Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

Taqueria Z good enough to eat By Vicki Bennington For The Edge
EDWARDSVILLE — The Metro East has a host of Mexican restaurants, each with its own vibe and its own take on tacos and other fare that might range from the traditional to contemporary or Mexican “street” food. This week, I gave Taqueria Z a try. I was actually a guest of “Give ‘em Something to Taco ‘bout,” a group of local taco connoisseurs, who peruse the area every “Taco Tuesday,” in search of the perfect taco. Vicki Each Bennington week, there are a few core taco reviewers, with several more who revolve or alternate from week to week, or an occasional special guest, who may show up only once. But, there are always enough taste testers to give the menu of the week’s chosen establishment a good run for its money. Taqueria Z is definitely unique, located on a side street, just off the main drag in Downtown Edwardsville, Illinois. The unassuming little building is fun — full of Mexican décor, festive music, and last, but not least, scrumptious “street” tacos and other ethnic dishes. What’s a street taco, you might ask? Here it is: Mexican street tacos are smaller

Chicken quesadilla, margarita chicken taco. (Vicki Bennington/For The Edge) tacos, typically served on corn tortillas (which these were). They are small in size, making it easier for a “street traveler” to enjoy a quick meal. The filling is served on two small corn tortillas (I wondered about the second tortilla) so that they don’t rip or tear when piled high with toppings. And there you have it. A taqueria, by definition, specializes in tacos and burritos.
I started the meal with an original margarita (Corralejo Reposado tequila, Cointreau and lime) and corn chips with Rooster Beak guacamole — so fresh and creamy, with chunks of pico de gallo — billed on the menu as, “like nothing you have had before.” The only thing I would have added is a little salt, but it’s definitely worth the trip, all by itself. The margarita was
tasty, too. Others tried the house margarita (Exotico Reposado Tequila, Gran Gala orange liqueur and lime), which we tasted back and forth. Each had a unique flavor, but both were really good. You also have a choice of draft beers, tequilas, Goshen coffee, bottled Mexican and local sodas, tea and juice. From there, we moved on to the tacos, chacos and quesadillas.
I tried three different taco fillings (the tacos do not come with cheese, and we all know by now, that’s what I prefer). They are served on corn tortillas, and topped with plenty of cilantro and onion, which I love. For fillings, I tried the carne asada (steak), the margarita chicken and the chorizo, which reminds me of breakfast burritos a former co-worker used to make, years ago — everyone loved them. The chorizo was just how I remember it — and I don’t think I’ve had it since then. Next time, that would be my first pick, though all the other taco fillings were good, too. I even had the chance to try the Ahi tuna, chunks of tender tuna that almost melted in your mouth. For the vegetarian in the group, a mushroom quesadilla fit the bill. We found out that earlier in the eve-
ning, there was yet another choice offered as a special — Diablo shrimp — but it proved to be so popular, we missed out. Oh well … maybe next time. There’s also an al pastor (marinated pork) filling. For myself, the soft corn tortillas were fine, though when I first ordered, I thought they would be hard corn tortillas. Still, they were good. Others preferred the soft flour tortillas on which the quesadillas were served. That’s a matter of personal preference. The chacos and the quesadillas both came with crispy chihuahua cheese. Three different sauces in varying degrees of spiciness were available on the table to use as garnish. The menu also includes rice and beans, salsa and chips, and chorizo and cheese dip. continued from Page 7 the week, I noticed on the menu that Sunday brunch consists of breakfast burritos, with Poblano y Papas (potatoes with chili peppers), chorizo or a combination, served in a rolled-up flour tortilla with eggs, chihuahua cheese, rice, beans, cilantro and onion. Now that’s a lot of burrito. And it can be complemented with a Bloody Maria (notice it’s not Mary, so that means tequila instead of vodka). That sounds interesting, for sure. Gives Sunday breakfast a whole new meaning. Seating is fairly limited — around 20 or so chairs inside

attend and open to the public. “Visitors will be able to look or climb inside the tanker, talk to the crew, kick some tires,” said St. Louis Airport Director of Aviation Dave Miller about the rare opportunity to examine a KC-135 military aerial refueling aircraft. Both the KC-135 and the Boeing 707 airliner were developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype. It is the predominant variant of the C-135 Stratolifter family of transport aircraft. “I am so pleased that Colonel Jacobson agreed to bring this aircraft here,” said Miller, who has a personal history with the KC-135, first built in the 1950s. “Air-toair refueling is the tactic that makes our U.S. Air Force head and shoulders above all other air forces in the world. Tankers refuel fighters, cargo, bombers, reconnaissance,
— but in nice weather, seating doubles with the outdoor patio. But that didn’t stop people from coming in and lining up on the Tuesday we were there. Taqueria Z is located at 109 E. Park St. in Edwardsville. For more information, visit taqueriaz.com. Check out the group’s video review at facebook/giveemsomethingtotacobout. that’s what gives our air force the legs that no one else has.” During Desert Storm, the KC-135 tanker was the first aircraft to take off for the U.S. attack on Baghdad, he noted. Miller himself has flown KC-135s more than 2,000 hours. Some of those hours include during the late 1960s above the Gulf of Tonkin over North Vietnam. Miller served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1987 and retired as a major. He accumulated 888 days in Southeast Asia. “We got an emergency call from a Republic F-105 Thunderchief,” he recalled. “It was hit and had fuel loss. We immediately went, pumped fuel as soon as possible and slowed the loss. No sooner did the navigator start asking the pilot if his ‘feet were wet’ (military slang for when an aircraft moves over water) than the pilot ejected over international waters. I never heard what happened to that guy and the plane went into the water.
IF YOU GO: What: St. Louis Regional Airport’s Free Flights for Kids, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 864 of Young Eagles When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29 Where: St. Louis Regional Airport, Illinois routes 111 & 140, East Alton, Illinois Info: Visit stlouisregional. com or call St. Louis Regional Airport at 618259-2531; eaa.org. The brute force yanked and disconnected the tanker, which we had to repair.” It takes 30 minutes on average for a KC-135 crew member, referred to as the “boom,” to refuel an aircraft by locking the tanker’s drogue, or “umbilical cord,” into the receiving aircraft’s fuel tank. The boom travels in a tanker’s small crawlspace in the lower half of its fuselage; the fuselage’s upper half is a cargo deck and cockpit.

(Vicki Bennington/For The Edge) “Maybe twenty tankers supported the B-52s. The tanker rolled in behind you,” said Miller, who’s also flown B-52s more than 2,000 hours, for a total of approximately 5,000 military flying hours, including training aircraft. On Sunday, the St. Louis Regional Airport’s aviation celebration continues with Free Flights for Kids, sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 864 of Young Eagles. Though the displayed airplanes, cars and bikes will be gone, children ages 8 through 17 can return with their parents or guardians for the flights. Advance sign up for flights can be done Saturday during the Wings + Wheels event. Those children who fly will receive a certificate. Free flights start 9 a.m. Sunday, with the last time to register for a flight at 2 p.m. Miller said that when the airport’s first open house occurred, the event was more focused on aviation, but over time has
come to include so much more. The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary (LMS) Corral will be at the airport from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, when visitors can feed carrots to wild mustangs and pet their mane. “The airport contributes to the greater good of the entire community and the quality of life of the Riverbend, and we like to participate in opening the grounds to visitors and aviation fans,” Miller explained about the impetus of the open house. “These events speak that.” At least 50 planes, mostly small two-seaters, will be available Saturday for visitors to look over and sometimes climb into. The airport’s car show will exhibit antique vehicles including from the Alton Antique Auto Association and private individuals. The MDA Car & Bike Show is presented by the Southern Illinois Camaro Club. Not only will guests experi-
ence an array of vintage planes, hot rods, classic automobiles and motorcycles, but also specialty booths with food and kids’ activities. Special displays, including a bounce house and the LMS Corral, provide entertainment for youth. As a family event, young and old can enjoy looking at cars, planes and bikes; listening to ’50s, ’60s and current music; and, spectators can vote for their favorite show entries. Show entries are free and trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. Saturday; registration for entries opens at 9 a.m. Food and drink will be on sale and families are welcome to bring picnic baskets. Free parking is located directly in front of the airport, which is at Illinois routes 111 and 140, two miles north of Illinois 255. Time helps parents appreciate empty nests By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com
ALTON — Sometimes it takes a while to embrace an empty nest, but often eventually the reality gladly gives parents more living space to repurpose for their own once young adult children fly to coop. Alton homeowner Stacey Noble-Loveland and Godfrey homeowners Angela and Reid MacDowell just recently refashioned their vacant children’s bedrooms into more useful spaces as studies and guest bedrooms filled with their own cherished belongings. Noble-Loveland’s son, Ty Loveland, 21, left for college three years ago in August. The Bradley University mom made his childhood room into an office/guest bedroom, with Ty’s twin bed along one wall. “For years I was going to fix up a little room, as an office for myself, in the basement,” Noble-Loveland said. “I just repainted and fixed up his room as a bedroom/office for me. I’m very close with my son, so I guess that’s why it took me three years. It will always be his room, but now I’ve come to realize that when he’s back, he’ll be back for visits. The room in the basement never happened, but now I don’t need it.” Ty graduates from Bradley University, in Peoria, Illinois, next spring with a degree in game design and will be in hot pursuit of internships over the coming months. “Jobs can take you anywhere. I’ve encouraged Ty to have strong roots and wings,” she said of the Alton High School 2016 graduate. “I want him to pursue his own interests wherever that takes him, but you only have one hometown and I want him to be proud of his.” Noble-Loveland lived in her Alton, Illinois, home when she
Godfrey homeowner Angela MacDowell sits in her home’s study, which until recently was her son Matt MacDowell’s bedroom. Angela’s great aunt’s quilt, right, covers a closet, now filled with games, but which Angela decided to make a supply closet for supplies for scrapbooking and creating artwork. (Jill Moon/The Edge) was born. Then a house three doors down on Mound Street went on the market, her parents loved it and moved there when she was 3 years old. When the house they moved from went back on the market in 2004, while going through a divorce, Noble-Loveland bought her childhood home. “We love this two-bedroom home. It’s been perfect for us,” said the single mom and director of resident services at The Esquiline, A Life Plan
Community at the Shrine, in Belleville, Illinois. “It worked out really great because Ty was young and I was going to school.” About seven years ago, Noble-Loveland received her master’s in gerontology. She now teaches the subject as an adjunct professor at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. So, who’s to say you can’t go home again — just make it your own.
Although the MacDowells’ oldest child, Matt MacDowell, attended Southern Illinois University Carbondale for a couple years, his sister, Claire MacDowell didn’t leave the nest until this year. She moved to Virginia to attend Washington D.C.’s George Washington University in pursuit of a master’s in sociology. In the meantime, while Claire, a 2016 AHS graduate, was in high school and then an undergraduate at Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville, Matt returned to live with his parents and also commuted to SIUE, from where he graduated in 2014, and moved out one year ago. “We just painted two bedrooms and got a new bed delivered last week,” said Angela MacDowell, a licensed clinical social worker, about her and her husband’s efforts to refashion their kids’ vacated rooms. “I checked and asked them. see NEST, Page 13

It was my grandmother’s,” Angela said. Reach Jill Moon at 618-208-6448 and Twitter @jill_moon.

Movie ‘The Goldfinch’ fails Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of same name
By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge
If you thought the heists explored by “The Thomas Crown Affair” weren’t boring enough, or if you sat through “Ben Is Back” and hoped there’d one day be a movie in which young people could hurt themselves more with booze and pills, then do I have a picture for you! Warner Bros. Picture’s “The Goldfinch,” released last week, became one of the lowest-grossing titles in history. Such a thing must be witnessed firsthand and I locked it into my Tuesday night schedule. Donna Tartt’s source novel of the same name may have won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2014, but the movie version plays off a little dusty and with a protagonist that I would liken to an overly sullen Holden Caulfield of J. D. Salinger’s 1951 novel “The Catcher in the Rye.” Excited yet? There’s nothing about this movie that quickens the pace, including gunshots and a terrorist bombing. Theo Decker (played by Oakes Fegley as a young man and Ansel Elgort into his 20s) was 13 years old when his mother was killed in an explosion at the Metropolitan Museum of Art during a visit one afternoon to see a display of the Dutch masters. In the confusion of smoke and carnage, Theo stumbles through the debris and encounters a dying man (Robert Joy)
painting as a source of comfort in a time when he has barely any control of his depressive emotional state. Fighting with his dad’s girlfriend (Sarah Paulson) and falling into the drug culture with another troubled kid at his Vegas school (Finn Wolfhard playing a Ukrainian named Boris) gives Theo all the incentive he needs to run back to New York as soon as tragedy strikes again and no one is looking. The painting and the dying man’s ring are now all he has in the world. Back in his home city, Theo is able to build a life with Hobie (Jeffrey Wright), an antiques restorer who teaches him the trade in return for the ring. Hobie and Theo are also frequently visited by Pippa (Ashleigh Cummings), the dead man’s niece, who was also injured in the explosion. Despite an obvious affinity for her, Theo becomes engaged to the lovely,
empty Kitsey Barbour (Willa Fitzgerald), the daughter of his former caretakers. This again allows him to spend time with Kitsey’s mother. The final act of the movie concerns Theo’s descent into criminality as he learns to forge antiques and then partners with an adult Boris (Aneurin Barnard) to steal back “The Goldfinch” from drug dealers to whom Boris had sold the painting years before and behind Theo’s back. It’s bleak and complicated and ends with the most irritating little burst of optimism for a set of reprehensible characters who were dealt some bad cards, and doubled down to make their own lives worse. Good drama, maybe, but not an entertaining movie.
Nicole Kidman, right, in a scene from “The Goldfinch.” (Macall Polayi/Warner Bros. “The Goldfinch” runs 149 Pictures via AP) minutes and is rated R for drug use and language. I give Theo continues to hold who gives him a ring and wealthy Barbour family, this film one star out of four. who are the parents of tightly to his secret prize cryptic instructions to a classmate. Source Juicery raising funds selling T-shirts, bracelets for pediatric cancer patient
The Intelligencer
EDWARDSVILLE — Hometown Source Juicery will be selling “Bella’s Warriors” T-shirts on Friday, Sept. 27, to help raise money for the Boyer family. Bella Boyer, a 13-year-old student at Liberty Middle School, was diagnosed with stage IV nasopharyngeal carcinoma this past June. Her treatment plan requires multiple inpatient hospital visits lasting several days to receive chemotherapy and radiation combined. Sales from T-shirts and armbands will help off-set the expenses associated with the medical care since Bella’s
diagnosis. Over the course of her cancer treatment, Bella is remaining positive and continues her schooling, attending classes when symptoms are minimal. Bella’s mother, Summer Boyer, updates her Caring Bridge site regularly with Bella’s treatment progress. The most recent treatments have caused Bella to have a lot of nausea, vomiting and headaches, which can lead to extended stays at the hospital. Bella’s medical team will order repeat imaging after Oct. 15 to determine if there has been a reduction in the tumor’s size.

T-shirt sales have also helped off-set some of the expenses we’ve acquired over the course of her treatments. The community has been wonderful supporting Bella and our plan is to continue to ‘Kick Fat Amy’s Butt.’” The slogan “Kick Fat Amy’s Butt” can be found on the back of the “Bella’s Warriors” T-shirts for sale at Source Juicery. “Bella’s Warriors” T-shirts cost $20 each, in all sizes, and will be on sale from 12 to 3 p.m. The bracelets will also be available for purchase.
