go fulltime!

information booklet about the fulltime opportunities at the EFR

why would I go fulltime?

Pausing your studies and dedicating a (part of) a year to a committee or board might seem a little odd. However, during such a year, you will be able to gain practical experience you will not be able to get in class. Working fulltime on a project results in discovering all aspects of a project; from brainstorming to the marketing and logistics. Furthermore, you will not be going fulltime alone, but with a team of equally motivated and ambitious people. You will share all the milestones and setbacks and therefore develop a very strong friendship!

personal, social and professional development personal

social

Learning to handle big responsibilities, giving effective feedback, receiving criticism and making decisions constrained by a tight schedule, are important skills that are not easily learned in a classroom. You might have had a time management training, or have read something about giving feedback but it is only after you have done it yourself, that you will begin to understand the fine nuances of these soft skills. A fulltime year provides a constant environment to practice and develop these very valuable skills. Also, for EFR board members there are personal coaches at your provision who will assist and advise you on your personal development.

As you will be working together closely with a lot of people, your social skills will develop as well. Managing expectations and communicating appropriately are skills you can only learn by doing. You might have to negotiate a contract or give feedback to your fellow board or committee members.

“During your fulltime year, you will be able to discover and develop new capabilities.

professional

As a fulltimer, you will improve your personal skills enormously. However, you will also improve your professional skills. You will learn how to use your time efficiently, negotiate contracts and network. Furthermore, you get the chance to arrange trainings for soft skills like time management or leadership, or hard skills like inDesign or Salesforce.

network: students, alumni and professionals students

professional

As a fulltimer, you will be at the beating heart of the EFR’s community. You will be at almost every event and thus know all the people in the association – and they will know you!

As a fulltimer, you are constantly in contact with professionals from a wide selection of national and international companies. Every fulltime committee interacts not only with people from the corporate world, but also with other important people ranging from princess Laurentien to the Ambassador of France in the Netherlands.

alumni

The EFR maintains a tightly knit network of former committee and board members. This network dates back to 1964, the EFR’s year of birth. As a fulltimer, you will soon notice that your predecessors are (still) very involved with the EFR’s activities. They are always willing to advice on specific projects, or answer more personal questions about your development or future career choices.

friends for life with your team

You will experience all the ups and downs in a year with a small and close group of people. Together with your team, you will be working a lot on a professional level but perhaps even more on a social level. You will most likely see each other more than your partner, flatmates, clubmates or parents. This will create a bond that lasts a lifetime!

friends for life with the committee members

As an EFR fulltimer, you will belong to the inner circle of the EFR community. Together with the EFR’s tight committee member network, you will join the parties, weekends away, Committee Members Prom and drinks. This results in a broad network that can be very useful for the organisation of your event(s).

friends for life with former boardmembers

Many former boards still see each other on a regular basis. The EFR’s Alumni Organisation hosts some of these reunions in the form of a former board dinner and the alumni day. As a board member you get to know a lot of old board members who help you in many ways and with whom you can have great parties!

coolest year of your life!

During all the serious business, you will also just do a lot of very cool stuff! From meeting the minister for Foreign Trade & Development Cooperation, Lilianne Ploumen, to going to a prom in Vienna with your board. The year is full of unique and fun events - it will be a year you will never forget!

career: some words from recruiters “A fulltime committee is very interesting for your own development as well from a recruitment perspective. First of all you learn a lot from ‘real-life’ situations; during your studies you deal with very controlled problems together with similar people. But you actually start learning when you work in a different team dynamics in a ‘real-world’ environment. From that perspective you develop yourself on social level and that is something I personally really like. Besides that, there are so many other things you can learn from a fulltime committee; you learn to multitask, to set priorities, to communicate, to work together, to broaden your network and last but not least, you are willing to be involved in something else besides your studies and you are willing to work for it. These are all elements you will be confronted with during a future job, so how nice would it be if you can already taste a bit of that right now? Of course it is very fun as well to do a committee! So as a Campus Recruiter I would strongly advise you to do a full-time committee! Good luck! :)”

Jessie de Groot, IT Campus Recruiter ING

“Being in a fulltime committee or board is not only an addition to your CV. You will also strengthen a lot of other competences. For example you will learn how to work in a team, you will have to reflect on your own acts and you will increase your leadership qualities. As the Recruitment Advisor I am responsible for the recruitment and selection of starters in the consultancy brance of KPMG. Therefore, I can certainly say that students with fulltime committee- or boardexperience have developed themselves strongly on the above mentioned points. I would really recommend you to apply for a fulltime position. It does not only add a lot to your personal development, but besides that it is also a really cool experience! Joost Brunninkhuis, Recruitment Advisor KPMG

EFR Business Week: some experiences “I was part of the 32nd edition of the EFR Business Week. It took place in 2016 and has had a tremendous impact on my skillset and views for the future. The EFR Business Week gives the committee a unique opportunity to mould their ideas into reality. A lot of freedom comes with a lot of responsibility of course. As part of the committee you are responsible for your own part within the event, but together you are responsible for the entire EFR Business Week. As Commissioner World of Business, it was my responsibility to come in touch with world renowned world leaders and remarkable individuals. Being able to work alone and in teams is crucial, but eventually communication is key. Every year the committee strives to surpass last year’s performance, which is guided by monthly meetings with the Board of Advice. This Board consists of former EFR Business Week and EFR Board members. Currently I am part of the Board of Advice and it is great to be able to pass my tips on to the new generation of the Business Week. The EFR Business Week experience improved my soft skills in a lot of ways, which turned out to be very valuable in my master, and as I can already tell, will also become important for the next step in my career.” Luc Whittaker, Commissioner World of Business 2015-2016 After EFR Business Week: Vietnam, Thailand and a surf holiday in Spain. Travelled for 3.5 months!

Roxanne Karsten, Chairman 2016-2017 “I am the Chairman of the 33rd EFR Business Week. Being in a fulltime committee has been a fun and educational experience for me. The EFR Business Week is such a diverse event that the skills I gained during this time are countless. The organisation of two congresses and many recruitment activities came with a lot of challenges from which I gained great experiences. As the chairman I am involved in all the decision making and giving the support to all of my committee members. This made my responsibilities extremely diverse, therefore not a single day was the same. Also, the EFR Business Week empowered us to be creative and innovative with the organisation. For example, this year we renewed the website with an entire new layout and we added new recruitment events to the programme. The freedom in our work, resulted in the feeling that the EFR Business Week was our own project. In short, I could really say that organising the EFR business Week added great value to my skillset and was an amazing experience.

ERD: some experiences “Although my time as treasurer for the ERD seems an incredibly long time ago, I still perceive the impact of the experiences I gained back then. One not to underestimate aspect is – although cliché -, the close relationship I have built with my committee members (currently also friends, colleagues and roommates). Now in 2017, our ‘five-year anniversary’ year, the chemistry in the group is still the same and the inside jokes stay hilarious. During my time as ERD committee member, I was not so much focused on job market orientation as I was on organising the event itself. However, the second díd shape my career, through making me better positioned for the fun and challenging job I have right now. The two most important things I have learned are: taking responsibility and having a hands-on mentality. For everything that happens during the ERD, the committee members are eventually responsible. Because of this experience, I felt more secure to take on responsibilities later in life and was better able to prepare for them. This preparation brings me to the second learning point: having a hands-on mentality. Through organising the ERD I experienced that details that would never be in a study book. To close off: while writing this, I actually feel eager to go back five years and apply again. Therefore I can without a doubt, recommend everybody to go for it!”

Iris van Heijden - Treasurer 2011-2012 Supply Chain Strategy Consultant at Deloitte Consulting

Bodine Daams Chairman 2016-2017 “Do you want to challenge yourself on both a professional and social level? The Erasmus Recruitment Days Committee offers you the perfect opportunity! Together with six other people you will organise the largest on-campus recruitment event in Europe. It is great to work with your own committee and be able to give your own twist to the event through policy, inventing the theme, activities and special days! board: some experiences “Last summer I started interviewing for a job and during the interviews I often got the questions: ‘what are you most proud of?’ and ‘what was the most fun experience on your resume?’ and to both these questions my answer was always wholeheartedly: my EFR board year. The number of experiences and things I learned, that are still of great value today, are countless. To name a few: making difficult decisions in stressful situations, how to motivate others and keep a team together, understanding other people’s actions and anticipating on them, persisting when things get tough and daring to be creative and try something new (and not dread the possibility of failure so much). Next to all these useful skills and insights, the EFR board year also gave me something else: a big group of friends and acquaintances. Not only have I experiences many fun moments with them, they have also been a valuable resource in my career so far and I am sure that they will continue to be in the future.” Jolien Paalman, President 2013-2014 Associate at The Boston Consulting Group After EFR: Student Assistant Marketing Department ESE, Intern Economic Affairs of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa.

Cyriel Hakkers Project Manager General 2016-2017 “My name is Cyriel Hakkers and I’m the Project Manager General of the 53rd EFR board. I was asked to write down my experiences of this board year in 200 words, a whole challenge, but isn’t that what this board is all about? It all starts on the day when you meet 7 random people who will become your best friends within a year. After that, you meet over 150 enthusiastic new Committee Members who will all contribute to this EFR year. With this group you will organise so many cool events. For me the best event untill now, was Transform your World, a congress for around 500 people and among the speakers were 4 CEO’s of the biggest companies in the world. The best thing about this experience was that after the congress we casually had a beer with all of them - as you can see in the picture. Right now I am looking forward to two big projects. Firstly the EFR Business Week, right now the University has totally transformed and everywhere I look I see the EFR Business Week. In 5 weeks we will welcome many prominent guests to this university. Secondly, the EFR verkiezingsdebat will be held, which will be broadcasted live on television. Who would have guessed that a 21-year-old has the ultimate responsibility for this project?”

support and personal development You will not do your fulltime year by yourself. Throughout the entire year, you will be surrounded by people that are always ready to help you.

supervisory board

All fulltime committees are supported by a supervisory board. The supervisory board helps when needed. They are all former committee or board members and have a lot of experience.

personal coaching programme

Being a board member can be quite demanding and it is hard to be consciously busy with your personal development plan. Therefore, the EFR board members get the opportunity to have a personal coach. This coach will assist and advise you on your personal development.

financial support

Being in a fulltime committee means you cannot study for a year and you might not have enough time for a sidejob. However, the university and the EFR support initiatives like a fulltime year and therefore provide you with compensations. For more detailed information, you can always email vicepresident@efr.nl
