Dear student, One of the advantages of studying at the ESE is that our school has a large and broad faculty. This allows us to offer you a wide range of specialisations in your third bachelor year after you have done the basic courses.

The other side of the coin is that this variety comes with a lot of choices that you have to make: minors, majors, electives, foreign exchange or not, the subject of the bachelor thesis. All these choices have implications for the continuation of your studies as well as for the path that you are following towards a professional career.

This brochure, a co-production of the EFR and the ESE, is meant to clarify the structure of bachelor 3 and guide you through the various challenging possibilities. I hope that this guide will prove to be of great help in finding your way through this stage of the bachelor.

02 Bachelor 3 in a nutshell Block 1

Block 3 and 4

A minor is a combination of courses that is meant to be a valuable addition to the regular curriculum of your studies. You can use it to broaden your knowledge in a new area or to gain deeper knowledge in the field of economics. You can also go abroad during the first 2 blocks or take an internship in either block 1 or 2.

A major is the specialisation of your bachelor’s programme. It can help you to prepare for your bachelor thesis and your master’s programme.

It consists of 3 major courses and a seminar. The major courses take place during block 3 and the seminars take place during block 4.

Minors:

Block 2

Electives: Electives are courses which you can choose freely within the ESE or at other faculties. Most of the ESE elective courses are offered in block 2. Some major courses are also offered in block 2 already.

Bachelor Thesis: The thesis is an individual assignment related to your bachelor’s programme. It is the final challenge for obtaining your bachelor’s degree. Next to writing your thesis, you also have to follow the course Philosophy of Economics.

Deadlines

Unless you go abroad or do an internship, you are obliged to follow a minor during the first block of bachelor 3. An internship can also be done in block 2; more information about this can be found on page 9. A minor is a coherent combination of courses and can be used to broaden or deepen your knowledge gained in previous years. Minors can be attended at the ESE, but also at other faculties and even at other universities.

IMPORTANT pA n overview of the EUR-minors suitable for ESEstudents can be found on www.eur.nl/minor p I nformation about following a minor at another Dutch university can be found through the following link: www.eur.nl/english/minor/ minors/minor_outside_eur p I f you fail to register for a minor you will delay your studies, since minors are a compulsory part of your bachelor. pM inors at the ESE can be taken for 12 credits.

Minors at other faculties of the EUR are 15 credits and take longer to finish. They usually continue until week 2-3 in block 2, including exams! pE xemption: Dutch HBO bachelor degree; BSc or MSc from another university. Exemptions have to be requested via the Examination Board.

You apply for your minor in the second year of your bachelor. The application procedure will be communicated to you via e-mail and/or SIN-Online.

Introduction In block 2 you can take electives to gain insight in some specific fields of economics. The available electives can be found in the SIN-Online course guide, see link below. Besides these, you can bring in additional major courses as electives.

The available major courses can be found in the chapter about majors starting on page 11. Another option in the second block is doing an internship instead of your electives. For more information on doing an internship, see next page.

When planning your second block you have to take into account the amount of credits gained in your minor. If you took a 12 credit minor you should take 3 electives of 4 credits each to stay on track. If you chose a 15 credit minor it suffices to take 2 electives of 4 credits each and the course Communication skills/Communicatieve vaardigheden (1 credit) in block 2/3. If you followed courses at another university or faculty, you can request the Examination Board to incorporate these courses into your elective space at the ESE. Some major courses are also offered block 2.

p You have to check whether the courses you choose have tutorials and if you need to register for them, this information can be found in the course guide on SIN-Online. p You need to look at the time table to check if your lectures and exams do not overlap with other courses. If you have overlapping courses you should choose your courses differently.

Beware that it is your own responsibility to check this. p You should check if the courses you choose are meant for bachelor students, since you are not allowed to take master courses

p Arranging an internship and an internship supervisor is your own responsibility. p There are some requirements for your internship. You can find the requirements on the website of the ESE: www.ese.eur.nl/internship p Internships do not require a work permit.

Students from non-EEA countries are obliged to have a ‘Nuffic Dutch student – Trainee Agreement’. For more information you can visit the Nuffic website: www.nuffic.nl/bestanden/ documenten/toelating-verblijf/werk/stage/ cospa-trainee-agreement-english.doc/view p An internship cannot be combined with following other courses because an internship is fulltime.

If you still have to complete bachelor 2 courses during the internship period, these courses should have absolute priority and you should better not start an internship. p Students of Econometrics and Operational Research can only do an internship during block 1 and they should have completed the Econometrics and Operational Research Basic Seminar of bachelor 2. p If you want to do an internship in block 1, you probably have to start looking for it before the summer. Because of the summer holidays it will be more difficult to find an internship company and a supervising lecturer during summer time.

Internship Introduction

You can do an internship instead of a minor (block 1) or in your free elective space (block 2). An internship takes eight weeks. An internship needs to have an academic approach and academic content. You may also combine an internship with writing your thesis. However, in that case you will not receive separate credits for your internship and the internship will not be listed on your academic transcript. An internship has a maximum of 12 credits.

do an internship you should start searching for it as soon as possible. You also need to find a coordinator and create a proposal. Therefore, it is crucial to start in time.

Studying abroad If you plan to go on exchange you need to obtain 24 credits during the exchange to avoid delay in your studies. The application for an exchange starts early on in year 2 of your studies. If you go on exchange you do not need to do a minor.

After your exchange you will have to transfer the courses done during your exchange as electives by submitting a form to the Examination Board.

04 block 3 and 4 Major

Introduction The major is the specialisation of your bachelor and consists of courses that give you deeper understanding of a specific field of economics.

The majors you can take correspond with the master programmes offered at the ESE and they can help you preparing for them. However, it is not necessary to follow a specific major to get into that master. The major consists of 3 courses of 4 credits each and a 12 credit seminar. Seminars involve a lot of assignments and presentations.

Some majors offer a choice of courses, in others the programme is fixed. You have to complete one full major, however you subscribe for all individual courses and the seminar separately.

Important for all students pA part of the major courses is compulsory and a part of them can be freely chosen. An overview of the compulsory and elective major courses can be found in the tables on the next pages. pM ore information about the content of major courses and major seminars can be found in the course guide on SIN-Online. pS eminars are in block 4, attendance in every seminar session is compulsory. pY ou have to enrol for the major courses via SINOnline. p To apply for a seminar, you must have completed your bachelor 1 and bachelor 2. Application for seminars is centrally and more information can be found on the website below.

p All major courses and the seminar must be chosen from the same major. p In the tables on the next pages sometimes two course codes or names are indicated for a certain course. In this case the course is offered both in Dutch and in English. The first code or name is always for the Dutch course and the second for the English course.

Important for IBEB students The majors for IBEB correspond with those for Economie en Bedrijfseconomie. However, IBEB students are not allowed to take major courses and seminars in Dutch from the Economie en Bedrijfseconomie programme as part of their major. Therefore in some majors certain courses are obligatory for IBEB students while they are not obligatory for Economie en Bedrijfseconomie students. This is indicated in the tables on the next pages.

05 Block 3, 4 ,5 Thesis and Philosophy of Economics

In block 5, you should follow the course Philosophy of economics (4 cr) and write your bachelor thesis.

Bachelor thesis the bachelor thesis is a final, individual assignment you have to complete in order to obtain the bachelor’s degree. after 3 years of education at the ese, your thesis will be the crown on your bachelor’s programme. Writing a thesis also provides you insight in the essence of academic research. the bachelor thesis can be written on any subject related to your studies; often it is done in combination with a major seminar. Writing a thesis requires certain self-discipline and planning skills. the thesis itself consumes a lot of time, therefore it is wise not to underestimate the thesis process. It requires you to find a supervisor, set up a research question and organise your writing process. next to your thesis you will also follow the course ‘Filosofie van de economie’ (FeB12002) or ‘Philosophy of economics’ (FeB12002X) for IBeB during block 5. the thesis needs to comply with a specific set of requirements, which you can find on the ese website: www.ese.eur.nl/students/thesis

important p It is not recommended to write the bachelor thesis in combination with an internship. this might cause delay. For the master thesis this is different. p you can only start with writing your thesis if you have finished bachelor 1 and bachelor 2.

p the thesis timelines for all the departments are different so you should check this with the department of your supervisor. you can find the details for the different departments on the thesis website. p It is wise to start planning your thesis before the start of block 5. For example you can already think about the subject and find a supervisor. p the grade of bachelor thesis should be booked in Osiris before 1 august 2013 if you want to start you master in the academic year 2013-2014. required prior knowledge to become a register accountant (ra) or register controller (rc) – only for economie en bedrijfseconomie this information is specifically for students that want to pursue the ra or rC title. the requirements of prior knowledge mentioned below are external requirements: if these are not met, graduates with a post-initial degree from erasmus university rotterdam will not be automatically recognised as ra or rC by the professional organization (nIvra or vrC). this means that students who want to do the post-initial education to become an ra or rC are strongly advised to meet these requirements in advance.

When students meet these bachelor-3 requirements and they also do the Msc accounting, auditing and Control, followed by the post-initial education, there will be no problems with regard to the recognition by the professional organisations. Please note that these courses are not required to start in the master programme accounting, auditing and Control.

Bachelor 3 in preparation for RA or RC

Bachelor Degree

To become an RA or RC without deficiencies, students have to complete the major Financial Accounting (RA) or the major Management Accounting (RC). They also have to complete the minor ‘Ondernemen en Belastingen’ as well as to fill in their ‘free’ elective space with certain bachelor 3 courses. The following scheme is applicable:

Congratulations! If you managed to get all 180 ECTS of your bachelor’s programme you finally get your bachelor’s degree. In order to actually obtain your degree you will need to make a request for it.

You can request a grade list at the Department for Exam Administration in room EB - 41. If they have checked and approved that you indeed received all necessary credits you can proceed to request your degree. To do this you have to be registered as a bachelor student. This means you have to request your diploma before 31 August. If you do not request your diploma before this date, you have to re-enrol as a bachelor student in Studielink for the next academic year. You can choose to either pick up your diploma at the Exam Administration or receive it at the Bachelor Graduation Day. For more information about the latter, see below.

* Students who have followed FEB11013 ICT as an obligatory course in their curriculum are not obliged to take FEB33004 Enterprise Information System. Instead they can choose a free elective.

Your grades Your transcript of records will show all passed courses and obtained grades, including all compensated courses. All grades are noted with one decimal. Please notice that insufficient, but compensated grades will also be shown on your academic transcript. If applicable, your judicium (classification) will also be noted on your transcript of records. The judicium is calculated using the weighted average grades of the final results for all exam subjects. Beware, for courses of which the first valid grade is obtained as from 1 September 2011 this first valid grade is taken into account while establishing the judicium.

There are two judicia: p Cum Laude: The weighted average of first obtained valid grades is at least 8.25 and the thesis is graded at least 8.0 p Summa Cum Laude: The weighted average of first obtained valid grades is at least 9.0 and the thesis is graded at least 9.0

Application for master It is important to know that you can only apply for a master when you have completed your full bachelor, which means all courses and your thesis. The application deadline for a master is 1 August 2013, therefore it is important to finish your thesis in time. This means you have to make appointments with your supervisor taking into account that he/she might be on vacation during the summer period.

Bachelor Graduation Day The ESE invites their bachelor graduates to the Graduation Day, a festive ceremony to celebrate the obtaining of your bachelor’s degree. The ‘Graduation Day’ is held in October or November and besides the individual receiving of one’s degree, the programme will contain interesting guest speakers, as well as the election of the ‘Lecturers of the Year’. All you need to do, apart from requesting your degree as explained above, is to register for the ‘Graduation Day’ at the ESE Examination Administration Office in room EB-41. Frequently asked questions Block 1 Which do I choose: a Minor, an internship or studying abroad? Which of the three will be more value adding?

It really depends on the experience that you would like to have. If you would like to broaden your international experience, then you should definitely go on exchange. However, if you would like to take a broadening subject of your interest, you should stay in the Netherlands. If you want to gain practical experience, you can choose the internship.

About minors: How do I choose the right minor?

How do I register? When do I know the result of my registration?

It really depends on where your interests lie and what extra subject you would like to tackle. Minors are handled centrally. Find out how to register on www.eur.nl/minor. After approximately one month you will receive the result of your registration.

I am an IBEB student. Am I allowed to take courses in Dutch?

Yes, all IBEB students are allowed to take their minor and electives in Dutch as well as in English.

The major courses, major seminar and thesis should all be in English.

Block 2 I will be on exchange during block 1 and 2. How can I register for block 3?

You can register for the major courses via SIN-Online. Most major courses do not have (obligatory) tutorials, so you only need to subscribe yourself to the channel. However, you should check for the tutorials yourself.

Can I take electives at other faculties or universities?

Yes, you are allowed to take electives at other faculties or universities. After taking these courses, you will need to ask the Examination Board for permission to bring them into your elective space. See www.ese.eur.nl/ examinationboard for more information. Please notice that other faculties and universities might have a different academic calendar, so you might encounter problems in your study planning.

Block 3 Which major do I choose if I like two majors at the same time? Can I follow two majors at the same time? Can I follow two seminars?

You can follow the major that you like the best and then take courses from the other major as electives. This way you cover both your favourite subjects. As for the seminars, you are not allowed to follow two seminars a year.

I will be on exchange during block 1 and 2. I will return late during block 3, what should I do?

Please contact a study adviser to discuss your study planning in advance. You might be able to catch up on the major courses with self-study or during the resits. bachelorGuide year three 29

When and how should I register for the major seminar?

You can register for the seminar at the beginning of block 3. You will need to fill in a form, provided by the ESE on the website. You will receive more information about the registration procedure via SIN-Online in January.

I do not fulfil the requirements for the bachelor seminar. What should I do?

If you almost meet the requirements, you can write a request for dispensation from the requirements. Add this request to your registration form. The Examination Board will decide if you can be admitted to a seminar after all. You can always approach a study adviser for information about dispensation.

Block 4 Should I choose a master’s specialisation that corresponds to my major?

No, you can still choose from all specialisations within the MSc Economics and Business and Msc Accounting, Auditing and Control after graduating. Still, a major specialisation is often a good preparation for your master’s. For the MSc programmes Accounting, Auditing and Control, Accounting and Finance and Financial Economics, we strongly advise you to prepare well by doing the corresponding major.

Block 5 Can I write my thesis in cooperation with another student?

No, all students should write a thesis individually.

Which thesis subject should I choose?

First, you should think about the subject that intrigued you the most during your studies. Then, you should think about a topic that was either of great interest to you and/or a topic about which not a lot of research has been done yet.

How do I find a supervisor? Can it only be a professor at the School of Economics?

Your supervisor should be a professor from the Erasmus School of Economics. On the thesis website you can find when and how you can approach a professor: www.ese.eur.nl/students/thesis How do I continue studying and apply for an ESE Master’s programme?

The Erasmus School of Economics offers 4 master programmes within a total of 14 specialisations in the field of Economics and Business, Econometrics and Management Science and Economics and Informatics. For the admission to the ESE master’s programme you need to have obtained your bachelor’s degree. The deadline for the application for the master’s programme is 1 Augustus 2013.
