People For The Edge Nine outstanding preservation efforts from across the state will be honored next month

by Landmarks Illinois, a statewide group that advocates for the protection of historic properties.

This year ’s award winners range from a main street bank in Warren to the State Capitol.

Other winners include: two extraordinary individuals, a hotel, and a Chicago landmark.

“This year ’s winners of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award are truly inspiring and monumental in their own way. Each winner, demonstrating the catalytic impact of stewardship, activism, and continued investment, has proven that preservation is a key revitalization strategy.

More importantly, Award winners are saving places for people to create more vibrant and vital communities across Illinois,” said Bonnie McDonald, President of Landmarks Illinois.

The nine winners will receive a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award—which includes $500 and a distinctive trophy—at a special ceremony on November 1st at the InterContinental Hotel, Chicago. The award-winners are: I l l i n o i s S t a t e C a p i t o l ( We s t Wi n g ) , Springfield—Project of the Year The restoration of the West Wing of the Illinois State Capitol represents the second phase of a comprehensive renovation program for the state’s most significant governmental building. A National Historic Landmark designed by Alfred Piquenard between 1868 and 1888, the Capitol is one of the best examples of the Second Empire style in the Midwest.

The plan for the West Wing included the restoration of the key historic public spaces throughout its four floors and basement. Of particular note is the systematic restoration of the Grand Stair which extends from the first through the third floors, with original marble features cleaned and replicated with ten types of marbles from quarries the world over. Simultaneous with the restoration was the complete upgrade of the building’s systems including new energy efficient HVAC systems, life safety and accessibility upgrades and security improvements.

Planning for this transformational project began in 2009, with construction beginning in 2011. The $51 million project was completed in 2013 and received LEED Gold certification.

••• • Pere Marquette, Peoria—President’s Award for Rehabilitation Once host to presidents, celebrities, and professional athletes, Peoria’s 1927 Pere Marquette Hotel was both an anchor to the city’s downtown district and one of the most upscale hotel and event spaces in the state of Illinois. The hotel struggled financially throughout the past decade before a rehabilitation commenced in 2009. The rehabilitation included demolishing a nonhistoric adjacent building and constructing a 116-room addition on the site. The two buildings are connected by a non-invasive walkway, thereby creating a 402-room complex in which the new building and the historic Pere Marquette coexist comfortably and serve the needs of the community. The rehabilitation included the restoration of original spaces within the historic building including the ballrooms and presidential suite.

The Pere Marquette Hotel project was the pilot project for the creation of a State Historic Tax Credit. The city of Peoria estimates that this symbiosis of preservation and new construction could potentially bring over $2 billion in capital project investment to the downtown district.

• Apple River State Bank, Warren— Rehabilitation When the Neoclassical-style bank building was built in 1913, it was said to be the “finest building in the county devoted to banking purposes.” Although the Apple River State Bank has long anchored downtown Warren (population 1500), the building’s many challenges, including ADA non-compliant restrooms, an inefficient drive-through system, and basement conference rooms prompted the bank to seriously consider moving to a

new building on the edge of town in 2011.

Apple River’s board opposed this decision, and ultimately recognized that the bank was more than a place to cash checks; rather, it was a landmark around which generations had oriented their local identity and civic pride.

The bank developed a restoration plan that accommodated the site’s rich architectural details as well as the needs of a modern community bank. The conference room was relocated from the basement to the main floor, and restrooms were updated to comply with ADA. Teller lines were refabricated in mahogany to better reflect their historic materials and spatial arrangements. Most notably, a 1960s drop ceiling was removed to reveal a barrel vaulted art glass ceiling and historic millwork, all of which was restored in kind. The resulting restoration used the Federal Historic Tax Credit and has sparked new interest in preservation both in Warren and the surrounding area.

• Arcade Building, Riverside—Restoration Riverside’s Arcade building was a revolutionary structure at the time of its completion in 1871: designed under the supervision of William LeBaron Jenney, it was one of the country’s first “shopping arcades.”

It received local landmark status in 1993, but despite the property’s clear historic value, a succession of owners who were unable to maintain the Arcade Building’s historic fabric left the site in disrepair by 2009. The building, once so important to downtown Riverside’s commercial district, faced federal seizure and was listed on Landmarks Illinois’ 2009 Ten Most Endangered Historic Properties list.

Current owner and local contractor Giuseppe Zappani recognized the Arcade Building’s potential and purchased it in 2010. Zappani took advantage of the Cook County Class L tax incentive program to restore the Arcade’s historic integrity. A 1970s cement parge coat was removed to reveal the original Cream City brick underneath, and historic bricks were used to infill damaged areas. Perhaps the most significant restoration efforts took place at the roof level, where asphalt shingles were replaced with slate, all chimneys were rebuilt, and an ornamental cupola was completely refabricated in copper according to historic photographs. Zappani, who planned and undertook most of the restoration himself, has reinstated a commercial destination and renewed interest in preservation in Riverside.

• Charleston Historic Preservation Commission, Charleston—Advocacy When the United States Postal Service announced that it intended to close the Charleston Post Office as part of a larger program to shutter over 4,000 underserved branches, the local historic preservation commission worked quickly to save the 97-year old Colonial Revival building.

Each member of the Charleston Historic Preservation Commission (CHPC) took on an important role in the wider effort to save the post office: neutralized negative press, lobbied local politicians for public support, sought out prospective buyers for the property, and arranged a series of open houses. Perhaps most effectively, the CHPC

wrote and disseminated a document outlining historic preservation incentives for the greater Charleston community, a step the Postal Service neglected to take as part of its own marketing strategy.

Through these extensive and extraordinary endeavors, the CHPC was able to find a suitable buyer for the property. The oncethreatened, much beloved post office is now under the ownership of a local couple, who have sensitively rehabilitated the building into a pet supply store. The CHPC’s tireless efforts to save the Charleston Post Office went far beyond the typical role of the historic preservation commission, and their advocacy has stimulated preservation both at this site and in the city of Charleston.

• The Fortnightly of Chicago, Chicago— Stewardship The Fortnightly of Chicago purchased the Bryan Lathrop House in 1922, and since then has made it a priority to preserve and maintain the 1890’s McKim Mead and White-designed property as their operating clubhouse. In 1998, the club created the Historic Preservation Foundation of the Fortnightly (HPFF), a group that allowed for tax deductible charitable donations to assist with the preservation of the property, the first private club in Chicago to do so. By agreement, Landmarks Illinois is HPFF’s preservation partner and reviews all grants for compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. HPFF grants to the Fortnightly since 1998 total more than $3 million.

Preservation architects and engineers have been hired by the Fortnightly to compile two separate Historic Structures Reports, one in 1998 and one in 2009, in which preservation plans were outlined for the house. The scope of work undertaken at the Fortnightly has recently qualified for Cook County Class L status. This year, the HPFF commissioned a study expressly to understand how and when the club will be able to undertake important preservation projects. This measured approach to preservation has helped ensure that all renovations to the Bryan Lathrop House are successful.

• Indian Boundary Park Field House, Chicago—Restoration The Indian Boundary Park Field House, designed by Clarence Hatzfield and built in 1929, is one of the Chicago Park District’s many unique recreational buildings. The Field House exhibits a Tudor and Arts and Crafts exterior, with extensive Native American themed ornamentation throughout the interior to pay tribute to the park’s name and history. In May 2012, an electrical fire destroyed about 40% of the roof of the Field House and severely damaged the first and second stories including the auditorium.

The Park District made an early and resolute commitment to restore the building to its prefire condition. The fire left a ten-foot high pile of debris in the center of the auditorium, which was excavated for any salvageable architectural or ornamental features to aid in the restoration effort. The Field House, from its most essential features (a meticulously matched slate roof) to its most whimsical (a set of three tomtom inspired chandeliers), was restored with remarkable care, and the Chicago Park District once again demonstrated its dedicated stewardship of the city’s historic recreational spaces. The field house was re-opened and fully programmed by the spring of 2014.

• Walker and Carolyn Johnson—Lifetime Achievement Walker and Carolyn Johnson have been stalwart advocates of historic preservation and leaders in the field for decades. Walker, an award-winning architect, is one of the most enduring figures in Chicago’s preservation community. He has contributed to or led feasibility studies for some of the area’s most prominent sites, including the Marquette Building, Glessner House, the Chicago Cultural Center, Howard van Doren Shaw’s Ragdale, the Foellinger Auditorium at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the Wacker Drive reconstruction. In 1992, he founded Johnson-Lasky architects, a restoration architecture firm. Walker ’s commitment to preservation is extracurricular, as well; he served on the first board of directors of Landmarks Illinois (then the Landmarks Preservation Council) in 1971, and has

similarly dedicated himself to countless other preservation advocacy organizations over his 40-year career.

Carolyn Johnson joined the staff of the Landmarks Preservation Council in 1976, and during her 20 years with the organization, she worked as a speaker, educator, and advocate for preservation in statewide and national venues. She organized what is considered the country’s first Preservation Caucus, as well as the first Illinois Statewide Preservation Conference. Following her departure from Landmarks, Carolyn took on various executive roles in local preservation and arts advocacy organizations, including the Chicago Maritime Society and the Illinois State Historical Society.

The Johnsons are preservation pioneers, and their combined work has profoundly developed the field of historic preservation in Illinois and beyond.

• Wrigley Building, Chicago—Rehabilitation The Wrigley Building, one of Chicago’s architectural icons, faced a crossroads when it was sold by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company in 2011. Left largely vacant, the future of one of the city’s most prominent riverfront buildings was uncertain until it was purchased by a consortium of investors, including BDT Capital Partners and Zeller Realty Group, who pledged to retain the building’s name, restore its historic architectural features, and rehabilitate it for 21st-century use. The new owners worked with local aldermen and the City of Chicago to obtain city landmark status, which allowed the rehabilitation project to move forward using the Cook County Class L Property Tax Incentive.

Although the terra cotta façade was analyzed and restored where necessary, some of the most visible restoration work at the Wrigley Building happened at the street level. A reconstruction of the historic bronze storefront was installed along the plaza, as were more compatible granite pavers. Perhaps most dramatically, the owners removed a screen that had formerly extended from the connecting bridge, thereby allowing Michigan Avenue pedestrians to experience the newly-restored plaza between the Wrigley Building’s two towers. The work done at the Wrigley Building has energized commercial activity along Michigan Avenue and further legitimized landmark designation as a means of making economic development happen in Chicago.

Landmarks Illinois is dedicated to the preservation of buildings and landmarks throughout Illinois - not solely for the sheer aesthetics of a building and its architectural merits, but rather, for the influence that these structures have on their communities.

Landmarks Illinois is dedicated to highlighting how these places have worked their way into the fabric of their communities and how they have evolved to maintain their relevancy in their neighborhoods. And often, they have served as rallying points for entire communities. It is this concept of "People in Places" and the role of building preservation that we are celebrating.

About the Awards. Since 1994 Landmarks Illinois has been aided by a generous grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation to honor those whose work demonstrates a commitment to excellence in historic preservation. The award itself is a small-scale replica of the entrance arch and trading room from the Chicago Stock Exchange building, which was demolished in 1972. The fight to save this structure led to the founding of Landmarks Illinois in 1971. In addition, winners receive a $500 cash award.

People Fundraiser benefits kids with diabetes

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge The Lynne F. Solon Foundation is presenting “Uncorked! A Holiday Wine Experience” from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14. This fifth annual wine and beer tasting fundraiser raises funds which are used to send children to diabetes camps where they learn to live with diabetes.

“Uncorked! A Holiday Wine Experience,” a premiere buying event for the upcoming holiday season, will provide guests with the opportunity to taste a variety of wine, beer and spirits as well as place orders for the products – at special pricing – that can then be picked up at Bin 51 in Edwardsville.

Bart Solon pointed out that they started the Lynne F. Solon Foundation to honor the memory of his wife, Lynne, who died from complications of diabetes in 1993 at the age of just 42. “She’d been a diabetic for roughly 34 years when she passed away,” Solon noted.

He explained how the two had been high school sweethearts who met at the end of Lynne’s freshman year at Streator Township High School. “We were pretty much inseparable until I went up to college. We were apart for about a year. We got married right before my senior year of college. She had just turned 20. I was 21,” Solon recalled.

But having lived with diabetes s i n c e a y o u n g c h i l d , Ly n n e experienced various complications from the disease. “Her eyes were affected, her kidneys, and she had had a heart attack, but most people who knew her didn’t know she had any physical ailments,” Solon said.

“We had two children and both pregnancies were not without a lot of complications for her.”

Though diabetes wreaked havoc on Lynne’s body, Solon pointed out how Lynne’s focus was always on others, and she made an impact on everyone she met. “If she’d meet somebody, she’d focus on them. I think that was part of her magnetism. She’d make people feel good,” he said. “If she was talking to someone for an hour, she’d probably would spend 50 minutes asking them, “Tell me about you and your kids.” She always put the needs of others ahead of herself, and she was as a good mother.”

Ly n n e p a s s e d a w a y a f t e r complications developed following routine dental work. “This was a freak thing,” Solon emphasized.

“It was really, really sad because she was such a caring person, and so what we do here (with the Foundation) is in her memory.”

The Lynne F. Solon Foundation was started after monetary memorials were received after Lynne’s death. Solon explained that he had called the American Diabetes Association and learned about summer camps that the organization hosted each year for young diabetics. “I sent the money to them, and when I was relating that story to Lynne’s mother, she said, “Oh that’s so great because when Lynne was a little girl we couldn’t afford to send her to diabetic camp,'” Solon recalled.

“And I never knew that. That was kind of the start of things.”

The Lynne F. Solon Foundation’s main beneficiary of its fundraising and the contributions to the

foundation over the past 20 years have been used for the American Diabetes’ camping programs and other outreach programs for young people who are dealing with this disease. “Our mission is a little more broad based than that but from a financial standpoint, that has been the main focus,” Solon added. “Over the 20-year period, we’ve given over $250,000 to those programs – primarily to the camp.”

The foundation also provides scholarships for Edwardsville High School or Streator Township High School graduating seniors who either have a physical or learning disability. “We’re happy to be able to do that as well,” Solon said.

The foundation is run strictly through volunteers. “And all the administrative expenses of the foundation are covered by family and friends so if someone makes a contribution to the foundation, it's utilized 100 percent,” Solon emphasized.

The foundation does an annual fundraising mailing, but the wine and beer tasting event is its one major source of revenue. This year’s event, “Uncorked! A Holiday Wine Experience,” will take place from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the Leclaire Room of the N.O.

Brian Kuchta, owner of Bin 51, will be providing a multitude of product samples at the event, and several manufacturing representatives will be in attendance to answer any questions about the products.

There will also be opportunities, for an additional cost, to taste some special reserve wines.

The event will be catered by Bella Milano and a silent auction will take place during the evening.

Silent auction items include a week’s stay at a two bedroom house in Scottsdale, Ariz., that has a swimming pool; dinner for 10 hosted by Channel 4’s Sharon Reed; six tickets to the Illini versus Mizzou basketball game; tickets to Rams, Blues and Cardinals games; golf packages at several golf courses that include free greens fees and cart rental, and a special pickleball package that includes various paddles, balls, bags, t-shirts, a free lesson and dinner.

Butterfly House hosts fall events

More than 1,000 owl butterflies will take flight during the annual October Owls and Orchids event.

The Butterfly House’s 8,000-squarefoot tropical conservatory generally houses 150 owl butterflies which are easily recognized by their chocolate-hued wings and bring yellow markings that resemble an owl eye. Throughout October, there will be more than 10 times the standard number of these butterflies representing three species: Caligo eurilochus, Caligo atreus and Caligo memnon. October Owls and Orchids daytime events are included with regular admission.

Additional events will be held after-hours on Tuesday evenings in October from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Owl butterflies are most active during evening hours and can be seen in flight during these limited attendance events. On October 7, 14 and 28, owls from the World Bird Sanctuary will also be on display.

On October 21, nocturnal animals from the Saint Louis Zoo will greet visitors. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $3 for Missouri Botanical Garden members.

October 24: Booterflies. Join the Butterfly House from 5 to 7 p.m.

The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts’ 2014-2015 season presents local and returning favorites and some well-known performers and speakers making their Hett debut. Murray shines in latest film

By JOCELYN NOVECK Associated Press If we were going to be curmudgeonly about it — and "St. Vincent" is, after all, a movie about a curmudgeon — we'd focus on the one major flaw in the film, and not on its pleasures.

But since those pleasures are so, well, pleasurable, we'll do what Vincent — he's the curmudgeon, brought wonderfully to life by the singular Bill Murray — would never do.

We'll focus on the positive.

Which is considerable. Who wouldn't want to spend 102 minutes in the company of Murray at his grumpy best — his eyes in a perpetual roll, annoyed by anyone and everything, but somehow earning affection

from those who annoy him? Not that anyone can figure out why. As Daka the pregnant stripper/prostitute, played Naomi Watts with a go-for-broke Russian accent, asks Vincent's young friend Oliver: "WHY you like him?"

First-time director-screenwriter Theodore Melfi, who snagged Murray by first calling the actor's 1-800 number and leaving a voice mail, doesn't give us a lot of backstory about Vincent.

But by the end of the opening credits, we know pretty much what we need to. Vincent's a mess.

Retired and residing alone in a ramshackle house in Brooklyn, he indulges in booze and gambling — and pregnant stripper/prostitute Daka. At the bank, he learns his reverse mortgage has run out. He tries to empty his account, but discovers he's overdrawn by $114.

Luckily, a minor source of income is about to present itself. Maggie, a newly single mom (Melissa McCarthy, who charms in a refreshingly sweet and restrained performance) and her son, Oliver, are moving in next door. They meet Vincent, bloodied from a clumsy kitchen fall, when their moving men break his tree branch. "Is that our neighbor?" asks Oliver (the appealing Jaeden Lieberher, precocious but never precious). "It's gonna be a long life."

The initial disgust is mutual, but Vincent needs money, and soon, wouldn't you know it, he's babysitting Oliver every afternoon. This rather strains credulity. Quality babysitters aren't exactly hard to find in Brooklyn, but whatever ... another babysitter would hardly

be as entertaining as Murray. Er, Vincent.

Soon, Oliver's learning the ways of the world, Vincent-style. He sits at the neighborhood bar, drinking Coke, as Vincent imbibes. He accompanies Vincent to the racetrack, helping the latter win a trifecta.

He even meets Daka the pregnant stripper/ prostitute.

Despite these dubious influences, Oliver's confidence grows under Vincent's tutelage.

He's a shrimp, so at first, he's bullied at school.

"I'm small, if you haven't noticed," the boy says. "Yeah, so was Hitler," Vincent replies.

"That's a horrible comparison," the boy rightly responds. But Vincent teaches him to punch, and he breaks the bully's nose at school.

Bullying over.

"Hector" is a fine fall film

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge Rosamund Pike is very much in demand right now. For the second week in a row, her new film Gone Girl has dominated the box office and made her a reasonable candidate for an Oscar nomination later this year. Always eschewing what is popular with what is right (for me), I took the opportunity to see her other new film, "Hector and the Search for Happiness." Clearly, she's a talented supporting performer - and superhumanly attractive - but the movie is more a fantastic starring vehicle for Simon Pegg, the British actor who has for years entertained us with comedy ventures like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Here he re-teams with Pike (they starred

together last year in the ultimate pub crawl film The World's End) to teach all of us that what it truly means to be happy is impossible to define. But it's also remarkable to discover.

The titular Hector (Pegg) is a mildmannered London psychiatrist who comes to the realization that treating his regular patients banal complaints, often by answering their questions with those of his own, is seriously taking its toll on his emotions. Hector is polite, professional, and stuck in the routines that his doting girlfriend, Clara (Pike), lives to manage. He's clearly been in the rhythm of living the specifics of his certain type of life for so long that the routine has become a rut. The word 'milquetoast' was created for people like Hector, but the screenplay spends a great amount of time blaming Clara's

burgeoning career (naming those TV pharmaceuticals) and lack of ambition towards motherhood for their disconnection. And it's a shame because they are an adorable couple.

So, in the spirit of educational research, Hector sets off on a journey to discover what it means to truly be happy. He starts, of all places, in China where he befriends an infinitely wealthy banker (Stellan Skarsgard) and a lovely prostitute (Ming Zhao) before turning Shanghai on its end. Outside of the city he visits a monastery where an aging monk (Togo Igawa) gives him hope for his search, but none of the real answers that he's looking for. Skype, even in the Yandang mountains, gives him the ability to communicate with Clara, but their short and infrequent contact shows us how the infrastructure of

their relationship is quickly crumbling without the facade of constant togetherness.

After China, Hector tries his luck in Africa where a college friend (Barry Atsma) runs a health clinic in the middle of nowhere for people who are as likely to suffer gunshot wounds as they are to be gored by a rhino. Camaraderie, sweet potato stew, the still on-going global culture shock toward homosexuality, and one freaky kidnapping involving a drug kingpin (Jean Reno) further perplex the normally unflappable Hector and drive him to the last stop on his global happiness tour: Los Angeles.

Surely, the vapid and rich Americans know a thing or two about the topic.

We certainly know enough about Hector's other specialty, medicating with mood-altering prescriptions.

Hector has a moment with a terminal brain cancer patient on the flight that leads him to his former flame (Toni Collette), a now very happily married mother of three with connections to a world-renowned psychologist (Christopher Plummer) leading a Nobel charge toward understanding the physical interpretation of emotion.

Hector's 'what-if' brush with the past doesn't go nearly as planned, but gives him firm footing for a fitting, if not terribly unpredictable, resolution with Clara. It's a nice movie, filled with introspective charm and clever exposition...but so too would be anyone's Search for Happiness.

"Hector and the Search for Happiness" runs 125 minutes and is rated R for language and some brief nudity. I give this film three stars out of four.

"The Equalizer"

If you were lucky enough to catch Denzel Washington in "A Raisin in the Sun" on Broadway, you saw the hugely charismatic actor portray, in an iconic role, the full complexity of a human being: strengths and weaknesses, attributes and flaws, durability and vulnerability. All topped off, of course, with that boyish Washington charm.

Alas, Washington doesn't always choose big-screen roles similarly worthy of his unique talent. This is especially true of "The Equalizer," a mediocre thriller that tries to establish the 59-year-old actor as a middle-aged action hero, a la Liam Neeson. Here, we get to see Washington kill a lot of people.

Yawn. OK, he does it in somewhat inventive ways. Still: Yawn.

"The Equalizer" isn't a terrible movie, as action sagas go. It just doesn't nearly live up to what it aspires to be, which is a smart, classy update of the 1980s TV series of the same name, about an ex-government agent who spends his retirement as a sort of ultra-violent avenging angel, rubbing out villains who treat good people badly.

Changes have been made — liberally. On TV, Robert McCall (Edward Woodward) was a debonair middle-aged guy in a trench coat, collar upturned, cruising the streets of New York in a black Jaguar. Here, no trench coat, no Jaguar, no New York. Director Antoine Fuqua and writer Richard Wenk have moved the action to Boston, and Washington's McCall is a blue-collar type. A widower with few possessions, he spends his days working at the Home Mart, and his nights reading literary classics and drinking tea at the diner.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for strong bloody violence and language throughout, including some sexual references."

RUNNING TIME: 131 minutes.

"The Good Lie"

The movie poster for "The Good Lie" features a smiling Reese Witherspoon, front and center. But, truth be told, neither Witherspoon nor her character is the film's star — not in the essential sense. The real stars are the Sudanese children at the bottom of the poster, their backs to us, trudging across an empty, sun-scorched expanse.

"The Good Lie" tells a fascinating story, that of the so-called "Lost Boys" (and girls) of Sudan, youngsters orphaned by the bitter war that engulfed their country beginning in 1983, forcing many to trek for hundreds and hundreds of miles — over several years in some cases — to safety. And, admirably, the filmmakers keep these youngsters — and the young adults they became — central in their storytelling. They may have a Hollywood star on their hands, but this isn't a Hollywood star vehicle.

It's probably safe to say that many Americans know little or nothing about the humanitarian effort, begun in 2000, to resettle thousands of young refugees from Sudan in U.S. cities. For that reason alone, this movie, directed by Philippe Falardeau, is worth seeing. Luckily, it's also a compelling film — occasionally a bit too earnest, perhaps, or overly broad in its humor, but often deeply moving.

The story is fictional, but based on extensive research by screenwriter Margaret Nagle, who interviewed hundreds of "Lost Boys." The film begins in a southern Sudan village, where two brothers, Theo and Mamere, and their sister, Abital, suddenly find themselves orphans when attackers come rampaging through, killing anyone in sight.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, some violence, brief strong language and drug use."

RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes.

"Men, Women & Children"

If ever there was a movie that needed a window to be opened, a blast of fresh air to be let in, it's Jason Reitman's "Men, Women & Children."

The film, adapted from Chad Kultgen's novel, is about dreary faces in front of digital screens. A grim overview of the way the Internet, smartphones, sexting and all manner of cyber evils are corrupting our waking hours, "Men, Women & Children" makes "Frontline" look like a laugh riot by comparison.

Reitman's suburban tale artfully weaves a handful of overlapping stories of lonely teenagers and their lonely parents in small town Texas, all of whom are unable to summon a smile in the two hours of this dour, downbeat melodrama.

Among them: a p aranoid mom (Jennifer G arner ) obsessively monitoring her daughter's (Kaitlyn Dever) p h o n e a n d P C ; a s e x l e s s c o u p l e ( A d a m S a n d l e r, Rosemarie DeWitt) exploring extramarital partners online; an anorexic high-school girl (Elena Kampouris) encouraged not to eat by chat-room supporters; a singlefather (Dean Norris) watching over his video-game devoted son (Ansel Elgort); a perpetually videotaping mother (the always excellent Judy Greer) trying to help her attractive daughter (Olivia Crocicchia) become a movie star.

"The Judge"

Just put Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall in a room together and you'll have a movie, a truism that "The Judge" does its damnedest to disprove.

David Dobkin's film doesn't leave a melodramatic stone unturned, adding to its courtroom drama a sentimental tsunami of story lines: a mother's funeral, a father-son reckoning, a fight with cancer, a dash of alcoholism, a custody battle, a mentally challenged younger brother, and a hint of possible incest, to boot. Objection! Badgering the moviegoer.

But for a moment, the big-budget sheen of "The Judge" and its contrived, kitchen-sink emotionality is forgotten.

Downey's big-city, high-priced lawyer, Hank Palmer, helps his ailing father, Duvall's Judge Joseph Palmer, in an excrement-soiled bathroom, pulling him into the shower while they both struggle for an excuse to keep Hank's young daughter outside.

Even with the scene's gratuitous realism, it's the one natural moment in the otherwise schematic "The Judge."

As it is, the considerable appeal of seeing two fine actors as perfectly opposite each other like Duvall and Downey — one a rigid old cowboy, the other a manic pinball — is limited by the film's ceaseless heart string-pulling. This is a movie that uses Bon Iver's mawkish "Holocene" — the cheapest of ploys — not once, but twice.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language including some sexual references."

RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes.

"Fury"

The relentless barrage of heavy-handedness in David Ayer's World War II tank drama "Fury" begins immediately.

A lone horseman approaches on the grim horizon of a foggy, corpse-strewn battlefield. Out of the muck leaps a man who pulls the rider down and savagely bludgeons him in the eye.

Ayer, a veteran of the Navy and L.A. crime films like "Training Day" and "End of Watch," wants to make it clear from the start that he's making a film about the barbaric brutality of war. Setting it in April 1945 in the waning days of WWII in Europe only furthers the point that all war — even the supposedly "good" ones — is hell.

Into Germany rumbles Sgt. Don Collier (Brad Pitt) and his M4 Sherman tank. With "Fury" blazed on its gun and a claustrophobic warren of bickering soldiers within, the tank is a killing machine, as are its hardened inhabitants. The cast — Shia LaBeouf as the gunner, Jon Bernthal as the loader, Michael Pena as the driver — work to show the darkness that has settled behind their eyes after years of war.

Good and bad — the usual battle lines of most WWII tales — isn't the dichotomy of "Fury." A far cry from his debonair "Inglourious Basterds" Nazi-hunter, Pitt's commander is a tough, even cruel boss (and the eye-stabber of the opening).

"We're not here for right and wrong," says Pitt. "We're here to kill."

Such bleak, unnatural mantras are occasionally spouted

by Collier and his crew. The tank, a kind of a roaming lone wolf after its platoon is decimated, is joined by a new recruit, a fresh-faced, ill-prepared typist named Norman (Logan Lerman).

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sequences of war violence, some grisly images and language."

RUNNING TIME: 134 minutes.

For The Edge The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis opens the 2014-2015 Studio Theatre series with "A Kid Like Jake" by Daniel Pearle and directed by Seth Gordon. This moving p ro d u c t i o n w i l l b e p e r f o r m e d i n t h e Emerson Studio Theatre of the LorettoHilton center for the Performing Arts, 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves, October 29-November 16, 2014.

Alexandra and Greg are stressed. Test scores, campus visits and entrance interviews for their son Jake are almost too much for the young family to handle.

Especially since this prep isn’t for college applications, it’s all part of the nervewracking process of winning a place in one of Manhattan’s exclusive kindergarten programs. Four-year-old Jake’s intelligence and imagination have him in the running for a top school, but when the focus turns to his imagination and affection for dressup, acceptance takes on a whole new meaning.

The cast of "A Kid Like Jake" at The Rep is Alex Hanna (Other Desert Cities) as Greg, Susan Pellegrino (Offshore Signals) as Judy, Jacqueline Thompson as the nurse and Leigh Williams as Alexandra.

The Rep’s production of "A Kid Like Jake" is directed by Rep Associate Artistic Director Seth Gordon.

“It’s a privilege to introduce this play to our community now, just as trans-gender issues are becoming such a strong part of the national conversation,” said Gordon.

“A whole new generation of parents is emerging with new tools for helping their children realize their greatest potential.

This play presents parents who are doing their best to confront this issue in a way

that will make the story new and familiar at the same time, to anyone who is a parent, or anyone who was raised by one.”

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A complaint against 36 United Methodist ministers who blessed a same-sex wedding in Philadelphia in defiance of church law has been resolved.

The clergy will face no discipline, but released a statement acknowledging they could be punished if they do it again.

The pastors blessed the Nov. 9 ceremony at Philadelphia's Arch Street United Methodist Church to show support for the Rev. Frank Schaefer, a colleague who faced church discipline for presiding at his gay son's wedding. That case is before the Methodist church's highest court.

The rebellious clergy and the Methodists who filed a complaint against them have agreed to meet to discuss their differences over gay marriage.

The denomination accepts gay members but bans "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" from becoming clergy and forbid ministers from performing same-sex marriages. The issue has

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Baptists have mixed reactions to the Supreme Court's refusal to stop the legalization of gay marriage.

The Rev. Russell Moore, who heads the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, says courts can't change what the Bible teaches.

He says Christians who oppose gay marriage, instead of retreating in anger, should love their gay and lesbian neighbors and demonstrate the unique value of traditional marriage in their homes and churches.

But the Rev. Nancy Petty, whose Baptist church belongs to a more liberal denomination, says she and her same-sex partner now look forward to getting married in North Carolina. Petty had refused to sign any marriage licenses until gay and lesbian

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis, cardinals and bishops from around the world have received an unexpected lecture on the joy of sex from a Catholic couple brought in to talk about what makes a marriage last.

Ron and Mavis Pirola, parents of four from Sydney, Australia, told a Vatican gathering of some 200 prelates that sexual attraction brought them together and that sex has helped keep them married for 55 years.

The Pirolas were applauded when they told the bishops about the son of a Catholic couple who was welcomed into a family Christmas gathering with his gay partner.

In an indication, though, that opposition to such a welcoming position remains high, conservative Catholic groups blasted the Pirola's example as "damaging" to the church.

Missouri History Museum to celebrate the Louisiana Purchase For The Edge

I

n 1803, the United states agreed to pay France $15 million for the Louisiana Territory â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 820,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. The United States doubled its size, expanding the nation westward. Beyond the geographic expansion, the Louisiana Purchase remade St. Louis into an American city â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and reshaped and redefined what it meant to be an American.

The Louisiana Purchase: Makint St. Louis, Remaking America features loans from the National Archives and documents and artifacts from the Missouri History Museum's own collections. This 6,000-square-food exhibition explores the complex negotiations related to the Louisian Purchase and its after effect on St. Louis.

The story behind The Purchase is one international intrigue, political scheming, threats of war and threats of secession.

A highlight of the exhibition is the Treaty of Cession, on loan from the National Archives, better known as the The Louisiana Purchase Treaty. The Treaty of Cession is widely regarded as one of the most influential documents in American history. In addition, the National Archives has loaned nine other documents to the Missouri History Museum. This will be the first time all of these documents from the National Archives will be exhiibited together.

The Louisiana Purchase: Making St. Louis, Remaking America will be on exhibit from Oct. 25 through April 15 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.

Admission the exhibit is free.

The Louisiana Purchase: Making St. Louis, Remaking America is presented by Edward Jones, Emerson and the William T. Kemper Foundation-Commerce Bank, trutee with additional support by Wells Fargo Advisors.

The Missouri History Museum has been active in the St. Louis community since 1866. Founding members established the organization "for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state." Today, the Missouri History Museum seeks to deepen the udnerstanding of past choices, present circumstances and future possibilities; strengthen the bonds of the community and facilitate solutions to common problems. The Missouri History Museum offers programs and outreach services, including traving exhibtions; tours, theatrical and musical presentations; programs for school classes and youth groups;; family festivals; special events; workships and lectures. THe Missouri History Museum is funded by the St. Louis city and county taxpayers through the Metropolitan Zoological Park and Museum District and private donations.

Travel For The Edge The Missouri Botanical Garden is excited to announce its plans for an expanded “Garden Glow 2014,” the Garden’s second annual winter light exhibit. Visitors will have the opportunity to stroMBG Garden Glowll through the Garden at night surrounded by a spectacle of unique light installations. The exhibit will open Saturday, Nov. 22, 2014 and run through Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

The show features over a half million lights illuminating the Garden as well as loads of engaging activities for visitors of all ages. The light display will adorn the Garden’s most iconic locations including the Climatron, Kaeser Memorial Maze, the Central Axis, Tower Grove House, Shoenberg Fountain and the Cleveland Gate House.

More than over 600,000 lights 200,000 more lights than last year have been added, and walkways will once again be transformed into multi-colored light tunnels creating an explosion of visual magic. Photo opportunities will be plentiful throughout the display from the popular “Glowmen Glen,” to the “Kiss Goodnight” and a new “Snow Globe.” Even more traditional displays have been added such as candlelight village displays and carolers – sure to delight crowds of all ages.

The exhibit will also include an interactive area where visitors can decorate life-size snowmen, creating a fun photo opportunity.

Food and drinks will be available at a number of locations on the grounds including stations located on the Central Axis featuring fire pits for s’more-making.

“Our members, visitors, staff and volunteers were overwhelmed with the fantastic display during our inaugural year,” said Missouri Botanical Garden President Peter Wyse Jackson. “Garden Glow is a destination for St. Louisans and

visitors and this year promises an even bigger and better experience.”

Special Glow gear will be sold giving show attendees an opportunity to become a part of the fun.

Tickets are now on sale for Garden Glow 2014. Tickets make a unique and treasured holiday gift. Tickets

are date-specific and sold in limited quantities. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.mobot.org/ glow. In an effort to reduce waste, wristbands will not be utilized this year. Timed ticketing will keep lines shorter and more efficient. Visitors are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online for

speedier admission to the exhibit.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is currently seeking volunteers to help enhance the visitor experience during the Garden Glow event.

Volunteers will be needed to welcome and assist guests as they view the outdoor exhibit. For additional information, contact
