Host with the most:

New industrial wedding venue, events space open

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

HIGHLAND — A venue for romantics of all kinds gives all kinds of options for any event or party, especially weddings and receptions. The Olde Wicks Factory Special Event Center has a place for history lovers and couples within its 80,000 square feet and eight acres of outdoor space. Highland, Illinois’ former organ manufacturing center retains its historic characteristics, many of which are incorporated into the interior design, to create an incredible industrial wedding venue. Olde Wicks’ building is more than 100 years old and features beautiful stained glass, large rooms and rich exposed brick, as well as lovely outdoor spaces on an expansive property. The organ company formerly housed here built more than 6,500 individually handcrafted organs from 1905 to 2011. Olde Wicks Factory hosted its first wedding ceremony in the West Hall (formerly the mill room) for Hannah and Tyler Isaak, of Breese, Illinois, on Dec. 1, 2018. The couple loved the venue so much that they brought their wedding party in last June to help get Olde Wicks’ West Hall ready for the big day. Olde Wicks Factory’s owner Jennifer Ostrander hadn’t expected to be able to host a wedding event until June of this year. “They’re the reason we got ahead of schedule,” said Ostrander, of Highland, who operates Olde Wicks Factory with her daughter, Shannon Ostrander; the pair, along with Jennifer’s husband, Frank, oversee and do most of the historic building’s renovation. The Isaaks’ wedding party helped remove chicken wire and asphalt from the former 4,500-square-foot organ company’s mill room, which became West Hall. Underneath, the West Hall’s floor was revealed, constructed of gorgeous two-inch-thick tongue-and-groove hardwood pine dating to 1938. The Ostranders sealed the floor with tung oil to give it a naturally muted reddish finish and also exposed the hall’s beams, which were hidden by tile and insulation. In the same hall, a 2,500-square-foot concrete dance floor is perfect for the “Electric Slide,” a four-wall line dance set to Marcia Griffiths and Bunny Wailer’s song “Electric Boogie,”or the “Chicken Dance,” as well as the latest beats from whatever music a couple desires, either from a live band or a deejay. Radiant heat keeps everything cozy on the dance floor, but the hall has two brand new air-conditioning systems, as well as a pair of brand new heating units.

An L-shaped bar is expected to be completely built and available for use by April 27 in the West Hall. Ostrander is awaiting Olde Wicks’ liquor license, for which she’s already applied. Ostrander will order the bar’s inventory from distributors; outside alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from being brought in. Formerly the Pipe Organ Co. showroom, the Stained Glass Hall serves as a venue for indoor wedding ceremonies. The venuewithin-the-venue was used to showcase the organs that church leaders from around the world came to see and hear before the final purchase. The hall’s acoustics is that of a church, with vaulted ceilings, parameters and specifications for the purpose of displaying the instrument’s sound. “It’s meant to sound like a church,” Ostrander noted. The current Stained Glass Hall still retains its vintage 1962 cinder block wall with inset stained glass blocks. Ostrander purposely bought and supplies white decorative folding chairs with white acrylic seat padding. Stained Glass Hall seats up to 150 guests comfortably for a ceremony, or 120 for a seated meal. The same chairs can be set up in Olde Wicks’ West Hall or, upon request, (10) 12-foot solid oak church pews are available to rent. Most of the 49 wedding events currently booked at Olde Wicks are scheduled for its outside venue, the vast North Patio, covered by a canopy of 80-year-old pin oaks. The shade trees keep it cool even in July and August, when The Olde Wicks has outdoor weddings planned. But the back-up options are just as beautiful, either in the Stained Glass Hall or the West Hall, in case of inclement weather. Ostrander gives a 24-hour notice if rain is predicted at the time of an outdoor wedding. Since June 2011, Ostrander has owned and operated Core Elite Tumble & Cheer, a gymnastics studio where several high school tumbling teams practice, including the current three-time state tumbling champs, Breese Central. Ostrander purchased The Olde Wicks’ building in August of 2017. “We’ve been described as accommodating from cradle to bridal because our tumbling classes start at eighteen months old. We bought the Wicks building with the intention of using 20,000 square feet for Core Elite and had 60,000 more square feet to decide what to do with,” Ostrander recalled. Olde Wicks’ other amenities include a bride’s suite; a bridal party suite; and, a groom’s suite, complete with a poker table, See HOST, Page 8

HOST Continued from Page 7 pub table and large flat-screen television. Each suite has its own entrance and adjacent parking. The oversized bride’s suite allows plenty of room for displaying and changing into gorgeous gowns with layers of lace, expansive trains and long veils. “Our whole goal is for brides and their parties to get here in the morning and not have to leave until the festivities are over, at 11 p.m. or later,” Ostrander said. The large bridal party suite has five stations for getting hair and makeup ready. Each individual can bring their own stylists or book with Face It’s Britni Diesen, who has her studio onsite in Olde Wicks’ building, where Diesen leases space. Face It is among a total of six businesses in the building, which has become an incubator for four woman-owned entities separate from Ostrander’s special event center and gymnastics business. The bridal party suite has a coffee/ mimosa bar, seats 20 people comfortably and has a spacious marble table that seats eight. There’s plenty of room for moms, grandmothers and a whole group to have a continental breakfast or snacks. Pancho3 Photography documented the Isaaks’ activities at The Olde Wicks Factory, from groom Tyler Isaak hanging out with his guys at their house in the morning to Hannah and her girls getting ready in the bridal suites and then attending the wedding ceremony. The Olde Wicks collaborated with Pancho3 Photography for weddings, although couples can hire their own photographer and videographer. Following the ceremony, Pancho3 captured some portraits in the West Hall, as well as outside with a vintage truck that’s been an Isaak family treasure for many decades. The additional businesses that lease space at The Olde Wicks Factory include The Highland Music School, with owner Angelina McLaughlinHeil, who is a member of the Landolfi String Quartet, voted “Best of the Best” by The Knot magazine; the Heather Pearson Photography studio; and, the 5,000-square-foot Innovative Movement Dance Co., owned by Christy Fisher. Construction of a catering kitchen

For The Edge Olde Wicks’ Stained Glass Hall, a venue for indoor wedding ceremonies, was the original showroom for Pipe Organ Co.’s clients. The venue used to serve to showcase the organs that church leaders from around the world came to see and hear before the final purchase. Stained Glass Hall still retains its vintage 1962 cinder block wall with inset stained glass blocks. is underway, expected to be complete and available this spring. The kitchen will have warming ovens for prepared foods only. The Olde Wicks Factory allows for outside caterers as long as they are licensed and insured, and has hosted events, not just weddings, with a taco bar, pizza food truck and barbecue. The Olde Wicks Factory does not provide catering, decorations or linens, but linens can be rented from Highland’s It’s Party Time, owned by Sue Chasteen. Ostrander’s future phases for Olde Wicks Factory Special Event Center include creating a Grand Hall, in the former organ company’s 1910 original workshop, with a cocktail reception hall for appetizers and drinks served in between ceremonies and receptions so that guests can remain at the venue, instead of driving somewhere else to kill time between wedding day events; and, another set of groom’s and bride’s suites, to potentially hold two events at the same time. The Olde Wicks Factory will be available at Modern Love Wedding Expo: An All Inclusive Wedding Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at Meridian Ballroom, on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The expo is free to attend.

Grandview Hills offers country-setting in Edwardsville school district New Fulford Homes community expected summer completion

A Fulford Homes LLC home prototype shown here. Fulford Homes, founded by Mark Fulford, expects Grandview Hills to be complete by this summer. All but 18 of the new community’s 82 home sites are in the Edwardsville school district, while the 18 are situated in the Roxana school district. The new Fulford Homes community is located on S. Moreland Road at Edwardsville Road and Illinois Route 143. By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com WOOD RIVER — From the award-winning developers who sold out Rock Hill Trails subdivision, in the Edwardsville school district, comes a new subdivision with new homes in the same district. Fulford Homes, founded by Mark Fulford, expects Grandview Hills to be open for sales by this summer. All but 18 of the new community’s 82 home sites are in the Edwardsville school district, while the 18 are situated in the Roxana school district. The new Fulford Homes community is located on S. Moreland Road at Edwardsville Road and Illinois Route 143. “This is a great location that’s a short drive

to Downtown Edwardsville, Wood River, and easy access to Interstate 255,” Fulford Homes President Matt Lanter exclusively told Metro East House Hunters. Since 1975, Fulford Homes, a Southwestern Illinois builder for 40-plus year, has been providing well-crafted homes in some of the fastest growing areas in Illinois. Always providing distinctive communities, exterior and interior craftsmanship, a commitment to outstanding service from sales through warranty, Fulford Homes seeks to continually meet and exceed customer expectations. “The entry monuments of a Fulford Homes community represents the best of living in the region. We take pride in the fact that we helped shape the growth of Southwestern Illinois,” Lanter said. Grandview Hills has several large common

ground areas that will provide ample green space, for a country setting close and convenient to premier urban centers. The new community will be located about one mile away from Rock Hill Trails. “This community will be unique in that there is rolling terrain so there will be many walkout lots and many lots will have treelined rear yards,” Lanter said. All homes will be served by city water and sewer and have electric and natural gas, with the average lot size at approximately 14,500 square feet, or one-third of one acre. FULFORD Continued from Page 14 will offer several different elevations including craftsman, traditional and old world. “With three to four different elevations, it gives the subdivision some charactor and plans can be modified,” Lanter said. Fulford Homes’ longterm plan includes a second phase for Grandview Hills expected to be completed by early 2021. The first phase of the subdivision started to be deveolped 10 years ago, which Fulford Homes rescued from foreclosure. It also finished the Rock Hill Trails development, with plans to go back to finish a second phase of that development. “A different developer fell on hard times, there were only three homes built there when we bought it and finished it out,” Lanter explained. Fulford Homes serves the communities of Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Hamel, Worden, Midway, Moro, Dorsey and Prairietown. Edwardsville was named number 13 of “25 American Suburbs with the Best Value” by Business Insider in 2014. Private tours of Grandview Hills will be available. Participation in and education through the Home Builders Associations of Greater Southwest Illinois, St. Louis, the state of Illinois, and the National Association of Home Builders has put Fulford Homes in the forefront of the industry. As one of the oldest and largest homebuilders in the area, Fulford Homes understands the needs and wants of the market. Innovations in community design, products to improve new homes from wall-to-wall, foundation-to-roof, Fulford Homes bring experience and passion to build homes as buyers would want. Fulford Homes is committed to providing a variety of high-quality homes packed with unbeatable value, which is why the developer has been described as the region’s “most trusted name in home building” for more than three decades. Fulford Homes is an award-winning home builder and real estate developer, with houses that also can be found in Illinois near or in O’Fallon; Shiloh; Swansea; Scott Air Force Base; Godfrey; and, Belleville. They customize their home plans to fit individual and families’ personal needs. “We welcome realtor participation and work closely with the Realtor Association of Southwest Illinois and Greater Gateway Realtor Association,” Lanter said. “We are also active members of the Home Builders Association of St. Louis and the Home Builders Association of Greater Southwestern Illinois.” Fulford Homes has new homes to suit all types of families and lifestyles. Professional organizers can help get your home or office in order.

Let a professional help organize life

Many people routinely find themselves confronted with situations that could be made simpler if they were just a little more organized. Whether it’s lost keys, cramped cabinets or misplaced documents, minor yet inconvenient situations can be mitigated if not eliminated if men and women simply commit to being more organized. Men and women who struggle with organization may be surprised to learn just how much time and productivity they lose to disorganization. For example, a survey from Ikea found that men and women routinely spend six minutes just looking for their keys. When added up, that’s a substantial amount of time that can be put to better use. Becoming more organized is a popular resolution come New Year ’s Day, and many people benefit from hiring professional organizers to make their resolutions a reality. Professional organizers can help men and women reduce clutter in their homes

and offices and regain control over their surroundings. Such professionals also can help solve organization problems, and that can help men and women reduce stress. Professional organizers know which strategies work, but men and women should know that not all organizers are the same. Some organizers may work as a hobby or be part of a larger cleaning company, while others are certified in organization. When searching for an organizer, determine if he or she belongs to the National Association of Professional Organizers and/or if an organizer has been certified by the Board of Certification for Professional Organizers¨. While certification may not be necessary to help you organize your home or business, certified organizers may have more experience. Organizers may specialize in certain areas. Some deal with corporate and business organization, while others help with real estate staging. Look for one who has experience working with people of

your ilk. Organizers will want to examine clients’ situations before they develop a plan of action. Therefore, do not feel the need to prepare for the organizer’s arrival by cleaning up, as doing so may only mask the problems you’re having. The organizer will walk through your home or business and assess your needs. Many organizers will suggest you work with them to learn organizational strategies that you can implement on your own so you remain organized for years to come. Check with the organizer to see what type of packages he or she offers. Some packages may be detailed, while others may just provide a foundation for you to become more organized. Getting organized is more than just having a clean space. It’s about taking control of your environment and improving your quality of life. P ro f e s s i o n a l o rg a n i z e r s c a n h e l p accomplish that goal and keep you organized for years to come.

Destination weddings have become a more economical choice for couples interested in sharing their day with a few select guests. Imagine saying “I do” on a white-sand beach with a handful of your closest friends looking on. If a destination wedding sounds like your kind of paradise, Ambassador is the place to start. Ambassador Travel and Cruise is operating in a store-front office located in downtown Belleville since 1974. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and evening hours by appointment for honeymoons and destination weddings. Crunk and her staff - Karen Furlow, Toni Crunk and Rachael Chappell - work inside the store and have many independent contractors that work out of their home. Always looking to add to the staff, give Crunk a call if interested. A member of the staff will sit with the couple in the quiet of their office and discuss different ideas. “We recommend reserving as soon as possible,” she said. “Then, we monitor your booking and if your price goes down, and you have purchased insurance, you get the lower rate.” Ambassador also offers a no-fee payment plan so payments can be made up until the balance needs to be paid, thus making it more feasible to reserve early and lock in the air and resort you want! Discounts are also given to friends/families (minimum five rooms, 10 guests) who want to travel with the bride and groom to celebrate the wedding. With a wide variety of destination resorts available combined with over 44 years of experience, they personally know the resorts that offer free or discounted weddings, and the rules and regulations necessary for the perfect event. All of Ambassador’s agents travel to many destinations and learn about the best resorts and areas to send brides and grooms. Over the years, they have developed relationships with key personnel at these resorts. In fact, check out their list of expertise: Certified Sandals Specialist, AM Resorts (Secrets, Now, Dreams and Breathless) Master Agent, Riu Resort Specialist, Karisma Resort Gourmet Inclusive Honeymoon Specialist (El Dorado and Azul resorts), Iberostar Specialist and a Disney Ear Marked Agency. They also win awards every year for outstanding sales with Apple and Funjet Vacations, and Master Cruise Specialists.

Honeymoon Registry

The honeymoon is always the first plan to make when getting married and with that comes the fun of registering at various businesses for gift giving. Think how fantastic it would be to register the honeymoon? Once honeymoon plans are finalized, Ambassador Travel offers an opportunity to register the honeymoon where friends and family can purchase honeymoon certificates as their gift! These certificates can be used to purchase tours, non-stop transfers, romantic dinners on the beach, spa treatments or just to help pay on the balance. “We are honeymoon specialists!” she said. ontact Ambassador Travel and Cruise at (618) 234-1046 or visit our website www.4ambassadortravel.com. Ambassador Travel and Cruise also provides the best in family vacations, adult-only resorts, all cruises, world-wide tours as well as small and large group trips. Belleville’s Grimm & Gorly designer returns to Art in Bloom

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

ST. LOUIS — Floral designers, including Grimm & Gorly’s Zach Bair, of Belleville, and garden club members will create imaginative displays celebrating works of art in the Saint Louis Art Museum galleries during one of the museum’s most popular programs. Bair is creating a floral design interpreting a painting owned by the Saint Louis Art Museum. “Designing everyday is an opportunity in and of itself, but when selected to design at the Saint Louis Art Museum the opportunity is above and beyond,” Bair, 31, said to The Edge. “We blindly choose, out of selected art work, and each year it has been a delightful challenge.” This will be Bair’s third consecutive year to design for Art In Bloom. “This year has been a push for me — my selected art is a stunning captured moment of intense hues in their simplest form,” Bair explained. “I am thrilled to be in the running with the incredible lineup of artists and floral

Double dip movie viewing features the romantic, rugged

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist I found myself at a ponderous crossroads last week. Should I sneak away to a showing of the new hit rom-com and whet my readers’ appetites for a little Valentine’s Day movie magic? Or, must my eye remain on the (Oscar) quest (2018) at hand and the 13 movies I have left (including five short films) to see before the Oscars last Sunday? There was no losing proposition — I did both. Netflix hosts a title called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and it has three nominations. It’s a bizarre little nugget. For a “date night,” “Isn’t It Romantic” is a perfect option. It’s a cheeky spoof of the romantic comedy film genre and one that subverts many of the conventions that make such a movie so warmly beloved. It also uses those same tropes to be very funny in and of itself. A plucky Australian architect in NYC (Rebel Wilson’s Natalie) finds herself the victim of a mugging on a subway platform and her subsequent head trauma causes her to hallucinate that she lives in a showy, pastel version of Brooklyn that reminds her of her favorite childhood movies, such as “Pretty Woman.” She’s not out looking for love, but finds herself living out a fantasy of being cute-clumsy, having every handsome guy fall for her (including Liam Hemsworth’s character, previously a loutish client) and in settings that are always bright, sunny, and cheerful. Also, everything is elegantly designed, there is no crime, and her friend set is unaware that they’re being enlisted into stock roles. Adam Devine plays a colleague who likes Natalie, but can’t get out the words to tell her. Betty Gilpin plays her movieobsessed assistant until she becomes a catty workplace enemy. Brandon Scott Jones is cast as the “gay best friend” and he throws out a stereotypical flamboyant performance. I read recently a great article about last summer’s hit “Crazy Rich Asians” that, until its breakthrough at the box office, illustrated that the 10 highest-grossing romantic comedies of all time were released between 1997-2009. That somewhat dates this particular rom-com type of movie to days gone by, but also remember what great movies were out at theaters during those years: “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Notting Hill,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Runaway Bride,” “13 Going On 30,” “27 Dresses,” “It’s Complicated.” At what point do I stop gushing? We might claim a more serious tone in our lives these days, but men and women both want love. So, isn’t it nice to see a movie that reminds us that it’s OK to love being in love?

(Michael Parmelee/Warner Bros. Pictures via AP)|For The Edge This image released by Warner Bros. Pictures shows Liam Hemsworth, from left, Rebel Wilson and Adam Devine in a scene from “Isn’t It Romantic.” Yes! I just hope I one day can recall enjoying “Isn’t It Romantic” for more than its terrific full cast karaoke rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).” It’s a show-stopping number in a movie that packs a few of those into its small frame. “Isn’t It Romantic” runs 88 minutes and is rated PG-13 for language, some sexual material and a brief drug reference. I give this film

three stars out of four. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” is a Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) anthology film of six Western-themed vignettes revolving around themes that the filmmakers have always embraced: the weird, the quirky and constantly the ultra-violent. Coen bros’ regular performer Tim Blake Nelson is the titular Buster, but other A-list names anchor the cast, including James Franco and Liam Neeson.

My vignette favorites were “The Gal Who Got Rattled,” with Zoe Kazan as a woman alone on a wagon train to Oregon and “All Gold Canyon,” about a grizzled prospector (played by a swell Tom Waits) defending his stake and doing a lot of talking to himself. Stream this one today on Netflix. “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” runs 133 minutes and is rated R for some strong violence. I give this film one star out of four.

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Upscale Family Place

Tony’s Restaurant has long been a favorite with my family. It’s a destination establishment that opened in 1954, with ambience to spare. People come from near and far, and you can choose from many different “types” of atmospheres. There’s the fine dining rooms with soft lighting that can be the setting for a romantic dinner for two or, as has often been the case for us, a long table of 20! The Third Street Café hasn’t always been there — though it’s been there for more than 25 years. It’s definitely more casual, with some high-top tables and some lower ones, as well as seating around the bar. Or, try sitting outside when the weather’s nice, where you have a sidewalk view, in the heart of Alton, Illinois’ entertainment district, of Third Street and all its activities. I remember back when the side dining room, just to the right of the current Piasa Street entrance, was the only dining room. Or, I take that back, I believe there was a small upstairs room at one time that was used for special occasions (or maybe it was open all the time). In the front of the dining room was a small barroom, and people used to line up, waiting for a table. When I was a child, my mom would stop by with friends on the way home from a work meeting, have dinner and bring home leftovers, which seemed like a very big deal. Chicken livers was one of the dishes that often was a big enough order that she couldn’t finish it, and they were delicious — though they no longer have them on the menu. Later, as we grew up, my siblings and I all made our way to Tony’s at one time or another, for a date, before prom or homecoming, or even with a group of friends now and then, just for fun. We all considered it a very posh place to go. Still do. The Vogue Room is a relatively recent addition, providing space for special events and wedding receptions or rehearsal dinners — and even has a dance floor. I was there recently with a small group to hear a local band — Lady Luck — play on the day after Valentine’s Day, though they kept the vibe going for one more day with a slower tempo acoustic set. We had dinner first and, as usual, Tony’s didn’t disappoint. I had the pepperloin kabob with Sicilian potatoes and the house salad (without cheese). The pepperloin kabob is every bit as good as Tony’s famous pepperloin, I just prefer get-

Vicki Bennington|For The Edge Tony’s Caesar salad ting it in the smaller pieces of the kabob. It’s tender meat that melts in your mouth, with just a hint of something sweet in the marinade, then topped with scrumptious garlic butter. The house salad (with the house sweet Italian dressing) is always hard for me to pass up as a side. And, if you haven’t tried them, the Sicilian potatoes are very tasty — there is a $4 upcharge, but I always think they are worth it. They are fried potatoes

— kind of sliced — with onions, peppers and olive oil. My husband tried the lasagna and said the sweet marinara sauce, which seems to be unique to Tony’s, was great and, of In this column, Vicki he Bennington shares her course, started the love of food and all that meal off with involves, from special the Caesar salad, which dishes at local and is one of regional restaurants to those things he can never new trends and fads, pass up. and things to try at A friend tried the home. The long list of homemade pastas, seafood and chicken choices, and of course, the pizza, which is different than any I have had (in a good way), make it a place that the whole family — of all ages — will find something that will soon become a favorite. Before long, you will begin to develop the memories of Tony’s that I have with my family — spending time together, marking special occasions and, of course, good food.
