foreword Prof. Dr. Huibert Pols - Rector Magnificus

Being a student at the Erasmus University is more than studying books in order to prepare for the next exam. Participating in one of the study associations is a valued component in the academic education of a student. It is an excellent way to gain useful experience in many aspects of life, which students can use immediately as a student and later on in their professional career. The Economic Faculty association Rotterdam organises many successful and innovative events, which are highly appreciated within the university, such as the EFR Business Week, the televised election debate on EenVandaag and the Erasmus Recruitment Days. The board members of the EFR put their studies on hold to dedicate themselves to managing the association. This is something I greatly admire, particularly given the tremendous contribution EFR makes to university life. As rector magnificus I strongly support them in the organisation of their events.

the EFR With over 6000 members, the EFR is one of the most active and most professional study associations of the Netherlands. EFR’s portfolio is large and diverse. It ranges from organising smaller events to help students orientate to large recruitment events. From small interactive speaker sessions to the largest of congresses and debates. From a skills week for students, to personal development for over 180 committee members. And, from drinking with your friends in the Stoep to shaking hands with leaders from the business or political world. Our activities prepare students for the job market, bring them into contact with their future employer and enhance their student experience. In short: we bridge the gap between theory and practice.

EFR board year in short Pausing your studies and dedicating a year to a board might seem a little odd. However, during such a year, you gain practical experience which you will not be able to get in class. Working fulltime on a project results in discovering all aspects of a project; from brainstorming to marketing and logistics. Furthermore, you will not be going fulltime alone, but with a team of equally motivated and ambitious people. You will share all the milestones and setbacks, therefore you will develop a very strong friendship!

Who are we looking for? enthousiastic, ready to take initiative persistent solution oriented, not afraid to take a risk responsible, capable and willing to carry the ultimate responsibility social

some testimonials As it is hard to explain the whole board year experience, you will find testimonials and pictures of current board members and the highlights of their year on the following pages. Because a board year is so much more than only position related business, we firstly want to give you a little insight in the life of the board members by these testimonials and pictures.

Sebastiaan Frommé President 2016-2017

“This year started with a crazy champagne drink where I got to meet my 7 fellow board members with whom I would spend the largest part of the upcoming year. So far, this year has had so many highlights! For example during the EFR/EenVandaag Erasmus debate I was the personal assistant of Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, I got to spend quite some time with him during his time at the university. I even got the chance to take a selfie with him while he was here! Besides the Erasmus debate we also organised the sustainability summit “Transform your World” and of course the EFR Business Week. It is amazing how many prominent speakers come to the university for an EFR event!”

Anna Haffmans IT Officer & Secretary 2016-2017

“Three years ago, in a long overnight journey to London, two board members at the time unknowingly convinced me to become an EFR board member. And that was that. I applied and immediately got swept away in an overload of EFR. At the moment, I am half way through my year as a board member and it has been an incredible journey. From negotiating contracts to critically looking at the design of the new website and from drinking with old board members to going to the WU ball in Vienna with the board, this year has been more than I could have wished for. Besides from having fun, a board year at EFR creates the perfect environment to develop yourself, to make mistakes and to learn from them. Above all, I now have 7 best friends with whom I got to go through it all, my fellow board members!

Gerwin Janssen Treasurer 2016-2017

“I’m responsible to check every euro going in and out of the EFR. This is a great challenge since it means that you also carry the final responsibility for all revenue and expendutures. The fun part is that the decision of where to spend money on is yours. This decision making process involves a lot of communication. I have to be aware of everyone’s opinion in order to make well balanced decisions. At times, when people don’t agree with you, you have to be able to back up your choices with logical arguments. On the other hand, as soon as you mention that there is extra budget for something people love you for it. Being treasurer means that I play a part in the organisation of each event, which gives great insights in the impressive scale and scope of EFR events. I guess it will be years before I have a position within a business where I am allowed to handle the same level of responsibility as I do now, in the EFR board.”

Shila Kobakiwal Marketing Officer 2016-2017

“This year I have worked on so many cool projects and experienced a lot of amazing things, which really made this year the best year of my life. One of my most important projects was finalising the new EFR corporate identity. How cool is it to brainstorm about this with the design company and in the end decide on the new look of the EFR for the upcoming years? However, the biggest branding accomplishment of the EFR this year was having the EFR logo on (inter)national television - with the CNN as the biggest surprise - during the press conference of Mark Rutte at the university. Besides all the position related stuff, I just had an amazing year with my fellow board members. We experienced a lot of cool things together like “de wisselingsweek”, joining the EFR Ski Trip, being invited to the ball in Vienna, all the weekends away, EFR drinks and so much more!”

Cyriel Hakkers Project Manager General 2016-2017

“I was asked to write down my experiences of this board year in 200 words, a whole challenge, but isn’t that what this board is all about? It all started on the day when I met 7 random people who became my best friends during my board year. With this group you will organise so many cool events. For me the best event till now was Transform your World, a congress for around 500 people and among the speakers were 4 CEOs of the biggest companies in the world. The best thing about this experience was that after the congress we casually had a beer with all of them. Right now we are in the middle of the EFR Business Week, the university is totally transformed and everywhere I look I see the EFR Business Week. Secondly, the EFR Verkiezingsdebat was held and was broadcasted live on television, who would have guessed that a 21 year old has the ultimate responsibility for this project?”

Emma Clemens Vice President 2016-2017

“This year has been more than I ever expected, in all ways. My personal development has been bigger than I expected, the intensity of the year has been more than expected and mostly the friendships that developed has been way more than I expected. In 20 years, I expect to still be going on vacation together and having fun! We have done so much this year, from organising a huge debate with Wilders, Rutte and more than a hundred different international journalists, to the sustainability summit: Transform your World with 4 CEO’s and 100 NGO’s, students and companies. Also working on projects with a legacy such as the EFR summaries and the EFR board positions for the next board has been thrilling. A board year is a year in which you will learn so much, it is the perfect environment to make mistakes and to do things you find scary at first glance.”

Roger van den Oord Project Manager Career 2016-2017

“Being a project manager is always exciting because you work with so many committee members - really, ask Cyriel! I had the pleasure to work with very ambitious committee members and it energises me to enable their full potential. Next to committee members, I worked with a lot of different parties: companies, professors, NGO’s and other study associations. The variation in my function made the year a real challenge and there never was a day that I did not learn something new. By now the Erasmus Recruitment Days have passed and it was again a huge success! It is a rollercoaster full of early mornings, hard work, coffee and of course companies and students. Supervising this full time committee was full of learning moments and one of the most exciting things of my position. Next to learning professional skills, you can learn a lot more during a board year. Before the EFR Ski Trip I never skied, and by now I can say that skiing is one of the things I love most. Right now I’m looking forward to three weeks in Uganda for the EFR Involve Research Project, another project that I had the pleasure of supervising this year.”

Maarten Weekenborg Commercial Officer 2016-2017

“My board year is a real rollercoaster. The beginning of the year was hectic because I wanted to visit a ton of partners. Then the academic year began and the ERD and Business Week commercials kicked off. We had a lot of meetings, I gave (un)wanted advice and many deals later, they all had a tremendous result. After the acquisition ended, I shifted my focus to expanding the Erasmus Recruitment Platform. This effort taught me a lot about sales. Now, after the ERD and right before the EFR Business Week my focus goes to long term strategy of various topics. I love that the EFR has such a diverse and large portfolio that enables all board members to keep learning and developing on a whole range of events and tasks. However, I have not mentioned the best parts of a board year at EFR, the whole group of committee members and fellow board members. I didn’t have all those experiences alone, it was with a real close group of friends. I particularly liked the intensive contact with my committees, the commercials in other committees and the whole community of committee members.”

coolest year of your life!

During all the serious business, you will also just do a lot of very cool stuff: from meeting the prime-minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, to going to a dinner with all former EFR board members. The year is full of unique and fun events - it will be a year you will never forget!

friends for life with your team

You will experience all the ups and downs in a year with a small and close group of people. Together with your board, you will be working a lot on a professional level but perhaps even more on a social level. You will most likely see each other more than your partner, housemates, clubmates or parents. This will create a bond that lasts a lifetime!

with the committee members

As an EFR board member, you will belong to the inner circle of the EFR community. Together with the EFR’s tight committee member network, you will join the parties, weekends away, Committee Members Prom and drinks. This results in a broad network that can be very useful for the organisation of your event(s).

with former board members

Many former boards still see each other on a regular basis. The EFR’s Alumni Organisation hosts some of these reunions in the form of a former board dinner and the alumni day. As a board member you get to know a lot of old board members who help you in many ways and with whom you can have great parties!

personal, social and professional development personal

social

Learning to handle big responsibilities, giving effective feedback, receiving criticism and making decisions constrained by a tight schedule, are important skills that are not easily learned in a classroom. You might have had a time management training, or have read something about giving feedback but it is only after you have done it yourself, that you will begin to understand the fine nuances of these soft skills. A fulltime year provides a constant environment to practice and develop these very valuable skills. Also, for EFR board members there are personal coaches at your provision who will assist and advise you on your personal development.

As you will be working together closely with a lot of people, your social skills will develop as well. Managing expectations and communicating appropriately are skills you can only learn by doing. You might have to negotiate a contract or give feedback to your fellow board or committee members.

“During your fulltime year, you will be able to discover and develop new capabilities.

professional

As a fulltimer, you will improve your personal skills enormously. However, you will also improve your professional skills. You will learn how to use your time efficiently, negotiate contracts and network. Furthermore, you get the chance to arrange trainings for soft skills like time management or leadership, or hard skills like inDesign or Salesforce.

network: students, alumni and professionals students

professional

As a fulltimer, you will be at the beating heart of the EFR’s community. You will be at almost every event and thus know all the people in the association – and they will know you!

As a fulltimer, you are constantly in contact with professionals from a wide selection of national and international companies. Every board member interacts not only with people from the corporate world, but also with other important people ranging from princess Laurentien to the Ambassador of France in the Netherlands.

alumni

The EFR maintains a tightly knit network of former committee and board members. This network dates back to 1964, the EFR’s year of birth. As a fulltimer, you will soon notice that your predecessors are (still) very involved with the EFR’s activities. They are always willing to advice on specific projects, or answer more personal questions about your development or future career choices.

support and personal development You will not do your fulltime year by yourself. Throughout the entire year, you will be surrounded by people that are always ready to help you.

supervisory board

All board members are supported by a supervisory board. The supervisory board helps when needed. They are all former board members and have a lot of experience.

personal coaching programme

Being a board member can be quite demanding and it is hard to be consciously busy with your personal development plan. Therefore, the EFR board members get the opportunity to have a personal coach. This coach will assist and advise you on your personal development.

financial support

Being a board member means you cannot study for a year and you might not have enough time for a sidejob. However, the university and the EFR support initiatives like a fulltime year and therefore provide you with compensations. For more detailed information, you can always email vicepresident@efr.nl

some words from recruiters “A fulltime committee is very interesting for your own development as well from a recruitment perspective. First of all you learn a lot from ‘real-life’ situations; during your studies you deal with very controlled problems together with similar people. But you actually start learning when you work in a different team dynamics in a ‘real-world’ environment. From that perspective you develop yourself on social level and that is something I personally really like. Besides that, there are so many other things you can learn from a fulltime committee; you learn to multitask, to set priorities, to communicate, to work together, to broaden your network and last but not least, you are willing to be involved in something else besides your studies and you are willing to work for it. These are all elements you will be confronted with during a future job, so how nice would it be if you can already taste a bit of that right now? Of course it is very fun as well to do a committee! So as a Campus Recruiter I would strongly advise you to do a full-time committee! Good luck! :)” Jessie de Groot, IT Campus Recruiter ING

“Being in a fulltime committee or board is not only an addition to your CV. You will also strengthen a lot of other competences. For example you will learn how to work in a team, you will have to reflect on your own acts and you will increase your leadership qualities. As the Recruitment Advisor I am responsible for the recruitment and selection of starters in the consultancy brance of KPMG. Therefore, I can certainly say that students with fulltime committee- or boardexperience have developed themselves strongly on the above mentioned points. I would really recommend you to apply for a fulltime position. It does not only add a lot to your personal development, but besides that it is also a really cool experience! Joost Brunninkhuis, Recruitment Advisor KPMG

positions and modules This year, there will be a change in constitution of the EFR Board. The 54th board will work with a so-called “modular structure”. This means that approximately 80% of your position is fixed and 20% consists of modules. A module is a task that is not yet appointed to a specific board position and to which you can apply regardless of the board positions you are applying for. Not every position has the same amount of modular space. The amount of modular space is indicated below every position description with the amount of stars. These stars correspond with the workload. Together with your predecessor you will make a ‘summer round’ in which you will be introduced, the past collaboration is evaluated and the new options are discussed.
