"Viva Las Vegas" Friends of the Wildey plan another bash with Elvis For The Edge Join the Friends of the Wildey Theatre on Thursday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wildey for a one-night showing of the legendary 1964 classic film, “Viva Las Vegas” starring Elvis Presley and Ann Margret. In addition to showing “Viva Las Vegas” – which is celebrating its 50th anniversary re-release this year – the Wildey will also be hosting Elvis Impressionist Steve Davis who will be providing a special welcome with his guitar.

Often regarded by fans and by film critics as one of Presley's best movies, the film was noted for the on-screen chemistry between Elvis and the incomparable Ann-Margret. In this classic tale of “boy meets girl,” Elvis plays a race-car driver competing in the Las Vegas Grand Prix. To finance his entry, he takes a job as a casino waiter. Naturally, he is occasionally prevailed upon to sing. As always, Elvis chases all the wrong girls, only to ignore the "right" one, portrayed by AnnMargret in her youthful prime. With no fewer than 12 songs on the soundtrack, “Viva Las Vegas” was destined to become one of the top films of the early 1960s.

Edwardsville native Jodie Meyers Oates comes around a corner during a 2014 race in Tuscon, Ariz. Meyers will be competing in the Stifel Edwardsville Rotary Criterium in memory of her dad who passed away on June 12.

Daughter to race in honor of father

T

he Stifel Edwardsville Rotary Criterium offers cyclists a chance to compete in a unique atmosphere that includes live music, cowbells and spectators lined up behind hay bales.

For Jodie Meyer Oates, who will compete in the Women’s Open Race at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16, she will have a chance to honor her dad, Joe Meyer, who passed away on June 12.

“About a week ago I started thinking about (the Criterium) again. My sister tagged me in the event post Facebook,” wrote Jodie in an e-mail. “It’s been a tough decision on multiple levels. I know that I won’t hear my dad cheer me on or see his big smile as I come across the finish line.

That part is heartbreaking for me.”

This would have been the first race that Joe would have been able to watch Jodie compete in. A 2002 Edwardsville High School graduate, she currently lives in Phoenix, Ariz., with her husband Jason Oates, who is in the United States Air Force.

It was Joe that inspired her to compete in the Criterium in the first place. He was an active member of the Edwardsville Rotary Club.

“His enthusiasm inspired me to want to race in it,” Jodie wrote. “When I would call and tell him how my races in Arizona were going, the conversation always turned into him telling me about the Edwardsville Criterium. I remember him asking if I warmed up on trainers like they had seen in the park, if people have cowbells like they do in Edwardsville, if large crowds of people come out to watch us race.

“You could hear how proud he was of Edwardsville, the Rotary Club, the

businesses and the community for supporting and putting on such a well-run event. You could hear it in his voice, and that voice is what pushed me to make it a goal for this year. For my dad to see me race in the town I grew up in, I told him I would do my best to make it out for it.”

It was Feb. 10 that Jodie, who is a Road Bike Captain for the AZ Jobing.com Women’s Racing team, set the goal for a homecoming.

Then sitting as a Category 4 runner, she told herself she would commit to riding in the Criterium if she made it into Category 3 by accumulating race points. There are four categories for women — five for men. Racers can move up categories by accumulating race points based on their performances.

Category 1 is the top level.

“It was a personal goal because my dad kept talking up the Criterium,” Jodie wrote.

“He knew that I raced, but I don’t think he realized that I was racing like the ones he would see at the Criterium. I wanted to come home so he could see me.”

Five days later, though, she was injured in the Sun Devil Classic Criterium at the Arizona State University Research Park in Tempe, Ariz.

The crash occurred on the final corner of the race and left Jodie unconscious momentarily.

“It is always a dangerous place, because everyone wants to be in the best position coming out of the last corner for the sprint to the finish,” Jodie wrote. “About four of us got too close to each other, and I was the middle with nowhere to go. I ended up hitting the ground hard.”

The next thing Jodie remembered was being in the ambulance. She had suffered a severe concussion, a broken left arm with a radial head fracture, a large gash under an eye and upper lip and multiple deep

bruises. There was also skin missing.

As for the bike, Jodie needed a new shifter, a pedal, tape and a wheel. She also had sunglasses destroyed.

It is the only major injury that Jodie has suffered on the bike. She has been in cycling since 2008, but didn’t start racing until the beginning of this year.

Roughly a month after the crash, Jodie was back on the bike in her first road race. She competed in the 28th Annual Tuscon Bicycle Classic from March 14-16.

It was while she was there that Joe was diagnosed with cancer. She pulled out of the road race, after completing the time trial earlier in the event.

A week later, on March 22, Jodie completed the 100-mile Tour de Cure Phoenix, which raised money for the American Diabetes Association. She met her fundraising goal of $500 and Jason raised $265.

“My dad was a huge supporter for us,” Jodie wrote. “All three of my step-siblings have diabetes, so I did that for them. It was tough, because I wasn’t fully healed. I wore a jersey that I had all of my family sign the back of.”

On June 10, Jodie accumulated enough points to move up to Category 3.

Two days later, Joe passed away after his battle with cancer. Jodie was in an Arizona airport, waiting for her flight home to be with her family at the time of his passing.

Before the visitation and funeral, Jodie competed in the O’Fallon Grand Prix on June 14. It was her way of coping with the loss of her dad.

“I had signed up for the races in O’Fallon before I left Phoenix, of course not knowing it would be days after my dad passed,” Jodie wrote. “I think everyone has their own way of working through emotional times in life, and for me that involves turning over pedals, feeling the breeze on my face and the calm I

get from riding.

“As I pedaled, I was able to think about my dad and made all that happened a little clearer. The course, the race organizers and the fellow riders were some of the nicest I’ve raced with.”

After the visitation and funeral, Jodie went to races in Reno, Nev., for two days. She later competed in the Cascade Classic in Bend, Ore. The cycling is starting to wind down as summer draws to a close.

She will, however, still have at least one major race to go through with the Criterium. She will get a chance to ride in the downtown that she grew up in, and do it for her dad who taught her how to ride.

“I still remember the day my dad and I went to the Cyclery and picked up my first bike,” she wrote. “Before that he would pull my brother and me behind him on his road bike.”

This will be the third Illinois race that Jodie will compete in this year. Along with the O’Fallon Grand Prix, she also took part in the 13th Annual Hillsboro-Roubaix on April 26.

It’s an experience that she is looking forward to. Following her race, she will join the festive crowd and celebrate the final two races of the evening.

“Crits are a lot fun, not only for the riders, but also the spectators. As someone watching, you see the field go by, cheer for a rider, then hope you see them come around that last corner in first place,” Jodie wrote.

“And from a rider’s point of view, you hear someone cheer you on and it keeps you motivated to pedal harder. I love it.”

And Jodie won’t have to look to far for motivation when she returns.

“I am doing the race in honor of my dad’s love of this community,” she wrote, “and his determination never to give up.”

The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts’ 2014-2015 season presents local and returning favorites and some well-known performers and speakers making their Hett debut. McKendree adds kids' run to Harvest Challenge

A one-kilometer children’s fun run is a new addition to McKendree University’s “Harvest Challenge” road race on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Lebanon, Ill. Adult competitors can choose their distance, a 5K run-walk or a half-marathon run.

Start time for the 5K (3.1 miles) and 13.1 mile-races is 8 a.m., after a pre-race briefing at 7:40 a.m. Both courses begin at

the center of campus and travel through historic downtown Lebanon and the surrounding a re a . T h e 5 K ro u t e t h e n g o e s north to Horner Park and returns to the finish line on campus. The h a l f - m a r a t h o n w i n d s t h ro u g h the scenic farmland of rural northern St. Clair and southern Madison Counties before returning to McKendree.

The “Kids’ K” option, for children ages 12 and under not entered in a longer race, will start at 8:50 a.m. at the Harvest Challenge finish line. The 1K (1,000 meters or .62 mile) run or walk will make a loop and return to the finish line chute.

Wa l k e r s a n d s t r o l l e r s a r e welcome to participate in the 5K or the 1K. Medals will be awarded in six age categories to the top three male and female finishers of each race, with trophies to the overall winners.

“Our race has become a popular training opportunity for runners who will compete in the Chicago Marathon in October,” said Kim Smallheer, McKendree director of recreational programs

The fee is $15 for the 5K and $33 for the half-marathon ($20 or $40 respectively on race day).

The 5K participants will receive three-quarter sleeve T-shirts, while half-marathoners will receive long-sleeve “ p e r f o r m a n c e ” T- s h i r t s a n d finisher medals. Post-race refreshments will be provided while supplies last. The “Kids’ K” fee is $5 and includes a bib number and runner ’s medal.

Flea market returns to Grafton

The Riverside Flea Market in Grafton has returned to Grafton.

The flea market is held monthly on the fourth weekend, beginning with the March flea market. The market schedule will continue through October in Grafton.  The Grafton Riverside Flea is the largest flea market in the Alton region, boasting of more than 75 vendors with a wide selection of antiques, crafts, the usual flea market fare and food. There will be a number of new dealers plus familiar faces. The butterfly man will be there on Saturdays. Ninth Annual Tour de Coal Bike Ride is Sept. 27

Join the Coal Country Chamber of Commerce on its ninth annual Tour de Coal bicycle ride on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at the Benld City Hall-Civic Center, 201 E. Central Ave. in downtown Benld, Ill. (62009).

The Tour de Coal is for riders of all ages and abilities who have an interest in cycling in the Macoupin County, Ill., area.

The ride will be held in conjunction with the 15th Annual Fall Festival held at the Benld City Park, where the bike ride ends.

Choose from a 13.6-mile family ride, a mid-length 35-mile ride or a metric century (64.8 miles).

Fall Festival, and Breakfast with Santa.

The Benld/Gillespie area has a rich heritage because of its ties to the coal industry. The region has sizable numbers of people of German, Irish, Italian, Slavic, Scotch and Russian descent drawn to the region by mining.

The region is dotted with more than 27 old coal mines; and the Tour de Coal routes pass several of them. Some of these mines have been highlighted on the Tour de Coal Face book page which can be found at https://www. facebook.com/#!/tourdecoal?ref_ type=bookmark on the internet.

Benld is also home to The Holy Dormition of the Theotokos Russian Orthodox Church, originally built in 1895, the only c h u rc h i n I l l i n o i s u n d e r t h e jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Moscow and All Russia.

The 64-mile route also goes through the community of Bunker Hill, home to one of the ride's rest stops. There are 5 other rest stops throughout the ride.

Joseph Magnani, a bicycle racer who saw success in big European races in the 1930's and 1940's, grew up in nearby Mount Clare.

All other riders will start their ride heading north on Second Street as in the past. The mass start is NOT mandatory for metric century riders. If you plan to ride the metric century and do not want to start at 7:00 AM that is alright too. Again, it is not mandatory. All riders other than the mass start riders can begin their ride anytime prior to the closing of registration.

Music Tuning in GACA set for 2014-15 season

It seems only a few weeks ago that John Davidson was playing the season finale for the Greater Alton Concert Assocation . The group wrapped up a great 73rd season after being entertained by The Four Freshmen, Double Grande, The Gothard Sisters and The Masters of Motown. The group has announced is lineup for the 2014-2015 74th Season of the GACA. Sunday Sept. 21, 2014, 3 p.m.

We kick off the season with award winning artist Collin Raye.

He shot to fame in 1991 with the song “Love, Me”. This song continues to be used for wedding, anniversaries, memorial services and funerals. Collin is a musician who uses his music and stardom to pro-mote positive and loving messages. SIM-Samaritan's Purse facility is the only treatment center for Ebola in the West African country.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Two North Carolina-based missionary groups have o rd e re d t h e e v a c u a t i o n o f t h e i r n o n essential personnel from Liberia after a doctor and a missionary contracted Ebola.

SIM (S-I-M) USA President Bruce J o h n s o n a n n o u n c e d Tu e s d a y t h a t h i s group and Samaritan's Purse decided on the evacuation following an upsurge in the number of Ebola cases in Liberia. A statement from SIM says no symptoms of Ebola are present in any of the evacuees, who are being monitored continually.

A Texas-trained doctor and a missionary from Charlotte have contracted the disease and remain in isolation in Liberia.

Johnson says a Charlotte church will hold a prayer service Wednesday evening for SIM's Nancy Writebol and for Dr. Kent Brantly, who is with Samaritan's Purse.

There is no known cure for Ebola, but Johnson says recovery is possible with proper care. Unfortunately, he says the

Millions displaced by religious violence in 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. says millions of people were driven out of their homes because of their religious beliefs last year.

Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday released the State Department's 2 0 1 3 re p o r t o n re l i g i o u s p e r s e c u t i o n around the world.

It says that in conflict zones, mass displacement has become the norm.

Hundreds of thousands of minority Christians have fled Syria after thre e years of civil war, and this month Islamic militants have forced Iraqi Christians to leave Mosul or face execution.

The report also highlighted more than a million people being displaced in the Central African Republic amid an upsurge in Christian-Muslim violence.

I n t ro d u c i n g t h e re p o r t , K e r r y a l s o noted the continuing imprisonment of American pastor Saeed Abedini in Iran, and said the U.S. will continue to press for his release.

Ex-radio host pleads guilty in child porn probe

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A former host at a popular Christian radio station in western Michigan has pleaded guilty in a child pornography investigation.

John Balyo told a federal judge Tuesday that he photographed sex acts with a 12-year-old boy at a Kalamazoo County hotel. He pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation and possessing child pornography.

Balyo says he knew it was wrong.

The 35-year-old was a host at Christian radio station WCSG in Grand Rapids until his arrest in June at a Christian music festival in northern Michigan. His arrest was related to state charges of criminal sexual conduct. That case still is pending in Calhoun County.

Balyo faces a mandatory minimum of 15

years in federal prison, but his sentence could be longer.

Appeals court allows Sept. 11 steel cross display

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals court has rejected a lawsuit by an atheist group seeking to stop the display of a cross-shaped steel beam found among the World Trade Center's wreckage.

T h e 2 n d C i rc u i t C o u r t o f A p p e a l s upheld a federal judge's ruling last year that the decision to include the beam in the National September 11 Memorial & M u s e u m d i d n o t a d v a n c e re l i g i o n impermissibly.

American Atheists had sued the museum's operators in 2011 on constitutional grounds.

The group says it is disappointed in the decision and is considering whether to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The 17-foot-tall steel beam was found by rescue workers two days after the 2001 terror attacks destroyed the World Trade Center.

"Sex Tape"

ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Two stars out of four.

The high-concept comedies spawned by "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" need to start using birth control.

Judd Apatow's landmark film rightfully ushered in a new era in comedy, but it has also inspired a now sizable cottage industry of thin movies ("The Hangover," ''The Five-Year Engagement," ''Bad Teacher," ''Horrible Bosses," ''The Other Woman") with concepts boasting good titles but shallow stories.

Of these, only one ("The Five-Year Engagement") had Apatow's imprimatur. He and his cohorts have mostly moved on to telling stories about various seminal chapters of life — child birth ("Knocked Up"), high-school graduation ("Superbad"), young parenthood ("Neighbors"), 30s singledom ("Bridesmaids"), middle age ("This Is 40") — and many of these make up some of the best comedies of the last decade.

"Sex Tape," however, belongs to the former group and it marks a low point despite coming from several Apatow acolytes. It's directed by Jake Kasdan, a consulting producer on "Freaks and Geeks" who went on to direct "Bad Teacher." ''Sex Tape" reteams that film's lead duo, Jason Segel (a near constant in Apatow-land) and Cameron Diaz, the always game, wide-smiling muse for what's now been several generations of comedy.

A screwball that takes its genre literally, "Sex Tape" is about a West L.A. married couple, Annie (Diaz) and Jay (Segel), trying to reawaken their love life after years of marriage and two kids. Following failed attempts with double-knotted roller skates and new venues like the kitchen floor ("I can see my to-do list," says Annie), they settle on making a porn for themselves that tours through the positions of "The Joy of Sex." "Sex Tape" tries to somehow bridge the gap between the traditional romantic comedy and today's porn-addled digital world. It's a valiant effort, and there is something — though only very little — of Cary Grant's scampering in "Bringing Up Baby" to Segel's mishaps around the CEO's mansion. But "Sex Tape" doesn't sync.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "strong sexual content, nudity, language and some drug use."

RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes.

"Lucy"

So let's start with the enticing premise of Luc Besson's "Lucy," starring Scarlett Johansson: Human beings only use 10 percent of their brain capacity. Imagine what it would be like if we could access all of it?

Well, wow. It would be sort of like ... nothing new. Because, it turns out, in real life, humans pretty much DO use their whole brains.

DARN! Now, we could choose to be annoyed that Besson starts with a total myth. Or we could give him a pass — because, hey, the movie is fiction anyway. The more relevant question, though, is how much of your own brain you should use when watching "Lucy" — a truly bizarre if often entertaining romp through, hmm, well, neuroscience, biochemistry, anthropology and basically the entire human experience, in 90 minutes. (Oh, plus a really cool car chase.)

And here's another question: Just how much of his brain did Besson access when writing the dialogue? (That may sound nasty, but Mr. Besson, you're the one who got us thinking about cerebral capacity.) The director knows his way around a camera, and you can argue about the merits of the storyline. But the dialogue often sounds like it was produced by a primitive computer: Hammy and clunky.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for strong violence, disturbing images, and sexuality."

Woody Allen's late period has been defined by a quality you wouldn't have expected from the man who produced the inspired chaos of "Bananas" or the Fellini-esque carnival of "Stardust Memories": tidiness.

For years now, Allen's films have been light farces ("Midnight in Paris," ''Vicky Cristina Barcelona") or neatly structured parables ("Match Point," ''Blue Jasmine"). They breeze in innocuously in the summer, promising pleasant entertainment and not much more.

"Like drinking lemonade" is how Allen has described his escapist aims for his movies. His "Magic in the Moonlight," a romantic comedy bathed in the sunset glow of the French Riviera and starring two of the more effervescent faces in movies — Colin Firth and Emma Stone — is, no doubt, sweetly sugary — if ultimately flat — stuff.

The film begins in 1928 Berlin with the chaotic backstage life of a haughty, grouchy Chinese illusionist, Wei Ling Soo, played by the magician Stanley Crawford (Firth). It's a promising start: Here is Firth, in regal, oriental garb and long mustache, disparaging autographs as "for mental defectives."

More of this, and "Magic in the Moonlight" could have been a very funny movie. But Wei Ling Soo doesn't again perform, and instead the rest of the film feels oddly missing the jokes it seems built to convey. Crawford — a self-described "rational man" who believes in his art, not in actual magic — sets off to the South of France to unmask a medium, Sophie Baker (Stone), gaining renown for her prescient "mental impressions."

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "a brief suggestive comment, and smoking throughout."

RUNNING TIME: 100 minutes.

"Guardians of the Galaxy"

At the height of their powers, our overlords at Marvel have deigned to prove, like an emperor tolerating a court jester, that they do, in fact, have a sense of humor.

The Marvel universe, of course, isn't entirely lacking comedy, as we've seen in "Iron Man" and "The Avengers." But on the whole, the Marvel kingdom is built on an unshakable foundation of self-seriousness. The comic book studio seems to fear that if the solemnity of its fiction isn't diligently guarded, people might start questioning whether all these men in spandex merit quite so much attention.

Yet "Guardians of the Galaxy," a 3-D space opera about a ragtag crew of mercenaries, is Marvel's most irreverent film yet, and has a welcome, slightly self-mocking tone that dares to suggest intergalactic battles over orbs might actually be a tad silly.

This is all very much to the good, but the problem with "Guardians of the Galaxy," directed by James Gunn, is the weakness of the comedy it wears so proudly. It takes more than a soundtrack full of '70s tunes, a talking raccoon and a few gags about "Footloose" to be funny. It's "zany" in quotes.

As if demonstrating its tonal distance from Marvel's other planetary bodies, "Guardians of the Galaxy" takes place at the far reaches of space, where we find Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) skipping along on an abandoned planet. He removes his mask, presses play on a Walkman and does something normally sacrosanct in Marvel-land: He dances. Blaring is the irresistible 1974 hit "Come and Get Your Love" by Redbone, the first of many such old radio hits.

"The Hundred-Foot Journey"

Take one Oscar-winning British actress. Add an appealing supporting cast. Lather on the picturesque French countryside.

Sprinkle liberally with gorgeous food shots, from bubbling, spicy Indian delicacies to perfectly composed French plates of pigeon and truffles.

And then heap on a heavy serving of corn.

What is it about recent food movies — Jon Favreau's "Chef," and now Lasse Hallstrom's "The Hundred-Foot Journey" — that, despite their virtues, they have to be so darned corny, so dewy-eyed, with everything tied up in a feel-good bow at the end? It's as if all that great food on set had this tranquilizing effect, sending everyone off, sated and smiling, with great life lessons learned, into a rosy sunset.

That's not to say there isn't a lot going for "Journey" (as there was for the enjoyable "Chef"), an adaptation of the novel by Richard Morais about an Indian family that opens a restaurant in a French village. Besides the above-mentioned virtues, notably the always delightful Helen Mirren and the entertaining Indian actor Om Puri, it has the absurdly goodlooking couple of Manish Dayal, as a gifted young Indian chef, and Charlotte Le Bon, as the gorgeous sous-chef who teaches him the joys of haute cuisine (and not much more — this is a PG-rated movie).

The central relationship in Brown's life, though, was with his friend and partner, Bobby Byrd, who stuck with him even as Brown's ego pushed many away. As Byrd, Nelsan Ellis gives a thoughtful performance that, appropriately, grounds the film. (As Brown's longtime manager, Dan Akyroyd occasionally gets a little hammy.)

Many biopics of performers follow a grating formula: Tough youth, obstacles overcome, fame discovered, more obstacles, descent into old age or worse. Here, Tate and talented screenwriters Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth avoid this by jumping around in time, ditching chronology

for a thematic approach. It can get confusing, but it keeps us on our toes.

They also have Brown break the fourth wall at key moments. Alas, this isn't done early or frequently enough to feel coherent.

Perhaps there just wasn't time; even at 138 minutes, the film has to barrel though parts of Brown's long public life. (He died in 2006, at 73.)

Luckily, there was time for the scene where an older Brown bursts into a meeting at a building he owns, shooting at the ceiling with a rifle; he's annoyed someone used his private bathroom. Also memorable: the scene where Brown encounters a young Little Richard (Brandon Smith, highly entertaining), and Brown's amusingly incongruous appearance in a ski sweater in the 1965 Frankie Avalon film "Ski Party."

"Guardians of the Galaxy" worth a look

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH Of The Edge One of my great regrets had always been that I'd never seen a movie at a drive-in theatre. I decided early this year that during my "Summer of George" 2014 would be the one. I'd finally forsake air conditioning and take my love of movie-going to the great outdoors.

Since we are many generations removed from the 1950s heyday of the drive-in, my options were greatly limited. In fact, there are only two within what I would call realistic driving distances Belleville and Litchfield - both of which are named "The Skyview".

So when would I get around to it?

The unseasonably pleasant weather and the lure of Marvel's newest film gave me good incentive to make this

the weekend. And I was thrilled. " G u a rd i a n s o f t h e G a l a x y " is a riot. The characters were unknowns. Their group back-story was unfamiliar to many. The lead actor was untested. It should have been a nightmare, but the gamble paid off in a major way. Director James Gunn's decision to turn the C-level source material into a big budget B-movie was widely adored by both critics and fans and its $94 million box office set an August weekend record. The plot is supremely simple and almost altogether unimportant to the enjoyment of this show. It's a fun movie that looks like it was fun to make. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is an intergalactic thief who was once a sad child abducted from Earth in a beam of light. He now cruises remote planets at Star-Lord,

a masked ruffian scavenging for bounty while rockin' a sweet duster and a vintage Sony Walkman.

Quill's luck runs out when he's picked up by the authorities (including John C. Reilly and Glenn Close) and bundled into maximum security detention center with some real rough dudes.

After a blowout escape, Quill teams up with Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), a genetically modified raccoon, and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel), an anthropomorphic tree with limited vocabulary, to retake a mysterious orb containing a lot of powerful juju. They're joined by one wicked maniac, Dave Bautista's Drax, and Zoe Saldana's Gamora, a green-skinned assassin that seems to subsist by switching sides when her conscience demands it. Revenge

is a strong motivational force for these goofball guardians. Benicio Del Toro co-stars and Lee Pace is cast as the villain Ronan. Don't bother learning the names or stories because this comic seems like it was written in stereotype. Instead, enjoy the cheeky sarcasm and go-for-broke action. Pratt shines in his first starring role. He combines the slacker vibe he righteously honed on TV's Parks & Rec with the unbridled enthusiasm he put into his LEGO Movie character to come up with a hip take on Han Solo's roguishness. I loved it and think he'll crush it in next year's Jurassic Park sequel.

All in all, I was glad to kick in my ten bucks to the folks at Skyview Belleville because this is almost exactly what I'd always expected a drive-in movie would be like.

There were no teenage shenanigans; instead children played on a playground before the sun set. I munched a cheeseburger from the concession bungalow, chatted with other attendees about the merits of sitting in your car versus a lawn chair, and was tickled by the vintage advertisements that played during Intermission before the start of the bonus double feature, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It was a uniquely enjoyable experience, one I'm glad to finally have celebrated, and I can't wait to head up to Litchfield and see what they have to offer.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" runs 131 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and violence, and for some language. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

The Arts Washington University to host unique event For The Edge The sukkah is a small, temporary dwelling constructed each autumn for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. Its walls and roof embody a series of contradictions — open and closed, ancient and modern, ephemeral and rooted, highly structured and deeply idiosyncratic.

This fall, the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, in partnership with St. Louis Hillel at Washington University in St. Louis, will sponsor “Sukkah City STL 2014: Between Absence and Presence,” a national design competition and exhibition.

“The sukkah is a fascinating, paradoxical structure — a monument to impermanence,” said Jacqueline Ulin Levey, executive director of St. Louis Hillel, who is organizing the competition with Brian Newman, a project manager in the university's facilities department.

“Its temporary nature symbolizes the 40 years Jews spent wandering in the desert,” Levy said, “but it’s also a place of community, celebration and joy.”

Sukkah City STL builds on a previous competition, hosted at WUSTL in 2011, which drew more than 40 proposals from artists, architects and teams of designers from across the country.

“The original Sukkah City STL was inspired by a competition in New York in 2010,” Levey said. “In the years since, a handful of cities have sponsored similar events, but this remains a unique opportunity.

Sukkah City STL allows both young and established artists and designers to reimagine the sukkah through the lens of contemporary art and architecture.”

Newman notes that Talmudic law is at once fluid and specific about just what constitutes a sukkah. The structure must be temporary but sturdy enough to resist a strong wind. It must have three walls, but only two need be complete. It must include a roof, yet the roof must allow visitors to view the stars and sky.

“The effect of these constraints is to produce a building that is a tangle of contradictions,” Newman said. “When built, the structure is simultaneously new and old, timely and timeless, mobile and stable, familiar and unusual, comfortable and critical.

“The challenge for participants will not only be to build a sukkah that meets ancient legal criteria,” Newman said, “but also to explicitly examine and express an

issue relating to this year’s theme – the rich ambiguity between absence and presence – via structural ingenuity.”

Application and deadlines “Sukkah City STL 2014: Between Absence and Presence” is open to artists, architects and designers of all faiths and backgrounds, working in teams or as individuals.

The deadline for submissions is Aug. 22. A panel of architects, designers, critics, academics and religious thinkers then will select 10 designs for construction, with each project receiving a $1,000 honorarium to help defray building costs.

Completed Sukkahs will b e i n s t a l l e d o n Wa s h i n g t o n University’s Danforth Campus Oct. 5 and 6, and will be open to the public Oct. 7-13.

The Arts Artistic adventures A Taste of the Rep planned

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) and The Rep’s A-Team invite patrons to a special season kick-off with great food, lively entertainment and opportunities to explore the season, make subscription and single ticket purchases and register to win special prizes. A Taste of The Rep will take place outside on the lawn of the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, 130 Edgar Road (on the campus of Webster University), Webster Groves, from 4pm-8pm on Aug. 21.

The Rep’s A-Team is a young, diverse group of superheroes charged with audience development a n d c o m m u n i t y re l a t i o n s h i p building.

Food vendors at A Taste of The Rep include Bombay Food Junkies, My Big Fat Greek Truck, Pie Oh My! and CoolDelights. Food may be purchased individually at each vendor.

Melt Bar and Grilled lives up its billing

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Continuing on my "You Gotta Eat" road trip on the way to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum with my dad, our second stop after Indianapolis was in Independence, Ohio, outside of Cleveland at the famous Melt Bar and Grilled.

I say famous because this monster-of-thegrilled-cheese restaurant has been featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Man vs.

Food, my two biggest cuisine weaknesses on the tube.

Melt has five locations in Ohio, including: Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, Independence, Mentor and a new spot in Columbus. For my purposes I visited the location at 6700 Rockside Rd. in Independence because it was the closest one to my aunt and uncle's place in Kent where dad and I were staying. It was also the same location my cousin Brandon had gone during his college days in Cleveland and he had boasted of its awesomeness to me plenty.

It's hard to find the words to describe Melt, ridiculous might fit the bill. This is the most quirky, unique and messy joint I've visited yet, but that's not to say it isn't the bomb.

Melt opened in 2006 and has never looked back. Proprietor and executive chef Matt Fish had an insane idea to create a fusion place specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches and beer and this mad scientist has definitely created a monster. Melt boasts 40 craft beers rotating on tap to go with the crazy pairings and concoctions on the sandwiches.

The first time I saw Melt showcased on TV I was captivated by its insane ideas and I knew when I was in the area it would be a perfect stop for my column.

With sandwich names like: The Dude Abides, the Parmageddon, the Godmother and the Caribbean Jerk War Pig, it was safe to say it would be fun picking out my sandwich of choice.

My dad and my aunt and uncle were with me on my trip and I think they were kind of weary of the expedition as I recited reviews of meals online and told the legacy of the Melt Challenge, a monster grilled cheese featuring 13 cheeses, three slices of bread and a pile of fries and slaw. That's over five

pounds of food to be eaten in one sitting.

In actuality I think my trio of fellow patrons had heart burn setting in as soon as they stepped foot inside Melt.

I had carefully deliberated and plotted my order before we ever arrived. Since Melt could be considered the king of grilled cheese sandwiches, I chose to go with a selection fit for a king, the king of rock 'n roll that is. Elvis Presley's sandwich of choice was a peanut butter and banana sandwich and Melt just happens to have one on its menu.

Now Presley and I may not have much in common physically — besides when the king's waistline expanded in his older years of course — but we do share a common love of food and I had never tried one of these behemoths.

But first I of course had to pick out an appetizer to nibble on. I went with the Melt pierogi. It's a locally produced potato and onion pierogi, draped with sautéed onions, fresh napa vodka kraut, shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream.

With the sizes of the sandwiches, I expected the pierogi to be huge, but it wasn't. That's not to say it wasn't good.

The true winner of this appetizer was the sensational vodka kraut. It had a sweet taste that mixed well with the fried potato and onion pouch. I gobbled up all of the kraut before my dad had the opportunity to try it, but he was pleased with the pierogi itself.

The only complaint that we had was the fried shell on it became a little rubbery around the edges and hard to cut through, but the warm center had a delectable taste.

Finally my main meal arrived and quickly I was thankful that the pierogi order was small. This thing was oozing with ingredients. Consisting of caramelized banana, house-made peanut butter, cream cheese and candied peanuts on a giant Texas toast bun and served with mixed berry preserves, my heart skipped a beat when I saw it. (Actually I think it was just the plaque already forming on my arteries before I took a bite). Not to mention it was accompanied by hand-cut French fries and a dill pickle.

I quickly took a deep breath and dug in. It was heavenly. The peanut butter and cream cheese swirled together to form a rich-flavored paste for the large hunks of

banana and the whole peanuts, which were included in practically every bite.

I finally decided to add the jelly concoction and was wowed by the awesome sweetness it added to my prize sandwich.

What may have been the killer on this beast was the bread. It was huge and extremely filling.

I forged through this colossal meal and quickly came to the realization of what probably did in the king — too many peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I'll have to say that Presley had taste though, and he wouldn't have been disappointed with Melt's version of his favorite.

I'd be remiss not to mention the French fries, too. With as busy as Melt gets it's surprising how fresh the fries are there. It was easy to tell they are hand-cut daily and given much attention. They were absolutely delicious, unfortunately, I didn't eat many of them after the pierogi and my beastly sandwich.

Dad was stuffed also. He ordered the mushroom melt, with garlic mushrooms, caramel port onions, wilted arugula and provolone cheese on a giant Texas toast bun.

He may have been stuffed, but there were no complaints on his end either.

My aunt and uncle were the smartest of the bunch, splitting a sandwich. They went with the Cleveland cheese steak with braised pulled beef brisket, garlic mushrooms, sautéed onions and peppers, rosemary onion aioli and provolone cheese. They were more than satisfied with their choice, too.

As for those before-mentioned weirdnamed creations: The Dude Abides consists of homemade meatballs, fried mozzarella wedges, basil marinara, roasted garlic and provolone and romano cheeses. The Parmageddon is a take on words from the local town of Parma and is comprised of a potato and onion pierogi, fresh napa vodka kraut, sautéed onions and sharp cheddar on Texas toast. The Godmother consists of five-cheese lasagna with fresh fenneloregano pasta sheets, creamy tomato sauce, roasted red peppers, garlic wilted spinach and provolone and romano cheeses. Finally, the Caribbean Jerk War Pig is made up of jerk spiced pulled pork and seared pork belly, mango habenero chutney, caribbean slaw, fried sweet plantains and pepper-jack cheese.

One other sandwich that caught my attention was the Rising Sun, comprised of pan sautéed shrimp, kimchi pickle slaw, arugula, sweet thai chili aioli and muenster cheese.

I could keep breaking down the menu all day with all of the quirky finds at Melt, but check it out for yourself at www. meltbarandgrilled.com. There are plenty of cool appetizers and the build-your-ownburger portion of the menu also.

I of course had to check out the beers, too.

I went with a Brooklyn summer ale on draft, which was decent and my dad, uncle and I each ordered a bottle of Sprecher's hard root beer, which was fantastic. There are plenty more choices rotating on draft and in bottles for those on the craft beer kick.

As for the ambiance, it's as quirky as the food creations. There were lighted lawn ornaments displayed all over behind the bar from Halloween, Christmas and Easter and a large painted mural of celebrities on the wall near the entrance.

There was also the menu itself, with old album covers on one side and the Melt menu on the other. I got Simon and Garfunkel, my dad got Phil Collins, my aunt got Phoebe and my uncle got Culture Club.

While on quick glance it doesn't look like you can eat very healthy at Melt, on closer inspection you can. All sandwiches can be served with glutton free bread and there is also a nice salad section and the signature soups selections to be a little healthier than we were on our visit.

Price-wise, it came to $65.88, but that's for four people and including an appetizer and a few beers, so you can order cheaper for sure. The Melt pierogi appetizer was only $6 and my peanut butter and banana masterpiece was only $9.50 and I surely didn't walk away hungry.

To even get a little weirder, if you get a Melt tattoo you get 25 percent off for life.

Just use one of Melt's logos in a tattoo on your body and you're in, discounted food.

That sounds reasonable, reasonably insane.

I have to say if I ever start a "You Gotta Eat" Hall of Fame, Melt will be an inaugural member. None of us even contemplated dinner after our lunch at Melt that day and I thought about skipping breakfast the next morning. Melt will certainly cure the hungriest of bellies when you gotta eat.

‘All-Things Bacon’ and will feature vendors showcasing bacon-related treats from many of the area’s finest restaurants, including Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles, Café Affton, Joanie’s Pizzeria, Lucas Park Grille, Molly’s in Soulard, River City Casino & Hotel, Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shop, Steve’s Hot Dogs on The Hill and Tigin Irish Pub. Also returning is the second annual Bacon Battle competition and the second annual

‘Pardoning of the Pig’ by St. Louis County Executive Charley A. Dooley.

The highlight of the event is the creation of a World Record 1,000-pound, 100-footlong Hog Log (500 pounds of woven bacon wrapping 500 pounds of ground Italian sausage) cooked in a custom-built 102-foot-long grill. The grill will be built at 6 a.m. Aug. 15, by a team of 20 volunteers.

Mama Gusto’s Pizzeria 115 West Saint Louis St. Lebanon This is a great spot to grab an Italian meal. They have great pizza and the stromboli is amazing. Make sure to check out the deli attached to the restaurant.

Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant T h e p i z z a h e re i s a m a z i n g .

They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies.

During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers.

Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap?

1860’s Hardshell Café and Saloon 1860 S. 9th St., St. Louis Soulard A great place to get some Cajun and Creole food and have a good time to boot. It’s split into two sides, with the dining area on one end with great items like crab legs, gumbo, po’ boy sandwiches, red beans and rice and wonderful crab cakes. The other half of the building offers a full bar and live entertainment.

The menu is ridiculously huge and the portions are even bigger. Get your own plate of fries for a side, or a bucket of onion rings. It offers a creative sandwich portion of the menu and great southern-style dishes, try the Mac Daddy Burger.

You won’t go away hungry here, trust me.

Edwardsville This is a great place to grab a steak dinner, that is their signature dish. A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus, but be prepared to pay, it’s pretty expensive.

Johnson’s Corner Restaurant 2000 State St. Alton It’s a great neighborhood bar and restaurant. Sit at the bar and have a few drinks with a friendly staff and patrons. As for the food, get your hands on the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich ever and check out the monster onion rings, too.

Oriental Spoon 229 Sanatorium Edwardsville A Korean restaurant where you can’t go wrong. The Kimchi is very good as an appetizer and make sure to check out their bulgogi and bap selections. Make sure to ask your server about spiciness levels if you can’t handle hotness very well.

Schiappa’s Italian Restaurant 402 S. Madison St. Lebanon A quiet pizzeria that offers plenty more than just pizza. Make sure to check out the great calzones on the menu.

Wasabi Sushi Bar 100 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville If you’re into sushi then this is a good place to check out. Choose from a big selection of rolls, from the California and spicy tuna rolls to great choices like the Batman and the Caterpillar.
