Edwardsville Muny Band Music Director Jim Kerfoot leads the Edwardsville Municipal Band at a summer concert in the Edwardville Arts-in-the-Park series at City Park.

TRIBUTE Continued from Page 5 every Thursday from June 6 through Aug. 22 at the Edwardsville City Park. This year the first concert happens to fall on D-Day. Kerfoot himself is a veteran of the U.S. Army, in which he served as bandsman for a couple years and then became the Bandmaster/Commander of Army Bands. Kerfoot served from 1976 until 1997, when he retired after 21 years of service. Now like his military service, Kerfoot begins his 21st season as a member of the Edwardsville Muny Band. The immediate past former director, the late Mary Davis, held the position for 25 years, Kerfoot recalled. “She asked me to be the assistant director. I was for a couple years until she passed away and then the city asked me to be the director,” said Kerfoot, of Maryville, who has been in the position and the band’s conductor for seven years; as a member, he joined as a flutist. “The last two years, when Mary was sick

before she passed, I was doing the conducting but she still did background work and program notes.” Kerfoot rarely prepares a themed concert, but even then the concert format follows a similar pattern for each. “We open with a march, then an overture, usually an opera overture, and then feature a soloist or group; ; following with an Americana work and something peppy; the second half is more involved with the third selection a musical,” Kerfoot explained. “We always end with a march. It’s our tradition. And, we always conclude with the National Anthem. It’s an inspiring ending to the program.” The Edwardsville Municipal Band’s repertoire includes multiple-movement compositions, such as First Suite by Gustav Holst. “That will take the place of a feature because it features the whole band,” Kerfoot said. “I don’t usually do a concert about a certain thing. The Fourth of July is an exception, but it’s not all American music, but predominantly it will be traditional for that concert. “June sixth will commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day for World War II. World

War II music has a lot of narration. Although there is not a lot of band music specific to D-Day, I found many with a World War II theme. For example, with just the music alone was ‘American Anthem’ (by Norah Jones) from the Ken Burns series about World War II, ‘The War.’” Other music for the tribute concert includes “The Greatest Generation,” by Greg Danner, inspired by journalist Tom Brokaw, who wrote a book of the same name and popularized the term describing those who fought in World War II; and, “Hymn to the Fallen,” by John Williams, from the movie “Saving Private Ryan” during the scene of a beach landing. “It’s very dramatic,” Kerfoot said. The concert also will include more general numbers, such as “Victory at Sea,” by Richard Rodgers, which is from the 1940s television series of the same name, and the theme song from “Schindler’s List,” also composed by Williams. “It’s really beautiful and very haunting,” Kerfoot said. “We’ll salute the service members and pay tribute to the armed forces with ‘America’s Finest’ (by Jay Bocook).”

A couple of medleys are included: “The Greatest War Themes,” by Darrol Barry, and “The Homefront: Musical Memories from World War II,” by James Christensen. The concert will end with the British march, “Eagle Squadron,” written for and dedicated to United States Airmen serving with the Royal Air Force prior to the U.S. entry into the war. “My father, Roy Kerfoot (1918-2014), was in D-Day. He landed at Omaha Beach, so he went through all of that,” Kerfoot noted. Kerfoot’s father was a combat G.I. in the second wave of an amphibious assault. He served from 1943 to 1945. In addition to a weekly summer concert series, which includes concerts at the Edwardsville City Park at the Cleaon Etzkorn bandstand at 8 p.m. every Thursday starting in June, the Edwardsville Municipal Band performs for civic events and the city of Edwardsville special events. The Edwardsville Municipal Band boasts more than 65 members.

The band also performs at various official functions throughout the year. Band concerts in Edwardsville’s City Park have been a mainstay of the town’s musical life for more than a century and a half. Visitors come from all over. The roots of the modern Edwardsville Municipal Band go back as far as the 1840s. Concerts in the park were performed as early

as 1885. The Enterprise Band, 23 members strong, made up the first direct descendent to today’s 75-piece band. According to the band’s website, edwband. com, in 1899, American Federation of Musicians Local 98 was organized in Edwardsville, and since then band members have been unionized and are paid for summer concerts. In 1927, a band tax was passed at the state capital in Springfield, authorizing municipalities to pass a band tax and Edwardsville did pass that tax the same year. Other towns, including Wood River, Highland, Alton, Collinsville and Belleville also

had bands and some folded in later years, but the Edwardsville band has continued to play. In the 1950s, women were allowed to become playing members. Nancy Hoffman, who became a principal clarinetist with the Edwardsville Muny Band, was one of the first female players in her first year in 1957. One of her relatives played in the Schwartz band of the 1800s, which merged with the Enterprise Band, and in 1927 became known as the Edwardsville Municipal Band. The band had several directors but two with the longest tenure have been Cleaon

Etzkorn for which the current City Park bandstand was named. He served 25 years as euphonium player and 25 years as director. Davis then took on the position, which also is the conductor for the group. She started in 1964 as a euphonium player and was appointed director in 1984. Over the years, the band has increased its membership to meet the modern concert band demands and the audience has steadily grown in size. The Municipal Band boasts a large library of music and inventory of instruments and has graduated to its own building to house its equipment.

Increasingly homeowners adding 4-season rooms

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — A four-season room can add space, comfort and value to a home, and even health benefits for homeowners. Edwardsville resident Maureen Weir, who lives in the city of Edwardsville’s Grandview subdivision began considering such a room when she and her husband, Kevin Flynn, decided to do something this year to improve their home’s exterior. “When we moved in, it had a screened-in porch at the back of the house, but the boards are falling apart. We have to rip the porch off

the back of the house and have a patio or do something with it,” said Weir, who moved to Edwardsville four years ago. “We thought about putting an expansion in and went through the whole process, with bids, but it was going to be more expensive than we thought it would be. That was a couple years ago. As we got outside this spring, we see we have to do something this year. We contacted Patriot because their local.” The couple is considering a four-season room to use as a family room, because they’d like another space for family gatherings, See ROOMS, Page 12

ROOMS Continued from Page 10 though they have a spacious living room. “We have a really pretty backyard, so we want windows to see the view,” Weir noted. Patriot Sunrooms & Home Solutions also installs replacement windows but Patriot can certainly build any vision for a sunroom that its customers might have, including with insulated glass windows. Patriot Sunrooms is the exclusive dealer for the brand Four Seasons, which is the largest sunroom brand in the world, with 400 dealers throughout the United States. “We are the Four Seasons dealer in the Metro East-St. Louis area,” Patriot Sunrooms’ sales manager Jim Hentz, of Edwardsville, said. Hentz has been in the sunroom industry for more than 20 years, first working with a former company that also was a Four Seasons dealer. Patriot Sunrooms opened its Edwardsville satellite showroom at 3925 Blackburn Road at the same location as the former family owned company. Patriot Sunrooms also is family owned by Jim and Pat Lewis, of St. Louis, who have Missouri locations, with its headquarters in Kirkwood, and satellite showrooms in St. Peters and Ellisville. The Lewises founded their business in 1957, operating on principles such as quality, loyalty and customer care. “We are off the beaten path, but we don’t subcontract,” Hentz said to Metro East House Hunters. “We do all the local installations. We call this location the showroom or the warehouse because we receive all the supplies for the Illinois side. The true beauty of having installers on the Illinois side is we don’t have installers going back and forth and we can keep our cost down and expense down with less time on the road.” Patriot’s Edwardsville installers go all the way to Springfield, Illinois, and as far east as Centralia. “Many people these days prefer to add a four-season room versus moving,” said Hentz, who was born and raised in Edwardsville. “They call and say, ‘We’re going to stay, we love the community.’” With Patriot Sunrooms, Hentz has worked with several Grandview subdivision homeowners, including for a current sixth project for a couple he’s worked with repeatedly. “In 1970, we did a screen room, and over the course of the last twenty years or so, we changed their roof to an insulated roof, upgraded windows, installed a door and now they’re at 80-plus years old and we’re in the process of taking out the patio screens because they want to put our insulated glass in,” Hentz said. “They’ve lived there fifty years and truly evolved with us. That’s just a small sampling of our repeat customers.” Conversely, Hentz got a recent telephone

call from a past customer who asked if he remembered him, which Hentz did. “A couple had a sunroom in their home that we installed, and called to say they sold their house, but wanted a sunroom on their new house, a ranch style that they downsized to,” Hentz said. Four Seasons began its business primarily with commercial applications in the late 1970s, creating curved designs and glass roofs for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dairy Queen and McDonald’s structures, Hentz explained. “Four Seasons evolved because people wanted that type of feel on their home,” he said. “We’ve done so many projects for so many reasons — adding square footage, growing families, empty nesters who have big gatherings and want to be all together in one room, a lot of people do sunrooms for that reason. Others like the healthy benefit of getting sunshine and sitting outside.” About six years ago, a man called and said, “My doctor said I need a sunroom,” Hentz recalled. “I went to the house, he told me he was diagnosed with a lack of vitamin D, which leads to depression and physical ailments, and with allergies in spring and summer, customers are able to get into a ‘sun and stars’ room, with a glass roof. There truly are health benefits to it.” Generally there are three styles of sunrooms, which include four- and three-season rooms, explained Patriot Edwardsville’s showroom manager Rob Hentz, the son of Jim Hentz; Rob started as a general employee, working with his father since 2009. Sunroom styles are basically categorized as studio or straight eave; gabled or cathedral; and, conservatory, which is more angled with a higher roof structure. Sunrooms with a solid roof are referred to as “sun and shade” and those with a glass roof as “sun and stars.” “Patriot does great work, work that I can be proud of,” Rob said. “The person who installed a Patriot sunroom is likely who you’ll see come out to do follow-up calls. It’s important to us to present someone who’s been to the home and it’s great to hear the feedback they hear from our customers.” Patriot Sunrooms follows its own principles, offering a free in-house estimate, good for 30 days from the initial estimate date. It takes about 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the project, from start to finish for Patriot Sunrooms to complete construction. “Of course, barring any curve balls from Mother Nature. She loves to throw us curve balls,” Rob said. Patriot procures the architectural drawings, permits and approval from home owners associations. Patriot Sunrooms also gives it own warranty along with the manufacturer’s warranty. “Many customers say they spend a lot of time in these rooms, more than any other See ROOMS, Page 15

Another national brand for which Patriot Sunrooms is a dealer is Temo Sunrooms. Four Seasons’ latest product, available through Patriot Sunrooms & Home Solutions is LifeRoom, which is a state-of-the-art, built structure, engineered by Latium USA. LifeRoom’s Smooth Glide motorized screens can be raised or lowered for privacy or to keep away pests, such as mosquitoes. LifeRoom is like having the great outdoors in your own backyard when the screens are up, making LifeRoom a wide open sanctuary; screens down, it’s a private oasis. LifeRoom also features LED mood lighting; Cool Mist climate system; Soft Breeze technology, which can reduce the temperature up to 40 degrees; UV rays reduction up to 95 percent; and, retractable screens designed to serve as projection screens for a home theater. “We’re building one in Swansea in the next month,” Rob noted. Patriot sales representatives can take a photograph of a home and electronically show, in general, what a sunroom or similar attachment might look like. “It gives a really good idea,” Rob said of the technology. Poehler a natural at such comedy as ‘Wine Country’

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist Amy Poehler’s feature directorial debut comes to you this week in very limited release theatrically, but it’s making a big wave streaming on Netflix. “Wine Country” is a small comedy in scale, but one that packs a big punch, with its closely knit cast and dense, humorous dialogue. Some might knock the woman formerly known as “Parks and Recreation’s” Leslie Knope for playing it safe and casting her entire roster of players with lifelong friends, but that’s honestly part of the appeal. “Wine Country” is a great reason to stay in, uncork a chilled chardonnay and put your feet up for a girls’ trip for grownups. Just watch out for the more emotional touches that come along for the ride because six women don’t go to Napa for a long weekend to keep things, ahem, bottled up. Rebecca (Rachel Dratch) is turning 50 and, to her friend Abby (Poehler), that’s a Photo by Evan Agostini/Invision/AP|For The Edge big deal that deserves to be treated to the pulling-all-the-stops glam weekend that Actor Jason Schwartzman, who plays a live-in chef/driver in “Wine Country,” attends the movie’s premiere at the Paris Theatre in New York City. Abby dreams about for their social group. Recently terminated from her job, Abby uses the trip to cover her own unhappiness. She gets all their old friends from their college waitressing days in Chicago to meet-up in Northern California, where she pours it all out: fancy house with world-weary caretaker (Tina Fey), live-in chef/driver (Jason Schwartzman), edgy tarot card reader (Cherry Jones). Along for the adventure are uptight restaurateur Catherine (Ana Gasteyer), overwrought mom Naomi (Maya Rudolph), aging singleton Val (Paula Pell, 18-year “SNL” veteran writer), and flaky Jenny (Emily Spivey, pulling double duty as the film’s co-screenwriter). Together they relive the glory days when they were young and eager to take on the world. But, a long weekend is a lot of time for the cracks to show between even our closest confidants. Catherine’s inability to step away from her business and Jenny’s lack of connection to the trip make it seem like they don’t even want to be involved. Naomi’s got some health concerns looming that keep her aloof. Val continuously hits on a cute millennial bartender (Maya Erskine), but the reciprocation is awkward and unenviable. Worst of all, Rebecca fails at trying to tell Abby that the trip, the excursions and the nonsense aren’t what she wants to celebrate her birthday. As the kind of Type A person that Poehler herself claims to be, most of the conflict in

this movie comes from the menace that Abby becomes trying to protect her precious itinerary. She forces her friends to eat at fancy restaurants, try making paella and pose for group photos. Everything is planned to the minute, including matching costumes and ’90s music playlists. With constant backbiting (“Can I just say something?…”), our sextet of leads can’t even agree if or when they want to take MDMA to collectively cut loose from life or just listen to podcasts about the benefits of maybe doing so. Middle age, apparently, is weird. “Wine Country” is a lot like 2004’s “Sideways,” the great dark comedy that starred Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. “Wine Country” is brooding and sad, but with just enough buffoonery to make it palatable for those of you who refuse to believe that movies should replicate the often messy complications of real life. The vineyard-set buffoonery in this movie is a lot sillier when the focus tips to it, but the reliability of the performances keeps it anchored to a place of love and friendship. I’d like to see what else Poehler might try her hand at, but this is honestly the kind of movie she should stick with. She’s a natural. “Wine Country” runs 103 minutes and is rated R for crude sexual content, language and some drug-use material. I give this film three stars out of four.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Throw another steak on the ‘barbie!’

We like to eat out — at least a couple of times a week. We didn’t always do that, but now that we are “empty nesters,” sometimes we just feel like it. Or … maybe I should say I don’t feel like cookin every night. The nights I do cook are not always anything too special. My brother and his wife have “fend for yourself” dinners every once in awhile, when they each go to the kitchen and find what they can, when they can. I do, however, come through every now and then with a nice meal, if I do say so myself. In fact, when we barbecue, it’s one of the few times that my husband and I actually work on a meal together. Usually, it’s I cook, he cleans up, so barbecuing is a change-of-pace and can even make cooking — dare I say — fun. Recently, we decided to break out the “barbie” for the first official cookout of the season. Grill cleaned — check. Propane tank full — check. We decided to shop for steaks at Schnucks, and at the meat counter, we found two nice filet mignons. We bought two pieces of maple-flavored bacon to wrap around them and a bottle of Photos by Vicki Bennington|For The Edge Andria’s Brush-On Steak Sauce. Filet mignon with mini meat thermometer Now, let me tell you about this sauce.

A friend of ours turned us on to it many years ago, and after marinating a nice, juicy steak in it, use the marinade as a bit of an au jus once the meat is cooked and on your plate. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss. The sauce is actually made by Andria’s Steak House in O’Fallon, Illinois, and though it is not directly affiliated with the steak house, the now-closed Andria’s Countryside Restaurant in Edwardsville also used the sauce (as well as others). For now: Back to my house. With the steaks on the grill, I added a foil pack of sliced zucchini, with nothing more added than sea salt, black pepper and a drizzle of Spanish

Continued from Page 21 blend extra virgin olive oil that I purchased at the Olive Oil Marketplace in Alton, Illinois. As a starch, I made wild rice (OK, this was from a box, but hey, it was easy and tasted good). One of my friends will have a fit when she sees I used a box (processed) version. Another friend will recall that I prefer her Armenian rice pilaf as a side with my filet mignon, but she wasn’t there to make it for me, and it is somewhat complicated. The boxed version served my purpose — this time. I also utilized cute little meat thermometers that I found online, so each steak can be monitored independently for individual preferences. I prefer mine medium rare (130- to 140-degrees internal temperature, according to your thermometer), while my husband prefers his a solid medium (a little bit hotter at 140- to 150-degrees internal temperature). Remove from grill, and place on a plate with an aluminum foil “tent” to allow them to breathe for about five minutes. We both ended up happy, and I have to say, my husband did himself proud as the “grill meister.” The trick is to start with highquality filets, about 1-1/2-inches thick, which we definitely did. I will be going back to the

Schnucks meat counter for more. I marinate them first in the Andria’s sauce, in a deep glass dish for at least a couple of hours, before we want to start cooking. When you are ready to begin, set the dish with Vicki Bennington the steaks on the counter for about 30 minutes or so, until they are close to room temperature. Place the steaks on the grill over mediumhigh heat and leave them alone for a few minutes with the lid closed. Many grillers want to turn them too soon. After about six minutes, give them a flip and let them cook another six minutes or so, until they reach your desired level. This is where the little thermometers come in handy. Times may vary, depending on your grill, but keep a close eye on them, resisting the need to turn them. It turned out to be quite a feast. The filet was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the sides were the perfect accompaniments, and the vegetable dish proved that you don’t have to get extravagant — just use the right seasonings — and keep it simple. Next on my list is to try grilled salmon. I’ve always made it in the oven, but I want to try a new grill recipe that someone shared with me. Let’s see … what can I have as my sides?

For this very furry-friendly month and all year round, keep in mind the benefits of pet adoption. • General Benefits — There’s a reason that they say dog is man’s best friend. Having a pet, not limited to dogs, is something that everyone should experience at some point in their life. Pets can be calming, mood lifting, empathetic and so much more. They teach you how to be selfless and responsible as you are caring over another life (for those of you without children). Generally speaking, they make you happy. • Save the Life of a Shelter Pet — Only 29 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters; the rest are left to live in the rescue centers or, worse — euthanized. Bottom line: adopting a pet saves their life. Give a dog or cat a home they wouldn’t have otherwise. • Stress Reduction — Some studies show that people begin to feel less anxious after spending less than one hour with an animal. There are endless benefits from lowering your stress level, and while the things that we find stressful in our lives are often hard to cut out, including an animal in your life can help. • Helps with Depression — In some cases, therapists suggest to patients suffering from depression that they adopt a pet. An animal will love you unconditionally and also be a great friend and listener. People with depression often benefit from having a pet, as the animal can help them get out of the house and out of their own head. • Engaged Mind — A key to a healthy mind, especially for those who are elderly, is staying engaged with others. A pet is often a conversation starter and being out with a pet often warrants questions or comments from passersby. Bringing your dog to a dog park is a great way to meet other people with similar interests.

Photos by Breanna Booker | The Edge A dog owner recently took advantage of a sunny day by taking her pet to the city of Edwardsville’s dog park on Schwarz Street. Dogs are able to interact with their owners and furry friends while off their leashes, as they chase toys and hang out. The Schwarz Street park features dusk-to-dawn lighting, but the park hours are from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The city has another dog park at Joe Glik Park, at 710 E. Lake Drive, with a frenced area for dogs. The dog run is free to use and open to the public. Animals can be off of their leash. Park hours are from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Blues celebration song has Philly bar origins Associated Press The Boston Red Sox have "Sweet Caroline," the Chicago Blackhawks have "Chelsea Dagger" and the old Hartford Whalers had "Brass Bonanza." The St. Louis Blues? They have "Gloria," the 1982 hit song for Laura Branigan that has improbably become the celebration song for a team that won 29 of 43 games to go from last in the NHL to the playoffs and all the way to the Western Conference final against San Jose. If that seems odd, consider this: "Gloria" became a St. Louis craze in part because of a bar in South Philadelphia: Jacks NYB, a private club in the middle of Flyers country, is where five Blues players happened to watch the Eagles-Bears playoff game Jan. 6 and, well, things happened. When the players arrived at the hole-inthe-wall with a locked front door, they were greeted with "Let's go Flyers!" chants and some ribbing, but quickly assimilated with the crowd, cheesesteaks in hand. A club member kept yelling, "Play 'Gloria!'" and DJ Matt Cella obliged by putting on Branigan's catchy pop hit every commercial break.

"They just went nuts when they heard it, and we loved watching it," Blues forward Robby Fabbri said. "So we just happened to get a win the next day and made it our win song." Long before Fabbri and teammates Robert Bortuzzo, Alexander Steen, Joel Edmundson and Jaden Schwartz heard "Gloria" (over and over again) that night after an invite from friend Larry Yadan, members of the Jacks club made it their song as they prepared to march in and compete in the city's annual Mummers Parade. When the Jacks won first place in their division, they played the song all over the neighborhood to celebrate. "If we don't win first place, we're probably not having an Eagles party like that five days later and 'Gloria' would have probably died because it got on our nerves so much from the summertime," club co-founder Mike Montecalvo said. It's been fun for Jacks, too, some 900 miles from St. Louis. "It's like I was at a sports bar in St. Louis," said Brian Lamping, a St. Louis attorney who was in Philadelphia on business and watched a playoff game at Jacks. "It was surreal."

Museum presents ‘Printing Pastoral: Visions of the Countryside in 18th-Century Europe’

The Edge

ST. LOUIS — The Saint Louis Art Museum will present “Printing the Pastoral: Visions of the Countryside in 18th-Century Europe,” a free exhibition examining the early development of one of the most recognizable textile genres: copperplate-printed cotton, popularly known as toile. It opens Friday in Gallery 100. Toile has remained popular since its inception more than 250 years ago, when technological advances allowed textile printers to exploit the type of copperplates long used by artists to print on paper. Artisans were then able to create nuanced, intricate designs, and their creativity flourished. The emergence of copperplate-printed textiles coincided with the taste for scenes

After: Nicolaes Berchem, Dutch, 1620–1683; “Chair Cover Printed with Pastoral Scene”, 1761; plate-printed cotton; 21 1/2 × 25 3/4 inches; Saint Louis Art Museum, Gift of Richard and Suellen Meyer 54:2017 of country life and other pastoral imagery in Europe. Middle- and upper-class audiences clamored for fabrics patterned with idyllic

scenes of shepherds, ladies on swings, amorous couples and village celebrations. Textile printers responded, drawing inspiration from

a wide variety of sources. This exhibition reveals the nostalgia for pastoral themes common to 18th-century textile consumers and art collectors by pairing furnishing fabrics, ceramics, and paintings with prints by — or after — Rembrandt van Rijn, Nicolaes Berchem, Paulus Potter, JeanHonoré Fragonard and François Boucher. A featured object in “Printing the Pastoral” is a reconstructed bed, complete with coverlet and curtains, that illustrates the visual impact of these innovative fabrics in the 18th-century home. The exhibition will be on view through Dec. 1. Admission to the Saint Louis Art Museum is free to all every day. For more information, call 314-721-0072 or visit slam.org.
