Funkhouser makes the most of "eye-opening" mission trip

By MATTHEW KAMP Of The Edge Edwardsville High School baseball coach Tim Funkhouser has been around baseball his whole life. He played at EHS and Western Illinois, before coaching at Triad and Edwardsville.

Funkhouser, though, had never been part of what he witnessed during a four-day, November mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Through SCORE International and the St. Louis Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Funkhouser took a four-day mission trip to the Caribbean nation to spread the gospel, bring supplies and teach children about baseball.

After turning down past offers from Dr. Dave Neighbors, an assistant baseball coach at Wesclin and member of the St. Louis Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Funkhouser agreed to the trip this year.

“It was an opportunity to be with men with the same interest in mind of baseball and sharing their faith. It was something I was intrigued about,” Funkhouser said.

“It was just a great experience full of daily activities and was really eye-opening.”

The trip consisted of four mornings of baseball camps, followed by missionary work in local villages.

Funkhouser arrived in the Dominican Republic capital, Santo Domingo, on Sunday, Nov. 9.

It was the next day that Funkhouser witnessed first hand the poverty of the country during a baseball camp in Santa Fe. Over 20 percent of the population is in extreme poverty. “ Yo u s e e a l i t t l e b l i p o n television or watch a story about a professional player that came from a background that hasn’t been ideal with extreme poverty,” Funkhouser said. “To see it first hand was overwhelming at times.

“To see how much we take for granted — the environment that many Americans live in on a daily basis — it makes you really appreciate what you have, anywhere from the basic needs of food and water.”

Nearly 300 children attended the first camp in Santa Fe, which is located outside of San Pedro de Macoris. Ages ranged from 5 to 18.

The region is known as the “Cradle of Shortstops.” Current MLB players Robinson Cano, Startlin Castro and Johnny Cueto, among others, were born there.

Baseball is one of the few luxuries for children in the country, and Funkhouser said it showed by the eagerness and high spirits of the campers.

“When we were at the baseball camp, there was not one time that we’d see a child dropped off at the field. The kids that wanted to be at the camp walked there from wherever they were. They would be carrying backpacks and walking miles just to play baseball that day,” Funkhouser said. “They don’t have a lot of opportunities to look forward to and baseball is one of the outlets for that.”

Nixon, a former outfielder with nine MLB teams, including the Atlanta Braves, runs On-Track Ministries.

“Otis Nixon would stand in front of the 250 to 300 kids and tell them he was in the big leagues for 18 years, and their eyes are keyed on him and ears are opened up listening to every word that’s translated,” Funkhouser said. “To see him demonstrate some of the drills to the kids was fun to watch.

There were some players that were very talented and skilled.”

The first three days of camp were conducted at local baseball fields, and the final was at the Rawlings Foundation. Nearly 1,000 campers attended the final day.

The field conditions, at least the first three days, were not ideal.

After the first day in Santa Fe, the next two days were in San Pedro de Macoris.

“Every field had some grass on it. Being a warm weather environment, the grass is going to flourish. They didn’t have the money, though, for the upkeep. As far as bases, I don’t think I didn’t seen many in sleeves like you’d see. Sometimes, you would just seen something resembling a base thrown down there,” Funkhouser said. “The fields we were at had

concrete walls in the outfield and backstop. The dugouts were decent.”

Funkhouser compared the Rawlings Foundations fields, which are used by academy teams, to a college baseball field.

Campers were split into several groups, from hitting to infield drills to shagging fly balls in the outfield.

Funkhouser said equipment was scarce.

“If you had 25 kids in line in the outfield, you have maybe five kids with a glove. Many of them were just wearing sandals,” Funkhouser said. “We were able to pass on equipment to these kids so that they are able to use them on a daily basis.”

The trip, though, wasn’t just about baseball.

After each camp, the group traveled to a small village and delivered food and water. The rural area was like many in the area, as there was no electricity and housing was poor.

“We fed a village. We took different supplies and food to villagers that cut down the sugar cane and harvest it. They live in extreme poverty with no electricity,” Funkhouser said. “We were able to provide each family with enough food for a month and a half. We visited them and played with the kids. Through a translator, we were able to get to know them.”

Trips to two orphanages were also on the itinerary.

“There was a girls’ orphanage with 45 girls living in one environment that has really been benefited by SCORE,” Funkhouser said. “There was a boys’ home that have parents that can’t support them, so the boys are raised in a household of eight in two different buildings. They try to model a family environment in a Christ-like manner.”

During the trip, Funkhouser and the mission group stayed in a hotellike resort in San Pedro de Macoris.

It was located inside a complex that included a golf course.

“Robinson Cano’s house was in our same complex, and he had a couple of guards outside his facility. There was one other Major Leaguer that had a house in the complex,” Funkhouser said. “Within the complex, it had concrete walls and then barbed wire at the top. It probably has 300 houses in it. In the United States, it would be like Fox Creek without the size of houses.”

The mission trip concluded Nov. 13.

Funkhouser said it took some time to get used to being home again and that the trip gave him a new perspective on life.

“It really hit home the first week back. You had to get re-acclimated to your own environment,” he said.

“You are able to step back at times and think about what you were experiencing for those four days. To see those conditions was definitely

eye-opening.”

Funkhouser, later, met with the high school baseball team and delivered the same message.

S h o r t l y a f t e r, t h e b a s e b a l l program put together a program to send baseball equipment to the Dominican Republic through SCORE International. The Tigers had bins for equipment set up at their annual apparel sale at Liberty Middle School from Dec. 12-13.

“It was a project we wanted to do to collect equipment,” Funkhouser said. “Fortunately, one of our former players, Elliot Frey, works over at Rawlings and brought over items. We also had some of our own players and youth teams donate items that we’ll be packing up by the end of the week.”

The equipment should arrive in the Dominican Republic by the end of the month.

There may be more projects for the Dominican Republic in the future by the Edwardsville baseball team.

Funkhouser would like to make a return trip, and this time with his entire family.

“I would be interested in going back and even taking my kids in the future. I’m not sure if it will work out for next year, but I want to be able to take my whole family to experience November baseball,” Funkhouser said. “The primary focus is about everybody sharing their faith and doing so through baseball.”

In honor of the museum’s 10th anniversary, the 10th of every month will be family day, with special activities and treats. And on the birthdays of Lincoln’s four sons, the museum will hold birthday parties where children learn about past birthday customs and get to talk to a historian about the Lincoln family.

For The Edge The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will mark its 10th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s death with a slate of activities to educate and entertain people of all ages over the next year.

The centerpiece of the line-up for the two anniversaries is “Undying Words: Lincoln 1858-1865,” an exhibition that opened last month at the presidential museum and will run through February 2016.

But that once-in-a-lifetime presentation is just the starting point. The anniversary plans also include: • new digital features that will give visitors immediate access to documents and photos as they tour the library and museum, bringing new depth to the experience • a series of discussions with the artists and officials who conceived of the ALPLM and made it a reality • a presentation of artifacts related to Lincoln’s assassination and funeral – including one that a p p a re n t l y h a s n ’ t b e e n s e e n publicly since the 1865 • “The Battle Hymn Story,” a new show full of music and visual effects, will join our popular “Lincoln’s Eyes” and “Ghosts of the Library” productions • “To See Jerusalem Before I Die,” a new exhibition in the Treasures Gallery on Lincoln’s relationships with Jewish friends, supporters and opponents • frequent family-friendly activities, from parties on the birthdays of Lincoln’s sons to a concert of Civil War music to a “Pets in the White House” event that welcomes your pets to Union Square Park.

HISTORY EVENTS “Undying Words” will continue all year, using original documents a n d r a re a r t i f a c t s t o e x p l o re Lincoln’s great speeches and his changing views on slavery. On the anniversaries of key speeches, visitors, staff and volunteers will read his words in the museum plaza, and historians will take questions.

To mark the anniversary of Lincoln’s assassination and funeral, the Treasures Gallery will be filled with artifacts relating to that tragic time. The display will include something that hasn’t been seen since the 1865 funeral: a recently re-discovered silver medallion from the hearse that carried Lincoln’s body to the cemetery.

In August, the Treasures Gallery will be the location of “To See Jerusalem Before I Die.” The exhibit will highlight the many ways in which Lincoln related to the nation’s Jewish community in 19th century America.

On Nov. 19 – the anniversary of the Gettysburg Address – we’ll present “Love, Loss and Grief: Mourning in the 1800s.” This will look at Mary Lincoln’s many painful losses and how she, and the rest of the country, were expected to mourn.

GENERAL EVENTS The people who helped create the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum will return for a series of discussions about the planning

On May 16, the author of the “Fancy Nancy” series of books will visit for a soiree that includes games, a book- sign ing an d a costume contest, followed by a tea party.

Sept. 12 brings a “Pets in the White House” event. Families can bring their pets to Union Square Park and learn all about presidential pets through history.

ENTERTAINMENT “The Battle Hymn Story,” will debut in the spring, using a live actor and a stirring mix of music and visual effects. It explains how a song that began at revival meetings was transformed into the unofficial anthem of the Civil War. From January through March, we’ll offer special tours that focus on the museum’s many murals and their significance.

On April 16, we look at the way Lincoln has been portrayed on screen over the past century.

Historian Richard Wrightman Fox will take the audience from short silent films to ambitious dramas to tongue-in-cheek fare like “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.”

On May 10, we present “A Tribute to Mothers” concert with the wonderful Ollie Watts Davis.

And in July, we’ll present music under the stars with a special “Summer on the Square” concert at Union Square Park.

TOO FAST: High-speed cameras do the opposite of time-lapse, revealing secrets from the super-fast world of nature. The Hett announces 2014-15 schedule

The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts’ 2014-2015 season presents local and returning favorites and some well-known performers and speakers making their Hett debut.

Globetrotters to invade St. Louis

"Horrible Bosses 2"

The characters of the modern workplace comedy, like the rest of us, don't know how to make a living anymore.

Having haplessly tried to murder their bosses in the first "Horrible Bosses," Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis return in "Horrible Bosses 2" as hopeful inventors. "Let's bet on ourselves," they tell each other, making a clearly questionable wager. They go into business with a bath product dubbed "Shower Buddy," and with their abysmal guest spot on a morning show promoting it, it's clear they may have backed the wrong horse.

It's become a familiar genre trope of recent years: The idealistic self-starter business that almost certainly wouldn't stand a chance in real life. Dwarfed by corporations or left behind by the digital economy, comedies are routinely littered with plucky upstarts, from Kristen Wiig's would-be baker in "Bridesmaids" to Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson's middle-aged Google aspirants of "The Internship."

While the first "Horrible Bosses" tried to tap into the widely held fantasy of killing the overloads of the office, its sequel mines the farce in being your own boss. The entrepreneurial efforts of the film's ever-yammering trio, of course, fail, and the film descends into a thinly sketched kidnapping plot that serves mainly to space its celebrity cameos.

Hoodwinked by a rich distributor (Christoph Waltz), the guys — Nick, Kurt and Dale — plan to kidnap the executive's playboy son (Chris Pine). The ill-conceived scheme returns them to their criminal adviser (Jamie Foxx, who the film could have used more of), Nick's now imprisoned former boss (Kevin Spacey) and Dale's old torturer dentist (Jennifer Aniston).

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some sexual references, mature thematic material and historical smoking."

RUNNING TIME: 108 minutes.

When we refer to an actor's performance as breathtaking, we're usually engaging in hyperbole. Rarely if ever do we mean it actually affected our ability to breathe.

But during "Still Alice," watching the vital, sharply intelligent woman played by Julianne Moore slowly cede her mental faculties — and, most painfully, her identity — to Alzheimer's disease, I found myself frequently needing to gulp in big breaths of air, merely to steel myself for the next scene.

Of course this is partly due to the nature of the material.

There's no way to tell a story about Alzheimer's that isn't ultimately devastating, and writer-directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland clearly have no intention of sugar-coating the cruelty of this disease.

But as its title suggests, "Still Alice," based on the novel by neuroscientist Lisa Genova, is about one woman, and thankfully we have Moore, one of our most sensitive and nuanced actresses, in the role. She gives a warm, brave and shattering performance here — one that's already earning accolades, and deserves many more before awards season ends.

We first meet Alice, a linguistics professor at Columbia, as she's celebrating her 50th birthday with family. Chic and accomplished, she's managed to work and travel and raise three adult kids in a beautiful home. She and her husband, John (Alec Baldwin), also an academic, live in a lovely brownstone with a great kitchen.

But one day, giving a lecture, Alice suddenly stops, midsentence. She can't remember a key word. She recovers nimbly with a joke, but we shudder. Back home, taking her usual jog around campus, she gets lost. The camera blurs, along with the connections in her brain. We shudder again. We know what's coming.

"Wild"

Cheryl Strayed, as played by Reese Witherspoon in Jean-Marc Vallee's "Wild," is, bless the Lord, not an easily discernable type.

She's also not the sort we've often encountered on the welltrod paths of female stereotypes in movies. Strayed is a bundle of messy imperfections, as we gradually learn from flashbacks that accumulate throughout her therapeutic journey on the Pacific Crest Trail in "Wild."

She's a serial adulterer but no villain. (How many times have we seen that, in a woman, in our male-dominated movies?)

She's curious, experimental and intrepid to the point of selfdestruction. The same traits, though, may also be her salvation.

"I'm the girl that says 'yes' instead of 'no,'" she explains to a friend, with all the positive and negative implications of that statement abundantly clear.

Heavy with grief from the loss of her mother (Laura Dern) to cancer, haunted by remorse for seven years of unfaithful marriage to her sensitive husband (Thomas Sadoski) and shaking off a dark turn into heroin, Strayed sets out to hike 1,100 miles up the coast, from the Mojave Desert to Oregon. She's forcing self-renewal not by fleeing her life but by confronting herself in isolation. When she wrestles to strap on her oversized backpack, she's literally weighed down with baggage.

"Top Five"

Writer-director Chris Rock is not Andre Allen, the standup comedian turned movie star lead of "Top Five." But, it's almost impossible to watch his latest effort, a cutting comedy about showbiz, creativity and ambition, and not wonder what material Rock took from his own life. While that's a fun and compelling draw, thankfully, it's only part of the triumph of the film. In "Top Five," Rock manages to transcend the gimmick and his larger-than-life persona, to create one of the most vibrant, self-aware comedies of the year.

This is a story about a man who's become disconnected from his work and is looking for a change. Told across a single, jam-packed New York day, we accompany Andre on a press tour around the city on the day of his new movie's opening.

Andre, we learn, became a mainstream superstar by donning a full bear suit and playing the catch-phrase happy character "Hammy the Bear" in three blockbuster movies.

Now sober, grasping for relevancy, and about to marry a reality television star (Gabrielle Union), Andre just wants to be sincere. His new "serious" movie about a Haitian revolutionary just looks abysmal, like the fictional title in "Tropic Thunder."

It's clear that Andre is at a crossroads and even he isn't convinced of his new path.

Things really get going when Andre hooks up with Chelsea Brown (Rosario Dawson), a quick-witted New York Times reporter who's gotten the tony assignment to follow him around for an entire day. He resists, since the paper's critic has historically eviscerated his movies, but his agent (Kevin Hart) convinces him to go anyway. Chelsea's a fan, he thinks.

The most groundbreaking aspect about "Top Five" is that it defies categorization. It's a romance, a gross out comedy, a silly industry satire, and a sweet look at an artist who's just trying to figure out what he wants.

"Exodus: Gods & Men"

To what do we owe the second coming of the biblical epic?

A genre that was once as moldy as stale communion wafers has been reborn this year, first with Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" and now with Ridley Scott's "Exodus: Gods & Kings." The resurrection is partly to capitalize on the faith-based moviegoing audience and partly because the Bible offers stories suited to this blockbuster era, offering both spectacle and name-brand familiarity.

More than 50 years after "The Ten Commandments" sandals are back in style. We can only hope the trend will culminate in a seemingly ordained bit of casting: Someone has got to make a Jesus film with Jared Leto.

But big-tent Old Testament tales are no easy sell in times marked by both religious discord and secular disbelief. "Noah" was interesting because it saw the arc-builder as hero of environmentalism, a protector of both morality and animals.

The 3-D "Exodus" also refashions Moses (Christian Bale) for modern times, giving us an elite, action-film combatant who's less a conduit for God than a strong-minded individual whose beliefs mostly jibe with the deity who secretly appears to him. (God is seen here as an impatient child, played by the 11-year-old Isaac Andrews).

"Exodus" — written by the team of Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Jeffrey Caine and Steven Zaillian — does indeed supply the big scenes. Slowly accepting his destiny and his Hebrew heritage, a bearded Moses rallies the Israelites and leads them to the climactic moment at the Red Sea (which isn't as sumptuously rendered as you'd expect).

"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb"

Take heed: There are at least two acutely sad moments involving Robin Williams' Teddy Roosevelt in the latest "Night at the Museum." The movie, subtitled "Secret of the Tomb," is imbued with the unshakable inevitability that even though we're still having fun, it's time to move on_a narrative made only more poignant by Williams's sudden and shocking death earlier this year.

It's hard not to concentrate on his every movement and word or to get antsy when he's in the midst of a bit and the camera cuts away to a monkey peeing on something, leaving us straining to hear Williams' voice. And yet, as silly a role and movie as this is, it also manages to live up to the (unfair) responsibility of being a comedy legend's last role. Director Shawn Levy and his team strike the right balance, without overwhelming the story with melancholy.

Beyond Williams, "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" is a lively romp with the over-the-top historical figures that audiences have come to enjoy over the years that, in spite of the dead zones, elicits more than a few bawdy laughs throughout its swift runtime.

The latest installment delves (not too deeply) into the mythology of the ancient tablet that brings the museum fixtures to life. When the golden treasure starts to corrode, things go haywire, leading to a particularly disastrous fundraising event as all the characters revert to their true, violent selves and, inexplicably, Teddy Roosevelt starts quoting Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy.

"Exodus" begins promisingly, with a bald John Turturro in makeup. As the Egyptian pharaoh Seti, the father of Ramses (Joel Edgerton) and king to Moses' prince, Turturro (and the brilliant Ben Mendelsohn's louche viceroy) gives the film a touch of camp, a necessary ingredient to any successful biblical epic. Scott ought to have kept it up.

However, the director of "Gladiator" and "Blade Runner" isn't known for his lightness of touch, but rather a monochrome masculinity.

His "Exodus" is action-heavy and more interested in the sheer computer-generated scale of the airy Egyptian palaces, the grotesque visitation of plagues (from the bloody Nile to the locust swarms) and the mass movements of the Hebrews.

Yet after Seti's death and Ramses' ascendance to the throne, "Exodus" seems to lessen in scope, turning into a mano-a-mano drama between the stepbrothers Ramses and Moses, who's exiled after the discovery of his Hebrew birth.

For an epic, there are, at best, only two clearly seen characters in "Exodus," with supporting players like Ben Kingsley (as a Hebrew elder), Sigourney Weaver (as Seti's wife) and Aaron Paul (as a Hebrew slave) all but inconsequential. Let our people go?

The leads, you may have noticed, are uniformly white, which has spawned a good deal of deserved controversy not abetted by Scott's defense that his stars were necessary for financing.

Latest in Hobbit series a visual feast

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I was so satisfied with the final installment of Peter Jackson’s six-film Middle Earth Saga , T h e H obbi t : T h e B a t t l e of Five Armies, that I told my brother it was the first movie I’d seen in ages that justified the cost of the ticket (a whopping $16.10 for IMAX 3D in this case).

It really is a visual feast and an experience that culminates for me a full thirteen years after I first came to J.R.R. Tokien’s novels in advance of the first film trilogy that concluded the story we’ve now seen unfold from its humble beginnings.

It’s a big week for my moviewatching habit and a lot of great films are popping up here and there to take advantage of. I’m g o i n g t o re v i e w Wi l d f o r y o u

next week and can’t wait for my Year-End Review the week after.

It should be good fun for all.

BOFA, as the cool kids call it, begins with the final showdown between Bard (Luke Evans) and Smaug the Dragon (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch) over the fate of Lake Town. I was heartbroken last year when Part II stopped right before t h e g o o d s t u ff , b u t t h e q u i c k start action here was much appreciated. With much of the h u m a n s e t t l e m e n t d e s t ro y e d , the remaining group ventures to Dale, the town at the base of the Lonely Mountain where Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman, who was also great hosting SNL last week) and his company of dwarves have barricaded t h e m s e l v e s i n t h e i r h o rd e o f historic treasures. Their leader, T h o r i n O a k e n s h i e l d ( R i c h a rd Armitage), has become cursed

with Dragon Sickness and has himself turned on his word to honor past pledges of wealth to be distributed between all the victims of the dragon.

Most of this is nothing more than preamble for a wicked multi-front battle that makes up the bulk of the movie between Wa r g s a n d O r c s , T h o r i n ’ s dwarf cousins (the Ironfoot, led by Billy Connolly’s Dain), Tharanduil’s (Lee Pace) elves, a n d t h e re m a i n i n g m e n f ro m Lake Town. Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) deftly goes between the groups using Bilbo, Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Ta u r i e l ( E v a n g l i n e L i l l y ) , a n d K i l i ( A i d a n Tu r n e r ) a s a g e n t s for peace. This movie excels a s a g ro u p p ro j e c t , e s p e c i a l l y behind the scenes where Jackson took the directing reigns from Guillermo Del Toro m o n t h s b e f o re t h e f i r s t s h o o t

laboriously began.

I loved the use of animals i n t h i s m o v i e . A w a r- m o o s e , some cool rams and rabbits, and the emergence of Beorn the Bear behind airlifted to the fight by the Eagles were all lushly filmed, attractive oneo ff s i n a f i l m t h a t c o n t a i n e d so many blink-and-you-missthem moments that I’m sure I m i s s e d s o m e g re a t o n e s . I f I had to name a favorite scene, though, it would definitely be a battle between the Elven Kings (Hugo Weaving’s Elrond, Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, and Christopher Lee’s Saruman) and the ghostly figures of long-dead human kings. It was stunning, bold, and wholly unexpected.

nonagenarian is moving like the guy in this flick.

Much like 2003’s Return of the King, The Battle of the Five Armies suffers from a false ending (not four) that puts Bilbo back in the Shire to find his relatives declaring him dead and stealing all of his possessions. It’s not a necessary scene, but it does allow the audience to find closure for the series by bookending the works neatly. Neatly, that is, until Warner Bros. successfully finds a way to adapt Tolkien’s Silmarillion works for yet more Hobbit goodness. Figure it out, WB! The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies runs 169 minutes and is rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images. I give this film four stars out of four.

Birding in the Ozarks For The Edge The bluffs and forests around Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks are a popular destination for eagles on their annual southern migration. Visitors who want to see these majestic birds in their natural habitat should make Lake of the Ozarks Eagle Days a winter weekend destination Jan. 3-4, 2015.

Missouri is one of the leaders in eagle population in the lower 48 states, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation, with more than 2,000 bald eagles reported each winter. They are drawn to warmer, wooded areas such as the Lake of the Ozarks in their migration from Alaska, Canada and the northern U.S. Eagle Days activities allow attendees to see the birds in a natural setting, as well as offering opportunities for up-close viewing at programs offered by the World Bird Sanctuary. Sheldon to host Hurray for the Riff Raff

Hurray For The Riff Raff is Alynda Lee Segarra, a young woman quickly leaving an indelible stamp on the American folk tradition. Segarra came to international attention in 2012 with her debut album, Look Out Mama, which earned her raves from NPR, The New York Times, Mojo and Paste. Her breakout performance at the 2013 Newport Folk Festival left American Songwriter "awestruck" and solidified her place at the forefront of a new generation of young musicians celebrating and reimagining American roots music.

The show is scheduled for 8 p.m. on May 3 in the Sheldon Concert Hall.

Skillet to headline Winter Jam

Grammy-nominated platinumselling rockers Skillet will return to the famed Winter Jam stage to headline the blockbuster tour ’s 20th year, it was announced tonight.

Reigning as the world’s #1 first quarter tour for four consecutive years, NewSong’s Winter Jam Tour Spectacular revealed its 2015 line-up and cities during a special event last night at Nashville’s Hard Rock Café.

In addition, the event was webcast

by Blue Scout Media’s StageHop.com to thousands attending “Winter Jam House Parties” around the world, where fans had a front row seat to the announcement and special performances by select Winter Jam 2015 artists.

The Scottrade Center in St. Louis will host Winter Jam at 6 p.m. on Jan. 24.

Tickets are $10 at the door and there are no advance tickeet sales.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — President Barack Obama is comparing people living in the country illegally to Mary and Joseph on the first Christmas.

The Bible says the couple actually obeyed a Roman decree by traveling to Joseph's ancestral town for a census.

But at an immigration forum in Nashville, Obama noted that Mary and Joseph were "strangers" in Bethlehem when she was about to give birth to Jesus, and there was "no room at the inn."

The president said, "If we're serious about the Christmas season, now is a good time to reflect on those who are strangers."

Obama defended bypassing Congress to grant deportation relief and work permits to millions living in the country illegally. His action would affect those who have been here more than five years and have children.

Republicans want to use their authority over federal spending to force Obama to roll back his decision.

Israel indicts American over plot to bomb Muslims

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli officials say an American Christian who passed himself off as an ex-U.S. Navy SEAL faces charges of trying to blow up Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

Israeli police and the Justice Ministry identified the man as 30-year-old Adam Everett Livix. The Justice Ministry said Livix underwent a psychiatric evaluation Tuesday after his indictment Monday on charges of illegal weapon possession and overstaying his visa by more than a year.

His indictment comes at a time of rising tensions in Jerusalem, mostly over a disputed holy site known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and Jews as the Temple Mount. It is the third holiest site in Islam and the holiest in Judaism.

This isn't the first time there have been allegations of a foreigner threatening a holy site in Jerusalem. In 1969, an Australian Christian started a fire at the complex's Al-Aqsa Mosque in hopes that it would hasten the second coming of

Lawyer: Man who stabbed student was bi-polar

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say an emotionally disturbed man stabbed an Israeli student in the head at an international Jewish organization in Brooklyn early Tuesday, then was shot and killed by a police officer after lunging at him with a knife.

Calvin Peters, who was 49, can be seen on amateur video waving a knife in the Chabad-Lubavitch headquarters at about 1:40 a.m. after police say he attacked Levi Rosenblat, who was studying inside. Officials said Rosenblat was expected to survive.

Peters had a documented history of mental illness and had been arrested 19 times since 1982, most recently in 2006 for drugs, police said. He had also been to the Chabad-Lubavitch before, which is open to the public at all hours.

For The Edge Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella," the 2013 Tony Awardwinning Broadway musical from the creators of South Pacific and The Sound of Music, will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre for a limited engagement from January 20 – February 1.

Performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" at the Fabulous Fox run January 20 – February 1. Show times are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 p.m., Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m.

There will be a Sunday evening performance on Sunday, January 25 at 6:30 p.m. and a matinee performance on Thursday, January 29 at 1 p.m.

Direct from playing the role on Broadway, Paige Faure has taken her glass slippers on the road as she continues in the title role for the tour. Ready to sweep Cinderella off her feet, Andy Jones plays the role of Prince Topher. Andy was a member of the original Broadway company of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" and understudied the role of Prince Topher.

Hammerstein II, a new book by Douglas Carter Beane and original book by Oscar Hammerstein II. The musical is directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Josh Rhodes.

Music adaptation, supervision and arrangements are by David Chase and orchestrations are by Danny Troob.

One of Rodgers and Hammerstein's most popular titles, "Cinderella" was written for television -- debuting in 1957 starring Julie Andrews. In 2013, the show made its long-overdue Broadway debut. Along with "Cinderella," Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's legendary musicals include "Oklahoma!"

"Carousel," "The King and I," "South Pacific" and "The Sound of Music."

Mr. Beane's book for "Cinderella" blends masterfully with the musical's cherished score with songs including "In My Own Little Corner," "Impossible/It's Possible," "Ten Minutes Ago" and "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?"

The creative team includes scenic design by Tony Award nominee Anna Louizos, costume design by six-time Tony Award-winner William Ivey Long, lighting design
