Fall Festival to have a prehistoric feel For The Edge Visitors to this year's Coal Country Chamber of Commerce's annual Fall Festival-scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at Benld City Park--will have a rare opportunity to view models of dinosaur species that have been extinct for millions of years.

The display will feature dinosaur models produced by CM Studio, a local studio known for creating scientifically accurate, life-sized sculptures of dinosaurs for museums and other venues. Local residents rarely get to glimpse the studio's work--the studio itself doesn't offer tours and one of the nearest examples of its work is a life-sized pteranodon that soars over an exhibit at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

The display will include a life-sized Tyrannosaurus Rex head, complete with a mouth filled with sharp, flesh-tearing teeth; a life-sized Utahraptor, a species similar to the velociraptors made famous by the Jurassic Park movies; and a life-sized Triceratops skull.

Brian Page, one of the principal artists for CM Studio said the display also will include other specimens, depending upon what the studio has available at the time of the festival.

"What's great about the display is that it lets us expose kids to some of our models that they would have to go to a museum to see otherwise," Page said. " Sponsored by the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce, the Fall Festival will feature for than 60 arts and crafts vendors, a variety of food and beverages and free entertainment.

Steve Davis, whose' "Memories of Elvis" show also will feature entertainers who channel Buddy Holly and Patsy Cline, tops the entertainment schedule, along with Nashville recording artist Amy Hailstone, who grew up in Gillespie, and the Dixie Dudes and Dance traditional Dixieland music act. Other festival features include a petting zoo, a live reptile display where visitors can actually handle the animals and the CCCC ChooChoo train offering free rides around the park.

The annual Tour de Coal bike ride also is scheduled in conjunction with the festival.

This will be the second year for the CM Studio dinosaurs to make an appearance at the festival. In addition to the display, Page said the studio plans to have inexpensive souvenir items for sale, such as printed t-shirts, available for sale this year.

The studio was founded 35 years ago by Charlie McGrady, a local artist who found a niche sculpting high-end, scientifically accurate dinosaur sculptures for museums.

"Charlie was into natural history and natural history sculpting, including dinosaurs," Page said. "He started to get a name for himself for the small models he was making and he decided to move into making life-sized models." Over the years, the studio's reputation has grown to the point that it now produces life-sized sculptures of 75 different dinosaur species ranging from 120 feet in length to the chicken-sized Comsognathus–the so-called "compy" that figured in the "Lost World" movie in the Jurassic Park franchise.

"People think of dinosaurs as being large, lumbering beasts, but that's not necessarily the case," Page said.

Now housed in a former lumber yard warehouse, CM Studio is littered with dinosaurs in various states of completion.

The process of developing a new sculpture is laborious and detailed. The studio artists work with a specialist in dinosaur anatomy who is skilled at rendering drawings that essentially add flesh and skin to the skeletons of known species. Using those drawings as a reference, the artists create a miniature sculpture that is later recreated as a fullsized model. Building the full-sized scupture, particularly for the larger species, involves building a metal armature--essentially a metal skeleton to hold hundreds of pounds of clay that artists use to create the creature's body.

Finally, the artists use stamps and other tools to add skin texture and other details.

Once the clay model is complete, casts are made with silicone rubber that are then used to cast pieces of the beast in plastic resin.

Those sections are then assembled into the finished sculpture and painted.

For the most part, Page said he and McGrady do the bulk of the work.

"When we have a really large project, we may bring in other people to help with the sculpting and painting," Page said.

Among the challenges of the work, according to Page, is keeping up with new scientific discoveries about various dinosaur s p e ci e s . F or e x amp l e, i t i s b e comin g increasingly apparent that a number of species had rudimentary feathers similar to modern day birds--one reason many paleontologists now believe birds are directly descended from dinosaur ancestors.

Evidence of the feathers is embedded in the rock surrounding fossil bones that previously was being removed to get to the bones themselves.

"They were digging through the evidence of feathers and skin impressions in the rock matrix," Page said. "Now they are finding a lot of feathers because they know to be looking for them."

One project--a sculpture of a Postosuchus-had to be put on hold temporarily as the artists awaited the release of a scientific paper addressing whether the creature walked on all fours or stood upright on two legs. The length of the front legs had led to speculation that the creature walked on four legs, but the new research revealed it was more likely to have walked upright--a fact that was reflected in the final sculpture.

Such changes in interpretation is not u n u s u a l . T h e I g u a n o d o n , p re v i o u s l y thought to have walked on four legs, is now known to have walked upright. One of the more unusual projects done by the studio was a recreation on a quadruped Iguanodon sculpture that was displayed near the Crystal Palace during the 1851 World's Fair in London. Though now known to be inaccurate, a wealthy client wanted the sculpture recreated for his estate on the Isle of Mann. He even directed the artists to create an open space in the animal's back for a sitting area where he and his guests could sip cocktails and enjoy the evening sunsets.

Page said the studio is proud of a lifesized model of a Brachylophosaurus, based on fossil remains discovered in 2000 that were mummified before fossilization.

Studies of the fossil, dubbed "Leonardo," enabled the artists to not only duplicate the body mass of the dinosaur, but also authentically duplicate its skin texture. A photo of a the sculpture accompanied a Newsweek article about the dinosaur the significance of the mummified remains.

"It's probably the most accurate reconstruction of a dinosaur ever made," Page said.

Page said the studio looks forward to bringing its display to the Fall Festival in part because of the opportunity it provides for children.

"There is such a thing as 'extreme inherent interests' among children, and dinosaurs is one of the things they're interested in," he said. Participating in the Fall Festival allows CM Studio to tap into that "inherent interest," according to Page, "and add some stealth education."

SIUE Arts & Issues season gets underway

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge The 2016-17 line-up has been announced for the SIUE Arts & Issues season.

This year's season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. in the Dunham Hall Theater on Sept. 16 with Chicago Dance Crash's “Evil & Good” production.

Sponsored by Commerce Bank, this performance is a part of the university's annual Xfest, a week-long “Xperimental theatre” featuring different performances each day by dance companies and theatre groups across the Midwest.

“Evil & Good,” Chicago Dance Crash's (CDC) newest production is inspired by CDC’s street dance aesthetic and utilizes the company’s signature blend of concert dance and hip-hop. This explosive, fulllength conceptual piece is inspired by the world’s constant struggle between its angels and demons.

A couple of weeks later, Arts & Issues will present the first-featurelength documentary about the revolutionary and brilliant Chicago architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924).

The documentary, “Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture” begins at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Dunham Hall Theater.

According to the SIUE A&I brochure, Sullivan was known by historians as the “father of the skyscraper” and creator of the iconic phrase ”form follows function.”

“Sullivan was on top of his profession in 1890. Then a series of setbacks plunged him into destitute obscurity from which he never fully recovered. Yet his persistent belief in the power of his ideas created some of the most beautiful buildings ever created in the United States, and inspired Sullivan’s protégé, Frank Lloyd Wright, to fulfill his own dream of a truly American style of architecture,” the A&I brochure states.

People 10th annual public event scheduled Nov. 10 For The Edge S a i n t L o u i s F a s h i o n We e k (STLFW), now in its tenth year as St. Louis’ fashion scene catalyst, is launching a brand-new signature event as the keystone of its 2016 season, and supporting more than ten weeks of fashion-focused activity this fall.

ALIVE magazine launched STLFW in 2006 with a mission to support and elevate the local fashion community and provide opportunities for both local and national designers to connect with a Midwest audience. H

ad not a pilot in Owensboro, Ky. encouraged John Hanekamp, years ago at the age of 13, to take flying lessons, the now-retired Glen Carbon resident might never have gone on to earn his pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license, and he may never have developed his lifetime love of flying.

Now his goal is to introduce todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s youth to the joys of flying. His immediate goal is to get the word out about a fly-in scheduled for Sept. 24 at the St. Louis Regional Airport, in Bethalto.

The day promises food and plenty of flying, the highlight being a Young Eagle Flights for kids ages 8 to 17.

The food and flights are free, but those who fly must register ahead of time and have a parent or guardian with them when they do, according to information from the event sponsor, the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 864. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Last year we had well over 350 kids flying,â&#x20AC;? Hanekamp said recently.

The young flyers will be able to ride along in a plane affectionately called The Tin Goose, has been advertised as the largest civilian passenger aircraft of its time. Hanekamp has a current pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license.

For the past five years now, he has been helping at the fly-in in Bethalto, and at last year â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event he was at the controls of a plane that took 30 kids up in the air during the morning and early afternoon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our goal is introduce kids to flying in order to address the

enormous pilot shortage that is upon us,â&#x20AC;? Hanekamp says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Between freight and passenger traffic, the industry is growing so much. And thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in addition to pilots retiring.â&#x20AC;?

The airline industry estimates that 8,000 pilots will be needed in the U.S. alone by the year 2025. The Chinese, Hanekamp added, are training pilots at flight schools in Arizona and at flight schools back in China, to meet their need for a hundred new pilots a week.

An August 2015 article in Air & Space Magazine mentions that about 200 Chinese companies applied for general aviation licenses, most for corporate or private flying.

To meet increasing demands, the country will support as many as 100 airlines in the next few decades, the magazine quotes Chinese officials as saying.

Hanekamp predicts 30,000 new pilots will be needed world-wide by the year 2025.

The EEA will be at the airport in Bethalto on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22 and 23, to book the flights. The Tin Goose will

be at the airport in the week leading up to the fly-in on the 24th. â&#x20AC;&#x153;On the 24th, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll probably have 50 or 60 planes from all over the Midwest, including Warbirds and experimental planes,â&#x20AC;? Hanekamp said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The airport is a wonderful place to get kids interested.â&#x20AC;?

A car show will be going on at the same time as the fly-in, and raffle tickets will also be on sale.

Hanekamp has had the flight bug ever since that day in Owensboro, Ky. On that day an Ozark Airlines pilot encouraged the 13-year-old to head over to a nearby Cessna dealership and get a coupon out of a flying magazine. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I took it over, and they gave me flying lessons,â&#x20AC;? he says now.

Hanekamp went on to get his pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license at the age of 21. He went on to a career as a grain trader and an energy trader. For the past six years or so he has owned his commercially-owned airplane, which will be on hand at the fly-in.

Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

To m a r k t h i s m i l e s t o n e , t h e Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017.

Route 66 touched eight states a n d c o n n e c t e d m o re t h a n 1 0 0 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between.

Route 66 opened on Nov. 11, 1926, as the major highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants

west to find a new life. It carried military transports through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s , to uris ts trav e le d its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California.

R o u t e 6 6 b o re w i t n e s s t o t h e rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in re s t a u r a n t s , w i t h m o t e l s a n d cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps.

By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete.

The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that.

Although Route 66 is long g o n e , re l i c s o f i t s t i l l re m a i n across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an adventure and mom-andpop diners and motels ruled the road.

Religion Mother Teresa endured "dark night of the soul" VATICAN CITY (AP) — When Pope Francis canonizes Mother Teresa on Sunday, he'll be honoring a nun who won admirers around the world and a Nobel Peace Prize for her joy-filled dedication to the "poorest of the poor." He'll also be recognizing holiness in a woman who felt so abandoned by God that she was unable to pray and was convinced, despite her ever-present smile, that she was experiencing the "tortures of hell."

For nearly 50 years, Mother Teresa endured what the church calls a "dark night of the soul" — a period of spiritual doubt, despair and loneliness that many of the great mystics experienced, her namesake St. Therese of Lisieux included. In Mother Teresa's case, the dark night lasted most of her adult life — an almost unheard of trial.

No one but Mother Teresa's spiritual directors and bishop knew of her spiritual agony until her correspondence came to light during her beatification cause. The letters were then made available to the general public in a 2007 book,

Francis has made the canonization the high point of his Jubilee of Mercy, a yearlong emphasis on the church's merciful side. Francis has an obvious interest in highlighting Mother Teresa's mercy-filled service to outcasts on the periphery, given that her life's work exemplifies the priorities of his own pontificate.

But Francis is also sending a more subtle message to the faithful through the canonization of the ethnic Albanian nun: That saints can be imperfect — they can suffer as Mother Teresa did and even feel unloved by God, said Ines Angeli Murzaku, a professor of church history at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and herself a native Albanian.

"That existential periphery which is suffering and being marginalized, he wants to bring that to the attention of the world," she said in a telephone interview. Mother Teresa "is so real. She's not remote. She's not a perfect, perfect saint."

Rep announces Studio Theatre series

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) has announced its 2016-2017 season of performances in the Studio Theatre: Mothers and Sons, October 26-November 13, 2016; Constellations, January 1 8 - F e b ru a r y 5 , 2 0 1 7 ; a n d T h e Royale, March 8-26, 2017.

The Studio Theatre series opens on October 26 in the Emerson Studio Theatre at the L o re t t o - H i l t o n C e n t e r f o r t h e Performing Arts with Mothers and Sons by Terrence McNally.

Mothers and Sons is a moving illustration of how societal changes have mpacted gay Americans in the past three decades. The show spotlights the journey of Katharine, a woman who is still coming to terms with the AIDS-related death of her son 20 years prior.

"Ben-Hur"

Remaking a film that won 11 Academy Awards invites inevitable comparison, but the latest adaptation of "Ben-Hur" distinguishes itself from William Wyler's 1959 epic by retooling key character and story elements. It's still a big, biblical-era tale of power, loyalty and vengeance, only refocused through rosecolored lenses with an eye toward appealing to the lucrative faith-based audience.

Produced by the power couple behind "The Bible" miniseries, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, this "Ben Hur" is like an abbreviated, more Christ-centered take on Wyler's film.

It boasts similar sweeping desert landscapes, well-dressed Roman armies and heart-pounding equestrian action. Some shots pay clear homage to the Oscar-winning classic. The violence here is far more graphic, thanks to modern special effects (and sensibilities). This film is also an hour and 40 minutes shorter than Wyler's epic (thank goodness).

But where Wyler's version is ultimately about family and unrequited romance, director Timur Bekmambetov is more interested in redemption and the words of Jesus Christ.

Jesus was silent and his face unseen in Wyler's film. Played handsomely by Rodrigo Santoro, Jesus has a lot to say here.

Screenwriters Keith Clarke and Oscar winner John Ridley ("12 Years a Slave") start with the premise and characters from the original 1880 novel. Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and Messala (Toby Kebbell) are like brothers until Messala becomes a Roman officer who falsely accuses Judah of betrayal. Messala condemns Judah to slavery and jails his innocent mother and sister. After years of captivity and an unlikely escape, Judah befriends a horseman who insists he exact vengeance against Messala during the celebrated Roman chariot race.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of violence and disturbing images."

RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes.

"War Dogs"

"War Dogs " is too good of a true story not to get the Hollywood treatment, even if the end result doesn't entirely do justice to the moral ambiguities and larger geopolitical implications of one of the craziest hustles in modern American history.

Essentially, in 2007, a couple of 20-something stoners from Miami Beach landed a nearly $300 million contract from the Department of Defense to supply ammunition to the Afghan military. And, unbeknownst to the U.S. government at the time, many of the supplies they were selling were over 40 years old, manufactured in China and basically unusable.

It's an absolutely insane story of the ambition, delusion and megalomania of a few young strivers who managed to find a lucrative place in the international arms game. The events have been chronicled extensively in the press over the past eight years, including by journalist Guy Lawson, whose Rolling Stone article "The Stoner Arms Dealers" and book became the basis for the film.

Director and co-writer Todd Phillips, best known for chestthumping comedies like "The Hangover" trilogy, reaches beyond his comfort zone to tell this complicated and fraught tale. The film struggles to find the right tone, and instead of consistency goes for a more disjointed kitchen-sink approach that juggles satire, bro fantasy and high-stakes thriller with varying results.

Miles Teller stars as David Packouz, a struggling massage therapist who takes up with Efraim Diveroli (Jonah Hill) in a moment of desperation. A much shadier figure but a childhood friend nonetheless, Efraim has the plan to game the government contracts system and make a few bucks from the war.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout, drug use and some sexual references."

RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes.

"Hands of Stone"

"Hands of Stone " is a sprawling yet fairly conventional biopic about the Panamanian boxing champion Roberto Duran — a man The Associated Press once declared the 7th greatest fighter and No. 1 lightweight of the 20th century. For the uninitiated, the title refers to Duran's nickname. He was known for packing a mighty hit and (usually) winning.

When he faced Sugar Ray Leonard for the Welterweight title in 1980, he was 71-1. He won that match too, only to forfeit it six months later in a bizarre re-match that's become known as the "No Mas Fight." Popular myth would have us all believe that Duran said "No Mas" to end the match partway through.

He'd fallen out of shape in the months between the two fights.

That event is dramatized in writer-director Jonathan Jakubowicz's film, with Edgar Ramirez as Duran and the singer Usher Raymond as Leonard. But while it might be the showdown that has cemented Duran's unique place in history (even if he probably didn't utter those words), it's hardly the main event of "Hands of Stone," which strives to give context to Duran's life — complications and all.

Our entry to the story is oddly through the famed coach Ray Arcel (Robert De Niro), who comes to observe Duran in action before agreeing to train him. He's already great at this point, but Arcel is there to take him to the next level — namely the United States. Duran isn't interested at first — he hates the U.S. for what they've done to his country. The framework allows "Hands of Stone" to jump back in time to a glossy reenactment of the 1964 riots over sovereignty of the Panama Canal.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language throughout and some sexuality/nudity."

RUNNING TIME: 105 minutes.

"Don't Breathe"

To all you Detroit-area robbery crews, we should probably warn you right away: It's just not a good idea to pick 1837 Buena Vista Street for your big — and final — score. Take our word for it, walk away.

Sure, it sounds like an easy hit. The address is a home in a run-down section of the city, so there's nobody around. The house is kind of moldering, too. And, yes, the owner is an old blind man living alone who apparently has a fortune stashed somewhere. But, listen, let this one go.

You won't? Fine. Then beware, you are walking into the well-plotted trap of Fede Alvarez, who made his Hollywood debut with the reboot of the horror classic "Evil Dead," and returns this month with "Don't Breathe ." It pits a team of inept burglars against a homeowner who fights back. In that sense, it's kind of like a twisted "Home Alone" for millennials.

This isn't a gore-fest or a flick that relies on the supernatural.

It's more a thriller wedded to a horror film. Our trio of wouldbe predators quickly becomes hunted by the surprisingly spry old man, who happens to be a military veteran and comfortable with all sorts of weapons. Oh, did we mention his rather nasty dog?

Written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, "Don't Breathe" is almost a throw-back to older horror films. It's meticulously planned and thrillingly satisfying with a camera always a step ahead — if you see an array of sharp tools near the beginning, bet on them being used at some point. Roque Baños' discordant soundtrack manages to capture dread beautifully.

The set-up stars three young Detroiters — a brutish Daniel Zovatto, his lovely girlfriend Jane Levy and their smart friend Dylan Minnette. They have bought into that cliche that somehow makes robbers less villainous — one last job and they're out.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "terror, violence, disturbing content and language including sexual references."

RUNNING TIME:: 88 minutes.

"The Light Between Oceans"

There is no misfortune too shattering for Derek Cianfrance it seems. The writer and director of "Blue Valentine," ''The Place Beyond the Pines" and now, an adaptation of the M.L. Stedman novel "The Light Between Oceans " confidently strides into stories of little hope and painful circumstance, using pretty actors and even prettier settings to create sweeping milieus of human devastation.

But where the dissolving marriage in "Blue Valentine" was so tangibly real that it felt as raw as a breakup, "The Light Between Oceans" crashes into the shores of its own strange story, pummeling the audience with Big Feelings that never quite cut through. Perhaps it's because it follows the characters down a morally murky path of increasingly poor choices where only one is given any depth after the original sin. But we'll get to that later.

"The Light Between Oceans" starts out as a handsome love story in a handsome place, even if dread looms in the angry seas and winds enveloping this picturesque seaside town. Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender, looking rugged and warweary) has just returned from service in World War I and takes a position as the caretaker of a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Australia. He's warned that the last man in the job went a little crazy out there on his own, and everyone seems to think that it's just not a good idea to live on that island without a wife.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic material and some sexual content."

RUNNING TIME: 132 minutes.

"Morgan"

Even if you guess the twist in "Morgan" early on, the title character is still an interesting one.

Played by relative newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy, Morgan is enigmatic and otherworldly, at once childlike and wise. She's also an expensive, top-secret experiment, and she appears to be malfunctioning.

This debut feature from Luke Scott — produced by his Oscar-nominated dad, Ridley Scott — is a sci-fi tale about artificial intelligence. Morgan is a bioengineered being made from synthetic DNA, a lab-grown creature that looks like a delicate teenage girl.

Movies have long been interested in genetically or mechanically enhanced humanoids, whether as killers ("The Terminator") or companions ("Her," ''Ex-Machina"). Morgan is something in between.

With whitened eyebrows and a non-human sheen to her skin, Taylor-Joy brings the character convincingly to life with a mix of gentle innocence and robotic indifference. She is the most compelling aspect of the film.

Unfortunately, the screenplay by Seth Owen follows a predictable and action-packed path rather than one that explores what is ostensibly its central question: Can technology replicate human emotions?

The story starts with Morgan unexpectedly attacking one of her handlers. The violent misbehavior draws corporate fixer Lee Weathers (Kate Mara) to the secret lab where Morgan was made — an underground bunker in the middle of nowhere — to assess the experiment's ongoing viability.

Weathers is strictly business, emotionless and humorless in a slim-fitting black suit. She's coolly distant as she interviews the team of scientists who've been living at the isolated lab for years monitoring Morgan's every move. The group is like family, to Morgan and to each other.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "brutal violence and some language."

RUNNING TIME: 92 minutes.

Jennifer Jason Leigh plays the attacked caretaker, who insists Morgan "has joy in her heart."

Weathers is unsympathetic and corporateminded. To her, Morgan "is not a she. It's an it."

Weathers is so detached and job-focused, she's like a different species.

Though Michelle Yeoh and Toby Jones co-star as Morgan's creators, and Paul Giamatti makes a memorable if brief appearance

as a psychiatrist who examines the "hybrid biological organism," Taylor-Joy steals her every scene. Whether limited by screenplay or execution, Mara doesn't manage the depth with Weathers that Taylor-Joy brings to Morgan.

Both actresses deliver, though, in their spectacular fight scenes. Weathers and Morgan are much stronger than their tiny frames would suggest, and it's exciting to see two petite women executing the kind of fight choreography usually reserved for big male superheroes.

Still, the predictable twist hampers the story's suspense, and the film doesn't dip beyond the superficial. It hints at the cost of denying emotions and suggests some redemptive magic in nature but never finishes the thought.

"The Light Between Oceans" a bit lacking

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge Michael Fassbender has got to feel like a lottery winner every day when he wakes up. The goodlooking German actor was Oscar nominated last year for playing Steve Jobs. He anchors the current iteration of the “X-Men” franchise as Magneto and is about to launch one for “Assassin’s Creed”.

Now he’s starring in “The Light Between Oceans” this weekend with is real-life girlfriend, the It Girl, Alicia Vikander. That’s the trifecta as far as I’m concerned.

No slouch herself, the duo make for an interesting film that is very emotionally affecting, but leaves little trace once you leave the dark of the auditorium.

Fassbender’s Tom Sherbourne is a damaged man who saw too many

of the atrocities in World War I. Upon his deployment, he gladly accepts the position of lighthouse keeper on an isolated island in the north of Britain where he won’t have to deal with others as he re-finds his sanity. That the former occupant of the job has recently committed suicide notably bothers him, but it is not an important plot point. Instead, the movie turns on a dime to become a love story once Tom is introduced to the daughter of his benefactors in the mainland community where he visits infrequently. Her name is Isabel Graysmark (Vikander) and she’s even more smitten with him than he is with her. That the two have only seemingly met on a pair of brief occasions when she proposes that he propose marriage is of little concern to anyone other than this viewer. Instead, they make off for

life together, alone, on an island for two.

Life for the Sherbournes is hard work, but rewarding and warm.

Isabel builds a home for the two while he protects the shippers that sustain their village. Another turn comes after she suffers an early miscarriage and then another late in term. The tide responds just when she’s filled most with despair and a rowboat beaches after a bad storm that contains a dead man and his infant daughter who is very much alive and in need of a family to help her. Torn between her grief and his sense of responsibility, Isabel and Tom agree to care for the child until she’s able to journey back to from wherever it is she came from. They, of course, fall for her and the girl is dubbed Lucy and raised to be their own.

Actress Florence Clearly, who

plays the small child, may just be the cutest little girl that I’m not personally related to. She mugs for her parents’ affections and charms the dickens out of anyone who comes along. When a visit to the vicar for her christening turns up the possibility that she is the actual daughter of a surviving and aggrieved Hannah (Rachel Weisz), Tom’s sense morality shifts so violently within him that it is visible to the naked eye of any casual moviegoer. He sends at first an anonymous note, and then later, proof that the child lives to her mother, unbeknownst to Isabel. Hannah’s pursuit of the truth leaves no stone unturned and the conclusion of the film is cutting in its depiction of fairness, ethical shortcomings, and justice.

and more than just the tears I shed while taking in this excellent example of the “weepy” genre.

There are a few scenes in this movie that are very well created, even if the sum of the parts isn’t any special whole. Tom speaking i n f ro n t o f t h e t o w n a t t h e lighthouse’s centennial celebration is brief, but moving. Isabel’s silent shrieking as she stands over two rough graves marking the unborn children she lost is haunting. This isn’t a movie that teaches you anything. It’s one that simply exists to manipulate your feelings.

And isn’t that what the game of life is all about?

“The Light Between Oceans” runs 133 minutes and is rated PG-13 for thematic material and some sexual content. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Travel

A ride across the river As fall draws closer, many area residents will be heading out to view the changing colors.

There's no better place to do that than along the Great River Road, with the trees, bluffs and Mississippi River conspiring for breath-taking vistas.

Some go as far as Grafton but, if you've got a couple of extra hours, we suggest you go farther.

Continuing north on Route 100 (the Great River Road) you will encounter the Brussels Ferry landing. It's free â&#x20AC;&#x201C; unlike some others in the region â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and will deliver you into scenic Calhoun County.

On the other side of the Illinois River, the ferry will deposit you on the Illinois River Road. There are fruit and pumpkin stands along the roadway and you'll arrive in the town of Brussels, home of the Wittmond Hotel and its famous family-style meals.

The Illinois River Road continues north out of Brussels in a roller-coaster sort of route that will lead you into Hardin.

Here, you can stop for a bite to eat at either the Illinois Riverdock (try the pork tenderloin) or the Barefoot Bar (try the fried chicken.)

The road continues rolling north, sometimes hard against the bank of the Illinois River, and will take you into Kampsville. It's here you can catch another ferry to recross the Illinois River. (Don't worry, this ferry is free, too.)

Crossing in Kampsville will put you on Route 108 heading east. You'll pass through Eldred and want to turn right on Bluff Street (watch for the sign that says Grafton.)

Bluff Street will run into Route 16 several miles to the south and along this stretch, you'll see glimpses of the bluffs and fall foliage that many will miss.

Route 16 intersects with Route 100 (The Great River Road) and another right turn will take you back to Grafton.

Sure, it's a bit of a drive, but one you'll be glad you took.

And you'll be glad you took the ferries, too, which are an interesting way to travel.

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge When it comes to barbecue there are a lot of places trying to lock down the title as best. I've tried quite a few different ones in my travels and my latest stop is definitely near the top of the list — Bogart's Smokehouse.

T h i s S o u l a rd n e i g h b o rh o o d treasure opened in 2011 at 1627 S. 9th St. and has been gaining steam ever since. There's no doubt St. Louis is a hotbed for barbecue and Bogart's is an excellent place to enjoy some of that top notch cuisine.

From smokin' swine, to babyin' brisket, Bogart's does it all and they keep it simple while doing it. Some of the newer barbecue joints in the area are always trying to overdo it, adding crazy twists on classic barbecue dishes. They try and climb to the top through quirkiness instead of quality.

Now I've said it time and time again, I love creativity and uniqueness in my meals. I applaud individuality in cooking, it's what m a k e s re t u r n c u s t o m e r s , b u t sometimes it can be too much.

I'm not saying Bogart's doesn't have individuality, it definitely does, but they keep the menu small, simple and extremely quality.

Even the atmosphere is simple.

It's a small, corner restaurant with seating for a few dozen patrons inside and a few more picnic tables outside along the street. It does have high ceilings, to give the feeling for a more spacious area and the seats are spread out so you're not right on top of your neighbor.

To add to the experience the staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

It's not uncommon to find long lines at Bogart's with extended

waits when you throw in the service with the excellent grub.

Kelly and I visited midday on a Saturday and surprisingly we didn't have a wait. Of course we did miss out on the burnt ends and the pastrami, which were sold out. They are some of Bogart's specialties.

We had heard excellent reviews on the ribs and decided to go that route. We ordered the half slab of ribs combo, which included a quarter-pound meat of our choice and two sides.

The brisket was our extra meat selection and we went with the pit baked beans and the deviled egg potato salad for our sides.

When your food arrives it's served on a tray with wax paper for the meat, foam cups for the sides and plastic silverware, sticking to

the simple Bogart's format.

Kelly and I were stoked to test out the deviled egg potato salad, which was the first thing we tried.

It wasn't bad, but not quite the rich taste we were hoping for, but when we dug into the pit beans we couldn't have prepared for what we were about to encounter.

The beans are hands down the best I've had to this point in my “you gotta eat” travels. They were unbelievably smokey and hearty in taste. We were practically fighting over the small cup of beans we got with our order. I could have eaten a tub of this scrumptious concoction.

Chef Skip Steele was sitting in the dining area and as he heard us raving of the awesomeness of the pit beans he informed us they have a different taste practically every day. Each day the beans are placed

on the bottom of the smoker behind the restaurant and collect the drippings from all the sensational meats cooked above them — the r i b s , p a s t r a m i , p o r k , t u r k e y, whatever is being cooked.

This is not an uncommon practice for barbecue experts to use, but it seems to me that Bogart's has perfected the science.

When we got to the meat we were already hooked. The brisket was shaved into thin slices and was extremely tender. It had a great pink smoke ring around the outer edges, showcasing a perfectly prepared piece of brisket.

I lathered mine up in some of Bogart's Sweet Maegan Ann barbecue sauce, which is their sweet and smokey Kansas City style sauce. It was definitely my favorite sauce. I bought some to

keep on hand at my house for my work as an amateur smoker and grill master.

Finally we had the ribs. The smoke ring on the ribs was also perfect and pink, as they practically melted away from the bone. They had an unbelievably smokey taste.

The bark on the ribs was fantastic also, though it wasn't too thick which was nice. Bark is the outer, crusted portion of the meat that occurs from rubs melding with the fats and juices from the meat during the smoking process. The bark kind of serves as a cocoon for the succulent meat it surrounds, but it has great flavor also.

Overall Kelly and I combined to give Bogart's four thumbs up. It was an excellent experience. We're not the only ones, because Bogart's is always near or at the top of local barbecue rankings. They've earned it.

Check out their website at bogartssmokehouse.com. Read up on the seasoned veteran staff and peruse the entire menu available, including all their delectable sauces.

I'd love to get back and try the burnt ends, the pastrami, the tritip sirloin, the pulled pork and the turkey. That happens to be all the types of smoked meats they offer that I didn't try on my visit.

If I were you I'd try and show up in non-peak hours like Kelly and I did, but be prepared to miss out on some items. If you want to fight the lines you stand a better chance of enjoying the full experience.

Their summer hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, or until they sell out of food.

Whatever you decide to do, Bogart's Smokehouse is a definite destination when you gotta eat.

Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill 215 Harvard Dr. Edwardsville B e p re p a re d t o w a i t w h e n you visit this new hot spot in Edwardsville, but it's worth it. Make sure to check out the gator bites, they are fantastic. It's alligator meat fried in a corn meal breading. The catfish fillets are fried in the same corn meal breading and equally as good. There are also gator tacos and don't miss “Crabby Monday's Crab Leg Special.” A little pricey though.

Chubby's Warehouse Bar & Grille 1022 E. Broadway Alton Cheap and delicious. The burgers are fantastic here and extremely affordable. They also have a good buffalo chicken sandwich and good tacos. Maybe the best thing they offer is their sweet corn nuggets, you can't go wrong with them. It's cash only so make sure you grab some before you go. Only knock is the service could be a little friendlier.

Mission Taco Joint 908 Lafayette Ave. Soulard

If you like quirky and eclectic twists on Mexican fare then this is the place for you. There are great tacos and burritos like the Brah'rito with carne asada and chipotle bacon. It is freakin' huge, too. They also have torta selections on the menu and a cool carne asada fries choice in the appetizers. Good beer selections there also.

Huddle Bar & Grill 1101 Caseyville Rd. Suite J Caseyville It may look like your average bar, but get a load of the menu and quickly find out it's not. The food is definitely worth a visit. Steak night is a definite time to go. Get a New York strip steak and potato for $9.99. Check out the peanut butter bacon burger, the asparagus in balsamic sauce and the sweet potato fries drizzled with honey, all are delicious choices.

Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd.

Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices.

Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap?

1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment.

A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus, but be prepared to pay, it’s pretty expensive.

Tuning in Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts announces lineup

Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts, a nonprofit that brings worldclass musical artists from around the world to St. Louis, announces its fourth series of free chamber music concerts . Performing in each concert are Celeste Boyer, violin; Bjorn Ranheim, cello; Jennifer Mazzoni, flute; and Matthew Mazzoni, piano.

Boyer is currently the second associate concertmaster with the Saint Louis Symphony. Ranheim is a cellist in the Saint Louis S y m p h o n y, a m e m b e r o f t h e Chamber Music Society of St. Louis, as well as The 442s. Mrs. Mazzoni is an avid chamber musician and performs regularly as a duo with her husband, pianist Matthew Mazzoni. Mr. Mazzoni, director of Cathedral Concerts’ Chamber Music Series, is a solo and collaborative performing artist, recording artist, teacher and music director at Central Presbyterian Church in Clayton.

“It is always an honor to bring talented, local performers into multiple venues so its community members can enjoy great music,” said Scott Kennebeck, executive director of Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts. “This Series provides concert-goers with an experience of
