Pop culture used for inspiration EAC exhibit has roots in video games, comics

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge Fans of comic books and video games won’t want to miss the next Edwardsville Arts Center e x h i b i t t h a t o p e n e d F r i d a y.

“Level-Up: The Art of Geek C u l t u re ” w i l l f e a t u re a r t i s t s inspired by comic books, video games, toys, and other ‘low brow’ source imagery.

Curated by Jason Bly, SIUE Painting and Drawing Instructor, the exhibit will feature the art of nine artists using these pop culture influences as direct or indirect references in each artists’ methodology, content, and use of playful interaction of forms.

“Beyond this child-like s e n s i b i l i t y, a s m a t u re a r t i s t s , contemporary dialogue is engaged through use of symbolism, high craft, and formal approaches to art making.

Through this, artists may charge very playful imagery with underlying adult themes - war, domestic situations, politics, questions of science, etc,” the show description states.

Artists in the show include Angelina Fasano - textiles, Daniel Raedeke - painting, sculpture, 3D modeling; Jeroen Huijbregts - painting, prints; Joseph Page - ceramics; Justin Henry Miller - p a i n t i n g ; R a c h a e l Wi l b u r photography; Thom Whalen - painting, mixed media; Will Rimel - ceramics and Jason Bly – painting.

Bly spoke about what inspired him to come up with this show concept. “I began to think of various ways children may

he said. “When I was younger, I did not necessarily think of them as art, but they acted as seeds for eventually discovering and appreciating art in museums and galleries.”

The show, he pointed out, is a collection of artists who may reference those early memories in their current work. “When selecting artists, it was important to me that the work shown does not operate on references and nostalgia alone, but channels a certain maturity through incredible craft, decisive formal moves, and underlying content,” Bly noted.

“Many are involved in academic environment and well established in gallery representation.”

The gallery work will be displayed side by side with accessories from local retailers including Heroic Adventures comics, toys; Otherside Games board games and Slackers - video games, comics. “I wanted to make the show unique from a regular gallery experience by also showing points of inspiration: actual comic books, toys, video game consoles,” Bly explained. “These are installed within the main gallery where there is a fun blending of fine art and retail items.”

“I worked with the various m a n a g e r s a n d o w n e r s ( D re w Rose - Heroic Adventures, Alex Tidball - Otherside Games and Ryan Smith – Slackers) from local retailers to choose items that would elevate the theme of the show,” Bly added.

One of the featured artists is Rachael Wilbur who works with carefully staged photographs of Barbie dolls in front of real human figures in the backgrounds of the work. “Through clever use of perspective, the dolls appear as large as real people, overlapping

friends and family members in everyday domestic situations,” Bly noted. “I enjoy the surprise of the work, that upon first glance, it seems mundane, but there is something strange about one “person’s” hand, hair, pose – and then the illusion is revealed.”

“They are strange, humorous, and while borrowing from visual components of toys, they obviously have qualities and expose more adult themes. I love the packaging he makes for his sculptures, again blurring lines between art and retail toys,” Bly said.

Daniel Raedeke begins his art by first designing ideas or characters using the computer and then prints them out as 3D models. “He then handcrafts these as larger sculptures while making fine art paintings of the same characters,” Bly explained. “It’s wonderful to see the creative process leap from material to material, while still maintaining the reference point of the original computer model.” “ F o r t h e s h o w, h e i s displaying the computer animation next to the small models, larger sculptures, and paintings altogether in the same space,” Bly added.

Zoo primed for Ottertoberfest

For The Edge Enjoy an otterly fun fall celebration at the Saint Louis Zoo! During the two weekends of Ottertoberfest, the Zoo will be transformed into an Oktoberfest for the whole family with otter-related games and activities for kids, keeper chats and enrichment, and live traditional music.

The event runs Saturdays and Sundays, Oct. 1-9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Each weekend, the little “pups” can engage in a River Ranger game, an “Otter Says” game and a river otter biofact table. Crafts and other activities are designed for ages 2-10.

For the grownups, beer, bratwursts and other specialty concessions will be available for purchase. Hear live “oompah” music from noon to 3 p.m. in Schnuck Family Plaza.

For The Edge Hear the story of an Effingham wife and mother who devoted herself to nursing wounded soldiers during the Civil War. People People planner Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017.

Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between. As the road meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous motes. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road.

Visitors will get their kicks

learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west.

Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 ParkIn Theatre. Artifacts include neon signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer.

Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants west to find a new life. It carried military transports through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California. Route 66 bore witness to the rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps.

By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete.

The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that. Although Route 66 is long gone, relics of it still remain across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an

he Second Annual Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference will be held in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois from October 20-23. As with the inaugural event last year in Edwardsville, the conference will feature several informative speakers covering a variety of topics related to Route 66, as well as many fun activities.

The festivities begin on Thursday evening, October 20th, with a Hot Dog Roast at Sprague’s Super Service Station located at 305 Pine Street in Normal. The Tudor-Revival style building was built in 1931 on Route 66, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town of Normal recently purchased the building to continue the restoration.

Conference sessions begin with a keynote speaker on Friday, October 21st at The Chateau Hotel and Conference Center, 1601 Jumer Drive, Bloomington, then move to Downtown Bloomington. Friday evening is the 90th birthday celebration for Route 66, which includes a dinner and dance party at the Eagle’s Club, 313 S. Main, Bloomington. Route 66 Hall of Fame members will be recognized by Steve Nalefski, McLean County representative of the Route 66 Association of Illinois.

Entertainment includes a local band favorite, Wagon Load a Trouble, and stand-up comedy by Terri Ryburn, who is also the conference organizer.

On Saturday, October 22nd, the conference continues with the second keynote speaker at The Chateau Hotel and Conference Center. Conference sessions will be held once again in Downtown Bloomington at the McLean County Museum of History/Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66 Visitors Center and the Ensenberger Building. A Route 66 Normal Short Film Festival takes place Saturday evening at the Normal Theater, 209 North Street, Normal.

On Sunday, October 23rd, a number of activities will be offered for conference attendees. A bus tour to Pontiac and Atlanta, Illinois will be led by Route 66 historian, author and preservationist, John Weiss. A Haunted Route 66 tour in Downtown Bloomington, will be guided by Deborah Senger from Spirits of Bloomington/Timeless Presentations, the author of an upcoming book entitled, “Haunted Bloomington-

Normal, Illinois”. The 10th Anniversary showing of the Disney movie “Cars” will also be shown at the Normal Theatre that day.

--Friday’s keynote speaker, Cory Jobe, has been the Director of the Illinois Office of Tourism since early 2015 is a strong advocate of leveraging tourism to promote economic development on both the local and state scale. --Saturday’s keynote speaker, Aimee Awanohopay, is the Public Lands Partnership Manager with the American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association [AIANTA]. Her presentation is about AIANTA's "American Indians and Route 66" project, designed to provide the historic and cultural relationship between the Tribes and Route 66, as well as develop interpretation, publications, and a destination website to provide educational and promotional opportunities previously unavailable to the Tribes and other businesses.

--Dave Hoekstra was a columnist and critic for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1985-2014, where he covered everything from music, travel and food to sports, pop culture and history.

While at the Sun-Times he wrote extensively about Route 66 in Illinois. In 2013 he won a Studs Terkel Community Media Award. Dave now hosts "Nocturnal Journal" - a weekend radio show on WGN-720 AM. --Bill Diaz and his talented family hail from Pontiac, Illinois where they apply their artistic gifts at the Diaz Sign Art company. Bill was instrumental in helping design and create the many Wall Dog murals that now adorn the community.

Bill was also responsible for helping put together the very first Wall Dog mural painting project along Route 66 in Atlanta, Illinois in 2002.

--Frank Norris has been involved in research work regarding "The Green Book" a publication created by Victor H. Green, a postal service worker from Harlem, N.Y., who began publishing the guide in 1936. The book was

designed to help African Americans avoid, as Green put it, “embarrassing moments” after motorists started exploring long-distance roadways including Route 66, the nation’s first transcontinental highway. Frank Norris will present a session titled "Courageous Motorists: African American Pioneers on Route 66” during which he will describe the experience of black travelers along Route 66, their strategies for finding available accommodations, and an assessment of the physical legacy of accommodations that welcomed African American motorists. Frank Norris is a historian with the National Park Service in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The office where he works administers or co-administers nine national historic trails as well as the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.

--Kaleigh Moore is the Social Media Coordinator for the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway. She helps oversee the organization's social media efforts and projects like "Selfies on 66" that engage travelers along the Mother Road in Illinois.

In her spare time, she writes for publications like Inc. and Entrepreneur Magazine.

Others must register by September 1 for the reduced rate; the one-day rate is $55. The Fabulous Fox Theatre is excited to announce the return of the extremely popular Ghost Tours this October. The Fabulous Fox Ghost Tours will explore the untold history of the many ghost sightings and unexplained occurrences reported at the Fabulous Fox during its 86-year history. The Fabulous Fox Ghost Tours will offer an evening of spine-chilling tales from Fox staff members and first-hand accounts from investigations by paranormal researchers. Go behind the scenes of the Fabulous Fox to see what happens after the shows have closed and the stage lights go dim.

Guided tours will be offered at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, October 10 and 6 p.m., 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday, October 17 and Monday, October 24. Tickets are $35 each and include a one-hour guided tour of the Fabulous Fox and parking. Tickets will go on sale Friday, September 2 at 10 a.m. at the Fabulous Fox Box Office, by calling 314-534-1111 and online at MetroTix. com. of purchase method. Ghost tours are not recommended for young children.

The St. Louis Paranormal Research Society will be offering two sĂŠances each night; one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. Those interested will be able to purchase tickets at Fox Guest Services in the main lobby during the evening of the tour for a $20 fee.

For The Edge St. Louis Symphony Music Director David Robertson and President & CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard have announced programming for the orchestra’s 2016/17 season—its 137th season and Robertson’s 12th as music director. The secondoldest orchestra in the United States, the STL Symphony offers 25 weeks of classical subscription programs, sponsored

by Wells Fargo Advisors, with 12 of those weeks led by Robertson. In addition, Robertson leads the orchestra in three weeks of tours, including a return to New York’s famed Carnegie Hall. The 2016/17 season runs from Friday, September 16, 2016 through Sunday, May 6, 2017, and includes holiday offerings and special performances.

The STL Symphony continues its tradition of welcoming world-renowned artists to its stage, with 13 guest conductors and soloists making their debuts at Powell Hall in 2016/17.

In addition, 10 STL Symphony musicians make solo appearances with the orchestra, including Concertmaster David Halen, Principal and Assistant Principal Violas Beth Guterman Chu and Jonathan Chu, Principal Flute Mark Sparks, Principal Clarinet Scott Andrews, Principal Bassoon Andrew Cuneo, Horn Julie Thayer, Principal Trumpet Karen Bliznik, Second Trumpet Jeffrey Strong and Bass Trombone Gerard Pagano.

Music Director David Robertson said: “It’s always exciting to announce a new St. Louis Symphony season. In the 2016/17 season, my twelfth as Music Director, we are celebrating an anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s historic flight with a piece by Kurt Weill on Opening Weekend. We are also celebrating the 70th birthday of John Adams, both at Powell Hall with a number of performances, as well as at Carnegie Hall with his oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary. All five Beethoven piano concertos will be performed by five soloists and five conductors throughout

OPENING WEEKEND CELEBRATION Music Director David Robertson opens the 2016/17 season with a nod to the 90th anniversary of Charles Lindbergh’s historic flight across the Atlantic with a program titled “Spirit of St. Louis.” Robertson’s concerts open with Kurt Weill’s cantata, The Flight of Lindbergh, and features the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, under the direction of Amy Kaiser, and narration by Charlie Brennan from NewsRadio 1120 KMOX. The program continues with Pierre Boulez’s Dialogue de l’ombre double, with STL Symphony Principal Clarinet Scott Andrews as soloist, and closes with Debussy’s orchestral showpiece, La Mer (September 16 & 17, 2016).

SALUTE TO JOHN ADAMS The STL Symphony is acclaimed for outstanding recordings and performances of the works of John Adams, and is proud to celebrate the great American composer on the occasion of his 70th birthday. As part of this celebration during 2016/17, Robertson and the orchestra perform Adams’ Violin Concerto, with soloist Leila Josefowicz (September 30-October 1, 2016), The Chairman Dances (January 13-15, 2017), and, with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus, his cantatas On the Transmigration of Souls—paired with Mozart’s Requiem—(November 18-20, 2016) and The Gospel According to the Other Mary (March 24, 26, 2017). The work was originally written for Pagano in 2010 with piano accompaniment. This performance marks the premiere of his arrangement for trombone and orchestra of the piece that was inspired by St. Louis’ Gateway Arch.

Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts announces lineup

Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts, a nonprofit that brings world-class musical artists from around the world to St. Louis, announces its fourth series of free chamber music concerts. Performing in each concert are Celeste Boyer, violin; Bjorn Ranheim, cello; Jennifer Mazzoni, flute; and Matthew Mazzoni, piano.

Boyer is currently the second associate concertmaster with the Saint Louis Symphony. Ranheim is a cellist in the Saint Louis Symphony, a member of the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis, as well as The 442s. Mrs. Mazzoni is an avid chamber musician and performs re g u l a r l y a s a d u o w i t h h e r husband, pianist Matthew Mazzoni.

Mr. Mazzoni, director of Cathedral Concertsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Chamber Music Series, is a solo and collaborative performing artist, recording artist, teacher and music director at Central Presbyterian Church in Clayton.

T h e S e r i e s , s p o n s o re d b y Fontbonne University, provides listeners around the St. Louis area with great musical works by Bach, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. "Hands of Stone"

"Hands of Stone " is a sprawling yet fairly conventional biopic about the Panamanian boxing champion Roberto Duran — a man The Associated Press once declared the 7th greatest fighter and No. 1 lightweight of the 20th century. For the uninitiated, the title refers to Duran's nickname. He was known for packing a mighty hit and (usually) winning.

When he faced Sugar Ray Leonard for the Welterweight title in 1980, he was 71-1. He won that match too, only to forfeit it six months later in a bizarre re-match that's become known as the "No Mas Fight." Popular myth would have us all believe that Duran said "No Mas" to end the match partway through.

He'd fallen out of shape in the months between the two fights.

That event is dramatized in writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz's film, with Edgar Ramirez as Duran and the singer Usher Raymond as Leonard. But while it might be the showdown that has cemented Duran's unique place in history (even if he probably didn't utter those words), it's hardly the main event of "Hands of Stone," which strives to give context to Duran's life — complications and all.

Our entry to the story is oddly through the famed coach Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro), who comes to observe Duran in action before agreeing to train him. He's already great at this point, but Arcel is there to take him to the next level — namely the United States. Duran isn't interested at first — he hates the U.S. for what they've done to his country. The framework allows "Hands of Stone" to jump back in time to a glossy reenactment of the 1964 riots over sovereignty of the Panama Canal.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout and some sexuality/nudity."

RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes.

"Don't Breathe"

To all you Detroit-area robbery crews, we should probably warn you right away: It's just not a good idea to pick 1837 Buena Vista Street for your big — and final — score. Take our word for it, walk away.

Sure, it sounds like an easy hit. The address is a home in a run-down section of the city, so there's nobody around. The house is kind of moldering, too. And, yes, the owner is an old blind man living alone who apparently has a fortune stashed somewhere. But, listen, let this one go.

You won't? Fine. Then beware, you are walking into the well-plotted trap of Fede Alvarez, who made his Hollywood debut with the reboot of the horror classic "Evil Dead," and returns this month with "Don't Breathe ." It pits a team of inept burglars against a homeowner who fights back. In that sense, it's kind of like a twisted "Home Alone" for millennials.

This isn't a gore-fest or a flick that relies on the supernatural.

It's more a thriller wedded to a horror film. Our trio of wouldbe predators quickly becomes hunted by the surprisingly spry old man, who happens to be a military veteran and comfortable with all sorts of weapons. Oh, did we mention his rather nasty dog?

Written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, "Don't Breathe" is almost a throw-back to older horror films. It's meticulously planned and thrillingly satisfying with a camera always a step ahead — if you see an array of sharp tools near the beginning, bet on them being used at some point. Roque Baños' discordant soundtrack manages to capture dread beautifully.

The set-up stars three young Detroiters — a brutish Daniel Zovatto, his lovely girlfriend Jane Levy and their smart friend Dylan Minnette. They have bought into that cliche that somehow makes robbers less villainous — one last job and they're out.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "terror, violence, disturbing content and language including sexual references."

RUNNING TIME:: 88 minutes.

"The Light Between Oceans"

There is no misfortune too shattering for Derek Cianfrance it seems. The writer and director of "Blue Valentine," ''The Place Beyond the Pines" and now, an adaptation of the M.L. Stedman novel "The Light Between Oceans " confidently strides into stories of little hope and painful circumstance, using pretty actors and even prettier settings to create sweeping milieus of human devastation.

But where the dissolving marriage in "Blue Valentine" was so tangibly real that it felt as raw as a breakup, "The Light Between Oceans" crashes into the shores of its own strange story, pummeling the audience with Big Feelings that never quite cut through. Perhaps it's because it follows the characters down a morally murky path of increasingly poor choices where only one is given any depth after the original sin. But we'll get to that later.

"The Light Between Oceans" starts out as a handsome love story in a handsome place, even if dread looms in the angry seas and winds enveloping this picturesque seaside town. Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender, looking rugged and warweary) has just returned from service in World War I and takes a position as the caretaker of a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Australia. He's warned that the last man in the job went a little crazy out there on his own, and everyone seems to think that it's just not a good idea to live on that island without a wife.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic material and some sexual content."

RUNNING TIME: 132 minutes.

"Morgan"

Even if you guess the twist in "Morgan" early on, the title character is still an interesting one.

Played by relative newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy, Morgan is enigmatic and otherworldly, at once childlike and wise. She's also an expensive, top-secret experiment, and she appears to be malfunctioning.

This debut feature from Luke Scott — produced by his Oscar-nominated dad, Ridley Scott — is a sci-fi tale about artificial intelligence. Morgan is a bioengineered being made from synthetic DNA, a lab-grown creature that looks like a delicate teenage girl.

Movies have long been interested in genetically or mechanically enhanced humanoids, whether as killers ("The Terminator") or companions ("Her," ''Ex-Machina"). Morgan is something in between.

With whitened eyebrows and a non-human sheen to her skin, Taylor-Joy brings the character convincingly to life with a mix of gentle innocence and robotic indifference. She is the most compelling aspect of the film.

Unfortunately, the screenplay by Seth Owen follows a predictable and action-packed path rather than one that explores what is ostensibly its central question: Can technology replicate human emotions?

The story starts with Morgan unexpectedly attacking one of her handlers. The violent misbehavior draws corporate fixer Lee Weathers (Kate Mara) to the secret lab where Morgan was made — an underground bunker in the middle of nowhere — to assess the experiment's ongoing viability.

Weathers is strictly business, emotionless and humorless in a slim-fitting black suit. She's coolly distant as she interviews the team of scientists who've been living at the isolated lab for years monitoring Morgan's every move. The group is like family, to Morgan and to each other.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "brutal violence and some language."

RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes.

"Author: The JT LeRoy Story"

To the general public, the name JT LeRoy probably rings only the vaguest of bells, if any at all. It didn't for this particular critic. RUNNING TIME: 110 minutes.

"Sully"

In "Sully," Clint Eastwood's haunted and sterile docudrama of Capt. Chesley Sullenberger's 2009 landing of Flight 1549 on the Hudson, Eastwood has drained away all the superficial, rah-rah heroism of Sullenberger's great feat, but he has also sucked the life out of it.

"Sully" is every bit an Eastwood picture. Instead of the rush of euphoria that the "Miracle on the Hudson" swept through a New York accustomed to only tragedy from the air, we get a weary parable that, as Eastwood has often done, pulls the curtain away from a celebrated public figure and reveals the inner trauma and sense of responsibility that lies inside a regular man thrust into an unwanted spotlight.

Sullenberger, played with typical dignity and sensitivity by Tom Hanks, is not celebrated here with a parade of a movie.

He is beset by demons and anxieties, and the almost comically harsh scrutiny of an aviation safety panel, which, relying on automated flight simulations, believes Sullenberger could have safely returned to LaGuardia or made it over the New Jersey shoreline to Teterboro.

Their snide, judgmental presence is there throughout "Sully," as they try to second guess his decision-making. It's an exaggeration. The film's climactic grilling of Sullenberger at a public hearing was referred to in news reports as "gentle, respectful and at times downright congenial."

But Eastwood and screenwriter Todd Komarnicki working off of Sullenberger's book "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters," had to find drama somewhere. The entire flight lasted less than six minutes. It was just 208 seconds from bird strike to the frigid Hudson.

How do you make a film out of mere moments, handled with preternatural calm? Eastwood lingers in its aftermath, as Sully remains holed in a Manhattan he has little love for. The narrative is fractured, flashing backward and forward, into the pilot's past and occasionally into his nightmares.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some peril and brief strong language."

But JT LeRoy was not real. He was a persona created by Laura Albert, who was

a depressed and overweight 30-something who would often call child crisis lines as various characters. JT LeRoy was just one of them, and he stuck.

In the documentary, Albert, now fierce and trim, takes the audience from the moment of JT's ("Jeremiah Terminator") origin to the reputation shattering exposes in 2006, opening up and articulating as best she can the how and the why of it all.

At s o me p o in t, af ter J T LeR oy has become notable and fetishized for his reclusiveness, Albert (who also took on the physical persona of his manager and friend "Speedie") starts using her sister-in-law Savannah Knoop as a stand-in for JT LeRoy. Once there's a beautiful, androgynous body attached to the tragic backstory, this odd

little posse becomes unstoppable in the alternative fashion, literary and Hollywood communities. "JT LeRoy" was there.

Things get even stranger, but it's best just to experience it. Albert has a lighthearted "who cares" way of talking about everything and makes for a fascinating, if not entirely trustworthy, narrator. The treasure is in the recorded phone messages and conversations between JT LeRoy and his celebrity admirers, hangers on and friends — a glimpse into how famous people actually talk to those they consider peers.

"Sully" a fitting tribute to a hero

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge For many, we’re fortunate enough to know our heroes when we see them. My list is pretty sturdy and I don’t usually allow someone to be on it until they’ve proven their merit. Be it my father or Albert Pujols (before the contractual defection), they have to demonstrate a keen ability to excel at their craft – be that parenthood or baseball. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III became a hero to me the day he crash landed a passenger jet into the freezing Hudson River in New York City and walked away to tell the tale. It was a brief event early in 2009, but one that will become a moment that no one will ever forget.

Its brevity, in fact, is what helps form Clint Eastwood’s new film based on Sully’s book, “Highest Duty”, one I ordered from Amazon before I even

left the theatre. It does not help that Tom Hanks fronts the picture in a role that he aces without overplaying it.

The facts of the incident are simple. Sully (Hanks), a veteran pilot with over forty years of experience at the helm, and co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) had just launched their Airbus A320 from LaGuardia airport for a routine skip down to Charlotte when they struck a flock of Canada geese immediately after takeoff. The bird strike disabled both engines and Sully glided the jet into a forced water landing into the icy rivers of the Hudson after being unable to redirect the plane back to either LaGuardia or nearby Teterboro airport in New Jersey. He relied on the fitness of his judgment and his career experience as an advocate for pilot safety and response to bring happy and surprising resolution to the event dubbed “Miracle on the

Hudson”. That all 155 passengers and crew members, including two infant children, were able to escape the sinking plane and continue on with their lives is an unmistakable act of heroism and a source of American pride that I can’t help but tear up thinking about. The movie captures much of this spirit so gracefully that there was a pair of scenes that nearly inspired me to take my feet and applaud. But for the enjoyment of my fellow moviegoers did I not.

Where “Sully” the movie is its most successful is in the understanding of what actually takes place on the screen. Recreating the escape from the plane, with the fifteen dozen survivors floating on the partially submerged wings or in inflatable slides, is technically brilliant. I didn’t really appreciate the logistical needs for the sequence,

involving helicopters and ferryboats until well after my first screening.

The editing, too, is remarkable. You witness the actual water landing – something Hanks’s character points out to the NTSB investigators is not the same things as a crash – more than six times from differing perspectives, overlapping timelines, and through the (not really) impartial eyes of participants like Sully’s wife, Lorraine (Laura Linney). The large cast is filled top to bottom with actors you will recognize, but could never name. They, like New York, have familiarity and diversity in spades, but could be just you or me out for a weekend trip.

The most interesting fact about this movie is that all of the conflict and plot elements revolve around the ideas that there are no villains.

join in for the common good. The meat of the storyline revolves around clearance for the pilots from any wrongdoing by the NTSB who, even for antagonists, aren’t bad people.

The primary trio (Mike O’Malley, Jamey Sheridan, Anna Gunn) are only doing their jobs to make sure that the great and timeless deed done here was actually the right things to do. Vindication now known, the route is fraught with sleepless nights for Sully and Skiles, who Eckhart portrays perfectly in the supporting role, as only men who’ve known all along that they acted honorably when the doubt of others must be assuaged. The film is more than an adequate tribute to their finest hour.

“Sully” runs 96 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some peril and brief strong language. I give this film four stars out of four.

Many at the Vatican would agree, but the Catholic Church nevertheless has a grueling process to make it official, involving volumes of historical research, the hunt for miracles and teams of experts to weigh the evidence. In Mother Teresa's case, the process will come to a formal end Sunday when Pope Francis declares the church's newest saint. Here's a look at the process: HOW SAINTS ARE MADE The process to find a new saint usually begins in the diocese where he or she lived or died; in Mother Teresa's case, Kolkata. A postulator — essentially the cheerleader spearheading the project — gathers testimony and documentation and presents the case to the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints. If the congregation's experts agree the candidate lived a virtuous life, the case is forwarded to the pope, who signs a decree attesting to the candidate's "heroic virtues."

The Arts Artistic adventures The Muny Kids to appear in The Rep’s production of "A Christmas Carol"

For the first time ever, two of St. Louis’s most celebrated theatre institutions will collaborate in the casting of a production.

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis is proud to announce the casting of 14 of The Muny Kids in its holiday production of A Christmas Carol, running November 30 – December 24 at The Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts. These talented young performers will join an all-star local cast in bringing Charles Dickens’ beloved tale to The Rep stage for the first time in 35 years.

“The Muny Kids will fill a variety of roles throughout the show,” said The Rep’s Augustin Family Artistic Director Steven Woolf, who will also direct A Christmas Carol. “They’ll add great atmosphere and spirit to the goings on. We’re very impressed with the talent of these young performers.”

The Muny Kids performing troupe serves as goodwill ambassadors to the people of St. Louis and the surrounding region. A performance

and training ground for talented y o u n g p e o p l e , t h e p ro g r a m spotlights children who demonstrate exceptional voice and dance talent, stage presence, dedication and discipline.

Their casting represents a historic collaboration between The Rep, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary season, and The Muny, which will ring in its centennial in 2018.

"How wonderful to collaborate with our friends at The Rep during their gala 50th year," said Muny Artistic Director and Executive Producer Mike Isaacson. The Studio Theatre series opens on October 26 in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts with Mothers and Sons by Terrence McNally.

Mothers and Sons is a moving illustration of how societal changes have mpacted gay Americans in the past three decades. The show spotlights the journey of Katharine, a woman who is still coming to terms with the AIDS-related death of her son 20 years prior. She seeks out her son’s former partner, Cal, only to discover that he now has a husband and a six-year-old son. As she and Cal explore memories of someone they both loved, Katharine begins a rocky journey toward reconciliation with the side of her son that she never understood.

by Stuart Carden. The brutal rhythm of boxing underscores this brilliantly stylized drama. Rising black prizefighter Jay “The Sport” Jackson dominates his opponents, but the harsh social realities of the early 1900s force him to fight twice as hard to earn recognition outside

of the ring. Loosely based on iconic fighter Jack Johnson, The Royale brings us ringside to one man’s quest for victory against all odds.

Its foundings go back to 1673 when Father Jacques Marquette, in recording his famous journey down the Mississippi River with Louis Joliet, described the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Piasaâ&#x20AC;? as a bird-like monster painted high on the bluffs along the Mississippi River by the Cahokia Indians, where Alton, Illinois, now stands.
