Was hat Obereggen so erfolgreich gemacht?

Was the local population always in favour of these developments?
OBEREGGEN A Sustainability Success Story Until the 1960s the people in Val d’Ega mainly lived off farming and forestry work, with many young residents leaving the region in search of new opportunities. Today, however, the population numbers are stable and the residents of Val d’Ega can look to the future with confidence. This transformation is thanks to a number of pioneers who recognised the potential of tourism at an early stage and were the driving force behind opening up the valley to visitors in winter. Two of the main personalities behind this movement were ski resort managers Georg Weissensteiner and Siegfried Pichler. We sat down with Georg, Siegfried and PR manager Thomas Ondertoller to look back on the early beginnings of winter tourism in the region and to evaluate how it has progressed to where it is today. The Obereggen ski resort was officially founded in 1970 and opened its first ski lifts two years later. Today it is known as the Ski Center Latemar and is very popular with both locals and guests from around the world. What do you think has made it so successful? G. W.: We all knew right from the start that the resort would only be able to flourish in the long term if it was connected with the nearby resorts of Pampeago and Predazzo, which already existed at the time. That was definitely a key factor. S. P.: One of the big things which contributed to the success of the resort was the use of snow-making technology right from the start. We were the first resort in the region to introduce a system of snow cannons able to cover mostly of the pistes. That gave Obereggen a certain reputation – for example, in the late 1980s, when there were several winters with little snowfall, people came to us because they knew we were able to offer snowsure slopes and excellent conditions.
G. W.: When we first set up the resort we needed capital, so we went from door to door to try and get local people to support our initiative as stakeholders. It worked really well. The people saw the resort not so much as an investment but more as a kind of cooperative. I think the development of the resort actually drew people in the valley, where we have a very tightknit community, even closer together. S. P.: The people who supported us back then – farmers, craftsmen, blue-collar workers, tradesmen – were dotted all across the valley, such was the breadth of the support given to the project. One of the main reasons for that was the fact that right from the start we committed ourselves to protecting the local environment. In everything we have done over the years we have always paid close attention to the impact on the landscape, for example when it comes to building new pistes. Whenever we make a new ski slope the top soil has to be removed, but we always put it back on when the work is done. As early as the 1980s we started taking soil samples and even had a special Obereggen seed mixture made in order to preserve the diversity of plants and flowers in our meadows. Another thing which was very important to us right from the start was to be as efficient and economic as possible with the water needed to make artificial snow. Since 2004 Obereggen has been officially certified in line with the ISO norm 14001. Are visitors and guests aware of all these efforts to protect the environment? T. O.: Absolutely. We get really positive reactions from guests in response to the measures we have taken and continue to take in this regard. We well as our efforts to reduce water use, to use as many local materials as possible and to avoid waste wherever possible, here in Obereggen we have two “lighthouse projects”: the district heating plant and the Berghütte Oberholz. The former is heated using biomass from Val d’Ega and heats all the houses and businesses in Obereggen. This means that since 2007 we have been able to save 500,000 litres of heating oil a year. The latter is a mountain hut which has been designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Water pipes run deep into the ground, where they are heated by the earth’s natural warmth. Ecology and sustainability are topics which are really important to us. People who pay attention to these things in their everyday lives also want to spend their holidays in a place which lives and embodies these same values.

No?! In quasi nessun altro comprensorio dell'Alto Adige è possibile sciare in modo sostenibile come qui!
Is it possible to go skiing on holiday and still do your bit to protect the environment? Absolutely! The best example of this green approach to winter sports can be found in the resort of Carezza, the first ski resort in the province of Alto Adige to become a member of the Climate Neutral Alliance. That makes Carezza without a doubt one of the most eco-friendly ski resorts in the region. After all, a landscape as beautiful and precious as the Dolomites must be protected for future generations.
SAPEVATE CHE…
DID YOU KNOW THAT …
All’inizio dell’inverno, appena le temperature scendono fino a toccare i -7 °C/ -10 °C, l’intero comprensorio sciistico viene innevato in appena 80 ore.
… the snow you ski on in Carezza is much more ecologically effective today than it was just a few years ago? Custom planning and intelligent management of the snow-making facilities ensure that as soon as the temperature falls to between -7 and -10 °C in early winter the entire resort is covered with snow in just 80 hours. This system not only uses less water and electricity but also means skiers and snowboarders can enjoy top conditions on the slopes all the way through until the end of March.

I re del formaggio
The kings of Cheese
IL PERFEZIONISTA
THE PERFECTIONIST
Stefan Köhl leaves nothing to chance. With hard work and an iron will, the man from the village of Nova Ponente has been in charge of the Learner Hofkäserei dairy farm since 2013. After many years of learning the skills necessary to become a master cheesemaker, he has finally realised his dream of opening his own business. “The secret to good cheese can be found out there on the meadows and pastures,” explains Stefan. For the friendly man from Val d’Ega, nothing is more important than respecting the rhythm of nature and making the most of the wonderful landscape this region has been blessed with. Everything which goes into his cheese comes from his own farm. “The cows which give the milk are fed only on fresh grass or natural hay. Compared with other cows, mine produce only half as much milk – but it a lot lower in fat than conventional milk,” explains the 33-year-old. “High fat milk has to be skimmed before it can be delivered, and every mechanical step in the chain has a negative impact on the overall quality.” Along this production chain, everything is carefully planned: from milking the cows all the way through to packaging and selling the cheese in local shops. So what does Stefan do when he finally has a spare minute to himself? “I think about new types of cheese I could make,” he laughs.
THE ORIGINAL
The Hagneralm hut has existed for 30 years. Sitting in front of the building with its dark wooden tiles on the facade and red geraniums under every window is “Hagner-Hansi”, a true original and maker of fine cheese for many decades. Raw, authentic, traditional – words that describe Hansi and his cheese. He spends two to three hours a day making cheese – not including the time it takes to tend to the large wheels which are finished but still in the process maturing. “We don’t must make cheese and leave it at that. We use herbs and wine to flavour and enrich our cheese,” he explains. All in all, Hansi makes between six and ten different varieties of cheese. These are served to hungry guests in the hut. “Lots of people ask me why I don’t make more cheese, but I’m not interested in volume. If you start making large amounts then you lose the originality and authenticity. We only make our cheese from May to October. If it gets too hot during this time then we keep our ten cows in the shed during the day and only send them out at night. That is less stressful for the animals and has a big impact on the quality of the milk – and, therefore, on the quality of the cheese.”
THE FRIEND
Markus Lantschner is a friendly kind of guy. A family man. Proud of his region. Someone who puts all this focus and effort into his passion: cheese-making. “Our farm, the Ebenhof, hasn’t always been a dairy farm,” Markus explains. “Before I went to Salern to train as a cheese-maker and helped my parents build up the dairy, I never would have thought about making cheese for a living. But as soon as I started learning about the process I fell in love with it. Today I am lucky enough to do what I have always dreamt of doing: working the land and living off what our own farm gives us.” Markus makes eight different varieties of cheese at the Ebenhof, which are left to mature for anywhere between two weeks and six months before being sold in the farm shop, at local markets and to hotels in Collepietra and the surrounding region.

“From Collepietra there is a family-friendly path leading through forests and meadows in an easterly direction to the earth pyramids. Along the way you can enjoy fabulous views of Rosengarten and Sciliar mountains. The path Dosser-Kreuz eventually takes you to the upper section of the earth pyramids – fascinating towers of rocky earth topped in winter with little white hats. One of the most beautiful spots in the region!”
SCHWUNGVOLL IM SCHNEE · Langlaufen in Deutschnofen
2
SPORT IN THE SNOW · Cross-Country Skiing in Nova Ponente Helene Thaler
Head of the Nova Ponente tourism office
“I love cross-country skiing and can often be found out on the trails early in the morning. For me there is nothing better than cruising along a perfectly groomed cross-country trail as the day begins to break. There aren’t many others out on the trails at this time of the morning, so sometimes my only companions are the wild hares and deer native to the region. My favourite trails include the one from the Wölflhof inn to the Unterkaplunhof inn – 15 kilometres of flat skiing with just a few uphill sections to get the heart beating.”

Alexandra Näckler Social media manager, Val d’Ega tourism board
LAURIN’S LIGHTS · Winter Walk to the Frin Meadows
“My favourite walk, which I always do with my four-legged friend Filou, starts right outside my front door in Carezza. Armed with my trusty SLR camera, I walk to the Grand Hotel and follow the winter walking trails number 6 and number 16 towards the Moseralm and then up to the sunny Frin Meadows, which offer truly breathtaking views of the Rosengarten and Latemar mountains. I then take paths 1A and 6 back. Hobby photographers should wait for the sun to set to capture the incredible shades of red, pink and orange which light up the rocky faces of the Rosengarten mountains.”
WINTER ATMEN · Schneeschuhwanderung von Jochgrimm nach Deutschnofen
4
WINTER WALK · Snowshoeing from Jochgrimm to Nova Ponente Brigitte Zelger
Hotel Pfösl Herb expert and hiking guide
“When things get too busy on the ski slopes, I like to head off the beaten track and find peace and quiet in the mountains. A good place to do this is the Jochgrimm pass. I take trail number 1 via Neuhütt and the Laab Alm hut to Nova Ponente, enjoying the fantastic views of some of the region’s most famous mountains such as the Latemar, Zanggen, Corno Bianco and Corno Nero. I often pause and do a few breathing exercises as I gaze out over the mountains. There is no better place to be at one with yourself and breathe in the clean, crisp mountain air. What a way to relax!”
IN DIE STILLE · Schneeschuhwanderung vom Karer See zum Mitterleger

SOUND OF SILENCE · Snowshoe Walk from Lago di Carezza to Mitterleger Carmen Kohler
Engel Gourmet & Spa
The forest surrounding the Lago di Carezza is a special place for me where I can relax – and in winter there are far fewer people there than during the rest of the year. I often take trail 11 from the Lago di Carezza to Mitterleger. It leads past frozen underground springs and out of the forest to a small house. The sight of the sheer rock faces stretching up into the sky makes me reflect on life and feel the incredible power of the Latemar mountains.“

E R E S N U , R E T E N I B E W I L E T S R E D
„MAMA, SKIFAHREN MACHT SCHLAU!“
„PAPA, SKIFAHREN MACHT SPASS!“

Denn hier wird uns Kindern ganz schön was geboten! INS SKIFAHREN. IN DEN WINTER IN CAREZZA!
L’inverno, il nostro primo amore
Winter, Our First Love
We all remember our children’s first steps – and probably their first steps on snow too! Parents who love winter sports are keen to introduce their kids to the joy of skiing as early as possible so that they develop a passion for whizzing down the slopes. After all, skiing is much more than just exercise. So, Mum and Dad – listen to your kids! Here’s what they want to tell you on the topic of skiing:
“MAMMA, SCIARE CI RENDE FURBI COME VOLPI!”
Ovvio, in fondo sciare è divertentissimo!
“MUM, SKIING MAKES YOU CLEVER!”
Did you know that skiing makes you clever? Exercise in general has been shown to improve how our brains work and our ability to remember things. Skiing trains children’s coordination, balance, ability to concentrate and decision-making skills in stressful situations. It helps us learn and stay motivated. And, of course, it also helps us spend time out in the fresh mountain air – where our little brains work soooooo much better!
“DAD, SKIING IS FUN!”
That’s true! During exercise dopamine is released, which helps create connections between synapses in our brains. That means skiing helps us to learn. And on top of that it is simply great fun! Within just a few days we know how to start, stop and turn. Glistening snow, fun with new friends and lots of mega cool scenery. I love skiing!
“MUM, DAD – CAREZZA IS GREAT”
There is so much to see, do and discover here! The King Laurin Kinderland, the Naniland and the children’s area at Karer Pass are three places where ski courses for youngsters teach us the basics every day for 2.5 hours from Monday to Friday. There are also bouncy castles, snow hills to slide down, easyto-use conveyor belt lifts, special children’s lifts – and even a Myths and Legends Trail and a King Laurin Piste! Learning to ski with experienced instructors and new friends is so much fun that I never want to stop! Did you know that the Carezza Ski School also offers professional childcare for an hour, half a day or a whole day? Or we could visit the snowpark together, a paradise for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. It now has a new Tunnel World – the only of its kind in the province of Alto Adige. And we can also go tobogganing in Carezza if we want.
DEAR MUM AND DAD. WE HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH CAREZZA. THE SNOW. THE SKIING. EVERYTHING IS JUST SOOOO COOL!
CARA MAMMA, CARO PAPÀ, LO VEDETE ANCHE VOI COME CI BRILLANO GLI OCCHI?! CI SIAMO INNAMORATI DELLA NEVE. DEGLI SCI. DELL’INVERNO A CAREZZA!

ARCHITECTURAL HIGHLIGHTS IN OBEREGGEN
UNGEWÖHNLICH, URGEMÜTLICH – UNBEDINGT! UN MIX ACCOGLIENTE TRA INNOVAZIONE E TRADIZIONE EYE-CATCHING, EXCLUSIVE – EXTRAORDINARY!

A region as breathtakingly beautiful as the Dolomites Site deserves more than just any old run-of-the-mill architecture. In and around Obereggen you will find plenty of fine examples of different, daring and delightful designs fusing the traditional and modern elements.
A HUT WITH A TWIST: Berghütte Oberholz, 2,096 m
When designing the Berghütte Oberholz, the architects Peter Pichler and Pavol Mikolajcak drew on the nature of the Dolomites and the local building tradition of Val d’Ega for inspiration. The three main windows of the building reach high into the sky like the branches of a fallen tree, stretching out towards the surrounding mountain peaks. The gabled roof and facade covered with larchwood tiles are typical of huts in the region. Inside the hut, clean lines and arched ceilings give the impression of a church nave. Open, wide and spectacular – those are three of the best words to describe the Berghütte Oberholz, which manages to create a warm and cosy atmosphere thanks to the use of natural materials from the region.
Urban Club Flair in Nature: LOOX
The main eye-catching highlight of this brand new après-ski location at the bottom of the ski lifts in Obereggen is the gabled roof, which arches up high and then swoops down low. Designed as a joint project by the architects Geisler&Trimmel and Unisono, its organic and flowing structure strikes a stark contrast with the craggy peaks of the Latemar mountains. The double-curved wooden beams give the construction a light and clean appearance, while the large glass facade draws the natural surroundings into the building. There is a large area in the middle for parties and dancing, surrounded by lounge islands for those who want to relax and enjoy a little more privacy.
