Christmas is for the Birds — and the Squirrels, Too THINK ABOUT LEAVING SOME ‘ORNAMENTS’ FOR CURIOUS ANIMALS

L

ooking for a fun Christmas activity? You can make it possible for the creatures that frequent your yard and trees to enjoy fine feasting this year by creating ornaments that are meant to be eaten away. BAGEL ORNAMENTS

Separate a bagel, and spread peanut butter on the flat side of it. Holding the bagel on the rounded side, press it into birdseed, which you will have already spread in a pie plate or shallow bowl. Run a length of ribbon or twine through the hole and tie it for easy hanging on trees.

SWEET TREATS

Cut slices out of apples and oranges. Loop yarn or ribbon (depending on the size of the holes in the centers of the slices) through the center of the apple and orange slices, tie a bow or knot at the top, and hang the delectable fruit treats on tree branches.

Budget-Friendly Décor

C

hristmas is one of the biggest holidays in the United States and can also be costly. Use these helpful hints to find the best ways to beautiful your home without breaking the bank.

Putting up Christmas decorations is also an essential part of the holiday celebrations. Although most families do want to have their homes lit and decorated for Christmas, many are forced to reduce their décor or even forego the entire decorating process due to lack of money. Sure, there will never be a shortage

of decorations you can buy from the stores, but these items can get quite expensive, especially if you have a big home to decorate.

stores. The best thing you can do is to have a list of the exact items you want to get. If this is not possible, you should at least have a picture in your mind of the rooms you want to decorate and how you want them to look There are still ways to bring the for the holidays. Department stores ahead before you even always seem like good places to go head to because they have practically everything you need. However, they are not the necessarily the best choice if your priority is to maximize your savings. A good first stop is the local dollar store or small, family owned merchant. Contrary to popular belief, not all the items sold in dollar stores are of inferior quality. In fact, you can find many hidden treasures in these stores that can cost you only a dollar or even less. As the Christmas season approaches, many dollar stores stock up on a variety of holiday supplies: ribbons, blinking lights, tree ornaments, and various craft supplies you or your children can use to create your own Christmas decorations.

PLAN AHEAD

SHOP FOR STORES

LOOK FOR DISCOUNTS

Another great store to check out for

cheap good-quality Christmas decorations is the discount store. The items you can find in discounts stores are very similar to those sold in malls or department stores but with lower price tags. Some of the items sold here may come from old stock, but they are still often very good in terms of quality. Discount stores may also carry second-hand items, so you should make sure to check each piece for broken parts before paying for them.

ONLINE

The Internet is another place where you can find nice Christmas decorations at a lower cost. As early as October, you can see a number of Christmas items showing up on online auctions so you should keep an eye out for these. You might even find a few vintage Christmas items at very low prices.

AFTER-CHRISTMAS SALES

If you want to have some serious long-term savings, think about waiting until after Christmas to buy decorations for next year. You'll need to have plenty of storage in a cool, dry place to keep them in good shape, but they can save you lots of money by buying from clearance racks after the holidays. It is possible to have a beautifully decorated home for Christmas even if you are on a tight budget, if you think outside the box. PHOTO: MLOPES / YAYMICRO.COM

Green Gift Wrapping TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

T

his Christmas is a great time to start practicing eco-friendly ways to wrap up gifts. Using materials you have around the house is a good place to start. The following are three green gift-wrapping ideas for you to use this holiday season. KRAFT PAPER

Instead of going for the luxury Christmas wrapping paper, buy inexpensive Kraft brown recycled paper. A roll of this will go a long way and is inexpensive compared to sparkly gift wrapping paper. You can find this at card and craft stores. Another great alternative is to use brown paper bags you have at home. Cut them down to the size you need using the blank side for the outside. Find ribbon, twine or yarn from home that you can tie up the gifts with. Tuck in a handmade gift tag and you're all set!

STAMPED PILLOWCASES

This is a creative gift wrapping idea which also makes a great gift. Use hemp or cotton pillowcases that you can find in eco-friendly shops. Use sliced-up fruits or vegetables as stamps. Dip them in vegetable food coloring or fabric paint. Hang the pillowcases to dry when finished. Place your Christmas gift inside and tie with pretty fabric scraps from home.

REPURPOSE OLD SUPPLIES

You might find a stack of past gift bags or tissue paper and cards from last Christmas in your closet. There is nothing wrong with re-using these items. It saves the world from more paper clutter and will put your imagination to use. Use the front of past Christmas cards to decorate non-holiday gift bags. Gather up tissue paper in all the colors you have and smooth them out by sitting them on the counter during a hot shower. Using your creativity will give you numerous gift wrapping ideas. Cooking Up Christmas IDEAS FOR BRINGING THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT INTO YOUR KITCHEN

A

s December arrives, most people begin putting up the Christmas tree, stockings, and all sorts of Christmas decorations in the living area of the house. The facade of the house also gets its share of lights and ornaments, but rarely do people think to decorate the less visible parts of the house such as the kitchen. Christmas is a time to celebrate, and we all know that no celebration is complete without food. And where does food come from? The kitchen, of course! It is only fitting to bring the Christmas spirit to this area of the house.

KITCHEN SUPPLIES

For instance, you can buy a new set of potholders, oven mitts, and kitchen towels with a Christmas pattern and hang these in strategic spots in the kitchen. Even if you do not normally use such things when you are cooking, they are great for adding a touch of the holidays in the kitchen.

DECORATE THE FRIDGE

Most kitchens have a number of magnets stuck to the Decorating a kitchen for refrigerator door, usually for Christmas may seem like a strange concept to some peo- holding up pictures drawn by the younger members of the ple, but if you go to the family. KITCHENWARE

Decorative kitchenware is another good way you can liven up the kitchen during the holidays. Take out those holly-trimmed bowls and those red and green plates and use them not only as ornamental elements but also for practical purposes. If you take the time to go to a few specialty stores in your neighborhood, you will find a few such items, as well as silverware with Christmas

designs. Department stores are also a good source of Christmas decorations for the kitchen. The only problem is that their prices tend to climb as the holidays approach. For this reason, try to shop for Christmas decorations as early as possible. If you can't find stores that sell holiday decorations during the off season, get on the Internet and do some online shopping.

MATCH TASTES

There are really no rules as to how to decorate a kitchen for Christmas. It all depends on your personal tastes and preferences. Just remember that you do not have to go out and spend a whole lot of money just for decorations. Even if you made your own décor or recycled old decorations, what matters is that you and your family feel good about your decorations.

Holiday Secrets to Avoid Weight Gain

I

t’s that time of year, when most people throw up their hands and give up on their diet. It’s guaranteed that you will gain weight during the holiday season, right? But what if that’s not a given? Here are some tips to help you keep your waistline trim this Christmas without losing your mind.

1. WATCH YOUR PORTIONS.

It’s easy to go overboard with the turkey and potatoes and pile food onto your plate. Most people overeat, though, so you really don’t need all that food. Instead of piling it on, try to take a palm sized amount of food from each dish. You should fit three or four servings on your plate. Eat that before piling more on and you might be surprised at how satisfied you are.

2. DRINK SOME TEA.

Skip the alcohol and suggest a round of tea after dinner. Serve it in another room if possible, away from the food. Or, clear the table as soon as everyone is finished so no one will be tempted to pick away at the leftovers.

3. ORGANIZE HEALTHY DISHES.

There are plenty of low-fat alternatives to most holiday foods now, so why not make sure some of them are on the table? Even if you aren’t the one organizing the meal, you can volunteer to bring some dishes, and the PHOTO: ARIWASABI / YAYMICRO.COM

host will probably be very happy to let you.

4. SKIP THE EXTRAS.

Gravy, salad dressing, extra butter and whipped cream are all heavy on the calories and tend to be the biggest reasons people gain weight over the holidays. Skip these and you’ll be lighter at the end of the year.

5. GO FOR A WALK.

It’s a lovely time of year out, and walking burns off calories as well as helps your digestion, so why not suggest a family stroll after dinner each evening? You’ll benefit and so will everyone else. There’s nothing like walking in a winter wonderland to make you feel alive.

6. EAT BEFORE YOU GO.

With all the parties going on this time of year, you need to make sure that you aren’t hungry when you arrive. All those cute little appetizers tend to pack a wallop when it comes to expanding your waist. It’s far easier to resist temptation if you eat a sensible dinner before you leave. You don’t have to accept weight gain over the holidays as being unavoidable. With a few simple changes to your lifestyle, it should be easy to maintain your figure until the new year.

Work something into your schedule. If you only have weekends free, try to go first thing in the morning. By afternoon, stores will be packed. Allow yourself a few hours to shop for gift recipients and never cram it into a lunch break. Don't procrastinate, and stick to the shopping dates on your calendar.

Suggest a price point for the gift exchange if there hasn't been one set already. Anything from $10 to $25 is usually popular.
