SPRING AND SUMMER 2024

Eerdmans
NEW RELEASES

Dear Reader,

We are awash in narratives of decline: Colleges are struggling. Seminaries are closing. Our culture is regressing into barbarism. Evangelicalism is self-destructing. Catholicism is either out of touch or too much in touch. Christianity’s historic hypocrisies have come into full hideous flower, and the stench is unbearable. Our young people, beyond disgusted, are abandoning the churches.

No footnotes needed: do we not all know, all too well, the evidence for these laments?

But as I review the pages of this catalog, I find copious evidence of something else. I find evidence of restorative hope (I’m borrowing a book title you’ll find inside), of defiant hope and active love (another book title).

In this catalog I find writers surveying the current scene—staring it right in the face—and standing up to offer testimonies to endurance, to perseverance, to recovery, to healing, to liberation, to the power of truth over falsehood. I find scholars and theologians mining resources from scripture and tradition in order to pass on the story of faith to new generations. Gifted verbal artists persevere in teaching readers how to hear, how to pray, how to lead. Ministers and other contemplative activists show how to carry on the work.

We hope these 56 catalog pages, pointing to 90 books containing 10 million words, will give you hope that decline and despair need not have the last word. We hope you will find here books that will renew your ability to believe, and above all, to love, and to lead others into loving, believing, and hoping. Let’s read and live into a narrative of ascent.

Sincerely,

As a volume of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, James D. Nogalski’s fresh commentary on Micah is academically serious and pastorally relevant. Nogalski takes his readers into the world of the ancient prophet and that of the later tradents of the book. At the same time, he exposes the enduring significance of the book’s message. This is a commentary as it should be.”

—Jakob Wöhrle Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen

Words Are Not Enough

Paratexts, Manuscripts, and the Real New Testament

An innovative study of the manuscript history of the New Testament, encompassing its paratexts— titles, cross-references, prefaces, marginalia, and more

How did the Bible come to be? In Words Are Not Enough, Garrick V. Allen argues that our exploration of New Testament origins must take account of more than just the text on the page. Allen traces the history of its manuscripts, including formatting, titles, prefaces, subscriptions, cross-references, marginalia, and illustrations. Along the way, he explains how anonymous scribes and scholars contributed to our framing—and thereby our understanding—of the New Testament. Students, scholars, and any curious reader will learn how the handwritten transmission of the sacred text can enrich our biblical interpretation.

Garrick V. Allen is professor of divinity and biblical criticism at the University of Glasgow. He has written dozens of academic articles, popular pieces, and multiple award-winning monographs, including The Book of Revelation and Early Jewish Textual Culture, which won a Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise, and Manuscripts of the Book of Revelation, which won the Paul J. Achtemeier Award for New Testament Scholarship.

That I May Dwell among Them

Incarnation and Atonement in the Tabernacle Narrative Gary A. Anderson

What does Israel’s tabernacle mean for Christians today?

AVAILABLE NOW

978-0-8028-8306-3 • 270 Pages • Hardcover

$35.99 US • $48.99 CAN • £28.99 UK

The Tabernacle Narrative comprises passages in Exodus and Leviticus that detail the construction, furnishing, and liturgical use of the tabernacle. Gary Anderson shows how these passages shed light on indwelling and atonement both in ancient Israel’s theology and in Christian theology. God’s “indwelling” in the tabernacle offers a unique witness to the nature of incarnation, supplementing the story told in the gospels. Likewise, analysis of the purpose of sacrifice at the tabernacle deepens our understanding of Christ’s passion. Far from connoting penal substitution, sacrifice in the Old Testament demonstrates self-emptying as an antidote to sin. Theologians, pastors, and serious readers of the Bible will appreciate how Anderson’s canonical and literary analysis of the Tabernacle Narrative illuminates Christian theology.

Gary A. Anderson is Hesburgh Professor of Catholic Thought at the University of Notre Dame. His previous books include Charity: The Place of the Poor in the Biblical Tradition; Sin: A History; and Christian Doctrine and the Old Testament: Theology in the Service of Biblical Exegesis.

“While careful and scholarly, Anderson’s prose is accessible and clear, and his book will be appreciated by clergy or scholars who wish to return ad fontes to enrich their study and contemplation of some of the core themes of the Christian faith.”

—The Living Church

“God’s presence in the temple and the meaning of the sacrifices offered there are among the most misunderstood, misrepresented, or neglected elements of biblical religion— and yet, as this extraordinarily perceptive, lucidly written, and well-argued book demonstrates, they are essential to understanding the Bible. Anyone interested in biblical theology would do well to ponder both the fascinating literary connections Anderson draws and the profound religious insights he develops.”

The Incomparable God

Readings in Biblical Theology

“My

Lord! There is no one like you among the gods!”

That God is unlike anyone or anything else is a truth lodged deep within Christian Scripture. In The Incomparable God, Old Testament scholar Brent A. Strawn offers thoughtful insight into this theological mystery. This volume collects eighteen of Strawn’s most provocative essays on the nature of God, several of which are published for the first time here. Encompassing close readings of Scripture, biblical-theological argument, and considerations of praxis, The Incomparable God is essential reading for Old Testament scholars and students.

Brent A. Strawn is D. Moody Smith Distinguished Professor of Old Testament and professor of law at Duke University. He is also a senior fellow in the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University and an ordained elder in the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Collin Cornell is assistant professor of Bible and mission at Fuller Theological Seminary. M. Justin Walker is assistant professor of Old Testament and Christian ministry at Lee University.

The Destruction of the Canaanites

God, Genocide, and Biblical Interpretation Charlie Trimm

How can a good God command genocide?

In this short, accessible offering, Charlie Trimm provides the resources needed to make sense of one of the Bible’s most difficult ethical problems—the Israelite destruction of the Canaanites in the Old Testament. After surveying important background issues, Trimm explores four approaches to reconciling biblical violence: reevaluating either God, the Old Testament, the interpretation of the Old Testament, or the nature of the violence itself.

Charlie Trimm is associate professor of biblical and theological studies at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University. He is the coauthor, with Brittany Kim, of Understanding Old Testament Theology and the author of Fighting for the King and the Gods: A Survey of Warfare in the Ancient Near East and “YHWH Fights for Them!”: The Divine Warrior in the Exodus Narrative.

God’s Righteousness and Justice in the Old Testament

Jože

A semantic study of God’s righteousness and justice in the Hebrew Bible that draws exegetical, theological, and philosophical conclusions about the character of God and God’s relationship with humanity

Jože Krašovec undertakes the present study to put semantics into dialogue with exegesis and theology to investigate exactly how God’s righteousness and justice should be understood in the Old Testament. In the first part of the book, Krašovec analyzes occurrences of the Hebrew root sdq (meaning righteous) and synonyms, working systematically through the entire Old Testament canon. In the second part, he builds off this lexical study with a more broadly exegetical, theological, and philosophical exploration of guilt, punishment, mercy, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

Jože Krašovec is professor of biblical studies at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and a full member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. A former president of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament, Krašovec is the author of numerous monographic studies and articles published in Slovene, English, German, French, and other languages.

Messianism in the Hebrew Bible and Early Jewish Texts Torleif Elgvin

An exegetical and diachronic survey of messianic texts from the Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition up through the first millennium CE Warrior, King, Servant, Savior is an exegetical and diachronic survey of messianic texts from the Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition up through the first millennium CE that maintains close dialogue with relevant historical research and archaeological insights. Internationally respected biblical scholar Torleif Elgvin recounts the development and impact of messianism, from ancient Israel through the Hasmonean era and the rabbinic period, with rich chapters exploring messianic expectations in the Northern Kingdom, postexilic Judah, and Qumran, among other contexts. For this multifaceted topic—of marked interest to Jews, Christians, and secular historians of religion alike—Elgvin’s handbook is the essential and definitive guide.

Torleif Elgvin is professor emeritus of biblical and Jewish studies at NLA University College, Oslo. Rediscovering the Wisdom of the Corinthians

Paul, Stoicism, and Spiritual Hierarchy

A bold new reading of 1 Corinthians in light of Greco-Roman philosophy

Timothy A. Brookins unsettles common assumptions about the Corinthian conflict in this innovative monograph. Brookins’s exegesis of 1 Corinthians 1–4 shows that the Corinthian problem had roots in Stoicism rather than sophistry, as scholars have often assumed. His skillful analysis provides much-needed clarity on the context of a major epistle and on Pauline theology more broadly.

Timothy A. Brookins is professor of early Christianity at Houston Christian University. His previous books include Corinthian Wisdom, Stoic Philosophy, and the Ancient Economy and Reading 1 Corinthians

“Timothy Brookins makes his most robust case yet for the ‘Stoic thesis’ to explain the situation and the habitus reflected in 1 Corinthians 1–4 and thus, essentially, the rest of the letter. All who are seriously interested in 1 Corinthians must wrestle with his detailed exegesis and with his comprehensive proposal concerning the Christ-believing, ‘sub-Stoic school’ of the wise and spiritual in Corinth—its identity, origin, convictions, and relation to Paul.”

Paul and Imperial Divine Honors

Christ, Caesar, and the Gospel

D. Clint Burnett Foreword by Pheme Perkins

How did the imperial cult affect Christians in the Roman Empire?

D. Clint Burnett examines copious evidence—literary, epigraphic, numismatic, and archaeological—to reconstruct Christian engagement with imperial cultic activity in the Roman Empire. Examining imperial divine honors in Philippi, Thessalonica, and Corinth, Burnett argues that early Christianity was not specifically antigovernment but more broadly countercultural, and that responses to this stance ranged from conflict to apathy. Burnett’s compelling argument adds much-needed nuance to common scholarly narratives about the first Christians’ relationship with the Roman Empire.

D. Clint Burnett is an independent scholar with research interests in early Christianity and Greco-Roman material culture. He holds a PhD in Biblical Studies from Boston College. His previous books include Studying the New Testament through Inscriptions: An Introduction and Christ’s Enthronement at God’s Right Hand and Its Greco-Roman Cultural Context.

“Imperial divine honors were everywhere in the Roman empire, but Burnett demonstrates that they were not everywhere the same. Burnett’s meticulous research is crucial for scholars like me who are prone towards overgeneralizations. He corrects common misconceptions about the Roman imperial cult with the precision accuracy of a surgeon, but also a good surgeon’s grace and gentleness. Clergy will benefit from Burnett’s broad insights, scholars from his encyclopedic knowledge.”

New Testament

Gospel Media

Reading, Writing, and Circulating Jesus Traditions

Contextualizing the gospels in ancient Greco-Roman media practices

Nicholas Elder updates our knowledge of the gospels’ media contexts in this myth-busting academic study. Carefully combing through Greco-Roman primary sources, he exposes what we take for granted about ancient reading cultures and offers new and better ways to understand the gospels.

Nicholas A. Elder is assistant professor of New Testament at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. He is also the author of The Media Matrix of Early Jewish and Christian Narrative.

“Drawing upon the best recent scholarship, modern literary and critical theory, a wide array of ancient textual sources, and both common sense and statistical analysis, Elder ‘colorizes’ our sense of ancient gospel tradition within the world of ancient Mediterranean media, ably navigating its rich diversity. Gospel Media is an excellent book that builds on a cresting wave of scholarship on ancient media—reading, writing, textuality, and publication—in relation to gospel tradition and looks to synthesize a new paradigm that is to be taken seriously by future generations of scholars of the gospels and of ancient media more generally.”

A major scholarly collaboration exploring vivid visual rhetoric in the New Testament

In this landmark collection, leading New Testament scholars come together to probe the purpose and import of ekphrasis in early Christian literature. Their essays cover vivid visual description in the gospels, epistles, Revelation, early martyr literature, and more in their historical contexts. Vivid Rhetoric and Visual Persuasion is a must-read for scholars of early Christianity and rhetorical criticism.

Meghan Henning is associate professor of Christian origins at the University of Dayton. Her previous books include Educating Early Christians through the Rhetoric of Hell and Hell Hath No Fury: Gender, Disability, and the Invention of Damned Bodies in Early Christianity.

“Henning and Neumann have assembled a stellar cast of contributors to illuminate the use of ekphrasis in the New Testament and other early Christian literature. With attention to reception history, the methods and criteria for identifying vivid visual rhetoric, and exegetical nuances, the essays in this volume not only describe the state of research but also significantly advance the study of ekphrasis in ancient Christian texts. I am not aware of another volume quite like this!”

Christmaker

A Life of John the Baptist

Meet the real John the Baptist

For many, John the Baptist is a footnote in the gospels—Jesus’s unkempt forerunner. But if we look closer, John emerges as a fascinating and influential religious leader in his own right.

James F. McGrath turns his critical eye to overlooked details in Scripture and long-neglected sources to flesh out John’s life story and his far-reaching influence on the history of religion. This fresh look at the life of John the Baptist will fascinate any reader interested in John, Jesus, and their dynamic world.

James F. McGrath is Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature at Butler University.

John of History, Baptist of Faith

The Quest for the Historical Baptizer

A groundbreaking historical-critical study of John the Baptist

The first study of its kind, this book sheds light on the historical John the Baptist and his world. James F. McGrath applies historical-critical methodology not only to the New Testament but also to the Mandaean Book of John, a holy text of the last extant gnostic sect. Bold in its claims yet careful in its methodology, McGrath’s pioneering monograph lends fresh insight into John, Jesus, and their world.

Paul the Storyteller

A Narratological Approach

An incisive study of Paul’s use of stories and narratives in his letters

Paul is often thought of as a crafter of numerous and complex arguments, but some scholars, such as N. T. Wright and Richard Hays, have claimed that narratives are vitally important in his letters. Through careful examination of the texts, Christoph Heilig demonstrates that Paul is indeed a talented teller of stories— not only explicit narratives but also implicit stories. Students and scholars of the New Testament will welcome Heilig’s expert guidance through a hotly debated area of Pauline studies.

Christoph Heilig leads a research group at the University of Munich that focuses on the intersection between literary studies and biblical exegesis. His books include The Apostle and the Empire, Paul’s Triumph, and Hidden Criticism. His previous book on narratives in Paul (Paulus als Erzähler?) received a Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise.

Trust in Atonement

God, Creation, and Reconciliation

Teresa Morgan

Teresa Morgan argues for understanding atonement as the restoration of trust between God and humanity through the trust and trustworthiness of Jesus Christ

Weaving together exegesis and theology, sociology and psychology, Morgan shows how trust saves both the sinful and the suffering. She also illuminates the role of trust in forgiveness and reconciliation between human beings. Students and scholars of the New Testament will find Morgan’s argument a welcome challenge to both classical and current leading frameworks of atonement.

Teresa Morgan is the McDonald Agape Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at Yale Divinity School.

Remarriage in Early Christianity

Against the grain of scholarly consensus,

A. Andrew Das argues that early Christians did not approve of remarriage after divorce

Das covers contemporary Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts, the Gospels, Paul’s epistles, and ante-Nicene interpretation, seeking an exegetically sound answer to the question of remarriage. This bold study will challenge scholars and enlighten any Christian concerned with what Scripture has to say on this perennially relevant topic.

A. Andrew Das is the Niebuhr Distinguished Chair and professor of religious studies at Elmhurst University. He is the author or editor of over ten books in biblical studies, including Scriptures, Texts, and Tracings in 2 Corinthians and Philippians and Paul and the Stories of Israel: The Grand Thematic Narratives of Galatians.

Jesus and His Promised Second Coming

Jewish Eschatology and Christian Origins

Tucker S. Ferda Foreword by Dale C. Allison Jr.

Most critical scholars take for granted that Jesus’s second coming was invented by his early followers. In Jesus and His Promised Second Coming, Tucker S. Ferda challenges this consensus. Ferda works backward through reception history to argue that the hope for the second coming originated in Jesus’s own grappling with the prospect of death and his conviction that the kingdom was near; he expected a return that would coincide with the final judgment and the end of the age within the space of a generation. Ferda’s bold and historically astute study breathes new life into a long-stagnant conversation.

Tucker S. Ferda is assistant professor of New Testament at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.

Jesus and Divine Christology

Brant Pitre

Since the beginning of the quest for the historical Jesus, scholars have dismissed the idea that Jesus could have identified himself as God. Brant Pitre challenges this widespread assumption and makes a robust historical case that Jesus did consider himself divine. Carefully explicating the Gospels in the context of Second Temple Judaism, Pitre shows how Jesus used riddles, questions, and scriptural allusions to reveal the apocalyptic secret of his divinity. Ultimately, Pitre argues that the origins of early high Christology can be traced to the historical Jesus’s words and actions. Scholars and students of the New Testament—and anyone curious about the Jewish context of early Christianity—will find Pitre’s argument a necessary and provocative corrective to a critically underexamined topic.

Brant Pitre is Distinguished Research Professor of Scripture at the Augustine Institute Graduate School of Theology. He has authored numerous books, including Paul, a New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology and Jesus and the Last Supper

The

Trials

of Jesus

Evidence, Conclusions, and Aftermath

Paul Barnett

The Gospels describe a complex chain of events from Jesus’s arrest to his crucifixion—interrogations from multiple high priests, a confrontation with Herod the Tetrarch, and finally Pontius Pilate’s unusual hesitancy leading to Jesus’s execution. Paul Barnett sheds new light on this crucial narrative, filling readers in on the four hundred years of history and geopolitics between Malachi and Matthew. With rich context and expert storytelling, The Trials of Jesus will intrigue and enlighten any serious reader of Scripture.

Paul Barnett is a New Testament scholar and Australian Anglican bishop. An expert in historical Jesus studies, he is also the author of Is the New Testament History? and the New International Commentary on the New Testament volume on 2 Corinthians.

Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine

Vol. 1 of Doctrine and Scripture in Early Christianity

Frances M. Young Foreword by David F. Ford

How did we get from Scripture to creed?

The first of two volumes exploring the emergence of doctrine in the early church, Scripture, the Genesis of Doctrine reframes the relationship between Scripture and Christian doctrine according to the intellectual context of the first few centuries CE. Frances M. Young situates the early Christians’ biblical hermeneutic within the context of GrecoRoman learning without espousing historical relativism. Ultimately, Young argues that the scriptural canon and the rule of faith emerged concurrently in the early Church, and both were received as apostolic. The perceived gap between the two may in fact be the product of our modern assumptions rather than an ancient reality. Nuanced and ecumenical, Young’s magisterial study holds widespread implications for not only patristics but also exegesis and systematic theology.

Frances M. Young is emeritus professor of theology at the University of Birmingham and a fellow of the British Academy.

“A masterful treatment of the interdependent relationship between Scripture and doctrine by a virtuoso of theology. Drawing upon decades of research into the ways in which exegetical practices and theological reflection developed in the early centuries, and occasionally revising earlier positions, Frances Young shows how the modern chasm between the two may be bridged, so opening a way, by a ‘postmodern turn,’ to a reinvigorated doctrinal reading of Scripture as a whole centered upon Christ.”

—John Behr University of Aberdeen

Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute

Vol. 2 of Doctrine and Scripture in Early Christianity

Frances M. Young Foreword by David F. Ford

Though widely accepted by Christians since the fifth century, the Trinity and the two natures of Christ seem to be unfounded in historical interpretations of Scripture. Frances M. Young tackles this apparent disconnect in a culmination of decades of biblical and patristic research. The second of two volumes, Scripture in Doctrinal Dispute illuminates the role of biblical hermeneutics in the debates that forged Christian dogma on the nature of God—in the well-known councils of the fourth century and beyond. This magisterial study holds widespread implications for not only patristics but also exegesis and systematic theology.

Shaman and Sage

The Roots of “Spiritual but Not Religious” in Antiquity

The first volume of Michael Horton’s magisterial intellectual history of “spiritual but not religious” as a phenomenon in Western culture

In the first volume of his magisterial intellectual history, Michael Horton locates the roots of the contemporary “spiritual but not religious” movement in pre-Socratic antecedents of Platonism. Horton makes the case that the Orphic shaman represented a “divine self” that seeks to break free from physicality and become one with a panentheistic unity. Belief in divinity hiding in nature arose as an alternative to monotheism periodically throughout Western history. Horton’s sweeping three-volume set will be the authoritative work students and scholars consult to understand the “spiritual but not religious” tendency as a recurring theme in Western culture from antiquity to the present.

Michael Horton is J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California.

“Michael Horton illuminates our contemporary spiritual restlessness by examining its earliest roots in Western antiquity. Certain to become the authoritative history of our ageold quest to encounter ‘the divine self,’ Shaman and Sage explains how the most creative moments in our collective spiritual journeys did not come through contrite obedience to a power ruling from above. They emerged instead from the hunger to experience a power pulsing from within.”

Divine Generosity

The Scope of Salvation in Reformed Theology

A brief, accessible inquiry into the wideness of God’s mercy in Reformed theology

978-0-8028-8390-2

How broad is the scope of salvation? To explore this topic, Richard J. Mouw draws on Scripture and a rich heritage of Calvinist theology. Mouw explains how Christians can affirm God’s justice while holding hope for the wideness of his saving mercy. For Reformed pastors, Divine Generosity serves as a biblically based, doctrinally sound guide to pressing questions about salvation.

Richard J. Mouw is the former president of Fuller Theological Seminary and former director of the Institute of Faith and Public Life. He has authored over twenty books and served as an editor of Reformed Journal.

“Will there be few who are saved? Richard Mouw opens the reader’s eyes to a Calvinism guided by a spirit of generosity. Or more precisely, to a God whose sovereignty and electing grace consist in a breathtaking salvific generosity.”

—Cornelis van der Kooi distinguished lecturer at Erasmus University, Rotterdam

“Here, as always, Mouw is thoughtful, gracious, and genuinely illuminating. He writes with an appealing reverence for God and respect for humanity. Warmly recommended!”

Gospel as Work of Art

Imaginative Truth and the Open Text

A lushly illustrated, exploration of the imaginative truth of the gospel

978-0-8028-8282-0

“In this beautifully illustrated and ambitious volume, David Brown convincingly argues that ‘reading’ the gospel through visual images indicates the inventive and imaginative nature of the gospel writers. Theologians, biblical historians, and art historians are challenged to consider this premise and rediscover the interconnectivity of word and image for today’s academic and Christian communities.”

J. Hornik, Baylor University

The legacy of the Enlightenment favors historical and empirical inquiry above all other methods for searching for truth. But this assumption constrains our theological explorations. Though the historicity of Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection is important, it is not the only thing that matters. David Brown challenges us to expand our understanding of the gospel past source criticism and historical Jesus studies to include works of imagination. Reading Scripture in tandem with works of art throughout the centuries, Brown reenvisions the gospel as an open text. Scholars of theology and biblical studies, freed from literalism, will find new avenues of revelation in Gospel as Work of Art. This volume includes over one hundred color illustrations.

David Brown FRSE, FBA is an Anglican priest and British scholar of philosophy, theology, religion, and the arts. He has taught at the universities of Oxford, Durham, and St. Andrews.

“This is a big book with big ideas . . . Anyone interested in Christian theology—in what it has been and what it might become—must ponder Brown’s wide-ranging, historically learned, beautifully illustrated, thoughtprovoking pages. Even the most erudite will find an education here.”

Esteemed ethicist Oliver O’Donovan discusses the future of his field in The Disappearance of Ethics. Based on the 2021 Gifford Lectures, this book contends that contemporary ethics has lost its object (good), frontier (time), and agent (person). To recover the heart of ethics, O’Donovan integrates theological concepts such as creation, divine law, and justification to generate “existential wonder.” With characteristic warmth and scholarly precision, O’Donovan reinvigorates ethical argument with theological insight. Scholars and students of Christian ethics will find his capstone lectures equal parts provocative and inspiring.

Oliver O’Donovan is a fellow of the British Academy and professor emeritus of Christian ethics and practical theology at the University of Edinburgh. His other books include The Desire of the Nations, The Ways of Judgment, and Resurrection and Moral Order

“Characteristically wise, perceptive and learned, Oliver O’Donovan’s Gifford Lectures make a powerful case for a renewal of moral deliberation and reasoning in our time. Generated in the midst of lockdown, his reflections make a persuasive case for an ethical vision that is both rooted in context and shaped by our theological traditions.”

A Christian Approach to Mental Health Care

A

Warren Kinghorn

Foreword by John Swinton

theologically and scientifically engaged

exploration of modern mental health care

As a theologian and practicing psychiatrist, Warren Kinghorn shares a Christian vision of accompanying those facing mental health challenges. Kinghorn reviews the successes and limitations of modern mental health care before offering an alternative paradigm of healing. Drawing on scientific evidence and the theology of Thomas Aquinas, Kinghorn reframes our understanding of mental health care from fixing machines to attending fellow wayfarers on the way to the Lord’s feast. With gentle guidance and practical suggestions, Wayfaring is an essential resource for pastors and practitioners as well as for Christians who seek mental health care.

Warren Kinghorn is a psychiatrist and theological ethicist whose work centers on the role of religious communities in caring for persons with mental health problems and on how Christians engage practices of modern health care. Jointly appointed to the faculties of Duke Divinity School and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences of Duke University Medical Center, he is codirector of the Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School and practices psychiatry at the Durham VA Medical Center.

Inclusivity and Institutional Change in Education

A Theologian’s Journey

Do you want to implement diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at your institution, but you don’t know where to start?

In this candid volume, Sr. Colleen Mary Mallon reflects on the challenges of implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at a predominantly white Catholic secondary school. In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, her school was forced to reckon with its complicity in white supremacy. She shares how educating faculty, staff, administrators, and parents in Catholic Social Teaching equipped them to bring their actions—and the culture of the school—into alignment with their professed values. With its wealth of practical insights and discussion questions, Inclusivity and Institutional Change in Education will guide readers in effecting cultural change in their own institutions.

Colleen Mary Mallon, OP is a theologian, educator, and animator of mission formation. She holds a PhD in systematic and philosophical theology from the Graduate Theological Union and has taught systematic theology at the university level. She currently serves as a director of adult mission formation for the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose.

Hospitality as a Christian Tradition Christine D. Pohl

Hospitality is crucial to Christian ministry

Featuring a new preface and afterword by the author, this revitalized edition of Making Room introduces the theology of hospitality to a new generation. Christine Pohl combines rich biblical and historical research with experience in Christian communities, including the Catholic Worker, L’Abri, Good Works, Inc., and others. Readers will find a wealth of wisdom to revive authentic hospitality in their ministry.

Christine D. Pohl (1950–2023) was professor emeritus of Christian ethics at Asbury Theological Seminary. She authored numerous articles and books, most notably Living into Community: Cultivating Practices That Sustain Us and (with Keith Wasserman) Good Works: Hospitality and Faithful Discipleship.

“In a time in which many scholarly works are both hastily written and of dubious significance, Christine Pohl’s fine work on hospitality is quite the opposite on both counts. It will stand as the benchmark work on this subject for a long time to come. This is a work in ethical archaeology. Pohl digs through the centuries’ layers and discovers hospitality as a way of living out the Gospel that was once central to Christian experience but for several centuries has been marginalized. She argues convincingly that the church needs to recover the practice of hospitality, not only because it meets the needs of the poor but also for the church’s own sake.”

Being Here

Prayers for Curiosity, Justice, and Love Pádraig Ó Tuama

“What is prayer? It’s not a passport to heaven. If anything, it’s a way of seeing here, a way of being here.”

In Being Here, Pádraig Ó Tuama shares 31 collects crafted to invite readers into deeper engagement with their world. Presented alongside Scripture and illuminating literary texts, this collection of prayers and essays provides spiritual wayfarers a place to both rest and grow their capacity for curiosity, justice, and love.

Pádraig Ó Tuama is an Irish poet and theologian best known for hosting the Poetry Unbound podcast from On Being. His recent books include Poetry Unbound: 50 Poems to Open Your World and Feed the Beast

“Pádraig’s prayers balance precision, spaciousness, heart, humor, doubt, and devotion in a way that feels at once impossible and also desperately needed. I am in love with his unsentimental orientation to the holy.”

—Nadia Bolz-Weber author of Accidental Saints

“Ó Tuama recalibrates the language of liturgy in a way that both contains and re-energizes ancient spiritual practices. Never have I been so grateful for—and enchanted with—the collect as a poetic form. I predict Being Here will become a classic of devotional literature.”

—Jamie Quatro author of Fire Sermon

Written in a graceful cadence that invites readers to turn these pages slowly, Beauty Is Oxygen weaves together theological reflection, poetry, cultural criticism, and Scripture. Throughout, Vander Lugt shows how beauty can break us out of self-centered malaise, promote healing and hope for our broken world, and reenchant our lives.

Wesley Vander Lugt teaches theology and directs the Leighton Ford Center for Theology, the Arts, and Gospel Witness at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has also served as lead pastor of Warehouse 242 in Charlotte and theologian in residence at First Presbyterian Church, Tulsa.

Holy Hell

A Case against Eternal Damnation Derek Ryan Kubilus

Derek Ryan Kubilus thinks most Christians have hell all wrong. Arguing that eternal torture is contrary to God’s nature, Kubilus offers an alternative understanding of hell—a temporary and holy rehabilitation, reconciling all creation in Christ. Instead of preaching fear, Kubilus shares a vision for a church that serves all people with compassion, wherever they are in their journey toward Christ.

Derek Ryan Kubilus is an ordained elder serving in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. He is also a member of the Order of Saint Luke and an amateur podcaster. He currently serves the First United Methodist Church of Ashland, Ohio.

“We keep needing to be reminded that, instead of the God we feared we had, Jesus Christ offers us the God we didn’t know, a God who seems determined not to rule in eternity without us. Pastor Kubilus does a wonderful job of helping us discover once again the God who, though we may deserve hellish punishment, loves us in Jesus Christ so that we might let ourselves be loved eternally. A wise, funny, pastoral, vibrantly good news book. Hell? No!”

Humility

Rediscovering the Way of Love and Life in Christ

Michael W. Austin Foreword by David P. Gushee

Amid culture wars and church division, Michael W. Austin calls us back to the authentic Way—following Christ in humility and love

Austin guides the reader through spiritual disciplines to aid in the formation of this virtue, from praying the Psalms to building healthy communities. For Christians seeking transformative union with God, in their souls and society, Humility is the ideal companion.

Michael W. Austin is professor of philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University and senior fellow of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Institute. He has published twelve books, most recently QAnon, Chaos, and the Cross: Christianity and Conspiracy Theories and God and Guns in America.

“Mike Austin’s Humility is about eternal things while very much in the present. Political polarization, social media fights, church hypocrisy—such current issues are tackled through recourse to ancient wisdom regarding humility and love. While humility and love are ‘often overlooked, undervalued, and even disregarded,’ Austin demonstrates their centrality to the Christian faith. They are cobelligerents in the up-and-down, rough-and-tumble process of becoming more Christlike, Austin points out; Jesus showed us ‘the Way’ in his own life, death, and resurrection. Readers frustrated with our current cultural and political climate will find much to gain by reading Humility. It would also be an excellent choice for small groups and book clubs.”

Restorative Hope

Creating Pathways of Connection in Women’s Prisons

How theological education can engender life-giving hope for incarcerated women

Sarah F. Farmer amplifies the voices of incarcerated women as they strive for hope and agency. Incorporating artistic expression and awareness of justice, she shows how theological education can help cultivate the resilience and connection that women describe as life-giving in and after prison. Educators and theologians seeking to serve those in prison will find a wealth of firsthand perspectives and practical resources in these pages.

Sarah F. Farmer is associate director at the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Prior to that, she served as associate professor of community development and practical theology at Indiana Wesleyan University. As a practical theologian, she teaches classes in community development, faith formation, youth ministry, and transformative pedagogy. Her courses connect with local nonprofits to encourage students to serve their community.

“Restorative Hope is an unparalleled treatment of the complicated and often harsh and hopeless realities of women in and returning from prisons. Farmer carefully and critically holds together rigorous scholarly engagement and the stories of the women she interviewed. She invites all of us to hope as she centers these women’s images of hope and resilience even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds and structures that were designed to render them hopeless.”

Cultural Sanctification

Engaging the World like the Early Church

How to keep faith in a culture hostile to Christianity

Stephen O. Presley shows us how to keep faith in a secular culture, using the early church as a model. Amid a pagan culture that regarded their faith with suspicion, early Christians founded a religious movement that transformed the ancient world. By following in their footsteps, we can sanctify our world through social witness.

Stephen O. Presley is senior fellow for religion and public life at the Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy and associate professor of church history at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is also the author of The Intertextual Reception of Genesis 1–3 in Irenaeus of Lyons as well as numerous articles and essays that look to retrieve ancient wisdom for modern Christians.

“Presley helps us see an attractive, godly, and productive way forward that provides a strong remedy for the bitterness and discouragement many Christians feel today as they survey their cultural landscape.”

VanDrunen Westminster Seminary California

“Erudite but clearly and engagingly written, Cultural Sanctification is informative, insightful, even inspiring, and it culminates in the Christian virtue so desperately needed today—hope.”

The Concept of Woman

A Synthesis in One Volume

Sister Prudence Allen, RSM

Foreword by John C. Cavadini

A comprehensive account of women in Western thought, from ancient Greece, through the Middle Ages, to today

Surveying philosophers and theologians from ancient Greece to today, Sister Prudence Allen traces the development of integral gender complementarity—a doctrine that affirms the equal dignity of men and women and the synergetic relationship between them. This synthesis of her three-volume magnum opus is the ideal textbook for classes on gender in Catholic thought.

Sister Prudence Allen, RSM is a retired professor of philosophy at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary, Denver, Colorado and professor emerita at Concordia University, Montreal. She is the author of The Concept of Woman, published in three volumes: The Aristotelian Revolution, 750 BC–AD 1250; The Early Humanist Reformation, 1250–1500; The Search for Communion of Persons, 1500–2015

This Is Going to Hurt

Following Jesus in a Divided America

Bekah McNeel Foreword by Frank Schaeffer

“If you see me at a party and I’m speaking, you need to come rescue the person I’m talking to, because they are not having a good time. Or better yet, I would like to invite you, the reader, into the corner with me to talk about the story I write over and over again: People are suffering.”

Bekah McNeel analyzes the narratives surrounding six hot-button issues—immigration, COVID, abortion, critical race theory, gun violence, and climate change. For each topic, she exposes how “us versus them” thinking leads us to turn a blind eye to injustice. She also offers an alternative perspective on each issue, based on a sensitive reading of the gospel. Humorous and insightful, This Is Going to Hurt offers a breath of fresh air for readers seeking a nuanced and authentically Christian mode of political engagement.

Bekah McNeel is a journalist, wife, and mother of two. Her work has appeared in Christianity Today, Sojourners, Relevant, The Texas Tribune, ESPN’s The Undefeated, The Christian Science Monitor, Texas Public Radio, and elsewhere. In addition to pieces about parenting, she writes about education, immigration, and faith communities as well as the occasional op-ed calling the American evangelical church to lay down its idols of White supremacy and patriarchy.

Ministers of Propaganda

Truth, Power, and the Ideology of the Religious Right

Scott Coley exposes the inner working of the religious right’s propaganda—and how Christians can resist it

JUNE 2024

978-0-8028-8281-3 • 272 Pages • Hardcover $26.99 US • $35.99 CAN • £21.99 UK

Scott Coley trains a critical eye on the fusion of evangelicalism and right-wing politics in Ministers of Propaganda. This timely volume unravels the propaganda and biblical prooftexting that support Christo-authoritarianism: an ideology that presses Christian theology into the service of authoritarian politics. Coley’s historically informed argument shows how the orthodoxy of the religious right is not as unchanging as its leaders would have us believe—and he explains how Christian love of neighbor can rob the propaganda of its power.

Scott M. Coley is a lecturer in philosophy at Mount St. Mary’s University. His research interests include philosophy of religion, moral epistemology, and political philosophy.

“Bringing a philosophical scalpel to evangelical truth claims, Scott Coley demonstrates with devastating precision how much of what passes as ‘biblical’ can better be understood as propaganda, as the deliberate obfuscation of reality in the interest of propping up self-serving hierarchies of authority and submission. Witty, hard-hitting, and engaging, this book is for those already alarmed by evangelicals’ authoritarian proclivities, but also for evangelicals themselves, for those genuinely invested in pursuing what is good and true.”

This groundbreaking book encourages church leaders to let go of nostalgia for old ecclesiological norms and embrace something new, inclusive, and authentic.

Rebirth of a Nation

Reparations and Remaking America

Joel Edward Goza Foreword by William J. Barber II

Joel Edward Goza dismantles the deep-seated myths that perpetuate white supremacy—and makes the case that reparations are necessary to heal America’s racial wounds and live up to our democratic ideals

In Rebirth of a Nation, Joel Edward Goza makes the case that reparations are necessary to realize racial justice and restore our democracy. In a narrative-driven historical survey, Goza exposes lesser-known aspects of our racist past, drawing a clear line from slavery to Jim Crow to the destruction of Black lives today. But Rebirth of a Nation is not merely about accountability. It is also about hope. Goza shows that by embracing a process of reparations and the wisdom of the Black Freedom Movement, we can place the United States on a path of healing.

Joel Edward Goza is a writer, speaker, and community advocate. He is professor of ethics at the HBCU Simmons College and teaches in Kentucky prisons. Before focusing on writing and teaching, Joel worked in urban redevelopment and community activism for over a decade in Houston’s Fifth Ward. He is also the author of America’s Unholy Ghosts: The Racist Roots of Our Faith and Politics and contributes to The Hill, Salon, and Religion News Service

Another Gospel

Christian Nationalism and the Crisis of Evangelical Identity

Joel Looper

Joel Looper offers his fellow evangelicals a theological rationale for resisting Christian nationalism

Though evangelicals emphasize fidelity to the gospel above all else, many have fallen in step with a “different gospel”—that of Christian nationalism. Analyzing Scripture, church history, and current events in the United States and Russia, Joel Looper argues that the nation has supplanted the church as evangelicals’ primary allegiance. He also shows how we can revive the traditional Christian vision of community, drawn together by the Holy Spirit. Thoughtful and balanced, Another Gospel offers readers a way out of the rut of a well-worn argument—and a way forward for the American church.

Joel Looper teaches at Baylor University and serves as coordinator for Shalom Mission Communities, a network of international Christian communities. He is also the author of Bonhoeffer’s America: A Land without Reformation

American Christian Nationalism

Neither American nor Christian

Michael W. Austin Foreword by Marlena Graves

Michael W. Austin shows how nationalism is contrary to American values and Christian virtues— and offers us a better form of civic engagement

In this brief, thought-provoking book, Michael W. Austin turns his keen mind for ethics toward the crisis currently facing our democracy: the rise of American Christian nationalism. Austin first accessibly explains the meaning and history behind nationalism. He then systematically shows how the ideology contradicts American values like liberty, equality, and justice as well as Christian virtues like humility, faith, hope, and love. Ultimately, he argues that the Beloved Community, first developed by Martin Luther King Jr. and others, offers a better model for an authentically Christian and American community. Readers frustrated by partisan discord will find a faithful guide in Austin’s thoughtful volume.

Michael W. Austin is Foundation Professor of Philosophy at Eastern Kentucky University and Bonhoeffer Senior Fellow of the Miller Center for Interreligious Learning and Leadership of Hebrew College. He has published twelve books, including Being Good: Christian Virtues for Everyday Life, Humility and Human Flourishing, and his latest, God and Guns in America

A Memoir of Breaking Away from Christian Patriachy Cait West

A gripping memoir about coming of age in the stay-at-home daughter movement and the quest to piece together a future on your own terms.

In Rift, Cait West tells a harrowing story of chaos and control hidden beneath the facade of a happy family. Weaving together lyrical meditations on the geology of the places her family lived with her story of spiritual and emotional manipulation as a stayat-home daughter, West creates a stirring portrait of one young woman’s growing awareness that she is experiencing abuse. With the ground shifting beneath her feet, West mustered the courage to break free from all she’d ever known and choose a future of her own making. A remarkable literary debut, Rift offers a personal perspective on the fraught legacy of purity culture and recent reckonings with abuse in Christian communities.

Cait West is a writer and editor based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Her work has been published in The Revealer, Religion Dispatches, Fourth Genre, and Hawai‘i Pacific Review, among others. She serves on the editorial board for Tears of Eden, a nonprofit providing resources for survivors of spiritual abuse.

“In this beautifully crafted memoir, Cait West offers readers an intimate glimpse into growing up and coming of age in a world defined by Christian patriarchy. Written with unusual sensitivity and unflinching honesty, hers is a story of aching loss and gritty resilience, of brokenness, beauty, and hope.”

—Kristin Kobes Du Mez, New York Times bestselling author of Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation

“In Rift, Cait West has given us a rare gift: a chance to see behind the curtain of the Christian patriarchy movement’s smiling faces and witness the personal devastation the movement has wrought in the lives of so many young people, especially girls. This is a harrowing yet deeply necessary book about a family’s descent into radicalization— and West is a skilled narrator and courageous guide.”

—Ryan Stollar, author of The Kingdom of Children: A Liberation Theology

Jingjiao

The Earliest Christian Church in China

Glen L. Thompson Foreword by Samuel N. C. Lieu

A balanced, accessible, and thorough history of Jingjiao, the first Christian church in China

Glen L. Thompson introduces readers to the fascinating history of Jingjiao, the first Christian church in China, planted by Persian missionaries traveling the Silk Road. Thompson covers the church’s flourishing during the Tang dynasty, its twelfth- to fourteenthcentury revival, and its controversial modern rediscovery. As the most up-to-date and balanced survey on the topic available in English, Jingjiao will be an indispensable resource for students of global Christianity and missiology.

Glen L. Thompson is professor emeritus of New Testament and historical theology at Asia Lutheran Seminary in Hong Kong. He has retired to Milwaukee, where he researches, works with students, and expands his Fourth-Century Christianity website.

“ When and how exactly did Christianity reach China? Was it really brought by Western imperialists or opium sellers? What and how do Jingjiao (Luminous Teaching) and the Syriac-speaking church contribute to Chinese Christianity? In this volume, church historian Dr. Glen Thompson offers a fascinating narrative that uncovers an important piece of history, addressing these questions and providing a corrective to frequent misunderstandings of the origin of Christianity in China.”

Reviving the Ancient Faith

third edition

The Story of Churches of Christ in America

Richard T. Hughes and James L. Gorman

A balanced, well-documented history of the Churches of Christ in America

James L. Gorman’s fresh edition of Richard T. Hughes’s classic work, Reviving the Ancient Faith, illuminates the Church of Christ movement started by Barton Stone and Alexander Campbell in the nineteenth century. The Churches of Christ are best known for their attempt to restore a primitive and nondenominational Christianity. The authors trace the movement’s sociological transformation into a denomination from the 1830s into the twentieth century. Balanced and well-documented, Reviving the Ancient Faith is the perfect textbook for classes on the history of the Churches of Christ.

Richard T. Hughes is scholar in residence at Lipscomb University. He is the author of several books, including Myths America Lives By: White Supremacy and the Stories That Give Us Meaning and The Churches of Christ: Student Edition

James L. Gorman is associate professor of history at Johnson University in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is also the author of Among the Early Evangelicals: Transatlantic Origins of the Stone-Campbell Movement

Machen’s Hope

The Transformation of a Modernist in the New Princeton

Richard E. Burnett

Foreword by Mark A. Noll

The first critical biography of J. Gresham Machen, examining the full arc of his intellectual career

J. Gresham Machen is known as a conservative hero of the fundamentalist-modernist controversy. But was he always so staunchly antimodernist? Richard E. Burnett examines Machen’s life and career, focusing on the intellectual formation of his first forty years rather than the struggles and achievements of his last fifteen years. Burnett’s nuanced narrative of Machen’s intellectual arc will challenge scholars’ assumptions about Machen and his era.

Richard E. Burnett is executive director and managing editor of Theology Matters. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and was formerly professor of systematic theology at Erskine Theological Seminary. His previous books include Karl Barth's Theological Exegesis: The Hermeneutical Principles of the Römerbrief Period
