Decorating beyond the red, white and blue

NEW YORK (AP) – From Memorial Day and Independence Day on through Labor Day, Americans are staging celebrations of patriotism. At summer ballgames and community events, we catch sight of billowing flags and take in the hum of the national anthem. At the height of summer, many of us look for ways to bring a bit of patriotic style or military flair into our homes. But how do you add a dash of Americana into your decor without giving your home the feel of a bed-and-breakfast in colonial Williamsburg? Interior designer Mallory Mathison says ramping up your in-house display of patriotism can be done in a chic, 21st-century way. “You can use that red, white and blue palette in ways that feel fresh and clean,” she says. “And it’s not the obvious, patriotic, Uncle Sam sort of thing.” But do tread carefully, says designer Lee Kleinhelter, owner of the Atlanta design store Pieces. “You can easily overdo it,” she says. So as you make decorating choices, “ask yourself whether it’s something you can easily live with every day.” FLYING THE FLAG “Red, white and blue is classic,” says designer Brian Patrick Flynn, creator of the design blog decordemon.com. But it’s important to choose the right shades and patterns. “To add touches of American style to my spaces, I often turn to textiles, particularly nautical prints, or even Ralph Lauren plaids reminiscent of Hamptons-style homes or the preppy Ivy League styles of the Northeast,” Flynn says. “In a master bedroom for a bachelor, I used Navy blue as the room’s base color, then added contrast with red, white and blue nautical pillows.” Mathison loves doing rooms in blue and white, then bringing in just one dash of red through an accessory, lamp or even a vase of red flowers. Or she’ll add cotton rugs in shades of red, white and blue over a hardwood floor. “Another way I use red, white and blue is with the design of boys’ rooms,” Flynn says. “To put my own twist on it, I’ll use a geometric wall covering featuring different shades of blue and white, then use deep reds in accents to add contrast.” This works well for kids of any age, he says: “It’s something a boy can grow into, mixing it up over the years.” Kleinhelter agrees, but points out that less is often more: “Don’t do the stars and the stripes,” she says. “Do just the stripes.” ONE BOLD PIECE Rather than threading patriotic style throughout a room, Kleinhelter says, “it’s great to do more like a Pop-art take on it by going bold with just one piece.”

Avoiding five mistakes even good homeowners make (ARA) - Have you ever accidentally left a candle burning unattended? Or left home without turning on the security system? You probably made a mental note to yourself to not do it again, but otherwise didn’t think much about it. But next time, you might not get so lucky. A simple “uh oh” could lead to thousands of dollars in damage to your home. “We recommend homeowners adopt a mindset of thinking about the consequences of things, of what could go wrong,” says Dr. Tim Reinhold, senior vice president of research and chief engineer for the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Here are five tips to avoid common homeowner mistakes: Tip 1: Clean out the filter on your clothes dryer Why? Fire. Those wads of lint that get caught in your dryer’s filter can pose a major fire hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that dryers cause more than 15,000 fires a year. Your strategy: Be sure to completely empty the lint trap every time you use your dryer. Also, make sure your dryer ducts are metal, since they’re less likely to sag and allow lint to build up. Tip 2: Trim tree branches that hang close to your home Why? Roof or other property damage. A storm or high winds could sweep through your neighborhood and knock those branches onto your roof, causing serious damage. Your strategy: Consult an arborist or tree surgeon about any trees in your yard that might present a hazard. Tip 3: Don’t put cardboard boxes from recent big-ticket purchases out on the curb with the garbage Why? Theft. By placing boxes in a visible location, you’re sending a signal to burglars that you have valuable items in your home. Your strategy: Cut boxes up and put them into the garbage or recycling bin. Tip 4: Make your house look occupied when you’re on vacation Why? Theft. An empty home can be an easy target for thieves. Your strategy. Have your mail and newspaper deliveries suspended or have a trusted neighbor retrieve and safeguard them until your return. “Not only do piles of mail signal that a house is vacant, but thieves can sift through letters to steal your identity,” says Joe Vahey, vice president at Erie Insurance. “You also may want to arrange for someone to maintain your lawn if you’ll be gone for more than a few days, and con-

Check appliance water hoses Why: Water damage. Hoses for washers and refrigerators wear out and need to be replaced before they spring a leak. The water supply line to the icemaker can also be a water leak waiting to happen. Your strategy: Replace washing machine hoses every five years. If you see the plastic line along the back of the refrigerator becoming discolored (yellow or brown), have an appliance repair expert check it out. Despite your best efforts to properly maintain and protect your home, accidents

and mishaps still happen, which is why it’s also important to know what your homeowners insurance does, and doesn’t, cover. For example, no homeowners insurance will cover flood damage from natural disasters, so you may want to seek federal flood insurance if you live in an area prone to flooding. In addition, check to see if yours is a guaranteed replacement cost policy, which would pay to rebuild your home if it’s severely damaged or destroyed. While aesthetics often take precedence when settling into a “new-toyou” home, it’s important for homeowners and renters alike to complete a safety check of their abode to reduce the risk of unintentional injuries. One of the greatest hazards in a home that usually is the furthest from the mind is fire. But, it’s one of the easiest to address. “There is an urgent need to educate families about fire safety,” says Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “Fire and burns remain a leading cause of unintentional injury and death for children, particularly those under the age of 5. Replacing older smoke alarms is a simple way for parents to help protect their families.”

More than two-thirds of residential fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-working alarms according to the National Fire Protection Association. One in four families with homes built prior to 2002 is at risk due to aging (10 or more years old) smoke alarms, according to a recent survey from Kidde. Fire experts recommend replacing alarms every 10 years as older smoke alarms may not operate efficiently and often cause nuisance alarms. By the time a smoke alarm is 10 years old, it has a 30 percent chance of not alarming due to age-related factors such as accumulated dust, insects and airborne contaminants, according to a Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center study. If you don’t know how old your smoke alarms are, or if you know they were installed more than 10 years ago, it’s replacement time.

Additionally, the survey found that most American families are underprotected when it comes to fire safety. Sixty-seven percent of respondents have four or fewer smoke alarms in their homes, but the average U.S. single-family home should have at least five alarms. When replacing your home’s alarms every 10 years, look for smoke alarms with a 10-year sealed lithium battery that will keep your alarms powered for a decade. The alarm will never need its battery replaced during its useful life. Or, select a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, which offers a voice warning and uses the latest technology to help minimize nuisance alarms that often occur when cooking. As you prioritize your move-in todo list, remember that an ounce of prevention today could save a life tomorrow.

Amy Hoak of MarketWatch states, “Homes located within walking distance of amenities such as schools, parks and shopping aren’t only more convenient for their owners, often they’re also worth more than homes in neighborhoods where driving is the rule.” Consider your lifestyle when you choose a location. Spending more to live within strolling distance of your favorite shops and restaurants is only valuable if you’ll take advantage of that proximity. BankRate.com offers a handy tool to help predict your monthly mortgage payments in different communities. 2. Consider your options for purchasing a home. Building a new home gives you greater control over style and finishes, though your move-in date will depend on the construction schedule. Newer existing homes will likely require fewer updates than an older home, but may be priced at a premium. If you are shopping for a starter home, consider your plans for the future. A smaller house may require less home maintenance and upkeep, but if you are looking for a larger long term investment and a place to grow and raise a family, opting for more space from the get-go may make the most sense. 3. Whatever the condition or age of the home you purchase, there’s always the chance you’ll want to make some changes, such as renovating a bathroom or upgrading your kitchen, or remodeling parts of the home to accommodate an expanding family. Try to anticipate and factor these costs into your total budget before purchasing a home.

KITCHENS AND DINING AREAS “A kitchen is a really great place to do red, white and blue and still have it looking chic,” says Mathison. “It’s a small investment to get some pretty blue and white WilliamsSonoma towels,” then mix in cookware and utensils in red and white. She also finds patriotic style perfect for outdoor entertaining. “Outdoors,” she says, you can “use a red and white table cloth with blue and white transferware dishes.” Because entertaining items aren’t on display year-round,

you can have fun going a bit further with a particular theme. RUSTIC AMERICANA AND VINTAGE STYLE “Classic farmhouse style is another common way of bringing American style into a space, particularly Americana,” says Flynn. “Rustic textures and reclaimed signage are a great way to warm up a space with American flair.
