, shimmering, silver laced silhouette on the horizon is certain to become a landmark -- a beautiful symbol for the Corniche of Doha.

CALL 911
19 63 The First 911 | Birth of a Legend The 911 won the hearts of sports car enthusiasts from the outset. The prototype was first unveiled at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show in 1963 as the 901, and renamed the 911 for its market launch in 1964. Its air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine delivered 130 hp, giving it an impressive top speed of 131 mph. Today it is considered the quintessential sports car, the benchmark for all others. The 911 is also the central point of reference for all other Porsche series. From the Cayenne to the Panamera, every Porsche is the most sporting automobile in its category, and each one carries a piece of the 911 philosophy.

Like no other vehicle, the 911 reconciles apparent contradictions such as sportiness and everyday practicality, tradition and innovation, exclusivity and social acceptance, design and functionality. A newly developed turbocharger for 3.0 liter six-cylinder flat engine increases power to 331kw (450PS). The engine delivers 22 kW (30 hp) more than the 911 Carrera S. More than 850,000 Porsche 911s have been built, making it one of the most successful sports cars in the world.

The Ghosts of Ralph Ziman A South African filmmaker shifts his focus to art with a social agenda
Dangerous Allure #15
If you’ve tooled around Venice Beach lately, you’ve probably seen the bold and beautiful street murals of Ralph Ziman. In addition to painting and printmaking, he’s an accomplished filmmaker with more than 400 music videos (for a spectrum of artists such as Ozzie Osbourne, Shania Twain, and Michael Jackson) and six feature films under his directorial belt. He’s also an activist. The stink of apartheid had another decade to linger over South Africa when Ziman left the country in 1983,

at the age of 19, but its demise resulted in an entirely new arsenal of issues. The arms boycott was lifted and national debt and civil unrest escalated. “Since apartheid ended, the international arms trade has mostly flowed into Africa,” says Ziman. “Guns are cheap and they’re everywhere. AK-47s alone have put more people in the ground than the atom bomb and AIDS combined.” To call attention to this crisis, he worked with craftsmen in Johannesburg to create beaded AK-47 replicas, which he then photographed with
the artisans and other models for the Ghosts series. He’s exhibited the pictures and sculptures together around the world, symbolically reversing the arms trade by sending work out of the country. Ziman is similarly appalled and inspired by the plight of endangered animals, routinely hunted for sport in his homeland. “I was travelling from Atlanta to Joburg three times a year, and I would see these Ted Nugent–looking guys, with bellies and bush gear, picking up their hunting
81
rifles from the oversized-luggage counter.” In his Bones series, he embellished resin casts of skulls and photographed them in the wild. He is also in the process of beading a 10-ton Casspir indestructible military vehicle that he’ll use to re-create iconic scenes from the 70s and 80s. Whether his subject is guns, animals, or tanks, Ziman’s message is crystal clear: It’s better to make art than war. Ralph Ziman lives and works in Venice, California.

The Coachella Valley hosted some highly Instagrammable guests recently—more than 15 art pieces were on display throughout the towns and deserts of the area from February through April as part of Desert X, a bold project in its inaugural year. The curated exhibition of site-specific work by established and emerging artists took place from the Salton Sea to the San Bernardino Mountains, and the desert landscape was the star of the show. Each artist was offered a space in which to interact, and created an installation for that specific location. The result is artwork that amplifies and articulates global and local issues and showcases the landscapes, societies, and histories of Southern California, while at the same time celebrating contemporary art worldwide.

“The landscape of harsh desert, high mountains, lush golf courses, and a vanishing sea holds a rich history and maintains mythical proportions in the narrative of the American West—one that includes ancient Indian tribes, prospectors, pioneers, and cowboys,” explains Susan Davis, Desert X founder and board president. “We see this as unique in shining a spotlight on the rich preexisting architectural, natural, and cultural legacies of the area, while offering the public a way to explore, activate, and interrogate current and historic issues through contemporary, creative practices.” Desert X is a free exhibition funded by its board of directors, philanthropists of the desert community that work internationally in creative fields. Many members also sit on boards of world-renowned art institutions, helping spread art awareness around the world. Neville Wakefield was selected to serve as the artistic director for 2017, a perfect choice considering his many contributions to creating and curating art in alternative spaces.

The art itself ranged from Norma Jeane’s timid robotic vehicle to Jennifer Bolande’s trompe l’oeil billboards to Doug Aitken’s full-sized house of mirrors. Maps were provided to navigate the exhibition’s circuitous route, which required a car and more than a day’s time, and led to remote parts of the desert and art you will never experience again. At the beginning you feel you’re in the middle of nowhere, but somewhere along the journey you begin to realize that nowhere is in fact quite a special somewhere. Perhaps the desert is not such a blank canvas after all.

CHIHULY: THE GLASS MAGICIAN PHOTOS CHIHULY STUDIO
Dale Chihuly is one of the most recognized artists of his time. He’s credited for pushing the boundaries of the glass medium and advancing it from craft to fine art, taking glassblowing beyond the creation of utilitarian forms to create large-scale, gravity-defying assembled sculptures and site-specific installations. His energetic, imaginative artworks come to life in a hot shop with the assistance of a team of glassblowers, a method practiced by traditional Italian glass artisans for centuries. During his career Chihuly has mastered the magical, translucent, and sensual qualities of glass, creating works that transform viewers. Some of his most iconic works and groundbreaking explorations in color, light, and form will be showcased in Chihuly at the Catalina Island Museum.

“Much of Chihuly’s art makes reference to, or is inspired by, natural elements. This makes Catalina Island the ideal setting,” said Julie Perlin Lee, executive director of the Catalina Island Museum. “A museum-wide installation such as this also showcases the versatility of the museum’s galleries and plazas. We look forward to welcoming fans of Chihuly’s work—both new and established—to the island for a unique experience.” The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to enjoy a major museum exhibition of Chihuly’s artwork in Southern California. Chihuly at the Catalina Island Museum opened to the public on March 26 and remains on view through December 11, 2017.

F*ck Love Michael and Sarah Bennett
Homegoing Yaa Gyasi
Next Year, For Sure Zoey Leigh Peterson
The Rules Do Not Apply Ariel Levy
Swimming Lessons Claire Fuller
The profanity in the title is a strong signal that this, like their first book, F*ck Feelings, is going to take an irreverent approach to the topic. Michael Bennett is a psychiatrist, and gives no-nonsense advice on how to readjust expectations and our own actions and responsibilities in the quest for love. Sarah Bennett, his daughter, is a comedian and makes sure the book is lively and funny. It’s like a series of sessions with a therapist who has solid advice for how to be better in relationships, all for the cost of a single book.
Gyasi’s debut novel tells the tale of a multigenerational family split by slavery on both sides of the Atlantic, leading up to the present day. It begins with the story of two half sisters in what is now Ghana; one is married to an English slaver, the other is sold into slavery by that same man’s company. Over generations the family’s fortunes and misfortunes spool out in engaging writing, making me wish each vignette was a little longer and I could read more of this clan’s stories.
In Peterson’s debut novel, protagonists Kathryn and Chris find themselves making small decisions that have a large impact. They are a lovely and contented couple, but after years together they believe their union can withstand a hurdle that often ends other relationships. Chris develops a crush on a woman and Kathryn encourages him to follow through with it, forcing them to face unexpected challenges. It’s a quiet drama that I couldn’t put down.
Levy’s memoir explores the beginning and the end of her marriage. She chronicles a fateful writing assignment that began with her pregnant, married, and feeling successful, and ends with her no longer having any of that. Her grief at the loss of her child, and the bittersweet memories of meeting her wife and their relationship blooming never veer into mawkishness. Her story caught me, and her prose kept me reading until I felt I knew her myself.
In Fuller’s sophomore effort, a long-lost wife recounts the story of her marriage through letters left in her husband’s books. After Gil, the widowed husband, believes he sees his late wife on a busy street, he has an accident leaving him dependent on his grown daughters. The women return home to settle family matters, never knowing the books they are sorting through hold the secrets to their parents’ relationship. It is an excellent follow-up to her debut novel, Our Endless Numbered Days.
