Message from the Headmaster

On Friday last week, the school day ended with more than a splash of colour as pupils throughout the Senior School took part in the ever-eventful Colour Run. Spirits were high as pupils dashed around the Henderson Fields, finishing the week decorated with paint and smiles Thank you to the CPA for organising such a memorable event, and to the brave parents who transported boys home afterwards many of whom were very much in need of a long shower!

Last weekend, our Year 10 pupils who are undertaking the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award completed a highly successful practice expedition They set off early with great enthusiasm on Saturday morning, returning late on Monday evening a little tired but well prepared for the challenge ahead

I would also like to thank everyone involved in supporting Open Morning this week Our guests were greatly impressed by the school, our facilities, and particularly our tour guides, who were superb ambassadors for Cranmore.

Finally, this evening’s Year 11 Leavers’ Dinner will be a fitting celebration of our GCSE cohort’s journey through the school We are very much looking forward to coming together to recognise and celebrate all that they have achieved during their time at Cranmore

DofE Silver Practice Expedition - Ashdown Forest

From Saturday 25th April to Monday 27th April, our Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award pupils completed a highly successful practice expedition in Ashdown Forest. Over three demanding days, pupils walked between 13 and 20 kilometres each day, completing at least seven hours of activity while carrying their 60 to 70 litre rucksacks

They were fortunate to enjoy beautiful weather throughout, with stunning woodland routes carpeted in bluebells Navigation skills were tested and, when challenges arose, pupils demonstrated excellent teamwork and resilience to get themselves back on track.

Camping skills were equally impressive, with inventive meal planning that included pasta, rice and lentils often cooking lunch for the following day as well The first campsite was basic, allowing time for football (until the ball inevitably disappeared into a hedge!) and an evening spent stargazing under clear skies, despite a chilly night and a frosty morning

The second night provided a welcome upgrade, with a more comfortable campsite, warm showers and even the chance to spot wallabies On the final day, pupils crossed open heathland in warmer conditions and were rewarded at the finish with ice lollies and Haribos, restoring smiles to some very tired faces

It was a fantastic weekend that saw pupils develop independence, teamwork and perseverance, leaving them well prepared for their assessed expedition

Mission Collabor8

On Tuesday 28th April, nearly forty Year 8 students from across the Effingham Schools Trust came together for Mission Collabor8 Mixed teams pitched themselves against six mental and physical challenges designed to test their communication and problem‑solving skills.

Activities included a “turn over the sheet” game, where teams had to flip a large tarpaulin without anyone stepping off, and the easy sounding but deceptively difficult “floating stick” task Teams also worked together to build a continuous marble run using drainpipes and put their memories to the test by recalling twenty hidden items.

The students’ hard work was rewarded with pizza which, judging by the speed at which it disappeared, was a huge hit! A big thank you goes to all the students and parents who supported the event, and to the staff members from each school who made it possible

Colour Run

On Friday last week, after school, Senior pupils gathered on the Henderson Field for a lively and colourful activity There were several stations where cups were filled with different colours of dry paint, which the pupils could throw at one another A sprinkler was also used to help the paint stick, adding to the excitement.

It was great fun and a fantastic way for the pupils to let off steam at the end of the week

EST Careers Fair

Last Thursday, students in Year 10 and above were invited to attend our annual Trust wide Careers Fair

A diverse range of professions and industries were represented, including law, medicine, finance, marketing, hospitality, travel, media, sport, architecture and engineering.

The event provided an invaluable opportunity for students and their parents to explore future pathways as pupils begin to consider their A level choices and plans beyond school

Sports News

The Cranmore U15 Golf team were in action last Thursday against Cranleigh in a closely contested match. The team showed great composure and determination to secure a hard-fought 3–2 victory

The cricket season has begun in emphatic fashion, with all Senior teams getting their campaigns underway this week Wednesday afternoon saw a full programme of fixtures for our U13 cricketers, with all five teams facing Rokeby. Cranmore enjoyed a clean sweep, winning every match and demonstrating excellent teamwork and depth across the year group. Adding to this success, the U13 1st XI progressed to the second round of the Surrey Cup after an excellent victory over Broomwood Our U14s also made a winning start, claiming their first victory of the season against King Edward’s Whitley in a confident performance

Meanwhile, the U15s had a particularly busy week, competing in two fixtures as they continue to build momentum during the early part of the season. Finally, the U16s completed an intense spell of competition, playing three fixtures over the past week These matches marked the conclusion of their representative sporting commitments at Cranmore, as the pupils now turn their focus towards their upcoming GCSE examinations Their commitment and contribution to school sport over the years has been exemplary, and they should be extremely proud of what they have achieved

Chaplaincy News

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep I know my own, and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.”

Reflection

Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd not a distant ruler or a voice that commands from afar, but one who knows, guides, and protects A shepherd walks alongside the flock, stays close, and never abandons even the weakest or most lost.

Within our school community, this image reminds us that we are never alone Christ walks with us through lessons and friendships, through challenges and worries. He leads not by fear or force, but by trust, calling each of us by name and inviting us to follow

Pope Benedict XVI taught that Jesus is the Shepherd who “knows each of us personally and gives his life so that we may have life in abundance” To follow the Good Shepherd, then, is to learn to listen for his voice speaking quietly through our conscience, in prayer, and in how we choose to care for one another each day

As St Augustine reminds us, “We are the sheep of God’s pasture,” but we are also entrusted with a shared responsibility: to look after one another with love

Closing Prayer

Jesus, Good Shepherd, guide us when we are unsure, protect us when we are afraid, and help us to care for one another with kindness and patience. May we always trust in your voice and follow you in faith and love Amen.
