LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

W

ell, who do we think we are starting a magazine? The Eau Gallie Arts District (the district) is growing with more businesses, people, and activities daily. That means we have news and information we can’t effectively distribute via social media— which not everyone uses, or the post gets buried in Algorithm Heaven—so an online, bi-monthly magazine is the solution for 2020. Thanks to our stacked talent of contributors who happen to be fans of the district, we expect to deliver a great resource to everyone.

Why the title, the Eau G? Most of our readers will recognize the intended pun which refers to something as the original, old school, and authentic. There is nothing in Brevard County more original than Eau Gallie. An independent city before Rockledge, Eau Gallie served once

as the county seat, the first newspaper and bank, and the original site for the University of Florida (until the building burned down and political decisions relocated it). Eau Gallie was a popular stop on the railroad for vacationing in one of its many hotels, and one with a speak-easy. The founding fathers, with the help of the railroad, put us on the map with new industries, and history was made when Carrie Rossetter was the first woman to hold Standard Oil leases left to her by her father, which she held for 62 years. Carrie was certainly the OG and her former home is now the site of EGAD Main Street’s Women We Love annual event in March.

Obviously our first intention is to provide affordable advertisement to district merchants, but as space allows, we accept advertisements from the area. An advertorial is a special page dedicated to a business who wishes to promote their business beyond an advertisement—and that might include larger photographs. Also, content written by you is welcome, with the same caveat that the magazine is primarily focused on the arts district, but related content could work well. Contact me if either of those options is of interest to you.

With that said, the arts district is moving full steam ahead in the future and making way for new industries, people and talents. All aboard!

ears ago, my future husband surprised me with sterling silver earrings he bought at Artworks.

They were wired primitive little girls in dresses. “I got these for you!” he said as I examined the sweet but interesting selection he had made. I wore them that day, but they ended up sitting on my jewelry stand for years. Two years later, on a warm October Friday, I decided to wear them. The two wiry girls dangled on my ears as I laid down for my first ultrasound at 20 weeks. I can still remember the exam room vividly—the walls evoked an underwater mural and shiny plastic aquarium sheeting covered

From start to finish, EGAD’s historic fabric has woven through our lives, and we are doubly blessed. the fluorescent lights; my husband was seated next to me with fingers tapping wildly on his device, catching up on Friday emails before the long weekend ahead. I stared down at my belly as the minutes passed while the technician scanned a hidden screen with a pleasant, professional look on her face.

I laid on the chair for what began to feel like an eternity and began to suspect something was terribly wrong. When she excused herself from the dimly lit room.

I knew something was abnormal. My unconcerned husband continued tapping on his phone, assuring me all was well.

Upon her return, she calmly told us she was ready to show us the screen.

“What’s going on?”

“Here’s your baby.”

The news was absolutely bewildering— identical twin babies were growing inside of me. We hadn’t had an early ultrasound and, aside from feeling extra tired, I was experiencing a lovely but uneventful pregnancy. The news of twins was so incredibly surreal and bewildering that I ascended out-of-body. I stared down at myself on the table, an aerial view of my viscous belly, the underwater mural, the radiologist, and sterling girls dancing from side to side on my ears.

The Eau Gallie Arts District was quite literally an incubator for me the following four months as I spent most of my waking hours as a curator on Highland Avenue. The friends and artists I knew showered me with love and affection, and I would tell our bizarre story many times each day to uproarious laughter. Four tiny hands and feet would kick as I worked that autumn’s jampacked season of community events.

Our twin girls were born healthy and happy early the next year. They were an overwhelming gift that unwrapped over each month of that piercingly challenging first year as layer after layer would expose moments of tenderness, awe, frustration, fear, and love. Our first outings, which we attempted on zero sleep and lots of anxiety, were to the arts districts and museums we loved.

They were comfortable, welcoming environments (with easy exits) and we learned to be a family in those places.

I am forever changed by this wild experience of twin motherhood and completely raw with love and admiration for our daughters. I am also so grateful for the art festivals, galleries, museums, stores, restaurants, brewing companies, and spaces the Eau Gallie Arts District provided for us to live and grow as a young family. From start to finish, EGAD’s historic fabric has woven through our lives, and we are doubly blessed. ▪

f buildings could talk, EGAD’s Ginter Building could regale folks for hours with its stories.

The modest, unassuming structure at the corner of Highland Ave. and St. Clair was a child of the Florida Land Boom, built in 1926 by contractor Clifford Ginter (pronounced “gin” as in the popular libation). Unexpected embellishments adorn its simple Mediterranean style façade, including pilasters and an ornamental cartouche with a tropical scene.

The site once was part of Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast railway as an 1893 spur line that connected the railway to the river as the only direct rail-to-water

link for transporting freshly caught fish from the Indian River and lumber from the Florida East Coast Lumber Company.

The track was later moved southward with a train cut, where cars could be unhooked and separated, just north of the building.

The fortunes of the Ginter Building rose and waned according to the vagaries of the times. Doctors were its first tenants, but not soon after, the Depression reared its ugly head and business shrunk. Ginter and his family moved into the building and rented the rest to boarders. The family remained through World War II, when they opened a nursery school near the back of the building.

After the Ginters left, the building accommodated everything from apartments to a chocolate shop, dress shop and hair salon, but the years began to wear down the structure, until 2018, when the Ginter’s knight in shining armor appeared in the form of Frank Schrader, president of Elbow Creek Properties.

Schrader knew it would be a challenge to bring the Ginter back up to its former self, but its history and its solid construction were too appealing.

“I had previously restored a property on Highland built by Mr. Ginter around the same time and admired his dedication to quality,” said Schrader.

The six-month extreme makeover was a self-led project with the help of Russ Debose of Fined Tuned. Schrader wanted to honor the Ginter’s past as he brought the sturdily built building into the 21st. century.

“We used period colors and kept the outside in its original design, including the original cartouche or concrete relief on the front,” explained Schrader.

“I did not have an original look in mind other than to respect what we thought it might have looked like, including the awnings on the second floor. When we bought it, it had been years since any real work had been done to it, so it was hard to gauge exactly what it may have looked like.”

Resplendent in its new colorful coat, the Ginter is now home to Schrader’s real estate office, as well as Allaprima styling group that has been part of the Ginter’s history for several years.

As a bonus, Schrader also included a 400-square-foot apartment that is a highly desirable offering in the Airbnb portfolio. Outside the building, a historic sign tells visitors a little of its past.

“We are also putting together a guide to local places which will include some of the highlights of its history,” said Schrader.

Early in 2020, the Ginter will ask yet another chapter to its long history.

“I am going to turn the unused spaces and common areas into art gallery space for local artists,” said Schrader. ▪

ur first words, if we ever knew them, were probably underwhelming. Something along the lines of Mom or Dad or truck. Every year, ol’ Mr. Webster adds an average 600 new words to the dictionary as well as new meanings to old words. Some are portmanteaus (a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, for example motel (from ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’) or brunch (from ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’) and podcast coined from combining iPod and broadcast. New words come from all areas of life--politics, law, business, finance, and pop culture.

A few of the new words of 2019 were deep state, vacay, sesh, inspo (because we weren’t inspired enough to say the whole word inspiration), fabulosity, fatberg (solid waste in the sewer system and we could have lived without that one), solopreneur (which doesn’t have anything to do with the red cup); or snowflake, an existing word, but now meant to imply someone is overly sensitive or regarded as unique or special and not in a positive way. Because there are so many types of discrimination, colorism means a specific kind of discrimination within racial groups favoring people with lighter skin over those with darker skin. After the movie, IT, doesn’t everyone have coulrophobia (abnormal fear of clowns)? From business and finance, we now have pain point, a recurring problem that annoys customers.

DECIDUOUS FRUIT Plant deciduous fruit trees now to give their roots time to develop before the warm, dry spring months. Prune and fertilize existing trees.

COLD PROTECTION Be ready to cover tender plants to minimize damage and be sure covers extend all the way to the ground. Frost or freezes are likely this month and next.

I R R I G AT I O N Irrigate lawns and landscape plants minimally. This is their dormant season.

SHRUBS AND TREES Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form.

A R B O R D AY Celebrate Florida Arbor Day (the third Friday of January) by planting a tree in your yard or community.

CRAPE MYRTLE Remove seed pods, crossing branches, and small twiggy growth to improve the appearance and form of the plant, if desired. Hard pruning is not required.

PESTS Apply horticultural oil to citrus, shrubs, camellias, and deciduous fruit trees while plants are dormant to control scale.

PA L M S Give cold-damaged palms proper care to encourage their recovery.

CITRUS Check citrus trees for scab disease. Apply a copper fungicide when new leaves appear and again when two-thirds of the flower blossoms have fallen.

ROSES Prune roses this month to remove damaged canes and improve the overall form.

After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin 8–9 weeks after pruning.

SHRUBS Fertilize shrubs by spreading fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and watering it in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.

LAWN Apply a preemergence weed killer (not a “weed and feed”) to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4–5 days. Timing is important for good control.

CITRUS AND OTHER FRUIT TREES: Fertilize now if not done in January.

Frequency and amount of fertilization depend on the age of the tree.

ne day a few years ago, this extremely well-dressed, wellmannered young man came into my office and introduced himself as Cameron Mitchell and he was opening an Edward Jones location in the neighborhood. He set about going door to door to meet every single business owner and offered to help do anything.

That right there set him apart from nearly everyone else. Now open for several years, Cameron and I sat down to talk about what he does … exactly…and what were his professional goals. It’s hard to separate professional from personal goals with Cameron. He’s just so dang nice.

He grew up in Maitland, FL, but earned a business/marketing degree from Ole Miss because he (a) wanted a small school; (b) an SEC school; and (c) the girls were pretty. (Sorry, Colleen, aka Mrs. Mitchell.)

He and Colleen met in St. Louis while both were working for Edward Jones.

Cameron said one obstacle to helping people is how the consumer sees themselves, meaning they defer planning for their future because they don’t see themselves as “rich enough” for financial planning. Fortunately, Cameron has a clear idea of who he is – an ambassador for financial literacy. We exercise (or

not) because we plan for it; we do it intentionally, but especially younger people do not employ the same intention towards building future capacity and security. He said people devalue the impact of small scale saving—a little bit each day goes a long way over time. In that, they lose the greatest gift of math for mankind—compound interest. Cameron talks about building a foundation with an emergency bucket, discretionary bucket (stocks and bonds) and a guaranteed bucket (cash, pension, annuity). Dieticians suggest you write down your food intake daily. Cameron suggests the same but with money— every penny that comes in and every dime spent. It’s hard to change habits whether it’s donuts or dollars.

Cameron can be your personal trainer and coach. He’ll make sense of what’s foreign to you and educate you and build good habits and future security. I can’t imagine a better coach or a better man. ▪
