Arts & Issues SIUE announces 2009-10 lineup

By JULIA BIGGS Of The Edge SIUE’s Arts & Issues celebrates its 25th anniversary season with another exciting line up of concerts and performances for the 2009-10 season.

The country rock band Poco kicks off the Arts & Issues season on Sept.

26. This is a special performance as it marks the fourth time that this legendary band has performed on campus. The group appeared at the Mississippi River Festival (MRF) in 1975 and 1979 and also played at the MRF pre-season festival in 1972.

This year’s performance coincides with the 40th anniversary of the MRF’s inaugural season and should prove to be a magical, nostalgic filled evening with one of America’s best country rock groups.

One of the greatest voices of contemporary poetry comes to the Meridian Ballroom on October 4 with “An Afternoon with Maya Angelou.” Considered to be a remarkable Renaissance woman, Dr. Maya Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, d r a m a t i s t , p ro d u c e r, a c t re s s , historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. Born in St. Louis,

Angelou comes “home” to spread her legendary wisdom through the sheer beauty of her words and lyrics.

The unique, acoustical music of Autumn’s Child featuring Mark Holland will fill the Meridian Ballroom on Nov. 18. Holland has described the music of Autumn’s Child as Global Chamber Music – a hybrid of world, jazz, classical and folk music. The soothing and sometimes haunting sounds of Autumn’s Child features Holland and his mastery of the native American flute. Autumn’s Child’s performance will include instrumentation of a cello, piano, guitar, percussion, harp and tabla.

Native American hoop dancer Lowery Begay will also perform.

The 2009-10 Arts & Issues season continues into the New Year with the Carpe Diem Quartet & Peter Soave as they perform the Music of Aldemaro Romero on Jan. 30.

Carpe Diem performs a classical repertoire but their music is a collaboration of gypsy, tango, folk, pop, rock, and jazz inspired music.

Their latest disc was selected for the 2009 Grammy Awards Entry List in four categories: Best Classical Album, Best Chamber Music Performance, Best New Artist, and Best Engineered Album-Classical.

Carpe Diem String Quartet performs with Peter Soave, who will amaze the audience with his command of the accordion and bandoneon, a type of accordion used in Latin music.

To g e t h e r C a r p e D i e m a n d Soave will perform music of the late Aldemaro Romero. Aldemaro

Romero was an international recording star and one of the foremost Latin music orchestra leaders in the world. Aldemaro Romero was also the father of SIUE’s new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Aldemaro Romero, Jr., who will conduct several pieces in this concert.

Seating is limited for this performance.

In February, Arts & Issues brings in acclaimed scientist and the principal investigator of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, Steven Squyres, in “Roving Mars: Spirit, Opportunity and the Exploration of the Red Planet.”

Squyres, best known as the face and voice of NASA’s spectacular mission to Mars using two hightech robotic rovers, will detail how he turned what seemed like an improbable dream into a reality.

Malashock Dance takes the stage on April 1 in Dunham Hall.

Through their dynamic, emotionally charged choreography, Malashock Dance’s magnificently trained dancers never cease to amaze with their leaps, lifts, powerful sustained movement and artistry.

Founded by Emmy-winning choreographer John Malashock in 1988 after years of touring with top companies such as Twyla Tharp Dance, this leading California dance company will charm with their intimate, playful pieces that express the intricacies of human relationships. Seating is limited for this performance.

The legendary Count Basie Orchestra takes center stage May 1

for the Arts & Issues series as part of the Annual SIUE Jazz Festival.

This premier jazz band celebrates the big band experience through the completely original and identifiable Count Basie repertoire.

The 2009-10 Arts & Issues season comes to a close on May 15 with UMO Ensemble “Zen Tales” on May 15. In the past 23 years, UMO Ensemble has become known as one of the most innovative, compelling and critically acclaimed performance companies based in the Pacific Northwest.

UMO’s mission is dedicated to “providing awe, challenge and inspiration” to theatre audiences through its compelling art. In Zen Tales, ancient zen and sufi stories as told by UMO monk clowns tackle the question of the existence of time through mask, puppetry, live music and laughter.

People People planner MOBOT to host Japanese Festival Thunderous taiko beats, supersized sumo bouts, meticulouslymanicured bonsai trees, traditional kimono fashions and masterful bunraku puppetry: the sights, sounds and culture of the Far East pervade the Midwest at the annual Japanese Festival, held Labor Day weekend at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis.

Seiwa-en, the “garden of pure, clear harmony and peace” and one of the largest authentic Japanese

Paul Thorn will visit Off Broadway

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Paul Thorn will be performing at Off Broadway, located at 3509 Lemp Ave., in St. Louis, on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

The first thing you notice is “the voice,” unique and distinctive, the voice of a man who has walked a long, hot span over dusty Mississippi country roads. At times soulful, raw, melancholy, brazen, funky, circumspect, serene, brooding, and mutinous, the voice expresses the range of human emotions, from forlorn grimness to incandescent optimism. And after repeated listens, you realize that his is not merely the voice of a poet but also of a merciful prophet, a summation not unjustified. Those who follow the career of Paul Thorn believe he is both.

Thorn’s latest CD is “A Long Way from Tupelo,” a collection of songs which once again illustrates Thorn’s versatility and authentic connection to the music of the Mississippi heartland: blues, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. Thorn excels as a musical storyteller. Maybe, given his background, he just can’t help it. His songs are conduits for that gritty part of the South where beleaguered wisdom is as likely from the bottom of a bottle of Johnny Walker Red as it is from the pulpit of an old country church.

And the latest Paul Thorn CD remains true to form.

Prophets are called and poets are born so it’s no surprise that Paul Thorn is from Tupelo, Mississippi, the same music-drenched region that gave us Elvis. The son of a Pentecostal preacher, Paul grew up shaking his leg and tambourine while singing in his father ’s revivals.

Paul recorded his first CD, “Hammer and Nail,” for A&M records, then recorded “Ain’t Love Strange,” for Miles Copeland’s Ark 21 label. A couple of years later, Thorn switched musical gears and record companies to record the critically acclaimed “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand,” a quirky collection of songs about people on the byways of backwater South. In 2005, Thorn followed up with “Are You With Me,” 12 songs about love gone wrong - and right.

If listening to a Paul Thorn CD is satisfying, then catching a Paul Thorn show is a revelation. He is a superb entertainer fronting a band of musical veterans who know exactly what to do. He weaves his stories throughout; mostly funny ones about himself, people he has known, old girlfriends, and childhood discoveries. And his conversational tones conjure an old buddy sitting in the back of a ’69 Dodge pickup drinking beer on a dark, sultry Mississippi night.

His performance chops are no accident. Thorn is one of the hardest working people in the business and a hardcore veteran of the road.

Before he became the main attraction, Thorn opened for some of the most established acts touring today including Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, Sting, John Hiatt, Robert Cray, Marianne Faithful and John Prine. His tours are heavy and hectic, spanning over 200 dates a year in the United States and Canada.

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Members: Nathan, Adam, Josh, Matt and Craig Shaman’s Harvest hails from Jefferson City, Mo., and travel around the Midwest bring their rock message to their fans.

With the May 1 release of their newest album “Shine” comes the first single “Dragonfly” which has been getting air play all around the country.

Named in the line-up for Pointfest at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, it may not take to long before the bar stage is shoved aside for the arena stage.

The group has been rocking for about a decade and has transgressed from their first album, “Last Call for Goose Creek,” which was touted as “good ol’ Country Rock at its finest,” to their latest release “Shine” which is much more modern rock sound.

A recent critic defined the group’s sound “They definitely have found their sound. Penetrating lyrics, thunderous drums fueled by face melting guitar riffs is sure to drive this machine into the minds of many!”

In addition to providing great live entertainment, festival organizers aim to further raise the profile of St. Louis area as a musical hub, rich with talent and fans. Performing artists will find a broader audience, as well as educational and networking opportunities to increase their career success.

Behind the PLAY:stl Music Festival & Conference is PLAYBACK:stl, the more than seven-year-old, St. Louisbased online music and entertainment magazine founded and run by local husband-and-wife team, Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn. More than just a collection of words, PLAYBACK: stl has long been involved in the music scene, drawing attention to the local music community and independent artists for many years.

“Once again, we are proud to shine a light on St. Louis and its long-standing appreciation for music,” says Hamlett. “In addition to the over 100 local, regional and national bands, we will also have a respectable showing of international bands.” This year ’s headliners will include The Hood Internet, The Antlers, Owen, Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers and more.

The music festival will feature over 100 acts on 10 stages over 3 nights. Venues include Cicero’s, Blueberry Hill (both the Duck and Elvis Rooms), Desmond Lee, Brandt’s, Racanelli’s Cucina, Vintage Vinyl and others. The conference portion will be geared toward musician education and networking, with panels featuring industry professionals discussing such topics as booking and touring, promotion, and the business of music.

“The Time Traveler’s Wife”

So let’s try and get this straight, here. Eric Bana plays a guy named Henry who can travel through time, only he can’t control where or when he goes. He also can’t control how he gets back, except for when he tries certain tricks to place himself in a state of mind to time travel. Even then there’s no way to guarantee which version of Henry will show up: the same one who left or a younger or older version of himself.

The only constant seems to be that when he shows up at his destination, he’s always naked. (Somehow, Henry has found time between all his travels to hit the gym.) Hunky as he is, he’d be a frustrating guy to fall in love with, or even date. But Rachel McAdams’ character, Clare, must be made of stronger stuff than the rest of us, because not only does she tolerate Henry’s pesky inconsistency, she believes he’s her destiny, and that he has been since the first time she saw him as a precocious 6-year-old girl. Director Robert Schwentke’s film, based on the Audrey Niffenegger best-seller, breezes over the fact that Clare and Henry’s meet-cute is more like a meetcreepy. He doesn’t freak her out at all, presumably because she knows, even at this tender age, that she is cosmically meant to be with this much-older man. Maybe it’s more plausible on the written page — or maybe you just have to be a hopeless romantic, and willing to shut off the part of your brain that craves logic, to enjoy this. But strangely, in the script from Bruce Joel Rubin (an Oscar-winner for “Ghost”), the timetravel gimmick supersedes any sort of substance, depth or character development.

“Inglourious Basterds”

If only Quentin Tarantino the director weren’t so completely in love with Quentin Tarantino the writer, this might have been a great movie rather than a good movie with moments of greatness. Everything that’s thrilling and maddening about his films coexists and co-mingles here: the visual dexterity and the interminable dialogue, the homage to cinema and the drive to redefine it, the compelling bursts of energy and the numbingly draggy sections. And then there is the violence, of course: violence as a source of humor, as sport, violence merely because it looks cool on camera, and because the 46year-old Tarantino still has the sensibilities of a 12-year-old boy. “Inglourious Basterds” also reflects the discipline, or lack thereof, of an adolescent — one who’s never been told “no.”

Certain scenes of his wildly revisionist World War II saga have a palpable tension, but then he undermines them by allowing them to go on way too long. As for the plot ... well, it might be in there somewhere amid the many meandering

threads. The film follows a band of Jewish American soldiers, led by twangy Tennessean Lt. Aldo Raine (a hilarious Brad Pitt), who hunt Nazis. Tarantino also intertwines the stories of Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent), who fled to Paris and opened a movie theater after Nazis killed her family; Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), the Nazi colonel who orchestrated that attack; German movie star Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger), who’s an undercover agent for the Brits; and Nazi war hero Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Bruhl), who’s about to become a star by playing himself in a propaganda flick about his exploits.

RATED: R for strong graphic violence, language and brief sexuality.

“Passing Strange The Movie”

It’s easy to see why Spike Lee was drawn to Stew, the onenamed musician and mastermind behind the Broadway production “Passing Strange.” Like Lee, the artist formerly known as Mark Stewart possesses a powerful and singular voice, one he uses to express vividly his own experience of growing up black in America. And Lee has always shown a strong affinity for music in his films, as evidenced by his longtime collaboration with composer and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard. In bringing Stew’s Tony-winning “Passing Strange” to the screen, Lee took the wise and uncharacteristic step of staying out of the way — of letting the songs and the story play out without inserting himself into them. Lee shot two performances at New York’s Belasco Theatre before the show closed, then shot it again without an audience. The result is so crisp and intimate, it makes you feel as if you’re on stage with Stew (who narrates) and the rest of his formidable cast. The semi-autobiographical “Passing Strange” tells the story of a black Los Angeles teenager, known as Youth (Daniel Breaker), who struggles to find his artistic identity in the 1970s.

Among the forces that shape him are his churchgoing mother (Eisa Davis) and the bohemians he meets in Amsterdam and Berlin (De’Adre Aziza, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge and Rebecca Naomi Jones in multiple roles). The coming-of age tale may sound familiar and the self-serious debates about creativity can grow repetitive. But the powerful and catchy rock songs, along with Stew’s humorously pointed observations about race, make “Passing Strange” compelling and moving.

“Post Grad”

This comedy about a driven, hardworking college student who can’t find a job after she graduates actually might have been relevant. It might have been a satirical and insightful

look into how our soured economy has dashed the dreams of a generation. Instead, it’s a flat and tonally jumbled amalgamation of “Adventureland,” ‘’Little Miss Sunshine” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.” In other words, it has no idea what it wants to be, and as a result it gets nothing right. Alexis Bledel maintains a steady level of wide-eyed pluckiness as Ryden Malby (a name that looks like an anagram), who just got out of school and dreams of working at a prestigious Los Angeles publishing house. When she doesn’t get the job she applied for, she ends up back home in the San Fernando Valley with the kind of eccentric family you only find in the movies.

Michael Keaton, as her dad, sells novelty belt buckles; Carol Burnett, as grandma, is obsessed with her own death; and Jane Lynch as her mother plays the straight woman for once, which isn’t a whole lot of fun. Meanwhile, Ryden rebuffs the romantic advances of her best friend, the spineless and worshipful Adam (Zach Gilford), and instead enjoys a fling with her sexy Brazilian neighbor (Rodrigo Santoro), even though — duh — the guy she’s supposed to be with has been right in front of her all along. Animation veteran Vicky Jenson (“Shrek,” ‘’Shark Tale”), directing her first live-action feature from a script by first-timer Kelly Fremon, awkwardly juggles all these subplots.

She also squanders the comic presence of J.K. Simmons, Fred Armisen, Craig Robinson and Demetri Martin in minuscule supporting roles.

RATED: PG-13 for sexual situations and brief strong language.

“Shorts”

Robert Rodriguez mashes up “Shorts,” fast-forwarding, rewinding, pausing and following tangential story lines. But the editing high jinks don’t obscure that this family adventure film is essentially about a group of kids who end up with a “wishing rock,” a rainbow-colored stone that grants the holder any wish. And as tends to happen with such things (be they oil lamps or monkey paws), trouble ensues. Rodriguez populates a Texas suburb with colorfully exaggerated characters, both kids and adults. All get their hands on the wishing rock, but it’s the kids who know how to wish. The parents (highlighted

by James Spader as Mr. Black, a flip corporate tyrant) are filled with worry and tethered to technology. Between stylish, often gruesome films, Rodriguez has made popular kids movies, most notably the “Spy Kids” trilogy. The director (who also, as usual, serves as writer, producer, co-editor, cinematographer and composer) draws heavily from his five children; the idea of “Shorts” was dreamed up by his son, Rebel. A good spirit pervades “Shorts,” but it becomes too cartoonish, too scattered to register much. Somewhere around the time a giant booger runs riot through the town, one wishes for a bit more adult supervision. With William H. Macy, Leslie Mann and Jon Cryer.

Tarantino’s title raises questions

By DAVID GERMAIN Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Quentin Tarantino isn’t saying why he spelled the title of his World War II adventure, “Inglourious Basterds,” the way he did.

The writer-director is enjoying having a little fun with his audience, similar to the way he credited himself and Uma Thurman, with whom he co-wrote the “Kill Bill” movies, by their initials Q and U. “I’m never going to explain that,” Tarantino said during a news conference in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where “Inglourious Basterds” premiered. “When you do an artistic flourish like that, to describe it, to explain it, would just ... invalidate the whole stroke in the first place. “(Artist Jean-Michel) Basquiat takes the letter L from a hotel room door and sticks it in his painting,” he added. “If he describes why he did it, he might as well not have done it at all.”

Tarantino’s film about JewishAmerican soldiers who hunt down and scalp Nazis, which opened Aug. 21 atop the box office with an estimated $37.6 million, is one of several in recent memory with a name that’s tripped people up, either because of its spelling or because it contains a potentially offensive word.

Then there was the content of the posters, which initially were considered too risque because they

suggested a specific sexual act. The Weinstein Co., which also released this movie, later changed them to feature stick figures representing its stars, some of which read: “Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks made a movie so outrageous that we can’t even tell you the title.”

The need to tinker with a tricky title has also arisen lately on television. DirecTV refers to the Oxygen weight-loss series “Dance Your Ass Off” as “Dance Your

A.. Off.” Similarly, the Showtime documentary series featuring comics Penn Jillette and Teller is listed on the satellite guide as “Penn & Teller: Bulls...!” and it appears in other places as “Penn & Teller: BS!” For all the trouble, having a curse word in the title doesn’t necessarily create more buzz for a movie, said publicist Alex Klenert. As an executive at ThinkFilm in 2005, Klenert worked on a documentary

about the origin and many creative uses of the F-word (which was also the title of the film).

As for Tarantino’s unusual spelling, “that’s just the way he is,” says Klenert. “He has such a unique vision, people are more accepting of it because it’s him.”

The tricky phrasing hasn’t seemed to trouble many people on Twitter, where “Inglourious Basterds” was a top trending topic on opening day on Aug. 21.

Another late summer delight

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge “Inglourious Basterds” is an intentionally misspelled title, though I would wager that inglorious (in any form) is a word that rarely makes its way into everyday conversation. The title of Quentin Tarantino’s newest film has nothing to do with the 1978 B-movie from which he purloined it. To be clear, my appreciation of this maverick director ’s work does not mirror that of many of my esteemed colleagues. I regard Pulp Fiction with utter disdain and still don’t understand why Kill Bill needed to be split into two parts. He’s come a long way from his video store roots, though, and “Inglourious Basterds” may be his best work yet.

ROBERT’S RANKING: four stars out of four. classic where they’re going to kill all the Nazi elite by having Jim Brown drop a series of grenades down the ventilation shafts. Expand that out two full hours and there you have this movie. Here, Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt doing a ridiculous hillbilly accent) is assigned to recruit a small unit of Jewish-American soldiers to carryout acts of guerilla warfare that will strike fear into the hearts and minds of the German people. Among those Raine

recruits are “The Bear Jew” (played by Cabin Fever director Eli Roth, the maker of my least favorite films of the last ten years) and “The Little Man” (The Office’s B.J. Novak).

M a n y o f t h e a t ro c i t i e s t h a t R a i n e ’ s ragtag group – known affectionately as The Basterds – commit are the murder and scalping of scores of soldiers, the branding of very few survivors, and specifically heinous dismemberments, mostly at the business end of Roth’s Ted Williams ball bat. The spray of blood and dull thud of splitting skulls is witnessed all the way back in Berlin where Adolf Hitler himself (Martin Wuttke) decides that the propagandist media would be best served by avoiding any mention of these men and their exploits.

The film focuses mainly on one mission in Paris that both romanticizes, idealizes, and accurately portrays the importance of cinema and movie theatres in general. I could hardly be expected

not to approve of such a thing, nor could quirky cinephile Tarantino. Despite his continued over-reliance on such creative crutches as non-linear storytelling and the constant onslaught of interstitial titles, the movie should be considered a career highpoint. Those looking for historical inaccuracy are sure to go away scratching their heads, but those looking to find t a l e n t e d p e r f o r m a n c e s b y f re s h f a c e d actors are in for a real treat. Melanie Laurent is luminescent as Shoshanna, a Jewish teenager who plots an elaborate overthrow of the entire Third Reich when an unbelievable opportunity drops into her lap, but even she is upstaged by the remarkable Christoph Waltz. Waltz is hardly an ingénue, but his work as Col. Hans Landa, “The Jew Hunter,” is going to earn him dividends for years to come.

He was able to portray villainy with the cartoonish brogue that made Heath Ledger ’s Joker so memorably diabolical last year. That’s no small feat.

Get back to nature in Missouri

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Lakes are such great places to spend time as a family. There are a number of activities to do, fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, camping, cookouts, and more. With the busy schedules that everyone seems to have, there isn’t a lot of time to commune with nature.

Why not plan a weekend getaway to Harry S. Truman Lake, located in Warsaw, Mo., about 20 miles south of Sedalia, Mo. off Highway 40.

Truman Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam and reservoir, which was built as a flood control lake, with storage capacity of more than 5 million acre-feet. The drainage basin extends into Kansas and includes Malvern, Pomona, Hillsdale Lakes, Pomme de Terre and Stockton Lakes.

Originally called the Kaysinger Bluff Dam and Reservoir, the project was renamed in 1970 as the Harry S. Truman Dam and Reservoir by Congress, in honor of the former president from Missouri.

Construction of the project actually began in 1964 and the spillway gates were closed

in October 1979. The Truman project helps to protect the lower Osage, Missouri and Mississippi River floodplains.

An abundance of fish and wildlife can be found in an around Truman Lake. The lake is stocked by the Missouri Department of Conservation to supplement the existing fish population. Much of the standing timber was left when the lake was formed to provide quality aquatic habitat.

White-tailed deer, turkey, squirrel, rabbit, quail and waterfowl are favorites of sportsmen.

The lake also provides habitat for wintering bald eagles and breeding pairs which are often present during summer months.

More than 100,000 acres of the project land is allocated for hunting, hiking and horseback riding.

Over night accommodations, services and supplies are available at commercial concessions on the lake and in nearby communities. Park areas offer a variety of recreation facilities such as boat launching ramps, campgrounds, picnic areas and beaches.

Nearby towns offer a number of amenities and shopping for short day trips. The Missouri State Fair runs 11 days in August in Sedalia, less than a 30 minute drive. Also located in Warsaw is the Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site, Daum Mueseum of Contemporary Art, The Ragtime Foundation and Store and the

Sedalia Katy Depot, which is the trailhead for the rails to trails of Katy State Park. For more information or activities visit www. visitsedaliamo.com.

Downtown Warsaw also has shopping, antiques and other greats activities. The Singing Bride, located on Hightway 7 spans the beautiful Osage River. The Ed Elmore Cabin brings to life history that was handed down from generations.

Travel Global retail event: Fashion’s Night Out, Sept. 10 NEW YORK (AP) — Retailers in 13 countries will invite the public to celebrate the world of fashion with the first-ever “Fashion’s Night Out” Sept. 10.

Boutiques and stores will stay open until 11 p.m. for the event, hosting fashion shows, giveaways, charity tie-ins, model and celebrity appearances, parties with food and drink, live music and DJs, makeovers, product launches, and raffles.

The global initiative is designed to promote the retail apparel industry and restore consumer confidence.

It’s being coordinated by U.S. and international editions of Vogue magazine.

In the U.S., 700 retailers in New York City are participating, from boutiques to Macy’s, in addition to the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania, and all 40 Neiman Marcus stores around the country.

Stores in the United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, Russia, France, Brazil, India, Spain, China, Germany, Japan and Taiwan will also take part.

The Sept. 10 date coincides with the first night of New York Fashion Week. In the U.S., Vogue is partnering with New York City, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and NYC & Company, the local tourism and marketing agency.

Some of the splashiest events will take place in Manhattan, with appearances expected by top designers like Manolo Blahnik, Kenneth Cole, Sean Combs, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, Derek Lam, Nanette Lepore, Isaac Mizrahi, Narciso Rodriguez, Diane von Furstenberg, Vera Wang, and Jason Wu among many others.

Celebrities and models taking part are scheduled to include Cindy Crawford, Hugh Jackman, Karolina Kurkova, Sienna Miller, Coco Rocha and Charlize Theron.

The Hilton Alexandria Old Town is asking meeting planners across the U.S. to share their thoughts on how the economy is affecting travel and meeting budgets. Applicants can focus on one of three themes in their entries: how a meeting would stimulate business for their company; how a meeting held at the Hilton would benefit the local Alexandria economy; or, if applicable, a description of the business or organization’s philanthropic commitments.

The winning prize is a two-day meeting or event at the hotel.

Las Vegas tourism to hire a terrorist analyst LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tourism officials in Las Vegas plan to hire a terrorist intelligence analyst in part to assure conventioneers that they will be safer in Las Vegas than if they meet in other cities.

The board of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority approved about $480,000 in funding for the next three years for the position.

The analyst will work under Las Vegas police in the Southern Nevada Counterterrorism Fusion Center.

Officials say they will spend more than $148,000 to fund the job next year, with increases based on merit and cost of living.

Authorities say they know of no specific major terrorism threats uncovered in Las Vegas.

The art, beauty, athleticism and energy of dance comes to life September 26 as Grand Center produces its third annual “Dancing in the Street” festival, presented by Wachovia Securities. Serving as the opening celebration for the District’s fall arts season, this festival will be filled with juried performances and features approximately 50 dance companies with nearly 700 dancers performing a variety of dance styles, including tap, ballet, clog, modern, hip hop, Indian, belly, jazz, salsa, flamenco and much more, on four outdoor stages. In addition to stage presentations, site-specific dances will add to the excitement throughout the district. “Dancing in the Street,” a free event, will enliven Grand Center from 1 to 9 p.m.

This year ’s festival promises to keep the crowd, as well as the dancers, on their toes. A surprise performance will erupt in front of the Fox Theatre on Grand Boulevard at 3:20 and 6:20 p.m. with audience participation encouraged. Everyone is quite secretive about it. Even rehearsals are taking place at an undisclosed location.

“In addition to all the great local and regional dance companies that participate, in previous years we also featured one major headline act. This year, we have designed the program to showcase not just one but several innovative performers and creative performances,” said Kelly Weber, Director of Events, Theatres and Marketing at Grand Center.

New groups featured as this year’s headliners include: • Coming from Chicago and a strong gymnastics and ballet background, the husband and wife team Duo Adamo will showcase their unique aerial strap act combining strength, beauty and athleticism. This amazing show will be performed all while suspended in the air in Strauss Park.

• “Crutch Master” Bill Shannon uses his dependence on crutches to create awe-inspiring dance routines.

He will perform throughout the day and amongst the crowd with high-energy hip-hop dances that include popular break dancing and skateboarding moves all on crutches.

In addition, a stage performance is planned for 5:30 p.m.

• Dance instructions will be offered throughout the festival, including the exciting Bollywood dance to the Oscar-winning Hindi song “Jai Ho” made popular in the closing scene of Slumdog Millionaire.

• Acro Yoga Fusion will be demonstrated on the grassy corner of Olive and Grand - this unique form of yoga unites acrobatic

concepts with a yogic consciousness.

Incorporating aesthetics from various dance forms (break and street dance, modern, jazz, ballet, improvisation and mask-work) gave birth to this combination of Acro Yoga and dance aesthetics.

“When immersed among dance performances people make a stronger connection with the magic of dance,” said Weber. “Therefore, we like the idea of bringing our ‘special event’ performances off the stages and in and among the streetscape and the people. After all, we are ‘Dancing in the Street.’”

Throughout the day, there will be four stages of varied and ongoing dance that appeals to all ages: • The Fox Tap Stage located on Olive between Grand and Spring will feature 15 local troupes with approximately 300 dancers and is being produced by Pat Vogelsang and directed by Gerri Stretz and Yvonne Meyer of The Professional Dance Center. The performing troupes include Ames VPA Top Hats, Leaping Lizards – Diva La Tap, Patzius Performing Arts, Professional Dance Center and the St. Louis Strutters.

Grand Center ’s galleries and museums will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. and the 3600 block of Grandel Square will showcase 21 expert workshops and 65 exhibits offering sustainable ideas, products and services during the Earthways Green Homes Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A REAL family event Greenville will host Our Common Ground ArtWalk

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Many events claim to be a family event, but once you arrive, you realize that it is either mainly kid oriented and the adults are left to watch the kids bounce around in some inflatable apparatus or it is really an adult event, where too many adult beverages flow and the kids are begging to go home. The annual Our Common Ground ArtWalk in Greenville will definitely fill the bill for being a real family event.

The fifth annual ArtWalk is slated for Friday, Sept. 25, from 5 p.m. to midnight. The event takes place around the historic Greenville Square, in Greenville.

The Highlights of this event include: A silent auction of memorbilia donated by Bond County native, Gretchen Wilson. At press time for this article, Ms. Wilson had donated a handwritten and autographed copy of her

hit “Redneck Woman,” to be auctioned.

Also, in this same venue, the work of Bond County Ex-Pats will be on display. Artists such as Kieth Buccholz, who has studied under Yoko Ono, and will be exhibiting work from his time spent with her.

Greenville native Mary Radcliff Harnetiaux will display her latest work, along with 13 other artists who grew up in Greenville and moved to other places.

Jennifer Angus will be showing in the Rowland Art Gallery in the Maves Art Center of Greenville College. Angus is an artist, educator, writer and curator living in Madison, Wisc. She has exhibited her work internationally and has been the recipient of numerous awards including Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council grants. Three of her pieces are in the permanent collection of the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand. Organizers are most proud to bring her work, an installation that will be created just for Greenville, to the ArtWalk.

Adam Long, of St. Charles, Mo. will be exhibiting his sculptures at the Kaskaskia College building. Long’s environmental art often takes the form of figure sculptures taken from natural and recycled materials. His work often carries a political or social message.

On Second Street and Main, there will be a wine tasting.

Culinary treats will be provided

by Kevin Willman of Erato in Edwardsville and by chefs from the Firefly Grill in Effingham.

Music will be provided by Stephanie Plant, Photoside Cafe and Fundamental Elements.

Local quilters will display “their favorite quilts”.

Crafting demonstrations will be conducted in the Bradford Community Room. Mississippi Mud will provide pottery demonstrations at the wheel, the YaYa Textile Group will provide weaving demonstations, Mark

Meyer will show how to tat, and Laura Ewald will show how to make marionettes – bringing a collection of marionettes she has designed.

The Our Common Ground Theater Troupe will perform spontaneously throughout the evening, in unexpected places.

Clownvis Presley, from St. Louis, will be roaming the walk, imitating Elvis, and performing magic.

The Bock Museum will be open for tours.

If you want to come a day ahead of the walk, a student film festival will be going on at the Globe Theater on Thursday, Sept.

24, at 7 p.m.

Something new in St. Louis

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge What’s old is new again with the $63 million renovation that took place at what was the Adam’s Mark Hotel and is now the 910 room Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront Hotel.

The luxurious new Hyatt Regency is nestled at the foot of the famous Gateway Arch and alongside the picturesque St. Louis riverfront. A centerpiece for the bustling downtown St. Louis area, convenient to Busch Stadium and the Edward Jones Dome and many other downtown attractions.

The hotel renovation would not have been complete without the addition of three fantastic

restaurants: RED Kitchen and Bar, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and Brewhouse and Starbucks.

RED Kitchen and Bar has a sleek, classic design and is located in the back of the lobby of the Hyatt. The “wall-less” design allows groups of patrons to casually converse while enjoying the fabulous specialty cocktails and small plate fare that makes RED something unique.

Although the dining setting is great for a group happy hour, there are plenty of cozy places to dine with a friend in a more intimate setting.

Chef Reden Ramos is the executive chef at RED and has created a menu that will allow the diner to enjoy a number of his creations by serving in “small plate” selections. “I wanted people to be able to order a couple of small plate selections and maybe share with another person or a couple of people so that they can get a number of different flavors when they dine here,” said Chef Ramos.

The small plate selections consist of jumbo shrimp, braised short ribs, tempura prawns, butter steamed clams, tomato and arugula salad, seared scallops, crab rangoon, risotto cakes, spice crusted tuna, roasted beet salad, bacon barbecue shrimp, beef tenderloin skewers, crab cakes, ahi poki wonton, pomegranate-molasses lamb, pork meatball, cheese board, red cajun chicken wings, fried brie,American kobe beef sliders, salt and pepper calamari.

Their menu features fantastic pizza creations that Chef Ramos designed. The flavors consist of barbecue chicken, cheese, prosciutto, shrimp and meatball.

RED specialties include chicken noodle soup with matzo ball, chicken tortilla soup, peppered hangar steak served with fries and green salad, salmon with artichoke and tomato broth, pot pie with chicken, basil and peas, fried chicken with roasted potato,

corn and bibb salad, seared snapper with vegetable stew, grilled chicken orriechette with portabella mushroom, sundried tomato, asparagus and light basil sauce, grilled pork chops with apple slaw, whole wheat penne with turkey sausage, garlic, tomato and fresh mozzarella, cobb salad and an eight ounce angus burger.

There is also a lunch menu with a few of the same selections listed above and additions that include some sandwiches and other quicker fare.

Don’t forget to leave room for dessert. The surprise features will be irresistible and well worth the try.

Red Apple Maryville 4 stars The Red Apple is another favorite of our family, whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is a huge menu selection, including Italian, Broasted chicken, gyros, sandwiches of all kinds, plate specials, fish selections-fried and broiled, and much more. Service is always impeccable and prices can't be beat.

54th Street Bar and Grill Edwardsville 4 stars Great menu selection, something for everyone. Prices are very reasonable and have not had a bad selection yet. Remember to get your frequent diner card stamped when ordering an entree so you can get one free when your card is full.

La Fonda Edwardsville 3 1/2 stars Good food, good service. All you can eat chips and salsa are are great complement to their abundant menu. Their rice and beans are excellent also.

Red Robin Edwardsville 2 1/2 stars The bottomless french fries are fantastic, but it basically is a pricey burger place. Service is not super speedy, but food was good and hot.

Dining Delights You can't top tapas when it comes party time

By MARY CLARE JALONICK Associated Press Are your big dinner party plans clashing with your small budget?

Consider keeping your plates small, too.

S p a n i s h - s t y l e t a p a s a re b y definition budget-friendly, since they are small plates of food traditionally served at bars. Most can be prepared quickly and using inexpensive ingredients, allowing you to serve a varied and flavorful menu while keeping costs down.

And you don't need to be limited to Spanish cuisine. Most Mediterranean cultures have their own versions of tapas, such as Italian bruschetta and crostini and Greek meze.

SPANISH TAPAS Seasonal fruits and vegetables are key to Jose Andres' budget tapas menu. The Washington chef, cookbook author and owner of several award-winning tapas restaurants says produce keeps flavors fresh and costs down.

He suggests skewers of tomatotopped watermelon drizzled with dressing, as well as a fruity summer sangria. He also says budget cooking can be a state of mind. You don't have to leave the table full every time, as is common in this country, he believes.

"It's OK to leave hungry," he says.

STEAK FOR LESS Small plates also are a good way to stretch pricier proteins, such as steak, pork tenderloin, salmon or crab cakes, says Tina Ujlaki, executive food editor of Food & Wine magazine.

"Even if you are on a budget, it's a great way to still be able to offer a bit of luxury," she says.

You can even serve meatballs or small meat medallions as "sliders."

Try: • Seared pork tenderloin with a mustard-fruit glaze, thinly sliced and accompanied by a cooked plum puree.

• Slices of smoked salmon with a salsa made of finely diced cucumbers, pickled onions and capers.

• Three-bite crab cakes with a four-vegetable slaw, using your favorite seasonal vegetables finely shre d d e d o r c h o p p e d . U j l a k i suggests broccoli stems, red and green cabbage, and carrots, for example, for a mix of colors.

BUFFET OF BRUSCHETTA Using bread, potatoes or pasta as the base ingredients for your menu is another good way to offer plenty of food without spending a lot, says Lucinda Scala Quinn, executive food director at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

She suggests a bruschetta menu, served on platters or boards lined with parchment paper. These are easily prepared beforehand — or guests can prepare their own — so the host or hostess can enjoy the

She suggests toasting or grilling slices of a rustic bread, rubbing them with garlic and topping them with a variety of flavors and textures, such as: • A basic homemade pesto and a seasonal vegetable, such as roasted red peppers, peeled and marinated in olive oil and garlic.

• Shredded zucchini with lemon, basil, a drizzle of olive oil and crumbled or grated cheese.

• Shredded kale that has been quickly sauteed in olive oil and sprinkled with toasted almonds.

MEXICAN SIMPLICITY In her book "Fresh Mexico," Marcela Valladolid has several suggestions for simple foods that are crowd pleasers. "I would opt for cheaper selections of protein," she says of entertaining on a budget.

She suggests: • Chicken drummettes brushed with a glaze of honey, vinegar, butter, Worcestershire sauce, ground ancho chilies and garlic powder. Just brush the drummettes with the glaze and bake for 25 minutes.

• Deviled eggs "are the first thing that disappear off the table,"
