itro Circus founder, ringleader and worldclass athlete Travis Pastrana today announced that Nitro Circus Live (www.nitrocircus.com) is returning to North America with a 2015 U.S. tour, visiting 14 cities including St. Louis’ Scottrade Center on May 19.

Nitro Circus Live, the action sports spectacle that is a worldwide phenomenon, features more than 40 of the world’s best action sports athletes performing daring and record-breaking tricks in freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding.

People People planner OMNIMAX film captures unseen world

A new giant screen film adventure takes audiences on an extraordinary journey into unseen worlds and hidden dimensions beyond our normal vision to uncover the mysteries of things too fast, too slow, too small or simply invisible. On October 10, 2014, the Saint Louis Science Center ’s OMNIMAX® Theater will premiere Mysteries of the Unseen World, an original production by National Geographic Entertainment and Days End Pictures, narrated by Forest Whitaker.

Created by an award-winning veteran film team, the new 40-minute large format experience is produced by Jini Durr (“Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure”) a n d L i s a Tr u i t t ( “ M y s t e r i e s o f E g y p t ” ) a n d d i re c t e d b y Lou i s S c h w a rt z b e rg (“ Di s n e y Nature: Wings of Life”). Mysteries of the Unseen World uses innovative high-speed and time-lapse photography, electron microscopy, and nanotechnology, to transport audiences to an enthralling secret w o r l d o f n a t u re , e v e n t s a n d breathtaking phenomena not visible to the naked eye.

“Mysteries of the Unseen World has that ‘wow’ factor that will impress adults and children,” said Jackie Mollet, Managing Director Visitor Services at the Saint Louis Science Center. “Seeing these amazing images will give you a new appreciation for the world around us. The technological advances used to capture these images are aweinspiring as well. ” INVISIBLE: We see only a fraction of the millions of wavelengths in the vast electromagnetic spectrum—the rainbow of light waves called visible light. The film shows audiences what it would be life if we had X-ray vision, or infrared vision like a mosquito, how a bee’s eyes see through ultraviolet light, what Gamma rays, microwaves and radio waves show us, and more.

mundane events that happen too slowly for humans to perceive. The film shows plants creeping toward the sun and astonishingly complex “slime mold” searching for food.

On a grander scaled, time-lapse allows audiences to see our planet in motion—from the vast and relentless sweep of nature to the restless movement of humanity.

TOO FAST: High-speed cameras do the opposite of time-lapse, revealing secrets from the super-fast world of nature. The film shows slow motion sequences of events that happen too quickly for human perception: a rattlesnake strike; drug cymbals reverberating; a Eurasian Eagle Owl, the world’s largest, flexing its wings; a basilisk or Jesus lizard running on the surface of water; popcorn popping; lightning rising upwards from the ground as well as striking from the sky.

TOO SMALL: The film also peers into the world of wonders too small for the human eye to see—from the minute structures on a butterfly’s wing and the tiny organisms that inhabit the human body all the way down to nano-scale structures. See how electron microscopes create images that magnify things by as much as a million times—revealing a world that is both bizarre and beautiful.

Mysteries of the Unseen World then moves from the familiar events of everyday life to the building blocks of matter itself.

The filmmakers worked with a 3-D medical animation company to depict the atom-scale realm of nanoscience and potential innovations in nanotechnology. In a complex zoom sequence, the shot moves in on a spider, then a strand of its silk, then into the silk itself where audiences see a bacterium. The camera then zooms even deeper, in on a virus on the bacterium, then into the DNA of the virus and finally into the actual atoms of the DNA. “Mysteries of the Unseen World immerses audiences in mindbending dimensions that enhance our understanding of the planet and inspire people with the wonder

and possibilities of science,” said Lisa Truitt, president of National Geographic Entertainment.

“The premise of this new giant screen film experience is looking at the world through a variety of imaging technologies that allow audiences to see beyond what they can with the naked eye and gain a new vision of the world around them,” said producer Jini Durr.

Mysteries of the Unseen World is funded in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation and generous support from Lockheed Martin and FEI, a manufacturer of electron microscopes.

MoBOT to host Garden Glow

The Missouri Botanical Garden is excited to announce its plans for an expanded “Garden Glow 2014,” the Garden’s second annual winter light exhibit. Visitors will have the opportunity to stroMBG Garden Glowll through the Garden at night surrounded by a spectacle of unique light installations. The exhibit will open Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 and run through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

The show features over a half million lights illuminating the Garden as well as loads of engaging activities for visitors of all ages.

The light display will adorn the Garden’s most iconic locations including the Climatron, Kaeser Memorial Maze, the Central Axis, Tower Grove House, Shoenberg Fountain and the Cleveland Gate House.

More than over 600,000 lights 200,000 more lights than last year have been added, and walkways will once again be transformed into multi-colored light tunnels creating an explosion of visual magic. Photo opportunities will be plentiful throughout the display from the popular “Glowmen Glen,” to the “Kiss Goodnight” and a new “Snow Globe.” Even more traditional displays have been added such as candlelight village displays and

carolers – sure to delight crowds of all ages.

The exhibit will also include an interactive area where visitors can Decorate life-size snowmen, creating a fun photo opportunity.

Food and drinks will be available at a number of locations on the grounds including stations located on the Central Axis featuring fire pits for s’more-making.

“Our members, visitors, staff and volunteers were overwhelmed with the fantastic display during our inaugural year,” said Missouri Botanical Garden President Peter Wyse Jackson. “Garden Glow is a destination for St. Louisans and visitors and this year promises an even bigger and better experience.”

Special Glow gear will be sold giving show attendees an opportunity to become a part of the fun.

Tickets are now on sale for Garden Glow 2014. Tickets make a unique and treasured holiday gift. Tickets are date-specific and sold in limited quantities. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.mobot.org/glow. In an effort to reduce waste, wristbands will not be utilized this year. Timed

ticketing will keep lines shorter and more efficient. Visitors are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online for speedier admission to the exhibit.

People People planner Lafayette Square to host Holiday Parlor Tour

Lafayette Square will host their annual Holiday Parlor Tour on Sunday, December 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors will enjoy the sights, sounds, and scents of a Victorian wonderland as they tour ten Decorated homes. The tour will also feature carriage rides around Lafayette Park, trolley rides to tour destinations, holiday caroling, and live music.

This year ’s Wonderland will feature holiday magic in displays of gingerbread ornaments and houses created by local bakers, chefs, and families. In the early days, gingerbread masters had the exclusive rights to m a k e g i n g e r b re a d — e x c e p t a t Christmastime when everyone was allowed to make it as gifts for children and adults. During the tour, visitors will be invited to Decorate their own special gingerbread ornaments.

The Holiday Parlor Tour is presented by the Lafayette Square Restoration Committee, a notfor-profit organization founded in 1971. It seeks to facilitate the preservation and redevelopment of Lafayette Square, respecting its special historic character and enhancing its overall livability.

Lafayette Square was added to

the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and has been named one of the “prettiest painted places in America”.

The Hett announces 2014-15 schedule

The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts’ 2014-2015 season presents local and returning favorites and some well-known performers and speakers making their Hett debut.

All programs are open to the public and held at the 488-seat performing arts center at McKendree University in Lebanon, Ill. “Many programs always sell out early so I always advise that you mark your calendar and plan to purchase your tickets early,” said Peter Palermo, director of The Hett.

The instantly recognizable music of Tchaikovsky is set against the wonderfully dark story of good against evil in one of the most famous and beloved of all ballets.

It seems only a few weeks ago that John Davidson was playing the season finale for the Greater Alton Concert Assocation. The Who, one of rock’s most legendary and defining bands, will celebrate their 50-year legacy when they bring their “THE WHO HITS 50!” tour to North America in 2015.

Music Tuning in Sheldon to host Patterson Hood

The Sheldon and 88.1 KDHX present Patterson Hood and special guest Justin Kinkel-Schuster (of Water Liars), Saturday, December 20 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. A native of Muscle Shoals, AL, acclaimed singer/songwriter Patterson Hood is best known as a founding member of the band Drive-By Truckers. Hailing from a musical family – Hood’s father David was a member of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section – Hood began performing and writing songs at the age of 8. In contrast to the hard-driving sound of the Drive-By Truckers (DBT), Hood’s solo work features poignant lyrics and acoustic arrangements, informed by his personal experiences with family, relationships and career.

In 2012, Hood released his third solo album, Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance, that enlisted the talents of all of his DBT bandmates. The album began as a novel about a particularly dark time in his life, but when inspiration to write dried up, he shifted the themes of the book over to these songs.

Peabody to host Compton Heights Concert Band

St. Louis’ dynamic 60 piece Compton Heights Concert Band, famous for its family friendly summer pops concerts “Musical Mondays” series in Tower Grove Park, presents its 16th Annual Holiday Pops Spectacular at the Peabody Opera House, Tuesday, December 23, 2014, 7:30 PM, one performance only, featuring tenor Hugh Smith, much beloved by St. Louis audiences since his stunning appearance here in 1996 with the St. Louis Symphony and Richard Hayman.

Religion Religion briefs Israel, Palestinians react to deadly attack on Jerusalem synagogue

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel is retaliating for the deadly attack on a Jerusalem synagogue that killed three Americans and a Briton.

Tuesday's attack, carried out by two Palestinians with meat cleavers and a gun, happened in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood that has a large population of English-speaking immigrants.

The attackers were then killed by police.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the homes of the attackers to be demolished, along with the homes of Palestinians who carried out other recent attacks.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack. But Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, praised it. And dozens of people took to the streets of Gaza to celebrate.

Meanwhile, thousands of people attended a joint funeral for three of the victims outside the synagogue where the attack took place.

Evangelical pastor addresses Vatican conference

VATICAN CITY (AP) — An American evangelical leader has urged his fellow clerics at a Vatican conference to be true to the Bible's teachings on sex and marriage.

The Rev. Rick Warren is among representatives of 14 religions at the conference on the "complementarity" of men and women in marriage and the family. Participants at the gathering believe men and woman have different God-given roles in marriage and the family.

Warren, who pastors one of America's largest Protestant churches, said the Bible defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman. He added, "When God's word is clear, we must not, we cannot, back up, back down, back off, backslide or just give in."

Warren encouraged religious leaders to celebrate traditional marriage and its benefits to men, women and children.

Pope Francis opened the three-day conference on Monday, Declaring that children have the right to grow up with a mother and father.

Pope Francis confirms trip to the United States

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says next year's visit by Pope Francis will be the largest event in the city's modern history.

The pontiff confirmed Monday that he will make his first papal visit to the United States with the trip to Philadelphia in September for the World Meeting of Families. It's a conference held in a different city every three years to celebrate the importance of family.

Officials have said the meeting could attract more than 1 million people.

Hotels within a 10-mile radius of center city Philadelphia have already sold out.

It will be the first papal visit to the United States in eight years.

Francis is also expected to visit New York City and Washington D.C., but Vatican officials aren't yet confirming those legs of the trip.

"Interstellar"

Since his breakthrough with the backward-running "Memento," Christopher Nolan has made a plaything of time.

In "Interstellar," he slips into its very fabric, shaping its flows and exploding its particles. It's an absurd endeavor. And it's one of the most sublime movies of the Decade.

As our chief large-canvas illusionist, Nolan's kaleidoscope puzzles have often dazzled more than they have moved, prizing brilliant, hocus-pocus architecture over emotional interiors. But a celestial warmth shines through "Interstellar," which is, at heart, a father-daughter tale grandly spun across a cosmic tapestry.

There is turbulence along the way. "Interstellar" is overly explanatory about its physics, its dialogue can be clunky and you may want to send composer Hans Zimmer's relentless organ into deep space. But if you take these for blips rather than black holes, the majesty of "Interstellar" is something to behold.

The film opens in the near future where a new kind of Dust Bowl, one called "the blight," brings crop-killing storms of dust upon the Midwest farm of engineer-turned-farmer Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and his two children, the adventuresome 10-year-old Murph (Mackenzie Foy) and the 15-year-old budding farmer Tom (Timothee Chalamet). The rustic homestead, where Cooper and his father-in-law (John Lithgow) drink beer on the porch, recalls the Indiana home of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" — an early hint that "Interstellar" — moving and sentimental — will be more Spielberg (who was once attached to direct) than Kubrick.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some intense perilous action and brief strong language."

"Big Hero 6"

As the Disney-Marvel mash-up "Big Hero 6" moves toward its big-action finale, the images will look strikingly familiar.

A supervillain wreaks havoc. A portal to another dimension looms. A showdown goes airborne over a metropolis.

It could be the finale of a dozen superhero films, with one difference: "Big Hero 6" is animated. But the majority of comicbook films are also computer-generated, particularly their large set pieces. Never has that been clearer than witnessing just how similar such scenes look as out-and-out cartoons. It's a little like seeing that the superhero has no clothes.

The 3-D "Big Hero 6" is loosely based on a little-known Marvel comic about a team of superheros. Crafting a more kidfriendly version, Disney (which owns Marvel) has focused on one of the heroes, the aptly named Hiro Hamada (voiced by Ryan Potter).

With his older brother, Tadashi (Daniel Henney) and their aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph), the 14-year-old Hiro lives in San Fransokyo, a beautifully rendered fusion of Tokyo and San Francisco, full of both nighttime neon and steep-hilled, Bayarea panoramas.

Hiro, whose parents died when he was a toddler, is an avid gamer happy to use his technical wizardry hustling unwitting competitors in underground "bot fights." His tiny, gingerbread man-sized robot makes mincemeat of more hulking machines.

"RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action and peril, some rude humor and thematic elements."

RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes.

You can take the man away from the humor. But you clearly can't always take the humor from the man.

This gratifying principle proves true both for the Iranianborn Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari, who was imprisoned for 118 days in Tehran and accused of being a spy, and of Jon

Stewart, who captures Bahari's harrowing tale in "Rosewater," a clear-headed, sensitive and thoroughly impressive directorial debut for the Comedy Central host.

Bahari and Stewart, it's clear, share a sense that humor has a place even in the darkest circumstances — that it can soothe and even salvage the human spirit. And thus, in the bleak dankness of a prison cell, we're confronted with a truly laugh-out-loud vision of New Jersey — Stewart's much-maligned home state — as the prisoner entices his interrogator with a view of the Garden State as a sort of sexparadise-on-earth, where young women give erotic massages all day, and pleasure reaches such heights, it can even kill a man.

That could easily be a skit on "The Daily Show," but the fact that Bahari's Revolutionary Guard interrogator — a man he knew as "Rosewater" for the scent of his cologne — truly was bizarrely obsessed with New Jersey is one of the many stunning elements of the journalist's story, which began when he left his London home in 2009 for what he thought was a brief reporting trip for Newsweek.

That year's presidential vote pitted hard-line incumbent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against reformist candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, and when Ahmadinejad won, hundreds of thousands of Iranians rose up in protest. Bahari, who'd stayed on for more reporting, was arrested and accused of being a spy — for the CIA, the Mossad, and various others. The "evidence" included a clip of him being interviewed in a "Daily Show" skit with comedian Jason Jones.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language including some crude references, and violent content."

RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes.

"The Homesman"

"There's been some trouble about the women hereabouts," says John Lithgow's plains preacher in Tommy Lee Jones' "The Homesman."

The hereabouts is a tiny, hardscrabble settlement in the Nebraska Territory, sometime around 1860. On the desolate prairie, a handful of hardened settlers try to eek something out of the dry land. Going West never looked like more a questionable Decision.

The directional movement of "The Homesman," however, is east. When three of the town's women (Miranda Otto, Grace Gummer and Sonja Richter) lose their minds, it's Decided that they must be taken to a church in Iowa, across the Missouri River.

Each driven mad — one by child-killing diphtheria, another by the constant rape of a cruel husband, all by the acrid isolation — they're the seldom seen victims of the male pioneers usually glorified in Westerns, collateral damage to an ill-conceived Manifest Destiny.

The town's men (Jesse Plemons, William Fitchner, David Dencik) aren't up for the monthlong journey by wagon, so the task falls on the sturdiest resident, Mary Bee Cutty (Hilary Swank). She lives "uncommonly alone," she says, with a twinge of shame, fastidiously running her farmstead. When she proposes to a potential mate, the dimwitted man turns her down, saying he'll go back east for a wife, and besides, she's too plain and too bossy.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "for violence, sexual content, some disturbing behavior and nudity."

RUNNING TIME: 120 minutes.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"

field shattering arrow left the society in turmoil. The desperate act was perceived as subversion, inciting populist uprisings and devastating counter attacks by the governing elite.

Thus, revolution is on the horizon in the franchise's third installment, "Mockingjay - Part 1," and it all hinges on Katniss, the unwitting face and spirit of the movement. You see, Katniss, much like the movie star actress who plays her, is just generally liked. Everything she does is slapped with meaning and significance, regardless of her intentions. She has become the property of the people.

This has always been clear to Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who aims to use her as a propaganda machine. But there's a problem: the girl on fire has flamed out.

In the chaos that followed the conclusion of the second film, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) was captured by the Capitol, District 12 was destroyed (though Katniss' mother, sister and the steely jawed Gale (Liam Hemsworth) escaped alive), and Katniss was taken by the militaristic District 13. Their President, Alma Coin, (franchise newcomer Julianne Moore) needs her to be their poster girl.

"Mockingjay - Part 1" is, ultimately, a slow-burn portrait of the repeated rise and fall of dystopia's most reluctant hero, nimbly told through its examination of the mechanics of propaganda. With the help of Plutarch, Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) and the toned-down (but still delightful) Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), Katniss attempts to serve the cause in her own way.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "intense sequences of violence and action, some disturbing images and thematic material."

RUNNING TIME: 123 minutes.

"Penguins of Madagascar"

For a movie that's more paint by numbers than Picasso, "Penguins of Madagascar" begins with something completely unexpected: a Werner Herzog voiceover.

Parodying his own work and documentary films' obsession with the flightless birds, the German filmmaker gives an auspiciously clever start to a movie targeted toward the under 10 set. It's a little wink to the adults in the audience right at the front.

But don't be fooled. This movie is almost exclusively and unapologetically for tots. Kids will no doubt be amused by the exhausting madcap antics of the cuddly breakout stars of the popular "Madagascar" films. Parents: probably less so.

The story reintroduces audiences to the illustrious spy team, giving penguins Skipper (Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), Rico (Conrad Vernon) and Private (Christopher Knights) a bit of an origin story before blasting them back into their espionage work.

After an amusing heist, the penguins are taken captive by the evil octopus Dave (John Malkovich). It's revealed that Dave (aka Dr. Octavius Brine) is out for revenge against all penguins for being the more popular and beloved attractions at zoos.

The brothers-in-arms manage to break out of Dave's tentacled grasp in an imaginative high-speed gondola chase through the Venice canals. When the thrifty penguins are backed into a corner, they're relieved when The North Wind, an elite special ops team, wafts in for a stylish rescue.

Led by the debonair Agent Classified (a charmingly zany Benedict Cumberbatch), the James Bond-inspired superspies form a nebulous alliance with the penguins in order to track down the diabolical Dave.

"Penguins of Madagascar" RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America "for mild action and some rude humor."

Stewart displays sure hand in film

In bringing Bahari's memoir, "Then They Came For Me," to cinematic life, one of Stewart's best choices was to cast the wonderfully expressive Gael Garcia Bernal.

As Bahari, the Mexican star manages a potent mix of determination and sensitivity, courage and yet clear vulnerability and increasing fear,

all tempered with impishness, too. (Check out his blissful, solitary dance to a Leonard Cohen song.)

As the film's script, written by Stewart, makes clear, much of the torture to which Bahari was subjected was psychological.

Worse than the beatings was the fact of never knowing how long the ordeal would last, or whether it would ever indeed end.

As Rosewater, the excellent Danish actor Kim Bodnia avoids easy caricature in his portrayal of a man whose career depends on getting that confession. There's a very brief reference to Rosewater's life outside the notorious Evin prison — a phone call in which he assures a loved one that everything will be different after this case.

Cumberbatch shines as codebreaker

By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press 'Tis clearly the season for Oscarworthy performances by British actors playing mathematical geniuses facing daunting personal odds.

Sound overly specific? Consider: A few weeks ago we had "The Theory of Everything," starring Eddie Redmayne as the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking. And now we have Benedict Cumberbatch in "The Imitation Game" as Alan Turing, the man chiefly responsible for cracking the vaunted Enigma code used by the Germans in World War II. But even though Turing literally changed the course of history — Winston Churchill said he'd made the greatest single contribution to the Allied victory — and, by the way, ALSO created one of the first modern computers, you may well have never

heard of him.

That would be reason enough to applaud the arrival of "The Imitation Game," directed by Morten Tyldum and written by Graham Moore based on a 1983 book by Andrew Hodges. But though it often feels like your basic high-brow British biopic, the film also happens to boast impeccable acting, especially

by Cumberbatch, who masterfully captures the jittery, nervy brilliance of a man whose mind could bring down an enemy yet couldn't process simple human interactions.

Was Turing autistic, or did he have Asperger's syndrome? Who knows — today we'd probably say he was "on the spectrum." He's a man who can't coherently answer whether he wants a sandwich for lunch. At the same time, he's conceiving a machine that will somehow defeat the Germans' own cipher machine,

the Enigma, which uses code that changes every 24 hours, rendering traditional decrypting methods useless.

As we learn about this painful duality in Turing's life, we also learn he was gay, in an era when homosexual activity was criminalized in Britain. After the war, he was prosecuted for indecency.

Given a choice of "chemical castration" or prison, he chose the former. He committed suicide at 41, a cyanide-laced apple by his bedside.

Oddly, though, the film addresses Turing's death only with a quick line in the postscript, and no word on the method. It's a strange omission — particularly given that Turing was said to have been fascinated by the "Snow White" story.

We begin after the war, with the police investigating a mysterious break-in at Turing's home and

wondering what this fellow's about (they don't yet know about his role in the war). Soon we flash back to 1939, and younger Turing's job interview with the commander running the secret codebreaking program (a nicely crusty Charles Dance). Given Turing's dreadful personal skills, it doesn't go well.

But he's hired, and immediately starts alienating his colleagues, especially the charismatic Hugh Alexander (Matthew Goode, excellent and also perhaps the best-looking mathematician ever portrayed onscreen). (Well, at least until Keira Knightley makes her entrance in this film.)

Turing is ridiculed for insisting on building his machine, taking up time and money while soldiers are dying.

Denied funding, he makes a direct plea to Churchill, who puts him in charge. That's when he hires Joan

Clarke (an appealing Knightley), the only woman on the team and his eventual fiancee.

Still, things go badly, until an offhand remark by a woman in a bar makes Turing realize a way to speed up the machine's activity. Eureka!

The story gets more interesting as the team realizes it must keep its huge breakthrough a secret, lest the Nazis figure it out and change their code. They enter into a painful calculus: Which information can be used, and hence which lives saved?

There are surely numerous narrative shortcuts taken here.

There's also one of those slogantype lines that seems far too tonguetrippingly clunky to be uttered by one character, let alone two: "Sometimes it's the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine."

By LAURA SCATURRO Of The Edge On Sept. 19, Ashlee Oceguera, 25, got into her two-door Toyota Solara and set off on a journey that took her 9,000 miles in 30 days. After traveling through 16 states, she returned one month later, finding her happiness again.

“I didn’t tell anybody this, but my plan was to go and never come back,” she said. “But I did come back and my life has more meaning now. I went through my quarter-life crisis.”

She said her parents thought she was crazy when she told them of her plans. They tried to talk her out of it.

“Nobody thought it was a good idea for me to travel alone, but I’ve always been very independent and seek adventures in traveling,” she said. “I’ve been to eight different countries and now 31 states. My goal is to visit all 50 states by the time I’m 50.”

When Oceguera sat down with the AAA planner to map out her journey, she knew one thing – she had to be in Texas the second week of October.

“My plan was not to really have a plan,” she said. “I would’ve loved if somebody could’ve gone with me, but not many people can take a month off of work."

"I wanted to see major national parks, historical landmarks and big cities. I had a game plan but not a schedule.”

Oceguera’s trip took her from Edwardsville to Wisconsin and Minnesota then across the northern route of the United States heading to Seattle, then south through Oregon and California, then through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, returning to Illinois through Arkansas.

She named her car Wanda, after the word wanderlust, which means a strong desire for, or impulse to, wander or travel and explore the world.

After the first week of her journey she found she was exhausted. She was tired of driving, hiking and riding bikes while sightseeing.

“I crammed in so much in such a short period of time,” she recalled.

“But I found a routine and got into a good sleeping habit. After I began getting good sleep, I had found my pace.”

Oceguera, who earned her degree in Construction Management from SIUE in 2012, accepted a position and ended up graduating early to take the out-of--state assignment.

She worked for two-and-a-half years but found her career unfulfilling.

“Although it was a great company, I was really unhappy so I quit my job,” she said. “I thought this is the best time to do something like this. I’m 25 and I have no responsibilities, no husband, no children, no debt. I have my cell phone bill – that’s it. I was at a point where I didn’t know where I wanted to live or what I wanted to do. I was miserable.”

She said the 9,000 mile drive saved her.

“I woke up happy every day,” she said. “I learned to appreciate so many things. Obviously there was a lot of time for me to think about everything. I found myself.

There was a couple times on the trip where I cried because I was so happy. I couldn’t believe I was getting to see this country and I got to do this. I was overwhelmed by how wonderful the people were that I met along my way. It was

People that I didn’t think I’d ever see again – people from college, people that I used to work with, I reunited with. One of the girls I went to high school with, and we didn’t know each other well, showed me around Eugene, Ore., and let me stay with her. It was amazing.”

Oceguera spent about one day in each place she stopped, but spent two days in Yellowstone. She said she did everything in fast forward.

Although she budgeted for motel accommodations, she ended up staying with old friends, friends of friends and also slept in her vehicle.

“I know I was a young woman traveling by myself, but sometimes I stayed in my car,” she said. “I cleared out my trunk and folded my back seat down. I know that sounds nuts, but I felt safe in my car, especially safe from the animals.”

on her way to Yosemite National Park when her car broke down.

“There was no oil in it,” she recalled. “I ran out of oil. I was out in the middle of nowhere. I couldn’t believe it. That had never happened before. I made it to the only gas station in Angels Camp. I was on my way to Yosemite. I called my dad and he told me to find a safe place to stay and get it to a mechanic in the morning. I got into my car and it wouldn’t start.”

She thought to herself, this is a bad day. She found a hotel.

“But the bad day turned into a good day,” she said. “The guy that worked at the front desk of the hotel also worked at a winery. He asked me what was wrong and then he then invited me to go to a winery where they were celebrating his boss’s wife’s birthday. I thought a glass of wine sounds great. I got cleaned up and it was just a really good time to be in California, in wine country, drinking wine outside on a patio looking at the beautiful stars.”

The next day, after a new battery and an oil change, she was back on the road.

The second time she stayed in a hotel she found herself in Houston, Texas.

“It was raining, so I checked into a hotel and I slept all day and did all my laundry.”

Oceguera said she didn’t mind the driving because it was recreational.

“I listened to a lot of books,” she said. “In most of the northern states, I had no (cellphone) service so I downloaded a bunch of books so that’s what I did. I went through five books. A lot of times I would drive without anything. My time in my car is my me time. I took a lot of the scenic routes. I rode along Highway One on the Pacific Coast.

When I woke up in the morning, I saw pelicans and seals playing in the water at the beach.”

She visited the Grand Canyon and hiked Hermit Trail, she spent one day in Albuquerque, N.M., and caught the spectacular annual International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta.

She took in a Texas A&M college football game in Kyle Stadium which drew an attendance of 110,633, the most people to ever attend a football game – college or pro – in the state of Texas.

In Arkansas, she knew her trip was coming to an end, so she Decided to mark the end of the adventure by skydiving with a friend.

After 9,000 miles and approximately 2,000 photos, Oceguera said the best part of the trip was visiting the national parks.

“The coolest part about visiting the national parks, were the animals I got to see,” she said.

“You’re driving along and you see bison walking alongside you on the road. There was a couple of horses and one that poked his head in my car. I woke up one morning to a herd of elk in a parking lot.

Getting to see all the animals up close was the greatest. There were a lot of national parks that I haven’t heard of that surprised me.

I was awed by something every day.

“When I returned I thought to myself, we can’t live our lives being afraid of everything. I was never really scared on my trip. It restored my faith in people. Traveling alone drove me to be more sociable. This country is so beautiful.

“It was an amazing trip, I’ll never forget it. Everyone was so generous. I tried to repay everyone that I could by taking them out to eat. I still have a lot of thank you notes to write.”

Ashlee Oceguera remained home for 12 days before she packed up her possessions for a move to Colorado, a state she somehow missed on her trip.

She says she will be looking for a management position and begin work on her masters degree in education.

he Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) presents the first comprehensive museum survey of Oklahomaborn, Los Angeles-based artist Joe Goode.

On view January 16 through April 11, 2015, the exhibition traces half a century of selected works by one of America’s most innovative yet under-recognized painters. Often identified with Southern California pop art, Goode ultimately transcends this classification, creating bodies of work with influences ranging from Midwestern iconography and environmental destruction to pop culture and the sublime.

Goode first gained international recognition following his inclusion in Walter Hopps’s seminal exhibition New Painting of Common Objects, organized at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1962.

That same year, a key example of Goode’s milk bottle painting series appeared on the cover of Artforum; another commences CAM’s exhibition. In Purple (1961), Goode positions a milk bottle in front of a domineering monochrome canvas, both of which have been applied with layers of purple oil paint.

The usually transparent—but now paint-encrusted—bottle foregrounds Goode’s concept of seeing through the picture plane, allowing the viewer to contemplate their own personal and cultural associations within, and through, Goode’s pictorial spaces.

In addition, the exhibition features representative works from several of the artist’s other series, including bodies of work created in large part through acts of destruction. In his Torn Cloud series (1967–76), Goode often uses razor blades to slash through

compositions of illusionistic skies, forming jagged clouds.

He then layers excised canvases on top of each other to allow viewers to peer through their torn surfaces. Goode’s performative surface violations increase in intensity with his introduction of firearms in the Environmental Impact series (1978–83). In these works, Goode literally draws with shotgun pellets, using a shotgun to blast through the monochromatic surface of the canvas. The bullets pierce and abrade the surface, forming seemingly chance compositions.

Tornado Triptych (1992), a monumental sumi ink painting, calls upon the lived Midwestern experience as source for the work’s iconography. Goode’s tornado paintings depict the progression of formidable natural forces, combining the visual liquidity of ink with nature’s raw energy in an uneasy relationship between beauty and violence. In his more recent body of work, titled Flat Screen Nature (2012–current), Goode uses an industrial hand saw to cut through sheets of painted fiberglass, creating allegorical landscapes of jagged edges and menacing peripheries; the artist’s visual vocabulary comes full circle to represent our environment’s vulnerable sky, land, and sea.

Joe Goode demonstrates how depictions of the sublime can speak to contentious American issues ranging from environmental vandalism to the Second Amendment. CAM’s presentation repositions Goode’s critical importance through an in-depth investigation of his concept of beauty through destruction as intrinsically tied to a Midwestern regional sensibility—milk bottles, big sky, tornadoes, and shot guns, for example—that has never before been explored in depth. In conjunction with the exhibition,

CAM will publish a catalog on the artist’s work with an exhibition history and bibliography, a foreword by CAM Executive Director Lisa Melandri, and critical essays by Chief Curator Jeffrey Uslip and art historian Thomas Crow.

Joe Goode (b. 1937, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) lives and works in Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles (2014); Texas Gallery, Houston (2002, 2004, 2010, 2012); Franklin Parrasch Gallery, New York (2009); and Manny Silverman Gallery, Los Angeles (2001, 2005). Goode’s work is included in numerous major museum collections, including

the Saint Louis Art Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the Smithsonian Institution; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Edison Theatre to host "emBodied Language" professor and coordinator of the Dance Program, challenges dancers to base their movements on written prompts, sparking unpredictable sequences and juxtapositions.

“For the Fame”: This large-scale work for 10 dancers, by David Marchant, professor of the practice in dance, offers “a theatrically satirical interrogation of the apparent American appetite for gun violence as entertainment.”

“Where the Buffalo Roam”: Cecil Slaughter, professor of practice in dance and director of The Slaughter Project, explores a handful of contemporary social issues, from patriotism and protest to immigration and the Obama presidency.

Performances of “emBodied Language” will begin at 8 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7.

ive young women take the stage. They are playful and supportive but also focused and competitive, challenging one another and themselves.

In “Fandango” (1963), choreographer Antony Tudor (190887) explores the nature of friendly rivalries with elegance, energy and insight. Beginning Friday, Dec. 5, “Fandango” will be one of seven professionally choreographed works featured in “emBodied Language,” the 2014 Washington University Dance Theatre (WUDT) concert.

The annual showcase, which takes place in Edison Theatre Dec. 5-7, includes dozens of dancers, selected by audition, performing new and original choreography by visiting and faculty artists.

“The overarching theme for this season is ‘American Dream/ American Nightmare,’ ” said director Christine KnoblauchO’Neal, PhD, professor of the practice in dance and director of the Ballet Program in the Performing Arts Department (PAD) in Arts & Sciences. “Each of these seven works connects with that in some way.

“Fandango is a delightful romp — prime Tudor,” Knoblauch-O’Neal said.

But with its Spanish setting and flair, the piece also suggests themes of cultural heritage and, by extension, immigration — as does “Thillana,” a work of classical Indian dance by adjunct instructor Asha Prem. Other works address themes of protest, community and gun violence.

“Fandango” was set for WUDT by guest artists Amanda McKerrow and John Gardner, working on behalf of The Antony Tudor Ballet Trust and the Dance Notation Bureau. Both are former soloists for American Ballet Theatre and appeared in several of Tudor’s works. McKerrow was the last ballerina to work with Tudor before his death. Also on the program will be the world premiere of “FURY,”

an original work by Kameron N. Saunders, a guest artist and St. Louis native who now lives in Kansas City.

“In a sense, ‘FURY’ is the flip-side to ‘Fandango,’ ” Knoblauch-O’Neal said.

Civil Life Brewery in St. Louis

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge According to brewersassociation. org craft beer sales were up 17.2 percent in 2013. They took up $14.3 billion of the $100 billion beer market in the U.S. Drinking craft beers has become the trendy thing to do and I am a part of that trend. Illinois and Missouri are a big part of it, too. Right now there are 83 craft breweries in Illinois and 49 in Missouri, ranking 11th and 18th in the nation respectively for most craft breweries within the state. California reigns supreme with a whopping 381 craft breweries. I guess gives new meaning to fun in the sun.

But while I definitely like the beer, it's what most of these breweries have to accompany their flavorful beers. To put it simply, if you're gonna drink, you gotta eat.

Recently I had a voucher for a free growler fill at Civil Life Brewery in St. Louis, so I grabbed my buddy Joe and thought I could knock out a food review while I was there.

Civil Life is located at 3714 Holt Ave. in St. Louis. The small brewery recently celebrated its third anniversary in September. If there is a knock it is that it is pretty small. Civil Life can't handle groups bigger than 15 and no buses for parties. It's also cash only.

It's a quaint location nestled inside a neighborhood, but it's worth a visit.

I visited on a Sunday and unfortunately they don't offer their full menu on Sundays.

Throughout the spring and summer the Sunday menu consists of barbecue, but after the daylight savings time change it turns to soup in the colder months.

It was a chilly day when Joe and I visited so soup sounded pretty tasty anyway. Joe Decided to go with their broccoli and cheddar selection while I

went with the sausage and vegetable choice. There was also a vegetarian chili available.

We couldn't complain about the price, it was only $6 for a Decent-sized bowl of soup and accompanied by hefty sized piece of French bread and garlic herb butter.

When my soup arrived mammoth hunks of sausage were visible floating in the tomato-based concoction. It also had giant white beans peeking out along with, green onions and chunks of celery.

As I dug in I realized the complexity of the dish. There were a lot of tastes popping off with each bite. It had a nice little kick to it, too. It had a similarity to a sausage gumbo in my opinion which was right up my alley.

I finally turned my attention to the airy French bread. I enjoy the rich taste of French bread and then I added their garlic butter to it and was really stoked. The garlic butter was very creamy and bursting with flavor. Actually, it was the big star of my meal.

Joe polished off his broccoli cheddar soup without much complaint either. We both discussed it and the soups were delicious, the problem was it just wasn't enough to fill us up.

Joe and I both have monster appetites and ample room to house them, so serving size left us a little disappointed, especially seeing that I wanted to try some of Civil Life's delicious beer selections.

I had to try out the rye pale ale, which won gold at the Great American Beer Festival earlier this

year. It was very good. I also tried a couple more, including the Eric's peat smoked ale, but as for my growler that I got filled, I went with my favorite on the day — the Dresselbier hoppy wheat.

Its ingredients include: white and red wheat malts, Pilsener malt, Vienna malt, oats, Saaz, Vanguard, Saphir hops and a pure German weizen yeast strain. It wasn't as hoppy as I was expecting, but still had a rich and flavorful taste. It was more sweet than the bitter I was expecting.

I'd like to go back and visit Civil Life again when the full menu is available. Tuesday through Saturday there is an intriguing sandwich menu available. The menu does change a little bit, but some of the choices it offers are: a muffuletta sub, a toasted Cuban sub, roast beef on a pretzel bun, a cajun turkey sub and a heirloom tomato, ham and provolone selection served on a brioche bun. Civil Life also has pretzel bites served with a slew of different sauces, hummus and a kielbasa along with a few other choices.

Again, Civil Life is small. The bar area houses a long wooden bench, which Joe and I had to share with fellow patrons. Walk through the door to go to an upstairs section and you will be face to face with the large brewing tanks where the magic happens.

Head upstairs and there is a little more seating and board and card games to play with friends.

Another thing that may catch your eye when you visit Civil Life are the solar panels on the roof. Doing its part to help the environment, Civil Life gets 35 to 40 percent of its power from those solar panels.

Thinking outside of the box is what makes Civil Life unique and makes it a place I'll visit again.

F ro m a d i v e r s e group of horseshoes available to the unique peanut butter brunch burger, this place will surprise you with its awesome menu. Stick around and have a few drinks and shoot some pool, too. They also offer live entertainment.

J. Gumbo’s 3949 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis Central West End This is a chain restaurant, but it doesn’t feel that way. Check out the St. Louis location at 3949 Lindell Blvd. to get some really good Cajun and Creole food quick and cheap. Make sure to check out the crawfish etoufeé. The menu does a really good job of informing you of spiciness levels.

Joanie’s Pizzeria 2101 Menard St., St. Louis Soulard A stable in the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis, this is a spot that offers great pizza and Italian dishes along with great drink specials and entertainment.

Visit prior to a Cardinals game or other various events in St. Louis, eat dinner, and ride the free shuttle to and from the event.

Los Tres Amigos 1011 Century Dr. Edwardsville T h e J o s e M o r a l e s Ta c o i s the highlight of this Mexican Restaurant. The deep fried goodness of the taco is topped off with Parmesan cheese to give it that special flavor. Check out the rest of the extensive menu for other great Mexican dishes, too.

Wang Gang Asian Eats 1035 Century Dr. Edwardsville This is a hip, fun spot if you’re into Asian cuisine. It’s an Asian fusion restaurant that puts unique spins on classic Asian dishes.

Check out the lettuce wraps, the

fried calamari and the stir fry selections and don’t miss out on the restaurant’s own line of sodas which are also great. It offers some healthy choices, too.

Brickhouse Tavern & Tap 2 McBride and Son Center Dr. Chesterfield This is a great place to take a date or have a good time with a group of friends. Fun and creative menu and huge line of beers on tap and in bottles. Enjoy your meal sitting on a couch in front of a fire.

The real all-star here are the bacon and jalapenó deviled eggs on the appetizer menu.

The LuBar & Bistro 911 Fairfax St. Carlyle Pretty cool place to chill out and have a good dinner. The dining area is separated from the bar, as this establishment is split into two levels. The LuBar nachos are arguably the best nachos I’ve ever had and the pulled pork sandwich is a winner. Check out the full breakfast menu also and don’t forget to order some ice cream from the ice cream bar before you leave.

Fazzi’s Bar and Restaurant 1813 Vandalia St. Collinsville Opa! You’ll probably hear this a few times here as patrons order the signature appetizer dish, Saganaki, consisting of breaded goat cheese which is doused in oil and set on fire.
