Series melds music, theater, dance & science, literature, politics for inspiring entertainment

EDWARDSVILLE — It’s that time of year when Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Arts & Issues series kicks off. Whether interested in music, theater and dance, or science, literature and politics, Arts & Issues offers an exceptional mix of inspiring entertainment that enriches the community, as well as SIUE’s students, faculty and staff. Arts & Issues’ first event from Manual Cinema is an interesting combination of theater and handmade show puppetry, using cinematic techniques and innovative sound and music to create immersive visual stories for the stage and screen. Xfest 10th anniversary,Sept. 9-13 SIUE Xfest is a five-day festival of alternative theater and dance that introduces the campus to a dizzying array of performing artists. Each September the festival presents ensembles of national and international renown as well as featuring the works of regional emerging artists. All participating Xfest artists offer master-classes and workshops to departmental majors in a full week-long immersive learning event. As Xfest approaches its 10 year anniversary SIUE is thrilled to have hosted artists and ensembles from New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, St. Louis, San Francisco and Chicago. One of the only university festivals of its kind, Xfest marks SIUE as a destination for experimental, alternative and avante-garde performing artists from around the United States. Arts & Issues’ season wraps up in 2020 with three events. “Chaos Magick” will spotlight SIUE assistant professor of piano Angela Kim in an evocative,
multi-media experience, featuring artists Michael Robert Boswell, a graphic designer, and Peter John Kearney, a motion designer. This performance also will incorporate the work of composer Dan Van Hassel and choreographer Kevin Hockenberry, an assistant professor in SIUE’s Department of Theater and Dance. “Chaos Magick” starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at Dunham Hall Theater. ‘The Kitchen’: Talented cast, ho-hum thriller

The new gangster movie “The Kitchen” is a little bit like “Mean Streets” and a little bit like “The Departed,” but there’s no origin of Martin Scorsese anywhere to be found. It’s also relatively short, mildly sluggish, and a whole lot like another recent movie, “Widows,” of which I didn’t see the point. On paper, “The Kitchen” looks great. Featuring a trio of interesting actresses, whose characters are set loose in 1970s’ New York City — and taking them all out of character from their careers to-date — “The Kitchen” could be a wonderful thing to behold. But, aside from looking amazing up on the big screen where production designer Shane Valentino led the charge, “The Kitchen” isn’t the blood-splattered urban drama I was craving. It’s just another ho-hum attempt to dramatize a graphic novel I’d never

o heard of. Hell’s Kitchen is a Midtown H Manhattan neighborhood that borders h the Hudson River east of Brooklyn. Hell’ss Kitchen was run by the Irish Mob until t (probably) the gentrification of the 1990s, b but this movie is set back in the gritty days of 1978, when organized crime was a still thriving under the still-just-watching f eye of the FBI. When a trio of loser thugs b a (Brian d’Arcy James, Jeremy Bobb, and James Badge Dale) go to prison f for robbing a liquor store on a lark, it w changes the dynamic of the organization C and their wives don’t feel like they’re w getting the protection they’re owed by s the matriarch of their particular family, o Helen O’Carroll (Margo Martindale). It’s now up to Kathy Brennan (Melissa S McCarthy), Claire Walsh (Elisabeth Moss) s and Ruby O’Carroll (Tiffany Haddish) to start fending for themselves. shopkeepers, but these ladies aren’t all big hair and bigger sunglasses. They’re smart, ambitious, and, once the chips are down, quite ruthless. Claire is the most tired of being pushed around. Her relief at her abusive husband’s lockup is slowly supplanted by a desire to never be his punching bag again. When she hires a shell-shocked ex-boyfriend (Domhnall Gleeson, becoming an even better actor than his famous father) to enforce the dirty work side of their racket, Claire becomes infatuated with violence. She doesn’t shy away from the killing or the disposal of bodies. She finds it romantic, in a sick way. Ruby loves their new line of work because it
On the Edge of the Weekend sticks it in the face of Helen, her mother-in-law, that she’s black and able to freely do what Helen’s white son isn’t capable of. Kathy’s story is different. She leads the trio from the perspective of a mom fending for two kids, but she finds that the work fulfills a side of her she’d never before considered. I guess if you’re happy in what you do, you’ll never really work a day in your life. But then, the coup sets in and bullets start to fly and the Italians (Bill Camp, et al.) get involved as “war” approaches. By the time their husbands get early parole, these chicks are done sitting at home tending to their own kitchens. I have been enthralled
by the anti-typecasting of McCarthy for years. I wrote a lot in the last year about her great performance in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (and, less so, about “The Happytime Murders”) and I think she’s got it in her to be a creative force on either side of the comedic/dramatic divide. Moss already clearly has demonstrated an ability to slay her critics. Some might argue that “Mad Men” was nothing more than seven seasons in the evolution of Peggy Olson from mousy secretary to that final boss scene of her strolling into her new digs with a cigarette dangling from her lips. I would be one of them. Haddish is certainly the newcomer here, but
nothing about her gives you any impression that she lacks on the confidence scale. It’s certainly not in her performance as Ruby that we should doubt her. “The Kitchen’s” trio of femme fatales did a shakedown of a 34th Street deli owner and Ruby was already making plans to take their empire all the way up to Harlem. Feminist thinkpiece? Surely. Entertaining movie? Only barely. ”The Kitchen” runs 103 minutes and is rated R for violence, language throughout, and some sexual content. I give this film one star out of four.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington
Hop on over for breakfast!

GLEN CARBON — As far as I’m concerned, breakfast is a wonderful meal. There are so many choices of what is considered breakfast food, that on the rare occasions that we go out to a restaurant to “break our fast,” I can hardly decide what I want to get. Consequently, I end up over-ordering. The thing is, when we do go
out for breakfast, it is usually not in the morning. We like to have breakfast for dinner, or at the very least, breakfast for lunch. When my daughters were growing up, I would occasionally prepare what are considered breakfast foods for dinner, and as I recall, they, too, thought it was a treat. My husband certainly did — and still does. We recently visited the IHOP in Glen Carbon — a perfect breakfast place. It does stand for International House of Pancakes, after all. Strangely enough, we didn’t get pancakes. And, the menu

includes a number of lunch and dinner entrees, appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and salads, so for a minute, we couldn’t decide which meal we really wanted to make it. In the end, we both chose “breakfast-y” items. The strawberry banana French toast is IHOP’s original French toast, topped with glazed strawberries and fresh banana slices, powdered sugar and whipped cream. We saved that sweet and tasty concoction for dessert. By creating a “Griddle Combo,” the French toast dish came with two eggs, bacon and hashed browns, as did the buttermilk biscuits and gravy that I ordered. So needless to say, there was a lot of food on the table. We couldn’t eat it all, but were able to sample several different breakfast dishes. The milk gravy was quite good (I had never tasted IHOP’s version before), and I’m fairly picky about my gravy, and though the biscuits had a flatter appearance, they were tender and delicious. The omelet selection is vast, with everything from chicken fajita to spicy poblano, spinach and mushroom or garden, along with a chance to “build your own” omelet. I need to try one of those next time. And of course, I have had the pancakes before, and they are fairly hard to beat, especially when you ask for a jug of warm syrup to drizzle over the top. If I can ever get past the IHOP breakfast menu, maybe one of these days, I will try having lunch for lunch or dinner for dinner. And by the way, I don’t think we are the only ones that think “breakfast for dinner” is a treat. Doggett reveals a little about her sad childhood. But one nice thing she remembers is that when her mother wanted to be kind to her, she would let her have “breakfast for dinner.” That was one of her fondest memories. But, I digress. Edwardsville Public Library, city of Edwardsville’s inaugural book festival sure to inspire

EDWARDSVILLE — The city and the Edwardsville Public Library’s inaugural “Edwardsville Book Festival” is coming to the community Saturday, Sept. 7. “We have planned a day of fun for book lovers, including local authors, book sales, panel discussions in the Edwardsville Public Library’s community room, a kid’s corner, musical entertainment on the bandstand, and food and drink,” Edwardsville Public Library (EPL) Director Jill Schardt said. “Craftspeople who make “bookish” themed items will also be on hand, so you can shop local.” Edwardsville alderman Chris Farrar, whose ward includes the Edwardsville Public Library, approached Schardt and EPL’s Development & Outreach Librarian Cary Harvengt to collaborate for a book festival. “This is considered a joint event between the city of Edwardsville and the library,” Schardt explained. The Edwardsville Book Festival is from 9 a.m. to 4 pm. Saturday, Sept. 7, at City Park and in the Edwardsville Public Library’s community room.
