Dear StuDeNt, as a second-year student of the erasmus School of economics you can create your own path. you are starting to find out what interests you most and what truly motivates you. at the same time, this is a year in which you can make choices that will influence the continuation of your studies. Do you want to follow a minor next year or go on a foreign exchange? and which major and electives are in line with your preferences?

the economic Faculty association rotterdam (eFr) has prepared this guide to provide you with a helping hand in this phase of your studies. In order to make a choice that fits you best, this guide provides you with an overview of the different options available.

02 preparation second Year Preparation for the new academic year

During the summer holidays, students must arrange their registration for the coming academic year.

Studielink you have to register yourself for the second year of your programme at Studielink. this is called re-enrollment (herinschrijving). you can start the registration for bachelor 2 in June, but you can only finalise it when you have received your final positive BSa. your re-enrollment has to be approved by the university before the first of September. Notice that a delayed subscription or payment of the tuition fee will have negative consequences for your right on study financing and free public transport.

Moreover, you will be blocked in all eur systems.

Course Registration In order to register for courses, log in to SINonline and go to ‘subscribe’. once on this page, add the required courses and save changes. you can find the relevant courses for Bachelor 2 in the study schedules under information for bachelor students on the eSe website. Make sure you have subscribed for your courses and tutorials at least one week before the start of the first block, otherwise you will be too late to subscribe for your tutorials. this means you will not be able to participate in your final exam for the particular course.

Tutorial Registration

and ends on the Sunday five working days before the start of the new block. you can register for tutorials in SIN-online under ‘My registrations’. on this page you can subscribe for your preferred tutorial group. after registration you will receive a confirmation e-mail and you will be able to see the new schedule in your timetable. In case all tutorial groups are full, you should notify the Information Desk of the eSC in H6-02 before the end of the registration period. If you follow a course again you should subscribe for the special tutorial group for recidivists (rCDV group). you are a recidivist if you meet the following requirements: p you have met the attendance requirements in a former academic year p you have obtained a valid, though insufficient result for an exam made in the former academic year. a valid result is always registered in osiris.

If you do not meet these requirements you need to register for a normal tutorial group.

If you do not register on time for a tutorial group, for a bachelor 1 or bachelor 2 course, you can register at the Information Desk of the eSC (H6-02) against a payment of €25 per tutorial.

NoTe: a registration at the eSC does not imply that you will still be able to meet the attendance requirements of the course.

03 block 1 Examination Subscription

Master Open Days

In bachelor 2 you have to subscribe for examinations in Osiris, just like in bachelor 1. The procedure for examination registration is the same as before. The registration period for exams starts 5 weeks before the exam and ends 7 days before the exam. In the event of late registration, you can register until 2 working days prior to the day on which the examination is held, against a payment of â‚Ź13.50 in administrative charges per examination at the desk of the Erasmus Student Service Centre (E-building). If you take part in an examination without registration, the result of the relevant examination can still be registered in OSIRIS, but only against payment of â‚Ź 50.- in administrative charges via the Information Desk (H06-02). This registration can only be made and paid for two days before the exam until and including the same day you took that examination.

If the examination ends after opening hours of the Information Desk, registration will be accepted the day after. This service is available at the Information Desk during opening hours. If you wish to acquire this service through the ESE Webshop then this must be done no later than midnight of the same day that the service was available at the Information Desk.

Orientation Cycle In collaboration with the Erasmus School of Economics and the master study assocations Eureos, FSR, Maeur and Transito the EFR organises the Orientation Cycle. This cycle consists of five different Orientation Days and provides you with the opportunity to explore different fields of expertise in practice. The Orientation Cycle covers most of the ESE masters with days for Finance, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Accounting and Port Economics. You can visit all these events separately. Find out in which direction you want to go with your major or master by attending the Orientation Cycle.

04 block 2 Preparation for block 1 & 2 of bachelor 3 In your second year you need to prepare and make plans for the first two blocks of your third year. In these blocks you have to obtain 24 credits (ECTS), but you can choose yourself how to obtain them.

You have the following options: p Go on exchange and obtain the credits abroad p Do a minor at the ESE in the first block and choose electives in the second block p Do a minor at another faculty at the EUR or another university in the Netherlands and choose electives in the second block p Do an internship instead of your minor or your electives If you want to do an internship or study abroad you should already start preparing in the second block of your second Bachelor year.

Studying Abroad In order to be able to apply for the ESE exchange programme you should meet the following criteria: p You need to be enrolled as a fulltime student at the Erasmus School of Economics p You should have obtained at least 20 credits from your second bachelor’s year upon application p You need to meet the language requirements of the partner university (if applicable)

p In principle you should have achieved an average grade of at least a 7.0 of your academic record to apply for universities outside of the European Union p You need to be highly motivated Deadline both for exchange inside and outside of Europe: 20 January 2014 More information about studying abroad, the selection procedure and preparations can be found in the ESE exchange leaflet: The exchange leaflet can be found on the ESE website under information for bachelor 3 students studying abroad and at the ESE website: www.ese.eur.nl/studyingabroad Of course you should decide yourself whether you want to study abroad or not. You probably have plenty of reasons either why you do want to study or you do not want to study abroad. However, in your decision-making you could take the considerations on the next page into account.

Why go on exchange? p Studying abroad is an amazing once in a lifetime experience! p you will learn new skills, become more independent, and experience a high personal development. p International perspectives broaden your horizon. p It is a good opportunity to travel, meet new people, and get to know new cultures. p an experience abroad and outside of your comfort-zone is highly valued by recruiters when hiring new employees. p Going on exchange is a very good opportunity to really broaden your knowledge. Partner universities usually offer different courses than the eSe and you can take any course you want during your exchange.

What to take into consideration? p when you are abroad you cannot retake failed courses from your second year. also, you cannot apply for a seminar as long as you did not pass all of your first and second year courses. So if you have one unfinished second year course which is lectured during one of the first two blocks you cannot start your major when you return from your exchange. In this case you will suffer a year of study delay when going on exchange. p Semesters abroad, in particular outside of europe, do not always match the block system of the eSe. therefore it could happen that your semester abroad finishes at the end of January, 14 bachelorGuide year two

and consequently you will miss the beginning of your third block (major) at eSe. However some universities offer the possibility to take final exams prematurely to avoid this problem. p Studying abroad can be more costly than studying in rotterdam. p you do not have to pay the tuition fee at the partner university; you pay your regular fee at the eur. p you do have to take into account the cost of housing, which is a big expenditure. However if you already live on your own, you will not face high additional costs. Moreover there are several organisations that help you with housing swaps, like Housing anywhere. p there are possibilities to receive financial support as the erasmus Scholarship, the eSe Scholarship and others. you can find more information on the eSe website.

In the end going on exchange requires more effort, preparation and money than doing a minor. However, these incurred costs are nothing compared to the amazing experience you will have abroad. It is definitely recommended to go on exchange, since it is a very valuable contribution to your curriculum here at the eSe.

Minor a minor is an opportunity for third year bachelor students to broaden or deepen their knowledge about certain subjects. It takes place in the first block of your third year and is worth 12 (at eSe) to 15 (at other faculties) credits. the following minors

are available at the eSe during the academic year 2013-2014. Why take a minor?

Internship

p Minors are a great opportunity to deepen your knowledge p While doing a minor you have the possibility to retake and improve courses from your bachelor 1 &2 p There is no need to move or organise anything yourself, except for subscribing for the minor of your choice p Minors do not require any lengthy procedures to apply. They work just like subscriptions for normal courses

ESE offers the opportunity to do an internship in the third year of your bachelor’s programme.

Internships can be followed as an alternative to the minor (block 1) or electives (block 2).

Internships last for eight weeks and are equivalent to 12 credits (336 hours).

What to take into consideration?

You can take a minor at ESE, another faculty at the EUR or another university in the Netherlands, however you will not get the experience of traveling and studying abroad.

It is the student’s responsibility to find an internship placement and internship supervisor. It is therefore wise to start your search for a suitable internship during your second year. Please note that the internship must have sufficient scientific quality. It must also be in a field relevant to your studies, and contribute to answering research questions that you must come up with before the start of the internship.

Once you have found an internship and a

research topic, you must write a proposal. This proposal must be approved by an ESE lecturer who is prepared to supervise you during the internship. The internship proposal has to be approximately two A4 sheets long and has to contain a description of the research questions, required work, and the internship supervision that the company offers. The internship proposal has to be supported by the internship company and must contain the contact details of the company’s internship supervisor.

assessed by your supervisor as adequate or not.

If adequate, the supervisor will sign the report and send it to the Exam Administration, who will process the credits.

It would be a good idea to verify your internship plans with a study adviser.

Why do an internship? p You acquire work experience and learn to work in and function in real life situations p You will meet new people that could possibly help you in the future (e.g. job offer) p You could do an internship abroad

What to take into consideration? p When doing an internship students are expected to have normal working hours 5 days a week p Finding and planning an internship is your own responsibility It is possible to contact a study adviser to help you create a suitable study plan for your third bachelor year.

Requirements Major

each year eSe accepts students from all over the world for the IBeB programme. you can become an iBuddy to help the newcomers, provide them with correct information, guide them to the right parties, introduce them to all social activities and enhance and develop the international network of the eSe. application for this programme starts in april, go to www.efr.nl/ibuddy for more information.

In your third bachelor year you have to take a major. a major consists of three major courses (3x4 ects) and a seminar (12 ects) you have to register for your major in your third bachelor year.

Most major courses are offered in block 3, but some are already offered in block 2. In block 2 you can also choose electives. More information about all of this can be found in the Bachelor 3 Guide.

However, do take into account that you have to meet the following criteria in order to apply for a major seminar: p Courses in bachelor 1 and bachelor 2 completed after block 2 of bachelor 3. Both passed and compensated courses are taken into account. Courses followed in block 3 (directly before the seminar) cannot be taken into account in the entrance requirements.

Student Assistant eSe is always looking for student assistants. If you want to become a student assistant you can apply for a job towards the end of each academic year.

More information about this can be found on the SIN-online channel “eSe Vacatures voor studentassistenten”. Being a student assistant has many advantages, including getting paid and acquiring work experience.

Ambassador ambassadors are students who provide information about their study programme to prospective students. every year 40 ambassadors of different studies are active within eSe. you will represent eSe at numerous extension activities and study fairs, both at the eur and at different locations throughout the country. you can apply for the ambassadorship by filling in the registration form on www.eur.nl/eao.

Committees there are a lot of possibilities to develop yourself within committees. By organising activities for your fellow students you will develop skills as planning, working together in a team and networking. these skills are very valuable in your future career. to learn more about committees at the eFr go to www.efr.nl
