85 JANUARY 2024 3 JULY 2023 JANUARY 2026 Message from the Headmaster Welcome back to all our pupils, staff, and families.

It is wonderful to see the school once again full of energy and purpose. Although the weather is decidedly wintry, our grounds and facilities team have worked tirelessly to ensure safe access for everyone. Despite the cold conditions, our pupils have returned with admirable focus and determination. Years 9 and 10 have approached their exams with diligence and maturity, setting a strong tone for the term ahead. Year 11 are preparing for the start of their mock examinations next week, and it is encouraging to see the commitment they are showing as they work towards this important milestone. A special mention goes to the Year 7 pupils, who have impressed us with their creativity and enthusiasm in Physics. Their homework models demonstrating thermal transfer were not only imaginative but also reflected real engagement with the topic and a practical approach to learning. It is fantastic to see such curiosity and hands-on involvement. Let us continue to build on this momentum as we move forward into the term. Mr Everitt

Year 7 Physics The pupils in Year 7 have produced impressive models demonstrating thermal transfer for their homework. Understanding these processes is essential because they explain everyday phenomena, from cooking and insulation to climate systems. In Physics, exploring thermal transfer helps students connect theory to real-world applications, such as designing energy-efficient homes or understanding how heat engines work.

Sports News The first week back has provided a highly positive and energetic start to the new term. Despite challenging weather conditions, pupils have demonstrated excellent commitment and enthusiasm. The attitude and effort shown across all sessions have been extremely encouraging.

Year 7 and 8 rugby training has focused on refining key core skills, with particular emphasis on effective ball presentation and developing a clearer understanding of the first player’s role at the breakdown. Through a combination of skill-based drills and conditioned games, pupils have improved both their technical ability and overall game awareness. These sessions have ensured that players continue to progress confidently as the season moves forward.

Year 9 to 11 pupils have enjoyed a strong start to the Spring Term football programme. The week began with goal-setting sessions and the establishment of clear season objectives, led by our Head of Football, Mr. Cox. Training has included a range of drills and small-sided matches designed to assess performance, develop teamwork, and prepare squads ahead of team selections for the first fixtures taking place next week.

Our U16 hockey team also began their competitive programme, taking part in the first round of the National Schools competition against Kingsdale Foundation School. The fixture provided a valuable early-season test, with players showing determination, resilience, and strong teamwork in a competitive environment.

Sports News Pupils participating in the Multi-sports programme have also enjoyed a varied and engaging week, taking part in activities including pickleball, fitness training on the ergometers, and table tennis. Meanwhile, our rowers have been training offsite at Walton Rowing Club, making excellent use of specialist facilities as they continue their preparation for the season ahead. A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week A reading from the Gospel of Matthew Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

Reflection

The Epiphany reminds us that all of us are called to share our gifts and talents. The wise men brought different gifts, and God has given each of us unique gifts and talents. The visit of the Magi reminds us that we have something to offer and highlights the importance of worship. We were made for worship—to adore our Creator. In various parts of the world, the Epiphany is marked by the time-honoured tradition of “chalking the doors.” The formula for the ritual is simple: take chalk of any colour (ideally blessed by a priest on the Feast of the Epiphany) and write above the entrance of your home: 20 + C + M + B + 26 The numbers represent the year (2026), and the letters stand for the traditional names of the Magi—Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—as well as the Latin phrase Christus Mansionem Benedicat (“May Christ bless this house”).

The letters have two meanings. First, they represent the initials of the Magi - Caspar, Malchior and Balthazar - who came to visit Jesus in the place where he was born. They also abbreviate the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat, which translates as “May Christ bless the house.”
