Eerdmans Books for Young Readers Fall 2024 Catalog

Page 1

Dear reader,

I’m delighted to share EBYR’s Fall 2024 list with you!! A small yet wide-ranging collection, this season features the 10th anniversary of a YA favorite, the launch of a new science series, hilarious poetry from our 2024 Batchelder Honor-winner Bette Westera, and a much-anticipated follow-up to Anna Desnitskaya’s On the Edge of the World

Kingdoms of Life is the frontlist star of our new “Spectacular STEAM for Curious Readers” series and a vibrantly illustrated look at the ways scientists classify organisms on Earth. And if you want a more light-hearted, whimsical take on the animal kingdom, check out Bette Westera’s Fast Cheetah, Slow Tortoise, a delightful collection of poems featuring animal opposites.

There’s a good chance you’re reading this catalog during a hot summer month. But once the days get shorter and colder, and you want a cozy, wintery book to curl up with—we’ve got you covered. Discover a charming set of Arctic animals in Nancy White Carlstrom and Claudia McGehee’s Counting Winter, then explore fresh horizons and make a few unexpected friends along with the characters in The Most Beautiful Winter and Hiro, Winter, and Marshmallows

A couple of this season’s books have me musing on the joy that can come when we give up a bit of control and revel in others’ perspectives. Goat and Bunny in It Is Okay are very different from each other—yet they delight in their friendship. And when the narrator of The Cat Way agrees to let their cat lead the way, they discover a whole world bursting with surprise and wonder.

Lastly, author-illustrator Anna Desnitskaya’s A Star Shines Through tells the spare, moving story of a family forced to flee their country and use art to craft a new home in a place that initially feels nothing but cold and foreign. Based on the author’s real-life experiences, this book beautifully and honestly captures what it looks like to find light in a difficult world.

I hope that you’ll take the chance to discover the joy, the wonder, the warmth, and the humor in this latest list of titles from our imprint. We are deeply grateful to publish books from extraordinary, unique creators around the world, and we are just as grateful to YOU—all of the readers who find these books, fall in love with them, and share them with your customers, students, patrons, and friends.

Sincerely,

A Star Shines Through

A poignant story about a displaced family making a home in the aftermath of war

We used to live in a big city. In our apartment window was a star-shaped lamp, shining through the cold. I could recognize home from far away. But then the war began, and we left for another country. Everything is different here—the food, the language, even Mom and me. Today Mom bought us a package of scissors, glue, and cardboard. Can we make this place feel a little more like home?

Narrated by a young refugee, A Star Shines Through illustrates the long process of healing with an evocative palette of blues and yellows. This resonant book shows how making art can create a sense of hope and belonging, even in a new and different place.

An unconventional story about navigating differences and learning to be present

When a cat and her human go for walks, the human always decides where they go and what they do. “But what if it were the other way around?” the cat asks one day. So the next time, the human follows the cat. When the cat is in control, she wants to stop more often, and she wants to chase squirrels and climb up trees. Her human finds all these detours ridiculous. But when you walk at a cat’s pace, you can see the most amazing things.

Painted in richly saturated colors, The Cat Way explores the strange path to compromise and cooperation. Walking together might take some patience—but it can also lead to the most incredible surprises.

A compelling novel-in-verse about mental illness, family relationships, and the power of art

In 1960s Oregon, fifteen-year-old Laura just wants a quiet, regular life: drawing in her sketchbook, hanging out with her best friend, maybe going on a date with Dennis from school. But Laura has a secret—her mother is mentally ill. When Mother has a breakdown, Laura’s confusion and anger start to build. What if art can’t keep her safe from becoming like her mother? What if Laura’s life will never be close to normal?
