810JANUARY 20242025 3NOVEMBER JULY 2023 Message from the Headmaster On Saturday morning, our football teams from both the Prep and Senior Schools demonstrated true Cranmore spirit and determination in retaining the Henkes Shield. Their impressive performances were matched only by their stamina and unwavering will to compete right to the final minutes of every game, securing vital points for their teams. A huge thank you to the CPA and our Facilities Team for organising and delivering a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday evening, enjoyed by many pupils and parents. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring families from all three schools together and share a truly memorable experience. This week, we marked Anti-Bullying Week with moving and meaningful assemblies. Pupils wore odd socks to celebrate our differences and to remind us all of the importance of showing kindness, empathy, and compassion to everyone we meet. Our pupils, their families, and staff also showed compassion for the wider community by remembering those who lost their lives in world conflicts on Armistice Day and by donating generously to the Shoebox Appeal for the Children in Distress charity.
Mid-week brought more outstanding achievements: our U13 football team reached the final of the National IAPS competition, and the Senior Chamber Choir delivered a superb performance at the Woking Festival. It was inspiring to see pupils still making time to attend clubs and clinics, acting as reading mentors, and supporting their school through active participation in the School Council. Mr Everitt
Anti-Bullying Week We have been celebrating Anti-Bullying Week as a school this week. Year 11 delivered a powerful assembly on ‘The Power for Good’ on Wednesday. Students were challenged to think of ways in which they could be more proactive in preventing bullying and promoting kindness.
Students enjoyed wearing odd socks on Monday to celebrate diversity and the fact that each individual has value.
A variety of books promoting values such as kindness, tolerance, and compassion were on display in the library throughout the week.
Remembrance Day On Tuesday at 11 a.m., the whole school paused for a minute of silence in remembrance. This was followed by a moving performance of The Last Post by Barnaby H (Year 10). Barnaby had also played The Last Post and The National Anthem at the Remembrance Service held at the
Ockham War Memorial on Sunday.
Earlier that morning, an assembly focused on this theme encouraged pupils to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who served in times of conflict. It was a meaningful moment for our community to honour the past and consider how we can work together to build a better future.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
MathsLink Our Maths drop-in clinic, MathsLink, was a hive of activity during Friday lunchtime, as pupils endeavoured to stretch their mathematical understanding, as well as receive support from teachers and our in-house Maths Ambassadors. All pupils are welcome on Friday lunchtimes in A3, at any point during the year, for support with any aspect of their mathematics. It is a vibrant and caring space where pupils support each other and strive to improve. It is also a great way to kickstart the weekend, knowing that any concerns regarding mathematics topics learnt from the week before have been identified and resolved! Mr Savvides, Head of Senior Mathematics
Library News Over the coming weeks, we will be offering our pupils the opportunity to enter the National Literacy Trust’s Young Poet Laureate competition. Pupils who would like to participate are encouraged to speak to Mrs Watkinson in the library. They will watch a workshop by poets Karl Nova and Nikita Gill and then write their own poems which will be entered for the Young Poet Laureate competition in January. A Young Poet Laureate will be selected for each region of the UK and these Young Poet Laureates will have the opportunity of working with our current Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage! Further resources and information about this exciting opportunity can be found here. Mrs Watkinson, School Librarian
Christmas Shoebox Appeal A heartfelt thank you to all those who donated a shoebox for our Children in distress Shoebox Appeal. The Children in Distress charity has been sending shoeboxes as gifts to the marginalised and needy in Romania for the past 30 years. This programme has provided hope to thousands of Romanian families and we have been glad that we have been able to support this endeavour as a school community .
We managed to collect 118 boxes across the Effingham Schools Trust. These donations will bring hope to many in Romania and be a welcome gift of hope to those in need.

Sports News Cranmore U13 Football – National Finals Journey Having qualified through the Regionals, the Cranmore U13 football team travelled to Oxford today to compete in the last 16 of the National Finals. The boys were outstanding in the group stages, finishing unbeaten and without conceding a goal. Cranmore progressed as runners-up on goal difference. In the knockout rounds, the team continued their impressive form, defeating The Hall School 1–0 in the quarter-final and Handcross Park School 2–0 in the semifinal. This set up a thrilling National Final against Repton School. The match was a nail-biter: Cranmore conceded for the first time in the tournament, with the game ending 2–2 after normal time and golden goal. The title was decided on penalties, and in an agonising finish, Cranmore lost 3–2. The team played superbly throughout and represented the school with distinction. They came so close to adding the U13 title to the U11 National Championship won at Easter—a remarkable achievement that would have made Cranmore double National Champions. It was not to be this time, but we could not be prouder of their effort, skill, and sportsmanship.
Sports News The Henkes Shield – 40th Edition The Henkes Shield is an annual football competition between Cranmore and Rokeby schools, featuring teams from age groups U9 to U13. Established in 1983, this year marked the 40th edition of the event, with two years having been cancelled due to poor weather and the Covid pandemic. In a fantastic display of skill and teamwork, all Cranmore teams played superbly and secured victory on the day with an overall score of 5.5 points to 2.5. This result adds another triumph to Cranmore’s record, bringing their total wins to 22, while Rokeby remains close behind with 18 victories. Congratulations to all players and coaches for making this milestone event such a memorable occasion!
U18 LTA League v Ewell Castle School Effingham Sixth Form, including two Cranmore Year 11 pupils, made an impressive debut in their first-ever LTA League tennis match against Ewell Castle. The team demonstrated excellent gameplay and teamwork throughout the fixture, showing determination and composure in every set. It was fantastic to see each player showcasing their individual skills on court while supporting one another as a team. This strong start marks an exciting beginning for Effingham Sixth Form tennis, and the squad now looks forward to building on this performance in their next match against Epsom College in the coming weeks. A Message from our Chaplaincy Team
This Week A Reading from the Gospel of John
So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
Reflection
In this week of Remembrance it is important to reflect on the great sacrifice many have made for our freedoms that we enjoy today. We remember all we have loved and all we have lost. And we pray for them and ask God to keep them. Yet Jesus’ life and ministry reminds all of us that death is not the end and it does not have the final say. We are people of the Resurrection, people of hope.
Poem
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night.
"What soap is for the body, tears are for the soul." Jewish proverb
