St. Louis Regional Aiport to host Annual Open House and Fly In Event will pay tribute to Joe Meyer and Allen Cassens For The Edge

O

n Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., St. Louis Regional Airport will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of their Annual Open House and Fly In. The event has grown phenomenally since it was re-started in 1994. Last year 100 airplanes and more than 300 automobiles from 6 states participated. This year a hovercraft and radio-controlled planes will join the festivities.

The car show was added to the event in 2009 and it has quickly become one of the largest shows in the Midwest attracting entries from as far away as Tennessee, Iowa and Wisconsin. The Jersey County Street Machine Association (JCSMA) coordinates both the show and a swap meet for car enthusiasts. New technology will be showcased as

kids age 8-17 can return with their parents for free flights sponsored by the EAA Chapter 864 Young Eagles.

Youth are encouraged to do advance registration for the free flights Saturday during the Fly In. Admission and parking are completely free. Parking is located just off of Hwy. 111 directly in front of the airport. A map and event details are available at www. stlouisregional.com.

Last year SIUE’s solar race car was on display and this year a hovercraft will be operating on the circle around the F-4 in front of the Airport’s High Flyer’s Grille.

The East Side RC Club will show off their radio-controlled model airplanes and helicopters, including a half-scale Edge 540 powered by a 275 cc gasoline engine. There will be demonstrations as allowed by weather and the control tower.

Fly Ins were originally big events in the early days of the Airport.

In the 1950’s Cessna’s largest dealership in the world, Walston Aviation was located at the Airport which was called Civic Memorial back then. Walston would display their planes and showcase WWII aircraft.

“This year will be a special one for us as we pay a tribute to Joe Meyer who was instrumental in re-starting

the Fly In tradition,” said David Miller, airport manager. “Both Joe and fellow pilot Allen Cassens who also died on Friday, June 13 of this year were active leaders in Airport activities.”

Miller says that in honor of Meyer and Cassens, everyone is working extra-hard to make this the best event in history. There are already a number of planes signed up as well as an OH58 Military Helicopter.

Pilots are encouraged to do advance registration by calling St. Louis Regional at 618-259-2531.

Food and drink will be on sale and families are welcome to bring picnic baskets. There will be activities for kids and a multinational firearms display that will give adults and kids alike a close up view of historical weapons. The Amateur Radio Emergency Service will have a demonstration station on-the-air.

The Hettenhausen Center for t h e A r t s ’ f re e F i l m A r t S e r i e s p re s e n t s f o u r a w a rd - w i n n i n g , critically acclaimed films this season.

The 2014-2015 Film Art Series explores the art of communication, which is the theme of the academic year at McKendree University.

Each will begin at 7 p.m. in the Hett auditorium on the Lebanon, Ill., campus. The Leon and Helen Church Family F o u n d a t i o n s p o n s o r s t h e f re e series, which is open to the public. Flea market returns to Grafton

The Riverside Flea Market in Grafton has returned to Grafton. The flea market is

held monthly on the fourth weekend, beginning with the March flea market. The market schedule will continue through October in Grafton.

Music Tuning in Marty Stuart to open Sheldon Folk Series

The Sheldon presents Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives, Friday, October 3 at 8 p.m. in the perfect acoustics of the Sheldon Concert Hall. Music Tuning in GACA's 2014-15 season under way

It seems only a few weeks ago that John Davidson was playing the season finale for the Greater Alton Concert Assocation . The group wrapped up a great 73rd season after being entertained by The Four Freshmen, Double Grande, The Gothard Sisters and The Masters of Motown. Pearl Jam plans tour

Pearl Jam announced recently that they will perform 10 additional concert dates this October around their previously announced headlining slots at Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Pearl Jam’s fall dates kick off in Cincinnati, OH on October 1st and wrap in Denver, CO on October 22nd. This tour includes the band’s first ever stops in Tulsa, OK, Lincoln, NE and Moline, IL and marks the first time the band will return to Memphis, TN since 2000.

The tour will stop at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis on Oct. 3.

Religion briefs Christian leaders urge Obama to address plight of religious minorities

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. and Middle East Christian leaders hope President Obama won't overlook the plight of religious minorities when he tells Americans how he'll respond to the Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

On the eve of Obama's address to the nation, Cardinal Donald Wuerl welcomed the Middle East's Christian patriarchs to a Washington summit.

Nina Shea, director of the Hudson Institute's Center for Religious Freedom, said it's not enough for the U.S. and allied forces to degrade and destroy the Islamic State group. She said President Obama also should address the plight of religious minorities who are being

French imams to use pulpit against Islamic State

PARIS (AP) — French Muslim leaders are urging imams to preach against the Islamic State group and offer a message of support for Christians in the Middle East.

Christians there are fleeing the militant organization by the thousands as they face a choice between conversion to Islam or death.

On Tuesday, moderate Muslim

leaders called on French mosques nationwide to offer prayers for endangered Christians and send a message to young people that the Islamic State group is neither Muslim nor a state.

The rector of Paris' principal mosque said it was crucial to support Christians against barbarity.

French young people make up the largest number of European jihadis heading to fight in Syria and Iraq.

Fundamental problems plague Seattle megachurch

S E AT T L E ( A P ) — S e a t t l e megachurch Mars Hill is closing some of its branches and making plans to lay off dozens of employees amid controversy surrounding its lead pastor.

The Seattle Times says financial problems in the wake of falling

attendance are forcing the cutbacks.

Since 1996, the church has grown quickly to reach 15 branches in five states. Now, Mars Hill leaders say they plan to cut 30 to 40 percent

of a paid staff numbering about 100. These cuts will follow other departures in recent weeks by pastors who say they are angry or uneasy about the church's direction.

Travel Annual festival planned in Versailles For The Edge If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, visitors to the Lake of the Ozarks area's two apple festivals will enjoy twice the benefits - and have lots of fun - at these longtime annual events. Versailles is the home of the Olde Tyme Apple Festival on Oct. 4 and Apple Butter Days will be held Oct. 17-18 at the Camden County Museum in Linn Creek.

The City of Versailles is hosting the Olde Tyme Apple Festival for the 35th year in 2014. The festival begins early with the Olde Tyme Apple Festival and Super Senior 5K runs at 7 a.m., followed by the festival's 2-mile walk beginning at 7:15 a.m. and the half-mile Kids Fun Run at 8:15 a.m.

By 9 a.m., more than 300 vendors are expected to line the streets around the town square for an arts and crafts fair. Food vendors will offer sweet apple treats like apple dumplings, caramel apples and apple butter, as well as other favorite festival foods. The Fun Zone for kids and the Tractor and Engine display also open at 9 a.m.

This year's parade, which begins at 10 a.m., will be a "gas," as floats offer their own take on this year's theme - "Jumpin' and Jivin' to the 1940s."

Vendors will be selling all sorts of apple-inspired goodies at the Olde Tyme Apple Festival in Versailles.

Entries in the Apple Pie Baking Contest will be auctioned off at noon, offering a delicious souvenir of the festival to the highest bidders.

Toes will be tapping as contestants rosin up their bows and play for prizes in the 1 p.m. Olde Tyme Fiddle contest.

On Saturday evening, racers will rev their engines in a Compact Figure 8 Race at the Morgan County Fairgrounds on Highway 52. The Royal Theatre's performances of "The Sound of Music" coincide with the festival. The play will begin

nightly at 7 p.m. from Thursday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 4, as well as the following weekend, Oct. 9-11.

Though the festival officially begins on Saturday morning, the fun begins on Friday evening with the crowning of festival royalty from 5:30-6:30 p.m., the judging of the Apple Pie Baking Contest from 5:307:30 p.m. The evening also features a car cruise at the B & B Drive-in at 6:30 p.m., followed by a sock hop from 7-11 p.m.

An Olde Tyme Apple Festival 3-person scramble golf tournament is scheduled for a noon shotgun start on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Rolling Hills Country Club, located at the junction of Highways 52 and 5. The tournament is open to the public and Rolling Hills will handle pairings for individual golfers.

Apples are the centerpiece of another Lake of the Ozarks area hometown festival the weekend of Oct. 17-18, as Linn Creek celebrates Apple Butter Days at the Camden County Museum. The festival is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with

local artists and crafters showcasing their creativity in the arts and crafts show each day.

Visitors enjoying the vibrant fall colors of the trees in the Lake's hills and valleys will want to add this festival to their itinerary. Apple Butter Days is the ideal place to take a break from "leaf-peeping" to enjoy a warm bowl of soup or chili for lunch, topped off by a slice of apple pie. If one slice is not enough, the hot-from-the-oven apple desserts will be available to take home, by the slice or whole pie.

The air will be filled with the scent of apples as apple butter is also prepared on-site. Attendees will be able to buy jars of apple butter while it is still warm from the fire under the big iron kettle where it is cooked. Galena Country Fair marks 35 years For The Edge Many artists apply, but only 150 are chosen. That's just one of the magic ingredients in the Galena Country Fair's recipe for success. Pick a three-day October weekend at the peak of autumn color. Locate it in picturesque Galena, Ill., where Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin meet on the Mississippi River.

Add local food, wine, music and voila! You get a fabulous annual fair that attracts artists and artisans from throughout the Midwest, along with thousands of fun-loving customers.

This year's 35th Annual Galena Country Fair is Columbus Day Weekend, Oct. 11 & 12, in Grant City Park, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This is a juried arts and crafts fair that selects artists and artisans based on quality, originality and variety. There are 150 booths displaying and selling paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery, textiles, photography, clothing, jewelry, toys, baskets

and seasonal decorations.

Fair food booths, run by area non-profits, sell caramel apples, fudge, hand-cut French fries, funnel cakes, ice cream, bratwurst, loaded baked potatoes and more.

Farm markets offer local maple syrup, honey, apples, pumpkins, squash, black walnuts, bittersweet, Indian corn and dried flowers.

The Gazebo Wine Garden serves Galena Cellars wine, cheese, sausage and a European-style breakfast.

The Country Bake Shop sells homemade cakes, pies, breads, rolls and cookies made by some of Jo Daviess County's best cooks.

Live entertainment includes bands, folk music and Irish dancers.

A special section just for kids features games, face painting, sand bottle necklaces and a playground.

Fair admission is a suggested donation of $2 per person.

Parking near the fair is $5 per day. Remote parking and shuttle service are free. Grant Park is on the east side of the Galena River, within easy walking distance of historic sites and downtown shops and restaurants.

The volunteer-organized fair gives approximately $75,000 annually to non-profit organizations and supports a grant program that benefits emergency services and preparedness, programs for youth and initiatives to improve the well-being of the citizens of Jo Daviess County.

"Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"

After being clonked over the head in 1944's "Murder, My Sweet," Raymond Chandler's immortal private eye Philip Marlowe wryly narrated the experience of being knocked out: "A black pool opened up at my feet. I jumped in."

In "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," a belated, 3-D sequel to 2005's "Sin City," cultishly-adored graphic novelist Frank Miller and genre-exploiting director Robert Rodriguez have again jumped right into the same dark abyss Dick Powell's Marlowe fell into, into the same noir sea — or, at least, some hyper-stylized version of it. This is hardboiled on heroin.

Both "Sin City" movies are double layers of aesthetic idolatry: Miller, famed for his "Dark Knight" reimagining of Batman, worships at the pulp altar of Chandler and Mickey Spillane, while Rodriguez is slavishly devoted to turning Miller's two-dimensional drawings into cinematic flesh. (Miller's name precedes the film's title and he shares directing credit with Rodriguez.) They each approach their tasks with gusto that can only be admired, even if the results can't.

Like its predecessor, "A Dame to Kill For" was made with an almost entirely digital palate, placing actors — Mickey Rourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Eva Green — on a starkly black-and-white canvas in a fictional (but very Los Angeles-like) permanent-midnight metropolis of rampant crime, extreme brutality and skin-baring luridness.

It's described with tough-guy poetry like: "the kind of place your father doesn't want to talk about."

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity and brief drug use."

There are many differences between America's troubled exit from Iraq and its ramshackle retreat from Vietnam.

But the U.S. flight from Saigon as seen in Rory Kennedy's documentary "Last Days in Vietnam" has incredible, unmistakable resonance on the political, ethical and military confusion that occurs when, after years of war, a far-away nation pulls up stakes.

These are scenes of a humbled superpower and the terrifying vacuum left behind. South Vietnamese soldiers (allies to the U.S. through years of combat) mobbing the last World Airways flight out of Da Nang as it moves down the runway. Packed refugees crouching around the pool of the U.S. embassy in Saigon. Helicopters being pushed into the ocean so that more could land on a destroyer escort. (The boat, the Kirk, received 17 helicopter loads of refugees.)

"It looked like something out of Exodus," remembers an American soldier in the film.

The end came two years after a 1973 peace accord, one celebrated with Bloody Marys at the U.S. embassy. But the agreement between President Richard Nixon and the North Vietnamese Army proved empty. After Nixon was impeached, North Vietnam launched a major attack on the South, and streamed down the coast largely unabated. The U.S., tired from the long, aimless war, no longer put up a fight. President Gerald Ford couldn't even get Congress to approve some $700 million in aid, leaving little support for South Vietnam.

"The Longest Week"

In "The Longest Week," Jason Bateman plays a privileged, pampered, narcissistic New Yorker whose sole effort at productivity in life is his meandering work on a novel called "The Directionless Generation."

This may be a winking reference to the character himself, who clearly lacks direction, but alas, it's an even more prescient reference to the movie as a whole. There are moments here and there to be enjoyed, mainly for the slick visuals (and wonderfully hip New York apartments), but basically it feels like a directionless enterprise. And though the film is only 86 minutes long, it tends to feel bloated and even a bit tedious by the end — perhaps not an entire generation long, but too long nonetheless.

It also feels derivative of other filmmaking styles. Writerdirector Peter Glanz, making his debut feature, is clearly a Woody Allen fan; he uses the same jazzy-type music to accompany his dreamily appealing views of New York City, and he likes psychoanalysis scenes, too. Heck, the first scene has our main character, Conrad, venting to his analyst about his troubles with women, and the analyst is none other than Allen favorite Tony Roberts. Conrad even refers to himself as "Jungian."

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexual content and smoking."

RUNNING TIME: 86 minutes.

"This Is Where I Leave You"

Somebody dies. Family gathers to mourn. Everybody's stuck in one house, with all their quirks and foibles and enough emotional baggage to fill an aircraft carrier. What could go wrong? Ha ha. What couldn't?

This scenario could be a drama or a comedy — or, in the case of "This Is Where I Leave You," both: a dramedy. In the best dramedies, of course, laughter and tears alternate seamlessly and gracefully, and you leave both entertained and enlightened.

Alas, this isn't that film.

Instead, "This Is Where I Leave You," directed by Shawn Levy and adapted from Jonathan Tropper's novel by the author himself, seems to be constantly questioning — or doubting — what it is. Which means that just when it enters into some meaty issues that deserve serious treatment, it gets nervous and falls into forced comedy — or full-on slapstick.

Which can get grating.

And it's a shame, because the film has an A-list ensemble cast, headed by Jason Bateman and Tina Fey, but also featuring nice work from Jane Fonda, Connie Britton, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Debra Monk and more. A cast like that deserves an A-list movie; they got maybe a solid B. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for language, sexual content and some drug use."

RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes.

"Tracks"

The movies, it seems, are increasingly headed down paths in the woods, out to open water and, in the case of John Curran's excellent new film "Tracks," into the deepest reaches of the Australian desert.

Surely our desire to disconnect, to feel the harshness of nature and the quiet of solitude feeds into the appeal of films like last year's near-wordless sea adventure "All Is Lost" with Robert Redford or the upcoming "Wild," in which Reese Witherspoon hikes the Pacific Coast Trail. But while those movies have their attributes, I'll take "Tracks" for the way it subtly and unsentimentally builds emotionally, step by step, across 1,700 miles.

That's the distance traveled by Robyn Davidson ( p l a y e d b y M i a Wa s i k o w s k a ) , w h o s e j o u r n e y w a s chronicled by National Geographic. She then wrote an acclaimed 1980 memoir, "Tracks," about the trip in which she and her dog, Diggity, with four camels in tow, trekked across the Western Australian desert, ending at the Indian Ocean.

It's a mad journey that earns her the moniker "Camel Lady" and turned her into a reluctant celebrity. "Tracks" gradually unspools why she's spending half a year alone and in the harshest of conditions, filling in with flashbacks to her mother's suicide and the simultaneous and (to the young Robyn) equally devastating loss of her childhood dog.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements, some partial nudity, disturbing images and brief strong language."

RUNNING TIME: 112 minutes.

Chastain plays Eleanor — yes, last name Rigby — an anthropology student who never finished her thesis. McAvoy plays Conor, a young bar owner. We meet them as they're discovering the intoxication of first love. It is indeed intoxicating; Chastain and McAvoy have a lovely chemistry.

Cut to an indeterminate time later. Eleanor is pale and troubled. We see her take a desperate act; we don't know why.

The film then follows both Eleanor's route to recovery (we're being intentionally vague here), and Conor's efforts to track her down.

We learn that the two are married, and have suffered a grave setback.

Either Conor or Eleanor is onscreen at all times. Occasionally, they're together.

These scenes are what we wait for: They often crackle with conflicted emotion, and, in one case, deep, unforgettable heartbreak.

Chastain's Eleanor is nervous, flitty, on edge, but every so often her smile breaks the melancholy, and it boy, delivers. This movie only cements Chastain's status as one of the most compelling actors of her generation. It's hard to look away from her. And why would you?

"Dolphin Tale 2" doesn't measure up

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge When "Dolphin Tale" was released in 2011 I had never heard of Winter, the now famous bottlenose dolphin living at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida. The movie was charming and wholesome, good family fun for kids of all ages. There's a new chapter in Winter's story and the fine folks behind the first movie have returned with another installment to tell us all a little about Hope. "Dolphin Tale 2" is sweet alternative to some of the louder and more garish kid-friendly releases so far this year.

Winter is a lucky girl, having lost her tail fluke in a fisherman's net and learning to swim again thanks

to a prosthetic attachment designed by some loving humans like her bro, Sawyer (Nathan Gamble), and the formidable Dr. McCarthy (Morgan Freeman). This sequel really tells more of a story about the whole team behind her inspirational rescue and the other creatures and the aquarium with her. In this case, it goes into great detail about the 2014 incident in which Winter's surrogate mother, Panama, dies from a respiratory ailment caused by her old age. She was forty in Dolphin Years. Per FDA mandate, all captive bottlenose dolphin females must be paired together, a necessity for their species.

Without Panama, Clearwater is faced with the possibility of losing their other star attraction and dear friend for good. Instead, we get to see her

integrated into an environment with Hope, a tiny juvenile rescued from a lagoon where she'd become trapped before learning to forage from her mother. Concurrently, Sawyer is faced with the proposition of leaving Florida for a summer afloat with a Boston university's semester at sea.

The whole thing will bring a tear to your eye, even if it is a tad predictable.

Real life stuff is often magical.

Side stories to parallel the Ballad of Winter & Hope include the rehabilitation of Mandy, a sunburned dolphin, and the release of Mavis, a green sea turtle that was found wrapped up in fishing tackle just near the marina. Mavis is quickly befriended by Rufus, the weirdo pelican that acts just like most pelicans I've ever heard of. The

plight of Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick, Jr.), his daughter, Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff), and the other fine staff at CMA is a substantial set of source material for these films. Writer/director Charles Martin Smith is actively generating ideas for a third film and to me this feels important for the future success of live action children's movies that don't pander to toilet humor or fantasy. The underwater photography is fun, too, even if the movie wasn't filmed for the 3D format. And for all you movie fans out there, know that this picture does find a way to worm in a superfluous scene of dialogue between Morgan Freeman and co-star Ashley Judd, who plays Sawyer's mom, who appear here in their fifth movie

The surprise release of the home invasion thriller "No Good Deedstormed into the box office this weekend and took over the #1 slot from the year's most successful film, Marvel's comic comedy "Guardians of the Galaxy." I credit the fine casting of the fine looking Taraji P. Henson and Idris Elba for that. Next week's openings of YA thriller "The Maze Runner" and "My Old Lady," which features a trio of Oscar nominees/ winners, should offer more than a little to enjoy by all audiences. I'm eagerly awaiting both.

"Dolphin Tale 2" runs 105 minutes and is rated PG for some mild thematic elements. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.
