October at the Butterfly House For The Edge October is a special time at the Butterfly House.

Here's a look at upcoming events: Through October 31: BOOterfly House. The Butterfly House has be en t ra n sf o r m e d t o t h e BOOterfly House for October with daily activities and featured events. Visitors can meet frightful new friends in the Scorpion’s Lair, see Botanicals Gone Mad in the Conservatory and spy on spectacular spiders with Little Miss Muffet during daily story time at

10 a.m. Carnivorous plant feedings happen daily through October 31 at 1 p.m. All activities are included with regular admission.

October 27 and 28: Bug Ball. The fun continues on Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Visitors can play games, create spook-tacular crafts and take home lots of loot after they visit hand-painted Treat Houses. Families can dance to Monster Jams or spy on the amazing Owl Butterfly, which are only active during dusk and dawn.

The event price ($14 per person, $12 for Missouri Botanical Garden

members) includes admission into the Butterfly House, activities, light refreshments, crafts, treats and goody bags. Space is limited and reservations are required.

October 18 and 25: Wicked Wings and Wine Adults can join in on the happy hour fun at the Butterfly House’s event for those guests 21 and up. As twilight approaches, sample local brews and wines while you learn about our Owl butterflies, which are most active at dusk. Plus, encounter other spooktacular live animals featured during the event. Take a stroll through the

torch lit garden and enjoy festive music. Dare to try our chocolate ants or barbecued meal worms!

Don't worry...other light appetizers will also be provided. Tickets are available on the website and are $35 for the general public, $25 for Garden members and $15 for designated drivers.

The Butterfly House is located in Faust Park at 15193 Olive Blvd. in Chesterfield, Mo., accessible from Interstate 64 at exit #19B. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays (closed Mondays). The last ticket is sold 30 min. prior to closing

What: Boo at the Zoo Nights presented by SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital When: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Nightly, Tuesday, Oct. 17 through Monday, Oct. 30, 2017 NOTE: The Zoo closes for all visitors at 4 p.m. on the days of Boo at the Zoo Nights.

Doors re-open at 5:30 p.m. for the ticketed event. Tickets for Boo at the Zoo Nights can be purchased during the day until 4 p.m., or at the door on nights of the event.

Decorations & Animal Exhibits Grab a witch’s broom and float around the Zoo’s decorated grounds where you’ll encounter singing pumpkins, a straw maze, Witchy Walk, Pirates’ Lagoon, Fragile Forest Fairyland and much more!

There are three animal exhibits open during the event. Creep into the Charles H. Hoessle Herpetarium to catch sight of heroes in a half shell, observe frogs and toads maintaining their stealth camouflage, and practice your Parseltongue. For a little more hocus pocus, check out the Emerson Children’s Zoo and meet some awesome animals up close. Don't be alarmed if you discover the naked mole rats have left their costumes at home! Catch a glimpse of sea lions and harbor seals taking a nighttime swim as you walk through the Sea Lion Sound tunnel.

Activities & Attractions Gather 'round and perk up your ears to hear interactive theatrical storytellers spin wild tales about animals. Stop by educational stations and learn about some of the world’s creepier-looking animals, like vultures and hellbenders.

Eerily draped in cobwebs, the Mary Ann Lee Conservation Carousel transforms into the not-too-spooky “Scare-ou-sel.” Tickets are $3 per person; Zoo members may use their Anywhere Plus Passes. Visit the 4D Theater for a showing of “Happy Family 4D,” a tale of a family that unassumingly goes to a theme park but ends up getting transformed into mystical monsters! Tickets are $5 per person.

Food & Souvenirs See what’s brewing at Zoo cafés. Be sure to shop the Halloween boo-tique for souvenirs, and receive 10 percent (20 percent for members) off any purchase at Zoo gift shops. At Tropical Traders Gift Shop, kids can purchase a pumpkin to decorate and take home.

Hett Center announces free film series

This fall, McKendree University’s Hettenhausen Center for the Arts’ free Film Art Series presents four powerful, critically acclaimed films.

People People planner Illinois bicentennial children's art contest planned

Illinois children can help kick off the state’s bicentennial celebration by using their imaginations and artistic skills in a contest sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The theme of this year ’s art contest is “Happy Birthday, Illinois.”

Kids from kindergarten through high school get to design posters celebrating the state’s 200th birthday by drawing anything they want – for instance, famous Illinoisans at a party or landmarks decorated as birthday cakes.

The winning artwork will be displayed at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum throughout the bicentennial year of 2018.

Artwork may be submitted from Sept. 1 until Dec. 15. Winning entries will go on display in February 2018, around the time of Lincoln’s birthday.

Submissions must be on poster board 14 inches high by 11 inches wide in portrait orientation (that is, taller than it is wide). They cannot feature copyrighted characters such as Batman. More details are available at bit.ly/ALPLMartcontest.

Learning history is about more than memorizing dates and taking tests. Producing art is a great way

for students to connect with historic events and consider their meaning.

The contest is open for students from kindergarten through the end of high school. Entries do not have to be submitted via schools; youth groups, home-educated children or anyone else in the proper age ranges can participate. Winners and honorable mentions will be selected in three categories: Grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

Illinois became the nation’s 21st state on Dec. 3, 1818. A yearlong celebration of the state and its accomplishments will begin on Dec. 3 of this year, leading up to the 200th birthday next December. More information about the bicentennial can be found at www.Illinois200.com.

Founding members established the organization “for the purpose of saving from oblivion the early history of the city and state.” Today, the Missouri Historical Society serves as the confluence of historical perspectives and contemporary issues. Next on the tour will be Mrs. Henry (Janet) Watson, the women who donated the land for Riverview Park. WWI soldier, William Luecth and the Cisco brothers (Tuskegee Airmen) will share their stories. Andrew Carnegie will be the Historian this year and will enlighten attendess about the history of the Carnegie Library System. Young drowning victim, Nick Taneakas will tell of his demise and the last stop on the tour will be a visit from Richard Galbaly, the glassblower who represented Illinois Glass in Paris.

Women give, men take and the Old Testament crashes into modern anxiety in director Darren Aronofsky's "mother! " It is an audacious, bold and fascinating fever dream of a film.

It's allegory for, well, everything (the environment, marriage, art, spirituality, you name it!), that will challenge, distress and edify anyone who chooses to submit themselves to this creation for two hours.

Like many Aronofsky endeavors, "mother!" is a film doesn't fit neatly into one genre. It starts out as one thing, a sort of psychological thriller and chamber drama about a couple living in a stately and remote home, and devolves gradually and then very suddenly into jaw-dropping chaos that almost seems to be testing the viewer. How much of Jennifer Lawrence's suffering can you take before covering your eyes?

Or storming out of the theater? "Mother!" will get under your skin, that's a guarantee.

This film begs for a viewing unencumbered by lengthy summarization. It's not that it defies explanation, what happens is fairly straightforward as far as nightmare logic is concerned. But the less you know the better.

The setting is a grand Victorian home, plopped down in the middle of a field surrounded by trees. There lives a married couple (Lawrence and Javier Bardem), and it is peaceful and bright. It is an Eden dressed in Restoration Hardware linens that Lawrence's character (who is credited as "Mother" but never called that) has rebuilt for her husband (credited as Him) from wall to wall after a devastating fire burned it to the ground. She is earthy and quiet and perches her head to the wall to listen to the beating heart of the home in order to find the right shade of yellow for the space.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong disturbing violent content, some sexuality, nudity and language."

"American Assasin"

Mitch Rapp is an action hero in the vein of Jack Ryan or John McClane: an impossibly tough and determined everyday guy out to save the world.

Dylan O'Brien brings a youthful freshness to that archetype in "American Assassin ," his first leading-man role and the first big-screen adaptation of Vince Flynn's series of Rapp novels. The character is scrappy and outspoken, rebellious and single-minded, and a skilled wielder of all manner of weapons.

But Rapp is first seen onscreen as a starry-eyed lover in Ibiza about to propose to his girlfriend. Their idyllic moment is ruined when terrorists storm the beach and Rapp's fiancée ends up among the dead.

Flash forward 18 months and Rapp is a bearded recluse in Rhode Island, where he's been studying Arabic, mastering firearms and practicing martial arts. He plans to take out the terror kingpin responsible for the Ibiza attack. But his clandestine training catches the eye of a CIA recruiter (Sanaa Lathan), who brings Rapp in as a counterterrorism operative.

From there, the story jumps around multiple international destinations as Rapp undergoes advanced training with the humorless Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton) and onto a mission to recover a heap of stolen plutonium.

Iranian forces intend to make a nuclear weapon to attack Israel. But an American mercenary and former student of Hurley's known as Ghost (Taylor Kitsch) is also involved, and he has his own ideas about how the plutonium should be used.

RATED: R for "strong violence throughout, some torture, language and brief nudity."

"Kingsman: The Golden Circle"

In the first film about a secret spy group known as Kingsman, we learned they are well-dressed, courtly and perfectly groomed. But by the second film, there's a decidedly ungentlemanly whiff about them — of desperation.

"Kingsman: The Golden Circle" comes three years after the first leg in the Matthew Vaughn-directed franchise — and it bodes poorly for the expected third. This sequel is an overlong, labored affair that lacks the fizz of its predecessor.

Even an insane cameo by Elton John — in his full feather and rhinestone glory — can't save it.

For anyone needing a refresher, the Kingsman movies are based on a series of comic books by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons that centers on British upper crust spies who combine a fondness for bespoke tailoring with the lethality of James Bond. They hang out in a Saville Row tailor shop, sip tea, are fitted for 007-like gadgets and save the world in secret.

The first film introduced the working class Eggsy (Taron Egerton) as a potential recruit who is championed

by Kingsman leader Colin Firth, despite the younger man's crudeness and ill-breeding. He proved his mettle by foiling a diabolical plan hatched by a billionaire internet entrepreneur played by Samuel L. Jackson, whose weird lisp outlasted its welcome.

The charm of the first film was the way it straddled the line between celebrating spy movies and mocking them. It had a winking, self-aware humor. Plus, the action sequences were absolutely stunning, with cameras doing 360-degree turns, cool slo-mos and acrobatic fight choreography. The humor has worn off by the second, even if the camerawork is still spectacular. The music is very good, too, from the use of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" to making John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" into a stirring anthem.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for violence and language."

RUNNING TIME: 141 minutes.

"Battle of the Sexes"

Can an inspirational movie also be a drag?

That's the distinct feeling one can't shake walking out of "Battle of the Sexes ," a fictionalized rendering of the 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old Billie Jean King and 55-yearold hustler Bobby Riggs and the circumstances surrounding it.

At stake is the opportunity for women in tennis to even get equal pay consideration, the reputation of a player who could have just stayed in her lane and the perceptions of society at large and, perhaps most importantly, the men in power.

"I'm going to be the best," says Emma Stone playing Billie Jean. "That way I can really change things."

Fast forward 44 years: We're still here, aren't we?

"Battle of the Sexes," directed by the "Little Miss Sunshine" team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and written by Simon Beaufoy ("Slumdog Millionaire"), is on the whole a fairly standard, if unexceptional film that has two major things going for it: Emma Stone and timeliness.

The story begins by establishing Billie Jean as the best female player in the world — celebrated and adored everywhere she goes — but still not worthy of even half of the prize money top male tennis players were getting in 1972.

A well-cast Stone, fresh off her Oscar win for playing an aspiring actress in "La La Land," transforms into the quiet, driven and sharp tennis pro with the help of a dye job and wire rim glasses.

"Victoria & Abdul"

Stop us if this sounds familiar: A tall, dark, bearded servant of rough breeding comes from far away to suddenly charm a grumpy, widowed Queen Victoria and thus upend Britain's royal court at the turn of the 20th century.

You were perhaps thinking of the film "Mrs. Brown," starring Judi Dench as the monarch and Bill Connolly as her Scottish underling, John Brown? Well, hold on. A new movie has come along exactly 20 years later with an eerily similar plot. Either Victoria was a creature of habit in her attachments or her filmmakers are.

Substitute Connolly with Ali Fazal and you get "Victoria & Abdul," a film about the then-most powerful woman on earth's second unusually intimate relationship with a commoner. In this case, a Muslim from India in 1887.

Fascinatingly, Dench is back as the monarch, two decades after she played Victoria and earned an Oscar nomination for it. It's a privilege to watch her revisit the crusty, we-are-not-amused queen, who is now in the twilight of her life. Dench is riveting, unsentimental, impatient and gloriously brittle. Sometimes all she does is offer an irritated sigh, speaking volumes. "Everyone I loved has died and I just go on and on," she cries.

Dench is well supported — the cast includes the marvelous Eddie Izzard, the late Tim Pigott-Smith and the imperious Michael Gambon — and the pomp and highly choreographed English ceremonialism is captured beautifully by director Stephen Frears, who knows a thing or two about royalty, having directed Helen Mirren in "The Queen."

There's only one major problem: The man at the center, Abdul Karim. He remains a blank canvas, his motives unexplored, his interior or domestic life uncaptured. He is called "the brown John Brown" and offers no riposte.

"Mark Felt"

As a lifetime Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and No. 2 to J. Edgar Hoover, Mark Felt was not exactly an ordinary man, but he was, it seems, a highly unlikely candidate to topple a presidency. Felt was the man behind Deep Throat, the Watergate whistleblower who led Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to the explosive truth behind that break-in. He lived only as a shadowy mystery in the popular imagination until he gave up his long-held secret in 2005, a few years before he died. By then what he represented had already transcended anything an actual human could live up to.

It's not a surprise then that the fictionalized telling of his story in "Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House " is a little underwhelming. The mundanities of the truth could hardly be as sexy as decades of intrigue and mythology enshrined in history and the enduring greatness of "All the President's Men." But director Peter Landesman ("Concussion") and star Liam Neeson nonetheless manage to weave together a fairly compelling (if disputed ) tick-tock of how it all went down from Felt's purview.

And it all started with a slight. We're introduced to Felt in his ordinary suburban home, getting ready for another day of work at the Bureau. He's a tall and soft-spoken man who hides the dirty secrets of the country, and his organization, behind a stoic poker face. A few characters at the outset tell him (read: us) how loyal and reliable and competent he is — a "golden retriever" for whomever is in power. When J. Edgar Hoover dies, Felt is passed over for that top position in favor of Nixon favorite L. Patrick Gray (Marton Csokas) — a mighty snub that sows the seed of discontentment in Felt.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some language."

RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes.

"Battle of the Sexes" a timely story

After trying logic on Association of Tennis Professionals head Jack Kramer (Bill Pullman, who smiles sweetly as he spouts sexist fictions), she and eight other female players boycott the tournament and form their own with the help of Gladys Heldman (a chainsmokin', fast-talkin', no-nonsense doer played by a fabulously styled Sarah Silverman) and a Virginia Slims sponsorship.

It's in this climate that Bobby Riggs (played with great panache by Steve Carell), a bored, washed up pro with a wealthy wife (Elizabeth Shue) and a gambling problem proposes a male vs. female tennis match with him playing the self-titled "male chauvinist pig" and the woman as the "hairy-legged feminist."

Billie Jean says no at first, but after Bobby crushes Aussie tennis champ Margaret Court, she decides she has to play in order to redeem her sport.

Behind all of this, the movie attempts to take on the personal lives of the key players — Bobby's gambling, failing marriage and strained relationship with his grown son, and Billie Jean's struggle with her own marriage to a man (Austin Stowell) and a fledgling affair with a woman, Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough).

As well-intentioned as it is, this background is all very thinly drawn and suspiciously Hollywood-ized. "Battle of the Sexes" revels in the "can you believe men said/did/ thought this" factor at the expense of much of the storytelling and character development.

"American Made" has a very average feel

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Occasionally, a great biopic can be made that teaches someone something about a famous figure that they didn't know much about before. Consider "Ray" when you read this. Ray Charles was world famous and enormously popular before Jamie Foxx knocked his part out of the park. But much more exists at the heart of a man than his fame.

Just as often, these types of films can shed light on a figure we know everything about; this would be the "Lincoln" conceit. Leave it to Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis (arguably the greatest director and actor of their respective generations) to bring pathos and unexpected excellence to the nation's sixteenth

President. That's the power of this popular genre when it's done right.

When it's done wrong - and this happens far more often - the movies lose some of the romanticism that should be lavished on their focal character. Such is the case with Barry Seal and the story of the nation that allowed him to flourish in this weekend's "American Made".

Barry Seal's story is unbelievable and that's exactly what the trailer for the movie made clear to us. We weren't going to believe this guy or the bill of goods he's claiming to sell. But I was intrigued. I'd never heard of Seal, but I know enough to trust in the enthusiasm a n d s m i l e o f To m C r u i s e i n the title role. Barry was a TWA pilot in the late 1970s when his penchant for smuggling in Cuban cigars caught the attention of a CIA handler (Domhnall Gleeson)

named "Schafer". Apparently, that's all it takes for some guys to step into the breach for service to their nation - being approached by a guy in a bar. A couple of quick exchanges later and Barry's involved in flying his own twin engine plane all about Central America taking spy photos of military installations, drug processing centers, and anything else that could be remotely useful to the boys in George Bush's Agency offices. Crazy as this sounds, and suspicious though it may be, all the really tricky stuff came later.

During his routine missions to Central America, Barry became close with a pre-coup Manuel Noriega (Alberto Ospino) and influential in the foundation of the Medellin cocaine cartel. When the Sandanistas and Contras went to

war in the early 1980s, and with the blessing of Ollie North (Robert Farrior) and more people than we will probably ever know, Barry cashed in big time. He started trading the guns he'd ferry in from the U.S. to the cartel for raw cocaine that he'd fly back to New Orleans in exchange for $2000 per kilogram. The politics of the entire scheme are very entertaining to watch. Barry spends months and months doing this work every day, eventually recruiting a squadron of his own pilots that used simple tactics to stay ahead of the DEA and military radar. This was the era of "Just Say No" and Ronald Reagan's War on Drugs was a big reason to keep it all on the downlow. Another good reason to hold his tongue would be to stay on the right side of his terse friendship with the cartel's head, Pablo

All of this is tremendous and built largely on known f acts (though liberal license is taken to make it a real Hollywood affair). The problem is that the movie spends way too much time showing us how Barry went about hiding literal mountains of cash from the more honest branches of our federal government. It's more obsessed with how his wife (Sarah Wright) spends millions on jewelry than in explaining the intricacies of the actual Iran-Contra deal and what ultimately took down Barry Seal. Entertaining, but not educational makes "American Made" an incredibly average biopic.

"American Made" runs 115 minutes and is rated R for language throughout and some sexuality/nudity. I give this film one star out of four.

Religion Brown talks religion, science and new novel NEW YORK (AP) — Dan Brown is once again taking on the big questions.

"Will God survive science?" asks the author of the blockbuster "The Da Vinci Code" and other philosophicalreligious thrillers during a recent interview. "All the gods of our past have fallen. So the question now is: Are we naive to think the gods of today won't suffer the same fate?"

His new novel is "Origin," already a chart-topper on Amazon.com, and for Brown fans a familiar blend of travelogue, history, conspiracies and whodunit, with asides on everything from the poetry of William Blake to the rise and fall of fascism in Spain.

Brown protagonist Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist, is in Spain and back in danger. A former student, Edmond Kirsch, has been assassinated just as he's ready to unveil a scientific-technological breakthrough that he promises will

bring about the downfall of Western religion and revolutionize how people think of life and death.

Langdon, with the help of a prince's wayward lover and a voice of artificial intelligence named Winston, attempts to find out what Kirsch had planned.

"The Da Vinci Code" outraged church officials and scholars with such suggestions as Jesus and Mary married and had children. Brown acknowledged that the controversy led him to avoid larger religious questions in his follow-up novel, "The Lost Symbol," but his skepticism remains. A native and longtime resident of New Hampshire, he remembered visiting Boston's Museum of Science as a boy and being confused by the theory of evolution and how it contradicted the story of Adam and Eve. Back home, Brown asked a priest about the differences.

"This guy said, 'Nice boys don't ask that question.' I did

what every little boy does, I started asking the questions," he says. "I gravitated towards science. Faith became difficult for me."

Brown has the time and money to research his settings firsthand and spent extensive time in Spain over the past few years. The country appeals to him, he said, because of its blend of old and new, of supercomputers and deep roots in Western religion. The violent police actions against Catalans voting on independence were "heartbreaking" but didn't shock him; the "fault lines" of Spanish culture were the reason he wanted to write about it.

Speaking from a sky-high floor of a midtown Manhattan hotel, looking out on the city on a sunny fall afternoon, the 53-year-old Brown also discussed his feelings about technology, the response to his books and the future of Robert Langdon.

For The Edge The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra honors the legacy of Music Director David Robertson, whose remarkable 13-year tenure will conclude at the close the SLSO’s 138th season.

Defined by musical excellence, widespread acclaim, artistic partnerships, innovative prog ra mi n g, Gra m m y a w a rd -w i n n i n g recordings, and unprecedented orchestral achievements, the Robertson era is recognized as one of this storied institution’s most illuminating. The SLSO’s 2017/2018 season pays tribute to Robertson as both a musical visionary and a man of the people, who built the SLSO into a 21st-century orchestra.

Robertson’s farewell season includes a celebration of Mozart, a California tour, and a season finale featuring Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra joining forces with the SLSO to perform Marsalis’ Swing Symphony.

Robertson said: “A goal for programming the upcoming season was to share with our audiences - both those who are sitting at Powell Hall and those who join us from around the globe via live broadcasts - the breadth of programming that is possible with a venue such as Powell Hall. I believe we have an absolutely thrilling season. Every time I walk on stage with this orchestra, I am filled with delight. It’s been an incredible privilege to musically lead this organization.”

Farewell season highlights include: • Robertson will open the 2017/2018 season with a two-week celebration of Mozart, including six piano concertos with Emanuel Ax (September 23 – October 1, 2017). For the season finale, Robertson will treat audiences to Swing Symphony featuring Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center

• Robertson will join pianist Orli Shaham, who is his wife and a frequent SLSO guest artist, on stage at Powell Hall for a special performance of Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (October 21 & 22, 2017).

• Additionally, John Adams’ Violin Concerto, which was recorded live at Powell Hall in September of 2016, with Leila Josefowicz and Robertson will be released on Nonesuch Records during the 17/18 season.

• The 17/18 season will also mark Robertson’s fourth California tour with the SLSO. The one-week tour includes four performances in four California cities: Palm Desert at the McCallum Theatre; Santa Barbara at the Granada Theatre; Davis at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, University of California, Davis; and Palo Alto at the Bing Concert Hall, Stanford University (January 15-19, 2018).

• Other season highlights include: Beethoven’s Missa solemnis (November 18 & 19, 2017), the annual BMO Private Bank New Year’s Eve Concert (December 31, 2017), John Adams’ Harmonielehre (January 26 & 27, 2018), and Bruckner Symphony No. 4 (April 27 & 28, 2018).

• Robertson’s extraordinary musical contributions will be recognized at the SLSO’s annual black-tie fundraising gala. The gala will include a special performance from Robertson and pianist Simon Trpčeski (April 14, 2018).

He also serves as chief conductor and artistic director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Australia and has previously been principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Orchestra National de Lyon and the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris. As music director of the SLSO, Robertson has solidified the orchestra’s standing as one of the nation’s most enduring and innovative.

His established relationships with artists and composers is deeply rooted, and is evidenced by the orchestra’s strong relationship with composer John Adams. Their 2014 release of City Noir (Nonesuch Records)—comprising works by Adams performed by the SLSO with Robertson—won the Grammy Award for best orchestral performance. Robertson is devoted to supporting young musicians and has worked with students at festivals in Aspen, Tanglewood, Lucerne, at the Paris Conservatoire, the Juilliard School, Music Academy of the West, and the National Orchestra Institute. In 2014, he led the USA Coast to Coast tour of the National Youth Orchestra of Carnegie Hall. Musical America’s conductor of the year in 2000, Robertson is the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates.

He was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010 and awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordres des Arts et des Lettres in 2011. He is married to pianist Orli Shaham and has four children.

Schedule released for 2017-18 season For The Edge

he Masterworks Chorale and Children’s Choruses, under the direction of Dr. Stephen Mager, are set to celebrate their 44th Concert Season with a transcendent schedule of musical programs, including Vivaldi’s “Magnificat!” and Faure’s “Requiem.”

One of the most popular concerts of the season, “Broadway Pops,” will be at Bellecourt Manor and feature hit tunes from the movies.

The season opens at 3 p.m., October 15 at St. Clare Catholic Church in O’Fallon, Ill., with “Celtic Voices:” A celebration of folk music ancient and new from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

A highlight of this lovely concert will be Bagpiper Matt Pantaleoni and Soprano Stella Markou. Both guest performers are well known throughout the St. Louis and Midwest regions.

“Magnificat! A Masterworks Christmas” will also feature the Masterworks Children’s Choruses and professional Orchestra at 7:30 p.m., December 10, at St. Clare Church in O’Fallon. As one of Southern Illinois’ most beautiful holiday concerts, there will be a sing-a-along with favorite carols and the traditional, moving candlelight procession.

The Broadway Pops! Dinner Theater will be on March 3, 2018 with the chorale, children’s choruses and jazz ensemble singing favorite movie tunes in a true dinner theater atmosphere with a scrumptious three-course meal provided by the excellent chefs and staff at Bellecourt Manor in Belleville. Doors open at 6 p.m., music begins at 7 p.m. and a cash bar will be available.

The final concert of the Masterworks Chorale season will have two performances: 7:30 p.m., May 5, 2018 at Chapel of the Camelite Monastery in St. Louis; and again at 3 p.m., May 6, 2018, at St. Paul UCC in Belleville.

Faure’s “Requiem” will feature Organist Andrew Peters plus rarely performed sacred masterworks by Poulenc, Durufle and Villette.

The Children’s Chorus and Youth Chorale will present their own fall and spring concerts at 3 p.m., October 22 and 3 p.m. April 22, 2018, both at St. Paul UCC in Belleville.

Music Tuning in Great Rivers Choral Society announces schedule

The Great Rivers Choral Society (GRCS), an adult choir of mixed voices serving the Riverbend area of Southern Illinois, is pleased to announce the kickoff of the 2017-2018 season.

“We’re really excited about the upcoming s e a s o n , ” s a i d D r. R o n a l d A b r a h a m , GRCS Music Director. “We’ll be tackling new works by Randall Stroope and René Clausen as well as some familiar pop arrangements and more traditional choral music – and some old favorites that longtime audience members may recognize.”

The concert series begins in the fall (Oct. 7, 14-15) with “Beginnings: Seasons, Love and Life,” presenting some of the finest choral works from the eighteenth century t o m od ern c o mpo s e r s c re a t i n g t o d a y.

The concert will feature selections from Haydn's Creation and Randall Thompson's glorious 'Alleluia" as well as newer works.

In December, the choir will be joined by a Brass Ensemble to help celebrate the Holiday Season. Music will include "Carols for Brass and Choir” and selections from Bach's triumphant "Christmas Oratorio.”

And the Spring Finale will celebrate the approaching summer with “Boys of Summer: Beach Boys, Beatles, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.”

All concerts are free to the public, with a f re e - w i l l o ff e r i n g t a k e n d u r i n g t h e performances.

“We’re trying some new things this year,” Dr. Abraham said, “and the choir is coming in with renewed energy. For example, we held four Summer Sings in Alton and

invited audience members to sing with us. It was a great way to get to know the community and find new members who are looking to join their voices in song.”

SLSO announces Live at the Pulitzer series

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, announced that tickets for St. Louis Symphony Live at the Pulitzer are on-sale now. The 15th season of the series will offer contemporary classical works, carefully selected by the SLSO, which complement the Pulitzer’s exhibitions. The Arts Laumeier Sculpture Park to spotlight Yvonne Osei For The Edge Laumeier Sculpture Park presents Yvonne Osei: Tailored Landscapes for the 2017 Kranzberg Exhibition Series, November 4, 2017–March 4, 2018, in the Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center Whitaker Foundation Gallery. The exhibition is curated

by Dana Turkovic; the series is supported by Nancy and Ken Kranzberg.

C o n c e p t u a l a r t i s t Yv o n n e Osei creates a large-scale photo installation to occupy the breadth and width of the indoor gallery, c o n s t ru c t i n g a n e n v i ro n m e n t where textiles create landscape.

Inspired by both the cultural and physical landscapes of the Park, Osei weaves design motifs from her home country of Ghana into her photographic and videographic documentation of the Park to create new and unique patterns for Laumeier. Using her textural understanding of fashion design to mold and manipulate an adhesive fabric, Osei creates an environment that uses the architecture of the gallery as figure and form. With Tailored Landscapes, Osei continues her inquiry utilizing the import of textiles as a medium to celebrate diversity in culture and in nature. “ Ta i l o r e d Landscapes contextualizes textiles as physical and metaphorical landscapes,” says Osei. “Throughout the past year, I have photographed various sites within the Park to capture visitors’ interactions and use of the space. For this exhibition, I use the photographs to create a collection of vibrantly patterned, textile designs that bear a strong resemblance to traditional West African fabrics commonly worn in my home country of Ghana.”

Laumeier Sculpture Park is free and open daily from 8:00 a.m.–30 minutes past sunset. The Adam Aronson Fine Arts Center is open daily from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

Learn the art of collage using cell phone photography to create a visual narrative of Laumeier ’s landscape. Artist Biography Yv o n n e O s e i w a s b o r n i n Germany to Ghanaian parents.

She received her M.F.A. in 2016 from Washington University in St. Louis, where she was a Chancellors Graduate Fellow, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer T. Olin Fellow and Danforth Scholar. She received her B.F.A. from Webster University, St. Louis, in 2013. Selected exhibitions and performances include the University o f H o u s t o n , Te x a s ; O v e r l a n d Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Kansas; Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Massachusetts; Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden; Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, Washington University, St. Louis; Saint Louis Art Museum; Bruno David Gallery, St. Louis; Bijlmermeer, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Ariana Park, Geneva, Switzerland; Giardini della Biennale, Venice, Italy; PLUG Projects, Kansas City; Lone Star Art District, San Antonio; Des Lee Gallery, St. Louis; and the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis. St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce rescheduled performance dates for "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" in Concert.

T h e n e w c o n c e r t d a t e s a re Thursday, April 5, 2018, and S a t u rd a y, A p r i l 7 , 2 0 1 8 . T h e concerts were originally scheduled for September 15 and 16, 2017.

Daniel O'Donnell to appear at The Fox

The Rep announces its 2017-18 Studio Theatre season

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis has announced its 2017-2018 Studio Theatre season: Heisenberg, October 25-November 12, 2017, Faceless, January 17-February 4, 2018 and Caught, March 7-25, 2018.

Heisenberg, by Simon Stephens and directed by The Rep’s Augustin Family Artistic Director Steven Woolf, opens the season.

A serendipitous encounter at a London train station propels two very different people into a shared orbit. Georgie is crass, deeply odd and impulsive. On a whim, she kisses the neck of Alex, a much older and more subdued man who is sitting by himself. In the unexpected conversations that follow, Georgie and Alex discover shared passions amidst the uncertainty of personal connection.

This life-affirming play uncovers the extraordinary in the everyday.

Next up is Faceless, by Selina

Filligner and directed by BJ Jones.

Two young women face off in a courtroom, locked in a battle of wills and theologies. Susie Glenn, 18, is on trial. Radicalized online into planning acts of terrorism, she’s zealously committed to her cause. Her prosecutor, Claire Fathi, is a Harvard-educated Muslim woman who lives the faith that Susie professes to understand. Their edgy exchanges create a propulsive, escalating tension that makes this brilliantly topical play a true legal thriller.

Th e Studio Theatre ser ies concludes with Caught, by Christopher Chen and directed by The Rep’s associate artistic director Seth Gordon. In the era of “fake news,” Caught creates a bracingly unique experience that will keep you wondering what’s real and what’s theatre. An art exhibition by a Chinese dissident is the first phase of a multi-layered puzzle, which

presents the audience with an everchanging set of rules. Chen’s piece deftly examines the blurred lines between truth and artifice, both in the theatre and in life.

Great burgers, including the J-Bird topped with a sunny side up egg.

The chicken wings are pretty good, too. Try the sweet heat, they aren't really spicy, more of a sweet chili taste. If you're looking for a unique experience check out the salmon reuben. It will confuse your palate at first, but you won't be disappointed.

It's small, so can get a little packed, but has friendly service and a pretty good craft beer menu to pass the time.

As long as you go green the grilled food keeps coming. Anything from turkey wrapped in bacon to prime rib to grilled pineapple to salmon to chicken hearts, it's amazing the stuff they will bring.
