Feed the Need benefit concert planned in Alton 7th annual event to help Meals on Wheels For The Edge

C

ountry artists Rodney Atkins and Jana Kramer along with local favorite “The Harman Family” will be performing on Saturday, July 16 at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater for Senior Services Plus (SSP)’s 7th Annual Feed the Need benefit concert for Meals on Wheels.

Meals on Wheels is a program that allows low income and at-risk senior citizens to receive 33 percent of their daily nutrition and remain living in their own homes. Meals on Wheels seniors not only rely on SSP’s program for quality food but for social interaction and safety, and both are steadily decreasing.

Before the state budget crisis, SSP staff would deliver a warm meal daily, Monday through Friday, to the individuals in need. Now, only five frozen meals are being delivered once a week.

Associate Executive Director Theresa Collins has been on many delivery runs with the program and has seen the direct effects it has on people. She recalls a woman pleading for an extra slice of bread because the meals provided were her only meals being provided with

nothing else in addition to. Collins describes another delivery where she gave a recipient a plant donated from a church’s Easter service. The woman was overjoyed saying, “You don’t know how much this means to have another living thing in my home with me.”

“It was like a punch in the stomach,” Collins said. “It really brought back to reality the importance of that program. It’s more than just a meal.”

SSP’s Meals on Wheels program caters to 22 townships throughout Madison and St. Clair Counties. Over the past nine years, the program has provided 1 million meals, feeding over 6,000 homebound seniors. In the past year, 450 meals have been delivered daily.

“It’s my survival food,” is what William Bono of Alton says when describing the meals delivered to him by Meals on Wheels.

The annual Feed the Need concert is a way to bring the community together to help the local Meals on

Wheels program while enjoying great music. The cost of a general admission ticket is the equivalent to ten days of meal donations.

Ticket prices begin at $40 and individuals are able to purchase tickets online at www.metrotix.com, at the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, or at Senior Services Plus, located at 2603 North Rodgers Avenue in Alton. Meet and Greet tickets are also available for each artist for $50 exclusively at Senior Services Plus or by calling 618-465-3298.

Senior Services Plus is a non-profit United Way agency established to help enrich the lives of older adults through programs and services that encourage independent living and provide opportunities and resources to individuals as they age. SSP offers a wide variety of affordable services to all ages from fitness and travel to Meals on Wheels and homecare. LSAF seeks ways to support District 7 Foundation schedules dance on July 15

hen times are tough, you cut back on extras. While that’s been the situation that Edwardsville District 7 has been in for the past few years, the Lincoln School Alumni Foundation has been bridging the gap financially by providing funds to help the district continue to provide services and opportunities to its students that the school district otherwise can no longer afford.

The Lincoln School Alumni Foundation has provided funding for things like transportation of elementary children to the district’s summer reading program or funding for a seventh grader to participate in the annual seventh grade trip to Washington, D.C., who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend because his parents couldn’t afford the fee.

These are just a few of the many needs that the Lincoln School Alumni Foundation fills each year for students in District 7, but with more community involvement and support, this organization could do so much more to help District 7 students.

“Help us to help the District 7 students” is the message the foundation wants the community to know as it invites residents within District 7 to attend its upcoming annual fundraising event on July 15 in the Leclaire Room at Lewis and Clark Community College in Edwardsville.

Tickets for this casual event are $25 with all money raised benefiting the Edwardsville School District.

Herman Shaw, President of the Lincoln School Alumni Foundation, spoke passionately about why he continues to encourage the community to help the foundation whose primary goal is to help the District 7 kids.

“I went to school here. I was one of those kids that needed a lot. I was a poor person.

My academic skills were not very good but the Rotary and a few teachers – my coach, the principal – they helped me so much that I know I wouldn’t be here without them,” Shaw said as tears filled his eyes.

“Everything that I have done positive as an adult is a result of the support that I got in this school district when I was a young man so I know it’s important. It made me realize that you can make a difference in a child’s life. So that’s the reason this organization is doing this.”

The Lincoln School Alumni Foundation hosts an annual district-wide golf tournament in September and the dance in July as its major fundraising vehicles.

Shaw pointed out that some people may initially think, “Gee, I don’t like to dance so I won’t attend.” “Well, I don’t like to dance either, but it’s not the dance itself. It’s the opportunity to do something for our kids,” Shaw noted.

“And I think when people start thinking about our kids as being not only the ones that are in our households but all of the kids that are in this school district and the responsibility that we have to them is the

same as what we have with those in our households, then I think it’s not so difficult to give up $25 because there’s a reason and a rationale behind the giving.”

Edwardsville District 7 Superintendent Lynda Andre stressed the important role the foundation provides and how the district values the relationship with it. “Partially because they do so many different things,” Andre said.

She elaborated about the foundation’s contribution to the district’s technology fund which helped to install Polyvision whiteboards in every classroom as well as training for teachers. “The other thing I really appreciate is how you find specific needs that we can’t fill,” Andre noted.

“They’ve paid for after school tutoring before at the middle school when we had to stop that program because we couldn’t afford to have so many teachers there to work with kids individually.”

Andre also spoke about a more recent project that the foundation funded which was an idea Shaw had that involved transporting high school athletes to the elementary schools in the district’s northern area to conduct a series of after-school sports workshops. Shaw’s thoughts were that these District 7 students are many times limited in participating and experiencing activities that happen at the high school because they live in areas that require a 15 to 20 minute drive in to town. “It gave these students something to do in their community which the community appreciated, parents appreciated.... and you filled that need,” Andre said.

Andre added that last summer the foundation also did a summer outreach

program that provided transportation for students to attend the district’s summer reading program. “That is just something that we can’t do as a district because the transportation costs are not be reimbursed by the state. It’s negative in that fund,” Andre added. “But those students who need reading support and those parents have to be basically at home and still drive 15 to 20 miles each way if their children are going to get that support. The Lincoln School Alumni Foundation has been paying for that specific need to help kids have the equal opportunity so we really appreciate all those things.”

“We all are more than aware of the financial crunch on the school district,” Lincoln School Alumni Foundation Board Member Greg Mudge said. “And in a little way, this organization can plug some gaps.”

Both Mudge and Shaw were hopeful that residents in District 7 would support the foundation by attending the dance. “I’m hoping that we can find 300 people that will come out and sit around with the rest of us and have some fun for the evening, make that donation, have something to eat and have an opportunity to talk abut the importance of what we are doing which is trying to see to it that our kids have a little bit of something extra. That has always made Edwardsville a special place to be,” Shaw added. “Come out and help us help the kids.”

People People planner Museum celebrates Route 66 in St. Louis

On Nov. 11, 2016, Route 66 celebrates its 90th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the Missouri History Museum developed Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, a 6,000-square-foot exhibition that explores the local history of the world-famous highway.

Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis is open from June 25 through July 16, 2017.

Route 66 touched eight states and connected more than 100 cities from Chicago to Los Angeles. St. Louis was the largest city in between. As the road meandered through the city, it passed by a number of stops that were unique to St. Louis – from popular restaurants to scandalous motes. Route 66: Main Street through St. Louis tells St. Louis' distinctive story on the Mother Road.

Visitors will get their kicks learning about the motels, custard stands and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Route 66 through St. Louis wound its way from the bridges through

downtown streets and depending on the year, provided travelers with several options for navigating through the city to the county and west.

Locals will recognize some of the iconic places they still visit today such as Ted Drewes, Crown Candy Kitchen, Carl's Drive In and The Chase Hotel. They will also rediscover places that are gone with the passage of time such as the Coral Court Motel, the Parkmoor, the Chain of Rocks Amusement Park and the 66 Park-In Theatre. Artifacts include neon signs like the original sign from the La Casa Grande Motel on Watson, and classic cars including a 1963 Corvette Stingray convertible and a 1957 Airstream Travel Trailer.

Route 66 opened on Nov. 11, 1926, as the major highway connecting Chicago and Los Angeles. Route 66 bore the hardships of the Great Depression, taking migrants west to find a new life. It carried military transports through World War II. At its height in the 1950s and '60s, tourists traveled its length to see the sights of the Southwest and California.

culture. It helped create a fascination with drive-in theaters and drive-in restaurants, with motels and cabin courts, with tourist shops and tourist traps.

By the 1970s, the interstate system offered a more efficient way to get around the country and rendered Route 66 obsolete. The Mother Road was officially decommissioned in 1985, with many of the states removing the shields before that. Although Route 66 is long gone, relics of it still remain across St. Louis. Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis serves as a vehicle to transport visitors back to a time when car travel was an adventure and momand-pop diners and motels ruled the road.

From IMAX Entertainment, "A Beautiful Planet", the latest space documentary from director Toni Myers and made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), opened at the Saint Louis Science Center ’s OMNIMAX Theater on May 13. The film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and is narrated by Academy Awardwinner Jennifer Lawrence. People People planner Bourdain to appear at The Fox

Internationally renowned bestselling author, television host and multiple Emmy-awardwinner Anthony Bourdain today announced The Hunger, an 11-city North American tour launching October 25 in New York.

Bourdain’s first cookbook in 10 years, "Appetites" (published by Ecco), also hits shelves October 25.

"Central Intelligencer"

"Central Intelligence," a buddy action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, doesn't pack many big laughs, but it is likely to keep a smile on your face for the duration.

That's largely because of the charisma of its two leads, who wholly embrace the earnest goofiness of Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen's ("The Mindy Project") story about two guys at the opposite ends of the high school hierarchy. There's more to it than that, but at its heart — and yes, this movie has a big, beating heart — this story centers on a high school prince who grows up to be an ordinary guy (Hart's Calvin Joyner) and the overweight outcast who sheds his flab and becomes exceptional (Johnson's Bob Stone) and what they learn from one another. Seriously!

The movie, from "We're The Millers" director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who also has a script credit, opens on a flashback of a 1996 high school pep rally where Calvin offers an act of kindness to his less fortunate classmate when everyone else just sits there and laughs. Cut to 20 years later and "most likely to succeed" Calvin is married to his high school girlfriend (Danielle Nicolet) and working as a midlevel accountant who's just been passed over for a promotion that his former assistant gets instead. It's the eve of their high school reunion and he'd rather not go at all. He's feeling a little too average for the "what are you doing now" small talk.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "crude and suggestive humor, some nudity, action violence, and brief strong language."

RUNNING TIME: 114 minutes.

"Finding Dory"

In Pixar's hands, the ocean — equal parts danger and wonder — is a vast metaphor for the choppy waters of parenting. Cloistered coral reefs of home are surrounded by frightful drop-offs and strong currents that can sweep a little fish out to an immense sea. When the difference between survival and shark bait is flipper-thin, how much line do parents give before reeling in?

"Finding Dory," a sequel to 2003's "Finding Nemo," shifts the tale from Nemo, the clownfish with a weak fin, to Dory, the blue tang with short term memory loss — or as the baby Dory seen early in the film says, "remembery loss."

The adventures of both Dory and Nemo are born out of straying too far from anxious parents. The gulf of separation stretches wider and longer in "Finding Dory," but it's covered the same way: by pluckily overcoming genetic handicaps and trusting in the Pacific-sized love of family. In the Pixar brood, the sweetly sentimental "Finding" movies are the most ready-made for parent-kid bonding; they would surely inspire countless father-son fishing trips if that didn't mean hooking the movies' heroes.

"Finding Dory" promotes the original's daffy supporting character (so perfectly voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) to protagonist. But it's not a simple switch in perspective: In seeing through her forgetful fisheyes, you realize how terrifyingly disorienting it is to be Dory.

"Finding Dory" is "Memento" under the sea, with a much more chipper lead forever at pains to remember why and where she's going.

The film, directed by Andrew Stanton, picks up six months after "Finding Nemo." Dory is living with Nemo (Hayden Rolence, replacing Alexander Gould) and Marlin (Albert Brooks), but she's nagged by flickers of memory of her family.

RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mild thematic elements."

RUNNING TIME: 97 minutes.

"Hunt for the Wilderpeople"

"Flight of the Conchords" went off the air in 2009 but the beat has gone on in the films of Taika Waititi.

Waititi, who was a writer and director of that cult HBO series, has carried on the show's New Zealand deadpan and childlike whimsy with varying success. Often collaborating with "Conchords" star Jermaine Clement, Waititi has previously seesawed too far into quirk (2007's oddball romance "Eagle vs Shark") and risen to heights of comic understatement (2015's vampire mockumentary "What We Do in the Shadows").

In "Hunt for the Wilderpeople," a huge hit in Waititi's native New Zealand, also delights in teetering — clumsily but charmingly — between fantasy and reality. The film is a fable about a heavy-set foster kid, Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), and a reluctant foster parent, "Uncle" Hector (Sam Neill), who, evading child services, go on the lam and spark a manhunt.

As far as buddy comedy pairings go, few can match the unlikeliness of that in "Hunt for the Wilderpeople."

Having run through foster families, Ricky, introduced as "a very bad egg," is dropped off at the remote home of Aunt Bella (an excellent Rima Te Wiata who leaves the film too soon) and Hector. At first glance, Ricky is terribly unsuited for country life. On his first night, he tries to run away but gets no further than halfway up the nearest hillside.

Just as Ricky begins warming to life with Bella (the gruff Hector largely evades him), tragedy comes out of the blue, and Ricky is to be retrieved by child welfare. But Ricky and Hector, each fed up with society, resolve to "go bush." They totter into the mountains, and an increasingly absurd chase ensues, led by a militant child services worker (Rachel House).

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "thematic elements including violent content and for some language."

RUNNING TIME: 101 minutes.

"Swiss Army Man"

Flatulence is a key element of "Swiss Army Man ," but the film isn't exactly a comedy.

The feature debut of writer-directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Quan doesn't really know what it wants to be. There's a running theme of farts and erections, but also one of loneliness and alienation. There are elements of magical realism and of a buddy road adventure. And lots of disturbing things happen to a dead body.

Ultimately a sad tale about a man's deep yearning for connection, "Swiss Army Man" is so tonally erratic that it leaves the viewer more unsettled than actually moved.

Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on an island and about to take his own life when a body (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on shore. It's a young man's corpse, and it is farting. Hank climbs aboard the corpse and rides it across the sea, somehow propelled by the constant flatulence.

It's outrageous and bizarre, and it leaves Hank newly inspired to find his way home.

Hank brings the corpse along as he treks through the woods of a new found land, looking for civilization. The more time he spends with the body, the more he discovers its practicalities in the wilderness. He uses it as a water catcher during a rainstorm, pressing on the corpse's belly to release water from its mouth like a human fountain. It's pretty gross, but mild compared to what's to come.

Hank befriends the body and eventually, it starts talking. He says his name is Manny. He's an innocent, asking questions about life and love.

RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and sexual material."

RUNNING TIME: 95 minutes.

"The BFG"

There's a secret about children that Steven Spielberg, Melissa Mathison and Roald Dahl have always known — that no matter how innocent, kids are as capable of understanding darkness as adults, and sometimes even more so. It's not that it's some completely unacknowledged truth, but it is one that rarely seems to permeate what we consider "children's entertainment" in any real way. It just makes adults too uncomfortable. It's also the reason why the under-10 set flocks to Dahl.

A measured embrace of the deep menace in Dahl's words is why this long-time-coming adaptation of his 1982 book "The BFG " not only succeeds, but shines. It's not just some pleasant romp into the world of giants. It's an honest-to-goodness, gut punch of a journey, crackling with heart, uncertainty, and overflowing with all-out wonder.

There's really no other way to tell a story about an orphan who is captured by a giant and taken to a land crawling with much larger giants who like the taste of human beings, or "beens" as they're called.

The orphan, Sophie, is played by the newcomer Ruby Barnhill. Sporting a Dorothy Hamill haircut and rounded glasses, this little brunette moppet is a delightful revelation who is at turns feisty, lovable and even a little annoying (in a good way). In other words, she's a believable kid — a result that Spielberg has been coaxing out of child actors since "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial."

Thankfully, Sophie has been taken not by man-eaters, but the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance, who was just in Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies"), who prefers to create dreams for the children of England, not snack on them. But Sophie, who lays awake night after night, saw him gliding through the streets of London and she can't be trusted with the knowledge that giants really do exist, no matter how pure her intentions.

RATED: PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "action/peril, some scary moments and brief rude humor."

RUNNING TIME: Running time: 117 minutes.

His dad, Julius (Judd Hirsch), wrote a memoir about the whole saving-the-Earth thing. And the generation of kiddos from the first movie have seemingly devoted themselves to their government, including the president's daughter, Patricia (Maika Monroe), and Dylan Hiller (Jessie T. Usher), son of Vivica A. Fox's Jasmine Hiller and stepson of Will Smith's Steven Hiller, who died years ago and is memorialized as a national hero.

RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of sci-fi action and destruction, and for some language."

"Independence Day" sequel dumb but fun

The only one not doing so hot is President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who basically has alien-induced PTSD and a bushy "I've lost my mind" beard and cane.

Oh, and, surprise! The long-haired Area 51 scientist Dr. Brakish Okun (Brent Spiner) didn't die in '96 (yeah right); he was in a coma and wakes up when the aliens return.

There's a whole mess of new characters, including the U.S. president (Sela Ward, channeling Hillary Clinton); a French scientist (Charlotte Gainsbourg); an African general (Deobia Oparei); and a hunky fighter pilot (Liam Hemsworth) who's engaged to Patricia.

The plot is a big jumble of story lines, nonsense science talk and lots of "in '96"

references. Speaking of '96, there's nothing even remotely as thrilling or memorable as the first here — no mom, son and pup running through an L.A. tunnel, no Will Smith complaining about missing a barbeque while dragging a comatose alien through the desert, and no set pieces likely to influence future action movies.

Twentieth Century Fox didn't screen this film for critics in advance — usually the sign of a clunker of a movie. Instead, this is the mindless spectacle we've been waiting for. This ain't much, but it knows what it is, and it's refreshing to have a "franchise" that isn't bogged down with source material, fan expectations and allegiance to untold numbers of future films.

"The Legend of Tarzan" close to great

By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge The stories of Tarzan, a feral child raised in Africa by a troop of gorillalike primates, have been around for over one hundred years. That’s a lot of time for you to have formed an attachment to a character or an idea.

Whether that attachment is to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ original novel, or Johnny Weissmuller’s dozen films as the hero, or to Carol Burnett’s chestthumping battle yodel, you know an enjoyment for this lies somewhere deep inside your soul. Even children of the nineties may recall the Disney animated version from a couple of decades ago that launched a nice Phil Collins hit. I happen to care for all of these interpretations I’ve listed, and cherish even more the memories of my grandfather coaxing my sister to mug

through the yell at family gatherings when we were small children. I bet I could get her kids to do it for me now.

In the new movie out this weekend, Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgard) has returned to London to be John Clayton, the Lord Greystoke, as was his birthright. Having married Jane Porter (Margot Robbie) and settled into quiet life, he wants now only to forget the dangerous memories of his jungle life and raise a family of his own children. The politics of the world in the 1880s conspire against his wishes and he’s lured back to the Congo on the pretense that King Leopold of Belgium wants to meet with him to discuss a business venture using his fame and the Crown’s wealth to make them all even richer. Accompanying Clayton on the journey is his darling wife, a fully-formed character in her own right, and George Washington

Williams (Samuel L. Jackson), an emissary of the United States who suspects that Leopold is building an army of both mercenaries and native slaves abroad. The three set out for Tarzan’s old home to find that the children of their past are now cordial grown-ups fearing the worst that Williams believed has actually come true.

After Jane is kidnapped by the villainous Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), Leopold’s agent on the continent, Williams and Tarzan kick off a journey through the dangerous lands of indigenous warriors (led by a jaguar-clawed Djimon Hounsou) and the now-hostile Mangani apes that were once Tarzan’s own family.

A chest of diamonds also figures in as a prominent macguffin. It’s at these heights that the movie is at its vine-swinging, knuckle-breaking

best. Sweeping vistas of the jungle basin and herds of animals in stampede is great fun, but there’s hardly enough of it. During the climactic ending, wildebeests destroy an encampment of soldiers before the fight turns to a paddlewheeler beset by crocodiles. I grinned the whole way through this giant tease that ends simply and too abruptly for the quality of the filmmaking.

Warner Bros. has bet big on their summer tent pole with “The Legend of Tarzan” anchoring the Independence Day holiday weekend. Early returns are as mixed as the critical comments.

Waltz continues his impressive run of egomaniacal bad guys (“Inglorious Basterd”, “Django Unchained”, “Spectre”), but one wonders if he’s able of performing as more than just the token role of ‘Christoph

Waltz’. Robbie is also more than just an adequate female lead. She defies the ‘damsel in distress’ stereotype by finding an ingenious way of getting herself out of her own trouble. She’s back next month as a co-lead in “Suicide Squad”. While I liked this telling of the Tarzan tale, it just misses out on being a really top-level work.

As it plays now, it’s in the style of “Jurassic Park” and the recent “Planet of the Apes” movies, but it could have attained a whole ‘nother level if it had done the one thing I always gripe against: add a few more dynamic jungle scenes to the running length. “ T h e L e g e n d o f Ta r z a n ” r u n s 110 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, som e sensual i t y, and bri ef rude dialogue. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

The Arts EAC to host unique exhibit

S

everal years ago Edwardsville Arts Center Board members Joan Wentz and the late Dennis DeToye were brainstorming ideas for future EAC art exhibits.

They talked about developing exhibits around different groups of people who were also artists.

That was the kernel of the idea behind the EAC's latest exhibit entitled, Attorney Art. The exhibit, which runs through July 29 at the EAC, features the work of eight local attorneys and judges who all have a second passion and talent - art.

Once the idea was born for an exhibit featuring members of our local legal system, EAC board member Sandra Tatoian, who is also an attorney with Mathis, Marifian, & Richter, LTD in Edwardsville, took the lead and reached out to local attorneys and judges she knew who also were talented artistically.

“Despite the public's perception, attorneys and judges are a very humble crowd,” Tatoian said about having to persuade her legal friends to participate in the exhibit.

The Attorney Art exhibit will feature the work of eight judges and attorneys that include Judge Thomas Chapman in Ceramics, Greg Coffey in Photography, Michael Huft in Photography, Kim Kern in Fibers, Lance Mallon in Painting, Judge Andreas Matoesian in Wood,

Mark Schuver in Photography, and Sandy Dods in Watercolor.

“I think we've got some terrific artists. We've got photography,

ceramics and woodwork,” Tatoian said about the variety.

to hand out his woodwork to people who come into his chambers. He did all kinds of woodwork. For years and years it has been a hobby of his, and he just does beautiful work.”

Matoesian has several items in the exhibit including wooden pens, a wooden gavel and handcrafted wooden basket. “It looks like a woven basket, but he carved it out of wood,” Tatoian added.

“Judge Matoesian made it for Judge Crowder, and she donated it for the show.”

There's also a few photographers in the exhibit including Mark Schuver, an attorney in Belleville. Tatoian noted that Schuver's photos feature everything from architecture to people to wildlife and landscape. “His composition is terrific,” she said.

Another photographer in the exhibit is retired attorney Michael Huft who also happens to be the father of EAC Gallery Manager Carolyn Tidball. “He actually used to be a botanist before he became a lawyer. So that's his first love,” Tidball explained about her father. “Now that he's retired, he and my mom go on these nature hikes every single weekend - my mom is also a botanist - so they will go out and look for plants and identify them.

My dad takes pictures of them while my mom gets the shading just perfect with the amount of sun and light.”

“So he has a whole bunch of pictures of plants with their common names and their Latin names,” Tidball added. “Then there's other pictures of lakes and landscapes from where they go on their hikes. I think there's some

shots from Joshua Tree, California, and Indiana and Michigan.”

Tidball also spoke about Dod's watercolor paintings in the exhibit. “Sandy paints with really bright colors,” Tidball pointed out. “Her paintings tend to have a really thick application of paint so they aren't what you typically think of as watercolor. She uses stippling – like a whole bunch of dots. She also uses a technique with plastic wrap.

She puts paint on the plastic wrap or on the paper and then textures it with the crumpled up plastic so her paintings all have an interesting texture on the background.”

Also included in the exhibit is the work of the late Lance Mallon. “He has a collection of oil paintings, there's some watercolor, and the rest is digitally manipulated photography. From a distant you may think they are a painting, but they are photographs,” Tidball said.

Two of the Mallon pieces will be available to purchase.

The Attorney Art exhibit will be featured until July 29 at the EAC which is located at 6165 Center Grove Road in Edwardsville.

Concurrently, in the EAC's Student Gallery will be an exhibit of the work of Regan Melton, a recent BFA graduate of SIUE in the Drawing Department. She will be displaying two bodies of work: a series of close-up portraits, and a group of drawings depicting the detailed engineering and architecture of the SIUE art building.

The Arts Artistic adventures Saint Louis Art Museum showcases folk art

The Saint Louis Art Museum will present Self-Taught Genius: Treasures from the American Folk Art Museum, an exhibition charting the development of folk art in America while pondering the motivations for artists who were at times considered to work outside of canonical art history. The ticketed exhibition will be on view now through Sept. 11.

The exhibition explores the continuum of American folk art and the concept of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;self-taught geniusâ&#x20AC;? through more than 100 works of art from the Revolutionary War to contemporary times.

Organized by the American Folk Art Museum, the exhibition and its national

t o u r a re m a d e p o s s i b l e b y g e n e ro u s funding from the Henry Luce Foundation, as part of its 75th anniversary initiative. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Because folk art has not been a major collecting area for the Saint Louis Art Museum, we sought an exhibition that p re s e n t s o u r v i s i t o r s w i t h w o r k s o f exceptional quality that tell the story of a uniquely American artistic tradition,â&#x20AC;? said Brent R. Benjamin, Barbara B. Taylor Director of the Saint Louis Art Museum.

Paintings, works on paper, textiles, decorative arts and sculpture are presented within context of seven perspectives from which artists are compelled to createâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;achievers, encoders, m e s s e n g e r s , i m p ro v e m e n t , re f o r m e r s , ingenuity, and guides.

Achievers: Working outside the realm of fine arts, achievers often created works of art that were a testament to their own passionate vision or grandiose thought.

For example, Marino Auruti intended his 11-foot Encyclopedic Palace to serve as a model for a 136-floor museum that would celebrate every achievement of

Ingenuity: By elaborating on a practice through mechanical or visual inventiveness, some self-taught artists reveal an exceptional ingenuity in their work. An unknown artist combined creativity and resourcefulness to make Knife Grinder, a 19th-century whirligig figure that captures this spirit of ingenuity.

Guides: Self-taught artists who mark a rite of passage or a profound event by creating of a work of art might be considered guides. For example, Carl Klewicke spent approximately 20 years working on his Original Design Quilt a wedding gift for his daughter.

Admission is free for Members. For the general public, tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $6 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for children age 5 and under. Improvement: Represented in the exhibition by self-taught artists depicting their own refinements or achievements, or those attained by their subject, improvement is exemplified in Girl in Red Dress with Cat and Dog, a portrait

by Ammi Phillips that emphasizes the genteelness of the young, 19th-century sitter.

Religion Religion briefs Federal judge sets July 18 hearing in church shooting case

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A hearing has been set for next month to sort out jury selection details for the federal trial of a white man accused of gunning down nine black parishioners at a historic South Carolina church.

U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel on Thursday set a July 18 hearing in the federal case against 22-year-old Dylann Roof.

Attorneys disagree about some juror selection details, such as whether they should come from across South Carolina or only from the Charleston area. Roof faces charges including hate crimes in the shooting deaths at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church.

Both state and federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, and Roof's federal trial is set for November. The state case is not scheduled until January, although state prosecutors have said their case should be tried first.

Amish growth extended to South American settlements last year

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Amish are branching out, setting up settlements in Bolivia, Argentina and Canada as their numbers continue to grow.

A new study by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Pennsylvania's Elizabethtown College reports the Christian religious sect's

total current population is about 308,000 and has grown about 18 percent over the past five years.

The two small South American settlements were both founded last fall after longstanding Mennonite communities in those countries reached out to North American Amish to explore affiliation.

Nearly two-thirds of all Amish live in three states — Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana. There are currently settlements in 31 states and three Canadian provinces.

For The Edge Fight those summer boredom blues with a fun-filled trip to the 11th Annual Veggie Fest in Lisle, IL on July 23-24! The giant outdoor festival, one of the largest vegetarian food and lifestyle festivals in North America, attracted over 30,000 people last year, and we can't wait for you and your family to be part of the fun this year!

While there are plenty of exciting things for adults to enjoy, such as cooking demos by chefs, authors, and restaurant owners, as well as talks on spirituality, health, and green living, there's also an entire tent reserved for children's activities run by educators.

Your kids will love the arts and crafts, live music, and face painting, and will have a blast dressing up as their favorite animal, fruit, or vegetable to participate in the VegiKids Parade each day of Veggie Fest at 5:30pm. Costumes can be brought from home or made in the children's tent.

After your kids have had their fun, you can pick up some free samples and information from the 100+ vendor booths focusing on spirituality, healthful living, vegetarian, vegan, and raw foods, and so much more.

Just a few of the many vendors who will be at Veggie Fest this year include Nature's Path Organics, Manna Organics, VegNews, Vitamix, Follow Your Heart, Gardein, and Quorn (who will be sharing their four new vegan products). There will even be a booth where you can get a temporary henna tattoo!

Music Tuning in Bernadette Peters to perform at The Rep’s 50th Anniversary Gala

Multiple Tony Award-winning Broadway icon Bernadette Peters will perform at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’s 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, September 24, at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel.

The World Wide Technology Foundation and the Steward Family Foundation will underwrite the performance.

One of Broadway’s brightest stars, Peters received both t h e To n y Aw a r d a n d D r a m a Des k Awa rd f or h e r c r i t i c a l l y acclaimed performance in A n d r e w L l o y d We b b e r ’ s h i t musical Song and Dance. In June 1999, Peters earned her second Tony Award, her third D r a m a D e s k Aw a r d , a n d a n Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in one of Broadway’s most popular m u s i c a l s , t h e To n y Aw a r d w i n n i n g B ro a d w a y re v i v a l o f Annie Get Your Gun. Peters currently stars in Amazon Prime’s hit TV series, Mozart in the Jungle, which won the 2016 Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy or Musical series.

General tickets for the gala start at $500, which includes a black-tie dinner and a performance by Peters. Patronlevel t i c k et s — w h i ch fe a t u re preferred seating for the performance — are $1,500 per couple. A sponsor-level table for 10 is $10,000.

The gala commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, which launched its first performances in 1966. The Rep’s 50th season begins in September with the Stephen Sondheim m u s i c a l F o l l i e s , w h o s e 2 0 11 revival featured an acclaimed performance by Peters.

Summerland Tour coming to Ballpark Village

The 5th annual Summerland Tour is proud to announce that Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit and Sponge will perform at each date of this year's acclaimed '90s alternative music tour.
