Community welcomes Opera Edwardsville By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Inspired by a centuries-old artform, operatic tenor Chase Hopkins has returned to his hometown to share his passion for opera with the community that he loves. Opera Edwardsville, a new nonprofit arts organization, joins a community steeped in a tradition of promoting the arts in Madison County, Illinois. Hopkins, 29, founded and created Opera Edwardsville this year. Its inaugural event, “Opera Edwardsville presents Christmas at the Wildey,” introduces audiences to the world of opera in a celebration of the holiday season with traditional carols, hymns and majestic classical music, from Handel, Purcell, Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky. Hopkins, a 2008 Edwardsville High School graduate, traveled abroad for the past six years while training and performing professionally all over Europe. Hopkins’ European experience revealed to him the excitement, inspiration and impact that opera festivals have on the communities in which they are rooted, he explained. “My passion for this artform, along with my love for this community has inspired me to found and create Opera Edwardsville.” Hopkins recently returned from his third season with the Wexford Festival Opera in Ireland. The festival is situated in rural Ireland — three hours by train or bus from Dublin Airport to the small seaside town. Hopkins was inspired that this community was able to foster (over time) an opera festival that has significant scope and artistic value on the international opera scene. The festival is nestled into the small village center of Wexford town, yet has been able to build a state-of-the-art opera house where the festival produces six operas and regularly sells out to audiences from all over the world. “It is a world-class opera festival, with visitors traveling from all over the world,”

Sofia Troncoso, soprano, performs the famous “Laughing Aria” from Richard Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus.” Troncoso will perform for Opera Edwardsville’s inaugural event, “Opera Edwardsville presents Christmas at the Wildey,” a celebration of the holiday season with traditional carols, hymns and majestic classical music, from Handel, Purcell, Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky. Edwardsville native, Stephanie Hunt, a cellist, will lead the concert’s string quartet, along with Hannah Frey, violinist, Jane Price, violinist, and Eliana Haig, violist. The quartet will be featured in selections as an instrumental showcase in the concert program, as well as accompany singers in selections from Handel’s “Messiah” and holiday classics.

Hopkins recalled to The Edge. “My work at festivals, such as the Wexford Festival Opera, inspired me to imagine modeling an arts organization after these European opera festivals, tailor made for this local community.” Knowing that his hometown of Edwardsville already enthusiastically supports the arts, from the 175-year-old Edwardsville Municipal Band to the iconic Mississippi River Festival, as well the visual arts through the Edwardsville Art Center and annual Art Fair, Hopkins pursued his vision. Several businesses and individuals have stepped up as sponsors to enable this cul-

tural event, while premier restaurants will enhance Opera Edwardsville guests and patrons’ experience, preparing “Pre-Theatre Menus” for the evening prior to the “Christmas at the Wildey” concert, as a way to celebrate Opera Edwardsville’s launch. “We are grateful to see the community showing their support for Opera Edwardsville — including the generous donations of

Opera From page 2 individuals, pro bono work and sponsorship from local businesses, and now the added support of the local restaurants,” Hopkins noted. “My vision for Opera Edwardsville is an organization that utilizes the power of classical music and opera to enhance the communities in which we perform. I am grateful to find sponsors who share that vision and value Opera Edwardsville’s contribution to the cultural enrichment and community development within this region.” Participating restaurants include 1818 Chophouse, Cleveland Heath, Mike Shannon’s Grill, and Kyoto Sushi Steakhouse, with more expected to join. Hopkins has invited these participating restaurants to prepare “Pre-Theatre Menus.” “In many parts of the country and world, it’s possible to find restaurants that enjoy supporting the event through their culinary arts,” Hopkins explained. “This is just the beginning for the relationship between Opera Edwardsville and the restaurants. We’ll plan to develop the ‘Pre-Theatre Menus’ further in seasons to come.” Opera Edwardsville’s mission is to develop an opera festival for the benefit of Edwardsville and the St. Louis metro/ Metro East region, with the goals of providing musical excellence, education outreach, community development, an artistic platform and cultural enrichment. Hopkins graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s in music and a minor in business and arts administration. “I always had an interest in production and in the administrative side of music,” he said. “Opera Edwardsville is an exciting opportunity to create something using the knowledge and experience I’ve gained abroad, while utilizing my arts administration education from Northwestern.” During his freshman year at Northwestern, Hopkins met Sofia Troncoso, a Brazilian/Colombian-American singer, now based in London, praised for her “moving” and “sweet-timbered, creamy” soprano voice. Troncoso, along with baritone Evan Bravos, a Greek-American, will perform in “Christmas at the Wildey” as guest artists, joining Hopkins, a tenor. “Even then (at Northwestern), he was great at bringing people together,” Troncoso noted to The Edge. “He also had the uncanny ability to clearly visualize and execute projects. Our conversations often evolve into brainstorming sessions on a new concept, an audition, a career move, an actual move, a trip and the list goes on. “The minute Chase asked me if I’d be willing to participate in ‘Christmas at the

Hopkins landed in England, where he attended the Royal Northern College of Music to complete his Master of Music in opera performance; after which he trained at the Dutch National Opera Academy for a

Along with his training, Hopkins has performed on stages across Europe, including France, Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy and Denmark. “My performance career has enabled me to see the way in which different cultures interact with opera and classical music — and it’s more than the beautiful music,” he

The San Francisco Chronicle has praised Hopkins for his “strong performance…delivered with tenderness and gusto.” His 2018 highlights include the Britten-Pears’ recital; Jupiter in Handel’s “Semele,” with the American Bach Soloists; Septimius in Handel’s “Theodora,” with Christian Curnyn; and, Trin in Puccini’s “Fanciulla del West,” in Ireland. said. “Classical music and opera have a way of expressing aspects of life that we can all relate to — even if it seems a bit dramatic! “The music begins when words aren’t enough to describe how we feel,” he continued. “This artform is based on that need, to express beyond words and into the spiritual realm of music that resonates with us — and

brings us together. Although opera plots can seem convoluted, the stories and music that tell those plots, enable us to find empathy, even if just with a character on stage.” Opera Edwardsville aims to enrich the community, also, through education and outreach. “Through concerts, lectures, recitals,

operas, masterclasses and educational outreach programs, Opera Edwardsville will expose audiences to bold artistic ideas, powerful drama, fascinating history and global perspectives, as well as beautiful music,” he noted. Opera Edwardsville held its first masterclass last month at Edwardsville High

Randall Kahn | For The Edge Julie Tabash Kelsheimer, soprano, was a guest of Opera Edwardsville for Masterclass 2018 at Edwardsville High School last month.

For The Edge Troncoso’s 2018 season highlights include her triumph in the title role of Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea” at the Longborough Festival, in South West England county of Gloucestershire; Adele in Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus”; and, concerts in China, performing with the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra.

Opera From page 5 member and pianist for the Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition. “The masterclass is an important part of a young singer’s education,” Hopkins explained. “Singing requires very sophisticated physical training to balance technique and artistry, which comes with a great deal of pressure. Working in the masterclass setting allows a singer to perform under pressure, receive feedback and grow within that feeling of adrenaline and performance nerves. “Masterclasses offer a halfway point between the preparation of a singer in the practice room and the live performance on stage to an audience, or in audition to a panel. I believe very strongly in this process, and know that Opera Edwardsville can contribute to the development of young singers in the region — through masterclasses, lectures and opportunities that contribute to a young musicians journey of artistic development.“ Likewise, educational programming will advance Opera Edwardsville’s goals to introduce or further engage the larger community, in which individuals who are interested in opera can gain more experience and education in the artform. Another way in which Opera Edwardsville seeks to have an impact on the community is through partnerships with other nonprofits. By creating concerts and performances that are tailor made to support the efforts of other organizations, Hopkins believes Opera Edwardsville can support the hard work of many successful regional organizations.

His 2018-2019 season includes a return to Virginia Opera.

“I plan to seek collaborations with other organizations that would be interested in finding compelling, relevant and useful ways to program music that might lend a voice to another cause.” — Chase Hopkins, Opera Edwardsville

“I plan to seek collaborations with other organizations that would be interested in finding compelling, relevant and useful ways to program music that might lend a voice to another cause,” he said. “I’ve met with many of the community organizations and hope to find opportunities to utilize music to support their missions — be it historical, social, artistic, programming for the elderly, projects to engage children — in addition to performances to enrich the lives

of everyone. I’m interested in finding ways to plug opera into the many facets of our community.” Opera Edwardsville debuts at the historic Wildey Theatre, where the organization brings repertoire that adds to the diversity of live music offered through the Wildey. “I’m pleased to support the efforts of the Wildey Theatre,” Hopkins said. “Great care and hard work have gone into the theater’s restoration, and I believe Opera Edwards-

ville will play an important role in honoring the theater’s past, while creating part of its future.” “Christmas at the Wildey” begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at The Wildey Theatre, Edwardsville, Illinois. Tickets are available at wildeytheatre.com.

ISBN: 978-1-580-40680-2, and is available at bookstores nationwide and from major online booksellers. While you are waiting for your copy to arrive, here are a couple of recipes to try.

Sweet Potato Soufflé

Nonstick cooking spray 3 pounds whole sweet potatoes, washed and dried 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons low-calorie brown sugar blend (such as Splenda) 1/4 cup low-sugar (or freshly squeezed) orange juice 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup ground flaxseed 1/2 cup shelled walnut pieces 2 tablespoons buttery spread (such as Smart Balance Buttery Spread Original) 6 egg whites 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar Preheat oven to 400 F. Coat a deep, eight-inch round or square casserole dish with cooking spray. Set aside. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray. Arrange the washed and dried whole sweet potatoes (with the skins on) on the sheet, and coat generously with cooking spray. Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until tender (check tenderness by spearing the largest one with a paring knife or fork). Remove sweet potatoes from the oven and peel off the skin. In a large bowl, combine (or blend with a mixer) the roasted sweet potatoes with 1/4 cup brown sugar blend, orange juice and salt. Set aside to cool. Using a food processor or chopper, grind the walnuts, flax seed, and two tablespoons brown sugar blend together until it is the consistency of wet sand. Add the buttery spread to the mixture and pulse to incorporate (do not over-mix or it will turn into a paste). Set

aside. Combine egg whites and cream of tartar in a large glass or metal bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium speed or with a stand mixer using the whisk attachment until egg whites form soft peaks with tips that curl over when the beaters are lifted. Working in batches, incorporate 1/3 of the egg whites into the sweet potato mixture using a large flat rubber spatula, gently folding them in until combined. Repeat this process two more times until all the egg whites are incorporated into the sweet potatoes. Pour sweet potato soufflé mixture into the prepared casserole dish and top with the walnut mixture. Place the soufflé in the oven and bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 F, and continue to bake 15 more minutes. Serve hot. Chef Tip: Do not open oven during baking or the soufflé may not rise as high as it should. Note: The soufflé may deflate a little bit after baking, so it’s best served immediately, but is still OK to hold in a warming oven. Pumpkin Pudding Parfait with Gingersnaps

1 (1-ounce) package fat-free, sugar-free instant cheesecake pudding mix 1 2/3 cups skim milk 1 cup canned pure pumpkin 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt, divided 7 gingersnap cookies, crumbled

“Traditionally prepared holiday foods are full of comfort, but they also tend to be full of fat, carbs, salt and sugar. Luckily, the flavors you associate with this time of year can be transformed into healthier dishes that taste as decadent as ever.” — Lara Rondinelli-Hamilton Registered dietitian and Co-author of the “The Diabetes Cookbook: 300 Recipes for Healthy Living Powered by the Diabetes Food Hub.”

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the pudding mix and milk for two minutes. Let sit five minutes. Fold in the pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg. Fold in 1/2 cup of the yogurt and refrigerate 10 minutes. Scoop 1/2 cup pudding mixture into a parfait glass. Top with one heaping tablespoon of the remaining yogurt and one crumbled gingersnap cookie. Repeat procedure for remaining six parfaits. Note: This no-cook dessert is a great substitute

Ladies rule the night

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, December 6, 2018 • 13

By Keith Brake Contributing columnist For The Edge

Halestorm’s LZZY Hale

In This Moment’s Maria Brink

Stifel Theatre hosted a heavy metal “ladies’ night” last Thursday as Halestorm, In This Moment and New Years Day made an eagerly awaited stop in St. Louis. This tour is a bit unique in that all three of these hard-rocking bands are fronted by women — and, man, can they deliver. New Years Day started the festivities as the group from Anaheim, California, led by Ash Costello, came out swinging. Costello is a charismatic and powerful vocalist, with commanding stage presence. Costello goes all in, whipping her split-two-tone red-and-black hair to the heavy hitting music when she’s not singing. By the time New Years Day wrapped up, the big Stifel crowd was more than ready to take on the heavy metal spectacle that is In This Moment. Led by Maria Brink, In This Moment is a band like few others one will ever observe. Vocally, Brink is as good as they come, being able to deliver note after note of perfection, in a styling that is all her own; powerful, unique and, at times, astounding. The band has a stage show that rivals the likes of Alice Cooper, as far as props and cinematic elements — not in lieu of solid musical abilities, but rather in addition. Photos by Keith Brake of Keith Brake Photography | For The Edge In This moment delivers on every single level during their performances and they had the St. Louis audience raising the roof of the Stifel Theatre with thunderous applause. Brink engaged the audience and thanked them for showing such love and attention to their set. Even fans who had never witnessed the spectacle before, roared with appreciation. And, with this monstrous performance in the books, the evening still had more to offer as fans readied itself for the one and only LZZY Hale. Hale is a powerhouse when she takes the stage, both as a guitarist and a vocalist. Halestorm is not in any way as theatrical as In This Moment, but that really didn’t matter as Hale, her brother, Arejay Hale, and the rest of the band took the stage and owned it! Halestorm is a straight-forward guitarcentric rock-and-roll band that has elements of years gone by mixed with some current flare and sultry lyrics. LZZY exudes confidence and charisma as she fronts the group. Guitar prowess, powerhouse vocals and the look of a classic rock goddess, LZZY has it all. Halestorm carried the crowd through the evening with energy and style, leaving the fans New Years Day’s Ashley Costello more than satisfied with the night.

YMCA Offers Help to Families During Holidays By Julia Biggs, jbiggs.edwi@gmail.com EDWARDSVILLE — With the holidays quickly approaching, the Edwardsville YMCA has the answer for parents needing a few hours of kid-free time. The YMCA is offering its annual Holiday Hoopla – Parents Night Out Holiday Helper from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at its Meyer Center, 7348 Goshen Road, Edwardsville. Bicycles for Boys & Girls from the Freer Sisters and Community

Cookies & Cocoa Makes an Impact on Community Christmas Donations ‘A very successful night’ By Jill Moon, jill.moon@hearst.com

ALTON — The 11th annual Cookies and Cocoa raised $3,050 and brought in tons of toys, coats and bicycles. “There will be a lot of happy kids Christmas morning,” said host Freer Auto Body’s Margaret Freer. “I cannot thank the community enough for always supporting us and helping make a difference. We are blessed in so many ways, we are grateful we can help others.” Cookies and Cocoa is an event for the United Way’s and The Telegraph/Intelligencer’s Community Christmas, where the public drops off donations and enjoys homemade cookies, cocoa and good will. “We have supported Community Christmas for 27 years. This is our favorite community project,” said Freer, whose granddaughters Taylor and Lily Freer helped serve the holiday goodies to guests on Nov. 29 at the body shop, festively decorated for Christmas. “The need is even greater this year. Lots of kids would not have Christmas if it were not for the giving people in our community during Community Christmas.” Taylor and Lily sponsor and host their own event, Christmas in July, for Community Christmas during the summer. This year, they raised $40,900 at that event, which gives the giving event for families in need a jump start, well before it officially starts at the first of November. Phillips 66, based in Wood River, donated the cardboard donation boxes again this year and Edwardsville High School students continued with the tradition of prepping the boxes. Alton High School also contributes to Community Christmas through its annual non-perishable food drive, which provides 90 percent of the food donations for the program. Freer Auto Body is one of the largest contributors to the United Way’s and The Telegraph/ Intelligencer’s Community Christmas, which collects items all over the Madison and Jersey counties’ regions through business collection centers and individuals. Reach Jill Moon at 618-208-6448 and Twitter @jill_moon.

Pictured left to right is Steve Schwegel, owner of Alton Physical Therapy; Mike Turk, a Freer family friend; Ed Schwegel; J.T. File, an Alton Physical Therapy employee; and, John Schwegel. Not pictured is John Hamilton. These gentlemen took nearly two hours assembling the bicycles that are part of donations for Community Christmas. Lily and Taylor Freer, along with their cousin, Emily King, shopped on Black Friday and purchased 23 bikes for the giving event. Also, the Schwegels donated three bikes and and Hamilton one, as well as the Steve Dale family for a total of 31 bikes so far.

Arguments in ‘Serial’ case focus on lawyer, alibi witness By David McFadden and Brian Witte Associated Press ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Roughly two years after a new trial was ordered, Maryland’s highest court on Thursday heard arguments in their review of the high-profile case of a man whose murder conviction was chronicled in the hit “Serial” podcast that attracted millions of armchair detectives. Tasked with upholding the retrial order for Adnan Syed or reviewing a decision that could reinstate a conviction, Maryland’s Court of Appeals heard about an hour’s worth of arguments in the long-running case. Syed was convicted in 2000 of strangling his high school sweetheart and burying her body in a Baltimore park. He’s been serving a life sentence ever since. But a Baltimore judge vacated his conviction two years ago and a court ordered a new trial after concluding that his trial lawyer was ineffective. The state appealed. Earlier this year, the special appeals court upheld the lower court’s ruling. The state appealed that decision, too. On Thursday, state prosecutor Thiru Vignarajah acknowledged that the late trial lawyer for Syed did not contact an alibi witness but he asserts that the attorney understood the “gist” of what that witness, Asia McClain, might have told her at the time. The attorney in question, Cristina Gutierrez, died of a heart attack in 2004, about four years after Syed was convicted of murdering 18-year-old Hae Min Lee. “The record is not silent on whether or not Ms. McClain was contacted. The state agrees with that. The record is silent on the critical question of why,” he said, suggesting that it is not clear why Gutierrez decided to take one investigative path over another and asserting that it’s wrong to conclude that Syed’s constitutional right to effective counsel was violated. In 2016, a lower court ordered a retrial for Syed on grounds that Gutierrez didn’t contact McClain and provided ineffective counsel. The defense team countered that it’s entirely irrelevant why Gutierrez failed to contact McClain, who said she saw Syed at a library about the same time prosecutors say his exgirlfriend was killed in 1999. Defense attorney Catherine Stetson told Maryland’s highest court that Syed’s original lawyer’s failure to contact the witness were “objectively unreasonable” and any possible reasons don’t matter. She said Gutierrez “had an obligation to pursue that witness,” among others. By late Thursday morning, the appeals panel of seven judges wrapped up the day’s oral arguments. It’s not clear when their

The arguments in the Maryland appeals court brought spectators from out of state. Chris Hendrixson drove from Cincinnati, Ohio, to observe the hearing and perhaps meet some of the people he’s heard about on the podcast. “Like so many people, we just became captivated by this case and this story through ‘Serial,’” Hendrixson said outside the Annapolis courthouse. University of Baltimore law professor David Jaros told The Associated Press that the fact that a lower court had found that there was “ineffective assistance of counsel” was itself remarkable since it happens so rarely. That alone makes Syed’s case something of an outlier, he said. “Ineffective assistance of counsel claims are exceedingly hard to bring. And the bar for what is an effective assistance of counsel is remarkably and shockingly low, with courts actually holding that defendants had effective representation even though their

Brian Witte | AP Shamim Rahman, the mother of Adnan Syed, wipes away a tear outside the Maryland Court of Appeals on Nov. 29, 2018, in Annapolis, Md., after attending arguments in Maryland’s highest court reviewing a decision that could reinstate Syed’s conviction for the slaying of his high school sweetheart. The highprofile case was chronicled in the hit “Serial” podcast.

lawyer fell asleep at the trial,” Jaros said in a phone interview. But what makes Syed’s case particularly notable is the huge amount of attention it has received. Syed became a sort of cause celebre due to the hugely popular “Serial” podcast, which debuted in 2014 with its entire first season dedicated to the case. The show shattered podcast-streaming and downloading records. “Serial” revealed little-known evidence, raising new questions about the case and whether Syed was indeed guilty. Rabia Chaudry, a staunch supporter of Syed’s who brought his case to the attention of the host of “Serial” and also wrote the 2016 book “Adnan’s Story: The Search for Truth and Justice after Serial,” said Syed is feeling positive about his fate. “A few years ago, Adnan thought that he has to come to terms with maybe dying in prison, and now he feels like there’s a chance that he’s going to come home. He feels good. We all feel good,” Chaudry said.

Oprah offers rousing tribute to Mandela in S. Africa visit

By Christopher Torchia Associated Press JOHANNESBURG— Oprah Winfrey on Thursday delivered a rousing tribute to Nelson Mandela, a century after he was born, and urged the youth of South Africa and beyond to overcome failure and trauma on the road to accomplishing their goals. “Your day will come. I applaud your resilience,” Winfrey told a cheering crowd in Soweto. “I say there’s no such thing as failure. Failure is just a mistake trying to move you in a better direction.” The philanthropist and former talk show host, who opened an academy for girls in South Africa a decade ago, acknowledged the high unemployment, poverty and other social challenges persisting in the country that held its first allrace elections in 1994 after the end of white minority rule. But Winfrey, who said she was visiting South Africa for the 36th time, told young people not to give up. “Because it is your fresh perspectives that are going to bring about unprecedented innovation for this country. We need you.” The Nelson Mandela Foundation co-hosted the event, one of a series of activities honoring Mandela this year. The anti-apartheid leader and South Africa’s first black president died in 2013 at age 95. Winfrey said she stayed with Mandela and his wife Graca Machel for 10 days during one of her visits. Mandela spoke about his many years in prison during apartheid as well as his concern about the corrosive effect of poverty, she said. “I loved him so and he was my favorite mentor because he was a man who could have sought revenge, but instead he sought reconciliation,” Winfrey said. Mandela “could have crushed his opponents with his power. But instead he chose to defeat them without ever dishonoring them.” Machel, an advocate for women’s and children’s rights, joined Winfrey on the stage and also spoke about hardship. “We are a wounded society,” Machel said, noting pervasive violence against women and children.

Joyce Carol Oates views past via future in latest novel By Christina Ledbetter Associated Press “Hazards of Time Travel” (Ecco), by Joyce Carol Oates In Joyce Carol Oates’ future America, history and free thought are off-limits. Thus, high school senior Adriane Strohl is arrested for treasonous speech when it’s revealed that her valedictory address is comprised of questions that her classmates haven’t the nerve to ask. While the curious student isn’t “deleted,” as some have been, she’s sent into exile 80 years into the past to the idyllic town of Wainscotia, Wisconsin. Here, Adriane will face the “Hazards of Time Travel.” Armed with firm rules (no questions, no intimate relationships, no provision of future knowledge, among others), a fake birth certificate, a vague backstory and one box of secondhand clothing, Adriane enters her freshman year at Wainscotia State University. Oates doesn’t squander much print on obvious wonderments in this setting. Save for puzzlement over a typewriter and the oddity of witness-

ing her housemates smoke cigarettes free from worry, Adriane’s biggest surprises comes in the classroom. Here, while struggling to intellectually find her place, she falls in love with a fellow exile, complicating her existence in a myriad ways. Desperate for intimacy, yet unable to attain it without fear of execution, loneliness suffocates this protagonist. All the while, her classes, art and limited relationships stimulate her thinking in ways she’s never before experienced, creating a love story wrapped in psychological turmoil. Imagery takes a back seat to intellectual discourse. While readers receive a clear picture of the university campus where Adriane, now dubbed “Mary Ellen,” resides, showy descriptions are limited. In their place are professors’ lectures along with Adriane’s bewilderment and ever-growing skepticism over her new home. What starts as a familiar dystopian story line morphs into a tale so perplexing one shouldn’t read this book alone. Cerebral book clubs, clear your calendars.
