MELHS quartet to welcome 2014 in London Cheerleaders qualify for once-in-a-lifetime event

hile many of us are pouring champagne and watching the ball drop on our big screens, four MELHS cheerleaders will be busy preparing for the performance of a

Six hours ahead, in the historic West End of London, Leanne Willis, Taylor Guilbeault, Morgan Rodgers, and Courtney Williams will be lining up along the route of the city's annual New Year's Day Parade.

The four girls competed in a regional varsity cheer camp at Maryville University this past summer. Universal Cheerleaders Association officials judged contestants both individually and in squads of four or five. The contest was judged according to three criteria: cheers, dances, and jumps.

Only the top 12 percent of the camp's 250 or so performers were offered a slot in the parade.

Upon confirmation, the four girls each received a detailed newsletter and a DVD of their routine in the mail.

The newsletter states that the cheerleader might stop to

perform anywhere from "four to 20 times" for the duration of the route. The girls admit the routine seems a bit complicated right now. The unpredictability of the parade's starts and stops makes matters even more challenging.

"It's pretty tricky," Leanne Willis says.

"Yeah, it's going to take us a while," Morgan Rodgers adds.

The parade begins near Green Park and heads northeast up Piccadilly Avenue. Then, it turns southeast on Regent Street and Pall Mall past Trafalgar Square, heads south, and ends just in front of the Parliament building.

The London New Year's Day Parade is one of the biggest holiday parades in the world. It attracts almost one million bystanders along its two-mile route, including many London city officials and dignitaries. Millions more across the world watch it on television.

The prospect of performing in front of so many people prompts a chorus of responses from the four cheerleaders.

"It's really scary," Leanne says.

"I'm really excited!" Morgan says. "This is a one-in-alifetime opportunity."

"It doesn't feel real, though." Courtney Williams says. "It doesn't feel like it's really happening."

Leanne nods. "Yeah, I feel like it's really far away, but

it's, like, a month away."

"Yeah, but we do get to spend New Year's Eve in London," Morgan says.

And indeed, it's not all work for the girls once they arrive. They'll be taken on a tour that includes the The Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben, the Parliament Building, Westminster, Windsor Castle, and the Tower Bridge over the River Thames. The four girls and their mothers will have ample time to wander around the West End and shop in its stores. The Universal Cheerleaders Association has also reserved tickets for the All-Americans and their moms to a Beatles tribute concert.

"I feel like a lot of these girls go without family members, but the fact that all four of the moms get to go too makes it special," Cathy Willis, Leanne's mother, says.

The four girls think, too, that the possibility of an opportunity like theirs is enough to encourage others to think about joining.

"Today, one of the boys was like, 'What?! You're going to London?!' He's like, "That's insane! I want to be a cheerleader,'" Leanne says. "He did say he was going to try out one year."

"That's one way to get people to try out next year, say, "Hey, some of us got to London," says Taylor Guilbeault.

ot only will First Night River Bend feature lots of New Year’s Eve activities at Lewis and Clark Community College, but it will also feature the musical talents of Redhead

The four sisters, ages 18-24, have spent the past six years touring with their family band across the country, performing at fairs, festivals and performing arts centers.

Redhead Express is currently in the Warner Brothers Studio recording their first album with renowned producer Paul Worley, who has produced albums for the Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Collin Raye and Lady Antebellum.

The sister act will be joined on stage at First Night by their parents and their three brothers, ages 11-15, who compose The Walker Family band. The Walker family originally hails from Alaska and now lives in Nashville, Tenn.

First Night guests will get to experience the Redhead Express’s original music before it is played on the radio next spring, plus family favorites, including “Cups,” “Proud Mary,” “Stand by Your Man,” and other pop, bluegrass and country favorites and medleys.

energy, entertaining concert,” said Apryll Walker, mother and musician.

“Plus, concert goers will be able to hear new, original music by Redhead Express before it hits the air waves next year. This is truly a great opportunity to see an up-and-coming band.”

The 19th annual First Night River Bend will be a night of fun, entertainment, activities and fabulous firsts on New Year ’s Eve at the Godfrey campus of Lewis and Clark Community College.

For the first time, this year ’s family-friendly entertainment will run from 3-7 p.m., exclusively in the newly renovated Hatheway Cultural Center.

“We have seen the number of young families who attend First Night go up, while watching overall attendance numbers dwindle later in the evening,” said John Nell, director of the First Night steering committee.

“These new hours were set with those young families in mind and allow them to plan for other family activities after First Night. We are also hoping to keep families out of the cold as much as possible by keeping all the First Night fun under one roof.”

featuring live music, juggling, magic and activities for people of all ages.

First Night River Bend 2014 is a community project of Lewis and Clark Community College in conjunction with the Lewis and Clark Community College Foundation, the Village of Godfrey, WBGZ and The Telegraph.

Throughout the entire event, the Hatheway Gallery will also be abuzz with a variety of activities including face painting, hat making and other handson happenings.

Casey the Entertainer will be stilt walking and juggling, while Miss Molly and Mr. Flakes create delightful balloon art.

As usual, caricaturists Bill Michel and Mike Dooley will be set up in the Hatheway foyer to capture the smiling faces of First Night.

“I believe families will find the change refreshing and appropriate,” Nell said.

“We have kept many of the creative activities that children love while introducing new entertainers that are sure to please audience members of all ages.”

First Night buttons are currently on sale at Party Magic and all Liberty Bank locations. Buttons are $10.

The first exhibition, Nicole Eisenman: In Love with My Nemesis, includes more than 120 works, charting the development of Eisenman’s practice across painting, printmaking, and drawing from the 1990s to the present.

Over the past twenty years, Eisenman has developed a c re a t i v e a n d v e r s a t i l e v i s i o n that combines high and low culture with virtuosic skill.

Fusing centuries-old art-making conventions and a multitude of art historic influences – including impressionism, German expressionism, and twentiethcentury social realist painting – with contemporary subject matter, she depicts settings and themes as varied as bar scenes, motherhood, and the plight of the artist.

Among her core concerns a re d e p i c t i o n s o f c o m m u n i t y, identity, and sexuality.

Eisenman’s continual representation of women (both “butch” and “femme”) and female love not only imbues the practice of figurative painting with an audaciously queer bent but also recasts art history in a feminist light.

H e r w i t s p a re s n o o n e a n d nothing, and it is indeed through her humor and the discomfort caused by her work that she communicates the

multifaceted richness of the human condition. Her incisive sociopolitical critique operates through the quotidian and the absurd, in ways that are both formally playful and visually breathtaking.

Nicole Eisenman (b. 1965, Verdun, France) lives and works in New York City. Eisenman was recently awarded the Carnegie Prize for her work in the 2013 Carnegie International. Recent solo exhibitions include MATRIX 248, Berkeley Art Museum ( 2 0 1 3 ) ; ‘ Ti s b u t a s c r a t c h ’ ‘ A scratch?! “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

A considerable upgrade over the first “Hunger Games” movie, “Catching Fire” comes across more like a remake than a sequel.

In the adaptation of the second installation in Suzanne Collins’ young adult trilogy, there’s certainly plenty that has changed. Rebellion against the totalitarian rule of President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in the 12 districts of Panem is growing. Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is now a beloved hero with the weight of celebrity on her shoulders.

And Philip Seymour Hoffman, bless him, has found his way into the proceedings.

Yet the general plot — a journey from Katniss’ poor hometown of District 12 to a climactic game of human hunting in “the arena,” with high-speed train rides and training sessions in between — is identical to the first “Hunger Games.”

More has shuffled behind the camera, and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is much the better for it. Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend”) has taken over directing from Gary Ross, whose poor handling of the first film didn’t stop it from becoming a sensation. Lawrence has given the film (the budget was nearly doubled) a more settled environment heavy on greys and a more appropriately grave emotional atmosphere.

These are kids being forced to kill other kids, the franchise seems to have realized.

“Catching Fire” opens with Katniss back in District 12, haunted by the experiences of her first Hunger Games. There, too, is her flame Gale (Liam Hemsworth), who’s slaving away in the mines. (Hemsworth, a nonentity in both films, makes about as convincing a miner as Ben Stiller’s Zoolander did.)

But Katniss’ success in the Hunger Games was partly due to her for-publicity-sake romance with her co-winner Peeta (Josh Hutcherson, who seems about half the height of the screendominating Lawrence). President Snow, aware of the put-on, insists they keep up the charade to help pacify the uprising.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language.

RUNNING TIME: 146 minutes.

“Philomena”

Ask any good chef: why do some recipes work, while others, with the very same ingredients, do not? Ah, but it’s the QUALITY of the ingredients that matters, that chef will probably say.

And so it is with Stephen Frears’ “Philomena,” a film whose cinematic recipe seems tricky at best: Take a shocking and tragic tale — a true one, involving the Catholic Church, no less — and make it into a film that’s part serious drama, part jaunty road-buddy movie, and part comedy.

Such an unwieldy mix flirts with danger, even tastelessness, but “Philomena” works, thanks to the quality of its ingredients — especially the sensitive and nuanced performances by the ever-superb Judi Dench and by Steve Coogan, who also cowrote the script.

Director Frears, carefully calibrating the tone here, is in fine form as he tackles a story based on the 2009 investigative book “The Lost Son of Philomena Lee,” by Martin Sixsmith. Lee, still living today, is an Irish woman who, as a teenager, became pregnant during a fairground tryst, not even understanding the biology of such things. Rejected at home, she was sent to a convent where she endured a painful birth — and told the pain was penance for her sin — then forced to work in the laundry with other “fallen women” for years in virtual imprisonment, allowed to see her son for one hour a day.

Worse yet, the convent sold babies to wealthy Americans, and Philomena’s son, Anthony, was carried off one day as a toddler, without so much as a goodbye to his mother.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some strong language, thematic elements and sexual references.”

RUNNING TIME: 98 minutes.

"Frozen"

Instead of the bygone damsels in distress — yes we’re talking about you Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty — the female royals of “Frozen,” Disney’s latest animated wonder, are feisty, forward and independent.

Strong female leads are fitting, as “Frozen” marks the first time a female has occupied the director’s chair in the 76 years of Disney animation features. Jennifer Lee, who wrote Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” as well as the screenplay for “Frozen,” codirected the icy 3-D adventure with Disney veteran Chris Buck (“Tarzan”).

Inspired by the 19th century fairytale, “The Snow Queen,”

by Hans Christian Andersen, “Frozen” marks another Disney film modernizing one of the Danish author’s stories. “The Little Mermaid” also adapted an Andersen fable.

Eight new songs, by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, work well when paired with the stunning visuals. But none really shine with classic tour de force like a “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” — and it’s been too long since we’ve had a big Disney-stimulated hit.

But the overall message more than makes up for the film’s pitfalls. Rich in magic, perils and family ties, “Frozen” encourages us to embrace our fears, overthrow our inhibitions and find the true meaning of love.

Set in the kingdom of Arendelle, sisters Elsa (voiced by Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) are best friends who love to play in the snow. Luckily big sis Elsa can create ice and snow with her bare hands.

RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for some action and mild rude humor.

"Inside Llewyn Davis"

In an alley behind a cafe in New York’s Greenwich Village, an unidentified stranger knocks singer Llewyn Davis to his knees. Within the first 10 minutes of the Coen brothers’ latest dark comedy, the filmmakers acquaint us with the curiously obscure, as violent fits are not usually associated with folk music.

The genesis of this animosity is left unanswered until the final moments of the film, leaving the lingering off-kilter question: Why would anyone beat up a folk singer? Thus, we have the perfect onset for this bleak and witty tale of a striving musician.

Here the Coen brothers pluck at the beatnik scene of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Helmed by long-time Coen collaborator T Bone Burnett, the tunes in this film — which are performed live — bare morbid undertones that correspond with the foremost concepts of the story: poverty, abortion, disappointment and death.

As the film opens, we are introduced to our guitarstrumming lead, Llewyn Davis, who is onstage in a smokefilled dive. He is played to grungy, dark and handsome perfection by the stylish and calm Juilliard-trained Oscar Isaac. This marks the first time the Miami-bred Guatemalanborn 33-year-old has anchored a feature and he carries it off with infectious grace and grit. When he sings “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me” in these initial moments, we’re both seduced and

heartbroken.

RATED: R for language including some sexual references.

RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes.

"Out of the Furnace"

“Out of the Furnace” is an earnestly crafted, passionately acted working-class drama rusted over by its noble intentions of steel-town sympathizing.

Director Scott Cooper (whose first film, “Crazy Heart,” was also drawn to the dwindling options of an increasingly obsolete hard worker) sets his movie in Braddock, Pa., where he also shot it. The town mill hovers as the empty heart of a corroded city.

Cooper lays the atmosphere on thick, suffocating the film with worn interiors, factory smokestacks, dive bars and highway overpasses. It’s filled with tattoos, beer bottles, muscle cars, flannel shirts and, to top it off, Eddie Vedder (who opens the films with the song “Release”).

The film’s clichis are many, but few will doubt its weighty sincerity, its heavy-handed Rust Belt eulogizing.

What’s dying? The lives of blue-collar men. The film is centered on the Baze brothers, Russell (Christian Bale) and Rodney (Casey Affleck), both of whom are finding that, as their father dies of lung cancer from years at the mill, life in Braddock is dried up.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “intense sequences of violence and action, some frightening images, thematic elements, a suggestive situation and language.”

RUNNING TIME: 116 minutes.

"Saving Mr. Banks"

For most scribes who have toiled in the movie industry, portraying Hollywood as a healing paradise is roughly equivalent to regaling a lobster of the soothing properties of a boiling pot of water.

Hollywood has always, and probably will always, chew up authors. From “Sunset Boulevard” to “In a Lonely Place” to “Barton Fink,” we’ve often had the writer’s perspective on the painful life of movie scripting. Now, in Disney’s “Saving Mr. Banks,” we have the studio’s.

No one, needless to say, winds up face down in a swimming pool in the Disney version.

“Saving Mr. Banks,” directed by John Lee Hancock (a sure studio hand of inspirational tales like “The Blind Side” and “The Rookie”), is based on the true story of the tug of wills between “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) and Walt Disney (Tom Hanks). Finally drawn by Disney’s money and years of entreaties to adapt her books, the extremely particular British writer arrives in mythic 1961 Los Angeles like a dark cloud indignant of sunshine.

She peers warily at “Los Ang-uh-lees,” as she calls it, from the back window of the limo that’s been sent to pick her up.

Her chipper driver (Paul Giamatti) is infuriatingly American.

She flinches when he calls her home “Inger-land” and, worse, says “no problemo.”

It’s just the start of the unpleasantness for Travers, who recoils at the thought of handing over her very precious characters — “my family,” she says — to Disney. When she arrives in a hotel room strewn with baskets and stuffed animals, she faces a giant Mickey doll in the corner, telling him he can stay there “until you learn the art of subtlety.”

Coen Brothers refusing maturity

By JAKE COYLE Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — “If you’re trying to assign the trait of maturity to us, frankly, it won’t wash.”

A conversation with the filmmaking brothers Ethan and Joel Coen has only just gotten started when Ethan, quite gleefully, puts a stop to any discussion of growth, evolution or development.

Now in their late 50s, the Coens have a host of awards, including best picture for their tense, bone-dry Cormac McCarthy adaptation “No Country for Old Men.” Their last film, the much Oscar-nominated Charles Portis adaptation “True Grit,” was an unexpected box-office hit, earning $250 million worldwide.

Somewhat shockingly, they are — to use the much sought-after label in their “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” — bona fide.

Their latest, the folk music tale “Inside Llewyn Davis,” continues the trend of awardsseason releases with more realism than, say, the screwball of “The Hudsucker Proxy” or the surrealism of “The Big Lebowski.”

The Coens don’t dismiss the trend. They just predict its imminent expiration date.

“If you’re trying to make a developmental statement about us,” Ethan explains, “it might not ...”

“It might not stand the test of the next movie,” says Joel, finishing the sentence. They chuckle with tickled delight, like boys who are getting away with something, at the thought of their next opus. (More on that later.)

For now, there’s “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the latest zag in a career full of wholly unpredictable hopscotching through noir (“Blood Simple,” “Miller’s Crossing”), farce (”Burn After Reading,” “The Ladykillers”) and less categorical quandaries (“A Serious Man”).

Tracking the Coens is, famously, a fool’s game. What leads them down Los Angeles bowling alleys? Or into a ‘50s-era barber shop?

Aided by the Dave Van Ronk memoir “The Mayor of MacDougal Street,” they arrived at specifically 1960-61 Greenwich Village for “Inside Llewyn Davis” because it exists on the cusp of history, ahead of Bob Dylan’s arrival.

Oscar Isaac stars as the title character, a folk guitar player and singer whose beautiful playing is contrasted by his foul-mouthed, cynical downtown life, which he spends hopping from couch to couch, gig to gig. The Coens, with T Bone Burnett, fill the film with full performances of less famous songs from the era, all but one of which was filmed live (rather than to playback).

On a recent fall afternoon, the Coens granted an interview with The Associated Press at their Tribeca office, a narrow threestory apartment with editors working on the

bottom floor on a concert documentary of the movie’s music, to air on Showtime on Dec. 13.

To accommodate a reporter, Ethan lugged a chair up to the small top-floor perch where the brothers brainstorm and script.

From here their movies are born, generated from the pingponging between their similarly imaginative, comic minds.

“We were just sitting around the office talking about nothing, as we do, and (Joel) said, ‘OK, supposing it begins in an alley behind Gerde’s Folk City and somebody beats the (expletive) out of Dave Van Ronk?”’ says Ethan, while Joel laughs. “That’s the beginning of what movie?”

They start most films in this unusually specific way. “Miller’s Crossing” began with a hat floating away into the woods. “Burn After Reading” started when they pronounced that they would never, ever open a film “CIA Headquarters: Langley, Virginia.”

"Out of the Furnace" will haunt you

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge The lone new film in this quiet first week of December o p e n e d w i t h a w h i m p e r, b u t don’t let that fool you. The only thing tame about "Out of the Furnace" was its ticket sales.

The movie is a slow burn of intense brooding and anger that features some heavyweights of acting all finding something to grouse about at the same time.

The squabbling amongst the characters in the film is dynamic and brutal, often charged with psychotic twitches of drug-fueled rage. The mayhem is great and the subtlety of the pathos they are experiencing is rich. We are all focusing on American Hustle and its release in a few days, but this is Christian Bale’s other pre-

Christmas showcase for us.

The furnace of the title is a steel mill in rural New Jersey. And the guy that needs to get out of it is Russell Baze (Bale), the kindly older brother of a family that’s had mill workers going back many generations to a time when this country was a manufacturing giant. Now, they’re scattered about a bunch of row houses and dilapidated hamlets that don’t have much to offer but crumbling infrastructure and the knowledge that time is running out. Baze is a good guy. He works hard, picks up all the double shifts his coworkers don’t want, and visits his sick dad every morning. Cancer gleaned from the smelter is eating the old man away quickly and he delivers on the family promise to be there for the ones who need him. That includes Uncle Red

(Sam Shepard), but mostly refers to his little brother, Rodney, Jr. (Casey Affleck). Rodney is a runty little dude with a massive chip on his shoulder. He’s unhappy with the rough deal facing his family and his community, but suffers more than anything from the disillusionment he finds after returning from his fourth tour in Afghanistan. The twisted scar on his torso and the horror stories he infrequently recalls are reason enough to suspect that Rodney is little more than a shell of a man waiting to crack wide open.

Russell’s protective nature, one that is well known to the people he works and lives with, extends far past Rodney, his dad and uncle, and his girlfriend (Zoe Saldana).

He’s just trying to survive without getting in any body’s way. One drink too many causes

this world to shatter one night when he’s involved in a tragic auto accident. His subsequent jail term only strengthens his resolve to keep his nose clean and his brother out of trouble. Rodney, though, continues to cartwheel into a depressive funk that only mixes him further into the seedy world of backroom “Fight Club” boxing. His access to this world is John Petty (Willem Dafoe), a mid-level thug with access to all the money people from Russell’s town need to borrow to make ends meet. He’s a bad guy, but we soon find out that the people he knows are even worse. It’s once the Bazes become mixed up with the likes of Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson) and his coalbelt, mountainfolk cronies that things go to a dark and dangerous place. Rodney’s thrill-seeking

and refusal to “take a dive” get him intertwined in a world full of guns, drugs, and ash-coated madness that feels all too eerily p o s s i b l e i n o u r w o r l d t o d a y.

Harrelson’s DeGroat is a vicious son-of-a-you-know-what and the actor snarls and grunts his way through it.

I don’t know why it’s taken so long for him to get to this level in his career, but further fine work should now be expected from the Oscar nominee. "Out of the Furnace" is a tight, somewhat unhappy work, but one that will – for good or bad – haunt you for some time to come.

"Out of the Furnace" runs 127 minutes and is rated R for strong violence, language, and drug content. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

Joanie's Pizzeria in historic Soulard

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Joanie’s Pizzeria is a landmark in Soulard.

The neighborhood pizza parlor and restaurant was established inside the Soulard community near downtown St. Louis in 1994. In 2003 Joanie’s expanded with its second Soulard location, Joanie’s To-Go, specializing in carryout, delivery and catering. There is also a third location in Oakville, Mo. I have visited Joanie’s Pizzeria numerous times over the years and never had a bad experience, so in September as the St. Louis Cardinals were nearing the end of the regular season, I decided to stop by and do a review for “You Gotta Eat.” It was a great spot for my friend Kelly and I to go prior to the game due to the fact that Joanie’s offers a free shuttle to and from Busch Stadium during the Cardinals’ season. We parked our cars in Soulard for free, were able to grab a scrumptious meal and ride to the game without any headaches.

We started our dinner with a visit to the appetizer menu at Joanie’s, ordering the cheese garlic bread. It was nothing fancy, but very good.

The bread was light and fluffy and topped with a blend of cheeses. It had a very sweet taste to it. It was also accompanied by a delicious marinara dipping sauce.

After starting with the bread, we delved into our main course.

While Joanie’s offers plenty more than pizza, Kelly and I decided to stay with its staple and being the consummate gentleman that I am, I allowed Kelly to make our pizza selection. She chose a specialty pizza on the menu, Sheriff Rudy’s Double Bacon Cheeseburger. We went with a large, thick-crust pie and when it arrived we weren’t disappointed.

It was heaping with toppings;

huge chunks of hamburger, hearty slices of bacon and giant strands of onions. Sheriff Rudy’s also came with double cheese. All the ingredients were fresh and it was extremely filling. We were plenty stuffed before heading to the baseball game, which was the perfect formula to stay away from high concession stand prices.

But while the pizza is the prize at Joanie’s, it has much more to choose from. There are salad selections, pastas, calzones and a hefty sandwich portion onthe menu, not to mention a good selection of appetizers.

Starting with the appetizer menu, the cheese garlic bread that Kelly and I ordered also comes as meaty cheese garlic bread, which includes

a blend of pepperoni and sausage.

There are also bruschetta, cheese fries, buffalo wings, Cajun-battered shrimp and buffalo Cajun shrimp to name a few.

On the salad portion, there are a few selections, including the Joanie’s famous Caesar salad with their famous housemade Caesar dressing and topped with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and herb butter croutons.

Moving to the pasta choices, there is spaghetti and meatballs, baked lasagna, cannelloni and chicken alfredo to name a few, along with the chicken Margherita pasta which is made with grilled chicken breast, tomatoes and fresh basil, tossed with a white wine garlic sauce and served over penne noodles.

Under house specialties, Joanie’s offers its calzones. Each calzone is stuffed with mozzarella and ricotta cheese and your choice of two ingredients.

The sandwich menu includes some awesome selections like: the Soulard muffuleta with Genoa salami, Bavarian ham, mozzarella cheese, roasted peppers and Joanie’s marinated antipasto relish served on a traditional muffuleta roll.

There is also Uncle Pete’s meatball which is made from Uncle Pete’s family recipe passed down from generations served on a toasted baguette with Joanie’s marinara sauce and the chilled veggie sandwich, comprised of tomatoes, fresh chopped basil, roasted red peppers, red onions, lettuce and

vinaigrette dressing on a wheat hoagie.

Finally, getting back to the pizza, you can create your own or choose from the specialty section like Kelly and I did.

Some of the cool specialty pizzas include: Bobby’s BBQ Chicken Pizza, made with Maul’s sweet and smoky barbecue sauce, grilled chicken, black beans, red onions and cilantro, Franco’s Cajun Pride, composed of Cajun seasoned ground beef, green pepper, onion, black olives and cayenne pepper and the Garlic Chicken Classic, with grilled chicken breast, roasted red peppers, fresh mushrooms and roasted garlic with creamy alfredo sauce.

Joanie’s also includes a full service bar and provides entertainment for its patrons with live music. During spring and summer, there is a large patio area for customers to sit. The inside seating offers an intimate, but laid back setting. Joanie’s does a fantastic job of capturing the friendly and homey characteristics of the Soulard neighborhood. On their website, www.joanies.com, they boast that they make you “feel like a regular” even if you're not and I can attest that this is true. The service is impeccable while you’re there and the staff is always friendly.

And as far as the shuttle, it is also available for other sporting events and some concerts. Just stop by and purchase a drink or a meal and a waiter or waitress will give you a shuttle ticket.

As far as price, it’s not too bad.

Sheriff Rudy’s Double Bacon Cheeseburger pizza was $19.25 while our appetizer cost just $3.95. Not too shabby for two people. Joanie’s is also open seven days a week.

I can honestly say that Kelly and I will both return to Joanie’s. After all, it’s a great place to visit when you gotta eat.

Dining Delights Best food books of 2013 stir thoughts

By J.M. HIRSCH AP Food Editor Let's all stop being coy and fess up, shall we? The truth is, even those of us who work with cookbooks, write about cookbooks, collect cookbooks — heck, even write cookbooks ourselves — don't actually cook from cookbooks. At least not nearly as frequently as we'd like to/promise ourselves we will/tell others we do.

As food has morphed ever more into a pop culture fixture, cookbooks — with their lush photos, their provocative prose, their tempting, come hither recipes — have become the porn of the food set.

Which sounds flip, but actually is significant. For if we still love cookbooks — and by all accounts we certainly seem to — but no longer see them primarily as a source of dinner inspiration, our selection criteria also must change. A good cookbook back in the day was defined mostly by quality of the recipes alone.

That remains vital, of course, but hardly critical. Today, story often trumps recipes. A good many books in this category may not even have recipes, or at least none a home cook is expected to follow (I'm talking to you Heston Blumenthal and Ferran Adria). Not too many years ago, that would have been comical. Today?

There's an audience for that.

So it is with this mindset that I made my picks for the best food books of 2013, the ones I would hope to get or gift this holiday season.

• "Notes From the Larder" by Nigel Slater (Ten Speed Press, $40) Nigel Slater is a master of the journal-cum-cookbook format. He has an elegant simplicity of language that transports you to his garden, his kitchen, his table. "Notes From the Larder" is only the latest journal-style import from this Englishman, and it will leave you ready to dive into his previous volumes.

Slater probably is best known in the U.S. for his memoir-turned-movie "Toast," which recounts a childhood spent finding himself via food.

Books like "Notes From the Larder" make you glad he did. His recipes are simple, yet deftly draw you in. It doesn't hurt that the photography is splendid.

•"Smoke & Pickles" by Edward Lee (Artisan, $29.95) Edward Lee earned his fame on Season 9 of Bravo's "Top Chef," but he earned his credibility for his brash, yet respectful reimagining of Southern cuisine. A Korean-American who grew up in New York, Lee's only connection to the South was a road trip. But he fell in love with the culture and its food, and it shows in his cooking.

Like his Louisville, Ky., restaurant 610 Magnolia, his first cookbook, "Smoke & Pickles," is a delicious amalgam of his cultures. Pulled pork gets sauced with bourbon and black bean paste. A T-bone gets marinated with lemon grass, Asian sesame oil and peanut oil. Anyone who loves Southern cooking — or anyone who claims to "know" what Southern cooking is — will want this book.

•"The Taste of America" by Colman Andrews (Phaidon, $29.95) Colman Andrews has succeeded at something that shouldn't have been successful. He has written a reference book that reads like a storybook. His anthology of 250 classic American foods — some ingredients, some products — is a fascinating way to taste our nation's collective menu.

•"Mast Brothers Chocolate" by Rick Mast and Michael Mast (Little, Brown and Co., $40) Gratuitous, over-the-top odes to all things chocolate have become annoyingly common on the cookbook scene. It's a tired format usually built on precious, fussy recipes that rarely inspire, no matter who the author.

This book is different. The Mast brothers — known best to Brooklyn hipsters as the men behind local chocolate company Mast Brothers Chocolate — have written a book of delicious simplicity, filled with recipes so evocatively photographed and so clearly written, you will cook from it. Start slow. Try the chocolate soda. Then the chocolate crunch. No need to thank me.

•"Reasons Mommy Drinks" by

Lyranda Martin Evans and Fiona Stevenson (Three Rivers Press, $12.99) If foul language and parentingby-alcohol are things likely to offend you, give this book a pass.

But if you have embraced your potty mouth and understand that

a good drink can make far more tolerable the terrible twos right on through those horrible teens, then you will love this tiny book of cocktail recipes (and the parenting horrors that inspired them).

It's a wonderfully raunchy, funny romp through everything we know to be true about parenting. My only complaint? Daddies drink, too.

•"Eat Drink Vote," by Marion Nestle (Rodale, $18.99) The politics of food and diet can be a dense slog for all but the most committed of foodies. But Marion Nestle, one of the nation's leading thinkers on food policy, has written a book that doesn't just inform, it entertains.

Sure, there are plenty of stats and history and discouraging tales of food systems gone bad. But Nestle has paired all that with hundreds of comics and cartoons that bring those issues humorously home. It's odd to say, but readers will laugh hard as learn the sad truth about all that is wrong — and some of what's right — about the way America eats.

• "Kitchen Things" by Richard Snodgrass (Skyhorse Publishing, $29.95) Don't be fooled by this book's cover, which sells itself as "an album of vintage utensils and farm-kitchen recipes." That sounds kind of boring, and the recipes are amusing, but secondary. This book's appeal is in its gorgeous black-and-white photos of oldschool kitchen gadgets. Richard Snodgrass actually makes things like measuring spoons and meat tenderizers look sensual. The text is a pleasant blend of history and humorous back-and-forth between Snodgrass, his wife and his mother-in-law, from whose kitchen many of the gizmos come.

Religion Airport chaplains serve unique roles ATLANTA (AP) — The Rev. Frank Colladay Jr. stood at the end of the gate waiting. On the arriving plane was a passenger whose husband had just died of a heart attack on another flight.

Her name was Linda Gilbert. The two had never met before.

Colladay's parish happens to be the world's busiest airport. His flock consists of people passing through who might need comfort, spiritual advice, or someone to pray with.

On this day, a traumatized Gilbert needed even more. Colladay guided her through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, drove her in his silver Ford Fusion to the medical examiner to see her husband's body and arranged for a flight home for both of them.

"He didn't say a whole lot. But just his presence being there, it just felt comforting and reassuring," Gilbert says. "I didn't know that airports have chaplains."

Most people don't.

Airports are mini-cities with their own movie theaters, fire departments and shopping malls.

Many also have chapels, typically tiny nondenominational spaces, in out-of-the-way locations. They offer an escape from constant

gate change and security announcements and are staffed by 350 part- and full-time chaplains worldwide — Roman Catholic, Protestant and, to a lesser extent, Jewish, Muslim or Sikh.

The positions are highly sought-after and considered glamorous, with chaplains saying they love the excitement and unpredictability of airports.

The job is unlike other church assignments.

There isn't a permanent congregation. No baptisms, weddings or funerals. Instead, airport chaplains preach to a crowd that is transient by nature.

Trust must be earned quickly. There's little time for small talk. Everybody is rushing to catch a flight.

"You only get one chance to impress them; one chance to help them," says Bishop D.D. Hayes, a non-denominational pastor at DallasFort Worth International Airport. "Many times, we touch lives we never see again."

There are daily or weekly services but most ministering occurs elsewhere.

Chaplains see troops off to war and are on hand when bodies of the fallen return. They comfort fliers visiting sick relatives and those

traveling for medical treatment themselves.

During weather delays, chaplains take the heat off gate agents by standing nearby — passengers tend to be on their best behavior when in the presence of a priest.

They aren't at airports to proselytize and — surprisingly — very few passengers confess to a fear of flying. Often, the chaplains just roam terminals offering a friendly face and occasional directions. Some walk up to seven miles a day.

"When I came into the job, my predecessor said you have to buy good shoes," says the Rev. Jean-Pierre Dassonville, a Protestant who just retired after 12 years at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris.

Chaplains need outgoing personalities. They have to recognize the signs that something is wrong and know how to approach strangers.

The Rev. Wina Hordijk, a Protestant minister at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, recently saw a teenage girl sitting by herself, crying. The girl was supposed to travel throughout Europe with her boyfriend — but he dumped her at the start of the trip.

"I always have a lot of handkerchiefs in my

bag," Hordijk says.

Then there are the more serious situations.

The Rev. Jonathan Baldwin, who is assigned

by The Church of England to London's Gatwick Airport, was once asked by a couple to join them as their son and his new wife returned from their honeymoon. The groom's sister had committed suicide the day after the wedding.

Baldwin obtained a quiet room for them to meet, break the news and cry privately.

Chaplains don't just support fliers; there are also thousands of airport workers. Employees at ticket counters, security checkpoints and control towers are under extreme stress. They often need to chat with somebody independent from their job.

For those who work Sundays, the airport chapel becomes their de facto church.

"You come into a chapel, you know you're in God's house," says Vibert Edwards, who prays daily before starting his shift as a baggage handler at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

To relate, chaplains learn airport lingo, for instance calling workers who unload luggage from planes "ramp rats."
