Edwardsville's Smith spreading his wings Local artist's work appears in Chicago

B

arbershop probably have no idea that while they’re getting their hair cut, artist and owner of Blackdog Creative Kerry Smith is upstairs working away in his studio.

He has been in the space above the barber shop for over 13 years. He uses it as his art studio and the office for Blackdog Creative, his design firm.

Kerry’s work has been getting national attention recently.

“About a year ago, I was talked into doing some juried shows,” he said. “I had never done that before, but I decided to go ahead and try it. I got into two in Chicago and one in Kansans City.”

Most recently, he said, “People I know in Chicago wanted to carry my work.”

The store, Rider for Live, in the Loop, was featured in the July 2016 issue of InStyle magazine. Smith’s work is visible in the picture that illustrates the story about spending a weekend in Chicago.

In his role as the owner of Blackdog Creative, Smith has done branding for several businesses, including some in the area.

He did the branding for The Gingham Buffalo and is currently working on the branding for Where They Roam, the teen and children's store that the owners of The Gingham Buffalo is opening. He did the branding for Porter ’s Steakhouse in Collinsville, and he is working with Pfund Construction on the Metcalf Building.

In his role as a fine artist, Smith is working on a series of painting inspired by album art. “A few years ago, I got into dog paintings,” he said, “but I didn’t really feel like I’d found my niche. A year ago in February, Beck won the Grammy, and that inspired me to do something different. It turned into the series called Off the Record.”

The paintings combine several of his passions, he said.

“My love for album art, graphic design and fine art – it’s all combined,” he said.

“They’ve been well received,” he said of the paintings in the series. “I really feel it’s my niche. Different genres work for different artists, and this was an opportunity to expand into different genres.”

Smith said he doesn’t think he’ll get bored with the series.

“Joseph Albers did a series of paintings called Homage to a Square. All he painted for 30 years was a square. It really amazed me, that simple approach to painting.”

do now.”

Smith said he wants the paintings to have a childlike spontaneity. “I try to go back to that simplicity and not overthink it. It’s not easy to capture this spontaneity.” He turns the paintings upside down to work on them. “I want to capture that childlike innocence. That’s not easy to do as we get older. When I did them right side up, they got too perfect.

Smith starts a painting by researching the album’s performer if he doesn’t already know a lot about them. He tries to find the original record label and refer to it if he can. He tries to find what label the album was released on and find visual references. “I don’t want it to be a verbatim interpretation,” he said, but having the research helps him create the art.

He tries to have a variety of artists, he said. “Some I really, really like already, and some I’m trying to be adventurous and try new ones.” Inspiration can come from a variety of sources. “Bowie’s death inspired me to do many pieces on him.”

The first works in the series used black paint on a white background, some with color accents. Now, he is starting to work with more color.

Smith does not have any shows planned in the near future. “I wanted to work without the deadline of a show,” he said. “This is the most I’ve ever painted. I’m so interested in this series. That’s what keeps me going as a painter. I’ve enjoyed seeing it evolve.”

Smith is in talks with a gallery in New Orleans to show his work. He visited the city recently to talk to galleries. “I beat the street,” he said. “I walked into galleries for around two days. You have to have thick skin.” He is targeting Nashville and Memphis now.

In addition to creating art, Smith contributes in other ways to the art scene in town. He is a member of the Gogh-Getters, a group of four who curate shows at Sacred Grounds and hold openings for the artists whose work is shown.

“When the Edwardsville Art Center left downtown, there was no art in town,” he said.

“We tried to capture that vibe.”

He said the group originally started with artists they knew and liked. “Then we started using newer artists,” he said.

“I love what we have here in Edwardsville,” Smith said.

“It’s such a progressive scene.

I really want to create art here and send it out to the world.”

Smith credits his family for supporting him in his pursuit of art. “My mom and my aunt were really great painters and my grandma also. As a kid, I was just fascinated by them.

I remember them putting my work on the fridge and the feeling of acceptance. As an artist, you’re always looking to get your work accepted. It’s the same feeling as when they put my work on the fridge.”

People People planner Show U St. Louis College Festival set

The St. Louis Regional Chamber will host its first annual Show U St. Louis College Festival for the region’s college students on Saturday, August 27 from 10:00 a.m.2:00 p.m. at Poelker and Kaufman Parks east of Soldiers’ Memorial in downtown St. Louis.

This free event will be an opportunity for St. Louis area college students, particularly those new to St. Louis, to learn more about the many activities, cultural institutions, restaurants, neighborhoods, and nonprofits that make the region a great place not only to go to school but also to live, work, and play after graduation.

Show U St. Louis is part of the St. Louis Regional Chamber’s focus on attracting and retaining collegeeducated young people who are the region’s next generation of talented workers. “Show U St. Louis will be a big welcome party with a purpose,” says Greg Laposa, Vice President Education Strategies at the Regional Chamber.

“We kept hearing from students at Washington University, St. Louis University, Webster, and other schools that once they got off campus and got to know St. Louis a little better, they loved it. We want to make sure they get that chance to know our region. The festival is a snapshot of what is available in terms of career opportunities, places to live, and ways to have fun and give back to the community.”

The festival will be open to all students with a college ID from one of the region’s 47 two- and four-year colleges and universities.

It will also feature live local performances by hip hop artist Mvstermind, blues band Roland Johnson & Soul Endeavor, electronic dance music artist ICE and DJ Sinamin.

“Show U St. Louis will let college students have a great time and meet other students from around the region before they get deep into their studies,” says Laposa.

The Chamber is still accepting applications from regional attractions and organizations interested in participating in the festival.

Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary.

To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-squarefoot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway.

Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017.

Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between.

As the road meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous motes. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road.

Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis.

Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west.

Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 Park-In Theatre. Artifacts include neon signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer.

Route 66 opened on Nov. 11, 1926, as the major highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants west to find a new life.

It carried military transports

through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California. Route 66 bore witness to the rise of the car culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps. By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete.

The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that.

Although Route 66 is long gone, relics of it still remain across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an adventure and mom-and-pop diners and motels ruled the road.

People A day's worth of history awaits

C

ivil War history buffs – and even those with a passing interest – don't need to travel far to enjoy a hands on experience.

Alton offers a good half day's worth of sites to take in covering a number of aspects of the War Between the States.

A good place to start a tour is Lincoln-Douglas Square on Broadway in downtown.

Here is a life-size sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A Douglas as they would have looked during their 15th and final debate in October, 1858.

An estimated crowd of 6,000 turned out that day to hear the candidates for U.S. Senate discuss their qualifications and agendas.

Douglas went on to win the Senate seat, but Lincoln gained a national reputation during the campaign and would be elected president in 1860.

That presidential election would have a grave impact on our nation's history as it led to succession and, ultimately the Civil War. Next up should be the remains of the Alton Military Prison on William Street, just off Broadway.

All that remains of the structure that once housed Confederate prisoners of war is a corner structure that has been moved about 400 feet from its original location.

The first prisoners arrived on Feb. 9, 1862, by steamboat.

On Feb. 18, 1864, the prison reached its high water mark with 1,757 individuals housed within its walls.

The last of those prisoners leave the facility on June 20, 1865, after the war had ended.

Another historic date at the prison is Oct. 15, 1862. That's the day Henry Farmer arrived. He was infected with smallpox and later died. The first of many deaths from the disease.

In fact, a hospital was constructed on an island in the Mississippi River to care for Confederate soldiers suffering from smallpox.

Those prisoners were shipped the island and dozens died.

A marker listing the victims of the disease has been erected and should be the next stop on your tour.

Simply cross the Clark Bridge and take the first right, heading back to toward the remnant of the original Lock and Dam No. 26.

The marker tells a sad tale from a tragic time.

Take the bridge back to Alton and turn right onto Broadway.

From there, turn left onto Pearl Street – at Fast Eddie's Bon Air. The Alton National Cemetery is located just a few blocks up Pearl Street.

The art-deco style entrance makes the cemetery standout and immediately inside the gate is the veterans' plot, which includes the graves of 204 Union soldiers.

Further into the cemetery is an artillery piece that once overlooked the veterans' plot from a better

angle.

The piece was mounted on its stone pedestal in 1890 and serves as a tribute to the deceased Union soldiers.

The Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument is also located in the Alton National Cemetery.

Return to Broadway and make a right turn onto State Street.

Travel up State and turn left onto Rozier Street to reach the Confederate Cemetery.

This burial ground is the final resting place for numerous soldiers,

many of which were prisoners of war.

A stone obelisk towers over the cemetery and the names of the hundred of soldiers buried there are remembered on plaques at its base.

The cemetery is off the beaten path and has a certain dignity about it, even though it served as a cow pasture before the monument was erected in 1909.

Turn left back onto State Street then right onto Homer Adams Parkway.

Then it's right onto Washington Avenue and a left on College Avenue.

The last stop on the tour is in Upper Alton, site of the Old Rock House, which served as a station on the Underground Railroad.

The Old Rock House is located on College Avenue, near the SIU Dental School.

Escaped slaves, making their way north, would take shelter in the Old Rock House, one of a handful of Underground Railroad sites in the Alton/Godfrey area.

And while there are no reminders, Upper Alton was once referred to as Pie Town as women who lived their would bake pies for Union soldiers camped in the area.

A gas station named Pie Town Zephyr once stood on the corner of College Avenue and Washington Avenue.

Those sites should give you at least a taste of life during the Civil War era.

Religion Nun crowdfunds to pay off $12K student loan debt

CLIFTON, N.J. (AP) — An aspiring nun who was told she couldn't enter a convent until her student loan debt was paid off has used an online appeal to get the money.

Alida Taylor, 28, was accepted to join the Sisters of Life in New York City in September.

The Clifton, New Jersey, woman started a GoFundMe page late last month, hoping to get $12,000 to pay down her student loans. She surpassed her goal Thursday, raising more than $22,000.

In an update on the crowdfunding page, Taylor said the extra money will be used for a vocation fund for Casa Guadalupe, a house of prayer and discernment for Catholic women, where Taylor is currently staying.

Multiple attempts to reach Taylor were unsuccessful. But she told WCBS in New York that "The Lord when it's his will, he always provides, and I just trust him."

Officials say most Catholic religious orders ask people to delay applications until they have repaid debt.

After graduating from college in 2010 with a degree in fashion, Taylor moved to New York and got a job making costumes for Broadway shows. She said she enjoyed her life, but felt something was missing.

"When I moved to the city I had all these desires. I wanted to have a career, a family, and marriage, but your heart begins to shift," she said.

The Sisters of Life invited Taylor to attend a "Come and See" retreat with them so she could learn more about the order, and she eventually decided to move to New Jersey and at Casa Guadalupe.

It was there that she then decided her calling in life was to join the convent.

mosques and churches in a bid to reduce noise for its 20 million residents long used to lusty hymn-singing, honking horns and boom boxes that rattle the foundations of homes.

The state government of Lagos is on a mission to make the seaside city free of noise pollution by 2020.

"It's a great menace," said Adebola Shabi, general manager of Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency.

"Studies have shown that noise levels affect the amount of violence and affect our health."

The agency has shut down more than 70 churches and 20 mosques this year as well as a dozen pubs, hotels and clubs, he said.

Authorities act on complaints from neighbors, first gathering stakeholders to discuss noise limits.

If the din continues, the establishment is closed.

But many people are afraid to lodge complaints, according to several people interviewed by The Associated Press.

"I have a church and mosque on my street and they're in competition to see who can be louder," said sculptor Charlie Chukwu. "When the Muslims bought a small speaker, the Christians bought an even bigger one."

Ramadan, which ended earlier this month, he's awakened at 3 a.m. by calls to prayer, while his nights are raucous with Christian hymns.

He has not made an official complaint. "If you call the authorities, then you are seen as the anti-Christ, against religion, and you become the enemy on the street," Chukwu said.

Receptionist Dora Ugu said the foundations of her home shake when her neighbor turns on his boom box.

"Even when the power goes out, as it frequently does, he will get out of bed to put on his generator and then it's boom, boom, boom," she said. It's particularly upsetting for a neighbor who has a small baby.

When they complained to the man, he cursed and scared them. So the two women have not filed a complaint.

Noise levels of 97 decibels have been registered in residential neighborhoods where the limits are supposed to be 55 decibels by day and 45 at night, said environmental protection official Shabi.

In commercial areas the limits are 90 decibels by day and 80 at night, and in mixed areas 65 decibels by day and 55 at night, he said.

"When your noise exceeds these limits it becomes noise pollution, and we will shut you down," he said firmly.

A touch of humor invades "Star Trek Beyond"

By JAKE COYLE Associated Press In the previous "Star Trek" installment, Spock cried. In the latest, "Star Trek Beyond," he laughs.

And not just a little snicker, either, but a belly-full one. What bold explorations into the farthest reaches of the galaxy hold for Spock no one knows. A sigh? A hiccup?

"Star Trek Beyond," like most of the rebooted properties flying around our movie theaters, delights in nostalgically resurrecting iconic characters and tweaking them anew. The balance is a delicate one, as seen in the pre-release debate around this film revealing Sulu (John Cho but formerly played by LGBT icon George Takei) as gay.

The scene in question turns out to be a mere moment, lightly handled, showing Sulu greeting his same-sex partner and their daughter after a long mission. It's all expressed with just a few arms tenderly draped across shoulders. And it's the kind of welcome touch that director Justin Lin, the "Fast & Furious" veteran who takes over

for J.J. Abrams, has brought to this pleasingly episode-like installment.

The opening scene, fittingly, plays with a smaller scale. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), on a diplomatic mission, appeals to a snarling beast looming above him in a crowded amphitheater.

Enraged at Kirk's offer, the alien beast hurtles down upon him, only to turn out to be no more monstrous than a feisty bulldog.

The film finds a bored Enterprise finishing up a five-year tour in deep space. The (albeit brief) change of pace is immediately appreciated.

The last two beefed-up "Star Trek" movies, as if overcompensating for decades of Trekkie nerddome, threatened to make the once brainy "Star Trek" less distinct from other mega-sized sci-fi adventures â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just another clothesline of CGI set pieces strung together.

Like its recent predecessors, "Star Trek Beyond" is mostly an assortment of effects-heavy scenes with bits of talking in between. But unlike the previous film, 2013's bloated "Star Trek Into Darkness," not everything is quite so much of a life-and-death issue (the exhausting de facto pitch

of today's summer blockbuster).

The Starship Enterprise, led by Captain Kirk (Chris Pine, looking more natural in the role), is lured through a nebula where a would-be rescue mission turns into a trap set by the villain Krall, whose spectacular army of mechanical drones ("bees" he calls them) attack in an overwhelming swarm. In a galactic blitz, the Enterprise is torn to shreds and crashes down on a rocky planet where the ship's scattered crew tries to gather, survive and understand Krall's motives. A local becomes an essential guide for them: Jaylah (a nimble Sofia Boutella), a pale loner with black streaks running down her face who helps the crew discover the Federation's history on the planet.

The backstory, though, never quite gets filled out, and the plot serves as little more than a mechanism to test the efficient camaraderie of the Enterprise crew. Among them: Zoe Saldana's Uhura, Simon Pegg's Scotty, Karl Urban's Bones and Chekov, played by the late Anton Yelchin, a fine actor who's disappointing underused here. They're an entertaining enough bunch meandering around, and screenwriters Doug

Jung and Pegg (who, as the writer of "Spaced," knows plenty about the intersection of comedy and science fiction) have injected some humor to the proceedings.

The heart of the film, though, like the previous two, is the bromance between Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock. They're Felix and Oscar in outer space, and still the highlight of this batch of "Star Trek" films.

It's only late in the film that the alien mask is pulled away revealing the actor underneath Krall: Idris Elba. For those who didn't place his baritone earlier, the reveal comes as a disappointment.

It should be a crime in deep space, as it is on Earth, to shroud such a tremendous force behind mountains of extraterrestrial makeup. But I suppose had Elba been an unadorned baddie all along, the Enterprise might really have finally met its match.

"Star Trek Beyond," a Paramount Pictures release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi action and violence." Running time: 122 minutes.

Two and a half stars out of four.

Nothing wrong with the new "Ghostbusters" film

Sony has ramped up for the release of their "Ghostbusters" reboot this weekend by getting used to the idea that all publicity is good publicity.

Since its announcement more than a year ago, the Internet has been full of more than its usual share of trolls trying to do harm to the picture before it even got out of the gate.

"It can't be as good as the original."

"It surely can't be funny without a male lead in the cast." "How can this travesty be allowed to exist?" Well, get over yourselves, anonymous Web posters. There's nothing wrong with the new "Ghostbusters" movie. It's not exceptionally good or bad, and some of the jokes fail to land, but the movie is a fun experience. What more could you really ask for from a

show like this than to be entertained?

Treading where Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ivan Reitman legendarily led the 1984 box office is a bevy of very successful comediennes, many of whom have been best catapulted into the public consciousness by the institution of "SNL", the comedy mill that turned out some of the most memorable "Ghostbusters" of all. Frequent host, sitcom star, and celebrated comedy actress Melissa McCarthy fronts the group as physicist Abby Yates who rejoins forces with her old partner, a reborn skeptic of the paranormal, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wi i g ) a n d w h a c k y e n g i n e e r named Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) to begin investigating sightings around New York City of unexplainable power surges and creepy phantoms. They're joined

by an early encounter victim, eager subway clerk Patty Tolan ("SNL" breakout Leslie Jones). The eventual plot of the movie, which I again say is irrelevant to one's enjoyment of the way it comes off, concerns the Ghostbusters stopping a weirdo (Neil Casey) from opening some sort of portal to another plane of existence that lies beneath a fancy old hotel. His intentions are not clear, but his actions are certainly dastardly enough to label him as the black hat villain.

As far as the comedy goes, "Ghostbusters" hits as often as it misses. After the first two gags in the movie had me literally gagging, I was quickly afraid that this was going to be more of a train wreck than, say, last year's "Trainwreck".

Hemsworth enters to interview for a receptionist job. The buff actor clearly has a comic timing of his own because he nails this role as a dim bulb pretty boy even more than his small part in last summer's remake of "Vacation". In addition to the subdued Hemsworth, all of the former Ghostbusters (including Murray, Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, and even the late Harold Ramis) cameo in bit parts that add to the fun. Murray was cast as a well-dressed debunker aimed at thwarting Abby's work, but I particularly enjoyed Aykroyd's cranky cabbie that refuses to drive all the way from lower Manhattan to Chinatown. There was substantial disagreement between forecasters as to how well the movie would perform in terms of ticket sales.

giving a modest number that could be easily attained. Other industry insider threw similar soft targets up. While "Ghostbusters" did open to more than $45 million during its opening weekend, that was in second place behind the sophomore efforts of last week's "The Secret Life of Pets", which suffered more than a fifty percent drop. The live action comedy isn't dead, but it requires a lot more effort these days for the mainstream to collectively believe in them. Director Paul Feig and McCarthy especially as no strangers to this idea. That's why the hopeful, sequel-oriented bumper scene at the end of the credits is so well crafted.

Sneaky, sneaky.

"Ghostbusters" runs 116 minutes and is rated PG-13 for supernatural action and some crude humor. I give this film two stars out of four.

The Arts Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis announces St. Louis Arts Awards Honorees For The Edge The Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis (A&E) proudly announces the 2017 St. Louis Arts Awards honorees. Celebrating its 26th year, the St. Louis Arts Awards is the area’s preeminent event honoring individuals, organizations and businesses that achieve a legacy of artistic excellence and enrich St. Louis’ arts and cultural community.

The 2017 St. Louis Arts Awards will be held Monday, January 23 at the Chase Park Plaza beginning with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and awards at 7 p.m. Susan Block, founder of the Designing Block, and John Russell, Senior Vice President at Stifel Financial Corporation, will co-chair this year’s event. Proceeds from the event benefit the Arts and Education Council’s annual campaign which provides financial support, professional development, incubator space and collaborative opportunities for nearly 70 arts and arts education organizations throughout the 16-county, bi-state region. World Wide Technology, Inc. and the Steward Family Foundation have generously renewed their support as Presenting Sponsors of the twenty-sixth annual event, while Emerson has renewed its commitment as Principal Sponsor.

Lifetime Achievement in the Arts – Steven Woolf, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis Steven Woolf has been with The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis (The Rep) for nearly 35 years, starting in 1982 as the managing director and becoming artistic director in 1986. Woolf has also done extensive work in New York, serving as the project producer on the original productions of The Robber Bridegroom and The Red Blue-Grass Western Flyer Show and was co-producer of Tom Griffin’s Workers. Off-Off-Broadway, Woolf directed Impulse and Chicken Soup and worked on The Acting Company’s Broadway Season at the Billy Rose Theatre. In 2011, Woolf received the “Kevin Kline Award for Outstanding Direction” for his work on The Rep’s production of Red, and his production of Awake and Sing! at The New Jewish Theatre tied with Red for the “Kevin Kline Award for Best Production of a Play.” In addition to his work with The Rep, Woolf has served as a panelist and an on-site evaluator for the theatre program for the National Endowment for the Arts and

Steven Woolf served on the advisory panel for the Regional Arts Commission and the ad hoc committees for program assistance and touring for the Missouri Arts Council. He served on the executive committee and the national negotiating committee for the League of Resident Theatres, as well as on the board of Missouri Citizens for the Arts, and he is a trustee of the IATSE Local #6 health fund. He has been on the faculty of the Drama Division of the Juilliard School under John Houseman and is adjunct faculty at Webster University, where he was one of the first to receive the University’s Declaration of Merit. Woolf has also served on the board of the Kevin Kline Awards.

Excellence in the Arts – Mike Isaacson, Theater Producer Mike Isaacson is artistic director and executive producer of The Muny, St. Louis’s legendary outdoor theatre. Isaacson is also a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer of Fun Home which was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won five, including Best Musical. Since being named executive producer of the Muny in 2010, Isaacson has worked to reinvent the institution, while still maintaining its tradition and connection to the community. After his first season, the St. Louis PostDispatch awarded him “Theatre Artist of the Year.” For each of the seven shows produced at the Muny during its two-month seasons, Mr. Isaacson insists that every show is its own unique gem with its own production team - not merely a cookie cutter version churned out by the Muny machine. With Mr. Isaacson at the helm, The Muny has expanded its community outreach and its education programs. He

has also implemented new, more efficient production processes and has teamed up with other local arts organizations to create new projects. During his 15 years at St. Louis's Fabulous Fox Theatre he was responsible for bringing more than 100 musicals and plays to our community, and was an active officer and producer in the Independent Presenters Network, a national organization of Broadway producers and presenters. Isaacson has also served on the Board of Governors, the Executive Committee and the Governance C o m m i t t e e o f T h e B ro a d w a y League and has devoted his career to theatre, producing more than 20 musicals, plays, revivals, national tours and London productions.

Excellence in the Arts – Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum Part of Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum was founded in 1881 as the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts and remains the oldest art museum west of the Mississippi River. The Museum contains impressive collections of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century European and American paintings, sculptures, prints, installations, and photographs. In the past nine years the Museum’s exhibit schedule has been international in scope, bringing influential artists to and developing groundbreaking scholarly exhibitions for the St. Louis community. In addition to its outstanding curatorial program, the Kemper's education and outreach programs have expanded to include record numbers of visits by area elementary and high schools and social service programs. Along

with such distinguished Modernist exhibits as Georges Braque and the Cubist Still Life, 1928–1945, in 2013, the Kemper's commitment to contemporary art and ideas is exemplified by recent surveys like To See Without Being Seen: Contemporary Art and Drone Warfare, in 2016, and earlier, Encountering the City: The Urban Experience in Contemporary Art, in 2014. Such diverse contemporary artists as Sharon Lockhart (20102011), Luis Camnitzer (2011), Elizabeth Peyton (2011), and Rashid Johnson (2013-2014) have also had major solo shows at the Kemper, bringing their challenging works in many mediums to the St. Louis region.

Art Educator of the Year – Harvey Lockhart, Riverview Gardens School District Harvey Lockhart has been an arts educator for over a decade and is currently the band director at Riverview Gardens High School and the performing arts coordinator for the Riverview Gardens School District. Since 2010, Lockhart has rebuilt the District’s music program into one of the best in North St. Louis. Lockhart revitalized the band program from 10 students to 60; re-established concert, marching and jazz bands; and built an inventory of more than 80 new and used instruments.

In 2015, Lockhart envisioned creating a community jazz big band for North County students and other underserved districts to serve and support talented high school musicians after the tragic events in Ferguson. With the help of jazz pianist Peter Martin and The Sheldon Arts Foundation, the North County Big Band (NCBB) was formed. Now in its second year, this collaborative big band is made up of some of the most talented and dedicated students from several St. Louis area high schools, including Central Visual and Performing Arts High School, Hazelwood Central High School, Normandy High School, Riverview Gardens High School and University City High School. Students rehearse on weekday evenings at The Sheldon’s concert hall with coaching provided by leading educators and musicians including Lockhart. Mr. Lockhart is committed to developing strong and intellectual young musicians and strives to equip the NCBB students with the necessary tools and experiences that will motivate them to be successful. Through Lockhart’s leadership, teaching ability and hard work, the North County Big Band has quickly become a positive factor in the lives of the students and community.

Arts Innovator – Pianos for People Pianos for People was established in December of 2012 as a service connecting unwanted pianos to individuals and families who could not otherwise afford one.

To date, Pianos for People has collected, restored, and delivered an average of one piano a week, for a total 140 pianos. In the fall of 2014, Pianos for People opened a teaching space on Cherokee Street to provide free piano lessons to the community. Pianos for People now offers group classes for a variety of ages, private lessons to advanced students, open rehearsal time for anyone to stop in and play, piano camps and community events - all for free. Pianos for People breaks down the financial barriers that

keep many families from providing music lessons for their children something that has been proven to increase IQ, creativity, critical thinking and focus among a long list of other essential skills for success. The free pianos bring music into homes, inspiring creativity and strengthening family bonds while free music lessons create a community of support and respect.

The Fin Inn Restaurant in Grafton

By BILL ROSEBERRY Of The Edge Recently my family got together for a dinner outing and after a short deliberation decided to take a trip to a staple in Grafton â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Fin Inn Restaurant.

The Fin Inn is a place I started visiting when I was a kid. It's a pretty cool spot, especially as a kid, ogling at the many fish inhabiting its four 2,000 gallon tanks. They do a good job of filling them with fish native to the Mississippi River, a great showpiece for the awesome little river town. Fin Inn is located at 1500 West Main St. in Grafton.

It originally opened in 1981 and has expanded since then and remained a popular restaurant for patrons to visit from all over the surrounding communities.

Kelly and I visited with my mom and dad, aunt and uncle, grandma and my cousin Brandon. It was actually the first time I had been there since I was a teenager. I was excited to return. I always remember the food being really good and the experience to be top notch.

Our waitress sat us up at two tables in the back of the restaurant.

Unfortunately, we weren't placed next to any fish, instead in front of two giant snapping turtles for our viewing pleasure. I wouldn't call them entertainers. I sat right next to the glass and watched as the mammoth reptile next to me never moved through my entire meal. My dad made an announcement at one point that the turtle in their tank at least moved his head to prove he was alive.

From a distance, I could see other tanks inhabited with gar, bass, catfish and other Mississippi natives. I'll admit it was still cool sitting that close to a giant snapper and studying his features. It's a nice

conversation piece for dinner for sure.

But looking at fish and turtles only goes so far, the real reason to visit a restaurant is the food and I was ready to see if Fin Inn could still live up to the hype of my childhood.

I started with an appetizer, going with an order of frog legs. Kelly got into the mix with an Eagles Nest Onion to share with everyone.

The fried onion petals had a good taste. They were served with a ranch dipping sauce. Brandon and Kelly seemed to really enjoy them and I of course pilfered a few bites.

I was however consumed with my frog legs. My eyes about popped from my head when they arrived.

They were huge. I wondered if these frogs were on steroids due to the

size of these legs. They were fried to a beautiful golden brown and when I dug in they were delicious.

I know the old saying when trying bizarre meats you've never had before, everyone says it tastes like chicken. But seriously, if you have never had frog legs, the texture is extremely similar to chicken and the taste is somewhat also. It does have a little bit more of what I would describe as a fishy taste, but it's different than eating fish or seafood.

At Fin Inn these frog legs were extremely meaty and the rich, thick breading added to the flavor. They were salty, but not overly done and good enough for a main course by their sheer size.

Of course I had to try more, as I

went with the pond catfish fritters as my main course. This was a go-to order for me as a kid and a favorite of my entire family. Kelly, mom and grandma all joined me in ordering the fritters.

They were cooked to the same golden brown perfection of the frog legs and just as delicious as I remember them as a kid. Nice fat chunks of catfish filled my plate and were very moist and fresh. Catfish is a favorite of mine when it comes to eating fish.

Mom, grandma and Kelly all agreed with my assessment, as they passed their stamps of approval also.

I also went with a dinner salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing, a side of baked beans and the two

accompanying hush puppies.

The salad dressing was a little weird, it was kind of thick which was intriguing for a vinaigrette, but the taste was fine. The beans were very good and I was stoked to get some hush puppies. I guess it was another ode to my childhood and I hadn't had one of these cornmeal fried balls of deliciousness for quite sometime. It was the finishing touches on a fine meal.

Brandon is not a fan of fish or seafood, so he ordered the country fried steak. That's the beauty of Fin Inn, you don't have to eat fish if you're not a fan. If you like looking at fish, but not eating them, or feel morbid for maybe eating that catfish's relative who is watching you chow down, there is plenty for everyone.

Fin Inn offers hamburgers, a turkey BLT, a grilled cheese on Texas toast, a hot dog, fried chicken and a 12 ounce ribeye for non-fish lovers, plus plenty more.

Some of the standouts I saw on the menu were: the turtle soup, the fried clams and popcorn shrimp on the appetizer menu, as well as the fried green beans. You also can't go wrong with the buffalo fish sandwich or the Alaskan whitefish sandwich. The candied yams on the side orders sounds pretty scrumptious also.

The other cool part about the Fin Inn are the surrounding shops, bars and site seeing opportunities available in Grafton once your done eating. Kelly, Brandon and I hung out for awhile after dinner, making for a fun day.

County Seat Cafe 316 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville The County Seat is a nice, cheap place to get a bite to eat with outstanding service. The food is good, not great, but you get large helpings and they are continuing to evolve what they do, trying out new quirky menu items for customers. Check out the peanut butter and jelly pancakes when they're available and the horseshoes are good. Big salads and sandwiches, too.

O'Connell's Pub 4652 Shaw Blvd.

St. Louis Cheap, simple and good. That's a good rundown of O'Connell's Pub in St. Louis. The burgers are tremendous.

They're huge and very succulent. It's just a great old-style Irish pub, with good beer selections and simple food made to perfection. Across the street from Shaw's Garden and not far from Forest Park, so there are great activities to follow if you visit.

Gilliganz Bar and Grill 7251 St. James Rd. Edwardsville This staple in Holiday Shores is a great place to grab a bite to eat. Check out the dog pizza, with chicken, tomatoes and onions and cooked in the dog sauce â&#x20AC;&#x201D; featuring buffalo and barbecue sauce mixed together â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it's delicious. There are plenty of other pizza and sandwich selections on the menu.

Mondays feature 40-cent wings after 8 p.m. Get the garlic parmesan wings. Be prepared to wait on Mondays though.

Tucanos Brazilian Grill 1520 S. 5th St. St. Charles Sensational. I almost don't have the words to describe this meat mecca. For $25 order Tucanos Famous Churrasco and get an infinity of grilled meats. Each table includes a stick with red at one end and green at the other. Green means go, red means stop. As long as you go green the grilled food keeps coming. Anything from turkey wrapped in bacon to prime rib to grilled pineapple to salmon to chicken hearts, it's amazing the stuff they will bring. Also hit the buffet and grab a salad, some fried bananas and some scrumptious fried cheese. I'd recommend going in a group. It's a lot of fun and you'll be there awhile.

Steve's Hot Dogs on The Hill 2131 Marconi Ave. St. Louis If you like hot dogs with a quirky twist, then this is the place for you. The creation of Steve Ewing, the lead singer for The Urge, this place is awesome. It's small and only open for lunch hours Monday through Saturday, but worth a visit.

The Gorilla Mac and Cheese Dog is awesome, comprised of a smoked Nathan's hot dog, topped with creamy mac and cheese, bacon and French fried onions. The Bacon Bacon Jamaican is great too, with two slices of bacon, pepper jack cheese, jerk seasoning, bell peppers and sweet chipotle sauce.

There are plenty of other quirky dogs there, too. There is now a second location in the Tower Grove neighborhood.

Gulf Shores Restaurant & Grill 215 Harvard Dr. Edwardsville Be prepared to wait when you visit this new hot spot in Edwardsville, but it's worth it. Make sure to check out the gator bites, they are fantastic. It's alligator meat fried in a corn meal breading. The catfish fillets are fried in the same corn meal breading and equally as good. There are also gator tacos and don't miss â&#x20AC;&#x153;Crabby Monday's Crab Leg Special.â&#x20AC;? A little pricey though.

The Saint Louis Zoo’s Young Zoo Friends invite you to sip cabernets for conservation at their summer 21-and-up event, Jammin’ at the Zoo presented by Macy’s.

O n We d n e s d a y, A u g u s t 2 4 , from 6 to 10 p.m., enjoy great live music while sampling your way through a variety of different wines from multiple wineries and a selection of brews from St. Louis microbreweries. Proceeds from the parties benefit the Zoo and its efforts to save endangered species at home and around the world.

2016 is shaping up to be a blockbuster year for Du Quoin State fairgoers.

State Fair Manager Kevin Gordon is pleased to announce the first of what will be many Du Quoin State Fair Grandstand announcements.

Fairgoers should prepare to party on the closing day of the Du Quoin State Fair. On Monday, September 5thSugar Raycomes to town to help southern Illinois celebrate Labor Day. The singer/songwriter/actor has a resume of top-10 hits, multiplatinum albums, and countless sold-out tours to his credit. The Fox to host the Octonauts

Peter Pan, along with Wendy, John and Michael (and of course Tinkerbell) will soon be flying onto the stage of the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts at McKendree University as Goshen Theatre Project presents â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peter Panâ&#x20AC;? August 4-6. Based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and featuring an unforgettable score by Morris "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and Betty Comden and Adolph Green, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peter Panâ&#x20AC;? is one of the most beloved and frequently performed family favorites of all time. The original 1954 Broadway production, starring Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook, earned Tony Awards for both stars. It was followed by NBC telecasts of it in 1955, 1956, and 1960 with the same stars, plus several rebroadcasts of the 1960 telecast. In 2014, the musical was broadcast on NBC featuring several new numbers, and starring Allison Williams and Christopher

Walken. The show has enjoyed several Broadway revivals -- in 1979 featured Sandy Duncan and the 1990â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s production featured Olympic gymnast Cathy Rigby in the role of Peter. This high-flying Tony Award-winning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years. With a large cast of 60, the production features many area youth as pirates, lost boys, Indians and mermaids.

ZFX is an internationally known company that has provided flying effects for Broadway shows and amateur productions including â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peter Pan,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mary Poppins,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Fiddler on the Roofâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wicked.â&#x20AC;?

What was just a wild dream of a few local educators became a reality with The Goshen Theatre Projectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first productionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;â&#x20AC;&#x153;Shrek: The Musicalâ&#x20AC;? that played at Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville for three sold-out performances in October, 2016. In December we presented the Wildeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Spectacular.

Auditions for â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peter Panâ&#x20AC;? were open to area youth entering 4rd grade to adults from many surrounding communities. As their name implies, they hope to provide a wide-range of theatre projects for all ages for Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Troy and all surrounding areas. We are hoping to expand our programs by adding more productions, camps

and workshops focusing on singing, dancing and acting. We are also planning â&#x20AC;&#x153;Goshen Kidsâ&#x20AC;? which will be a small group of talented middle and high school students who will have a large repertory of solo and ensemble numbers and would perform at community and civic events.

Every community music or theatre company must rely on individual and corporate donors to offer a wonderful theatre experience for the performers as well as the audience.

No theatre project no matter the size can function on just ticket sales. To make a musical like this happen, the

Friends of the Goshen Theatre Project has been started. This recognizes financial donations which are expenses for rental and royalty rights, for costume and theatre rental, set and prop construction, for programs and advertising and additional technical and musical support. There are several levels of membership.
