American beauties:

Experience Big Papa G, help save wild national treasure By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com If you think you know trivia nights, but have yet to attend a Big Papa G music trivia experience, rethink what you know. Holiday Shore’s Greg Horta, a k a Big Papa G, makes his events interactive — makes you want to sing, dance and laugh out loud. The music featured in Big Papa G’s events varies widely from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s to the present and from Frank Sinatra to The Beatles to Jennifer Lopez. What other trivia includes a lip sync and dance contest to win points for your overall score? Horta formed his company, Big Papa G

(BPG) Entertainment LLC, about eight years ago, providing not only music, but motivation for causes and community among guests to BPG events — big or small. His love for music and fun led him to launch BPG Entertainment, a fully insured company that specializes in corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, Sweet 16 parties, educational events, promotional events and any other special occasion in the St. Louis and Metro East region. “A few people have said, ‘You should make the trivia harder,’ but I try to make it a level that all ages can enjoy and keep it fun,” Horta noted. His motivation is making people happy, which includes supporting good causes. Big Papa G regularly and often donates BPG Entertainment’s time, rubbing shoulders and

During the most recent USO event, about 4,000 troops from Missouri’s Fort Leonard Wood arrived at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on their way home for the holidays. USO of Missouri provided a celebration for the troops that featured free food, entertainment, including Big Papa G, and giveaways from regional businesses. “Victory Block Leave (VBL),” otherwise known across the U.S. Army as holiday block leave, takes place every December as soldiers are allowed to take leave to be with their families. “It’s my biggest donation. I love giving back, too,” recalled Horta, who has participated in the USO of Missouri event for the past three years. Its workforce is all volunteer with no staff salaries or hourly wages paid. LMS is 100 percent supported by donations, of which 100 percent are dedicated to The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary’s goals. Those goals are rescuing as many wild mustang horses and burros as possible and adopting them into permanent loving homes while saving them for future generations. A live auction will take place between two separate Music Trivia Blast rounds, with items that include an original watercolor painting of Ciqala, one of The Legendary Mustang Sanctuary’s majestic and gentle permanent residents. This beautiful art is painted, professionally matted and framed by Master Watercolorist Holly Banks, a signature member of the Saint Louis Watercolor Society. Banks also is a registered instructor with the prestigious and international Michael Wilcox School of Colour. Also, expect a Cardinal Fan Basket and more, including a raffle for a 55-pound local beef bundle, donated by Ernst Family Farms, of New Douglas, Illinois. You must attend the event to purchase a raffle ticket. So, if you are planning an event, you can leave your worries behind and let BPG Entertainment oversee your party or event, be it indoor or outdoor. Big Papa G is there to ensure that your event is running smoothly and that your guests are enjoying themselves. Big Papa G personally deals directly with clients, contacts them prior to the event and is willing to set up the day before the event begins. Big Papa G’s great radio voice often gets credit from his clients and with his charming and funny personality, he can steer a fantastic party for you. “I never, ever will put myself into ‘best DJ’ category because I see myself as entertainment, an emcee,” Horta said. Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington

So May I Introduce to You …

If you are out and about in Edwardsville, there are several places to choose from when you’re looking to grab breakfast or brunch. One of those spots is a long-time staple, Sgt. Pepper’s Café, so named after a song and album by the famed group from Liverpool — you know who I mean — whose likenesses grace the walls. In fact, you can get breakfast all day, which is a big plus for me. I don’t always like to eat eggs and bacon — or even waffles — early in the morning. But by the time lunch rolls around, they start to sound pretty good. I tried the Belgian waffle with strawberries that came with powdered sugar and poofs of whipped cream. Needless to say, it hit the spot. If you aren’t a strawberry person, you can choose peanut butter or chocolate chips, blueberries or granola. But the strawberries were luscious, and they looked so beautiful! It was a hard choice to make between the waffle, the pancakes or French toast, since I had a taste for something sweet, yet “breakfast-y.” If you are trying to keep it on the lighter side, which I didn’t feel like complying with on this particular day, you can have oatmeal and toast, fresh eggs, an omelet, or

yogurt and toast. Sgt. Pepper’s Café is known for its horseshoes (or ponyshoes). What’s a horseshoe (you might ask)? It’s an open-faced sandwich that was created in the late 1920s by Chef Joe Schweska at the Leland Hotel in Springfield, Illinois. Basically, you take all the items you like (in the case of breakfast, that’s eggs, sausage, ham or bacon, throw in some hash browns or country potatoes), and then smother it all with gravy or cheese sauce. Whether the “shoe“ belongs to a pony or a horse depends on the portion size. If you’re looking

‘Captain Marvel’ falls in line

‘Over-complicated’ production acts as prequel in MCU

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist What exactly is it that makes the Marvel Studios movies so popular? They’re fun, sure, and they feature lots of really big explosions. They have nifty recurring characters who all have an opportunity for a moment of wisecracking humor peppered into their inane dialogue. Superpowers are flashy. Peculiar weapons are good for a giggle. But, this old skeptic doesn’t get it. I understand that it can be endless fun to spend time at the movies, but I love so many more movies in so many more ways than these. If the cups of tea that make up our collective entertainment tastes are so varied, why then does Marvel continue raking in ever-increasing bags of dough? They’re not smart movies. I don’t learn anything from them. Nearly two dozen features into the experiment, there are maybe three or four that I’ve outright loved. I have to rationalize this phenomenon (the multistory shared universe) as something unique. Maybe it’s nothing more than discretionary income being used to remain culturally relevant to our peers. Is water cooler gossip still a thing? And, does the $153 million earned by “Captain Marvel” this weekend carry that much water for my theory? “Captain Marvel” is the nickname of Carol Danvers (Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson), an U.S. Air Force test pilot who, through a freak accident, transforms into a powerful agent of the Kree, an alien race from planet Hala. The Kree are human-like in appearance. Danvers’ main confidant is Yon-Rogg (Jude Law), but if you try to remember all the gonzo names of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you’ll go cross-

Danvers’ main job with the Kree is to develop some sort of power that she’s tapped, which allows her to do things, like, shoot energy beams from her fists and fly through the air. These will be useful tools in her battle against the Skrulls, her new enemy of shapeshifting lizard people. Seriously. And they look like a green-hued version of the

Night King from “Game of Thrones.” Not kidding. Where’s this going? So, halfway through this movie, we realize what we’re seeing is a prequel to all of the other MCU pictures. Danvers’ actions are taking place in 1995 Los Angeles and she winds up on Earth after a botched mission in her war against the Skrulls (and their leader played by Ben Mendelsohn). Here, she meets a younger Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and

tents of what it would mean later. His accent (along with his sister’s) made the two seem a little exotic in the small Illinois town. His sandals and longer hair made him stand out a bit, but residents didn’t realize that in less than six months, he would be one of the four most popular guys in the country — maybe the planet. George bought a guitar while in Benton, and he played at a local dance. A radio station, WFRX-AM in nearby West Frankfort, played “From Me to You,” which some believe might be the first airplay the Beatles received in the United States. The house he stayed in with his sister in Benton is now The Hard Day’s Nite Bed and Breakfast. Their songs, their look, the whole Beatles

persona, have made girls and boys, men and women tap their feet and sing along, and young girls scream and faint. They’ve also spawned a multitude of fans. And, the array of memorabilia at Sgt. Pepper’s Café is another thing that patrons seem to enjoy. It

Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), which is kind of sweet, and they follow along as she tries to regain her memory and locate Project Pegasus, the engine test that gave her amnesia and mixed her up with the Kree six years earlier. Annette Bening co-stars as Mar-Vell, a Kree scientist whose real identity keeps shifting definition. This entire production is a lovely example of over-complicated storytelling trying to whittle itself down to a level that can be appreciated by the large, unwashed least common denominator. There are only seven plots left in Hollywood. How do you improve that? You improve it by and through production value. “Captain Marvel” distinguishes itself, and honestly gives credence to any reason to watch it, by owning its ’90s nostalgia and wearing it like a badge on its sleeve. There are jokes about Blockbuster and RadioShack and pay phones. Danvers wears grunge flannel and a Nine Inch Nails T-shirt. A bar has a Street Fighter II arcade console and a Laser Stax jukebox. Oh yeah, there’s a cat that’s not a cat named Goose. Goose is cute, cuddly, a total ham, and has a purr that sounds like music. “Captain Marvel” is all over the place. It’s not “Wonder Woman” by a mile, even though it goes for its own “Immigrant Song” moment by using Gwen Stefani’s vocals from “Just a Girl” during a fight montage. Canned feminism is the worst kind of feminism. But Danvers (and Fury!) will return in seven weeks for “Avengers: Endgame.” Let’s hope they square away something more palatable for that big event. “Captain Marvel” runs 124 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive language. I give this film one and a half stars out of four. doesn’t matter how old they are. The Beatles had a way of getting around the generation gap. So, when you stop by Sgt. Peppers, you have a chance to grab one of the dishes for which it has become known or choose something different from its extensive menu, while you take the opportunity to reminisce about the group who sang “Love Me Do” — and we did.

What can be said that has not already been said about a band that is arguably one of the most recognized in the world? Probably, nothing. The legendary group brought their gigantic stage show to Chicago’s United Center for their “End Of The Road” tour and turned in a performance that will not soon be forgotten. The evening started with a voice-over — “You wanted the best. You got the best. The Keith Brake Photography/Keith Brake|For The Edge

Continued from Page 13 hottest band in the world - KISS!” — and, with that, the curtain dropped and the legendary rockers entered from above. In the tradition of KISS, everything was larger than life. The band descended onto the stage through pyrotechnics, playing the intro to “Detroit Rock City.” The crowd reaction: off the charts! You can’t be as legendary as these guys and just walk out strumming — no — you are required to come in 110 percent and that is exactly what happened. As soon as their feet, or rather giant boots, hit the stage, they got straight to work. No band, I have ever watched live, puts in as much work to engage hoards of adoring fans and they were handsomely rewarded for their efforts — song after song after song. When Paul Stanley took the first opportunity to welcome the crowd, he explained that KISS would be playing some of their best selections from yesterday and today. Even though the costumes were redesigned — for what is assumed to be the final KISS tour — familiar elements still were in place, including Gene Simmons’ serpent-like tongue, See

No matter where you were seated, at some point during almost every song, each member of KISS was front-and-center to your line of sight, except Eric Singer (who took on Peter Criss’ role in the band), because a moving drum kit may be a little over the top — even for KISS. At one moment, Stanley asked the crowd if See

Something for everyone at Modern Love Wedding Expo: An All Inclusive Wedding Event

An All Inclusive Wedding Expo

2019

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

Modern Love, with intentional focus on universal diversity and inclusivity in the world of weddings, brought a beautiful broad vision to help make so many dreams become beautiful realities to mark one of the most important times in couples’ lives. Vendors helped plan pre-parties, invitations, photography/videography, ceremonies, decorations, receptions, entertainment, cuisine, fashion, venues and so much more. Katie Copeland of East Alton, Illinois, was impressed with Modern Love.

Marissa McMillan came from Danville, Illinois, to attend Hearst Illinois Media’s Wedding Expo, held March 10 at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Meridian Ballroom. She has no direct connection to the Metro East, but she and her fiance like the region and it’s where they plan to marry once they set a date. “A couple of the venues caught my eye here today,” McMillan said. “I really like the Elsah area a lot, the small-town feel of it is really nice and I’m going to make my wedding what I want.” Courtney Motl, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, who is getting married this July, liked the size and ambiance of the Wedding Expo.

“This is the first bridal show I’ve ever been to and “This is a lot more laid-back than other bridal you can learn a lot from it,” said Copeland, who is shows,” she said. “We were able to walk through and getting married in March 2020. “I am overwhelmed we got to hand-pick which vendors to talk to without with information.” having that pressure of ‘book now, book now.’ At Modern Love Wedding Expo: An All Inclusive other shows, I felt like I was getting pulled in 500 Wedding Event registered brides from all over the different directions, but not here.” Metro East and St. Louis. Several brides booked appointments for 2020 weddings, about which vendors were thrilled.

“I’ve been really looking out for a makeup artist, and now I’m almost 95 percent sure that I’m going to book one that I met here.”

Hearst Illinois Media, which includes thetelegraph. com; theintelligencer.com; On The Edge Of The “I’m looking at the different venues here at the Weekend, a premier weekly entertainment magazine; bridal show, different places to get a dress, and food,” The Telegraph, based in Alton; The Intelligencer, Davis said. “The ceremony is supposed to be outside, based in Edwardsville; and, the Journal Courier, so our fingers are crossed for good weather.” based in Jacksonville. Carly Davis, of Edwardsville, is planning a May 2020 wedding.

Davis is planning her own unique atmosphere for her wedding.

At Modern Love’s wedding-wear fashion show, guests saw models, in who they see themselves, “My fiance plays in a bluegrass band, so we’re wearing the latest trends from elegantly understated going that way with how it’s set up, kind of folksy to extravagantly detailed, all from Alton’s Frew’s and neat,” she explained. “We are looking at going Bridal & Formal Wear. with Bella Milano Catering at the LeClaire Center “I knew we had to create a fashion show whose and they’re going to treat us right. We actually met models reflected the couples in the audience, and there when we worked there.” with the help of Frew’s Bridal and Formal Wear, Karen Ruiz of Belleville found inspiration for her that’s exactly what we did,” Hearst Illinois Event May 2020 nuptials, as well. Coordinator Kendra McAndrews noted. “I got some really good ideas on photo booths and the catering,” she said. “This is big. It’s a lot to take Reach On The Edge of The Weekend (The Edge) in. Our wedding will be formal. We are doing ‘Love editor-in-chief Jill Moon at 618-208-6448 and you to the moon and back,’ as our theme. So I may Twitter @jill_moon. Reporter David Blanchette be looking for something with the moon and stars.” contributed to this article. The Modern Love Wedding Expo was sponsored by

Continued from Page 15 it was anyone’s first time seeing KISS and the applause was, to me, quite surprising, which caused me to take note. There were many youngsters in attendance with their parents, some in the full attire of the KISS Army (the official fan club for KISS, as well as the unofficial name used to refer to KISS fans in general). There also was a very large showing from those in KISS makeup. All in all, the show was a massive gathering of screaming fans hungry for the enormity of KISS. Hit after hit and song after song the crowd remained engaged, entertained and, some of the first

54 ! e l a S 54 !

timers in attendance, were seen mouths agape. Highlights of the evening included a tremendous drum solo by Singer — one of the better drum solos I have ever witnessed; Simmons’ bass solo, leading into “God of Thunder,” especially when he rose atop the crowd and gave a literal and figurative bloody great performance of this classic; Tommy Thayer (who took on Ace Frehley’s role in the band) performing an amazing guitar solo during “Cold Gin”; and, last but not least, Singer on piano performing “Beth.” This show had everything any KISS fan — new or old — could hope to see. They say it’s the end of the road, but we have heard that before and I, for one, hope they change their minds.
