""The Huntsman: Winter's War"

"The Family Fang"

"The Huntsman: Winter's War" is one of the more bizarre sequels in recent memory. If modern movies are going to strip every side story out of every superhero universe and beyond, fairy tales should be fair game, too. But it's more than a little odd that the filmmakers here decided to follow up their feminist reimagining of the Snow White story with one focused on Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and the jilted, hysterical woman (Emily Blunt's Freya), who is trying to keep him apart from his true love (Jessica Chastain's Sara). If this is progress, count me out. Part prequel, part sequel to "Snow White and the Huntsman," this one plays musical chairs with focus and tone. One moment, it's a bawdy, slapstick comedy. The next, it's a deathly serious fantasy epic. Tonal shifts are fine, but this star-studded nonsense feels like it was put together by a committee of robots who were given copies of "Frozen," ''Game of Thrones," ''The Chronicles of Narnia," and five minutes of "Snow White and the Huntsman" as source material. There are about a dozen competing story lines, the only point of which seems to be a futile effort to continually reinvent and justify its reason for being. This film starts before the events of the first. The evil Ravenna (a luminous Charlize Theron) is alive, glowing, glaring and still talking about taking down men and kingdoms. She wants her good-natured sister Freya to fall in line, too, but that only happens when Freya's heart is broken and her icy powers are unleashed. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "fantasy action violence and some sensuality." RUNNING TIME: 113 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One and a half stars out of four.

Family dysfunction takes on new meaning in "The Family Fang," a film about a pair of performance artists for whom everything in life is part of the act, and the effects this existence has on their two children. The elegantly structured adaptation of Kevin Wilson's best-selling novel opens in a scene from the past. In the family car, parents Caleb (Jason Butler Harner) and Camille (Kathryn Hahn) are preparing their adolescent children Annie (Mackenzie Brooke Smith) and Baxter (Jack McCarthy) for something. Caleb is dressed as a police officer and Baxter, at probably five, is asking if he can taste the fake blood again. Suddenly we're in a bank, where Baxter is staging a hold up for the teller's lollipop jar with a gun. There's a shooting, there are tears, and then there's laughter as the family breaks the ruse. Surrounding pedestrians look on in horror at the bizarre, terrifying scene. The Fangs are just in their own world enjoying themselves and relishing in the chaos that they've created. As is to be expected, the future is not as carefree. Now grown, Annie (Nicole Kidman) is a famous actress with a wild reputation who has gotten less interesting with sobriety. The once indie darling is now best known for a string of lousy rom coms and is trying to stage a comeback. Baxter (Jason Bateman, who also directed), is a novelist who had one great breakout, a middling follow-up and is now two years late on his next. An accident and a hospital stint brings the siblings back together again, and back with their parents (Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett), who they escaped long ago. The accidental reunion is at turns fraught and comforting, but things turn sour and volatile when the adult kids refuse to participate in another stunt with their too-eager parents. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "some language." RUNNING TIME: 107 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

The questionable casting of Zoe Saldana is only one of the many problems with Cynthia Mort's limp and misjudged Nina Simone biopic "Nina." Little of the High Priestess of Soul's searing clarity of voice or profound struggle comes through in this insipid film whose fakeness is writ across Saldana's dubiously darkened skin. "Please take Nina's name out of your mouth. For the rest of your life" was the harsh judgment laid on Saldana by Simone's estate. Bitter battles over to whom an artist belongs are seldom good for anyone. But it's reasonable to question whether Simone's story should be in the hands of those who would employ black face to capture a proudly dark-skinned woman. It should be said: It's no easy task to gather the multitudes within Simone into a feature film. She was, like her music, unclassifiable. The classically trained pianist was termed a jazz singer and a soul diva, but she's been most identified as a folk singer. As if another form of resistance in a life full of it, her career refused to bend to the typical arc found in music biopics. She had only one top 20 single (her first, 1959's "I Loves You, Porgy") and spent much of her later life in selfimposed exile in Barbados, Liberia and France. Why Mort, who wrote and directed the film, has chosen to focus on Simone's troubled 1990s period in France is anyone's guess. It allows for a fiery kind of redemption story, going from heavy drinking and medical meltdown to a triumphant Central Park performance. But the film is a sloppily stitching of lethargic scenes between Simone and her assistant, Clifton (a sleepy David Oyelowo), in a French Riviera villa. Arguments over taking pills are possibly the least dramatic or important moments in a life that pulsed with and provided the impassioned tempo to the civil rights movement. RATED: Not rated It contains adult language and some violence. RUNNING TIME: 90 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

What would it take to make you fall off the upstairs balcony at your house in the middle of the day? Could you imagine being so intoxicated by your own karaoke performance of "The Humpty Dance" that it sends you a-tumbling? This is one of a series of ridiculously farfetched events that make up "Mother's Day," the third and worst installment in veteran director Garry Marshall's trio of starry ensemble holiday rom-coms. Even if stars Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson are mom's all-time favorites, don't subject her to this cloying, plotless dose of saccharine unless she's done you wrong. The bloopers that play amid the closing credits – one in which Aniston un-hilariously calls Roberts by her real name instead of her character's – are some of the funniest moments in the film. Like "Valentine's Day" and "New Year's Eve" before it, "Mother's Day" introduces various characters whose stories intertwine as they prepare for the title holiday. And, like its predecessors, this latest Marshall romp boasts an extensive allstar cast, including Hector Elizondo, Margo Martindale, Jason Sudeikis, Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Garner. We meet everyone a week before Mother's Day, as family drama reigns. Sandy (Aniston) is dealing with the fact that her two sons might spend Mother's Day with her ex-husband, Henry (Olyphant), whose much younger new wife wants to bond with them. Sandy's friend Jesse (Hudson) is happy with her husband and their toddler – it's her own racist mother (Martindale) who's the problem. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "language and some suggestive material." RUNNING TIME: 118 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: One star out of four.

"Captain America: Civil War"

Conventional movie wisdom would suggest that there can only be diminishing returns with long-running franchises. There must be a breaking point, right? Especially at movie four, five, six and beyond. There are exceptions, sure, but even the painstakingly plotted Marvel films have had low points. And yet in the ashes of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the brain trust behind Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo have built what is easily one of the strongest films of their so-called cinematic universe with "Captain America: Civil War," an engaging, lively and just flat out fun use of the characters we've gotten to know across the last eight years and 12 films. As our interest waned in the prospect of yet another supervillain threatening to destroy an entire city or planet, Marvel smartly pivoted and turned the conflict inward. With the near inevitability of a civilian death toll any time the Avengers are involved in an incident, the UN steps in with an accord proposing regulation and oversight. Essentially now, the Avengers need permission before they jump into action. Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is for it. Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) is against it. And the rest of the Avengers must decide where they side, leading to some interesting alliances — like Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) going against her pal Cap, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) positioning against his friend Black Widow, and so on. RATED: PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "extended sequences of violence, action and mayhem." RUNNING TIME: 147 minutes. ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: Three stars out of four.

"A Bigger Splash"

A craggy, stormy volcanic island off Sicily. Some fabulous real estate. A little food porn. Tilda Swinton's face, and Ralph Fiennes' — well, a lot more than his face. What more could a film buff want? To be fair, "A Bigger Splash," by director Luca Guadagnino, has an uneven feel. For 90 minutes it floats along as a relaxed exploration of four quirky characters — attractive, lustful, bored, somewhat confused — and the shifting ties that bind them, carnally and otherwise. Then, suddenly and shockingly, it turns into a psychological thriller for the last half hour. It's a shift in tone that feels uneasy and a little forced. But by then, you've been lulled into a second-glass-of-wine feeling — perhaps a result of watching those lazy, al fresco meals overlooking the sea. Your defenses are down, and you're ready to flow with it until the end, even though you have a feeling you're going to be left a little unsatisfied. The setting is the Sicilian island of Pantelleria near Tunisia, where Marianne (Swinton) and her boyfriend of six years, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts) are staying in a sprawling home atop rocky cliffs, with a nice swimming pool (the film is a reworking of the French New Wave classic "La Piscine," which should give aforementioned film buffs a sense of where things are headed). Marianne is a rock star not unlike David Bowie — a role that fits the pale, androgynous, chameleon-like Swinton to a T — who is recovering from vocal cord surgery and not allowed to speak. This means that for most of the film, Swinton lacks one of an actor's chief instruments: the voice. This challenge also suits Swinton to a T; in fact, it was her own idea to render Marianne virtually speechless, jettisoning dialogue originally planned for her. RATED: R by the Motion Picture Association of America "for graphic nudity, some strong sexual content, language and brief drug use." RUNNING TIME: 124 minutes. T ASSOCIATED PRESS RANKING: hree stars out of four.

This challenge also suits Swinton to a T; in fact, it was her own idea to render Marianne virtually speechless, jettisoning dialogue originally planned for her. Boyfriend Paul is a rather brooding, hunky, protective type with his own troubled past, and the two are enjoying a fairly idyllic period of mutual recovery — nice meals, afternoons in the nude by the pool — when the phone rings. It's Harry (Fiennes), a gregarious record producer and Marianne's former flame, arriving unexpectedly on the island. As if his uninvited visit isn't enough, Harry's brought along a surprise: a 20-ish daughter, Penelope

(Dakota Johnson), whom he's only recently met. And now, dear reader, we digress for a moment to consider the simple delight of Ralph Fiennes' broadening, deepening performances in recent years. If you're like me, you might once have thought the best Fiennes moment came in that tragic, sexy scene where he brings Kristin Scott Thomas out of the cave in "The English Patient." But that was 20 years ago, and since then Fiennes has been everything from deliciously villainous — yeah, the one with no name — to, recently, exquisitely funny in "The Grand Budapest Hotel." And now he is uninhibited, both physically and emotionally, and quite riveting as Harry, a man burning with unresolved appetite.

"Keanu" gets it right – and wrong By ROBERT GRUBAUGH For The Edge There's a certain amount of advance planning that has failed me at the moment. In my haste to bring a review of "Captain America: Civil War" to you last week, I neglected to remember there were no other wide releases coming out alongside it, leaving me nothing to write about today that was new. So what would I watch? Should I go back nine weeks and finally see the stillpopular Disney hit "Zootopia"? Or their three-week-old "Jungle Book"? Not in the mood. I might even go way out on a limb and review the wildly enjoyable, but vague and dissatisfying finale episode of CBS's "The Good Wife". TV recaps stray too far from

my mission statement, but I would praise creators Michelle and Robert King for the body of their series on the whole, despite my misgivings over the way they chose to wrap up certain storylines (poor Christine Baranski). Instead, I just ducked into a matinee of "Keanu", last week's R-rated gangster kitten film from comedy duo Key & Peele. It was not quite as funny as the poster led me to believe. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele are best known for their eponymous Comedy Central television series "Key & Peele" that aired several season until ending last year. The two have worked together in sketch comedy for a long time, including on "MadTV". When they're not making headlines for

being truly charismatic experts on race comedy, they're showing up in weird venues like the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Their first foray into the feature business is an offbeat, one-note joke film called "Keanu" in which a depressed Rell (Peele) adopts (quite truthfully) the world's cutest kitten after breaking up with his girlfriend. Dark clouds part, sun shines through, and life suddenly has meaning again for the round-faced dork. His cousin/bestie, Clarence (Key), is thrilled. He knew that the funk of ending a romantic relationship would ruin his buddy. But Keanu isn't just any stray. He's the prize pet of a dead drug dealer whose surviving family wants him back in bad ways. The success of "Keanu" lies in the small jokes as it shifts from

adorable kitten comedy to straightup gangster film when the little furball is catnapped by a bad dude named Cheddar (Method Man). Rell's over-the-top love affair with his new sidekick was a riot. He went full "crazy cat guy" and started a photo shoot of the cat in famous movie settings for his own calendar. Named, of course, for the star of "The Matrix", Keanu is an impressive talent when dressed like "The Shining's" Jack Torrance or "Reservoir Dogs'" Mr. Orange. The rest of the picture is a cliché mistaken identity farce as Rell and Clarence shed their nice guy images to infiltrate Cheddar's gang and rescue Keanu from his clutches. In doing so, they meet a variety of thinly-written characters that fill roles like undercover cop (Tiffany Haddish), whacky weed

May 19, 2016

dealer (Will Forte), and cartel kingpin (Luis Guzman). Nia Long plays Clarence's wife in an unnecessary subplot and actress Anna Faris riffs on a version of herself in the film's worst/most g o n z o m o m e n t . F o r t u n a t e l y, our headlining duo find ways to introduce their signature bits (referring to actor Liam Neeson in the plural) and make vintage George Michael relevant to a trio of gang thugs. I find it uncomfortable to say, but "Keanu" is both what's right and what's terribly, terribly wrong with today's comedy films. "Keanu" runs 100 minutes and is rated R for violence, language throughout, drug use, and sexuality/ nudity. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

She was married in the church in 1885.

Jamaica police trying to solve killings of U.S. missionaries

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaican police say they're seeking suspects and trying to determine a motive in the weekend slayings of two American missionaries in the area where they lived and worked. The bodies of Randy Hentzel, 48, and Harold Nichols, 53, were found in bushes along a rural road where they were traveling on motorbikes. One of the men was found with his hands bound. ne of the region’s must-see festivals returns! Dance St. Louis, the Touhill Performing Arts Center and Emerson present the 9th Annual Emerson Spring to Dance Festival 2016 on May 27-29, 2016 at the Touhill Performing Arts Center. From Los Angeles to Memphis to New York, 26 professional dance companies perform over the course of three nights. Tickets are $10-$20 per night. Going strong for nearly 10 years, the nationally recognized Spring to Dance Festival has become a St. Louis Memorial Day Weekend tradition. Professional dance companies from across the country converge at the Touhill to perform for three consecutive nights. Covered by the New York Times and Dance Magazine, the festival has gained national and regional attention for thrilling audiences with a smorgasbord of dance styles from the most talked about dance companies and troupes for a ticket price under $20. Dance Magazine states, "In a difficult economic climate, Dance St. Louis has just the ticket.” Time Out Chicago says, “Audiences flock to the performances—the price is right and the offerings are generous.” The St. Louis PostDispatch says, “Of all the local Memorial Day weekend events, perhaps the most consistently exciting is the three-night Spring to Dance Festival presented by Dance St. Louis.” Participating companies of the 9th Annual Emerson Spring to Dance Festival 2016 are: Friday, May 27 PUSH Dance Company (San Francisco, CA) Barkin/Selissen Project (New York, NY) Laura Careless/Alchemy for Nomads (Brooklyn, NY) Afriky Lolo (St. Louis, MO) Owen/Cox Dance Group (Kansas City, MO) Houston METdance Company (Houston, TX) Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (New York, NY) Saint Louis Ballet (St. Louis, MO) Jennifer Muller/The Works (New York, NY) Giordono Dance Chicago (Chicago, IL) Saturday, May 28 Common Thread Contemporary Dance Company (St. Louis, MO) Project 44 (Astoria, NY) Helen Simoneau Danse (Winston-Salem, NC) BODYART (Los Angeles, CA) MADCO (St. Louis, MO) Thodos Dance Chicago (Chicago, IL) Joel Hall Dancers (Chicago, IL) Chicago Tap Theatre (Chicago, IL) The Dancing Wheels Company (Cleveland, OH) Grand Rapids Ballet (Grand Rapids, MI) Sunday, May 29 Three Soloists (St. Louis, MO): Taiya Deria, Tyra Kopf and Cheyenne Phillips Three Young Choreographers: Lindsay Hawkins setting a work on Common Thread Contemporary Dance Company (St. Louis, MO), Audrey Simes setting a work on The

"It is packed with the most requested and beloved titles by the Muny audience. Mike and our creative teams continued to put world class work on our stage last season, and our audiences showed tremendous support for our productions. With these seven titles, 2016 promises another fantastic season at The Muny. " "For my fifth season, these may be the seven biggest, most demanding productions yet," said Muny artistic director and executive producer Mike Isaacson. World Wide Technology (WWT) and The Steward Family Foundation have once again made a leadership gift to continue as the Muny’s 2016 Season Presenting Sponsor. They became the first overall season sponsor in the history of The Muny in 2014 and continue that role through 2016. “Both WWT and The Steward Family Foundation are committed to The Muny and to making exceptional musical theatre accessible to everyone, said David Steward,

chairman and founder of WWT. “This year’s season promises to be spectacular and will showcase how much the performing arts enrich our community. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, visit muny.org or call (314) 361-1900.

For The Edge

Above and below are views inside the Route 66 Car Museum in Springfield, Mo., which opens June 15.

For The Edge Guy Mace knows his cars - all 67 of them - and soon the public can get to know them, too. On the eve of the 90th anniversary of the “birth” of Route 66, Mace announced he plans to open the Route 66 Car Museum June 15 on “The Mother Road” at at 1624 W. College St. in Springfield, Missouri. Patrons can see two Rolls Royces, the 1926 Hudson used in the 1939 movie “The Grapes of Wrath,” a 1955 BMW that is all original except for the fabric on the seats and a 1967

18

Healey that is one of only 125 ever made that were painted golden beige. His collection also features eight Jaguars built between 1954 and 1974, the Zombie Protection Tru c k f ro m t h e m o v i e s e r i e s “Resident Evil,” a one-cylinder 1907 REO, a Gotham Cruiser and many other unique vehicles in excellent condition. Mace, who began collecting cars in 1990 as investments, shows them off by driving each of them. He decided that wasn’t enough and it was time to share them with others more often by opening the museum.

On the Edge of the Weekend

Strolling through the aisles, he tells stories about each automobile, explaining their history, how and why he acquired them, and details about their engines, paint colors and more. “I enjoy cars,” Mace said. “I enjoy showing the cars. I think it’ll be a great boon to Route 66.” Springfield is a perfect location for such a museum because it became known as “The Birthplace of Route 66” after the name of the iconic highway was announced in the city on April 30, 1926. Springfield also is home to the

the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival & Car Show, National Street Rod Association Mid-America Street Rod Nationals, the new C-Street Car Show for the Kilties, the June Bug Jamboree, Spyderfest and other car shows and automobile events. Tracy Kimberlin, president/ CEO of the Convention & Visitors Bureau, said he’s thrilled a classic car museum is opening on Route 66 in Springfield. “The Route 66 Car Museum is a great addition to the mix of attractions here in Springfield,” Kimberlin said. “Guy Mace has an

amazing car collection and I’m glad the public will get to see it.” Admission for the museum will be $15 with discounts for veterans and children. More details will be announced as they become available. Travel Exhibit showcases latest innovations in technology For The Edge The United States’ Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the focus of a new and first-of-its-kind exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI). DARPA: Redefining Possible highlights some of the remarkable innovations that have kept the United States at the forefront of technology. From robotics to GPS devices, the Internet to voice recognition software, this exhibit showcases the agency’s history, rare artifacts and hands-on activities. The exhibit opens May 5, 2016 and runs through September 5, 2016, and is included in Museum Entry. “This is the first time that DARPA is displaying their work to the public, and many people may not realize that they use DARPA-created innovations every single day,” Director of Collections Kathleen McCarthy said. “MSI consistently displays and demonstrates the greatest advancements in technology, and we’re excited to host this exhibit that puts DARPA’s world-altering work on display.” DARPA was founded in 1958 in response to the Soviet Union’s launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The agency was created to position America as a leader in discovering new areas of science and engineering relevant to national security. In this self-guided exhibit, guests can learn more about the history of the agency alongside one-of-a-kind tech artifacts on display. Museum guests will explore real artifacts

as part of DARPA’s past and continuing work including: • Atlas, the 6-foot-2, 350-pound, highmobility humanoid robot designed to navigate rough outdoor terrain and provide assistance after natural disasters. • Spot, an agile autonomous quadruped that is the world’s most technically advanced robotic dog. • The DEKA Arm System, a sophisticated prosthetic arm that matches the size and weight of an average female arm, contains its own power supply and can be worn comfortably by its user. • A large-scale model of the Sea Hunter, DARPA's recently christened 132-foot submarine-tracking ship, designed to cruise for thousands of kilometers and months on end without a single crew member aboard, alongside video of the vessel's first open-water speed trials. • An intricate look at today's microelectronic chips, which help advance robotics and artificial intelligence research. • An “air legs” exoskeleton device that provides the lower limbs of soldiers or others with rhythmic bursts of power to increase endurance and decrease injuries during long hikes with heavy loads. • A look at the small, sophisticated electrode arrays used to help people with traumatic brain injury and assist in neurological control of prosthetic arms. Hands-on activities allow guests to create their own robot in an interactive game. Create a virtual robot by mixing and matching parts to power and strengthen the ‘bot, while

learning how various sensors and limbs allow robots to complete a certain task. Learn more about innovations you might use daily, like the GPS in your car or the iPad you use at home, initially created by the agency. Activate areas on a smartphone that highlight technology first created by DARPA. Throughout the exhibit, guests will also: • Uncover how the modern-day cell phone operates, from lithium battery to processing design, voice recognition and highperformance display screens. • Discover how military technology influenced today’s video games, infrared night vision and more. • Evaluate science fiction versus real technologies and explore how today’s innovations differ from what is seen in popular culture. • Learn about the engineers, scientists, mathematicians and others who work at DARPA and how the next generation of those careers will shape the future. • For more information on DARPA, visit www.darpa.mil. Stapleton to appear at The Fox

Chris Stapleton boldly introduced himself to the public at-large in 2015 with the release of his breakthrough debut album, Traveller. Released in May on Mercury Records Nashville, Traveller initially debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart with more than 27,000 albums sold, making it one of the bestselling first weeks by a debut country artist in 2015. The album also received extensive critical acclaim and has landed him bookings on multiple national TV shows including recent appearances on Saturday Night Live and CBS News Sunday Morning. Stapleton will appear at the Fox Thursday, June 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $79.50, $59.50, $54.50, $49.50 and are available online at metrotix.com, by calling 314-534-1111, or in person at the Fabulous Fox Box Office. Following a historic turn on the CMA Awards—where Stapleton became the first artist to win Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the same awards— Traveller became the first album to re-enter the Billboard 200 all-genre album chart at No. 1, where it stayed for two straight weeks. The breakthrough success continued earlier this year at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, where Stapleton took home two awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Solo Performance (“Traveller). Most recently, Stapleton won six awards at the 51st Annual ACM Awards—Album of the Year (for Traveller as both artist and producer), Song of the Year (for “Nobody To Blame as both artist and songwriter), Male Vocalist of the Year and New Male Vocalist of the Year. With the six wins, Stapleton ties the record for most ACM Awards won in a single year (only Garth Brooks and Faith Hill have previously won six in the same year). Co-produced with Dave Cobb, Traveller is comprised of songs written throughout Stapleton's 15- year career and evokes his childhood when country, blues, rock and R&B swirled together to create a distinctive sound that still resonates with modern fans.

Bernadette Peters to perform at The Rep’s 50th Anniversary Gala

M u l t i p l e To n y Aw a r d - w i n n i n g B r o a d w a y i c o n B e r n a d e t t e Peters will perform at The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis’s 50th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, September 24, at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel. The World Wide Technology Foundation and the Steward Family Foundation will underwrite the performance. One of Broadway’s brightest stars, Peters received both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for her critically acclaimed performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber ’s hit musical Song and Dance. In June 1999, Peters earned her second Tony Award, her third Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in one of Broadway’s most popular musicals, the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Annie Get Your Gun. Peters currently stars in Amazon Prime’s hit TV series, Mozart in the Jungle, which won the 2016 Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy or Musical series. General tickets for the gala start at $500, which includes a blacktie dinner and a performance by Peters. Patron-level tickets — which feature preferred seating for the performance — are $1,500 per couple. A sponsor-level table for 10 is $10,000. Tickets will be available June 1. The gala commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, which launched its first performances in 1966. The Rep’s 50th season begins in September with the Stephen Sondheim musical Follies, whose 2011 revival featured an acclaimed performance by Peters. “Bernadette Peters is a legendary star befitting a golden anniversary event, Rep Artistic Director Steven Woolf said. “We are honored to have her perform at our gala and cannot wait to watch as she shares her talent with our generous supporters. The Rep’s 50th Anniversary Gala co-chairs are Cathy and Jim Berges, Cheri and Ron Fromm, Ann and Hugh Scott and Lynn and Doug Yaeger.

Dining Delights The Edge's own Bill Roseberry, famous for his You Gotta' Eat restaurant reviews, has put together his thoughts on a number of local eateries. Enjoy. Strange Donuts 2709 Sutton Blvd. Maplewood An aptly named donut shop, it is one of the weirdest places you may ever eat, but weird doesn't mean it's not good. Check out the strangers, which are daily collaborations with other local restaurants. The bacon maple donut and the gooey butter donut are always on the menu and always fantastic choices. Pirronne’s Pizzeria 1775 Washington St. Florissant The pizza here is amazing. They use provel cheese and have a slew of ingredients to go on top of their thin crust pies. During the day they have a great buffet lunch special, which also has a salad bar and soups and appetizers. Frank’s Restaurant 132 West Macarthur Dr. Cottage Hills It is an extensive menu with all kinds of choices, including breakfast selections, sandwiches, steaks, fish, pasta dishes and it’s cheap. Did I mention that it’s cheap?

It’s a great neighborhood bar and restaurant. Sit at the bar and have a few drinks with a friendly staff and patrons. As for the food, get your hands on the best breaded pork tenderloin sandwich ever and check out the monster onion rings, too. Oriental Spoon 229 Sanatorium Edwardsville A Korean restaurant where you can’t go wrong. The Kimchi is very good as an appetizer and make sure to check out their bulgogi and bap selections. Make sure to ask your server about spiciness levels if you can’t handle hotness very well.

Schiappa’s Italian Restaurant 402 S. Madison St. Lebanon A quiet pizzeria that offers plenty more than just pizza. Make sure to check out the great calzones on the menu. Wasabi Sushi Bar 100 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville If you’re into sushi then this is a good place to check out. Choose from a big selection of rolls, from the California and spicy tuna rolls to great choices like the Batman and the Caterpillar. From unagi (eel), to sea urchin, salmon, shrimp and tuna, it has it all. Order the

Lotawata Creek Southern Grill 311 Salem Pl. Fairview Heights Fatten yourself up at this joint. The menu is ridiculously huge and the portions are even bigger. Get your own plate of fries for a side, or a bucket of onion rings. It offers a creative sandwich portion of the menu and great southern-style dishes, try the Mac Daddy Burger. You won’t go away hungry here, trust me. 1818 Chophouse 210 S. Buchanan St. Edwardsville This is a great place to grab a steak diinner, that is their signature dish. A good place for a fancy dinner date, the ambience in the dining area is fantastic. It offers extensive breakfast, brunch and dinner menus, but be prepared to pay, it’s pretty expensive. Sybergs Old Dorsett Rd. Maryland Heights A St. Louis chain restaurant where you can’t go wrong. Check out their awesome selection of pizzas and hot wings and their house-made sauces are fantastic. Be adventurous and try the shark bites, they are delicious. Johnson’s Corner Restaurant 2000 State St. Alton
