MD comment Welcome to the Winter edition of Fresh Source. The past few months has marked a period of significant activity, both here at the Brisbane Markets and across the broader fresh produce sector. From advocating during the independent review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct (Code) to collaborating with industry stakeholders at Hort Connections in Adelaide, we have continued to champion the future of our sector.

On-site at the Brisbane Markets, our focus has been on supporting the effective and efficient operation of the Markets and meeting the needs of tenants. This is highlighted by the commencement of Building H2 at South Gate West which will be the new home of Favco (Qld) Pty Ltd and further progression on the Curzon Street Bridge project. Coupled with the success of the recent Brisbane Markets Gala Dinner, it has been a productive few months of growth and connection.

Horticulture Code review The Code review has provided us with a once in a decade opportunity to advocate for the wholesaling sector.

Throughout the review, Brismark has held its position advocating for a fair, workable and fit-for purpose Code that does not impose additional regulatory burden and that provides a level playing field for all first point-of-sale transactions with a grower, excluding those that fall under the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct. To support our position, Brismark engaged Roy Morgan Research to undertake a survey of Australian growers. The oganisation also met with the Independent Reviewer, Mr Chris Leptos AO, and provided submissions regarding Brismark’s position. You can read more about the research and Brismark’s position from page 6.

Brisbane Markets Site Upgrades Several projects have been launched or delivered across the Brisbane Markets site during the first six months of the year.

Through a series of major construction, flood mitigation and maintenance projects, Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) is ensuring the site continues to meet the needs of the industry, while improving operational efficiency and supporting growth.

You can read more about some of these key projects on page 12.

The Brisbane Markets Gala Dinner It was fantastic to see such a wonderful turnout in June for the Brisbane Markets Gala Dinner. It has really become one of the most anticipated events on the Markets calendar and a night of celebration for the horticulture industry and for those who

received 40-year service awards. You can read more on page 18 about the event and the ten individuals who were presented with trophies in recognition of their contribution to the fresh produce sector in Queensland.

Retailer of the Year For the second year running, Erbachers Fruit and Vegetables on the Sunshine Coast was named as Australia’s number one independent, fruit and vegetable store, winning the A better choice! Retailer of the Year – People’s Choice Award. There was great representation again this year from all the A better choice! retailers in Queensland. A huge congratulations to all finalists who are featured on page 15.

Hort Connections It was wonderful to connect with so many people from across our industry at Hort Connections in Adelaide earlier this year. As always, the event proved to be an intense but highly rewarding forum advancing conversations and sharing connections and innovations to help shape the future of our industry. I would also like to congratulate Matthew Spencer who received the 2026 Fresh Markets Australia Young Achievers Award.

Hort Connections continues to be a great place to network, share information and learn new and exciting things about our industry. I am looking forward to keeping this momentum going at next year’s event in Melbourne.

In closing, while the first half of 2026 has already been dynamic, the months ahead promise to be equally fast-paced.

We look forward to the Final Report on the Code review being released and the progress of several major projects across the Brisbane Markets site. Alongside this, we have several events planned including our annual Mango Auction in September and the Forklift Operator of the Year event in October. I hope you enjoy this edition of Fresh Source.

Grower feedback addresses Code concerns The independent review of the Horticulture Code of Conduct (Code) continues to attract strong interest across Australia’s fresh produce industry, with Brisbane Markets wholesaler representative organisation, Brismark, saying recent feedback received from growers has addressed some of the concerns raised during the review process.

Brismark commissioned Roy Morgan Research to survey Australian fruit and vegetable growers about their understanding of the Code, their experiences working with wholesalers and their views on potential reforms. The findings have provided valuable insight into how growers view the current regulatory framework and the changes being considered as part of the independent review.

The Code was established to improve transparency and accountability in transactions between growers and traders (including wholesalers). It sets out obligations for both parties and provides a framework for managing disputes and ensuring fair trading practices across the sector.

Support for contracting out some requirements of the code that may not be relevant*

According to the survey findings, 61% of growers supported allowing wholesalers and growers to contract out of certain Code requirements where those requirements were not relevant to their individual business arrangements.

The survey also highlighted generally positive commercial relationships between growers and wholesalers across Australia’s Central Markets.

One of the more significant findings was that only 22% of growers reported having experienced a dispute with a Markets wholesaler during the previous five years. Of those 22% who had experienced a dispute, 58% said the matter was resolved directly between the grower and wholesaler without the involvement of a third party.

Mr Young said the survey results demonstrate that the current system is working effectively in many instances, particularly given the technological advances over the years, such as mobile phones and email, that have meant more efficient and effective communication channels.

“With 84% of growers supplying a Markets wholesaler (approximately 14,000 Growers), the survey responses indicate that only 1% to 2% of growers have an unresolved dispute in any given year,” he said.

“What the survey tells us is that growers and wholesalers are generally working together to resolve issues when they arise.

“That does not mean there is no room for improvement, but it does indicate that the majority of existing commercial relationships are functioning well.”

The survey findings have reinforced Brismark’s long-standing position that the Code should be retained while being refined to reduce unnecessary administrative and compliance burdens.

Mr Young said compliance costs have become an increasing concern for wholesalers operating in a challenging business environment characterised by rising labour, transport, energy and operating costs.

“A recent KordaMentha analysis prepared for Fresh Markets Australia estimated compliance costs at approximately $99,500 per Market wholesaler each year,” he said.

“When compliance requirements become excessively complex, they can place pressure on businesses that are already working hard to meet their obligations and serve growers effectively.”

Mr Young noted that the Code is already delivering accountability outcomes where breaches occur.

“The Code is providing accountability, with a number of traders facing financial penalties over recent years,” he said.

“The most recent examples involving traders in Western Australian demonstrate that, when applied correctly, the Code is capable of achieving the outcomes it was designed to deliver.”

Code While Brismark supports penalties for traders who deliberately fail to comply with the Code, the organisation advocates for targeted reforms that it believes will improve the effectiveness of the Code without creating unnecessary costs for compliant businesses.

Among the changes Brismark would like considered are measures to ensure compliance obligations remain practical and proportionate, and stronger recognition of the changes that have occurred in the industry along with the mutual responsibilities that exist between both parties.

Mr Young has suggested that a deemed agreement or terms should be implemented, with traders publishing or lodging their base standard terms which become the default if a Horticulture Produce Agreement (HPA) has not been signed.

“There are legal risks faced by traders just because a grower may, for whatever reason, not execute and return a HPA, while continuing to send supply to the trader” said Mr Young.

“Having a deemed agreement or terms will remove this unreasonable, indirect and “forced” non-compliance that puts traders at risk legally.

“If a trader or grower wants to establish more favourable terms, then they should be able to do that by accepting a HPA in writing.”

Brismark is also advocating for the retention of method or formula-based price setting for merchant transactions, which was strongly supported by the majority of growers who were surveyed by Roy Morgan Research.

“Removing this option will reduce flexibility and financial returns for growers,” said Mr Young.

“Growers can lodge a complaint if they believe a breach of the Code has occurred, and there are penalty provisions in place if a trader is found to have breached the Code and not disclosed the actual sales price or not acted in good faith.”

Another area of focus is the extension of the Code to all first point-of-sale transactions involving growers, excluding those that fall under the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct.

Brismark believes consistent application of the rules across the sector could help create a more level playing field and strengthen confidence in the industry’s regulatory framework.

“There is now a lot of fragmentation and diversification of fresh produce supply chains, and it is both justified and necessary for the Code to apply to all transactions that are the first point-of-sale with a grower,” said Mr Young.

Mr Young said Brismark has been supportive of the review process and looks forward to an outcome that delivers fairness and practicality and reduces regulatory burden.

“Any revised Code should continue to recognise that growers and traders both play an important role in maintaining an efficient, transparent and sustainable supply chain, and it is important that the industry operates under a framework that is fair and workable,” he said.

Understanding key Code requirements for traders and growers The Horticulture Code of Conduct (Code) is the mandatory industry Code that underpins commercial relationships between growers and traders (including wholesalers) across the fresh produce supply chain. It creates transparency, accountability and consistency in the way horticulture produce is bought and sold.

With increased surveillance and compliance checks by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), it is important that both traders and growers fully understand their rights and responsibilities to avoid penalties or enforcement action.

Code requirements for traders (wholesalers) Before entering into and during any commercial agreement, traders must do the following:

• Exercise reasonable care and skill in handling and storing the grower’s produce.

• Prepare, publish and make publicly available their Terms of Trade. These terms explain how the trader conducts business and provides information about their processes and operating arrangements.

• Pay the grower for produce within the specified payment period.

• Have a Horticulture Produce Agreement (HPA) in place before trading that has been accepted by the grower either by signing or in writing. The HPA must comply with the requirements of the Code, including stating quality specifications for produce to be sold.

• Maintain all required records for at least six years, and in some cases six years after the agreement expires and produce records when required to do so by the ACCC for a compliance check.

• Accept produce delivered under the HPA, except where the agreement permits you to reject it. If you are rejecting the produce within the agreed terms, ensure you notify the grower within 24 hours if your produce has been rejected.

• When acting as an Agent, sell the produce on ‘an arm’s length basis’ and act in the best interest of the grower.

• Give a statement to growers setting out the details of transactions at required times.

• Act in good faith in your business relationships with growers.

Code requirements for growers Before entering into and during any commercial agreement, growers must do the following: • Have a written HPA in place before trading that must be accepted either by signing it or by confirming in writing, such as by email or text message.

• Not send any produce until you have communicated acceptance of the HPA to the trader.

• Understand which pricing method the trader intends to use if acting as a merchant. This should be stated in the HPA as either agreed price, or a price method or formula.

• Keep all required records for at least six years and produce records when required to do so by the ACCC for a compliance check.

• Act in good faith in your business relationships with traders.

In the case of a dispute In business, disputes can happen for many reasons. It is important that if you have a dispute, you inform the other party in the first instance – it is encouraged that parties try to resolve disputes themselves before resorting to formal mediation. If the parties cannot resolve the dispute within three weeks, either party can opt for a mediation process under the Code. Growers who deal with a Brismark Member wholesaler are encouraged to contact the Brisbane Markets Dispute Resolution Grower Hotline on 1800 631 002 where Brismark can help to resolve the dispute.

If Brismark is unable to assist, then growers can use the mediation options outlined under the Horticulture Code of Conduct. Brisbane Markets Price Report sets a new standard for sales transparency As transparency of fresh produce trade continues to receive heightened attention as part of the Horticulture Code of Conduct (Code) review, the Brisbane Markets Price Report app is helping transform the way growers, wholesalers and other industry stakeholders access wholesale market information.

For almost two years, the platform has delivered an unprecedented level of visibility into fresh produce sales at the Brisbane Markets. Through the provision of daily sales data across more than 180 produce lines, the app gives users access to market intelligence based on actual trading activity rather than anecdotal market reports.

Brismark Chief Executive Officer and Brisbane Markets Limited Managing Director and CEO Andrew Young said the app was developed in response to longstanding calls from growers, industry groups, government agencies and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for greater transparency for wholesale produce pricing.

"This tool provides real sales invoice data from Brisbane Markets wholesalers rather than anecdotal reports, allowing growers and buyers to make more informed decisions," Mr Young said.

"The Brisbane Markets Price Report app displays the highest, lowest and average sales prices each trading day, allowing growers and buyers to have transparency of trade."

Developing Markets infrastructure Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) continues to invest in infrastructure across the Brisbane Markets site to meet the needs of Markets stakeholders and support future growth.

Favco’s new facility at Markets breaks ground Construction is also progressing on Building H2, a purposebuilt warehouse facility within the South Gate West precinct.

Earthworks have been completed, with approximately 6,000 m³ of material excavated and removed from the site.

Key construction activities are now underway, including pile installation retaining wall construction and the installation of in-ground footings.

The total project cost is approximately $5.3 million with contributions made by QRRRP of $2.5 million, Brismark $500,000 and Brisbane Markets Limited $2.3 million.

Construction remains on schedule for completion in the second half of 2026.

New roads in Markets precinct BML has recently completed significant asphalt resurfacing works across multiple locations within the Brisbane Markets site.

Approximately 9,000 m² of asphalt has been laid across five separate areas, creating smoother and more durable road surfaces for vehicles travelling throughout the site. The upgrades improve accessibility, support safer vehicle movements and reduce ongoing maintenance requirements.

By investing in preventative maintenance and road improvements, BML is helping ensure efficient movement of people, produce and freight throughout the Markets.

Work has also commenced on essential underground services such as stormwater drainage and sewer infrastructure.

Installation of the building’s primary structural steel is now underway, marking a significant milestone in the project.

Building H2 will provide Favco with modern warehousing facilities designed to support the operational needs of its businesses at the Brisbane Markets. Construction is expected to be completed in June 2027.

Curzon Street bridge project raises Markets access BML continues to make steady progress on the Curzon Street Bridge and roadway upgrade despite periods of wet weather affecting construction activities. The project forms a key part of BML’s flood mitigation strategy and will improve access to and from the Brisbane Markets site during flood events.

Once completed, the new bridge and roadway will sit 1.2 m higher than the previous structure. This increase in height will allow businesses to maintain access to the site for longer before a flood event and return sooner once conditions are safe. Improved accessibility is expected to minimise disruption and support business continuity during severe weather events.

The project is being delivered as part of the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Program (QRRRP), funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through

Young achiever recognised at Hort Connections Brismark Board Member and Carter and Spencer Group's Director – Group Operations, Matthew Spencer, was recently recognised as one of the fresh produce industry’s emerging leaders, receiving the 2026 Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) Young Achievers Award at Hort Connections in Adelaide.

The award recognises individuals who actively support their respective Market Chamber while demonstrating a commitment to the long-term success and sustainability of Australia’s horticulture industry. Recipients are selected based on their contribution to the wholesaling sector, industry participation and leadership potential.

A fourth-generation wholesaler with the Carter and Spencer Group, Mr Spencer was nominated by Brismark Chair Gary Lower in recognition of his ongoing commitment to industry representation, governance and professional development.

Mr Lower said Matthew’s contribution to Brismark, the wholesaler representative organisation based at the Brisbane Markets, and the broader fresh produce industry made him a worthy recipient of the award.

“Matthew’s involvement with Brismark underpinned his nomination for the award,” Mr Lower said.

“Over a number of years, he has consistently demonstrated a willingness to contribute to industry discussions, support the work of the Chamber and advocate for outcomes that strengthen the wholesaling sector.

“Matthew exemplifies the qualities recognised by the FMA Young Achievers Award through his support for Brismark and his commitment to the future sustainability of the industry.”

Mr Spencer’s involvement with Brismark began in 2015 when he joined both the organisation’s Junior Executive Committee and the Credit Service Committee. Those early roles provided valuable opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of the issues facing wholesalers and the broader fresh produce supply chain.

His commitment to industry service continued over the following years, culminating in his election to the Brismark Board in 2023. In early 2024, he was also appointed as Brismark’s representative as a non-executive director on the Fresh Markets Australia Board, where he contributes to discussions on issues affecting central markets and fresh produce wholesalers throughout the country.

The FMA Young Achievers Award is designed to recognise individuals who are not only active participants in the industry but who also demonstrate leadership, initiative and a willingness to support the organisations that represent growers, wholesalers and Market businesses.

Upon receiving the award, Mr Spencer was quick to acknowledge the people who have supported him throughout his career. He said the recognition reflected the collective effort of family members, colleagues and industry peers who had helped shape his development.

“Awards are wonderful to receive, particularly when they recognise your contribution to an industry you are passionate about,” Mr Spencer said.

Matthew Spencer accepts his Young Achievers Awards from FMA Chairperson Shane Schnitzler.

“However, achievements like this are never the result of one person alone. Without the support of a great team around you, there is no way I would be accepting this award.”

Mr Spencer paid tribute to his family, whose involvement in the fresh produce industry spans multiple generations.

“My family has been involved in the industry for a very long time, so fresh produce is certainly in the blood,” he said.

“I am grateful for the opportunity they have given me to be part of an industry that I genuinely enjoy and care deeply about.”

He also acknowledged the role played by the team at the Carter and Spencer Group, highlighting the dedication and professionalism required to support customers and suppliers every day.

“I would also like to thank the team at Carter and Spencer.

Together, we work hard every day to demonstrate the importance of the fresh produce industry and the positive impact it has on Australian communities,” he said.

Mr Spencer also thanked the Brismark Board for its support and for nominating him for the award. He reserved special acknowledgement for Brismark Chair Gary Lower, whom he credited for providing valuable guidance throughout his industry journey.

Recognition such as the FMA Young Achievers Award highlights the importance of developing future industry leaders and encouraging younger generations to become involved in industry representation. As Australia’s fresh produce sector continues to evolve, emerging leaders such as Mr Spencer play an important role in helping shape its future direction.

For Brismark, the award also reflects the value of investing in the development of young industry participants and creating opportunities for them to contribute to discussions that influence the future of the horticulture sector.

Mr Spencer’s achievement not only recognises his personal contribution but also highlights the strength of the next generation of leaders committed to supporting Australia’s fresh produce industry.

Retailer awards drive back-toback success A Sunshine Coast family business has once again been crowned Australia’s favourite fruit and vegetable retailer, securing back-to-back national honours in the A better choice!

Part-owner Tanya Husband, a third-generation member of the Erbacher family, said the award was a testament to the loyalty of the local community and the commitment of the store’s team.

Joining Erbacher’s among Queensland’s highest-ranked stores were Fresh Sensations Carindale in second place and Fruity Life Nambour in third, with both stores securing top-three finishes for a second consecutive year.

Fresh Sensations Carindale Manager Andrew Mousikos said the result reflected the dedication of his team and the support of loyal customers.

“Being recognised as one of Queensland’s leading fruit and vegetable retailers is incredibly rewarding for our family and team,” Mr Mousikos said.

“Knowing that customers have taken the time to vote for us is very meaningful. It reflects the effort we put into supplying quality produce, providing exceptional customer service and creating a welcoming shopping experience every day.”

Fruity Life Nambour owner Kurt Drummond said achieving a top-three finish once again highlighted the importance of team culture and customer loyalty.

The Erbacher story began in 1965, when Eric and Thelma Erbacher established the business. More than 60 years later, it remains family owned and operated, with Tanya working alongside her father, brother and uncle. Today, the business spans four generations, with family members continuing the tradition of providing fresh produce and personalised service to the local community.

The 2026 award marks Erbacher’s second consecutive national People’s Choice title and its fourth Queensland state award.

Brisbane Markets wholesalers showcased at Hort Connections Hort Connections is Australia’s largest annual horticulture industry event, where growers, researchers, retailers, technology providers, exporters, government representatives, suppliers and more network and explore the future of the sector. Brisbane Markets wholesalers were once again represented by Brismark and Brisbane Markets Limited at this important industry event, where forces were joined with Fresh Markets Australia, Market chambers and Central Market landlords nationally, under the umbrella of Australia’s Fresh Produce Markets.

For four days in June, more than 3,900 delegates, including over 1,000 growers, descended on Adelaide where they engaged with industry leaders, explored emerging technologies and built valuable business relationships.

With the horticulture sector contributing over $18.4 billion annually to the Australian economy (Hort Innovation, 2025), both BML and Brismark continue to support Hort Connections as it provides a strategic pathway to continue the growth of not only the industry but also the Central Market sector.

Glitz and glamour of the gala dinner The Brisbane Markets community came together on Friday 26 June 2026, as Brisbane Markets Limited and Brismark jointly hosted the Brisbane Markets Gala Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The highly anticipated event brought industry leaders, wholesalers, retailers and partners together for a memorable evening of fun, celebration, laughter and dancing. Guests were entertained by one of Australia’s most beloved comedians, Claire Hooper, while headliner band The Accidents kept the energy high and the dance floor full.

While volatility has always been a feature of the sector, rising costs and market pressures are reshaping how lenders assess risk and determine their appetite for lending.

For producers and agribusiness operators, understanding these evolving expectations and responding accordingly can make a significant difference when accessing and maintaining funding.

Seasonal variability driving closer scrutiny Seasonal variability remains a key risk, and increasingly frequent extreme weather events are contributing to greater earnings volatility. In response, lenders are placing greater emphasis on multi-season performance, stress testing and the strength of financial buffers. Lenders are adjusting cost benchmarks on a per-hectare or per-head basis and requiring larger working capital buffers to account for price fluctuations.

The timing mismatch between upfront input costs and delayed revenue places additional pressure on liquidity. As a result, borrowers who demonstrate structured procurement strategies, forward purchasing or hedging practices, and strong supplier relationships are better positioned to manage these challenges.

Clear visibility of input planning and cost controls is now a key element of credit assessment. Regular policy reviews, strong risk management practices and transparency regarding claims history all support lender confidence.

Farmland values and a shift towards cash flow discipline Farmland values remain relatively resilient, although growth is moderating. At the same time, rising costs are shifting attention away from capital appreciation and towards cash flow and repayment capacity.

Lenders are prioritising consistent earnings and prudent leverage. Lending decisions are increasingly based on a business’s ability to generate reliable earnings and service debt rather than on anticipated increases in land values. While land value gains may still provide a buffer, lenders are placing less reliance on future capital appreciation.

For borrowers, demonstrating operational improvements and maintaining a conservative approach to leverage are now more important than ever. Given the growth in land values over recent years, many loan-to-value ratios (LVRs) have reduced over time, potentially providing a buffer if values plateau or decline.

Positioning for stronger lending outcomes While the lending environment is becoming more complex, well-prepared businesses can still access funding on favourable terms.

The consistent theme across all areas is clear: lenders prioritise resilience, transparency and disciplined financial management.

In practical terms, this means robust budgeting, regular stress testing, funding structures aligned to cash flow cycles and proactive risk management.

Agribusinesses that take a structured, forward-looking approach will be best positioned to secure funding and support long-term growth.

Many insurers are increasingly willing to support funded resilience programs where those initiatives reduce the likelihood of significant claims. Agribusinesses that invest in these measures can often mitigate, or at least contain, the rise in insurance premiums.

Australia’s food sector is entering a more challenging operating environment. While cost-of-living pressures continue to weigh on household budgets, food inflation is re-emerging as a key concern for consumers, retailers and food producers.

For the broader food supply chain, the combination of cautious consumers, climate uncertainty and persistent cost pressures is reinforcing the strategic importance of fresh food categories.

Food inflation remains a key concern Food inflation has accelerated from its lows earlier in the year but remains well below the peak rates experienced during 2022-23 when annual food inflation exceeded eight percent.

Foodservice inflation has been even stronger in recent months as restaurants, cafés and catering businesses continue to pass on higher labour, ingredient and operating costs to customers.

Although housing and energy costs often attract the most public attention, food remains one of the largest contributors to overall consumer inflation, ensuring grocery prices remain firmly in the spotlight.

Within the food basket, several categories are experiencing particularly strong price growth. Red meat has been the standout performer, with double-digit rates of inflation across supermarket aisles as record export demand and tight cattle availability in some regions continues to underpin livestock markets.

Global developments are also influencing the outlook.

Australia’s food system remains exposed to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly any disruption to vessel movements through the Strait of Hormuz. The country relies heavily on imported diesel, fertiliser and packaging-related inputs that move through this critical trade route. While supply chains continue to operate, the situation remains fragile and risks persist, leaving the food sector vulnerable to further geopolitical shocks.

Consumers continue to adapt Despite a modest improvement in consumer confidence towards the end of June, Australian households remain under pressure from higher living costs and elevated interest rates. At the core of this issue is that real wages in Australia remain around five percent below early-2021 levels, despite a strong labour market.

Rather than reducing food spending altogether, many consumers are adapting their purchasing behaviour in response to tighter budgets. This is driving increased demand for private label products, greater reliance on promotional offers and discounting, and more selective spending across discretionary food categories.

Households are also continuing to shift consumption patterns, with more meals being prepared at home as consumers seek to manage food budgets more carefully. While grocery spending has been relatively resilient, foodservice operators are facing increasing pressure as some consumers reduce the frequency of dining out, takeaway purchases and other discretionary food occasions.

These behavioural changes are reshaping competitive dynamics across the food industry. Retailers that can deliver a compelling combination of value, quality and convenience are likely to outperform, while suppliers must balance affordability with product differentiation as shoppers become increasingly price-conscious and promotion-sensitive.

Fresh food becomes a strategic differentiator Against this backdrop, fresh food has become a critical battleground across the Australian retail sector. Fresh produce, together with animal proteins such as meat and dairy, is increasingly viewed as a key driver of store choice, customer loyalty and perceptions of value. Climate-related disruptions have further highlighted the importance of reliable supply chains that can consistently deliver quality and availability.

Award-winner Van Rooyen Family Farms proves success starts in the soil There is a common farming principle: if you treat the soil well, it will look after you in return. It is a philosophy that many growers live by, and in the fields around Bundaberg, that is exactly what lychee grower Craig Van Rooyen has done.

As one of Australia’s largest lychee producers, Mr Van Rooyen and his family have spent more than two decades improving the soil health of their farm. Their goal has been not only to increase production and fruit quality, but also to build a sustainable, multi-generational family business.

“It is no secret that healthy soils produce better yields and better-quality produce, leading to stronger returns,” Mr Van Rooyen says.

"I have always believed in leaving a place in better condition than I found it."

property was not an established produce farm, it provided the foundation for their future success.

“When we took over the farm, I started working with lychees and focused heavily on improving soil health,” Mr Van Rooyen says.

“For more than 20 years, we have invested in practices that improve the soil and support better yields and quality.”

According to Mr Van Rooyen, soil health was not a major topic of discussion among growers when he began farming in the early 2000s. While others achieved good results through traditional methods, he believed there was value in taking a different approach.

“Since we started, we have only added products that improve soil function and support long-term productivity,” he says.

“It is also better for long-term sustainability because you need less water and fewer chemical inputs while still achieving consistent results.

“In everything we do, soil health is a priority. By focusing on that, we have transformed what was once a cattle farm into a productive horticultural operation that continues to grow.”

Craig and his wife Barbara, emigrated from South Africa in the late 1990s. Seeking a safer environment in which to raise a family, they chose to make Australia home.

After settling in Bundaberg, Craig continued his farming career while Barbara worked as an anaesthetist at Bundaberg Base Hospital.

“We chose Bundaberg because I had experience farming sugar cane in South Africa, and Queensland offered similar opportunities,” he says.

After managing an avocado orchard, the couple purchased an undeveloped 110acre cattle property at South Bingera, about 16 kilometres south-west of Bundaberg. While the Craig Van Rooyen supplies his Lychee's to the Brisbane Markets as well as countries all over the world.

“Over the years we have incorporated probiotics, carbon, compost and beneficial microbes. Healthy soils require fewer fertilisers and chemical inputs, reducing operating costs and improving profitability.

“In an industry where consistent profits can be difficult to achieve, that has made a real difference.”

Today, he believes most growers recognise the importance of soil health.

“Across the Bundaberg region, a large proportion of growers are investing in soil health because they understand the benefits,” he says.

“If you take care of the land, the land will take care of you.”

That philosophy was recognised recently when Mr Van Rooyen received the Environmental and Sustainability Award at the 2026 Horticulture Awards for Excellence, hosted during Hort Connections in Adelaide.

“It was a great honour, and I was humbled to be nominated,” he says.

“I have always believed in leaving a place in better condition than I found it. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of Australia, and we work hard to ensure our farming practices benefit both the environment and the wider community.

“We focus on sustainable practices because we know that if we do not plan for the future, there may not be one for the next generation.”

As the business has grown, so too has the family’s farming footprint. From a single property 25 years ago, the Van Rooyen family now operates five orchards across the Wide Bay region, giving them one of the longest harvesting windows in the country.

“Continuity of supply is important to us and to our customers,” Mr Van Rooyen says.

“They expect excellent quality, and we strive to deliver it.

“That is why we have invested heavily in infrastructure and technology, including advanced grading systems, modern packaging solutions and temperature-controlled storage facilities.”

The family supplies fruit through the Brisbane Markets and other Central Markets across Australia, while export customers include Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, France, the United Arab Emirates, Canada and the United States.

For Mr Van Rooyen, however, the greatest achievement is building a business that will continue into the future. His sons, Devon, Connor and Jayden, are all involved in the operation and are committed to carrying the family legacy forward.

“My children are just as committed to the business as I am.

They are completing their horticulture studies while helping manage the farms,” he says.

“I always say that if you can leave something in a better state than you found it, then you are doing something right. We have built something special here, and it is rewarding to know it will continue for future generations.”

BGGA becomes North Queensland Farmers

For more than a century, growers in the Bowen region have understood the value of working together.

The first recorded growers’ association in the district, the Bowen Farmers Association, was established in 1901 to enable the bulk purchasing of farm supplies. Over the decades, growers continued to strengthen their collective voice through organisations such as the Bowen Fruit Export Society, formed in 1921 and wholly owned and governed by local growers, and the Bowen Farmers Co-operative Association, established in 1955 through the amalgamation of two farmer groups.

As the region's horticulture industry expanded, so too did its representative organisations. The Bowen District Growers Association later evolved into the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association (BGGA), which has represented growers through significant industry challenges and opportunities for more than two decades.

Importantly, the transition also recognises the expanding geographical reach of the organisation. While Bowen and Gumlu remain at the heart of its identity, the organisation now delivers services, projects and advocacy support to growers across North Queensland. Adopting a name that better reflects the growers and communities it serves was a natural next step.

While the name has changed, the organisation's purpose remains the same: supporting growers, strengthening regional agriculture and ensuring farming communities have a strong and effective voice.

More than 120 years after local farmers first joined forces, North Queensland Farmers Limited continues that proud tradition of growers working together to build a stronger future.

Today, the organisation is entering a new chapter.

BGGA has transitioned to North Queensland Farmers Limited, a company limited by guarantee. The change reflects the organisation's growth in recent years, including the delivery of increasingly large and complex projects across regional Queensland. The new structure provides stronger governance arrangements, greater transparency and enhanced accountability, ensuring the organisation is well positioned to manage future opportunities and responsibilities.

Supporting local growers on the Granite Belt

Granite Belt Growers Association (GBGA) is continuing to connect and assist our growers with support from our sponsors such as Brismark and Brisbane Markets Limited. We continue to be very thankful for our sponsors.

Our popular Farming After Hours has continued in 2026. For the summer meeting, there was a demonstration of a plastic and trickle tape roller. At the recent end-of-season event in June, we had a great turn-out of farmers and families. The rain did not dampen the festivities; it was a perfect evening for a ‘pig on the spit’.

In June, Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers held an open meeting for growers on Varroa Mite which is affecting bee numbers.

Dr Diana Leemon (DipEd(UQ), BSc(UQ), GradDipBioT(QUT), MAS(QUT), PhD(UQ)) spoke to us as an entomologist and provided some

sobering statistics on the varroa mite and what ramifications there may be for growers who require pollination services either commercially arranged or through incidental or wild bee/alternative pollinators. BEE PREPARED was the message.

In conjunction with the Department of Trade, Employment and Training, GBGA had a stall at the Stanthorpe Jobs Expo.

We connected with young job seekers, people returning to work and those seeking a change in careers all looking for pathways into various jobs in the Horticulture industry.

These regular events provide our farmers with an opportunity to get off the farm and talk with others dealing with the same challenges and to relax over a shared meal. We are concerned for our member’s mental health, and these events are a comfortable place to show our support for each other. We are there to listen and support.

Unlike most other regions this year, our summer rains did not happen, and, on top of a hot, windy season, our water resources were getting dire. Recently we have had some rain but still need more to secure the next growing season.

Stanthorpe water security is being supported by the State Government with the Hon Ann Leahy, Minister for Local Government and Water recently in the area to announce they are pledging $3 million towards creating a long-term water security plan for the area. Supporting Bundaberg's thriving horticulture industry

By Bree Watson, Chief Executive Officer, Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers Limited (BFVG) The second half of the year is shaping up to be a busy one for our region, with some important advocacy wins alongside a packed calendar of events celebrating Bundaberg's thriving horticulture industry.

One of the most significant announcements in recent weeks was Premier David Crisafulli's visit to Bundaberg to reaffirm the Queensland Government's commitment to rebuilding Paradise Dam. Following months of uncertainty, this commitment provides much-needed confidence for irrigators and regional businesses. Our focus now turns to ensuring work progresses as quickly as possible to restore long-term water security for the Bundaberg Irrigation Scheme.

Advocacy also continues on the Burnett-Mary region's inclusion in the Great Barrier Reef protection regulations.

Environmental protections are important, but so too is ensuring regulation remains based on current, measurable science. We are calling on the Queensland Government to 'check the science' underpinning these regulations to ensure positive environmental outcomes are achieved without placing unnecessary burdens on growers.

While advocacy remains a core focus, there is also plenty to look forward to over the coming months.

Preparations are well underway for the BFVG Gala Dinner to be held on 12 September. The Gala attracts between 500-600 guests and is now one of the region's premier agricultural

events, bringing together growers, industry leaders and the wider community to celebrate the achievements of our horticulture sector.

Many Brisbane Markets wholesalers have been long-standing supporters of the Gala through sponsorship and attendance, and we sincerely thank them for their ongoing commitment to our industry. The Gala provides an excellent opportunity to host key customers for an enjoyable evening while also giving back to the growers whose businesses underpin the success of the Brisbane Markets.

Also in September, the Taste Bundaberg Festival offers locals and visitors the opportunity to experience our incredible local produce through a range of events, and Agrotrend, a two-day agricultural event that showcases the latest innovations in agriculture, machinery and technology. Later in the month, the Mundubbera Blueberry Festival will celebrate the regions outstanding horticultural industries, highlighting the growers, businesses and communities that contribute to its success.

These events not only celebrate our region's agricultural heritage but also generate significant economic benefits through tourism, hospitality and local business activity. They provide an opportunity for the broader community to better understand the importance of horticulture to our regional economy and the thousands of jobs it supports.
