Giving the gift of friendship

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge For as long as Matt Guenther can remember he’s been a Dallas Cowboys fanatic.

He also can’t remember a time when he didn’t follow the Florida Gators.

So in 1990 when the Cowboys grabbed Gator running back Emmitt Smith with the 17th overall pick in the NFL Draft, it was a no-brainer for Guenther to become a fan of Smith.

“Looking back at old photos I always have a Cowboys shirt on,” said Guenther of Collinsville, who will be 41 this month.

“Same scenario, I don’t know how I became a Gators fan. But I always was, so when Emmitt was drafted in ‘90 to become a Cowboy it was like heaven. This running back setting all these college records was now drafted to my team, so it was an instant love there.”

That love shifted into a passion for collecting sports memorabilia. He centered his collection around the Cowboys, preferably Smith.

“Anything Cowboys, I was looking for it,” Guenther said. “My goal was to have 22 (Smith’s jersey number with the Cowboys) of every rookie card, so I set that goal and started trying to achieve that and back then it was pretty tough.”

Unbeknownst to Guenther at that time, his interest in Smith and his collecting would offer him an awesome opportunity.

With the invention of the Internet the world of sports collecting opened many new doors for Guenther, including finding a little shop in Pensacola, Fla., the hometown of Smith.

Guenther quickly learned the store was owned and operated by Smith’s family.

“I dealt primarily with his sister Marsha at the beginning and then after awhile I was trading online with his dad,” Guenther said.

“It turned into autographed mini helmets and pictures and he broke this record, so I’d get a commemorative autographed football.

Finally I had everything that was to be had. It was difficult for even friends and family to find things unique. It came to the point where I was telling Marsha, ‘Hey, how about an autographed Gators jersey.’

And she’d say, ‘Well we don’t have those.’

And I’d say, ‘Well I want one, so can you get me one?’ It came to the point where they were actually coming up with items to kind of pacify me.”

Some time had passed since his dealings with the Smith family when Guenther noticed some odd Smith items popping up on eBay in 1996.

“One day I saw some stuff popping up that really caught my attention,” he said. “It was an Emmitt Smith high school yearbook, an Emmitt Smith letter from his pastor, so I bid on a couple items and I ended up winning one and it came to the house and as far as I could tell it was the real deal.

Finally I kept an eye on this seller and he started listing more and more and finally I sent him an email saying, ‘Can I talk to you about these items?’”

Guenther discovered the seller was getting rid of the items for a friend who owned a storage unit in Florida and it was all legit. The storage unit owner attempted to contact the Smith family, but they

Guenther said, “send me a list” and ended up purchasing the majority of what was remaining. “ I h a d e v e r y t h i n g f ro m h i s e i g h t h grade prom picture to photos of him at the log ride at Disney Land, letters from his pastor, letters from the University of Florida, pee wee/Pop Warner type pictures, Burger King Player of the Week certificates and newspaper clippings from Escambia (Smith’s high school in Pensacola),” Guenther said. “His brother Emory played college ball for Clemson and played in one bowl game and I had his entire bowl uniform. It went on and on and on, tons of photos, all personal stuff and at that point I’m thinking why wouldn’t the family want this stuff back?”

That’s when Guenther went on a mission, attempting to get face to face with Smith to tell him what he’d purchased.

“In an effort to get him to notice me I had a high school jersey made,” said Guenther.

“It was made in Edwardsville at the Gym Bag, which is no longer there. I took in a picture of him in his high school jersey and said, ‘Make me that.’ I wanted to have the only one so it would stand out and he would notice it and it didn’t work.

“I bought front row tickets to preseason games thinking, ‘Let me just get in front of this guy and be able to talk to him a minute to let him know what I have. I tried probably for two years and then the Cowboys came to play the Rams in ‘99 and I got a chance to get close to Emmitt at the

Marriott. My ex-wife was the director of marketing for the Marriott and the GM said I could help check the team in, but no autographs or disturbing anybody. I got close but never got an opportunity to talk to him. I’m not going to infringe on anybody’s personal time. I tried my best and I figured there’d be another opportunity and it came in 2002.”

Smith returned to St. Louis with the Cowboys in ‘02 and Guenther and his wife at the time were able to score a room next to Smith’s parents at the Sheraton, where his ex was now the marketing director.

Staking out in the lobby with his trusted replica prep jersey on, Guenther got his chance when Smith’s wife Pat showed up.

“My ex-wife approaches her and introduces herself as the manager and Pat notices me and says, ‘Does that guy have on Emmitt’s high school jersey?’” Guenther said. “My ex-wife says, ‘Yeah that’s my husband and he’s kind of a crazy fan. Let me introduce you.’”

Guenther was cordial when meeting Pat and almost let the great opportunity to meet his hero slip through his fingers.

“I said, ‘It’s nice to meet you. I’ll let you get back to your family.’ Again not wanting to be intrusive,” said Guenther. “My ex says, ‘I can’t believe you’re not going to take this opportunity to tell her about the stuff you have.’ And Pat says, ‘What stuff?’

My ex says, ‘He has a box of stuff from some storage unit in Florida.’ Pat said, ‘You have that stuff? Hang on.’ She pulled her cell phone out, dialed and said, ‘Baby,

there’s a guy sitting here that has on your high school football jersey and he says he has all the stuff from the storage unit in Florida.’ She hung up the phone and said, ‘He needs to speak to you as soon as he gets here.’”

Guenther was bursting at the seams. He could hardly contain himself since Smith didn’t arrive in St. Louis until the following day.

He raced back to the hotel the next day, but was unable to corral Smith for a meeting when Pat walked in and noticed him. She extended an invitation to dinner with the Smith family that night and Guenther excitedly accepted.

He went home, made sure he collected all the personal items in a single duffle bag and headed for his rendezvous.

“I walk in and I’m wearing the high school jersey,” said Guenther. “The first thing Emmitt says is, ‘I saw that jersey, front row, Denver, preseason game last year.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’ve been trying to get your attention for six years.’”

Smith started rummaging through the bag and Guenther could see the memories pouring out through Smith’s expressions.

Finally the moment came. How much money would Guenther want to return the items?

That’s why the family lost the stuff in the first place. They left it behind in the storage unit and by the time they realized it, the owner asked for extortionist prices to return it.

People Friends Continued from Page 3 “He slides the bag back across the table and says, ‘It’s all legit,’” said Guenther. “He says, ‘That’s a nice collection you have.’ I slid the bag back across and said, ‘That’s your stuff.’ He said, ‘Let’s have something to eat and then we’ll talk about money.’ And I said, ‘I don’t want your money. Your money doesn’t mean anything to me.’ The whole room just stopped and was like, ‘What did that guy just say?’ I told him, ‘You’re going to be the all-time leading rusher. What other fan can say they did this. It’s enough for me just to say I gave all that back to you. You’ve given me every Sunday for the past 10 years.’

And he said, ‘Well, let’s just eat and we’ll talk about stuff later.’”

They ate dinner and then Guenther showed Smith a file he’d put on his laptop, copying all the photos to prove he’d had them.

Smith peeked across Guenther’s right shoulder at the pictures as the player and the fan had their special moment together.

Smith then signed a bunch of stuff for Guenther, including the high school jersey, before he left.

“Finally I said, ‘This is your time with your family, let me get out of here,’” Guenther said. “And he said, ‘I want you to wear that jersey and when I see you at a game or whatever, then I can acknowledge you. I’ll be looking for you.’”

The next day at the Rams/Cowboys game Smith acknowledged Guenther and then a few weeks later he received a call from Smith’s assistant, Marge Irwin.

Smith was on the verge of breaking Walter Payton’s rushing record and becoming the all-time leading rusher in NFL history. Irwin told Guenther there were tickets waiting for him in Dallas for the game Smith was projected to surpass Payton — and they were sitting with Smith’s family. Guenther jumped on the opportunity.

He met Emory Smith when he arrived, who promptly thanked him for returning his college jersey, but Guenther remained reserved around the family.

“I was still kind of distant, didn’t want to be intrusive, so we took some pictures and then they were all going to get in this prayer circle,” he said.

“All the family and friends are leaning in and I kind of moved away and his mom looked up and said, ‘Boy, you better get in this.’ So I got in the prayer circle with them, which was cool.”

Smith broke the record that day and went on to rush for a whopping 18,355 yards in his career.

Guenther got a chance to see him outside his hotel in Dallas later that day, as Smith saw him and drove up to him in his car with NFL Films riding along, taping Smith’s record day.

“I’ve been trying to get that footage forever,” he said.

He ran into Smith again when he came to play the Rams with the Arizona Cardinals later in his career, but it’s mainly been through Irwin that

With Smith retired from the NFL now and out of the limelight, their contact has waned, but this year offered an opportunity for Guenther to see his hero win the ultimate reward for his outstanding career.

On Aug. 7 Smith was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and Guenther made sure he was there.

Irwin told Guenther she would try to get him tickets, but with limited space and the amount of requests she couldn’t promise anything. Guenther graciously declined and bought his own.

“There really wasn’t a whole lot of contact at the Hall,” said Guenther.

“When we were at the Gold Jacket Ceremony I had gotten his attention and it was formal, so I was in a tuxedo and he looked over (smiled and jerked on his tie), but that was about the extent of the acknowledgment or the amount of time I really got to talk to him, other than in the line at the autograph session where it was a madhouse.”

Guenther came across one more high school picture of Smith and gave it to him in Canton, which he cordially accepted. “ T h e a t m o s p h e re w a s j u s t amazing,” Guenther said of the Hall of Fame. “The people were everywhere.

It was just electric.”

He sat among current and former Cowboys during the induction ceremony and shook hands with some all-time greats, but none were greater than when he got to meet his hero.

“Just in the short time I got exposure to him as a person validated that I’d rooted for this guy all this time,” he said. “That was my biggest fear, to meet somebody I’d idolized

for all these years and him to turn out to be a jerk. That would have been devastating.”

Guenther said he’ll keep in contact with Irwin and try and see Smith periodically when the opportunity arises, but he’ll never be intrusive.

Oh — and completing his goal of 22 of each of Smith’s rookie cards — mission accomplished. He doesn’t think he’ll ever collect so vigorously

with any other player though.

“Probably not,” said Guenther.

“I have players I absolutely root for now, but to the extent of an Emmitt Smith? No. I think the planets were aligned. This Gator, one of my favorite teams, went to become a Cowboy, my favorite pro team. Jason Witten, I think is going to be one of the best tight ends, but I don’t want 82 of his rookie cards.”

People People planner Jersey County Victorian Festival planned The Jersey County Victorian Festival is a living history event that will feature our Civil War and Agricultural History during this Labor Day Weekend, September 4, 5 and 6. The Civil War segment will begin with Mrs. Lincoln narrating a Civil War era style show explaining what was proper during this period of time and what was not. President and Mrs. Lincoln will present an educational narrative of the events leading up to the Civil War and the Battle at Gettysburg followed by the President’s Gettysburg Address. During the event, visitors can tour Confederate and Union camps, visit with reenactors and view how meals are prepared over an open fire.

The “North Meets the South” when reenactors

participate in the daily battle that includes cavalry, artillery and infantry. The reality of war sets in when viewing the embalming demonstrations that are given to enhance an understanding of ritual practices during the Civil War. A year after the Civil War ended, Confederate Officer Col. William H. Fulkerson and his wife, Cornelia T. (Russell) Fulkerson settled on land near Jerseyville and built the 1866 Fulkerson Mansion on the farm they named “Hazel Dell.” The mansion will be open for tours and is rich in Civil War history and beautifully furnished with rare antiques of the period including a special display of the Colonel’s Civil War personal items and the work of artist Charles M. Russell, a nephew of the Fulkerson’s who considered the farm his boyhood home. Visitors will also enjoy a tasteful display of Civil War and Western

era “Women of ILL-Repute,” and a special room dedicated to the Civil War featuring the Lincoln Anvil and original artifacts.

The agricultural segment of the Festival also promotes living history through agricultural demonstrations, taking a step back in time to view our history and to give visitors an opportunity to get closer to our past. Plowing with steam engines and antique tractors using antique plows will exhibit a much earlier time of farming. This year’s Festival will feature John Deere.

The Festival will have a variety of working artisans on site during the Festival, many of which have been recognized in Early American Life in the “Directory of Traditional American Crafts,” including Historic Pewter and pottery, Victorian horse carving, fanbird carving, silk ribbon embroidery, coopering wooden buckets, quilting, soap-making, needlework, basket

making, rope making, sgraffito decoration of redware pottery, musical and rhythm instruments of the period, broom making, blacksmithing and a Colonial Gunsmith, all offering one of a kind items for sale. Antiques, collectibles and many other unique items will be available to purchase as well as a variety of items for sale from Civil War Sutlers that include Civil War era clothing, tintypes, camp supplies and more.

“Swing, Sail and Support” SIUE Friends of Music planning Jazz Cruise

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge The Southern Illinois Friends of Music has created a fantastic way for Jazz lovers to enjoy some great music and food while cruising the mighty Mississippi and still giving back to the community.

So “Swing, Sail and Support“ Southern Illinois University Edwardsville music students at the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Friends of Music annual jazz gala. The Jazz Cruise will be aboard the Gateway Arch Riverboat, located on the Mississippi, at the base of the Arch.

The Gateway Arch Riverboat is a 19th century replica steamboat that combines the charm of the 1800s with modern conveniences of today.

The St. Louis Directory describes the riverboat: “Step back in time and enjoy this turn of the century designed boat while enjoying indoor and outdoor seating and a view like no other.”

While cruising along the Mississippi and enjoying some fantastic dining, listen to the sounds of the SIUE Jazz Ensemble and take in the colors of autumn on Sunday, October 3. The SIUE Jazz Ensemble is an amazing group of talented musicians that will be providing a night of Jazz music that can’t be heard anywhere else. What a

great setting for a night of fun, dining and enjoyment while giving to a much needed and appreciated cause.

The dining experience includes a choice of entrees: Roast Prime Rib of Beef, Chicken Breast with Apple Almond Stuffing or Manicotti stuffed with Ricotta Cheese. There is also a c h i l d re n ’ s m e n u t o c h o o s e f ro m : C h i c k e n S t r i p s o r M a c a ro n i a n d Cheese.

Band Bio: Butterfly Distortion

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Butterfly Distortion is an all original rock band made up of area musicians from Alton, Edwardsville and Bethalto. They were recently chosen to play the “Live Loud and Local” Festival in St. Louis at Fubar, the weekend of August 27 to 29. The festival is a three-day event with 40 bands that travel to several cities this summer to increase awareness of original, local music.

Butterfly Distortion (formerly known as Lost Conscience) is an American band formed in 2008 in Bethalto. The band consists of Wynnsorforce(lead vocals and guitars), Gary D. (rhythm and lead guitar), Chuck (bass guitar and backing vocalist) and CP (drums and percussion). The band was created when band member Gary D. could not find the right fit in an already existing band and decided to enlist the help of Chuck Butterfly to form their own band.

Soon after a vocalist was found and Jon D’oh came on board as a

drummer to help the band through s o m e o f i t s re h e a r s a l s w h i l e remaining in his current band, Relative Chaos. Jon D’oh quickly became the permanent drummer, but the vocalist wasn’t quite the right fit. Some months later, it was discovered that Wynnsorforce (previous bass player and backing vocalist for the band Noxious Fumes) was available. Wynnsorforce joined in early 2009 solidifying the group. Shortly after the name was changed to Butterfly Distortion.

In early March of 2010, Jon D’oh announced he was leaving the band. CP, who was a local drummer, quickly filled the position, Butterfly Distortion performs all original music in a straight-forward rock and roll style.

The name of the band implies that they write heart-felt, meaningful songs that meld with catchy riffs with an old school approach that are sure to get your foot tapping and your head banging.

Saint Louis RME revives outdoor Symphony brings Copacabana to life concert series The River Music Experience (RME) is thrilled to announce the revival of its outdoor music series, Friday Live at 5! Now featuring free admission for adults and kids, Friday Live at 5 w i l l h o s t l o c a l a n d re g i o n a l music every Friday beginning June 18 through September 24 outside on the RME’s courtyard, which is next to the Skybridge.

Friday Live at 5 will give residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the downtown atmosphere with live music outdoors, immediately after the busy work week ends.

The RME is also proud to provide an opportunity for local and regional acts to gain e x p o s u re t o a w i d e r a u d i e n c e in the Quad-Cities via this free program. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and music will start shortly continuing until 7:30 p.m.

“The Other Guys”

If the mismatched-buddy cop movie seems egregiously overdone, the idea of a parody of that genre would seem especially needless — which is what makes this such a wonderful surprise. On paper, this could have been painfully lame. Will Ferrell is doing a variation on his tried-and-true film persona: the overly earnest guy who’s totally confident and oblivious to his buffoonery. Mark Wahlberg, meanwhile, is playing with his screen image as a tough guy and a hothead, doing a version of his Oscar-nominated role in “The Departed.”

It all could have been too familiar, too cute. But there are just enough tweaks to these characters and this formula — and a refreshingly weird, kinky streak throughout — that make “The Other Guys” an unexpected kick. Director and co-writer Adam McKay’s film runs out of steam in the third act and probably could have been tightened a bit. And we didn’t need the Powerpoint-style presentation over the closing credits preaching to us about corporate greed. But the majority of it works. A big reason for the film’s success is that the action sequences are played totally straight. The comedy similarly has a deadpan tone; it’s self-aware but not tongue-in-cheek.

RATED: PG-13 for crude and sexual content, language, violence and some drug material.

RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes.

“Animal Kingdom”

We know we’re in for a different kind of family values right off the top, as we watch a teenager sitting next to his passed-out mother on the couch while some inane game show blares on the television in the background. It’s only when the paramedics arrive at their shabby apartment that we realize she’s dead from a heroin overdose, and yet the boy’s expression remains stoic throughout. This development will force Joshua “J” Cody (James Frecheville) into a life with the relatives he never really knew — relatives his mother tried to keep him away from because they were even more screwed up than she was. Now, this 17-year-old must find his place among them, even though he’s clearly in over his head from the start. Watching this small-time Melbourne crime family unravel under the weight of their overconfidence is riveting, as Australian writer-director David Michod takes his time methodically detailing their self-destruction. The combination of steady pacing, intimate cinematography and startling performances will leave you feeling tense throughout “Animal Kingdom” and probably for a while afterward. It’s

such a stripped-down, assured little thriller, you’d never know it was Michod’s feature debut. Guy Pearce, Jacki Weaver and Ben Mendelsohn are among the excellent cast.

“Eat Pray Love”

This does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. It’s overlong and it wraps up with the kind of romantic comedy cliches that, for the most part, were absent from the first two-thirds. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, though, it’ll make you want to head out for wine and pasta with your girlfriends afterward. Javier Bardem, Billy Crudup and James Franco star as the various loves of her life.

RATED: PG-13 for brief strong language, some sexual references and male rear nudity.

“The Expendables”

An exercise in nostalgia for the bygone era of muscly, macho action films, “The Expendables” is willfully out of date, like an aged hair band that can’t pack away the spandex. Sylvester Stallone, the director, co-writer and star, has summoned a who’s who of the remaining defenders of high body count, testosterone-fueled action: Jason Statham, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Dolph Lundgren, who collectively make up a band of beefy, tattooed mercenaries.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis make cameos, too: It’s a reunion. Mickey Rourke comes along as a grizzled former warrior. The crew is hired to overthrow a corrupt general (David Zayas) and a villainous, rogue CIA agent (Eric Roberts) on the fictional island of Vilena. But the world of “The Expendables” has shockingly little connection to anything like the real world, and the military compound that will be the setting for much of the film could be that from any “Rambo” movie: cargo boxes, sand bags and watch towers, all ripe for explosions. The film is a time warp to a time before irony, to a low production value movieland where it’s still OK to fade to a close-up of a full moon. But it’s exactly the movie Stallone wanted to make; he loves this stuff.

RATED: R for strong action and bloody violence throughout, and for some language.

RUNNING TIME: 103 minutes.

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”

It’ll sound like blasphemy — especially to the film’s target audience — but here goes: This is way more involving when it focuses on actual people and the palpable angst of young love rather than the video game-style duels to the death in which the title character finds himself. Director and co-writer Edgar Wright certainly creates an infectious energy in bringing Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels to the screen, with wonderfully weird little details sprinkled throughout. No surprise there, given Wright’s previous films — the excellent “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz” — which reveled in the deliriously absurd elements of everyday life. But it’s those kinds of relatable factors — and some lively performances from an appealing, eclectic cast — that make the movie work. The video game flourishes grab you the first couple times. Often the action is split in a way that suggests the panels of a comic book coming to life, or words like “Ding Dong!” and “Blam!” appear on screen. These devices grow repetitive and tiresome, though, especially once you realize Scott really is going to have to fight every one of his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes. Michael Cera stars as the 22-year-old Toronto nerd who’s smitten upon the sight of the mysterious Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

RATED: PG-13 for stylized violence, sexual content, language and drug references.

Movies “Eat Pray Love” will satisfy fans

By CHRISTY LEMIRE Associated Press “Eat Pray Love” does exactly what it should to satisfy its core audience: It provides a gorgeous escape, exquisitely photographed and full of female wish fulfillment. Yet it also offers sufficient emotional heft and self-discovery to make you feel as if you’ve actually learned something and, perhaps, emerged a better person solely through osmosis.

It’s easy to see why author Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir became an international phenomenon, even without help from Oprah. Everyone’s looking for something — for answers, for their true and higher purpose — and Gilbert had the fortitude (and the wherewithal) to take off alone on a journey around the world to find herself after her divorce.

Having Julia Roberts star as Liz Gilbert in the film version of the best-seller, in theory, only makes it more appealing to an even wider audience. Roberts is radiant as ever, and director and co-writer Ryan Murphy’s adaptation allows her to show off her full range with plenty of hardcore hanky moments. Not unlike the production numbers in Murphy’s juggernaut TV series “Glee,” the search for meaning in “Eat Pray Love” is played with complete earnestness. But even cynics viewing this movie (or the vast majority of men) would find it hard not to be impressed by the lush visuals and, on a more substantive level, moved by some of the performances.

In the India section of the story, Richard Jenkins pretty much steals “Eat Pray Love” away from Roberts as the hippie Texan who serves as the voice of reason when Liz is feeling lonely and sorry for herself. She accuses him of talking in bumper stickers — which the script

Jenkins is such an intelligent, honest actor, he makes every moment feel authentic. He kind of makes you want to see a movie about his character instead.

But “Eat Pray Love” is the story of how Liz, a successful author,

leaves her husband (Billy Crudup) when she realizes she no longer wants to be married to him, then leaves her much-younger boyfriend (James Franco) when she realizes she’s losing her identity to him, then leaves New York entirely.

Her first stop is Italy, a place she’s always wanted to visit, where she immediately falls in love with the people, the sights, the language. This would be the “eat” portion of our

adventure, and the scene in which Liz takes on a plate of spaghetti plays like food porn. She lovingly twirls the noodles around her fork then lifts them into that perfect mouth, slurping and sucking the pasta in with delight. Warning: Do NOT see this movie hungry. The Thanksgiving turkey she shares for breakfast with the locals and ex-pats who become her makeshift family is a nice touch, but it also looks

seriously delicious.

Next, she’s off to pray at an ashram outside New Delhi, which she finds is harder than she’d expected — the whole process of keeping the mind still, and all. This is where Jenkins’ character, Richard from Texas, comes into play. But Liz also befriends a 17-year-old girl on the verge of an arranged marriage and that relationship provides its own poignant moments.

“Middle Men” likely to be overlooked

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge I don’t know about you, but I had a great week at the movies. Despite the many strong rumors that this is one of the worst summers on record, I found the time to see two great films (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” blew me away). I’ll stay on topic, though, and refrain from mentioning by name the one dud I did take in (I’m looking at you, Sylvester Stallone).

“Middle Men” was the other one I saw. I enjoyed it immensely, despite both going in and coming out of the auditorium with a sleazy feeling about its very adult subject matter.

“Middle Men” is clear that it is not a biopic and is only modeled on real events. The names of all of the characters have been changed, many others were composites or new creations, and a lot of the more gonzo elements of the movie are fictitious additions to a story that would have been stunning enough on its own. Harris, a Houston-based accountant who has some excellent traits of the successful American businessman. He’s fiercely loyal to his family, abstains from most of the vices that plague others, and works hard in his multiple endeavors, which are as far-ranging as organizing fundraisers and operating nightclubs. He even learned some of his best negotiating skills as a young man running errands for the Mob. When a favor for a friend takes Jack to Los Angeles, he gets a tip from the shady attorney, Jerry Haggerty (James Caan, playing shady to a level I’ve never seen), that two yahoos named Wayne and Buck (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht) are onto something big in the new (at least in the early ‘90s) World Wide Web. They decided that the Internet is sorely lacking in terms of the illicit content that now hides behind its every binary corner and determine to upload photographs and videos from every pornographic magazine and VHS they could get their hands on, including a few of their own making. What every YouTube-r

of today takes for granted, these guys were doing twenty years ago. They even developed, allegedly, the software that allows customers to pay for content via a credit card number from anywhere in the world. Needless to say, this is quite like a license to print money and the millions start rolling in right away. Right alongside all the problems.

Being a smut peddler is like any other below board gig, at least as depicted in the movies.

Buck and Wayne hook up with some Russian investors (not the solid kind) and make pledges to their boss (Rade Serbedzija) to make repayment every month. When they’re late is when Jack gets involved, establishing the legitimate billing service that takes a cut between the creative and customer ends of the arrangement. His expertise in sorting out problems to benefit everyone get him into a world he doesn’t like, but fully supports. He also mixes with a young porn star (Laura Ramsey), some murderous goons (Terry Crews and Graham McTavish), a crooked politician

(Kelsey Grammer), and an FBI investigator (Kevin Pollak). The premise is great, the crisscross chronology of this movie actually works for it, and Wilson is perfectly cast as the confident, resourceful Harris. He even gets to flex his pipes for the film’s extensive use of voiceover narration.

“Middle Men” openly hypothesizes on the merits and necessity of the controversial material at the heart of its story. It’s an industry with annual returns over $500 billion and yet this movie is not going to be seen very widely (I was in Chicago for the Jimmy Buffett concert and had the opportunity to take in a sparsely-populated screening). It’s a shame, too, because in the hands of a major studio and an A-list director, this cast could have really turned out some amazing work. Instead, it’s a good effort...just a little seedy.

••• Middle Men runs 110 minutes and is rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, language, drug use, and violence. I give this film three stars out of four.

Movies "The Expendables" an exercise in nostalgia

By JAKE COYLE Associated Press “The Expendables” is an exercise in nostalgia for the bygone era of muscly, macho action films. It’s willfully out of date, like an aging hair band that can’t pack away the spandex.

Sylvester Stallone, the director, co-writer and star, has said he set out to make a movie “with brains and brawn, not modern technology.”

Stallone thus comes across as a kind of Rip Van Winkle, had Van Winkle only been a diehard Guns ’N Roses fan. “The Expendables” is awash in motorcycles, tattoos, black leather, glistening biceps and big guns. Though the “Rambo” star’s suggestion that contemporary movies have lost something of their masculinity and authenticity bears some truth, surely the answer isn’t to pretend the last two decades never happened.

But here we are with “The Expendables,” which immediately — and without irony — announces its defense of such kitsch with, yes, a fade to a full moon.

Stallone is Barney Ross, the leader of a group of mercenaries who are played by most

of the remaining defenders of high body count, testosterone-filled action: the British action star Jason Statham (blade expert Lee Christmas), the Chinese martial artist Jet Li (as Yin Yang), WWE wrestler Steve Austin (Paine), ultimate fighter Randy Couture (Toll Road), former NFL player and Old Spice commercial actor Terry Crews (as the absurdly named Hale Caesar) and Dolph Lundgren, famously the Russian boxer Ivan Drago from the “Rocky” films (as the loose cannon Gunner Jensen).

But the “all-star” action lineup also includes cameos from Bruce Willis (as a contractor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger (as a rival mercenary).

Schwarzenegger makes a brief appearance, entering through a light-soaked doorway like an action film angel. The scene is played for as many wink-wink laughs as possible; as he exits, Willis’ character wonders what his problem is, while Barney wryly replies: “He wants to be president.”

The most respected actor to be summoned for duty is Mickey Rourke, who plays the group’s job hunter, a grizzled former mercenary named Tool. It’s a testament to Rourke’s abilities that he somehow manages t o m o v e t h ro u g h “ T h e E x p e n d a b l e s ”

enlivening it with old warrior wisdom (in a monologue, he says he’s dead inside, “Dracula dead”) while still maintaining his dignity.

The crew is hired out to storm the fictional Caribbean island of Vilena, where a corrupt general (the usually comedic David Zayas) and a villainous, rogue CIA agent (the well chosen Eric Roberts) are in power. The general’s daughter (Giselle Itie) is leading a resistance, and she quickly becomes a focal point of the mission (“Bad Shakespeare,” notes Roberts’ character).

There are the slightest of political undertones: The mercenaries — perhaps like America — have become too soulless in their warring occupation. There’s a gratuitous waterboading scene, as well. The possibility of redemption hangs in saving Vilena.

But the world of “The Expendables” has shockingly little connection to anything like the real world. The principle setting on Vilena is a military compound like that of any “Rambo” movie or shoot ’em up video game: cargo boxes, sand bags and watch towers — all of your cliche fodder for explosions.

“The Expendables,” too, has the shallowest

of world views. There’s little room for women (Charisma Carpenter plays Lee Christmas’ cheating girlfriend, who quickly recedes from the film) and the men are most comfortable bantering with each other and cheering knife throwing contests. Morality isn’t complicated, the only really firm rule being that hitting women is intolerable — quite the moral stance.

Frequently, “The Expendables” is so incoherent, even on its own terms, as to be laughable. Menacing one-liners (like the one after a traitorous minion is shot: “Now we can see the inside of him, and I see lies!”) and poor production values made me wonder if I walked into not a movie theater but a time warp. This is a movie world where irony never happened. But that Stallone can be so ardent about returning to this kind of film gives “The Expendables” a strange charm. It’s absurd, easy to make fun of and remarkably out of touch. But one imagines it’s exactly the movie Stallone wanted to make. He loves this stuff, and one is inclined to allow him his quixotic, boyish dream where he is forever leaping through explosions and killing bad guys.

Another spoonful for "Nanny McPhee"

By JAKE COYLE Associated Press The Nanny McPhee movies may be principally for kids, but make no mistake about it: They are, quite literally, a parent’s dream.

Overwhelmed single parents with unruly kids are rescued by a magical nanny who seemingly appears out of nowhere. And at no cost! For some older moviegoers escorting little ones, this premise might be impossibly alluring.

And they said fans of “Avatar” were depressed when they left the theater.

“Nanny McPhee Returns” is the sequel to 2005’s “Nanny McPhee.”

B o t h w e re w r i t t e n b y E m m a Thompson (who stars as the nanny in question) based on Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda books, which were published in the 1960s and ‘70s.

That McPhee owes much to P.L. Travers’ Mary Poppins is obvious, and there’s a whiff of familiarity to both Nanny McPhee movies that prevent them from being truly fresh. But there’s still a warm, British naturalism to “Nanny McPhee Returns” and an old-fashioned cheerfulness uncommon to most of today’s kids movies.

In the first installment, McPhee, a mean-looking witch clad in black, came to the aid of a widowed father (Colin Firth).

This time around, she arrives to help Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal, with British accent in tow), a mother of three and wife to a farmer off fighting in World War II. The particular war is never

mentioned, but WWII is the film’s clear setting. A young nephew, Cyril Gray (Eros Vlahos) and his sister Celia (Rosie Taylor-Ritson) have been sent from their wealthy home in London to their aunt’s thatched-roofed farm house, an appalling development to their refined tastes. Eyeing the muddy farm, Cyril promptly declares it

the “land of poo.”

They immediately clash with Isabel’s three children: Norman (Asa Butterfield), Megsie (Lil Woods) and Vincent (Oscar Steer).

Isabel is drowning in the chaos, made worse by her ditzy candy shopkeeper (Maggie Smith).

McPhee arrives mysteriously, introducing herself (“little ‘c,’ big

‘P”’) as an “army nanny” who has been “deployed.” The government pays her way, she informs Isabel, though one can bet that free,

The American Scene Saint Louis Art Museum presents the works of Joe Jones

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Joseph John Jones was a 20th Century artist who was known for his landscape painting, his lithography and his mural paintings. Jones was born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., which is where his main influences came from. Although he lived the rest of his life in and around New York City, he was commissioned to return to St. Louis to paint a mural at the KMOX radio station.

Time Magazine followed Jones career, and Jone’s works donned the cover a couple of times.

This fall the Saint Louis Art Museum presents “Joe Jones: Painter of the American Scene.”

T h e f i e r y A m e r i c a n re a l i s t painter lived from 1909 to 1963 and worked amid the poverty of the Great Depression. His vibrant paintings achieved national acclaim in the 1930s and showcase the heart of American struggle – urban and rural, black and white, rich and poor.

Jones’ representations of life in the American heartland were driven by his commitment to proletarian causes and his identification with the working class. Drawn largely from private collections, including that of the Jones Family, “Joe Jones: Painter of the American Scene,” will feature 83 paintings, mural studies, drawings and prints by Jones.

St. Louis inspired much of Jones’ early work. He eagerly painted the Mississippi River and Forest Park.

His landscapes reveal the force of industry that dominated the Gateway City, with its skyscrapers, warehouses, garages and freight-train tracks prominently displayed. His style was rich, reductive yet representational, and was characterized by lively color. Large murals captured his vision of Midwestern wheat and corn harvests in the late 1930s, which Jones painted for New Deal recovery programs.

Jones also showed an uncanny sensitivity to the farmlands of his native Missouri, painting vibrant scenes of wheat threshing and other types of farm labor.

These agricultural subjects often evince his intense interest in the experiences of laborers and the tasks they perform. Throughout the most vital years of his career, Jones produced work that challenged audiences, advanced his formal and political commitments, and engaged with the major issues of his day.

Jones began as a modernist painter, but came to admire the Communist Party’s commitment to improving conditions for the working class. He eventually joined the party in 1933. Jones increasingly turned his attention to the indictment of social injustice, and his dramatic paintings and

prints addressed racial and class issues, condemning the horrific practice of lynching and promoting the cause of an empowered and racially integrated proletariat.

The exhibition will be on view Oct. 10, 2010 to Jan. 2, 2011 in the Main Exhibition Galleries at the Saint Louis Art Museum. “Joe Jones: Painter of the American Scene” was organized and curated b y A n d re w Wa l k e r, a s s i s t a n t director for curatorial affairs and curator of American art, and Janeen Turk, senior curatorial assistant.

The exhibition will also be on view at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tenn. Jan. 23, 2011, to April 17, 2011.

The accompanying catalogue, Joe Jones: Radical Painter of the American Scene, was published by the Saint Louis Art Museum, with the hardbound edition being distributed through University of Washington Press. The catalogue is edited by Andrew Walker and features essays by Andrew Walker, Janeen Turk, M. Melissa Wolfe, Kevin Sharp and Debra Bricker Balken.

Admission to the exhibition is $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, $4 for children 6 to 12, free for children younger than 6, free to members every day and free to all on Fridays. Tickets will be available at all MetroTix locations.

The first annual American Arts

The Harris-Stowe State University Players present Before the Lights Go Out, an original piece written

by HSSU Humanities Instructor Gregory Carr, on Friday, August 27, starring Emmy-winning storyteller Bobby Norfolk.

Before the Lights Go Out focuses on baseball legends and Hall of Famers outfielder James “Cool Papa” Bell and pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige, as well as the Negro Baseball Leagues. “I hope the audience gets a sense of history, a sense of pride and a sense of far we’ve come, but how far we have to go,” said author Carr.

Harris-Stowe Director of Speech and Theater Beverly Brennan will direct the piece as a tribute to her father, award-winning sportscaster Jack Buck. “It means so much because my dad was a fair and ‘multicultural’ guy long before it was in fashion,” said Brennan. “He knew and loved ‘Cool Papa’ and Satchel Paige!”

This performance will give the HSSU Players theater group the opportunity to study nationally recognized actor, Bobby Norfolk.

“Our hope is for our young actors to be able to ‘shadow’ a professional actor and learn from his techniques,” said author Carr. Norfolk welcomes the opportunity; he said, “It is a great honor for me to tell and perform this important story on the campus of Harris-Stowe State University.”

The HSSU Players will produce Before the Lights Go Out by operating the box office, serving as ushers, working backstage, running technical support and selling concessions. Even the concessions will contribute to the prominent baseball ambiance of the evening and include ballpark favorites: hot dogs, peanuts and crackerjacks.

Preceding the performance, a short documentary on the Negro Baseball League will be shown, and following the show, audience members will be treated to a Q-andA with Director Brennan, author Carr and actor Norfolk, ensuring a comprehensive and educational view of the Negro Baseball Leagues.

Before the Lights Go Out is a one-night-only show on Friday, August 27, at 8 p.m. in the Emerson Performance Center ’s Bank of America Theatre, 3101 Laclede Avenue; St. Louis, MO 63103.

CUTC to perform “Fiddler On The Roof” The loving and heartwarming hit Broadway musical about life in a small Jewish village in Russia on the brink of revolution, Fiddler on the Roof, will be presented by Curtains Up Theater Co. at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 2-4, and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4-5, all in the theater at Katherine Dunham Hall on the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Jerry Bock’s music and Sheldon Harnick’s lyrics, with book by Joseph Stein, have entertained audiences around the world. Based on the stories of beloved Jewish author Sholem Aleichem, the musical is set in 1905 Anatevka, Russia, chronicling Tevye, a dairyman; his wife, Golde; and their five daughters as they cope with a harsh existence under Tsarist rule.

The production, directed by Glenn Saltamachia, tells of the traditions of a people who are struggling against the threat of losing those traditions in a modern world and how their fragile existence hangs in the balance as the winds of political change swirl around them. Tevye, the father figure, is perplexed as he deals with change, while appealing to his creator for guidance.

The DuQuoin State Fair

By DEBBIE SETTLE Of The Edge Many people make it a tradition to visit the DuQuoin State Fair every year. Whether you are visiting as a competitor, a vendor or as a participant, this year visitors are urged to take note of the history of the picturesque southern Illinois fairgrounds Horse racing might be the big draw at the Aug. 27 to Sept. 6, DuQuoin State Fair, but this year officials are hoping that visitors also take note of the history contained in the 750-acre DuQuoin fairgrounds.

“The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990, adding this prestigious recognition to the beauty of this southern Illinois jewel,” said Jan Grimes, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA). “We urge visitors to enjoy and appreciate the early to mid 20th Century history represented in the fairgrounds’ carefully planned structures.”

The DuQuoin State Fairgrounds started as a private horse racing track developed by William R. Hayes in 1923. It featured a halfmile track, grandstand, and horse stables.

Hayes wanted the fairgrounds to be like the ideal Southern horse farm, complete with grand entrances, long drives, and a mansion, so he hired St. Louis architect Oliver W. Stiegemeyer in the 1940s to design almost every building. The result is a pleasing Art Deco style of architecture throughout the fairgrounds.

Horse racing was always the main fairgrounds attraction. In 1924 the fair hosted the first night horse race in the United States thanks to the novelty of electric lighting.

Hayes always wanted DuQuoin to host the Grand Circuit of Harness Racing, and his wish came true in 1942 when World War II suspended horse racing at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. When William Hayes died, his sons Eugene and Don continued their father’s legacy and were able to bring the Hambletonian, a premier national harness race, to DuQuoin. While the Hambletonian is no longer held there, the World Trotting Derby

now calls the DuQuoin State Fair home.

A walk through the carefully maintained DuQuoin State Fairgrounds reflects its horse racing history and its well-planned architecture.

Original Track, 1923 The Original Track, built in 1923, is now an all-weather, aggregate-surfaced half mile track banked toward the center for auto racing. It was the main feature when the fairgrounds first opened.

Horse Barns, 1937 - 1942 The Horse Barns are located off of Derby Lane and were built between 1937 and 1942. These nine timber frame stables have high central gables. The barns also feature decorative cupolas along each roof ridge.

They are currently used to stable horses that will later race on the Grandstand Track.

Other Barns, 1940 These barns were built around 1940. Each features an end gable with a raised center, as well as paddocks next to the barns. The westernmost barn has been converted to a bar/restaurant frequented by fairgoers.

Hayes Mansion Residences, 1942 The Hayes Mansion Residences were built in 1942 for Eugene and Don Hayes, the sons of fair owner William Hayes. They are both two and a half story wood-frame houses designed in the Colonial Revival style and feature Art Moderne details, including wrought-iron banisters. An in-ground swimming pool, a bath house, and tennis courts complete the setting. Today, the elaborately-designed Hayes homes serve as the downstate Executive Mansion for the governor to use when he is in town.

Administration and Main Stable Building, 1945 This two story building was built in 1945 in the Colonial Revival style and features classical pilasters and an elaborate roof deck railing. Stable wings consisting of wide galleries in front of the horse stalls can be used by competitors. The buildings are topped by gable roofs with peak ventilators, all supported by a colonnade.

Concession Stands, 1946 The Concession Stands are located just across from the Grandstand and made their debut in 1946. The two buildings are designed in the Art Deco style and still serve their original function of serving food and selling tickets. Both buildings have octagonal ends with five picture windows for serving patrons. Central sections rise above the ends and have paired, oversize doorways trimmed in limestone at each end with wrought-iron grillwork across the top. Lanterns back-light glass block walls after dark.

Exhibition Hall, 1946 The Exhibition Hall was built in 1946 and is located north of the intersection of Longview and Expo Drives. At 33,000 square feet, it is the largest non-horse related building on the fairgrounds. The one-story Art Deco building has a main gabled section and façade with a round window surrounded by decorative elements. Two large metal windows line the main entrance. A new roof, doors, and windows were added in 1989. It is used to house various DuQuoin State Fair exhibits and presentations.

Grandstand, 1947 The Grandstand is the fairgrounds’ largest building, dominating the entire main section.

It was built in 1947 as a more majestic replacement to the 1923 original, which was destroyed by fire.

Its steel frame construction features a brick veneer and the west entrance has a symmetrical design with a center bay. Its elaborate detail and trim sport Art Deco and Art Moderne designs, including wood and glass doors, metal canopies with flag staffs, and stylized pilasters outlined with limestone.

“DuQuoin State Fair” is prominently etched on the central bay. The front features eight large circular windows overlooking the fairgrounds. A window band with glass block and an open colonnade with wrought-iron grillwork complete the majestic Grandstand.

The Grandstand features covered bleacher and open bleacher seating. Besides racing, it also hosts musical performances during the fair.

Racetrack, 1947 The one-mile oval Racetrack was built at the same time as the Grandstand and features a graded soil surface ideal for horse racing. A chain link fence surrounds the entire mile. A lagoon in the center was formed from the dirt excavated to form the track.

Main Entrance, 1948

The Main Entrance was built in 1948. The one story gate houses are virtually identical to one another, both designed in the Art Deco style, with eight concrete “V” designs culminating in freestanding limestone urns.

Decorated limestone pillars are located in the center. A metal arch featuring the words “World Trotting Derby” connects the two gatehouses, as do decorative wrought-iron gates. Brick columns and limestone trim support the words “DuQuoin State Fair.”

This years fair is open Aug. 27 to Sept. 6, opens daily at 10 a.m., with carnival rides opening at noon on weekends and 3 p.m. on weekdays. A season parking pass is $20, or $5 per day on main parking lot, $10 per day at gate 1 and $5 for gate 4. Monday, Aug. 31 and Tuesday, Sept. 1, parking is free.

Purchaser will redeem coupons “Good for 1 All Day Ride Wristband” at the Midway Wristband Redemption Center on the Miller Spectacular Midway. Discounted coupons will be sold for $15 each, a savings of $5 off regular price of $20.

Travel Travel briefs FAA computers still vulnerable to cyber attack WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Aviation Administration computer systems remain vulnerable to cyber attacks despite improvements at a number of key radar facilities in the past year, according to a new government review.

The Department of Transportation’s Inspector General said while the FAA has taken steps to install more sophisticated systems to detect cyber intrusions in some air traffic control facilities, most sites have not been upgraded. And there is no timetable yet to complete the project, the IG said.

FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said the agency is working on a timetable and will notify the IG with that information soon. The FAA also said that upgrades to critical air traffic control systems have taken precedence over the intrusion detection improvements at a number of facilities.

Without the detection abilities, the FAA cannot effectively monitor air traffic control for possible cyber attacks or take action to stop them, the inspector general said in a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

The findings echo broad U.S. government worries about gaps in critical U.S. computer systems and networks that leave them vulnerable to cyber attacks by criminals, terrorists or nation states.

U.S. networks are persistently probed and attacked by hackers and criminals looking to steal money or information, get access to classified documents or military technologies, or disrupt networks that control vital utilities and services.

Last year, a government audit found that air traffic control systems were vulnerable to cyber attacks, and that some support systems had been breached, allowing hackers access to personnel records and network servers.

The computer systems used to control air traffic are often in the same building as ones used for administrative functions, but they are not connected.

Cyber experts repeatedly warn, h o w e v e r, t h a t i n s o m e c a s e s software glitches and other gaps can be exploited by hackers to move between computer systems at critical infrastructure facilities.

In the report last year, the IG warned that although most of the attacks disrupted only support systems, they could spread to the operational systems that control communications, surveillance and flight information used to separate aircraft.

Since then, the FAA has taken a number of steps to shore up the vulnerabilities in its computer networks.

Randy Babbitt, two senior members of Congress said they are concerned about the vulnerabilities. Rep. John Mica, a Florida lawmaker who is ranking Republican on the House Transportation panel, and Rep. Thomas Petri, R-Wisc., urged Babbitt in a letter last week to take any necessary steps to immediately address the security issue.

Mica and Petri requested the initial inspector general’s investigation into the matter last year.

Terrorism fears end tours at Vermont maple factory S T. J O H N S B U RY, V t . ( A P ) — Terrorism concerns are keeping tourists off the factory floor at one of the nation’s largest maple production facilities in northeastern Vermont.

For almost a century Maple Grove Farms of St. Johnsbury has produced maple syrup and maple candies. And for much of that time, tourists have been able to watch the production process from the factory floor.

But no longer.

Delta to allow passengers to book through Facebook ATLANTA (AP) — Delta Air Lines Inc. said Thursday it’s launched a new “Ticket Window” on Facebook that will allow passengers to book directly on the social media site.

It’s the first time an airline has allowed customers to reserve flights on Facebook, although nearly all major U.S. airlines use Facebook and Twitter to promote sales.

Delta plans to expand the Ticket Window to other sites, including online banner ads from which customers could book directly.

The airline said the move, along with a redesign of its website delta. com earlier this week, is part of an overall effort to interact directly with its customers on the Web. Big airlines like Delta, the world’s largest, have been slower than their

Travel agency MakeMyTrip soars in market debut NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Indian travel agency MakeMyTrip Ltd. soared as much as 80 percent in their market debut on the Nasdaq exchange, even as the broader markets declined.

It could be the best first-day performance for an IPO this year.

Engines Inc., which so far has posted the top first-day return, closed up nearly 44 percent in its debut in midMarch.

MakeMyTrip Ltd. began as a website in the U.S., mainly serving Indian expats wanting to travel to India. In 2005, it began operations in India, offering airline tickets as well as hotel bookings, bus tickets and other services to the country’s fast growing demographic of middleclass consumers. MakeMyTrip cites data from consultancy firm McKinsey saying that the Indian middle class is expected to grow from 50 million people in 2005 to 583 million people in 2025.

India has a much smaller segment of its population on the Internet than the U.S. does, and the company says its revenue will rise as increasingly wealthy Indians get online.

The company’s revenue grew throughout the recession. In the year ended March 31, 1.6 million domestic air ticket transactions were booked through MakeMyTrip’s website in India, up from 1.2 million in the previous 12 months.

A survivor’s story Author to speak at fundraiser for breast cancer research

By ANN NICCUM Of The Edge St. Louis author and breast cancer survivor Susan McBride will be the guest speaker at the 11th Annual Horizon of Hope Campaign Dinner.

The annual event that benefits breast cancer research will be hosted this year on Monday, Aug. 30 at the Leclaire Room of N.O. Nelson on the Lewis and Clark campus in Edwardsville.

Horizon of Hope has not only raised nearly $80,000 for the cause, but it has also created an event where cancer survivors and their families can come together, share their stories and be inspired.

The Horizon of Hope Campaign Dinner was started by Patty Thiede and Sheri Goleanor. The two said their co-worker and friend Kathy Toelke inspired them with her positive outlook and her ability to face challenges as she went through breast cancer treatment and they wanted to do something. So, the two started Horizon of Hope.

Every year since, Thiede and Goleanor have hosted this dinner and auction and invite someone to

share their story. This year, Thiede said McBride will share her story.

McBride has written a number of books from young adult to humorous mysteries, such as “Too Pretty To Die,” which she finished while going through breast cancer treatment. In her women’s fiction debut, McBride’s “The Cougar Club” features three lifelong pals from St. Louis who reconnect in their mid-40s and discover that it’s never too late to follow your heart.

McBride recently signed with HarperCollins to write two more women’s fiction titles. In addition, McBride was named a St. Louis Magazine “Top Single” at age 40 in 2005 (though she is not single anymore).

The 11th Annual Horizon of Hope Campaign Dinner is $35 per person. The event includes music, food, speakers, raffle and a silent auction. Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Again, all the proceeds benefit breast cancer research. The LCCC N.O. Nelson campus is located at 600 Troy Road in Edwardsville.

Grab the latest bag trend by the handle NEW YORK (AP) — The hottest bags for fall are fit for a lady.

Replacing the large, heavily embellished bags of recent history are vintage-inspired ladylike models topped off with a handle or two.

The style offers a feminine contrast to fall’s menswearinspired details like strong-shouldered jackets and complement the longer-length ’50s style skirts being turned out in pinstripes and plaids.

“The new direction for handbags this season is a return to a structured, ladylike handbag,” says Ken Downing, senior vice president and fashion director of Neiman Marcus.

“With the sharp tailoring and appreciation for men’s tailored details, the structured bag is the go-to bag.”

Sister classic-silhouette satchels and frame bags had their place on the runway, too.

These bags all look right with of-the-moment fashion, but also go well with just about everything in your closet short of formal eveningwear, says Julia Kalachnikoff, accessories director for Lucky magazine. All retro in look, they are versatile enough for jeans but go through cocktails, she says.

Some of the latest options from designers such as Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Prada recall the bags carried by gloved hands in the middle of the last century. Today’s versions, though, are anything but stuffy, and there’s plenty of room for all your stuff.

are modernized with cell phone pockets, sleek hardware and mixed materials, Kalachnikoff says. Many of the satchels feature the now-ubiquitous crossbody strap.

“It’s a way of modernizing a shape that was big in the ’50s and ’60s,” she explains.

They carry the overall tone of polish, crafted in leather or texture-rich ostrich, pony and deer skin, crocodile, alligator and snakeskin. Trims in velvet and lace add a touch of the romantic and some are done up in fur or have a chain or lock detail.

“It’s more about the leather than it is about hardware or embellishments,” says Claire Foster, accessories editor for trend forecaster Stylesight. “There was studding all over the place for such a long time. That’s completely gone.”

Kalachnikoff calls the bags “the eventual backlash” against black and heavy hardware. “It’s nice to be cleaned up and keep things a little more simple.”

There’s also a lighter palette.

“Camel is really the big hit color of the season,” she says, adding that there are also soft yellows, blues and greens.

“There are lots and lots of neutrals. Everything is just a little bit muted.”

Foster also notes the return to tan leathers, like sand, stone and mustard, which are being shown along with pale pinkand blue-grays.

Neiman’s is featuring the trend in all shades of green, especially olive, a reflection of the latest infatuation with the

military look. The greens work well with popular apparel colors, including browns and camels as well as bright jewel tones like saffron and paprika. “Olive has a newness to it,” Downing says. “It becomes a neutral for the season.”

Traditional and a little more conservative, the bags are seen as in keeping with today’s minimal times and minimal clothing looks.

Amid the economic crisis, Foster says, women still want to shop but are looking to get more for their money. These bags are a good investment, she says, because they are less showy and more subtle.

“They are the bag you will carry the whole season with every outfit. It’s returning to that old way of looking at an accessory — that it’s going to last you.”

With so many choices, Foster thinks they’ll be a hit. “You can take it in more of a fashion directional edge if you want to because it has interesting properties and exotic leather but the simpler styles are really accessible for a wide range of people,” she says.

Kalachnikoff agrees. “Whatever your look is, there’s something in this category that will appeal to you.”

There are always other bag shapes to buy, just in case you’re looking for something different: —Strips of fringy leather have been around since the Wild West but they’re getting the luxury treatment on handbags.

Jimmy Choo, Prada and Fendi are offering a fringe bag or two for fall.

20 years of custard and concerts Bobby Kozyak finds secret of success in Maryville

By BILL TUCKER Of The Edge If faced with a choice of quality or quantity, Bobby Kozyak will take quality every time.

That’s why the owner of Bobby’s Frozen Custard in Maryville is celebrating his 20th year in business.

Music has become part of the atmosphere at Bobby’s and represents one of the few changes Kozyak has made during his 20-year stint in Maryville.

For all intents and purposes, his custard stand was the first on this side of the river – the first to open and the first to make it big.

His approach has been simple – meticulous, but simple. “ I t h i n k w e ’ v e c re a t e d a n affordable luxury.” Kozyak said.

“We’ve got something very special here in the quality of the custard. And we’re now providing free entertainment. We create an experience here.”

The experience, judging from the size of weekend crowds, is one people want to enjoy over and over.

Frozen custard is the key.

“My dad always said, 'Protect the hen that lays the golden egg,' and that is the custard,” Kozyak said. “I don’t ever want to get away from that. I don’t want to be known for anything but custard.”

That’s why Bobby’s has branched out just once in its 20-year history, adding caramel apples to its menu every fall for the last dozen years.

“I think you can try to do too many things, which is tempting because you have a captive audience,” Kozyak said “You think, ‘Wow, if they're here buying custard, I’ll sell them a h a m b u r g e r. ’ There’s a million things w e

could do, but then all of a sudden, where are you?”

Kozyak has resisted such temptations, keeping his focus squarely on the quality of his frozen custard.

He knew from the outset that with customers plunking down $2, $3 or $4 for sundaes, shakes and concretes, he was going need to a lot of customers.

“This is a destination drive. I don’t really have neighborhood traffic. The biggest percentage of our business is people driving up,” Kozyak said. “A lot of people said, ‘You’re going to die. You can’t make it there in the little town of Maryville.’ Well, we needed Maryville, but we needed a lot more.

I just had faith. If you build something really special, people will come to you.”

And about five years ago, Kozyak decided to make Bobby’s even more special – as much for himself as the customers.

“I was getting a little burnt out after about 15 years,” Kozyak said. “I’m like, ‘What can I do to rejuvenate this?”

He turned to one of his true passions – music.

Kozyak began small, contracting local bands to play on weekends.

That idea, like his frozen custard, took off, too.

“I’ve always had a love for music.

I never thought in this business I’d have anything to do with music,” Kozyak said.

“Five

years ago, we started the music, the live performances, and it just keeps getting bigger and better. We have bands every Saturday and Sunday. I never got to hear t h e

bands when we were open because I was always here. So I brought the bands to me. Not only do I like it, everybody seems to like it.”

Bobby’s features a wide-array of musical styles in its outdoor performance rotation – everything from blues to country to bluegrass and from jazz to swing to jump.

Patrons come for the custard and stay for the music, which could present a parking nightmare.

But Bobby’s offers more than 200 spaces and both neighbors – the First National Bank and the Red Apple Restaurant – have been accommodating in the use of their parking lots on weekends.

Beyond the concerts, Bobby’s offers Open Mic Nights – the next one is scheduled for Aug. 25 – at which anyone willing to stand at the microphone and belt out a song c an do so – and earn a $5 gift card in the process.

Open Jam Nights – hosted by Kozyak himself – are the latest additions to the lineup.

Kids’ Nights, too, have been a hit and one is scheduled on Monday as Silly Jilly, a balloon twisting clown, and Gateway Grizzlies’ mascot Izzy will be making appearances.

The custard and music have combined to create an environment that has resulted in 20 years of success.

Kozyak, however, is quick to point out the other key ingredient.

“I’ve got a tremendous staff,” he said. “I’m very meticulous and we stress that in everything we do.”

Kozyak has employed hundreds of people over the last two decades and he’s still impressed with what teenagers can do.

“We hire almost 50 people here in the summer and it’s just fun working with young people,” Kozyak said. “I hear people say, ‘This generation isn’t like the old days.’ I’ll defend this generation ‘til the end. Yeah, times have changed, but they’re still great kids.”

And while the hourly help comes and goes, Kozyak has

latched on to a pair of managers who are also in for the long haul.

Joanne Proyazrik has been at Bobby’s 20 years and Jennifer Stolizta 15.

Mrs. Bobby – Kozyak’s wife Debbie – has also been a key to the frozen custard stand’s

success.

“I could never have done this without her and I continue to rely on her,” Kozyak said. “She ran the place for the first three years while I worked at another business. She’s the woman behind the scenes.

She’s amazing. She doesn’t get the credit she deserves, but it’s 50/50.”

Wi t h s c h o o l b e g i n n i n g n e x t week, Kozyak is preparing to shift his focus to fall, when his staff will make as many as 1,200 caramel apples in a day.

They’ll be available at the end of August and will be available at Bobby’s in Maryville as well as Schnucks, Shop ‘N Save and 50 independent retailers.

Those caramel apples – like the best-selling Turtle Sundae – are crafted with care and an eye on quality.

That’s why Bobby’s is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

“There’s other custard stands, there are other places that have music. But the whole combination, I think, is very, very unique,” Kozyak said. “I want to provide a nice healthy, wholesome, family environment for people. And that’s what we’ve done.”

Dining Delights Books offer a mix of celebrities and dinner NEW YORK (AP) –As much as Americans love their food, they seem to enjoy it best with a dash of celebrity.

Luckily, the celebrity food world loves to keep people well fed. There is a stack of new books by big names to keep you sated through fall.

Super chef Mario Batali’s “Molto Gusto” offers up perfect suppers and ideas for casual entertaining.

Fava beans straight from the farmers market pair with zesty lemon and ricotta, and cherry tomatoes meet creme fraiche in elegant antipasti, most of which can be made well ahead of time.

Fresh sardines get a cinnamonscented marinade and well-toasted b re a d t o p p e d w i t h p e p p e re d chickpeas or succulent eggplant makes for crunchy-moist bruschetta.

An entire chapter on pizza will please obsessives with its promises of a crisp yet pliant crust, and cooks who live on pasta will find a quick but satisfying meal in egg-bathed penne alla papalina.

True to Batali’s signature emphasis on fresh, wholesome food, most recipes apply simple techniques to a handful of well-chosen ingredients.

Bright, white-background photos of the dishes, redolent in greens and reds and purples, let you eat first with your eyes. A great book for anyone who likes good food without the fuss.

You know eating local has gone mainstream when Emeril Lagasse is leaning on a garden tool. In “Farm to Fork: Cooking Local, Cooking Fresh,” the king of “BAM!” sniffs herbs and caresses tomatoes. Recipes for corn fritters and escarole soup with crushed red pepper promise good eating. Meanwhile, pumpkin pie gets extra mystique from a dash of cardamom. But despite the book’s handwriting font and a few enticing dishes — lemon-crusted halibut?

Yum! — nothing really screams fresh-from-the-farm.

In “Sara Moulton’s Everyday Family Dinners” the executive chef of the former Gourmet magazine offers tempting dishes such as eggs and creamed spinach in phyllo cups, tandoori chicken wings, and appetizers like chorizo-stuffed mushrooms and panko-crusted scallops.

But the eggs require more than a half-dozen steps, including buttering phyllo. The chicken wings have to marinate for 8 to 10 hours.

And scrumptious as the appetizers sound, I don’t know any working mom or dad who’s going to dish up three or four of them to “dazzle one and all with the variety,” as Moulton suggests. A lovely collection of recipes, but very few that you’re likely to tackle on a week day.

But Tex-Mex tuna casserole?

That could happen on any given Wednesday. The salsa-and-cilantrospiked staple joins other simple, out-of-the-box ideas in “Cat Cora’s

Classics with a Twist.” The first and only female Iron Chef America puts a fresh spin on old favorites while keeping things simple.

Greek-style nachos feature pita chips, olives and yogurt, and clam chowder gets glammed up with bacon and sweet potatoes. But the book’s crowning achievement? It’s got to be tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons. Like self-adhesive stamps, it makes you wonder why no one thought of it sooner.

In “The Good Stuff Cookbook,” “Top Chef” veteran Spike Mendelsohn reveals the secrets of his Washington eatery, where Capitol Hill staffers line up well before noon to score his farmhouse burgers made with local beef, rosemary-sprinkled fries and toasted marshmallow milkshakes.

Good Stuff sauce — a twist on thousand island dressing — shares the pages with chipotle pesto, Old Bay mayonnaise, and other burgerenhancing accoutrements. There’s a salad chapter, if you care. And how do you make a burger even better?

“Add cheese, add bacon,” says Spike. A man who understands.

1/4 cup sunflower seeds Season the scallops with salt and pepper. Spread the Wondra or flour on a plate, then dredge the scallops through it, shaking off any excess.

In a large skillet over medium, heat 2 tablespoons of the oil. Add the scallops to the skillet and saute for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Transfer the scallops to a plate and let stand until they are at room temperature.

In a small saucepan, simmer the grapefruit juice until it reduces to 2 tablespoons. Transfer to a small bowl. Add the shallot, rice vinegar, sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Whisk until the sugar and salt have dissolved. Slowly whisk in the remaining vegetable oil, then whisk in the juices that have accumulated on the scallop plate until the dressing reaches the desired consistency.

Toss the lettuce with 1/3 cup of the dressing. Mound the lettuce over 4 plates and top with the scallops, avocado and grapefruit.

Sprinkle with the scallions and sunflower seeds, and drizzle with the remaining dressing.
